PROCES
Architecture derived from literature extolled a dwelling designed
As the dwelling cares for the family, it also attempts to intercede with the surrounding neighborhood by incorporating a community garden for all to use. Furthering its connection to the site, the ribbon of the front façade flows from the river to the treetops, the dwelling’s form, views, and fenestration consequential of the narrow site and the form and behavior of the trees that inhabit it.

LANDSCAPES OF REPOSE SALT LAKE CEMETARY CHAPEL + CREMATORIUM
spring 2008 / architectural design studio II / mira locher, aia 8 weeks
ARCH 3011
A chapel and crematorium for the Avenues Neighborhood in Salt Lake City brought with it the need to examine the essential human need for mourning and consolation. Inspired by the natural plant life of the site—their apparent calm and tranquility—I chose to question whether architecture could
prioritize nature above building. Therefore, the building became an environment of ordered nature, where the dominance of man gives way to the beauty of the earth. As the building wholly followed the needs of nature, the structure itself demonstrated the essence of the vegetation which inhabited it, with rammed earth walls for the foliage to inhabit as well as reside on. Using plant life as the main architectural element, the chapel applies the intrinsic ability of nature to calm and soothe as a means of creating a meditative environment for those mourning.
