What Our Learners Say

Peter Markow Functional Skills to Maths GCSE ‘I didn’t pass many exams at school and went straight into work when I left. I wanted to improve my knowledge so came to Bolton College to do my Functional Skills and then moved onto Maths GCSE. I’m really enjoying learning something new and wish I’d done it sooner. I’d like to do another course once I’ve passed this one – I’m not sure which subject yet but the world’s my oyster!’ www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

Naureen Ijaz English GCSE ‘In Pakistan I was very highly educated and worked as a Head Teacher of a secondary school for a number of years. However, after moving to England I realised that I needed to return to study to improve my fluency in English and gain a recognised qualification so that I can get a good job. I’m hoping to pass my English GCSE with at least a grade 4.’

Tonya Pepper Painting & Decorating Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Bolton College ‘The Apprenticeship route has been perfect for me because it’s very practical and I get to work alongside skilled trades people who share their knowledge and skills on the job. I feel that I learn much more by working in different environments, rather than sitting in a classroom, and I get lots of help and advice from my supervisor. I’ve even painted the College’s Atrium in preparation for a visit from the Mayor of Manchester, Andy Burnham. Once my Apprenticeship has finished, I’d like to continue working at Bolton College.’

Ryan Grimshaw Motor Vehicle Body & Paint Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Boundary Garage, Bury ‘Getting qualified whilst working at a garage is working really well for me. I learn better by being hands-on and the support I receive from College and at work is great. My employer has also sent me on additional training courses, such as a hybrid vehicle course and a windscreen course, so that my skills are up to date. I‘m hoping to continue working at Boundary Garage once I’m qualified.’

Aisha Rashid, Access to Social Work ‘After this, I’d like to go to university to study social work further. Eventually, I’d like to be an independent Social Worker and start an organisation that supports people from ethnic minorities to overcome barriers in society and challenge biases. I’d also like to play my part in making the UK school curriculum more open and diverse.’

Aaron Copple, Access to Health Professions ‘This course gives you a route into a wide range of medical and health careers. In fact, I started the course with the intention of going into child nursing, but decided part-way through that I was more interested in paramedic science, and I’ve been able to make this switch really easily.’

Louanna Hardman, Access to Teaching ‘This course is the perfect stepping stone before going to university to qualify as a Primary School Teacher. The course is fast-paced and you need to be on the ball, but the teachers are helpful and there are a lot of resources online to help when completing assignments.’

Derly Atehortua Access to HE in Business Management ‘I originally started studying at Bolton College three years ago and completed the ESOL programme. I enjoyed my time at College so much that I decided to continue my studies and completed my English Functional Skills and Maths GCSE, before progressing to this Access to Business qualification. The teachers are wonderful. They’re approachable, friendly and make the lessons enjoyable. The course is structured to make sure we’re well prepared for study at university. I’ve applied to study International Business at Manchester University and then I would like to join my husband in his travel business.’ Don’t forget English & Maths pg 4

Kelly Killas Accounting AAT Level 3 ‘I wanted a change of career and because I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers, decided to come to College to retrain as an Accountant. The course is challenging, but more than achievable with the support of the tutors and the other students in my class. Everyone is really friendly. Once I’ve completed this I’ll be fully qualified to get a job as an Accounts Assistant, but I may continue with my studies so I have more options in the future.’

Katherine Comaish Professional Cookery Level 3 ‘I love cooking for people and this course has really helped to build my confidence. As well as learning in the classroom we also work in the College restaurant. This has given me fantastic insight into all the behind-the-scenes work involved in catering. I’ve enjoyed learning about sourcing ingredients, ordering food and store management and I’ve loved the hustle and bustle of being in such a busy environment. I’d like to own my own café in the future and offer people an alternative to going to a pub in the evening. I’d love to serve hot drinks and big bowls of home-cooked food in a cosy atmosphere.’

Charlotte Roberts ABC Cake Decoration ‘I gave up the 9-5 a few years ago to make my dream of running a cake decorating business a reality. The practical nature of the course has been a big positive and I’ve learnt lots of new techniques that I can now use to grow my business. I’ll definitely continue with my studies in the future.’

Keeley Morris Beauty Therapy Level 2 ‘My story is quite unusual because I actually started at Bolton College as an employee, working in the college canteen. I was inspired to find out more about the learning opportunities for adults after seeing the beauty students coming to and from lessons and realised that was something I wanted to do. As a mum of three, it was difficult to find the confidence to come back to education but I’m so glad that I made the leap – I absolutely love everything about my course and the amazing opportunities that are now open to me. If you’re thinking about re-training, don’t just think about it – do it! You can achieve anything when you put your mind to it!’

Rubela Nawaz Beauty Therapy Level 3 ‘I love Bolton College so much that I travel from my home in Preston every week. The teachers are very good and everyone is very friendly. I’m passionate about Beauty Therapy and I love the whole profession. I enjoy learning about the specialist skin treatments and advanced massage techniques as they provide great health benefits to people. I would like a job as a Beauty Therapist so I can get some experience, and then open my own salon one day.’

Bianka Muller Beauty Therapy Level 3 ‘Bolton College beauty students came in to my school to do a demo – it was fantastic and really inspired me. I started at Level 1 and progressed to Level 3. The course has given me so many opportunities, and the skills I’m developing can lead to different specialities. I’ve even had a 50-day work placement in a salon. The course is challenging but I love to be challenged! Angie our tutor is amazing, she’s so caring, supportive and knowledgeable – I’ve never had a teacher like her. I’ve also taken part in lots of events, such as the College’s annual Beauty Showcase. Long term, I’d like to secure a beauty job on a cruise ship so that I can see the world.’

Elizabeth Crowther Sports Massage Diploma Level 3 ‘I’ve really enjoyed the course and my tutor has been amazing. There are lots of different massage techniques to remember, as well as the anatomy and physiological aspects, and our tutor is brilliant at explaining everything in a way that’s easy to understand and remember. I’d like to complete my Level 4 qualification next, before looking for a full-time job in massage.’

The tutors are really good and always take the time to explain the topics in depth so we fully understand them. Once I’ve completed the Foundation course I want to progress to Level 1, 2 and 3 so I’m fully Gas Safe certified.’

Chris Calderley Plastering Apprenticeship Level 2 Working at Bolton at Home ‘I applied for the Apprenticeship at Bolton at Home so I could learn a trade. I was interested in plastering because it’s an art form and there is so much variety within the role. In College, there’s always someone on hand to provide advice and the tutors are really helpful. I’ve also enjoyed mixing with other students and making new friends. Overall, it’s been a really enjoyable experience. Once I’ve passed my plastering qualifications I’m hoping to secure a permanent job at Bolton at Home and work for them long-term - they’re fantastic employers.’

Cameron Woods Carpentry & Joinery Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at CFWC Ltd ‘The Apprenticeship gives me the benefit of learning a variety of new skills whilst working on site as well as being taught in College. I enjoy working in the trade. It’s good fun and every day is different. I enjoy building roofs and fitting floors and kitchens the most. I’d like to go to university next to study Professional Building and eventually I’d like to be a Site Manager and oversee building projects.’

Hannah Mozaffari Computing Level 3 ‘Before coming to College I worked as an IT Repair Technician and decided that I needed more knowledge to help me in my job. This course has given me a deeper understanding of computing, including trouble-shooting and problem solving on a range of different devices. The classroom has lots of equipment, so we can practise our skills and experiment with different software and hardware. Our tutor is very helpful and understands that as adult learners we are often juggling work and other responsibilities with studying. I’d like to get a job in IT when I’ve finished and possibly continue my studies in the future.’

Amanda Richardson Counselling Level 3 ‘I started at Bolton College on Counselling Concepts Level 2 then progressed to Level 3. The teaching is excellent; we benefit from the huge amount of experience and knowledge that our tutor has. Once I’m qualified I’d like to work with young people, either in college or secondary school, and provide support linked to teaching or in a pastoral role.’

Bolton College’s award-winning hair & make-up artists Bolton College Hair & Make-up Artists Annalise Heald and Callum Stamp are a class act. Level 2 learners Annalise and Callum teamed up to compete in the Association of Hairdressers & Therapists (AHT) annual competition; they were crowned runners-up after amazing judges with a stunning bridal makeover of fellow student Raesa Kaduji. Callum and Annalise said: ‘It felt great to win. We were up against 11 teams in the regional heats and 22 teams in the national finals, so it’s a real achievement. Our tutor Ella was fantastic on the day, she was so supportive.’

Hannah Sutton Hairdressing Apprenticeship Level 2 Working at Noggis Hairdressing ‘I chose an Apprenticeship over full-time education because I wanted to get some experience and learn on the job as well as in College. I love being an apprentice – I’m always learning. It’s a busy salon, so there are always plenty of jobs to do and it’s never boring. I feel like I’m doing really well with the Apprenticeship; for National Apprenticeship Week in April, I was chosen by the College to be interviewed on camera, and this was used to promote the week.’

Sean Parker Barbering Apprenticeship Level 3 Working at Head Kandi ‘I’ve always wanted to be a barber. I got in to the trade at Bolton College originally as a full-time learner, gaining a Level 2 and a Level 3 in Barbering. My work placement was at Head Kandi and this is where my manager saw potential in me, and on the back of the placement, he offered me a Level 3 Apprenticeship. I’ve just finished my Apprenticeship and I loved it. I’m really committed to barbering and outside of work, I do a lot of self-study and practical work to perfect my knowledge and abilities – I always aim for a high standard of cutting skills. The Apprenticeship has given me confidence; I was pretty quiet at the start but it’s developed my interpersonal skills and now I love dealing with the clients - I’ve built up my own clientele and last year, I was so happy to win ‘Outstanding Apprentice in Barbering’ at the College’s Apprentice Awards.’

Michaela Maddocks, Bolton College Assessor ‘Sean’s proved himself to be the model apprentice and his commitment to his barbering work is so impressive. It’s been wonderful to support him throughout his Apprenticeship journey and I envisage a very bright future for him.’

Samantha Nixon Working with Children Level 3 ‘Thanks to the course at Bolton College, I was able to secure my first teaching assistant job in January and I now work with pre-school children aged three to four, helping to support their learning. The course is really thorough, and I’ve learnt a lot about child development and psychology, which I can put into practice in my job. I also find that I learn things in my job which I can then apply to my course – the two really complement each other.’ 52

Simon Budnarowski Access to Science ‘The tutors are really nice and very knowledgeable. I find the College’s Moodle system really handy in supporting my learning when I’m at home. I can revisit notes from the lessons and re-disgest the information to make sure I fully understand it.’

Iona Good Access to Nursing & Allied Health Professions ‘I’ve always wanted to be a nurse so I can help people and this course has helped me decide that I’d like to specialise in being a mental health nurse. The Access course is very demanding, but we get lots of support from the tutors who are lovely and very friendly. When I’ve finished the course I’d like to go to university before getting a job as a mental health nurse.’ www.boltoncollege.ac.uk

Josh Atkinson Motor Vehicle Body & Paint Apprenticeship Level 2 Working at H Samson (Bolton) Ltd ‘I’ve always enjoyed working on cars and doing them up, so having the chance to study and get a career in this field was a brilliant opportunity. Through the Apprenticeship I get lots of hands-on experience and receive lots of support, both from my employer and from the tutors at College. Once I’ve successfully passed my Apprenticeship I’d like to complete my Level 3 qualification and then secure work doing body repair in America or Australia.’

Tom Ruck Sports Level 3 ‘I completed the Football Academy Coaching course at Bolton College and my Sport BTEC Level 3 before going to university to complete my degree in Sport, Coaching and Development and my PGCE. I always loved being a student at Bolton College and now I’ve returned to College as a Sport Tutor, which is a dream come true! I always found the tutors easy to get on with and really approachable. The staff room door was always open for students and now I work alongside some of the people who used to teach me, and provide the same level of support to students.’

She did it!

Three gold medals for Kiera! Bolton College’s sports student and cycling champ Kiera Byland has won three gold medals at the Special Olympics World Games - bringing her haul of Olympic medals to SIX!

Kiera flew out to Abu Dhabi to represent Team GB in three cycling events. In 2015, she won three gold medals at the Special Olympics in Los Angeles, which means she’s equalled the feat of her hero Sir Chris Hoy and Bolton’s Jason Kenny.

Prior to travelling to the Games, Kiera was surprised by tutors and fellow learners with a good luck party, organised by the College’s Curriculum Lead for Sports & Public Services, Mike Bruns. Kiera’s inspiring achievements means that since returning to the UK, she’s made several appearances in newspapers and national TV, inspiring a whole new generation of athletes. What an achievement well done Kiera!

Communicating with New Applicants

The Admissions Team work with all academic departments to ensure that applicants receive a smooth and efficient service, helping your son/daughter to make the easiest possible move to College. Here are a few frequently asked questions and answers.

FAQs

1. When will my child hear something about their application? We’ll confirm we have received their application then text/email them with their interview date and a link to book their chosen time. They can also call us to book an interview time once they have received their invite. Important: please keep their mobile number and email address up-todate. 2. How often do interviews take place? Every subject interviews at least once a month on either a Wednesday or a Thursday. 3. What is a ‘conditional offer’? A conditional offer is a promise that we will provide your child with a College place as long as they achieve certain criteria. This could include obtaining particular GCSE grades, finding a suitable work placement or receiving a satisfactory reference. At

80

their interview they will be given a ‘Details of Course Offer’ form, explaining the outcome of the interview. The offer will be confirmed to them in writing. We’ll also send you an email. 4. When can they enrol? We start our enrolments on GCSE results day in August. We’ll let them know their enrolment day and time no later than the end of June. 5. What happens if my child doesn’t get the GCSE grades? Don’t panic! We will give them impartial information, advice and guidance about their options. 6. How do they make changes to their contact details? If they need to make any changes to their application, or if they have any further questions about our application process, they can contact the Admissions Team on 01204 482 155.

How you can pay for your course 1) You can pay for your course in full when you enrol; we accept cash, cheque and all major credit/debit cards. 2) You can pay for your course in instalments if the fees total £150 or more and the course is longer than 12 weeks; the total cost of the course is split into six equal payments. You will need to pay the first one when you enrol. If you enrol before your course starts in September the second payment will not come out until 1 October. If you wish to pay by instalments please bring your bank card to enrolment with the name and address of your bank account holding branch. Note: All fees must be paid before the course end date and therefore the number of instalments may be reduced.

IMPORTANT: What to bring with you when you enrol If you don’t pay for your course, you will need to bring evidence of your benefit or income. For courses with AD in the course code you will need to bring your existing qualifications. To set up an instalment plan you will need to bring your bank card and the address of your bank. If someone else is paying for your course, the person named on the bank card will need to be present when setting up the instalment plan. For more information on the evidence you need to provide at enrolment please visit www.boltoncollege.ac.uk/fees Please note: Further restrictions may apply to some courses. Please ask an Enrolment Officer for more information.
