For learners with learning difficulties & disabilities

Skills for Independence provides the opportunity for learners with a range of learning difficulties and disabilities to progress their life experience, confidence and maths and English. This is achieved through further learning, developing independence and completing work experience.

Our programmes provide a range of opportunities to personalise progression to the next level. The programmes focus on developing employability skills, independence, maths and English, and enterprise skills, with ‘Enterprise Week’ and competitions running throughout the year.

Courses are usually free if you are aged 16-18; a British or European Union resident; enrolled in a full/part-time government-funded course.

DISCRETIONARY BURSARY

For households earning under £35,000 annually, this bursary offers up to £360 per year, with additional funds for travel if you don’t qualify for the Our Pass.

STUDENT SUPPORT ALLOWANCE

This bursary supports those who are in care or care-leavers; receive Employment Support (Allowance and Disability Living; Allowance/ Personal Independence; Payment in your own right); receiving Universal Credit in place of Income Support, in your own right.

CARE TO LEARN

Once you’ve had your place confirmed, you’ll be able to collect your ID card during induction.

HOW OFTEN ARE INTERVIEWS?

We are no longer holding interviews; we make decisions based on your qualifications on entry - in other words, your predicted grades and actual grades once your GCSE results are confirmed.

We believe it’s important you get the opportunity to see our College facilities and meet some of the tutors, so we hold Information Events every month, starting from November.

WHAT’S A CONDITIONAL OFFER?

A conditional offer guarantees you a College place if you meet certain criteria, such as specific GCSE grades. This offer will be confirmed in writing.

HOW DO I JOIN & ENROL?

Enrolment starts around Easter and we’ll email you the details. There’s no need to wait for your results, you can still accept your offer and enrol - we’ll retrieve your results from the Government website on results day.

You can also upload your results slip to your Learner Hub account. Confirmation of your place will be sent to you.

Enrol early, confirm your attendance on the College Induction, and secure your place!
