Whilst the past eighteen months has been a period of significant change for the Bolton School Foundation, and for all of us globally, the School’s ethos and spirit has endured.
On 1 October 2021, the Foundation’s Governing Body announced a structural change which created the new position of Head of Foundation, which will oversee the overall direction of all elements of the Foundation, and a new Primary Division, incorporating the School’s Nursery, Pre-School Class, Infant School, two Junior Schools and wraparound childcare facility, Kidzone. Philip Britton, MBE, the Boys’ Division Headmaster since 2008, was appointed to the role of Head of Foundation, whilst Sue Faulkner, the Head of Beech House, the School’s infant school, was appointed to the role of Head of the Primary Division. Nic Ford and Lynne Kyle – both previously Deputy Heads in the two Divisions - will act as Head of the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions respectively.
Lord Leverhulme’s founding ethos – that children of the highest potential should be afforded the best possible education, irrespective of their financial circumstances –formed the blueprint for this new structure, which will help us keep fees affordable for parents whilst driving forward the Governors’ agenda of widening access to the Foundation through our bursary scheme. Earlier in the summer, the Foundation was delighted to be nominated for two social mobility awards - in both Independent School Parent Magazine’s School of the Year Awards and in the UK Social Mobility Awards 2021. These nominations reflect our ongoing efforts to ensure that the Foundation continues to act as an engine of social mobility for Bolton and the wider area; work which will continue to develop as our organisational changes take effect.
The reconfigured structure was made from a position of great strength of the Foundation, which has record numbers of pupils in this new academic year and is truly thriving, despite the ongoing effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Whilst the ongoing impact of coronavirus has, inevitably, continued to cast a shadow over School life and presented
numerous disruptions to usual routines, the indefatigable spirit of our pupils and staff members, and the support of the wider School community, has ensured that School life has continued, vibrantly, both inside and outside the classroom. Nowhere is the outcome of that determination more evident than in the fundraising success the Foundation has enjoyed in the 2020-21 academic year, during which an exceptional £873,000 was raised for the Bursary Fund and a further £143,000 for hardship funding. We remain incredibly grateful to each of our donors, whose steadfast support throughout the past 18 months has meant that our bursary scheme could continue uninterrupted. Your generosity continues to make a real difference to our bursary pupils, whose membership of our School community was made possible entirely as a result of your support.
We remain committed to ensuring that any child with talent and ability should be able to achieve their full potential through the support of our bursary scheme. The Governors’ long-standing ambition is that, by 2030, the Bursary Fund will be in a position to provide financial support for one in three pupils in the Boys’ and Girls’ Divisions, replicating the provision enjoyed at the peak of the Direct Grant scheme. Whilst that era of Government funding is long-gone, our ultimate goal of needs-blind open access remains a stretching, but achievable, ambition for the Foundation, and, with the continued support and generosity of all those within our School community, we are determined that it will ultimately be realised.
On behalf of the Governing Body, staff and pupils of the Bolton School Foundation, thank you, sincerely, for your support and encouragement during the past academic year.
With best wishes for the festive season
Ian Riley Chairman of the Bolton School Governing BodyThis summer, 49 members of the Class of 2021 left the School having received bursarial support for their education:
• 83% of those bursary recipients received grades marked A*-B in the A Level results published this summer, with 53% of those pupils awarded grades A*-A;
• 37 of those bursary pupils left to take up a place at university, including 25 pupils now studying at one of the prestigious Russell Group universities.
“My education at Bolton School has allowed me to realise my talents, develop my self-confidence, and inspired me to achieve success in my future career.”
“My time at Bolton School has been incredible: I feel extremely privileged to have been given the opportunity to study here and couldn’t be more grateful to all the donors who made this possible.”
A Bolton School education can have a lifelong impact on a child’s opportunities and ambitions.
During the 2020-21 academic year, the School community made pledges and gifts totaling £1.16 million.
£873,000 was given in support of the Bolton School Bursary Fund, £143,000 was given in support of Hardship Funding, and a further £146,000 was given in support of academic prizes, university scholarships and extra-curricular funding for bursary recipients:
• £45,000 was received as a result of the generosity of parents of the departing Class of 2020 pupils, who allowed their child’s deposit to be gifted to the Bursary Fund;
• 184 donors made a regular donation to the Bursary Fund;
• £417,000 was donated to the Bursary Fund by Old Boys, Old Girls and Former Staff of the School.
As a result of this exceptional generosity, last year the School spent £3.06m on means-tested bursary assistance and hardship grants, supporting 346 – one in five – pupils across the two Senior Schools. 20% of those bursary recipients received full-fee remission, equating to 4% of all Senior School pupils.
During the 2020-21 academic year, 28 pupils whose families faced financial distress were able to remain at the School after benefiting from Hardship Funding.
During the 2020-21 academic year, the School received just over £113,000 in legacy gifts from members of the School community who had chosen to remember the School in their will.
Two of these bequests were made by Old Boy and former Boys’ Division teacher Roger Kirk.
Roger was a pupil in the Boys’ Division from 1942 to 1949, having been awarded a scholarship to join from Brandwood School in Deane. During his time at School he was a keen Scout, becoming a Patrol and eventually Troop Leader, and was appointed as a Monitor in his final year. After studying Agriculture at Leeds University, Roger had a brief career as a Farm Manager before returning in 1958 – at the request of Mr Poskitt – to the Boys’ Division, where he taught full-time until his retirement in 1992.
“The epitome of the complete Schoolmaster”, during his almost four decades on the teaching staff Roger taught Mathematics, Science and Careers, amongst other subjects, was both a Blockmaster and Housemaster, founded the School’s coach company and led the School’s fundraising appeal for the Arts Centre.
Roger inspired countless pupils with his love of the outdoors, leading School camps to Instow, Saundersfoot and Howick, and pioneering the School’s Outdoor
Pursuits programme at Cautley. His commitment to the School Scout Troop continued throughout his life, acting as Assistant Scout Master and Group Scout Leader, and then as a member of the BP Scout Guild.
In his legacy to the School, Roger made two bequests of equal value. The first was to the Bursary Fund, to enable other children to benefit from a Bolton School education; the second, made directly to the Boys’ Division, will be used to provide financial support for boys wishing to attend the annual Saundersfoot Camp for Year 8 pupils, for whom the cost might otherwise be prohibitive.
These bequests reflect Roger’s lifelong love for the School, his desire to ensure that subsequent generations should have the same opportunity to study here that he himself enjoyed, and his passion for the benefits of outdoor pursuits.
We are honoured to receive the generous support of so many members of the Bolton School community, and take our responsibilities in the stewardship and management of these gifts seriously:
• Every donation we receive goes directly to the Bursary Fund - all costs associated with the running of the Development Office are borne entirely by the School;
• Outside School hours, we use our buildings and facilities to generate income, with any profits from the School’s trading arm, BSSL, and the School’s Nursery, gifted back to the Bursary Fund annually;
• The School’s Bursary Fund is managed with care by the Governing Body’s Investment Committee, to ensure investment gains are maximised whilst preserving the Fund’s capital for the future;
• The School’s Clerk and Treasurer applies a strict formula to calculate the total annual funds available to spend on bursaries, in order to preserve and grow the value of the Fund in an endowment style, thus ensuring financial support remains available to both current and future pupils;
• All bursaries are entirely means-tested, awarded via a transparent and rigorous allocations process designed to ensure that financial support reaches those who are the most deserving of it. This allocations process, which includes detailed financial checks and individual interviews, is reviewed annually, and all bursary applications are renewed entirely at the end of Year 11, before a child’s admission to the Sixth Form.
The Development Office is responsible for all fundraising activity in support of the Bolton School Bursary Fund.
If you would like to make a gift to the Bursary Fund, or are considering remembering the School in your will, please contact Laura Firth, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, on 01204 434718, or at development@boltonschool.org, who will be happy to discuss with you, in confidence, how you might choose to support the School.
The School is sincerely grateful to all of those donors who have offered their financial support to the Foundation during the past academic year:
