RECENT PROJECTS : ACTIVITY CENTRE
CHALLENGE WALL
Since the last newsletter was sent we have been busy adding to our activities on site. The Challenge Wall was built in-house by our team here at the Hall, and is annually inspected by our specialist ropes course company. The project was funded by Bolton School Alumna Deborah Lyon in memory of her late mother The Challenge Wall is the perfect activity to develop collaborative skills and then review the performance and try to improve
FLAGPOLE
Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, we flew a flag at half mast from the tower chimney as a mark of respect, given we had no flagpole. The new flagpole was installed last summer to mark the coronation of King Charles III. In the photo is Centre Manager Tim Taylor with Sam and Alex Scott, the High Sherriff and Lord Lieutenant of Cumbria, respectively Alex’s Grandfather Francis Scott owned the Hall during the 1940s
ARCHERY SHELTER
Another in-house development project kindly supported by Mrs Deborah Lyon was the new archery range and stretch tent shelter This has radically improved the options for archery at the Hall, whatever the weather. It also provides shelter for expedition cooking, reviewing learning and many other games and activities
RECENT PROJECTS : THE DAIRY
NEW ROOF & UPDATED INTERIOR
The downstairs of The Dairy has enjoyed a much needed facelift including new floor coverings throughout, a wonderful new kitchen, an updated, modern shower room and a brand new comfy sofa bed!
Our recent guests have been very complimentary about the upgrades!

OUTDOOR LEARNING IN THE NEWS
In January, the South Lakes MP Tim Farron presented to the House of Commons, a Private Members’ Bill to make residential outdoor learning part of the school curriculum.
Before Christmas, Tim held an event in Parliament to drum up support for the bill amongst MPs and Peers, and also to promote the positive effect outdoor learning can have on young people
Tim, who is also the co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Outdoor Learning, said: “Our local outdoor education centres - whether it’s the Outward Bound at Ullswater, the Bendrigg Trust at Old Hutton, the Brathay Trust near Ambleside, or Patterdale Hall at Glenridding – do a phenomenal job in giving young people experiences which have incredible benefits to their mental health and confidence, and also create memories and friendships which last a lifetime
“But outdoor education should not just be for the lucky or the privileged It should be an experience that is available to every young person from every school in our country.
“That’s why I’m proud to be championing this bill which I hope the Government will get behind.”
COMING SOON: GREENHOUSE HERITAGE PROJECT
RESTORING THE OLD GREENHOUSE
We are currently working with the Lake District National Park Planning Authority and the Conservation Officer to agree a renovation of our Grade II listed Greenhouse here at Patterdale Hall.
We would like to re-purpose the space into a heritage centre and map planning room, making best use of its long slim shape
FUNDRAISING
Once we have an agreed plan in place for the Greenhouse we are going to work to raise the funds for the restorations We hope that people will give generously to what we see as the last piece of the jigsaw that is the renovation of the Patterdale Hall main buildings
Watch this space for more updates.

TIM’S UPDATE!
Residential Outdoor Learning remains a key strand of the Bolton School journey and we were delighted to have this recognised during the recent ISA inspection report as a key strength of the school Behind the scenes I am working on a national basis to support the Residential Outdoor Education Bills in England, Wales and Scotland to make a residential experience a statutory requirement for all students.
IN THE GROUNDS
TEAM BUILDING IN WHITBY
In January the team bundled into the minibuses and made their way to the East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre, part of the the North Yorkshire Outdoor Learning Service On Day 1 the team enjoyed a tour of the centre and found out about their operation The wish list grew as the team spotted boot washing stations, an indoor climbing wall and a dry ski slope! Day 2 included a wonderful team building canoe trip down the River Esk and into Whitby Harbour.
The neighbouring farm tenancy has changed hands after two generations of farming The tenant farmer Jack is going to use some of the land for conservation grazing of cattle This has prompted us to renew some of the fences between us that we are responsible for
Some old fashioned hard graft from our grounds team saved Bolton School £1000 by removing 370 metres of fencing ahead of the contractor installing the new fence
