Bolton School Primary Division Junior Boys’ School

Autumn Term, 2022 WEEK A Wednesday 5th October

From Mr. King

Children’s ability to read is often cited as a predictor for children’s future success. At Park Road, much is done to encourage and teach reading including ECAs, regular reading opportunities, library lessons and, of course, English lessons. However, there is nothing quite like the inspiration of meeting real life authors.

Foundation Open Morning

Last week, our boys had the opportunity to listen to Cressida Cowell live! She provided a lively talk explaining how she came to be an author. She also talked about her books and some of the characters she had created. More details can be found overleaf.

Next week, our boys will have another opportunity to hear from children’s author, Lenny Henry. He will be discussing his books “The Boy With Wings” and “The Book of Legends” in a live broadcast via Zoom. We will purchase our own set of books for school but those who are interested are also welcome to purchase from bookstores and online marketplaces.

On Saturday 8th October, we will be opening our doors to the public from 9.30am for our annual Open Morning. As ever, we are always grateful for the support of boys, who help out in so many different ways. If you know of any families that you think might be interested in learning more about us, do please alert them to the event. We are asking that enquirers pre-register their attendance at: boltonschool.org/openday.

As we move into the darker Autumnal days, extra vigilance is required around the roads. Please remind your son, as we will, that he must cross Park Road with Barry (our lollipop man) and, where appropriate, Dobson Road with Sergeants and not elsewhere. It is also important that you continue to drop the boys off in safe places, however tempting it is to try and get as near to the doors as possible in the dark and wet mornings. Can I also please remind you not to use West Street to drop off and pick up your son? We have discussed road safety with the boys in our weekly assembly and they showed a clear understanding of the rules.

We will be holding our Harvest Festival Assembly on Wednesday 12th October. please find linked here a list of suggested donations from Urban Outreach Due to restrictions on the number of people we can safely accommodate in the Hall, we invite Year 3 parents and any parents new to school to this special assembly. Coffee, tea and refreshments will be served in the Dining Room from 8.15am.

Please continue to send in your donations (no fresh produce, please), which we give to local charity, Urban Outreach, as part of their Winter Watch project after the event. Please ensure that all donations are well within the expiry date as they may not be used immediately.

Thank you for all the generous donations to date. SK

Primary Division Parents’ Association

As you may know, in each of the three Primary Division schools; Beech House, Hesketh House and Park Road, our Parents' Associations are experiencing a period of change as those who previously served on the PA committees have moved on, either to a new part of the Primary Division or to Boys' or Girls' Division.

This, coupled with what we appreciate to be the increased pressures on our parents' time, suggests that this is a good time to consider how we might restructure the PAs in order to make the best use of the time, expertise and enthusiasm of our whole parent body, in order to develop fund-raising and social opportunities which benefit our children and parents.

We would welcome the views and suggestions of all of our parents and, as Park Road parents, we invite you to attend a meeting to represent Park Road and discuss the future organisation of our Parents' Associations. This will be held in the Arts Centre at 7pm on Wednesday 12th October.

As the Park Road PA, we already have a Halloween themed Breakfast Club organised for Thursday 19th October and we shall be providing refreshments back at school immediately after the House Cross Country event on the afternoon of the last day of term (Friday 20th October).

There will also be a pre-loved uniform sale at that time.

Anyone interested in getting involved and helping out at either event should contact Mrs Iddon in the School Office. KEW

Calling all bakers !

Boys, parents (and even staff !) : you are all invited to don your aprons and get baking for the cake sale which will take place after the House Cross Country fixture on the afternoon of Friday 20th October.

Please bring all your goodies to Mrs Iddon in the School Office on the morning of Friday 20th October perhaps Sergeant’s celebrity-endorsed famous cheesecake will make a reappearance for the occasion!

Lost Property

Unnamed clothes etc which are found around the school are placed in the lost property crate in the cloakroom area.

Named items are returned to the classes by the monitors responsible for lost property.

Every half term, we will empty out the lost property crate, displaying the unclaimed and unnamed items on the small yard or in the Hall – giving parents a chance to claim back their items at the end of the day.

Any unclaimed items left at the end of each half term will be recycled locally.

Please ensure all items brought into school are clearly named. CDH CDH

Catch of the Day !

This week, the boys had to dodge the raindrops but it didn’t dampen their spirits and they enjoyed learning how to cast.

It wasn’t quite as easy as it looked when Justin demonstrated but they all did very well and particularly Nolan who managed the furthest distance.

Whilst several boys were practising their casting, on the far side of the pond, Bradan hooked a lovely little carp.

Next week, the boys will have a mini fishing match, using keep nets and weighing their total catch in the hour.

Recycled Art Project

We have an exciting new project planned, to spice up the interior design of the Dining Room and get the boys at Park Road recycling more plastic. We are hoping to recreate the Bolton School crest out of recycled bottle tops, to sit above the hot plates in the dinning room. Please could you collect as many bottle tops as possible, wash them and bring them in to school when you have a bag full. These can be any size or colour, and any that aren’t used will be sent away to be recycled after we have finished the project. When you are ready to send a batch of bottle tops in, please ask your son to give them to Mr Winstanley.

Senior School Bees

This afternoon, our newly formed Eco Committee had the privilege of meeting the Senior School bees in what was an absolutely fascinating session, learning all about the role of the beekeepers at BD, courtesy of Mr Butchart. They looked at the component parts of the hive, discussed the differences between the different types of bees (drones, workers and queen) in the hive and gained an insight into the lifecycle of the honeybee and how they adapt to the conditions throughout the year.

The boys learned how wax is extracted and refined: they were all given an original Bolton School lip balm and smelled the ‘school made’ lavender scented candles. However, the favourite part of the session was the runny honey taste off!

Did you know that the life span of a bee depends on when it is born? A bee born in June will live for approx 6 weeks whereas one born in September will survive for up to 6 months! Did you know that a Queen Bee will never have a King! KEW and SL

October Geography Mission

This month, we welcome back the Great Big Geography Bake Off!

Calling all young bakers! Get yourselves into the kitchen and create a delicious, geographically themed cake. Design, bake, photograph, upload to Showbie Whole School and then…….EAT!

Or, if you time it right, you could always bring it along to the homemade cake sale after the House Cross Country on the last day of term.

Achievements

Huge congratulations once again to Jasper Daniels, in 4A, for representing Bolton School in the National Schools’ Indoor Open.

Jasper won 1st place in his category, despite having an unfortunate crash on his second run!

Jasper will take part in several more ski events in the coming months and everyone at Park Road wishes him continued success in all his races.

Well done to Ashton in Year 6, for his brilliant success this weekend at the recent Bolton, Central Lancashire & Manchester SWPA Autumn 2022 swimming meet. He gained the following medals for his age group:

Bronze medal in 100m breast stroke, Bronze medal in 200m breast stroke

Silver medal in 100m individual medley.

Amazing achievements, Ashton. Well done !

Diana Award Anti-Bullying Ambassador Training

On Tuesday, our school hosted an Anti-Bullying Ambassador training day led by The Diana Award Team.

The event was attended by over 120 children from 12 schools based across the North West.

A group of our Year 5 boys attended the training, learning lots about what bullying behaviour looks like and how to support those who experience it. We are looking forward to promoting our zero tolerance policy around school helping others in need. RL

Congratulations to Ayaan Karim who has won the Artist of the Week award for his imaginative response to the work of Yinka Shinobare OBE. Pop down to the Art Room for your prize and your 5 merits. The current Artist of the Week is Piet Mondrian. JM

Sports News Round Up Cross Country Success

Cross Country season is well and truly back and our U10 and U11 Cross Country teams have made a tremendous start to the season.

Last Wednesday, teams competed in the annual AJIS Cross Country Championships hosted by Rossall School. The course is always a challenging one, offering a variety of terrain and a windy run along the coast. We were very lucky to have a lovely sunny afternoon there and the boys seemed to enjoy both the course and the afternoon itself.

All boys competed really well and showed great support for one another, as well as the Hesketh House team running too.

We had some excellent individual achievements in the U10 team, including a fantastic run from Amos Thompson coming in 4th place, Aaron Pierson, 14th , Harlan Moore, 15th, Raees Munshi, 24th, Billy Brindle, 28th, Marcus Oper, 59th and Flynn Humphreys, 64th

Due to a fantastic team score, the U10 team came in 2nd place over all, all receiving their silver medals.

A brilliant achievement for this team. Well done, boys!

Up next to race was the U11 team, running brilliantly again also with excellent individual positions:

Ashton Morrissey, came 8th, Ronnie Woods, 14th, Mack Kelsall, 34th, Teddy Daly, 67th, Chris Fern, 68th, and Aash Govindu, 72nd

Well done to all boys who competed on Wednesday. You all ran brilliantly. MLB

Bolton Schools’ Cross Country League

Last Thursday, boys from Running Club and the Cross Country team, competed in the Bolton Schools’ Cross Country League at Moss Bank Park. After last week’s cancellation due to the weather, it was a great relief to have dry conditions for their first race out of the four week league. This is a very busy race and boys showed excellent determination to make their way through the vast amount of competitors, whilst pacing themselves through the course.

Boys finished in the following positions:

Ashton Morrissey: 9th

Billy Brindle: 40th

Marcus Oper: 48th Raees Munshi: 64th

Teddy Daly: 76th Aash Govindu: 124th

Shrey Balme: 140th

Well done to all boys for competing in all the fixtures last week.

MLB

AJIS Rugby

Well done to the ten Year 4 boys who took part in the AJIS U9 Rugby Festival on Monday at Manchester Grammar School.

The boys improved massively as the afternoon went on, showing good tackle technique, passing and communication.

Well done boys.

As part of World Mental Health Day on Monday 10th October and in association with the Young Minds Charity, we are once again going to be taking part in the ‘Hello Yellow’ campaign. Throughout the week, the children will be taking part in a range of different activities to highlight the importance of discussing mental health and not hiding away from it. We all struggle with how we're feeling sometimes and it is normal to have ups and downs.

On Tuesday 11th October we ask that your son comes into school wearing something yellow for our whole school assembly. This could be a yellow top, scarf, socks, headband and/or hat. The colour yellow represents positivity and happiness as well as being a symbol to show children that they are not alone with their mental health.

To help raise funds for Young Minds (the UK’s leading charity fighting for children and young people's mental health) we are asking for a small contribution of your choosing to be donated to our just giving page. You can do this by following the link below or scanning the QR code. Last year we managed to raise over £600!

Cressida Cowell Visit

The boys were treated to an author visit from a genuine literary superstar last week.

Cressida Cowell is the author of the hugely successful book and now film AND television franchise “How To Train Your Dragon”, alongside a huge selection of other childrens’ books.

Not content with just being a writer, Cressida is also a spectacular illustrator, who brings her stories to life through research, years of sketching and her finely honed author’s skills.

Cressida shared how being creative from a young age (writing stories, making up games and drawing, drawing, drawing) set her on the route to what became unexpected worldwide success.

Cressida also answered a wide range of questions from pupils, before throwing out hundreds of imaginary creative feathers which each child could use to write their own stories!

A really inspiring visit. If your son is feeling inspired, direct him to submit an entry to the “Design Your Own Dragon” contest, which is on the whole school Showbie folder for a chance to win a fantastic prize. Deadline for entries is 21st October. JM
