Wednesday 12th October

We are in the middle of yet another jam-packed week at Park Road! Already, we’ve seen three sports fixtures, one guest speaker, Hello Yellow day, a virtual visit from actor, comedian and author Lenny Henry AND an amazing Harvest Assembly. We still have another cross country fixture this afternoon, as well as a trip to the theatre for some of our boys on Friday night.

Our annual Foundation Open Morning saw plenty of families visit our part of school and they were all complimentary about Park Road. On Saturday, I spoke of the busy nature of the school and how the opportunities we provide for the boys keep them engaged, develop skills, passions and personal attributes.

At this point, I would like to thank all of our community for preparing the school but in particular, I would like to single out our Year 5 boys who: demonstrated musical talents; took part in Cub activities; displayed their sporting prowess and took over fifty families on tours of Park Road. The Year 5 boys were exceptional ambassadors for our school and all of our visitors were complimentary about them. The boys spoke enthusiastically and expertly about the school and we hope they also found the experience rewarding and enjoyable.

Yesterday, we celebrated Hello Yellow by coming to school in yellow items of clothing. Students also took part in a great assembly lead by Mr Livesley and other activities in class to raise awareness about mental health issues. The key message was that ‘It is OK to not be OK’ and to promote understanding of both themselves and others. As we approach the half term, it is important that the boys use this as an opportunity to consider how they treat each other and know that people bring different moods and issues with them to school.

Next week, Tuesday 18th October, we will have our individual and class school photos. We are also offering families with children across the Foundation the opportunity to bring in siblings before school from 8.15am. Please note, that due to staffing issues, we are unable to collect students or take them back to their respective parts of school. Please ensure your son comes to school looking his best we will do our best to keep him looking that way (at least up until the photo!).

Please could I remind you that smart watches are NOT permitted in school and your son should not bring these into school at any time. All boys should have earphones for use with their iPad, as mentioned in the school kit list at the beginning of term. A number of boys don’t have any and this is impacting on lessons. Have a great week!

COLLECTION FROM BEECH HOUSE

Cake & Uniform Sale,

Primary Division Parents’ Association

As you may know, in each of the three Primary Division schools; Beech House, Hesketh House and Park Road, our Parents' Associations are experiencing a period of change as those who previously served on the PA committees have moved on, either to a new part of the Primary Division or to Boys' or Girls' Division.

This, coupled with what we appreciate to be the increased pressures on our parents' time, suggests that this is a good time to consider how we might restructure the PAs in order to make the best use of the time, expertise and enthusiasm of our whole parent body, in order to develop fund-raising and social opportunities which benefit our children and parents.

We would welcome the views and suggestions of all of our parents and, as Park Road parents, we invite you to attend a meeting to represent Park Road and discuss the future organisation of our Parents' Associations. This will be held tonight in the Arts Centre at 7pm.

As the Park Road PA, we already have a Halloween themed Breakfast Club organised from 8am on Thursday 20th October and we shall be providing refreshments back at school immediately after the House Cross Country event on the afternoon of the last day of term (Friday 21st October).

There will also be pre-loved uniform sale in the Park Road Dining Room at that time.

Anyone interested in getting involved and helping out at either event should contact Mrs Iddon in the School Office. KEW

Calling all bakers !

Boys, parents (and even staff !) : you are all invited to don your aprons and get baking for the cake sale which will take place after the House Cross Country fixture on the afternoon of Friday 21st October.

Please bring all your goodies to Mrs Iddon in the School Office on the morning of Friday 21st October perhaps Sergeant’s celebrity-endorsed famous cheesecake will make a reappearance for the occasion!

Charity Awareness

Saturday 22nd October is PMSF awareness day and famous landmarks around the country are being lit green to promote awareness of Phelan McDermid Syndrome.

More details can be found linked here : https://www.pmsf.org.uk/shinegreen

George James (in Year 6) will be at the windmill in Lytham to show support for this small charity, which is close to the heart of his family, as a friend has PMSF, a very rare condition where a segment of chromosome 22 is missing.

All are welcome to join George and his family on Saturday 22nd from 5pm in Lytham to show support and learn more about the charity and the people it helps.

Catch of the Day !

This week, boys were learning how to cast with a Spomb, which is a device, shaped like a small bomb, that is filled with bait and opens up when it hits the water.

With his accurate casting skills, George won the competition to hit the float. Boys were also introduced to the electronic bite alarm system and tip fishing!

Further highlights included Sam landing a 4lb 12 oz carp and Rayan a rather large, slippery tench!

Next week, boys are looking forward to taking part in a mini fishing match for our final session.

Recycled Art Project

We have an exciting new project planned, to spice up the interior design of the Dining Room and get the boys at Park Road recycling more plastic. We are hoping to recreate the Bolton School crest out of recycled bottle tops, to sit above the hot plates in the dinning room. Please could you collect as many bottle tops as possible, wash them and bring them in to school when you have a bag full. These can be any size or colour, and any that aren’t used will be sent away to be recycled after we have finished the project. When you are ready to send a batch of bottle tops in, please ask your son to give them to Mr Winstanley.

October Geography Mission

This month, we welcome back the Great Big Geography Bake Off!

Calling all young bakers! Get yourselves into the kitchen and create a delicious, geographically themed cake. Design, bake, photograph, upload to Showbie Whole School and then…….EAT!

Or, if you time it right, you could always bring it along to the homemade cake sale after the House Cross Country on the last day of term. KEW

Christmas Pudding Orders

It is coming up to that special time of the year again already !

If you would like to help raise funds for the GDPA, why not order a delicious luxury plum, sticky toffee or lemon pudding.

Please place your order on the link here. Order forms are downloadable on Parent Portal too.

The year 6 boys were given a wonderful, thought-provoking talk earlier this week from Polar explorer, Alex Hibbert.

Alex told them all about his previous expeditions in the Arctic and about his forthcoming travels.

The boys were enthralled, excited and astonished by the talk perhaps we have some future explorers in our midst ! AW

Lost Property

Unnamed clothes etc which are found around the school are placed in the lost property crate in the cloakroom area.

Named items are returned to the classes by the monitors responsible for lost property. Every half term, we will empty out the lost property crate, displaying the unclaimed and unnamed items on the small yard or in the Hall – giving parents a chance to claim back their items at the end of the day. Any unclaimed items left at the end of each half term will be recycled locally.

Please ensure all items brought into school are clearly named. CDH

Achievements

Congratulations to Aaryan Nayyar who continues to excel at karting. Aaryan showed excellent pace at a practice race last weekend, putting him 13th out of 24 drivers on lap time. Sunday was a mixture of results for him and in two heats, Aaryan’s engine did not perform as well as it should have which resulted in Aaryan having to start 22nd for the final race, working his way up to 12th by the second lap, only for the race to be red flagged. This resulted in a 17th place finish for Aaryan.

By way of background. Aaryan is racing against children from 8 to 12 years old and is one of the youngest and least experienced on the grid, having only been in the sport for 11 months. It is worth noting that most drivers have at least four years of racing experience and come from families with some sort of racing background.

We wish Aaryan all the best to push on this winter and to become better and ready himself for two big competitions next year; the LGM and British Championships.

Congratulations also go to Anhad in Year 4, who has been made captain of his football team, FC Strikers Titans.

The team has won two consecutive matches under his captaincy. Well done, Anhad!

Harvest Assembly

This morning, we welcomed Steve Bottrill from Urban Outreach and several of our new parents into School to celebrate Harvest together.

Steve spoke to us about families on our own doorsteps here in Bolton who, for various reasons, are in need of Urban Outreach’s support to feed their families and manage to overcome crisis points in their lives.

He told the boys about the story of the miracle of the Feeding of the 5000 and how he believed that miracles are still happening today because when people are in need around us, the local community comes together and provides for its neighbours.

We would like to join Steve in thanking you all for your amazing generosity this year.

The stage was bedecked with tins and packages of food that will be literally life saving for some of the people living in Bolton. Thank you! KEW

Bolton Schools’ Cross Country League

Well done to all the boys who competed in another fantastic run at Moss Bank Park last week, where we earned a team score of 78 with our first four runners counting towards our weekly league score. MLB

AJIS Rugby

On Monday, Mr Price and Mrs Winstanley took a very excited group of Year 3 boys to Manchester Grammar School to take part in the AJIS Year 3 Rugby Festival, alongside pupils from 13 other regional schools.

For these boys, it was their first experience of representing Park Road on an away sports fixture and they certainly enjoyed it!

All of the boys entered into the participative spirit of the event, running their socks off and stripping the tags with gusto. There was great sportsmanship and camaraderie on display and they showed themselves to be great ambassadors for their school.

We expected a few tired boys to fall asleep on the return journey but they were having none of that: instead, we were treated to a rather raucous rendition of “Green Green Grass” on repeat!! Not quite George Ezra but……. TP/KEW

House Cross Country

House Cross Country will take place on Friday 21st October on the Senior Levels. The races will take place at 2.00pm for Y3/4 and then at 2.30 pm for Y5/6.

When the races have finished, boys and staff will head back to Park Road to change and assemble in the Hall for the presentation of the House cups.

Parents are invited back to Park Road where our PA will be serving tea, coffee and homemade cakes in the Dining Room and there will also be a (pre-loved) uniform sale. Parental access to school will be via West Street, the playground and the entrance adjacent to the Dining Room.

World Mental Health Day Wear Yellow !

On Tuesday, the boys and staff came to school wearing yellow to highlight the importance of discussing mental health and not hiding away from it.

Here at Park Road, we know that it is ok to not be ok and that there are lots of people we can talk to and lots of strategies we can use to help us feel better. The boys enjoyed a range of activities with their form teachers as well as whole school activities like our very own photo booth and planting the daffodil bulbs provided by our Eco Committee
