Bolton School Primary Division Junior Boys’
School
This week has seen a flurry of trips and visits, with Year 4 visiting the Liverpool Philharmonic as part of their music education; Year 5 visiting Ordsall Hall, as part of their study of Tudors in History and Year 6 to Cuerden Valley, as part of their geography studies on rivers.
The trips really do add an extra dimension to the boys’ learning and understanding of our curriculum: they offer a chance to engage with local experts, glean new information and inspire new lines of inquiry. In the coming week, there will be follow up lessons and discussions on these visits.
In each of these visits, we have been supported by parent volunteers, who have been vital in ensuring the trips can go ahead safely. Many thanks to all those parents who have helped out or will be helping out in the coming weeks.
Our trips to Patterdale Hall are rapidly approaching and, on 23rd March, we will be holding our Patterdale Hall Information Evening for Year 3 and Year 4 parents and any other parents new to the school this year. If you have not yet done so, please fill in this Google Form which indicates your attendance at the event (sent 10th March). We can then make suitable arrangements to accommodate all attending parents.
On Tuesday, we took the first of our Year 5 groups to Ordsall Hall in Salford. Ordsall Hall is a Grade 1 listed Tudor manor house. The building has had Tudor nobles, an Earl, artists, priests and even rumoured ghosts amongst its occupants! Thankfully, we did not see any ghosts, but we were ably guided around the manor by ‘Lady Catherine’ and ‘Betsy’, who gave us a glimpse into the lives of rich and poor Tudors.
We learned the roles and conditions of servants and how the ‘nobles’ of the era managed to keep themselves clean by bathing once a month! The boys had a great time and the visit stoked curiosity and gave them a chance to show off some of their knowledge from our studies on the Tudors. The second group of Year 5s are on the trip today.

Achievements
Congratulations to our hockey players who braved the cold to take part in the U11 Lancashire & Cumbria Hockey Tournament last week in Lytham, accompanied by Mrs Faulkner and Mr Sutcliffe.
The boys all played excellently and drew one game and won three, cementing their place in the forthcoming North West tournament later this month.
Good luck to all the boys taking part in the AJIS Hockey tournament at the Leverhulme Pavilion. Spectators most welcome ! SAF
Last Sunday, George James in 6C played one of the last rugby games of the year with his team, Leigh Raiders RUFC. They have remained undefeated this season and this week George was selected as player of the match. This was for displaying excellent team spirit, try scoring and also for setting up a number of tries with his excellent passing. Well done, George !
Year 6 Trip to Cuerden Valley Park
Yesterday, Year 6 had to cope with every type of weather for their fieldwork at Cuerden Valley Park which linked to the current geography curriculum topic of ‘Rivers’. The boys spent the day down at the River Lostock carrying out various activities including water sampling and observing river processes in action. Unfortunately, due to the recent heavy rainfall and snow, the water in the river was very high and fast and so it wasn't safe for the boys to actually get into the river, but they still had lots of fun.
From the water samples collected, the boys were able to identify all sorts of river life and conclude that the water in the river at Cuerden is very clean and sustains a great variety of plant and animal/insect life. The boys also spotted a heron on the river and were very lucky to see a kingfisher at the ox-bow lake.
In our next geography lesson, the field sketches the boys did will be completed and labels of the processes they observed - erosion, transportation, deposition - will be added along with other physical river features such as meanders, cliffs, beaches and even an ox-bow lake. Hopefully, they are all now river experts, so feel free to give them a test at home!
A huge thank you to the parents who volunteered to come along on the trip and help out. We really appreciate the support and, without this help, trips like this, with a high pupil to adult ratio, would be very difficult to organise. Thank you and I hope you had fun despite the conditions! KEW
Malawi Donations—thank you for your support !
As you will be aware, we asked all boys to help support a group of 100 orphan children in Malawi, who have the opportunity to attend primary school for the first time, by helping to supply them with stationery packs and wash bags.
Each form collected a range of items and the donations were fantastic!
All packs have now been collated and sent over to Hesketh House, ready to be collected and flown over to Africa next week. Thank you to all who so kindly donated for your generosity and support! GF
A Message from the Eco Committee
Energy can be saved in your home by assessing whether there is enough daylight in the room. Do you really need to switch the light on?
Our litter pickers have noticed that crisps are regularly being brought in to school. As a school, we want to promote healthy choices and therefore ask that crisps are not brought in for snacks.
Big Battery Hunt
The Big Battery Hunt is a nationwide programme to help educate and inspire young people to recycle more used batteries. Please send your unwanted batteries to school, where we will store them and then take them to our local supermarket for recycling. There are great prizes to be won for school including £3500 towards outdoor and garden equipment. SL

Mr Winstanley plays Water Polo for GB
Over last weekend, Mr Winstanley was in Romania, captaining the Senior Men's GB Water Polo Team which was competing in the European Qualifying Heat for the World Cup 2023.
The team performed very well against strong opposition from Romania, Germany, Ukraine and Malta but, unfortunately, didn't manage to qualify.
Nevertheless, it was an amazing experience for Mr Winstanley and one that he can share with all the boys and, hopefully, it will inspire more of them to take up water polo as Mr Winstanley started his own polo career at Bolton School.
Forgotten Kit
Just a reminder that if your son forgets any books, homework, sport, PE or swimming kit, etc., please do not make the journey to school to drop it off for him.
Having to explain to his teachers will help him to problem solve for himself and, we hope, not make the same mistake again! Rest assured, we shall always lend equipment to him to enable him to participate in his lessons.

Book early to avoid disappointment !
Yesterday, Year 4 travelled to Liverpool to hear the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at their annual school concert called “The Symphonic Time Machine”. We listened to lots of wonderful pieces of music that we have studied in lessons over the past term and also joined in, singing with “Back in Time for the End of the Song”, which was specially written for the concert.
All of the boys had a great time, loved seeing an orchestra right in front of their eyes and came away with lots of smiles. Many thanks to Mrs Critchley and Mrs Darbyshire for coming along with us.

News from the Park Road PA
Urban Outreach Easter Egg Collection
This week, we have received the following message from Urban Outreach and we would very much like to help them to provide Easter eggs for children living within the Bolton families which they regularly support.
In Friday’s assembly, we shall be talking to the boys about this and focusing on the idea of ‘The Bolton Power of One’ and inviting every boy and member of staff to bring an Easter egg into School next week. If we can manage to do this, we will have collected well over 200 eggs that we can deliver with pride to Urban Outreach before the end of term.
“We are writing to you to ask if you would consider holding an Easter egg collection at your school to give to another child in Bolton. Over the past 4 months (Nov-Feb), over 4000 children have been in households that have received food parcels through our Food Hub. That's over 1000 children each month. This Easter we would love to give each child in a household that receives food an Easter egg.
We would also love to supply those families we are working with through our support projects Easter eggs as well.
Here at Urban Outreach, we have this idea
the #BoltonPowerOfOne
1 person can do 1 thing to make a difference to 1 other person. Here we have a wonderful opportunity to get children to think about giving a gift that will bring joy to another child in their own town.
If this is something you would like to do as a school, we would be grateful for donations to be done before 31st March so we can start giving them out over the 2 following weeks. You can organise with us for these to be delivered to our Food Hub or arrange for one of our members of staff or volunteers to collect. We are grateful for anything that is donated and appreciate how many families are impacted by increased costs at the moment. We certainly don’t want to add pressure to anyone.
Thank you for considering collecting Easter Eggs on behalf of those we support here at Urban Outreach.”
If you are able to help us rise to this challenge and collect in excess of 200 Easter eggs for children less fortunate than our own, please send your donation into School with your son next week. Many, many thanks in anticipation of your support.

Skiing Success
More great skiing from Jasper Daniels in Year 4 in the Interschools Championships in Pila, Italy this week.
He won gold medals in both of his races (Slalom & Giant Slalom) as well as winning the Overall U10 trophy. He's now competing in the British Ski Academy Championships, also being held in Pila. Amazing achievements !
Headphones /Earphones
Miss Ormerod has asked if boys could remember that they will need to have their headphones/ earphones with them at all time whilst in school in the next few weeks.
U9 MUFC Football Festival
Well done to the seven boys from Year 4 who travelled to the Cliff Training Ground to take part in the MUFC Power Play Tournament last week.
Competing against schools from all across Manchester, the boys came up against some strong teams but managed to come away with some impressive wins and scoring some good team goals. A special treat for the boys was meeting Manchester United Goalkeeper, Tom Heaton, who stopped for a quick picture. TG
