From Mrs. Faulkner
I hope that you have all had a restful and enjoyable break with family. As ever, I am delighted to see the boys back in school this week and, whilst every term is busy and filled with fantastic events, this term is always particularly exciting with the visits to Patterdale to particularly look forward to.
Around all that excitement, there are also the usual end of year exams. Please note that the dates for those this year are:
Years 4 and 5 week commencing 13th May
Years 3 and 6 week commencing 20th May
At the end of last term, we said goodbye to Mrs Winstanley. She has asked me to pass on her thanks to you all for the many kind messages and the extremely generous and much appreciated Apple store voucher she received. As I wrote last term, Mrs Lisa Hunt has joined us this term to pick up the reins of Mrs Winstanley’s teaching. She will also be taking some of Miss Fletcher’s classes and is enjoying working with the boys, having started to get to know them before the break.
Before the Easter break, I was delighted to share the report from our recent ISI inspection. The inspectors were highly complimentary of all aspects of life in Park Road and the Boys’ Division, commenting on the high expectations and culture of mutual support, inclusivity and tolerance within the School. The inspectors were impressed with the good academic progress made by the boys and the excellent behaviour and attitude to learning shown by all pupils I was especially pleased that they recognised a ‘significant strength’ in our work to develop the students’ character through our extra-curricular provision and commitment to outdoor learning. If you haven’t had a chance to read the report, it can be viewed here.
Next week, we will mark Earth Day on Monday 22nd April. As part of our continued efforts on waste disposal and sustainability, we will be collecting standard nonrechargeable batteries for recycling all next week as part of the Duracell Big Battery Hunt. Please do send those old batteries you’ve been collecting for recycling in with your son next week and we will do it for you.

Achievements
Huge congratulations to Park Road’s phenomenal skier, Jasper, in Year 5 took part in the British Championships in Tignes recently, and achieved a brilliant end to a fantastic season for him, as he took first place in his first Giant Slalom race, followed by first place in his second Giant Slalom race, gaining the British Giant Slalom Champion title.
A small mistake in Slalom, and subsequent disqualification, unfortunately cost Jasper his slalom title, but luckily his Global Slalom performance was so high that it held him at 3rd overall for points, which meant he came away with three medals, two gold and a bronze, £50 prize money, a GB goodie bag and some GB earbuds!
This marked the end of Jasper’s 2023-2024 season and, having competed in 23 competitions across six countries, Jasper amazingly secured 21 first place finishes, a second and a sixth place. The season concluded with Jasper holding the following titles: National Schools English Indoor Champion, National Schools British Indoor Champion, GBR Series Indoor Overall Champion, English Indoor Champion, British Indoor Champion, Lowlands Indoor Champion (International), AngloScottish Alpine Champion, English Slalom Alpine Champion, English Overall Alpine Champion and British Giant Slalom Champion.

This season was Jasper’s last as an U10 competitor. When the next ski season opens, he will be at the bottom of the group, climbing the ladder as an U12 racer.
These achievements are absolutely amazing Park Road is very proud of you and all that you have achieved, Jasper well done !
We also had some fantastic news from the AJIS Art Competition, as Oscar from 5C received a Highly Commended certificate for his excellent flower drawing.
There were some wonderful submissions from across the school and the standard was very high well done, Oscar! JPM

Verse Speaking Final
On the last day of Spring term, our Verse Speaking finalists performed their poems in the annual Verse Speaking Competition. There was an excellent array of both performances and the poetry shared from all year groups and all boys had clearly worked hard to learn a poem off by heart, performing this to the audience of all pupils and staff.
The teachers scored the performances on boys’ knowledge of the poem; projection and clarity; fluency and expression and their overall performance.
The final winner was Ross McVay, 6B, for his amazing rendition of Strict by Michael Rosen. A short clip of this performance is available to see on Twitter.
Harlan Moore, 6C, finished in second place and CJ McDonald, 5B, in third.
In each year group, the winners were:
Y3 - Jason Gill Y4 - Sol Tagari Y5 - CJ McDonald
Well done to all boys in each year group for their efforts in learning and performing a poem in their English classes last half term. MLB

The 2024 Hulton Lecture is taking place on Tuesday 7th May, 5pm in the BD Great Hall. It is compulsory for all Year 6 boys to attend and other invited G&T pupils – invitations have been sent to those to whom this is relevant.
Last term, we took part in the annual DK ‘Ask an Ologist’ session with a mycologist, an archaeologist, a geologist and a meteorologist.
A total of 45 boys submitted 365 questions into a competition to see if their question could be answered by one of the ‘Ologists.
Ayaan C of 5B (Why are the tiny crystals sometimes worth more than big crystals?) and Henri L of 5C (What is the hardest part about learning about fungi and what they do ?) had their questions selected.
Henri’s question was then selected by Lynne Boddy, the mycologist, as her favourite question and so 5C has won a prize!
The prize is a special, one-off lesson with Mycologist Lynne, alongside a collection of 50 DK Eyewitness books for the class and school library.
Lynne is a Professor of Fungal Ecology and one of the founders of UK Fungus Day. She's now trying to start a World Fungus Day! She's dedicated more than half her life to the service and study of Mycology. She is the author of numerous books, including DK’s Humongous Fungus, and has appeared on television and radio to talk about everything fungi.

It was wonderful to hear boys at the start of their musical journey, right through to the more advanced players. All boys performed brilliantly and should be proud of all of their hard work.
The best individual performance was won by Year 6 pupil, Max Knight, on the drums. We will be able to hear Max perform again in the upcoming Spring Concert on Wednesday 24th April A full list of all of the winners can be found linked here
Many thanks to the music teachers and ensemble leaders who prepared the boys for their performances. HJO
Gardening Group
The Gardening Group has spent a busy lunchtime this week planting potato seeds and onions.
They learnt how to prepare the soil, how deep to dig and how to find the roots and shoots.
We found some mini beasts and talked about how they can be helpful to gardeners.
Of course, we all know now how important it is to care for the tools that we use. We made sure that they were all clean and ready to use again.
A great first day back after the break. SL
