I do hope that you all enjoyed a restful half term break, You may well have noticed that this newsletter comes to you slightly later in the week than usual, as we get back into the swing of a busy half term. Whilst the dates list on the newsletter is helpful, it is always worth a check of the calendar on Parent Portal to look a little further ahead as, whilst this is a very short half term, there really is a great deal happening. Whilst you are on Parent Portal, it would also be useful if you could have a quick check that the contact details we hold for you and medical details we hold for your son are up to date, this should, of course, be done as part of the Patterdale Hall trip consent process you have been asked to complete recently but is always worth a quick look.
Next week, we are very much looking forward to World Book Day on Thursday 7th March and you will have received details of our plans via email earlier this week and that is also included on the last page of this newsletter. Please don’t think that you need to rush out and buy a costume, with just a little creative though, it should be possible for your son to create an outfit that fits the brief, whilst not taking up too much time, though, of course, if you want to go to town on it, that’s fine too my costume will be entirely made of things I already have in the house.
The brief the boys have been given is to dress up as any book, character or topic from any genre of book for World Book Day. This could be their favourite non-fiction book all about fossils or space, a favourite poem or poet, their favourite fictional character from a story or maybe even their favourite object/theme from a story too.
This half term has a very musical focus, next week Year 4 is going to Liverpool to watch the Philharmonic Orchestra perform, we also have the Year 5 Concert next Wednesday evening and then later in the term we have the Music Festival. Boys are encouraged to take part in this if they play an instrument, whether they have lessons in our outside of school and I always look forward to hearing them play, whether it is that first tentative effort or an accomplished performance worthy of any stage watching the boys supporting and congratulating one another is fantastic. Do please encourage your son to be practising ahead of that.
Finally, good luck to our Hockey team who head off to Chester today for the North-West finals of the In2Hockey competition, also to our two quiz teams taking part in the Online Quiz Club Heat this morning and all of our enthusiastic chess players looking forward to a good day of competition in school tomorrow.
Please find linked here the schedule for extra curricular activities for this half term.
Details of their endeavours will be included in next week’s newsletter, which will return to its usual slot of Wednesday.

World Book Day—Thursday 7th March
Following our trip to the Octagon Theatre last year to watch ‘Around the World in Eighty Days', boys may spot some locations and themes from the book on World Book day this year to follow our theme of... ‘Around the World, on World Book Day!’.
To encourage our theme that reading can take you ‘around the world’ and to encourage reading recommendations amongst the boys, they are invited to dress up as any book, character or topic from any genre of book for World Book Day. This could be their favourite non-fiction book all about fossils or space, a favourite poem or poet, their favourite fictional character from a story or maybe even their favourite object/theme from a story too.
All boys are also asked to bring in a book of their choice from home on Thursday 7th March to share with their class and will responsible for looking after the book that they bring into school on that day.
As well as activities in classes, we have events planned for before and after the school day. It would be lovely to see lots of you at the end of the day at the Cake and Book Sale.
8am: Breakfast Club The PA will be setting up a special World Book Day Breakfast Club serving some tasty breakfast treats, £1.50 for a three items.
4pm: PA Cake Sale in the Dining Hall. Please support the PA by donating any cakes, cookie, biscuits etc by bringing these to the school office on Thursday 7th March in the morning. Please note that ALL ingredients must be listed. After school you are welcome to visit the dining room to purchase the cakes available.
4pm: Book Sale in the Dining Hall after school
As well as cakes, we will also be setting up a book sale in the dining hall. If you have any children’s books in good condition that are no longer used at home, please kindly donate them to this sale. Please bring these to school in the week beginning Monday 4th March labelled Book Sale. All money raised from this, will go towards new books to be purchased for the school library.
We look forward to celebrating World Book Day! MLB
