From Mr. King

What an amazing first half term! In all my years of teaching, I have never experienced such a busy, thriving environment. The range of opportunities which have been available to the boys are a testament to the hard work our team of staff puts in each and every day. I would like to thank all of our staff for their endeavours over a very busy seven weeks.

For some of our Year 6 boys and a few Year 5 boys, the term has not quite ended, as we head to York for three days and two nights next week. The boys will be treated to a range of experiences and activities including trips to York Minster, Jorvik Viking Centre, chocolate factories, Forbidden Corner and more. On 18th November, there will be a breakfast and presentation for the parents of boys who attended this trip so drop it in your calendar now!

The term is not quite over yet. On Friday afternoon, we will be heading to the Levels at Senior School for our annual House Cross Country fixture. We expect to see the boys show great determination, perseverance and, above all, great kindness and sportsmanship. The races will take place at 2.00pm for Years 3 and 4 and then at 2.30 pm for Years 5 and 6. Parents are welcome to spectate. When the races have finished, boys and staff will head back to Park Road to change and assemble in the Hall for the presentation of the House cups.

Parents are then invited back to Park Road, where our PA will be serving tea, coffee and homemade cakes in the Dining Room and there will also be the chance to snap up bargains at our (pre-loved) uniform sale. Parental access to school will be via West Street, the playground and the entrance adjacent to the Dining Room.

Please note that we currently have spare capacity on most of our coach routes. If your son does not currently travel to school on the coach, but you are considering this as an option, please contact the Finance Office directly for further information.

To round off the final newsletter of the half term, I would like to thank the staff, parents and children for welcoming me to the school. It has been a busy seven weeks but everybody has shown kindness and support and it has been a lot of fun! I wish everyone a lovely holiday and safe travels to those travelling near and far.

Charity Awareness

Thank you to George James in Year 6 who gave a really interesting and thought-provoking presentation in Wednesday’s assembly about this charity. More details can be found linked here : https://www.pmsf.org.uk/shinegreen

George will be at the windmill in Lytham to show support for this small charity, which is close to the heart of his family, as a friend has PMSF, a very rare condition where a segment of chromosome 22 is missing. All are welcome to join George and his family on Saturday 22nd from 5pm in Lytham to show support and learn more about the charity and the people it helps.

Catch of the Day !

After 40 minutes, the keep nets were inspected for the catches and the total weights of the catches compared. Dawud and Ethan were declared the winners of the inaugural Park Road Fishing Match and were duly awarded a trophy to keep until the next match. All boys received a medal for taking part in the course, their Level 1 certificates and some boys, who had really impressed over the six weeks, were given special prizes of their own rods

journey.

Well done to all of the boys who have participated with great enthusiasm and obvious enjoyment and to Justin and his team from Off The Scale Outdoor Education, Lostock who provided excellent tuition for us all. NJG and KEW

Saturday 22nd October is PMSF Awareness Day and famous landmarks around the country are being lit green to promote awareness of Phelan McDermid Syndrome. Angling Club concluded this week (for the time being until the evenings get lighter and warmer) with a fishing match between the boys. Each pair was allocated a ‘peg’ at random and they collected the equipment they needed – rods, nets, boxes, bait, disgorgers etc – and the fishing commenced. to keep and, hopefully, continue their fishing

Recycled Art Project

We have an exciting new project planned, to spice up the interior design of the Dining Room and get the boys at Park Road recycling more plastic.

We are hoping to recreate the Bolton School crest out of recycled bottle tops, to sit above the hot plates in the dinning room. Please could you collect as many bottle tops as possible, wash them and bring them in to school when you have a bag full. These can be any size or colour, and any that aren’t used will be sent away to be recycled after we have finished the project. When you are ready to send a batch of bottle tops in, please ask your son to give them to Mr Winstanley.

Eco Committee News

Last Friday, all of the Eco Committees from across the Foundation were invited to present an overview of their respective and collective work during the last year to the full Governing Body: work which culminated in three of the schools, including Park Road, being awarded a prestigious Eco Schools’ Green Flag.

Mrs Lowe and I took some of the boys over to the Riley Centre at lunchtime so that they could discuss what they had been up to with the various governors. The boys ably manned our display boards, chatting confidently and enthusiastically about the different projects and events, from bees to garden centre trips and planting potatoes, to picking up litter.

Ross and Aaron also ‘starred’ as they presented our PowerPoint slides showing great knowledge of the eco topics and a very mature and engaging presentational style! Well done to all of the boys involved who certainly did us proud and made a big impression on the governors. KEW

Following on from our Hello Yellow assembly last week, and in collaboration with our Eco work, all boys in school have been planting daffodils on the field banking just inside the railings parallel with Chorley New Road.

We hope that this will enhance our kerb appeal next spring, and for years to come, as well as providing insects with a colourful and inviting habitat.

Our plan is that every new boy joining school will be invited to plant a daffodil bulb in the autumn to add to this floral display over time. KEW

Mrs Lowe and the Gardening Group have been considering safety in our Quiet Area this week. Teaching the boys how to use tools appropriately has been very much a forethought. We have specific rules to ensure the safety of all when using them. After use, the tools are wiped clean to keep them in good condition and are then stored safely.

This week, we unanimously decided to rake up the fallen leaves, so that any trip hazards could be exposed. The group considered how the huge pile of leaves would be a great home for small animals and insects. Next week, we shall use our magnifying glasses to see if we can find any new inhabitants. SL

More congratulations go to Jasper Daniels (4A), who recently competed in The Scottish Indoor Skiing Championships, winning 1st place U10 and 5th place overall.

Jasper put down two incredible times and came away with 1st place U10 and 3rd place overall in the competition.

Well done, Jasper you are doing so well !

Theatre Trip to Manchester Demon Dentist

The boys thoroughly enjoyed the play at the Manchester Opera House, seeing all of the characters in the story brought to life and it was a pleasure to hear the boys knowing what was going to come next, particularly from all of the tricks and cunning plans from Miss Root, the evil dentist.

It was a brilliant play, enjoyed by all and a perfect time of year for the play too with Halloween round the corner! MLB

Lunchtime Piano Concert

Yesterday, we were lucky to have two of our visiting piano teachers performing the first of our lunchtime concerts.

Ms Chambers and Mrs Colgan played a range of duets, which were written by Ms Chambers.

ADT Trip to CreateEducation

Some pupils in Year 6 had a fantastic start to the week as they visited CreateEducation and 3D GBIRE, industry and educational additive manufacturing specialists.

This was an exciting morning, as we explored different materials and processes, all within additive manufacture and the potential industries that these are used in. This included everything from automotive/aerospace engineering, medical uses (including micro printing stents and Invisalign dental trays) and the gaming industry.

Our boys got the chance to use state of the art 3D scanning technology, scanning and creating digital versions of themselves that could have either been printed or placed into virtual environments to be animated or developed. The boys had a blast comparing prints from different machines, processes and materials, exploring the benefits of each for their desired purpose. A truly amazing morning!

Thank you to CreateEducation for helping us organise this. AW

News from the Art Room

The boys are not the only ones who are learning new skills at Park Road !

Last week, ADT staff from across the Primary Division were joined by expert potter, Dave Partington, fresh from making plates for chef James Martin, to deliver a smashing workshop on kiln operation and primary clay projects. Dave gave us some excellent advice on how to use our kiln safely, before taking us through a quick “pinch pot portrait” workshop which was great fun. JM
