School Primary Division Junior Boys’ School
From Mrs. Faulkner
The boys have certainly got into the swing of their new routines now and are busy enjoying the many opportunities available. Lunchtime and after-school activities are well attended and the boys have spoken enthusiastically about all that they are doing.

This week, all of the boys attended a special assembly in the Boys’ Division Great Hall, alongside the Junior Girls and Year 2 children from Beech House. During that assembly, we learnt much more about the importance of the fundraising we have recently undertaken to support the building of a school in Malawi and the impact that has had upon the many children we have already helped. This project will be a major focus for fundraising across the Foundation this year and I look forward to sharing those plans with you as they progress.
Whilst we are still settling into the current term, our minds in school also begin to turn to the year ahead and we are looking forward to our annual Open Morning on Saturday 7th October
Boys in Year 6 would usually take that opportunity to visit Senior School and parents should have received more specific details about that from the Boys’ Division registrar, Miss Fenton.
We do usually ask that all Year 5 boys are available to help at Park Road which may include acting as a tour guide, supporting a particular sporting, academic or musical activity. Letters will be sent out for that early next week, I thank you very much in advance for supporting us with that process.
I should like to remind you are invited to attend Mr Britton’s coffee and conversation morning from 8:30 to 11am tomorrow (Thursday 21st September) in the Leverhulme Suite at the Riley Centre.
If you would like to attend, please could I ask that you do not leave your car on the Beech House car park as it is required in the morning. Please park off site and enter via the main Senior School reception. I look forward to seeing many of you there.
Finally, it certainly seems this week as though Autumn has arrived, along with the very changeable weather it often brings. Please can I ask that your son brings a coat into school each day, as we do aim to get the boys out as much as possible at break times.

Congratulations to the 30 boys who travelled to Cheadle Hulme School last Friday to take part in the first football fixture of the year.
All boys played incredibly well with the A and B teams narrowly losing and the C team coming away with a convincing win. A special mention goes to the number of boys representing school for the first time.
We look forward to many more fixtures this year across a range of sports. Well done! TG
After School Rugby Club
Last week saw our first after-school rugby club at which we had a fantastic turnout.
The aim of the club is to continue to work on the skills we are developing at the lunchtime club and then further develop these into game situations. This is a contact session, so boys are asked to bring a gumshield so that we work effectively on tackle technique.
If your son is interested in this activity, please come and see me in 3A at break or lunchtime to register your interest. TP
If your son is a cricketer and would like to continue his sport all year round, Winter net sessions will be held at Sharples School in Bolton from Sunday 1st October.
Boys (and girls) from current Years 3 to 6 are all invited to join the sessions each Sunday from 11:00 to 12 midday.
The sessions are all free there is no cost at all!
Please register your son on the day when you arrive.
Pre-Loved Football Boots and Shin Pads
If you have any outgrown football boots (for use on grass or on Astro turf) or any old shin pads, we would be extremely grateful if you could donate them to us for use in school as spares. Thank you in advance for any donations. TG
Representing School at Fixtures
For those of you who are new to Park Road, we have many teams, including football, cricket, hockey, cross country, athletics, water polo, swimming and chess, for which your son may be selected. If selected to represent the School in a sporting event or chess competition, we will endeavour to give your son and you as much notice as possible about the fixture.
To enhance the possibility of selection, boys are encouraged to attend clubs held during lunch hours and after school on a regular basis. If your son misses lessons due to a school fixture, it is his responsibility to find out what work has been missed and to catch up accordingly. Please check the Calendar section of our weekly Newsletter for the most up-to-date list of events.
September Geography Mission
Nut-Free Snacks
We currently have a number of boys at Park Road with severe nut allergies, for whom exposure to nuts would be very harmful and therefore we must all work together to keep them safe.
Please could we remind you to send your son to school with only whole pieces of fruit or vegetables (an apple, orange, banana or pear, carrot etc) for his snack and ask that you do not send tubs or bags of fruit salad, berries and grapes etc. Please note all snacks should be healthy i.e. no crisps, chocolates or fizzy drinks.
Thank for your understanding and co-operation.
Important Reminder for all Coach Travellers
Please remind your son about the expectations of behaviour and conduct we expect on the School coaches.
Students should be sat down with seatbelts on as outlined in our Coach Usage Policy. We would like to remind you that all the coaches have CCTV and there are 2 videos in the policy that we ask all parents to view regarding fire procedures and other general information :https://www.boltonschool.org/our-community/parent-hub-key-information/transport
Parents should also remind boys about wearing seatbelts at all times and not playing on their iPads whilst on the coach. We would also like to remind you that you should email Mrs Iddon in the School Office if your son is NOT planning on taking his usual coach home on a particular day. Thank you for your support.
After School Angling Club
The new season of after school Angling Club got off to a great start this term with a beginners’ course for 12 Year 5 and Year 6 boys.
The boys are learning how to prepare their pitch, bait the fish, cast their whips and land their catches. They are also learning how to recognise and handle the different species of fish in the lake and that patience is a virtue!
The weather was kind last evening with the rain holding off and allowing all of the boys to catch something, with Andrew top of the pile with a personal haul of 10 perch! NJG/KEW
There is a great opportunity for adults and children to have their artwork shown in Bury Art Museum.
The Bury Open is a chance for all budding artists to submit their work for consideration and possibly be shown in the majestic surroundings of Bury Art Museum.
As someone who used to work there, Mr Minta has a lot of love for this building and hopes you will join him in supporting such a wonderful cultural asset on our doorstep.
There is a small fee for submission. All details can be found on the Bury Art Museum homepage. https://buryartmuseum.co.uk/OPEN-2023
You are very Welcome!
Since getting involved in the Manchester International Festival, by hosting a festival in his house back in 2019 and then being a co-creator of Looking Forward to Tomorrow in 2021, Mr Minta has been very lucky to join an amazing group of Greater Manchester residents to form the Factory Assembly, responsible for designing, planning and delivering The Welcome
The Welcome is a nine-day series of events (11th-19th November) to welcome the people of Manchester into Aviva Studios, the brand new arts and culture venue for Manchester, located behind the Museum of Science and Industry on the old site of Granada Studios.
Huge events, family friendly workshops and talks are all available for everyone to access and come and make Aviva studios theirs.
It would be wonderful if you and your son were able to attend some of the events, as there really is something for everyone and it looks set to be an amazing and immersive cultural experience. Please do let us know if you attend any of the events. JPM
Foundation Malawi Appeal
Some of you may recall buying stationery items and toiletries to fill a form box, others will have attended one of the Jump Xtreme events or donated outgrown uniform – all to help us support orphans at a school in Malawi and to help raise funds for the construction of a new school.
Yesterday, we welcomed Dave Armstrong and Cath Foxon (from Great Minds, Bright Futures) to school, both of whom have recently travelled to Malawi to move the projects forward. They spoke to Primary Division pupils about the joy of being able to provide an education, food and clothing for the orphaned children and they thanked Bolton School pupils for all their help and support. They even taught the pupils a Malawian song about feeling happy which the children sing everyday in their school. KEW
Big Battery Hunt
The Big Battery Hunt is a nationwide programme to help educate and inspire young people to recycle more used batteries. Please keep sending all of your unwanted batteries to school this year, where we will store them and then take them to our local supermarket for recycling. There are great prizes to be won for school, including £3500 towards outdoor and garden equipment. SL
Kidzone—Half Term
Winter Bugs and Illnesses
There are cases of Covid around School at present, although very small in number. As you will see in the NHS link below, the main triggers for thinking your son may have Covid, would be feeling unwell and having a high temperature, especially if those signs of being unwell are from the typical symptoms list.
As a general guide, he should try to stay at home and avoid contact with other people for 3 days if he is under 18 children and young people tend to be infectious to other people for less time than adults. A typical pattern of symptoms is often 2 or 3 days of feeling very unwell, followed by a couple of days feeling very tired. https:// www.nhs.uk/conditions/covid-19/covid-19-symptoms-and-what-to-do/. Another typical illness where we need to be careful to avoid spreading illness is norovirus. The most important message here is that your son must stay away for two days after the last time he was sick or had diarrhoea. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/norovirus/
