This week, teachers have been meeting online with parents to discuss the contents of the recently released reports and to see how boys have settled into the new academic year. We hope that these meetings have been useful, answering any questions you may have had, while also providing more information and context to our teachers. However, we recognise that sometimes more in-depth conversations are required. We would like to remind parents that our teachers are available throughout the year to meet parents to discuss any issues or concerns which arise. Keeping an open and positive home/school dialogue is an important aspect in ensuring the overall progression of our boys. Over the course of the year, there will be further opportunities for parents to engage with both teachers and the subject specialists.

We are delighted to announce that, as an end of term festive celebration, we will be taking the whole school to watch “Jack and the Beanstalk” at the Albert Halls in Bolton on Wednesday, December 14th. We plan to leave after lunch to be back in time for the end of the day. The trip has been funded by the generosity of our school’s Parent Association. We are sure that this will be a fun and rewarding experience for our boys and staff at the end of a very busy term. We would like to thank all of our parents, particularly the PA volunteers for their ongoing support.

This week sees the launch of our whole Foundation annual Hamper Challenge for Urban Outreach, the 10th year that we have supported the local charity that aims to deliver a hamper containing everything needed for a full Christmas dinner, dessert, sweet treats, toys and seasonal fun for the many families in need in the Bolton Area.

We have been tasked with collecting 2,500 chocolate selection boxes by Thursday 8th December. We would like to encourage every student across the Foundation, from Nursery to Sixth Form, to bring in at least one chocolate selection box as a gift from each pupil at Bolton School to a child in the area.

Please do what you can to support and thank you again to those who have already kindly donated.

Headphones / Earphones in School

Headphones/earphones are an essential piece of kit for school and are required every day.

They should not be an expensive brand and ideally should not be battery powered or have a Bluetooth connection to the school iPad.

More and more boys are turning up at school without them and , as a result, are unable to take part in the audio/visual element of lessons using the iPad. CDH

Urban Outreach would like to thank us all for contributing to the Harvest collection this year. They had their most generous harvest yet with 21.4 tonnes of food donated! This is the weight equivalent of 50 grand pianos and will feed over 1400 households (about a months’ worth of food parcels with current demand).

Thank you all so much for your involvement and generosity. It really has been an amazing school-wide effort to see the food come in at this scale.

Lost Property

All unnamed lost property left at the end of last half term was recycled locally. All named items were returned to their owners. It is essential that all children’s belongings are named so that lost property can be returned easily.

Unnamed clothes, bags etc which are found around school are placed in the lost property bin in the cloakroom area. Named items are returned to classes. Every half term we will empty out the lost property bin, displaying items on the small yard –giving parents a chance to claim back their items. Any unclaimed items left at the end of each half term are recycled locally. CDH

English Masterclasses

Recently, three of our Year 4 boys were lucky enough to attend an English Masterclass at Greenbank Preparatory School in Cheshire, accompanied by Mr Livesley.

The boys had lots of fun learning new writing techniques and working with other schools to challenge themselves. We are looking forward to sharing what we learnt with our classes.

Mrs Brisk took a group of boys to King’s School in Macclesfield last week to a similar event.

Today, Mr Porter has taken a group of boys to the Maths Masterclass, which school hosted at The Riley Centre.

York Presentation Assembly

On Friday last week, our Year 5 and Year 6 boys, who travelled to York over half term for a three day trip, presented an assembly to the school and their parents about the experience.

The boys shared some of their memories of the trip and we got to see photographs and videos. The boys presented well and the other boys in school, as well as parents and teachers, enjoyed hearing about their adventures. SK

Achievements

Congratulations go to William Brocklehurst, in Year 6, who has recently passed his Grade One piano with a high mark.

Well done, William.

Please do let us know of any endeavours which your son has achieved out of school. We would love to share this with the wider whole school Foundation.

Artist of the Week

Senior School Joint Production 2022 : The

This December, pupils in Years 10 to 13 will present an adaptation of The Great Gatsby in the Boys' Division Great Hall. It is 100 years since F. Scott Fitzgerald's character, Jay Gatsby, threw his lavish parties and we will be marking the occasion with a cabaret style show.

Set in post-war Paris and Jazz Age New York, the show provides The Lost Generation context of the novel's genesis and tells the tragic story of Gatsby, a self-made millionaire, focussing upon his pursuit of Daisy Buchanan, a wealthy young woman whom he loved in his youth. Nick Caraway, a Yale University graduate from the Midwest, is our guide through the show. Nick recounts the events of the fateful summer of 1922. The show runs from Wednesday 7th December to Saturday 10th December with a 7.30pm start each evening. The Great Hall will be transformed into the Roaring '20s. Guests are invited to dress to impress; era specific attire is encouraged.

Tickets are priced at £10 each and tables seat up to 10 guests. It is not necessary to fill a table; individual, small group and table bookings are all welcome. To make a booking please go to Shopfront: As you make your booking, please use 'Gatsby' as the reference and include the date you wish to attend + number of tickets you wish to reserve in the reason for payment box. If you have any questions about the processing of your booking, there is an enquiry button on the Shopfront page. Tickets should be collected on the door on the evening you come along to watch the show. All other enquires should be directed to Miss Lord at nrl@boltonschool.org. Show updates can be enjoyed via Twitter @_NaomiLord.

Great Gatsby

Congratulations to Noah Walmsley in Year 6 who created this original piece in response to the work of Chris Ofili. Well done ! JM

News from Old Park Road Boys

Rivington

As the petrichor set in over the moors, I inhale the recently moisturised air. A scene of layers with all its contours, Creates a place beyond compare.

Meandering rivers carrying fragments of rock, Depositing sediments to outside banks. Constantly flowing around the clock, The time has come to give our thanks.

Terraced gardens, a replica castle, Breath taking views and hidden gems.

Natural landscape that really does dazzle, Unspoilt, unscathed that no one condemns. So let us be proud of our wondrous outdoors And all that surrounds us nearby.

The petrichor set in over the moors, My home, my haven, I cry.

Forgotten Kit

Just a reminder that if your son forgets any books, homework, sport, PE or swimming kit, etc., please do not make the journey to school to drop it off forhim.

Having to explain to his teachers will help him to problem solve for himself and, we hope, not make the same mistake again!

Rest assured, we shall always lend equipment to him to enable him to participate in his lessons.

Year 6 Concert

Last Wednesday was the Year 6 concert, which was held in the Arts Centre.

We were treated to a large range of pieces on piano, guitar, saxophone, violin, drums and vocals. The evening culminated with the massed voices of Year 6 singing a Weather Medley.

All the boys performed brilliantly and should be very proud of their achievement. Many thanks to their individual music teachers for preparing them so well, it was a fantastic evening that was enjoyed by everyone. HJO

Christmas Dinner on Jesus Collection of Selection Boxes

Children in Need Day

Last week was Children In Need Day.

This festive season, we are once again joining with the whole Bolton School Foundation to support Urban Outreach and their Christmas Dinner on Jesus annual appeal, but we are not asking for money…

Urban Outreach provides hampers to struggling individuals and families containing everything they need to do a traditional Christmas Dinner – right down to mince pies and Christmas crackers!

For the last few years, helped by schools, churches and local businesses Urban Outreach has put together hampers and distributed them a couple of days before Christmas to families in Bolton who are having a hard time, for various reasons. These families are identified by contacts in local churches and other organisations. People from the church or organisation then collect the hampers and take them round to the families who they know are in need.

Urban Outreach asks schools, churches, local businesses and other organisations to pledge and collect Christmas food items to help us make this a reality for hundreds of families in Bolton, giving them a little bit of good news and hope at Christmas.

This year, we will be collecting selection boxes for the campaign. The Junior Boys target is 250 and we must meet our target by Wednesday 7th December. Up to today, we have had 40 donations. We ask that boys drop off selection boxes in the box in the bottom corridor if they are able to help.

If any parent has contacts whereby they can get extra boxes for us through work or other means then all donations will be gratefully received to help the whole Foundation achieve its target.

Thank you in anticipation of your support. CDH

The boys took part in a range of activities aimed at raising awareness of the charity. Our community managed to raise over £200 and we all had a lot of fun doing so.

Christmas Pudding Orders

If you would like to help raise funds for the GDPA, why not order a delicious luxury plum, sticky toffee or lemon pudding.

Please place your order on the link here. Order forms are downloadable on Parent Portal too.

After School Activities

If your son is unable to attend any of the after school activities that he signed up to, please could you ensure that you inform the activity provider in advance, if it is a school-run activity, or Mrs Iddon in the School Office, to let them know that he is unable to attend.

We have spent a lot of time recently chasing non attendees for after school activities which means time is reduced on them for all the other boys involved.

Thank you.
