This week, we are all very focused upon reading and are looking forward to hearing all about the boys’ favourite books and seeing their various costumes as we all prepare to celebrate World Book Day tomorrow. I have heard of lots of interesting ideas so far, including one young man who is planning to be the wardrobe from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe!

Behind all of the colour and costumes, there is, of course, the hugely important theme of the value of reading as that is perhaps the single most important thing that can be done to support boys’ learning across the curriculum.

Through books, the boys gain access to other worlds, whether those are imaginary or real and continue to develop their ever growing vocabulary. We are constantly striving to develop the boys’ engagement with reading and do understand that some boys find it more enjoyable than others, other times a usually very keen reader can just fancy a bit of a break and perhaps either stops reading or goes back to something you might consider to be ‘too easy’ for him.

This is all a part of how we develop as a reader, I know that there are points in time when I want to read something simple and choose a piece of children’s literature, or perhaps what some would consider a trashy novel, other times I’m ready for something a bit more involved to challenge my thinking. All forms of reading have their place and value, so please do continue to encourage your son to make those choices about his reading and perhaps model good reading behaviours at home too.

This week, we have announced a new group of Year 6 Monitors who are all keen to shoulder the many and varied responsibilities which come with those roles. I would like to thank those monitors who have served us very well indeed in the first half of the year, they will be invited to be the first boys enjoying ‘top table’ lunch on Friday.

Well done and thank you very much indeed everyone.

Well done to the two quiz teams who took part in the national online quiz last week. There were 285 teams from across the country, and it was a very high-scoring competition.

Team 2 came 41st overall and Team 1 came 26th. Team 1 progress to the semifinal next week.

Well done everyone, it was very close.

In2Hockey Final

On Friday 1st March, our hockey team travelled to the distant land of Chester to take part in a tournament with the North West's finest hockey teams. The boys played in three closely contested games and finished the tournament in 3rd place. A special mention must go to Rohan Chitre, who was given the Man of the Match award three times by the opposing team for his mesmerising midfield displays. MP

Achievements

Before half term, Oscar in Year 6 competed in the Lancashire County Swimming Championships, where he won a bronze medal in the 200m Butterfly.

Oscar is now training to compete in the North West Regional Competition in a couple of months. What a fantastic achievement, Oscar, good luck with your next challenge.

News from the Art Room

The sound of smashing plates and the Harry Lime theme filled the air as the Year 3 classrooms where turned into a Greek taverna for some food tasting this week.

Boys tried some new and familiar things, recording their thoughts on smell, texture and ultimate taste. I was really proud of the boys who tried something new even if they were a little unsure. Please feel free to blame me if your son requests feta, cheese, hummus and olives!

This week has seen the culmination of weeks of testing and planning by Year 6 as they installed their Andy Goldsworthy inspired sculptures in the Quiet Area. I was hugely impressed with the end results as well as the fantastic planning and teamwork shown. Self-directed and self led project work really allows the boys to take full ownership of their learning and builds key characteristics such as creativity, collaboration and communication. Well done, boys ! JPM

On Saturday 2nd March, our U11 and U9 chess teams took part in the EPSCA Chess Tournament at Park Road. Nine other schools, including the girls of Hesketh House, gave battle to become the champions and the boys of Bolton School rose to the challenge.

Our U9 team emerged victorious in first place, whilst the U11s finished a respectable 3rd in what was the toughest competition seen in many a year.

A huge well done do all the boys who took part ! PM

World Book Day—tomorrow—Thursday 7th March

Following our trip to the Octagon Theatre last year to watch ‘Around the World in Eighty Days', boys may spot some locations and themes from the book on World Book tomorrow to follow our theme of... ‘Around the World, on World Book Day!’.

To encourage our theme that reading can take you ‘around the world’ and to encourage reading recommendations amongst the boys, they are invited to dress up as any book, character or topic from any genre of book tomorrow for World Book Day. This could be their favourite non-fiction book all about fossils or space, a favourite poem or poet, their favourite fictional character from a story or maybe even their favourite object/theme from a story too.

All boys are also asked to bring in a book of their choice from home tomorrow, Thursday 7th March to share with their class and will responsible for looking after the book that they bring into school.

As well as activities in classes, we have events planned for before and after the school day.

It would be lovely to see lots of you at the end of the day at the Cake and Book Sale.

8am: Breakfast Club The PA will be setting up a special World Book Day Breakfast Club serving some tasty breakfast treats, £1.50 for a three items.

4pm: PA Cake Sale in the Dining Hall. Please support the PA by donating any cakes, cookie, biscuits etc by bringing these to the school office on Thursday 7th March in the morning. Please note that ALL ingredients must be listed. After school you are welcome to visit the dining room to purchase the cakes available.

4pm: Book Sale in the Dining Hall after school

As well as cakes, we will also be setting up a book sale in the dining hall. If you have any children’s books in good condition that are no longer used at home, please kindly donate them to this sale. Please bring these to school this week, labelled Book Sale.

A flyer with all the details of tomorrow’s activities is linked here and can be found on Parent Portal. All money raised will go towards new books to be purchased for the school library. We look forward to celebrating World Book Day tomorrow ! MLB
