World Book Day

Last Thursday, we celebrated World Book Day with a wide range of learning taking place in order to inspire children’s reading We started the day with an assembly; we had a book character parade, including the teachers, and we announced the winners of our CBBC competition (more details below).

During the day, we decorated our classroom doors with the theme of our favourite books and we joined Zoom calls with authors to learn more about how they get their ideas and write their stories.

In the afternoon, we had a Book Day quiz, where children had to research four topics in teams and then complete a Kahoot! The research they did then went on to generate questions for experts in dinosaurs, ancient Egypt, science and animals.

Later this term, we are hoping some of our questions are asked in a live zoom with these experts. Finally, children were treated to different teachers visiting their classes and reading a favourite story or extract from a favourite story.

Ultimately, the aim of World Book Day is to inspire children to read, by sharing their passions; seeing each other's interests in reading; finding out about a new book through a costume they see, a story that has been read to them or even a quiz question.

During the assembly at the start of the day, we discussed the rationale behind the day but more importantly the benefits of reading: improved academic outcomes, stronger vocabulary, wellbeing, greater empathy for others. I could go on, but I would encourage parents to sit down with their children and have a good read together…there really is nothing like a good book! SK

Science Masterclass

Last Wednesday I enjoyed taking Imran, Kian and Neel, all in Year 4, to Branwood Preparatory School, in Eccles, for a Science Masterclass!

The event covered a range of exciting experiments and challenges for the boys to work together to complete with pupils from other schools. This included making the tallest free-standing structure, making observations about candles, investigating custard and its properties, as well as making a balloon inflate by itself!

I was particularly impressed by the boys’ observations made and inquiry skills shown to push their learning even further. Well done to those three boys! MLB

Forgotten Kit

Just a reminder that if your son forgets any books, homework, sport, PE or swimming kit, etc., please do not make the journey to school to drop it off for him.

Having to explain to his teachers will help him to problem solve for himself and, we hope, not make the same mistake again! Rest assured, we shall always lend equipment to him to enable him to participate in his lessons.

Giving Report

During the 2021-22 academic year, the Bolton School Foundation raised just over £1.8m for bursary and hardship funding.

This exceptional total reveals the shared determination of supporters from across the school community to ensure Bolton School continues to act as a driver of social mobility in the local area, and we are honoured to have received such outstanding support from so many individuals during such a challenging and turbulent time for us all.

News from the Art Room

Over the rousing sounds of "Zadok the Priest", boys from across the School designed Coronation benches for King Charles.

This was part of a competition set by the Historic Royal Palaces to engage pupils with the history, traditions and symbolism associated with this historical event.

The boys produced some excellent designs and showed great teamwork. JM
