JANUARY 2023

A note from the Head…

Congratulations to all of the Year 6 girls who have survived the Senior Entrance Examination and certainly seemed in good spirits this morning, knowing it was out of the way! Interviews will take place next week, so there is still some focus and concentration needed, but generally our girls have excellent oracy skills, so I am sure these will go well.

Please could I remind you that general queries should be directed to the Hesketh House office juniorgirls@boltonschool.org.uk or 01204 434761.

Mobile Phones, Smart Watches and Valuables

We have noticed an increase in the number of mobile phones being brought in to school since Christmas, and also several girls seem to be wearing smart watches. Phones have to be handed in on arrival at school and collected at the end of the day; they cannot be accessed by the pupils during the day. We appreciate that children travelling on the coaches or those who walk home may need a phone, but most children do not need to bring one to school and we would discourage them from doing so

Smart watches, which have the ability to connect to phones and send and receive messages, should also not be accessible during the school day and therefore the girls should not wear these in school. More generally, we would ask that valuable or expensive items are not brought in to school. It is very upsetting for the girls if these are lost or damaged.

We would be grateful for your support in this.

The following girls have been elected as Form captains and Vice captains for this term:

Form Captain Vice Captain

3H Jessica Cramant Violet Keld

4B Gia Sharpe Aadhya Gokul

News from The School Council

The School Council spent time last term gathering feedback from across the school about things that the girls would like us to consider as developments going forward. They met with Mrs Laverick towards the end of term and some of their ideas are already in the process of being implemented. In particular, they were delighted to get the go ahead to ordersome large floor cushions for the library, which have arrived this week.

After School Activities

Please make sure that you inform us if your daughter is not going to be able to attend an after school activity that she has signed up for. We do take registers and it is important to know if someone is going to be missing.

Hesketh House Music Festival

Monday 13 February

Tuesday 14 February

We will be holding our annual Music Festival just prior to half term, with the piano classes on Monday 13 February and other instrumental and ensemble groups on Tuesday 14 February. Parents will be able to come in to watch the sessions their child is taking part in if they wish; we will confirm timings in the next couple of weeks, once we have a clearer picture of the numbers involved. Letters have been given out to interested girls this week, a copy can be found here.

External adjudicators will award certificates and placings in each category, and give individual feedback on all of the performances. We will be inviting the award winners in each category to perform in a Celebratory Concert on the evening of Wednesday 1 March. More details will be given nearer the time.

EPSCA Chess Competition Saturday 18 February, Park Road

We will be entering U9 and U11 teams in the National Primary Schools’ Chess Competition, with the first round being held at Park Road on Saturday 18 February. Letters will be sent out next week to those selected, but please note that this is the first weekend of the half-term holiday.

Birthday Treats

Some children like to bring in treats for their birthday to share with their class. Could we please remind you that anything sent in to school should be pre-packaged and clearly labelled with ingredients and allergens. These can then be distributed at the end of the day to be eaten at home, with parents’ permission.

Absences

Please ring us first thing in the morning if your daughter is going to be absent from School for any reason. The Hesketh House office number is 01204 434761.

We would also remind you that, in accordance with NHS advice, children should not be in School for 48 hours after any bout of sickness or diarrhoea in order to make sure that any bugs are not easily passed to others. We would very much appreciate your support with this.

Severe Weather Arrangements

A copy of the Severe Weather Arrangements can be found here. The key points are that information will be posted on the front page of the school website (www.boltonschool.org), usually by 7.00am, and we would be grateful if parents would use the website as the first port of call. You will also be sent an email, and news often first appears on School Twitter Accounts such as @Philip_Britton, @sfboltonschool, @BSPDJnrGirls.

SPORT REPORT

U12 Lacrosse v Harrogate Ladies’ College

Saturday 7 January

Congratulations to Taliah Dean, Hattie Drake, Jessica Shannon and Beau Strange, who were selected to play along the Year 7 girls in a match against Harrogate Ladies’ College last weekend. It is unusual for junior girls to be asked to play up at this level and therefore a good indication of their considerable skills and talents. I am also reliably informed that they scored the majority of goals in an excellent 17 – 2 win. Fantastic, well done girls!

Year 5 Netball v Birkenhead School

Thursday 19 January, 2.15pm Birkenhead

Good luck to the Year 5 netballers taking part in this fixture next week. We will let you know how they get on in our next Newsletter.
