HESKETH HOUSE NEWSLETTER 9 FEBRUARY 2024

A note from the Head… Our Music Festival has been a real highlight this week, with so many girls taking part. I thoroughly enjoyed all the performances, from our youngest girls just setting out on their musical journeys, to the older and more experienced musicians who are really starting to develop their skills.

Hesketh House Music Festival Monday 5 February Our pianists took to the stage on the opening day of our Music Festival, with some excellent performances in all classes. Our adjudicator, Mr Marc Murray, was impressed with both the standard of playing and the confidence of the girls. Well done to everyone who took part! The final session was probably my favourite, with all of the ensembles – there is something very special about coming together as a group to perform. Well done to everyone who took part and thank you to those parents who were able to join us.

Hesketh House Music Festival Tuesday 6 February

Mrs C Laverick

Tuesday’s Music Festival saw girls playing a range of instruments, in another wonderful day of music. Mr Philip Dewhurst was the adjudicator for these sessions and really enjoyed all of the performances, giving some very positive and useful feedback. Again, congratulations to all of our talented musicians!

A huge ‘thank you’ to Miss Fairclough for all her efforts in putting this event together and also to Mr Death for accompanying many of the instrumentalists. Top performers from all categories have been invited to take part in our Celebratory Concert on the evening of Thursday 7 March at 6.00pm in the Arts Centre. More details will be sent home next week. Please note that parking for this event will be available in the Dobson Road Quad or Upper Tudor Avenue Staff Car Park that evening.

Year 4 Roman Visitor Wednesday 7 February Audite! A Roman command meaning listen. Ohhhhh, look let’s consider that word, it’s linked to audience, audible, audio, audition… (spelling families). The study of words is called etymology and about 70% of the words we speak today come from Latin, the language the Romans used. As part of our Spring Term History study, Year 4 pupils became Roman recruits for the day. Having joined the ranks of the Roman Army, they were drilled to respond to commands and pay attention to detail from the Legionary Gaius - the Roman commander. The girls enthused as they learned new facts and practised new skills. A Roman artefacts handling session allowed them to work, as if archaeologists. They studied and sketched. In a creative session using clay, they moulded oil lamps and made a Roman board game, Tabla Lusarius which they were then able to play. All these experiences supported their curriculum work and helped the girls to immerse themselves learning about ancient times, life in Roman Britain over 2000 years ago and most importantly about the influences that those times continue to have on our lives today.

Collectively we will create a colourful array of characters!

HESKETH HOUSE NEWSLETTER 9 FEBRUARY 2024

In addition to dressing up, bring a book from home to school on World Book Day, to share with your friends and classmates. It might be a story book, a non-fiction title, a quiz book, poetry book or an annual or comic. Won’t it be fun to share your books with others? All we ask is that you take a bookmark template from your classroom (your teacher will have these), write your name and class on it and pop it inside your book from home so that it won’t get mislaid and can be safely returned to you at the end of the day. All girls will receive a £1 WBD voucher, which can be used to part purchase for any book at the Book Fair. A book costing £5 at the Book Fair will cost you £4 if you use your voucher. We will give you these vouchers before half term. The £1 vouchers can also be used in any bookstore to buy specially commissioned books written for World Book Day. Thank you to all the guests who attended and were so generous in the buying of raffle tickets; the sponsors who donated so much: Cowgills, Scan Computers, InoRail, Yew Tree Inn at Anglezarke, Quest Painting & Decorating Contractors; and all the parents who kindly donated items for the raffle hampers. Over £1,500 was raised for the Woodland Project, enabling school to plant at least 20 new trees in the Tudor Avenue area. This is a fantastic result and could not have been achieved without input from everybody listed.
