Bolton School Primary Division Junior Boys’ School Wednesday 29th June

Summer Term, 2022 — WEEK A

From Mr. Morris Dear Parents, During the last week, we have turned our attention to all things green in school.

Wednesday 29th June Youth Environment Summit, 9.30am –2.30pm, BWFC Swim Squad training, 4-5pm

Mrs Lowe and Mrs Winstanley accompanied a group of boys from the Eco-Committee to Ewood Park, Blackburn as they attended the North West Eco Schools’ Sustainability Conference, learning all about reducing waste and protecting our planet. We have followed this up with today’s trip to the Youth Environment Summit, and will hopefully return with some exciting new initiatives for the new school year. One of the highlights of the year has been seeing the engagement of the boys in ecomatters and witnessing, first-hand, their determination to right the mistakes of previous generations.

All classes have now experienced a glimpse of what September should look like as they enjoyed a day with their new classes earlier in the week. Hopefully, good first Year 6 Play—Jungle Book— impressions have been made and the boys are already excited about the next step of their journey. 7pm—GD Theatre

Cubs 6.30—7.45pm

Much like the Year 6 boys, I will be saying goodbye to Park Road at the end of this term. In my seven years here I have been very fortunate to receive gifts at the end of Thursday 30th June the Summer Term from some boys that I have taught. I have been hugely grateful for each card, gift or kind word along the way. Without wanting to sound demanding or Y3 Ancient Egyptians presumptuous in any way, I would like to ask that, if you had planned on buying me a Workshop, all day small gift this year, could you instead please redistribute those few pounds to a charity LAMDA, 4-5pm that I would love to lend some support to? The River Reeves Foundation was set up in the memory of five talented young men who lost their lives just as they were on the Jujitsu, 4-5pm brink of a bright future in the music industry. The charity helps to support talented but Cubs 6.30—7.45pm socially disadvantaged young people from across the region realise their dreams in the Year 6 Play—Jungle Book— arts world through grants, sponsorships and training programmes. 7pm—GD Theatre (https://www.riverreevesfoundation.org/get-involved/donate) Many thanks!

Friday 1st July LAMDA exams, all day Water polo training (by invitation), 4-5pm Year 6 Play—Jungle Book— 7pm—GD Theatre

Our Year 6 boys will be showcasing their own theatrical talents this week as they embark on their three night odyssey to the Indian jungle (the Girls’ Division Theatre) for their interpretation of the Jungle Book. Break a leg! FM

Many thanks to Mrs James in Senior Girls’ Division for giving Year 6 boys the experience to make some tasty ‘Sensational Samosas’ yesterday. One of the many brilliant PSHE Enterprise ideas, which will be on sale at the Year 6 production of “The Jungle Book” this week.

LAMDA Lessons from September Park Road is offering boys the opportunity to attend LAMDA classes each Thursday after school, commencing 15 September. These classes are organised by experienced Speech and Drama Teacher, Mrs Jayne Buchanan. Classes are fun, yet structured, and boys will be able to fulfil their potential. We will work on developing performance and communication skills and plan to take an exam during the school day towards to the end of the academic year. The classes will be £14.00 per week, payable at the beginning of each half term; this also covers the cost of the exam. If you would like your son to attend classes, please complete the form linked here and return directly to jaynebuchanan@hotmail.co.uk before Friday, 2 September. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please note that this arrangement, which the school is facilitating, is handled by me and if you would like any further information please contact me or take a look at LAMDA’s website www.lamda.ac.uk/examinations.

Eco Committee News STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! STOP PRESS! After almost a year’s hard work by Mrs Lowe and the Park Road Eco Committee, our Eco Schools’ Green Flag Award application has finally been submitted. All of the evidence of what we have been doing around school, both inside and outside the classroom, has been collated with help from lots of the staff, boys and partners across the wider Foundation. We are hoping that the judgement will be received back before we break for the summer so watch this space! If successful, we shall be able to fly the flag next year and then it will be up to all of us to continue the hard work and build on the foundations that have been laid this year. If any parents would like to get involved in our Eco work next year, we would love to hear from you so please do get in touch with us via the School Office. KEW and SL

NW Eco Schools Sustainability Conference Last Thursday, Mrs Lowe and I took eight members of our Eco Committee to the North West Eco Schools’ Sustainability Conference which was held at Ewood Park, Blackburn. The boys had a really enjoyable morning getting involved in all sorts of sustainability themed activities, with the favourite most definitely being a visit to the marine life/biodiversity stand, where they were able to hold all manner of sea creatures. Whilst the boys were kept busy with our hosts, Mrs Lowe and I were able to browse in the Marketplace and gather lots of ideas for new extra curricular initiatives for next year and activities that will enhance and refresh some of our existing clubs. After lunch, where we sat in the stand at Blackburn Rovers FC, we all went up to the Legends’ Lounge to watch the ‘Trashion Show’, featuring a collection of weird and wonderful garments all created from rubbish by local schools. There was a newspaper ra-ra skirt, a bottle top T-shirt and even a bubble wrap evening gown! After a final address from the organisers (and some fun with water pistols), it was time to return to school. The boys were unanimous about how much fun they had had and the fact that they wanted us to book again for next year! KEW

Youth Environment Summit Year 5 boys, Noah, Mark and Max, have had a wonderful and inspiring day at the Youth Environment Summit which took place at the BWFC football ground this morning. The boys enjoyed numerous workshops aimed at bringing a voice to young people in the fight against climate change and in support of our world becoming more environmentally friendly. SL

Achievements

If you were an engineer, what would you do? This question was posed to our Year 6 Challenge Group and they were tasked with solving a real-world problem by inventing a new product. Ziyad Bagasi came up with ‘Pram Power’ - a mechanism that would enable prams to move easily up and down stairs.

New After School Club from September Earlier today, the current Year 4 and Year 5 boys were treated to a presentation by Justin, from Off The Scale Outdoor Education, to introduce a new after school angling club, which will be taking place from September. More details to follow soon!

Ziyad was chosen as a Year 6 winner from a plethora of entries from the Greater Manchester area and will attend an awards ceremony at Rochdale Town hall next month where he will receive a trophy and certificate. Well done and many congratulations, Ziyad ! Congratulations to Vivaan Bhandary, in 3B, who won the “Players’ Player of the Season” award for FC Strikers Football Club. Well done, Vivaan !

Please do let us know if your son achieves great things outside of school over the Summer holiday; we would love to share his news and achievements in the newsletter when we return to Park Road in September.

Year 5 and Year 6 House Cricket Final The Year 5 and Year 6 House Cricket finals match will take place on the levels at Senior School on Friday 1st July, starting at 2.30pm and concluding by 4pm. Please return any forms to Margot directly to ensure your son’s place on the activity, as it is always very popular with the boys (and girls !) .

News from the Art Room The boys have been having great fun in their art lessons this week, constructing with Modroc ! It’s been messy, dusty and tricky but a great experience and exactly what the Art Room is perfect for ! JM

Instrumental Music Lessons from September If you wish your son to start individual music lessons from September, please apply directly to your chosen teacher using the information contained in the attached VMT brochure to check on vacancies. A copy is linked here and available to download on Parent Portal. If you have any questions, please contact the Foundation Head of Instrumental Studies, Mr Forgrieve - ikf@boltonschool.org.

5C had a cracking time preparing their parachute eggsperiment!

The boys constructed parachutes, changing one element only (size, shape, material) to test which design had the most air resistance. Apparently Mr Minta’s terrible Dad jokes really scrambled everybody’s brains but he thought they were smashing! JM
