Bolton School Primary Division Junior Boys’ School Wednesday 29th June
Summer Term, 2022 — WEEK A
From Mr. Morris Dear Parents,
BREAK UP FOR SUMMER HOLIDAY, 3.25pm
I hope you have enjoyed this afternoon’s Sports Day. The boys have literally and metaphorically crossed the finishing line now and deserve huge praise for their efforts throughout the year. Fittingly, our Year 6 boys left the assembly this morning to a standing ovation. They have been a great year group and each one of them will be missed at Park Road. We also said fond farewells to Mr Franklin, Mrs Whittaker, Mrs Fairclough, Mrs Crowther, Mrs Sykes and me. Each person has contributed to the success and development of the boys during the past few years and we wish each of them all the very best in the future. On a personal note, many thanks for all of the kind words, e-mails, gifts and charity contributions. I have enjoyed my seven years here and will take away some wonderful memories of the people that I have met along the way.
Monday 5th September STAFF INSET DAY
I hope that you all have a relaxing break and wish you, and your sons, every future happiness. Best wishes, Mr Morris

After School Angling Club, Fall Birch, collection at 5pm Y3& Y4 Curriculum Evening for parents, 7pm,
We organised over ten PA events this year: five Breakfast Clubs, two BagtoSchool collections, a Book Fair, cake and uniform sale and a hugely successful Christmas raffle. We are delighted to say that this allowed us to make several purchases for the boys, including wet weather games for every form, litter pickers, Gardening Club items, new football kits, Year 6 hoodies, Jubilee mugs and a commemorative Jubilee outdoor clock (look out for this in September!). A special mention goes to Mr Morris, Mrs Winstanley and Mrs Iddon for always staying behind after school to attend all our PA meetings and to also ensure our events ran smoothly. Looking to the future, we do have a number of Year 6 parents who are regular volunteers but as they leave, we are hoping these roles can be filled to ensure PA events continue in the same vein from September. Please do look out for PA emails on which roles need fulfilling. Pre-loved Uniform: if you have any good quality pre-loved uniform or sports kit, please consider donating them for a uniform sale in September. Donations can be dropped at Reception (at the Riley Centre) during the school holidays. They will be open on weekdays from 10am – 4pm. Please label donations as “Park Road Uniform Donation” so that it makes its way back to us. EasyFunding: online shopping can also generate funds for the school PA by simply using the easyfundraising app and linking your account to https://www.easyfundraising.org.uk/causes/ boltonjbpa. This includes the majority of online merchants (e.g. Amazon, M&S, John Lewis, eBay, Domino’s Pizza, insurance). Hope you all enjoy the summer and don’t forget to follow us on Twitter @BSPDJnrBoysPA

The Lost Words The boys have all enjoyed an outdoor interactive theatre production this week, The Lost Words: Told in Gold came alive in the Senior School grounds and took place in and around a huge goldfinch nest dome, with School’s beautiful woodland as the backdrop.
Eco Committee News Fantastic news! Just this week, we have learned that Park Road has been awarded Eco Schools’ Green Flag status with Distinction which is the highest level we could have been awarded. Mrs Lowe and the Eco Committee deserve huge credit for achieving this and it reflects all the hard work that has gone on throughout the year. However, we wouldn’t have been successful if we hadn’t had full support from right across the Park Road family - parents, pupils, PA, staff and governors - so thank you to you all and look out for our Green flag flying proudly at school next year! SL and KEW
After lots and lots of litter picking from Rochdale to Mawdesley and Culcheth to Preston, literally hundreds of bags of rubbish have been collected from the streets, paths, parks and hedgerows of our catchment area, demonstrating that together we truly can make a difference. Thank you to all the boys who pledged to litter pick, brought home a picker and got cracking, providing me with evidence of their activity week after week. It really was most impressive. After careful consideration, I have selected Zain Atcha in Year 6 as the winner of this year’s Earthshot trophy which was awarded in Prize Giving this morning. Zain stood out, not only for the sheer amount of litter picked, but also for his conscientious approach to documenting his evidence. Well done, Zain! I hope you display your trophy with pride this year and continue your litter picking habit for many years to come. All boys who have a litter picker should keep it over the summer and endeavour to keep it busy. I would love to see evidence of their activity building up over the summer. KEW
Geography Monthly Mission At the start of the week, Miss Gillibrand from Senior Boys’ Division attended our celebration assembly to present prizes to the winners of the latest Geography Mission. Congratulations to the overall winner, Kian Patel in Y3. There is a new challenge for boys over the summer holidays which is linked here and is also in Showbie Park Road Whole School/Geography Competitions.
Boys should upload an image of their finished project by the first day of the new term (Wednesday 7th September) to be included in the judging and should keep their project to bring into School if they are a winner. KEW

Summer Holiday Activity— Singing for Pleasure—Singing Week We have recently been sent details of ‘Singing for Pl easur e’s S ing ing We ek’ in Trafford which may be of interest to some of our choirboys. We have certainly seen plenty of evidence during the year through concerts, assemblies and, most recently the Year 6 production of “The Jungle Book”, that many of the boys simply love to sing. Further details and how to book a place can be found on the link below: https://singforpleasure.org.uk/product/childrens-singing-week-trafford/ If your son does attend during the summer, I would love to hear about it and receive any photos that you might have. Review of the Year 6 Play—The Jungle Book—by Mrs Linas Deep in the heart of the jungle (otherwise known as the Girls’ Division Theatre), a pack of wolves raise a beloved man-cub named Mowgli, until Shere Khan, the ruthless tiger decides that the boy is no longer welcome in the jungle. Here begins the musical and visual delight of Year 6’s interpretation of the Rudyard Kipling inspired Disney stage production. It begins with the talented musicians of the Jungle Book Band pianist (Harry Farrington), trumpeter (Mateo Sprott) and drummers (Joe Duckworth and Ewan McCairn), all immaculately attired in their big band suits. Bagheera, the loyal panther, (played by Harry Roach) and Baloo the bear (Daniel Linas), introduce the audience to the jungle animals, who then delight us with a mesmerising melody about the strange and marvellous story set under the skies of blue, in which we are going to follow Mowgli along his journey to safety. The stage is indeed set with magnificent scenery, transporting the audience to the Indian jungle with its sights, sounds and beautiful colours. The fearsome hunters with their pointed spears, the tropical birds flying around the stage in their vibrant rainbow coloured feathers, joined by the elephants, monkeys, wildcats, wolves and vultures. We also meet our humans; the hunters and the shy child from the village, Shanti. Mowgli (endearingly played by Abbas Khambalia ) does not believe that the jungle is unsafe until he encounters the slithering snake Kaa (sizzingly played by Aryan Nunkoo ) and the five coils of his slippery body, dressed in costumes of bright green and adorned with cleverly painted faces. Kaa tells Mowgli that he won’t hurt him, but instead wants to give him a big hug, but we all know that really means from a boa constrictor! Kaa and his coils dance sinisterly around Mowgli, drawing him in and trying to hypnotise him to sleep with a haunting tune, expertly sung and enticing the audience to also slip into the silver slumber. Rescue comes in the guise of Shanti (beautifully sung by Suhayb Pal and, on Friday night, by Tejas Neelam, gallantly standing in with only a few hours’ notice). Shanti is a child from the Man Village who is secretly watching all that goes on, Bagheera is alerted and Mowgli is safe …. for now. Enter the elephants, marching with a hup, two, three four, complete with flapping ears and large trunks and led by Colonel Hathi (the militarily inspired Amir Gani). Mowgli tries to join but no man cub is welcome in the herd, so Bagheera continues his journey to the Man Village. Baloo the Bear, larger than life (humorously and joyfully played by Daniel Linas), strolls onto the stage and introduces us to the Bear Necessities. Mowgli is entranced by Baloo’s loveable and carefree attitude, as is the audience, who swayed in their seats to the memorable tune, enjoying the antics and the atmosphere. The magic of their wonderful jungle home is then broken by innocent Mowgli being suddenly kidnapped by the grinning monkeys, to be taken to their leader, King Louis (a primal and exuberant Seb Smethurst), King of the Swingers, the Jungle VIP. What followed was nothing short of a magnificent performance of “I wanna be like you”, sung by King Louie; swaggering and waving his orangutan arms, dominating the stage. He tells the audience he wants to be a man, not an ape and to learn the secrets to make his dream come true.
To the rescue comes the safe, calm hero Bagheera (the talented Harry Roach), whilst Baloo hatches a plot to distract the monkeys. Baloo, wearing a grass skirt, bursts in and joins the dance, culminating in a bouncing sing-off between himself and King Louie. The energy, spirit, fun and charisma between the two characters had the audience enthralled, clapping and dancing in their seats. Baloo’s disguise falls off and he makes a run for it with the monkeys in hot pursuit, until Shere Khan (powerfully played as a ruthless villain by Ethan Jones) makes his strength and terror known. Baloo accepts the jungle is not safe for Mowgli, but Mowgli overhears him speaking with Bagheera and dejected, runs away. An emotional rendition of “That’s what friends are for” sung by the whole cast inspires the jungle animals to rise against the evil tiger and capture him so he can no longer intimidate them and banish Mowgli away from his home. Shanti reveals herself to Mowgli and he decides it is time to see if his future is in the Man Village. He goes with Shanti and her family to his new destiny. The lyrics of “That’s what friends are for” are very poignant for the class of 2022, their families and school staff who have all endured the disruption and emotion of the Covid pandemic. The end of an era of primary school, the new exciting but daunting adventures ahead, leaving behind the safe, secure and wonderful haven of Park Road. “When you’re alone, who comes around to pick you up, when you are down? And when you’re outside looking in, who’s there to open the door? That’s what friends are for. And when you’re lost, in dire need, who’s at your side, at your side, at lightning speed? So, you can see, we’re friends indeed and friends indeed help friends in need. We’ll keep you safe in the jungle for ever more”. The lasting friendships, the camaraderie, the fun, laughter, support and pleasure in rising to the challenge gave this end of Year 6 production the zing, zest and bare necessities to make it a resounding smash hit and Year 6, “I wanna be like you”, a fantastic group of stars reaching for a bright future. Let’s also not forget that there would no inspiring production if it wasn’t for the magnificent efforts of the production team, led by the Year 6 teachers Mrs Brisk, Mrs Whittaker, Miss Fletcher and Mrs Gould. Thank you all and to Mrs Toner and Miss Ormerod for their musical support, to Mrs Finlow and Mrs Chambers for their work with the Jungle Book Band, to Mr Kyle for the lighting and creation of the set, to Mr Deakin and Mrs Whittaker for the sound. Thanks also go to Miss Fletcher, Mr Winstanley, Miss Cox, Miss Rawat, Mr Minta and Year 6 for their designing and making of the sets and costumes, to Mrs James and Mr Winstanley for Y6 enterprise support, to parents Mrs Humphreys and Mrs Wyatt for their support with costume making, and to Mr Hough, Libby Hough and Y12 volunteers for the make-up.
