Y3 Commonwealth Hockey Festival

Triangular Athletics

An excellent afternoon of hockey took place earlier this week, with most of the children new to the game. They quickly developed a range of skills and then thoroughly enjoyed getting stuck into a series of short games against a range of opposition. As teams of only Year 3 pupils coming up against predominantly Year 4 children, our boys and girls played very well and never gave up. A thoroughly enjoyable experience and fantastic to see everyone coming together and enjoying an afternoon of sport. SAF

Well done to boys from Years 5 and 6 who competed in the historic Tri-Athletics competition held at The King’s School in Chester last week. After some exceptional individual and team performances, we finished closely behind Chester and Birkenhead. Very well done to all of the boys involved. TG

UK Junior Maths Congratulations to Ryan and Ibrahim (gold), the two Georges (silver) and Taran and Dhruv (bronze) who all performed extremely well in the recent UK Junior Maths Challenge. The boys were selected by NWGT following attendance at various maths challenges throughout the year and they certainly didn’t disappoint in a challenge which included able pupils from Years 5,6,7 and 8 from schools across the UK. Special mention goes to Ryan who excelled and is now through to the Junior Kangaroo which will take place in London later this term. KEW

Friends of Bolton School We are relaunching the Friends of Bolton School (FOBS) Choir with a “Come and Sing” event on Sunday 25th September. This will be held in the Girls’ Division Great Hall. If you are not already on the FOBS Choir mailing list, please email Friends@boltonschool.org to register your interest and to be kept informed of this and subsequent events. The choir is open to all parents, staff, ex-parents, governors, alumni and others with a connection to Bolton School. Further details will follow in due course.

Year 6—Young Voices Concert All the details for tonight’s much anticipated Year 6 trip to the AO Arena to perform at the Young Voices concert have been emailed to parents. Please note that the boys will eat lunch before they leave Park Road to travel to the Arena with accompanying staff, where they will rehearse all afternoon. The concert will begin at 7pm and collection is from the venue as per the email. Tickets have been handed out to the boys, so please frisk your son as replacements cannot be issued.

Mrs Iddon’s Charity Walk On Saturday 28th May, Mrs Iddon, whom you all know from the School Office, will be undertaking the mammoth challenge that is the Three Peaks of Saddleworth - a 7.5 mile hike, to raise much needed funds for a small local charity, ABCD—After Breast Cancer Diagnosis.

Please take a look at her JustGiving page and if you are able to sponsor her, she would be extremely grateful : https://www.justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/kate-iddon? utm_id=2&utm_term=RXej3br49

Many thanks to those who have so kindly and generously donated so far.

Before we break up for half term, there will be a new form uploaded to the Whole School Showbie class in the Generation Earthshot folder. This will be asking boys to record the dates of collections, note how many bags or weight of litter collected and whether they were able to sort out recyclable items from the litter and put them into their own recycling bins at home. Boys will, of course, be encouraged to do this with parental supervision and support.

Hopefully, lots of boys will continue to participate in this initiative with enthusiasm as we shall be choosing an Earthshot prize winner towards the end of the term and, very importantly, all of the evidence collected will help towards our Eco Schools Green Flag Award application. Huge thanks to everyone who is supporting this project. KEW

Star Litter Picker of the Week This week’s Star Pickers are Jack and his younger brother who are part of The Wilkinson Litter Busters and who have been hard at work collecting lots of rubbish left lying around at Deane Clough, BL3. The boys’ photos have been uploaded to the Picker Plotter.

Star Picker status also goes to another Jack (Yates, this time) who regularly picks at Shaw Hill Meadow, PR6. Well done, boys !

Eco Committee News Last Friday, our Eco Committee walked over to the Arts Centre to meet Bolton School’s Eco Governor, George Apsion. The boys had prepared thoroughly for their meeting and acquitted themselves well, sharing their achievements to date with George, asking interesting and thoughtful questions about why governors are interested in sustainability and why George was keen to meet them. The boys led the discussions impressively and their enthusiasm and commitment was there for all to see. This meeting builds on the recent meeting that the Committee had with Ian Clarke, Head of Estates, and provides additional evidence of the work they are doing and their engagement with the wider school community which will be vital when Park Road submits its Eco Schools’ Green Flag Award application later this term. Well done, boys, we were very proud of you! KEW

May’s Geography Mission Thank you to the boys who have already submitted photos in this month’s Geography Mission. This month, the quest is to find the best examples of human geography and Miss Gillibrand, from Boys’ Division, will be coming down to an assembly at Park Road to present prizes after half term. All entries should be uploaded to the Whole School Showbie class in the Geography Competitions folder. Full details are linked here and on the image opposite. KEW

Miss Cox’s Comic Competition Calling all comic book fans! Are you the next Dav Pilkey or Stan Lee? Go to the library to take part in Miss Cox’s comic competition! Take a blank comic strip and create your very own comic! All entries to be handed in to Miss Cox in the Library by Monday 6th June. Entries will be judged and displayed in school. Prizes to be won! Y3 & Y4 Concert Information Please find linked here letters concerning the forthcoming Year 3 and Year 4 concerts. Please note that both events are compulsory.

“Hunting the Higgs”

If you wish to cease individual music lessons, you must write to your son’s instrumental teacher and comply with the terms of the notice stipulated in your contract with the teacher. For boys in Year 6 : if you wish to start individual music lessons in the Senior School, it is important to complete and return the appropriate section of the Senior School Joining Information pack, and return the forms to the Senior School. It will be assumed that anybody currently learning in Year 6 will automatically continue lessons in Year 7, unless you withdraw from lessons, by writing directly to your son’s teacher to comply with the terns of the notice stipulated in your contract with the teachers.

Year 5 and Year 6 boys joined with Hesketh House in the Girls’ Division Theatre for an exciting and entertaining science show called “Hunting the Higgs” last week. It was all about particle physics and the Higgs boson. Everyone learned that the Higgs boson is the fundamental particle associated with the Higgs field, a field that gives mass to other fundamental particles such as electrons and quarks. We discovered that a particle’s mass determines how much it resists changing its speed or position when it encounters a force and that not all fundamental particles have mass. The boys and girls enjoyed throwing things, catching things and watching for changes, learning about scientific experimental methods and physics. The show finished with a Big Bang involving sublimated dry ice. CDH

News from the Art Room Year 6 completed their end of unit pieces looking at photographic abstraction. They used an online poster generator to produce their work at large scale after using a range of apps to abstract their original photographs. Great work, boys ! JM
