BUilding better BUILDING engineers GUIDE TO MEMBER BENEFITS OWNERS BROCHURE THIRD QUARTER 2016
Serving Your Building Technical Professionals Today The BOMA Technical Organization or BTO serves the real estate industry’s technical professionals and building engineers as part of BOMA Georgia’s larger mission to enhance the professionalism and value of members through education, advocacy, community involvement, membership participation and the open exchange of ideas. The needs of this industry segment are diverse and lean heavily toward operations. That is not to say that these integral members of the building management team are not required to be knowledgeable in the areas of management, safety, efficiency, customer service, technology, budgeting and other asset enhancing practices. In this update for building owners and asset managers, we will highlight some of the ongoing and planned initiatives BOMA Georgia uses to improve one of the building’s key assets. IN PRINT Starting with recognition, BOMA Georgia’s magazine Insight, the Commercial Real Estate Journal features one article in each
quarter of the magazine devoted to the interest and needs of building engineers and technical professionals. The most recent issue featured an article promoting the importance of volunteerism. This included serving in the workplace, the BOMA association and other industry opportunities like legislative advocacy. Click here. ON Video The article was accompanied by a short video interview with Highwoods Chief Engineer Mark Gallman, SMA, SMT, LEED GA. You can see that, here.
programs include curriculum on a range of subjects from basic trade skills, communication, risk management and business basics to highly technical studies of Commercial HVAC concepts. BETTER TOGETHER In addition to print, video and formal training, building engineers can further enhance their career by learning from one another. The BTO’s annual safety seminars, BTO lunches and BTO Breakfast are focused on bringing technical professionals together to discuss ideas with peers and subject matter experts.
IN THE CLASSROOM BOMA Georgia trains and educates the next generation of engineers through certificate programs like the Building Engineering 101 (BE 101) course and the Commercial HVAC Certificate Program. These
Future Opportunities for Building Engineers GETTING STRATEGIC In 2016, BOMA Georgia announced that one of its strategic priorities would be to develop a plan to address the education, career path, and BOMA engagement needs of building engineers and heighten the awareness of their importance in real estate. BOMA Georgia assembled a Building Engineering Task Force to study and recommend a plan to address these needs. The task force will release its findings during the fourth quarter. KEEP IT GOING In addition to this new strategic focus, the BOMA Technical Organization (BTO) committee will continue
to focus on providing industry driven and engineer demanded education in 2017 with four BTO lunches, the BTO Breakfast and two seminars. These initiatives, coupled with the direction set by the Building Engineering Task Force will propel the building engineering field and real estate industry forward.
this program that include the competency to create and apply sustainable initiatives, optimize current and future high-performance building operations, and maximize costsavings and environmental stewardship.
NEW IN 2016! In addition to this new strategic focus, the BOMA Technical Organization (BTO) committee will continue to focus on providing industry-driven and practitioner-demanded education in 2017 with four BTO lunches, the BTO Breakfast and two seminars. Engineers are ideally suited to deliver the outcomes of
Boosting the Education Budget of Engineers One of the most significant disruptions in building engineer education has come from the BOMA Georgia Foundation. Now in its third year, the Foundation advances real estate education and has awarded over 100 scholarships and produced two research studies and one white paper. Perhaps nowhere is the education impact felt more greatly than in BOMA’s educational offerings to engineers. With embedded scholarships of $500 to all students of BOMA Georgia’s in-person SMA® and SMT® designation courses, engineers are
boosting their education budget and taking more of these BOMI classes in an effort to earn their designation and enhance their value. Many new engineers are enrolling in the program, and these courses have featured record attendance. In a surprising announcement, the Foundation also embedded $500 scholarships to any student enrolled in any of the three courses offered in the aforementioned BOMI High-Performance Sustainable Buildings Designation Program. This embedded scholarship, plus BOMA Georgia offering all three
courses in 2017 means that conceivably both building technical and property management professionals alike will be able to pursue and attain the new BOMI-HP® designation in just one year. In addition to embedded scholarships, students can still apply for scholarships in other engineer training programs like the Building Engineering 101 and Commercial HVAC program. The application for Foundation scholarships can be downloaded and completed online at www.BOMAGeorgiaFoundation.org.
