Bye-bye my friends ... until next month Hello Everyone, July went by so fast and I was going to mention football and the Euro championships but I am not! I am also not going to that frozen food shop again, which has a certain country for its name! Anyway, on a positive note passenger arrivals at Alicante airport are 18% up on the same period as last year; building construction was also 80 times greater than in 2014, mostly due to foreign investment so despite Brexit things are getting back to what they once were albeit slowly. Lou won’t give me enough space to have a rant at the England football teams performance! Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 48

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: RUBISH BINS We have been back in Gran Alacant now for a few weeks and are disappointed to see that on numerous days the rubbish bins are overflowing and several bags just dumped beside them, as there is no more space inside! We also see that most of the recycling bins are in a similar state. We are all 'trying to do our bit' by recycling as much as we can, but the bins no longer seem to have any signs on them (except the glass one) to show what should go in which bin. Is it possible to arrange for some signs/ stickers to be put on or near the bins to remind us what we can put in which bin? Would be good to have pictures, i.e tin, carton, plastic bottle etc., so we can all understand! Maybe in some areas an additional bin or collection could be arranged? I'm sure there are many people like us that are getting very frustrated with the amount of rubbish that seems to be accumulating and it is not yet the height of summer. Hope you are able to help. Regards Mandy & Bob Town Hall Answer: First of all, the rubbish removal is a very complex problem due to the summer and its increasing population. It is true that sometimes we can
see amounts of rubbish nearby the bins, but this represents, as it has been stated in previous times, a lack of citizen’s education. Thus, your proposal of putting stickers on or near the bins seems to us such a good idea, and it is going to be considered by our technical services and the enterprise in charge of the removal of the rubbish. Q: TELEPHONE ANTENNA Hello Lou & Ged, Today I picked up the latest edition of your magazine and was of course very interested to see if I could find any answer from the Town Hall. Sorry to say I was very disappointed, when there was no answerer in this edition either!! For many others and me this is a very serious problem here in Gran Alacant, and if at first must occur a very grave accident before the politicians understand the situation, then I will be very upset. One very odd thing is that lot of people are complaining over the bad mobile connections, but do not take any action to do something about it. Perhaps some sort of a roll call could be a good idea?? Kind Regards, Nils
which are able to solve this problem are private enterprises, so the public Administration has no way to solve this by itself. However, after the first comment that you transferred to me (it was a few months ago), I talked to the Mayoress and to the Infrastructure Councilor, Yolanda and Paco, and they have talked several times with a few companies that work at this field. Thus, due to that there are still conversations between the Town Hall and those companies, I cannnot explain in detail all the measures which are going to be taken in order to solve this hot issue. Nevertheless, I am authorised to explain that several actions are going to be taken in order to improve, both mobile and TV and internet signals in Gran Alacant as well as at the East of Santa Pola. We are aware about your concerns and we have been working at this problem since last March. We also know that the lack of coverage is not a recent problem, and, as in every aspect of municipal
Town Hall Answer: Related to the lack of coverage, the first thing that we have to deal with is the fact that the companies

would take the risks of building without licenses, but in my experience, there are a lot of situations like this one, and the Town Hall has the duty to protect the general interest of people living in Santa Pola (and of course in Gran Alacant).
administration, the harder the problem, the longer it takes to get a proper solution. Thus, the Town Hall encourages all the people living in Gran Alacant to have a little patience and wait to the next edition so as all the explanations can be given and the solutions can be shown. Hello Lou &Ged Outside of El Faro there is already an antenna for mobiles, used by police. On this antenna there is a space for many more antennas. I have lived for 16 years in El Faro without the possibility to use my mobile. Kind Regards, Helge Town Hall Answer: The antenna which is at Service of Police Department is not available for any other uses rather than police communications because of security and privacy reasons. However, as it is stated at the previous questions, other solutions are being studied at the moment in order to provide this service. Q: CARABASSI MAST
OTHER NEWS:
During July a new communication mast started to go up at the back of the Carabassi bars, behind the Sunset Bar. Nobody knew who had sanctioned it, and questions then began to be asked. The police arrived and after a massive crane had lifted heavy parts onto the site everything then came to a standstill. It was found that no permissions had been given and the crane was recalled and everything taken down and driven away. Who on earth would have spent all of this money in getting a mast installed, without getting all of the necessary paperwork in place? Could the Town Hall give us any answers as to who was responsible? Town Hall Answer: After talking to Urbanism Department, it is confirmed that the company that was setting up the structure had no license (neither works license nor activity license). Furthermore, the structure didn’t comply with the “Plan de Implantación”, which is a study of the best location to set up an infrastructure like that and which is approved a long time ago (several years). Sometimes, it is hard to believe that a company

WARNING Dear GA Advertiser On the 14th of June my husbands was violently mugged outside the Rincon Restaurant in broad daylight at 3.30pm. There was no one around. The mugger came up behind us, we thought it was a mate mucking about at first, we are bowlers and belong to the bowls club and visit there on a regular basis. The attack happened so fast we didn't have time to do anything, he pulled at my husbands (man bag) all the contents, cards driving license etc, all gone, until it broke off, pulled him to the ground, he wasn't able to get up as ten days earlier he had a double hernia operation and still had the staples in which were due out the next day. He suffered a broken wrist, cuts and bruises and delayed healing re the hernia which has to be dressed everyday, but the wounds are healing now, can't say the same thing about our mental state. We always felt safe in Gran Alacant. The staff were very helpful when they realised what had happened, they cleaned my husband up, some of the staples had burst. An

No había nadie alrededor.

This year Lou and I were invited by the Santa Pola office of tourism to cover XXI International Swimming Crossing Tabarca-Santa Pola, which we were only too happy to do. So on Sunday morning the alarm went off at 5:30am and we promptly arrived at the Santa Pola harbour an hour later only to be informed the event had to be cancelled due to rough open water off the island. Luckily, the big advantage of Santa Pola is that you always have a perfect place to swim in the sea, so there was a plan B for all the 1158 swimmers who had turned up - 203 women and 955 men, including 3 participants from Gran Alacant. There was to be a race from Playa Lisa to the

Salt Lake and back, so after a short delay all safety boats were put in place and the hundreds of swimmers who came from all over Europe started to get themselves ready for the task ahead. Then the starting line was prepared and the contestants all gathered. A firework rocket was let off to signal the start and they were off! What an amazing spectacle it was - a real mad dash for the water. It was worth the early rise just to see the start of the race! As the swimmers swam into the distance and out of sight we decided to get a quick coffee and snack to await their return. Around 1hour later the first swimmer arrived at the finishing line followed by the rest over the next couple of hours. Then it was off to the prize ceremony tent where refreshments

had been laid on for all the participants. The overall winner was Daniel Ponce Jimenez with a time of 59 mins 52 secs and Rebeca Santos Arriaga in female category with a time of 01:01:28 During the prize ceremony a cheque was handed over for over 1400€ to a little girl from Santa Pola who suffers from terrible spinal disease. Every year the committee takes into account two or three individuals or charities to choose from. Donation was raised by part of the entrance fee for the race. Apart from participants and organizers, it’s absolutely necessary to mention the volunteers who help to organize this event every year. The event is divided into 3
main groups - the participants which are the ‘soul’, the board of directors who are the ‘heart’ and the volunteers who are the ‘blood’, so the volunteers are the most important group because the heart without the blood would not be of any use. If you feel you would like to take part in this annual event booking starts early in the year. If you would like to go and just watch the event next year it is well worth the early rise to see it, we are glad we did! You can see all our pictures and video on our website. Thanks to our advertisers who continually support the magazine.

GASP T H EAT RE GROU P
GASP Theatre Group, Gran Alacant’s own amateur dramatic group, were delighted to make a presentation of €500 to the Santa Pola Branch of Cruz Roja from the proceeds of the last production “A Breath of Spring”. President of GASP David Ashley told the members of Cruz Roja that GASP are always pleased to be able to make a donation as the residents of Gran Alacant very much appreciate the help and care that Cruz Roja provide. We all know someone who has had to call on them in an emergency. This was the latest in a series of donations from GASP, and hopefully there will be more in the future. Cruz Roja also help persons in need, so remember, when you come to see the shows, you are also helping your local community. The photo shows GASP members, led by David, presenting the donation at the Cruz Roja office in Santa Pola. wanted to hear their thoughts on the future living in Spain after the UK vote to leave the EU. Our members who were at the club on the day were happy to participate in the programme. The programme was screened on BBC One on Wednesday 29th June. Chatter
It’s another hot day in Gran Alacant and I’ve taken the opportunity to enjoy the afternoon, sat in my favourite square, Sierra Mar. The first place I frequented, when I moved to GA, six months ago. It is testament to the good folk that live here, that I have settled in well, made great friends and been accepted as part of a community, that is open and welcoming. I feel like I have been here for years. Britain isn’t far from the minds of all us Expats sipping cocktails at Zest, playing a game of Darts at Dicks or simply passing time, sitting talking to friends, who have returned from the UK, for another few weeks in the sun. The UK does seem a long way off, as we enjoy another glorious, hot day. Rain clouds over Britain, not only make for another summer wash out at home, but also the fears and trepidation of all those who have chosen to reside in Gran Alacant, and other areas, the length and breadth of the Costas in Spain! Expat’s fears are real, very real. Uncertain times make for apprehension among the community I now call home. A campaign in Britain, no information, misinformation, gossip and deception, that will affect the lives of all those from the UK, for a generation and beyond. Understandably, conversation will always include ‘Brexit’, as all of us who chatter in squares, try to piece together, the events that will shape the story of our lives now and in the future, and just where are we heading after such a resounding vote to leave The EU.
34
It’s two O’clock in the afternoon, and I’ve just ordered my second pint of Mahou. I’ve moved to the relative shade, in the corner of the court yard at Zest, away from the intense sun, talking to a couple of friends, I met, which seems like a life time ago now. They are angry about what Britain has done, in voting to leave Europe. What will they do? if their rights are removed. How will they survive? Just what future is there for them in Spain, now? There is almost a panic like fear, that the end is inevitable and it will take no prisoners, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The lack of clarity and information has left people worried and in extreme cases, putting out the ‘Se Vende’ sign, the day after The UK made its choice, in the hope of selling their home, lived in for a decade or more, returning to Britain, a country that they no longer know or who’s links to which, have long since gone. I am appalled at the way, my friends and neighbours have been ignored in a vote that will almost certainly affect their future more than most. Politicians, rarely spoke of the future of the Expat community in Europe, because in their eyes, it was not a vote winner. Typical of politicians! I have my own views on the ‘Brexit’ referendum. Due to the lack of facts and figures or credible evidence, available to me and others, I voted the way I thought was best for my home country. I voted with my conscience and not for egocentric, self gain. As a Spanish resident, I believe we have nothing to fear. Spain is not going to turf out a whole community of people, who, in Gran Alacant at least are the life blood of this small oasis on the Costa Blanca. Gran Alacant would close down over night.

Spain relies heavily on tourism, especially from Britain, would they really risk, further damage to their already fragile economy, by penalising us and those who come here for their two week holiday every year, just out of spite? NO I don’t think they will, it just will not happen. There will be changes, of course, but as people, we should always embrace change and use its path for a positive outcome. Change means new opportunities and a desire to make things better. We should all embrace that! As I get ready to leave Sierra Marr to grab a bite to eat in one of the many wonderful restaurants on my door step, I bump into a Spanish friend, who I met, little more than a fortnight ago. He immediately asks how I feel about the way Britain voted. He knows I am a bit of a political animal and always have a view on subjects, that affect the lives of others. Equally, his own interest in Spanish politics and the future of Europe is always discussed, with his usual Spanish bluntness, which I so admire. He is sad that we have taken the decision to leave. Unlike politicians, he has no animosity towards my kin folk, remains pragmatic and understands why we made the choice we have. This was not a vote about race and isolation, this was about stopping the waste and encouraging changes that will ultimately provoke a positive affect on the rest of the European Union. The sense of community, living as an Expat in Gran Alacant, is the most enduring aspect of life here. I was recently told there are over seventy different Nationalities, living and working together in this Urbanisation, all getting on, all respecting one another. Most of us, feel far removed from the events in
Westminster, or the bitterness in Brussels. Gran Alacant is a microcosm of Europe, where each persons views are different and valid. We all have our own hopes and fears for the future, but we are a model that Europe would do well to emulate. Life is good here, because of those who strive to live their lives in the best way they can, forging new bonds, friendships and relationships, accepting one another, adding to the colour and diversity that make up this place. I am glad to be a part of this commonwealth of like minded individuals, a prototype for others, more disingenuous should aspire too! The squabbling will rubble on in the UK. Residents will continue to chat in squares, expressing opinions over a glass of Rioja and a plate of tapas. The uncertainty will undoubtedly get worse before it gets any better, as the negotiations for withdrawal take place. Expatriates like myself, need assurances, that can not be given, all the time, there is political turmoil in The UK. When the dust settles, the new Prime Minister takes over her rather onerous, burdensome task and we start to see the first glimpse of our future outside of Europe, only then will the squares in Gran Alacant, be able to return to the old subjects, of weather and the cost of living. When that day comes and the infighting stops, the documents are sealed and the treaties finalised, the people I have met will finally be able to breath a sigh of relief!

PERIODONTAL DISEASE
B
esides dental decay, periodontitis is the other major disease that can affect the mouth and which your dentist can treat and help prevent. Plaque is a thin film of bacteria that grows on hard surfaces within the mouth, mostly at the junctions between tooth and gums. If left, the soft film will quickly calcify into hard calculus, making it very difficult to remove. The bacterial layer causes inflammation of the gingivae producing symptoms such as bleeding gums, bad breath and taste and ultimately loosening of the teeth. Plaque is actually an infection, the bacteria move down the tooth root attacking both the attachment of the tooth to the dental bone and also the bone itself. The effect of this is for the gums to recede making the teeth appear longer. In reality the teeth are not growing but more of the root is now exposed meaning less is left attached to keep the teeth firm. Small pockets open between the root and gum allowing more plaque to invade, causing more gum
4444
recession and further loosening the roots. In recent years gum disease has been linked with general health conditions such as diabetes, strokes, cardiovascular disease, poor pregnancy outcomes and even dementia. Prevention of periodontitis is by a thorough oral hygiene regime, tooth brushing at least twice per day, use of dental floss and professional scaling by a dental professional every 6 months. Treatment involves thorough cleaning of all susceptible areas, removing any contributing factors (food traps, faulty restorations etc.) and occasionally antibiotics. If you believe you may have gingival problems (and it is estimated that over 50% of adults have suffered from this condition) do not delay in seeking treatment. While it is possible to halt the disease, the tooth supporting bone will not re-grow and is lost forever. Regular scale and polishes at your dental clinic will help prevent gum disease and assist in maintaining a healthy mouth and body.

“Paragliding in Alicante - Amazing Spot” “A true experience on the summer vacation in Spain” It was our first paragliding-experience and it was great! Nick and his team are very trustworthy and make you feel very safe and comfortable before and during the flight. We would definitely recommend it! Also the spot where we flew was impressive and worth to drive more than an hour from Denia to Alicante. Thanks again to the whole team!
We were very satisfied with how Nick took care of our young ones during their flight. Very service minded team Nick and his wife, from booking until the flight itself. We got some really nice pictures to bring home too
“Amazing Paragliding in Alicante”
I had the pleasure to paraglide with Nick and I would definatly do it again! I got a lift from the airport and back to Alicante afterwards so no problem coming to the paragliding area. Before and on the flight I felt really safe and had a lot of fun with Nick, taking selfies and I was even allowed to take the handles and try to fly the paraglide - everything under control of Nick. The view is amazing and I love the adrenalin from flying. I had a really really long flight, because Nick didn’t have any costumers after me and afterwards we got a drink at a beach bar with some of his friends. So I can say I had an amazing flight experience and on top of that I met awesome people! If you are in Alicante area I would definatly recommend to fly with Doyouwanna!

OASIS MEDITERRÁNEO
August Events & Activities
This month, we are pleased to say we have teamed up with Elche office of tourism to provide information to help you explore this fascinating city located just a short distance away from Gran Alacant. There are many cultural activities taking place in Elche every month but the main event which is not to be missed is the “Mystery play of Elche” taking place on 14th and 15th of August. In May 2001, UNESCO declared it a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible World Heritage, thus making it the first Spanish festival to receive this award. It’s well worth a visit! The Mystery Play, or Festa d’Elx, the most authentic symbol of the city´s identity, is a chanted drama, of mediaeval origins, which traces the dormancy, the assumption to the skies and crowning of the Virgin Mary. It is divided into two acts: the Vespra or the Eve, which is performed on the 14th August and Dia de la Mare de Déu or Day of the Mother of God, on the 15th August. The scenario is the baroque Basilica of Santa Maria, the construction of which very much took into account this purpose. Access to the Basilica, both on the 14th and 15th, is free, with its doors remaining wide open. However, owing to the enormous popularity of the play and devotion that is felt for it by the people of Elche, it is essential to arrive at the church several hours in advance. AUGUST PERFORMANCE OF THE MYSTERY PLAY OF ELCHE 11/8 and 12/8, 22:30 Dress rehearsal (with tickets) 13/8, 17:30 Dress rehearsal (with tickets) 14/8, 18:00 The Vespra: 1st act of the Mystery Play (Free entrance) 15/8, 10:00 Funeral procession of the Virgin through the streets 15/8 18:00 The Festa - 2nd act of the Mystery Play (Free entrance)

SANTA POLA CANINE BEACH As everybody knows, we have a canine beach in Santa Pola. This is the only place of Santa Pola coast where dogs are allowed, so the access of dogs keeps strictly forbidden anywhere else, and we may be fined if we bring a dog to a non allowed area. At Santa Pola Town Hall website we can find some important info about the canine beach, such as location and admittance rules. From the home of the website, we hit “Playas” and then “Calas”, and then “Cala dels Gossets”, which is the official name of the canine beach. The requirements for admitting a dog are: • Microchip. • European Passport. • Non-expired rabies injection. • Non-expired antiparasitic treatment. Obviously they won’t allow to access for sanitary reasons: • Dogs suffering from a contagious disease. • Females in season. • Puppies which haven’t finished their vaccination plan. Dogs belonging to potentially dangerous breeds are also welcome, but they must obey the Dangerous Dogs Act (they must be on the lead and wear a muzzle). The Town Hall performs periodic controls of water and sand quality in order to confirm the good condition of the beach, and the results are published at the Town Hall website. At the website we can also find some recommendations such as not to forget to carry some plastic bags for picking the motions up, and to make sure the dog “goes to the toilet” before entering the beach (there is a canine toilet available near the beach). Apart from Santa Pola there are other Costa Blanca towns which have created a canine beach, and the admittance requirements may vary depending on the Town Hall, so, if you wish to visit any of the Alicante canine beaches, it’s a good idea to check the local Town Hall website first. A day at the beach with a pet is normally very funny for both pet and owner, but we should be careful with fishing hooks and pieces of fish or bait, which are very attractive for dogs, which tend to swallow everything. If we thing our dog has swallowed a fishing hook, it should be taken to the Vet immediately in order to confirm by X-Ray the presence and location of the hook. If the fishing line is visible in the mouth, you should never pull, because that will increase the damage. Another thing to be careful about when taking a dog to the beach is, of course, the heat stroke: dogs usually run and play a lot at the beach, so, if they don’t get very often into the water, body temperature may rise dramatically. The dog should be obliged to have a rest very often, and, if possible, the owner should avoid the hottest moments of the day. Some dogs tend, when they are swimming, to drink sea water. If that happens, you should expect a violent diarrhea some hours later, due to the high salt concentration of sea water. Anyway, the problem usually gets solved by itself. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop and the animal starts vomiting and gets lethargic, it’s time to see the Vet. We recommend to carry a bottle of tap or mineral water in order to let the dog drink potable water and to clean their eyes of necessary. Most dogs enjoy a day at the beach, and sea water and sand are usually good for the skin, so, unless it’s completely necessary, we don’t have to shampoo the animal every time it has gone to the beach. For some extra info, just visit Santa Pola Town Hall website.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
EXPLOSION IN A PAINTBOX THAT IS THE BEE-EATER
L
ast month I told you about the spectacular Hoopoe, one of the most distinctive birds of our area. This time, we’ll look at what is undoubtedly our most colourful bird, and it’s right here in the Clot right now. This is the explosion in a paintbox that is the Bee-eater. They don’t occur in the Clot every year, but this year there are at least two main groupings – there are four or five birds hanging around in the high trees just to the north of the main pool, and there is a larger group near the centre by the large civil war bunker. My picture shows an adult pair in full breeding plumage – as the summer progresses the feathers fade a bit towards the green end of the spectrum, but they are still a spectacular sight. Actually the easiest way to find them is to listen out for their calls, they are very chatty birds and have a distinctive liquid-sounding “Pruuiitt” call which carries a long way. You are likely to see them high in trees, or as in this case on a telephone wire, where they keep watch for flying insects, sally forth and often return to the same place to eat it. As the name suggests, the major part of their diet is bees and wasps, but of course you wouldn’t want to swallow a whole bee without dealing with the problem of getting rid of the sting! The Bee-eater does this by bashing the bee against a hard surface (a telephone wire or branch will do) and scraping it along until the venom sac is removed. They also feed on other larger insects such as dragonflies, crickets and cockchafers, but they definitely prefer bees when they can get them. Each year, they excavate a hole in a bank to lay their eggs, and will not re-use old
94 94
sites, so they will search for new territories. This makes sense – you wouldn’t want to revisit a place full of old eggshells and last year’s droppings, would you? A nesting pair will often have “helpers”, these may be unpaired birds or even the offspring from previous years, who will assist with bringing up the current crop of chicks. Once fledged, the birds will gather in even larger flocks before they commence their migration away from our area to Africa, and towards the end of this month and through September, you might encounter large flocks in the countryside of more than 100 birds feeding up before commencing their long journey. The birds occur annually in the UK in very small numbers, and over the past fifty years or so have managed to breed on about five occasions – when they do, this becomes national news and usually the nesting site is well protected by organisations such as the RSPB who allow people to observe them under highly controlled conditions. Fortunately this is not required in Spain, where they are relatively common throughout the peninsula. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

I was in the restaurant yesterday when I suddenly realized I desperately needed to pass gas. The music was really, really loud, so I timed my gas with the beat of the music. After a couple of songs, I started to feel better. I finished my coffee, and noticed that everybody was staring at me... Then I suddenly remembered that I was listening to my iPod.
