Hope you all enjoyed our first edition of the magazine. There were a few stressful moments, I can assure you. In the last few weeks we met some great folks all wishing us well and giving us lots of encouragement. We know Barry and Sandra will be a hard act to follow. They will be with us for a while so don’t worry. Camila’s support has been invaluable also. The M.A.B.S. show which we attended for the first time was absolutely brilliant. What a great evening we had! There have been a few issues with the facebook page but it should be sorted soon. We would like to say thank you to everyone as you have already made us feel at home in just two very fast moving months. A big thank you to all our readers, customers, and contributors over the last twelve months. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and “What to see” for this month ...
Hi everybody
In December we will have parades of Moors and Christians held in Alicante and in Monforte del Cid from 5th to 9th. In Santa Pola, like every year, on December the 10th, at about 8pm in the harbour area, we celebrate the arrival of our Madonna Virgen de Loreto. There are also local fiestas in Alfaz del Pi, Agost, Callosa d’En Sarria. Pilgrimages take place in Denia and Sella. Also do not forget on the 28th the spectacular flour battle that takes place in Ibi, “Els Enfarinats” a battle of flour. At the “Casa de Cultura” in Santa Pola there will be concerts held on the 19th, 21th, 22nd and 26th of December and 2nd of January. All for free but you have to get an invitation ticket, these will be at your disposal, 2 per person, two days before the day of the performance at the Culture House in Elche street. On the 24th of December there will be a small parade. The biggest parade the three kings parade will be held on the 5th of January. The best of these parades is the one held in Alcoy, its simply magic. Also I would like to make a special mention of the most important sporting event held in Santa Pola the International Half Marathon Villa de Santa Pola that will be held on the 24th of January at 10:30 a.m. Come and enjoy this fantastic event. On 29th of December there will be 2 guided tours in English - Ruta Natural in the morning and Ruta Mar in the afternnoon. Reservation necessary, groups are limited to 30 people max. Call 966 696 052 or visit our tourist offices.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, and answers to your questions, from Paco Carbonell, Councillor of Citizen Services, as we have since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Ged and Barry attended a meeting at the Town Hall this month, to discuss questions from our readers. Question: TAXI STORY A taxi story told to me at the magazine. A couple on GA booked a cruise out of Barcelona. To join the ship they decided to take the train from Alicante, to Barcelona. They approached a legal taxi driver on Gran Alacant and booked his taxi for 5:45am on the morning of the trip. They laughingly told him not to miss the alarm as they had to catch the early train. The morning arrived and so did 5:45am and no taxi. They waited in vain until 6am and hurriedly decided to get their own car out and drive to Alicante train station. They then had to park the car there, at a cost, for the duration of their cruise. The local taxi company is continually telling us not to use illegal taxis. and then they do this to their fares. Do you also have a similar story to tell. Town Hall Answer: We understand the anger that those people would

have felt, but this is not a reason for illegal taxis to be used. If the taxi driver isn’t on time, they could have phoned to another taxi driver. Despite this, as we have said before, it is understandable those people are concerned about this issue and we want to let them know that we are aware and that we are working hard so as taxi infrastructures would be developed as soon as possible.
the local police thoughts on the number of beggars outside our supermarkets.
Question: QUERY: NEW SLIP ROAD JOINING N332 A reader mentioned activity by the exit slip road off our urbanization and wondered if work had started on a new slip road.
Town Hall Answer: The Clot is usually sprayed when our technicians, collaborating with Conselleria’s environmental technicians, decide to be the best season. We know that this year there have been lots of mosquitoes, which is due to the lack of rain and the high temperatures. Regarding to this, we are in conversations at this moment with Conselleria in order to set up a procedure spraying planning.
Town Hall Answer: Related to this, we’re studying the situation of this slip road so as the best option, both economical and environmental-friendly can be taken. At this moment, we’re having conversations with the Ministry and Conselleria so as we can have all the information and can make the right decision.
Town Hall Answer: About this issue, both Town Hall and Local Police think that those people must be helped by Social Services interventions. Question: TOO MANY MOSQUITOS THIS YEAR When does spraying normally take place against the mosquitoes?
Question: BEGGARS What are the Town Hall and

Question: GA POLICE STATION We hear that there may be a police station sited on the urbanisation? Town Hall Answer: Both, Police and Infrastructure Councillors are studying the better place in order to locate a police station in Gran Alacant as soon as possible, but this takes time. That is why we ask people for their patience, because we want to solve all the problems and do it the better way.
not called so I can show them the problems around this area . Many thanks Bill We have visited the site with Bill to see if any improvements had taken place since we spoke to the Town Hall previously, much of the rubbish had been cleared and the supermarket had collected their trolleys, but still more needs to be done. Thank you Paco. Before:
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Bridge Repair Work: - The repair work to the bridge onto Gran Alacant will start in January. An email to us. Hi Barry & Sandra. hope this finds you both well. In my last email I asked if you could inform the Mayor of Santa Pola that I was back from Italy as it was said in reply to my email published in the Advertiser last month that she would pay me a visit re Calle Malta etc. I realise after reading the reply myself it wouldn't be the Mayor who was to visit me, but a representative from the town hall. My friend got it wrong! So I am asking when you meet next with the town hall representatives, can you please ask why I have not heard anything from them re the meet? I am disappointed they have

enjoyed the wonderful M.A.B-S show over a four evening performance. More info with pictures in this issue. ASPETGA’S Annual Halloween Party: a great evening was had by all at recent Halloween Dog Party held at the Gran Alacant Dog Park (near the Repsol station). The dogs were all dressed up for the occasion and they certainly got into party mood. There were obstacle courses for pets, games for children and costume parade with prizes for best costumes. Charity Collections: Be very careful giving to Charity, especially when someone rings your doorbell and shows you an official card. The Town Hall have always told us that these people are ILLEGAL, just lining their own pockets. This can also apply to others raising money for good causes. Make sure they are legal and not inflating their own bank accounts. ‌ more news next month If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, please email granalacantadvertiser @hotmail.co.uk

Gracias. Paco. Antes:

Our artists sang their hearts out and many arriving from the UK just to appear in the show. Thanks to our two sponsors the costumes shone like stars who were wearing them. This made the show extra spectacular. CLINICA VETERINARIA GRAN ALACANT EXOTICS
Tel: 966 698 569 A RECOMMENDATION FOR CHRISTMAS
As we usually do, in the last article of the year we are not going to write about diseases, parasites or brand new treatments. We are going to offer some advice, thinking on Christmas. Four years ago, my aunt Nieves phoned me; she was really scared because little Coco, a 13 years old miniature Schnauzer, had a problem. Coco didn’t want (or maybe he was unable to) move from under the table, and couldn’t move his head. Then I went to my aunt house as quick as I could, and, meanwhile, I was thinking on nasty things such a paralysis, a stroke, or maybe a very bad complication of the diabetes Coco was suffering for the last 6 years. When I arrived to my aunt’s house Coco’s attitude was actually
56
Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
very strange: he was lying down very quiet, and refused to move when I called him. Had he a mobility problem, or any kind of sudden deafness? I took Coco in my arms and lifted him to put him on the table for starting a medical exploration. He wasn’t rigid, but he was trembling. He was able to follow my movements with his eyes. Then, I touched gently his neck to find out if he had pain at the area. His mouth was tightly closed, and it looked like he was unable to open it. But, suddenly, he opened his mouth and spitted out… a lamb chop bone! My aunt said “poor little thing! He had a bone stuck in his mouth.” and held Coco in her arms. “No, aunt “–I replied-“no stuck bone. He had just stolen that bone from the dustbin and didn’t want us to confiscate it.” And that was the truth: Coco had stolen that bone from the kitchen and tried to “hide” under the table. When he was caught he closed his mouth because he didn’t want anybody to take his bone, and
decided not to move. That time he couldn’t eat the bone he stole, but it was very common to discover small traces of bread or rice at his Schnauzer moustache. Fortunately he never had a stuck bone at his mouth (nor at any other place of his digestive tract). So this is our recommendation for this year celebrations: have a dustbin with a cover. During Christmas there usually are at home lots of things our pets love: meat, seafood, sweets… and sometimes there are lots of guests at home, so we rarely have enough time to put everything in a safe place. Our cats and dogs are always waiting for the best moment to provide themselves an “extra”, which may produce serious digestive problems. We should take precautions with the food and those objects which may be dangerous, specially in case of cats, which find very attractive Christmas ornaments. Those ornaments may be dangerous if they break, or if they are swallowed. Merry Christmas and happy new year.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
It is around this time of year that your Auntie Mabel and Uncle Horace are deciding what sort of card to send you for Christmas. They will think that you might like a reminder of home, and send you a card with a Robin on it, because of course they are British birds and you won’t be seeing one where you are on the Costa Blanca, will you? Well it’s true we don’t see any Robins in the Clot during summer, but by November there are plenty of them around. These are migrants from the extreme north of Europe which have joined the Black Redstarts, Bluethroats and Chiffchaffs in our area to spend the winter feasting on mozzies and other insects. In the UK, they are of course well-known garden birds who will sit on your fence and wait for you to uncover a worm or two while you’re digging, but here in Spain they are much more wary; they will usually keep away from gardens and forage in the undergrowth in the Clot, which is where I took this photograph in the overgrown reed bed at the scrape hide – it was the only place where I could catch one unawares! The Robin’s song which can be heard all year round, and even during the night, is one of those things which doesn’t mean quite what we might expect. To us, it is a cheery little ditty, reminding us that spring is not too far away; but to another male Robin it means – “this is my patch, keep away or I’ll poke your eyes out”. If you watch two male Robins squaring up, they will batter seven bells out of each other while singing furiously, and unless one of them gives in and flies away there will be no technical knock-out – they will fight to the death, and some estimates put the Robin death rate from fighting as high as 12 per cent. This is why you never see Robins in a flock. If you see two together, they are a breeding pair, and because the sexes are similar, a lot of posturing and singing goes on while the male attempts to establish if the other bird is a potential mate or a potential punch-bag. The reason why Robins appear on so many Christmas cards goes back to Victorian times. British Postmen wore red uniforms in the late 19th century, and were nicknamed Robins, so the bird on your card represents the promise of a postal delivery. The Spanish name is Petirrojo – “Little Red Thing” which proves that when it came to naming the birds both the Spanish and the British didn’t have a word for orange at the time. A Happy Christmas to my regular readers and I’ll see you both next year!
