What a scorching month’s weather. Local papers saying it has been the hottest July on record. Also some days the humidity has been in the 90’s. Suppose it is why we moved out here. The sea has been so warm and it has been like a permanent holiday being amongst all of the holiday makers on the beach, seeing them all enjoying themselves.

We thank all of our readers and advertisers for making this, our biggest ever edion for the month of August. Thank you.

With the new positive link with the new people at the Town Hall, we hope to keep bringing you all of the local news throughout the coming years. Have a good month Sandra & Barry

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the news, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005. If you have any questions or problems you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine. This month we introduce a new Mayor at the Santa Pola/Gran Alacant Town Hall. We met her in July and have her picture on our front cover. Her name is Yolander xxxxx and we have offered her a page as an introduction to all of our readers, in this months issue. With there being no Councillor resident on Gran Alacant, we have arranged with the Town Hall that you can email any questions problems etc to us at our magazine, where, in our monthly meetings with Town Hall representatives, we will put your emails to them and print those emails with their replies in our next issue. Our email address is www.granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Our magazine has always been known for passing information back and forth between the Town Hall and our readers, which we will continue to do. We are happy to help read our magazine at ------www.granalacantadvertiser.com------

Hello Sandra and Barry! I have to send you this mail because I yesterday had a very alarming and stressing situation, which afterwards has given me some thoughts. About 17.50 I had just left El Faro with my car, and only 400 meters from the entrance on Avenida Escandinavia I saw on the left side big flames coming from burning trees because of a forest fire!!

4

I stopped my car, started to use the car signal and at the same time I tried to phone 085 (Bomberos) and 112 (Emergencias) -WITHOUT ANY RESULT!!!!!!! Fortunately I saw a man on the street and was yelling to him: “Call Bomberos or Police” and I had to drive further on because I had to pick up friends, who should be at the airport very soon. On the way to Gran Alacant shopping center, we saw the first police car on the way so we understood that someone had succeeded to get in contact with at least the police. This situation is just what I have been thinking of earlier, when you many times cannot use your mobile phone in Gran Alacant because of the very poor COBERTURA. Everybody can sometimes need help in a emergency situation!! It must be matters for the politicians to start an investigation to find out what can be done to solve this very bad situation. I don’t want to think of what yesterday could had happened if the fire had spread to greater areas including houses in the neighborhoods. Perhaps the new political situation in Santa Pola can change the standpoint to do something, because this problem has been discussed a lot of times during the past years. Without any changes to the better. Hope you can inform someone who have the authorities to deal with this matter. Best regards, Nils

During July, 1134 swimmers, (906 men and 209 women) participated in the twentieth edition of the Swimming Crossing Tabarca - Santa Pola. Marqués Jaime Velasco (1987) was proclaimed winner with a time 1:17:28 he was from Toledo Swimming Club and it was his first Tabarca - Santa Pola Crossing. Three minutes sixteen seconds later came Daniel Ponce Jimenez, Elche Tennis Club. Just two seconds after the third place was fellow Club member José Luis Larrosa. From early in the morning a large audience welcomed swimmers on the Varadero Beach. High temperatures did not deture spectators on this twentieth year. From the Swimming club Alone we want to thank all the help received: volunteers, canoeists, Local Police, Civil Guard, Fire Department City of Alicante, Civil Protection, Red Cross, SAMU, Territorial Department of Ports and Customs, Club Náutico Santa Pola, sponsors and Contributors to the continued success of the event each year. Not to mention the

collaboration of Hon. City of Santa Pola. We are very pleased with the outcome of this years event as 1,134 participated and 1,115 completed the race. From this point begins the countdown to prepare the crossing of next year. Hi Regarding last month's issue of the new bins, please can the council put signs on the bins so everyone knows what goes in where. We have a lot of holiday makers here and they have no clue as to what to do. The times we have been to the rubbish bins and the cardboard boxes are pushed into general rubbish so there is no room for anything else. Thanks very much. Santa Pola excelled again in staging the 3rd International 10km road race. The crowds turned out on the

5

streets of Santa Pola to support the 4000 runners every step of the way. Although the race started at 9.00pm the temperature on the starting line was still in excess of 32 Deg C but this didn’t stop Martin Kurong, Moses finishing first in 28mins 56 secs. Estaban Poveda, Marta was the first female finisher in 35mins 40 Secs. To put things in perspective, Martin Kurong Moses was finishing as I was somewhere between 5 -6 km. The 10km race is just one of the many sporting events organised throughout the year by the various agencies in Santa Pola. These include the Duathalon, Triathalon, Tabarca Swim and the Half Marathon (21km), all of which attract top class athletes to the area and place Santa Pola as a preferred destination to participate in sport. These events would never take place without the support from the Town Hall and the volunteers, but the participants and the supporting crowds ensure the overall success. Why not come along next time to lend your support, or even better, take part. info supplied to us by Geoff Young see the poster on pages 12 and 13. read our magazine at www.granalacantadvertiser.com

We asked the Town Hall about the shut down of illegal taxis that ferry people around Gran Alacant and explained the problems this causes to bar and restaurant customers. When being taken from a bar to home a charge of 12 to 15 euro was being

6

applied. We made it clear that business for the bars and restaurants would be hit. If people were going to have to pay these kind off sums, no one would go out to use these businesses. We put all of the problems of language, not knowing addresses, starting the meter before starting the ride, charging for coming from Santa Pola etc etc. They promised they would look into the problem. We will have an answer in next months issue read our magazine at

One of the main things the new party are looking at, is why Gran Alacant residents pay much more in tax than those resident in Santa Pola. They see it as very unfair and hope to be able to make changes. We at the magazine will of course, keep you informed.

More news next month in our September issue Sandra and Barry

Dear friends and readers of the Gran Alacant Advertiser. I am excited to be able to write to you. The new government team, headed by me, has the determination to contribute to the welfare of all citizens of our municipality.

In order to give a better service, the Councilors of the government, besides being in the town hall, will be present in Gran Alacants town hall office on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9am to 11am.

Furthermore, we have already implemented a social networks contact forum to collect any doubts, complaints or suggestions of our citizens, so that we can act quicker and more effectively. With these measures, our aim is for neighborhoods like Gran Alacant, Santa Pola del Este or Playa Lisa will be able to have a direct contact with all the Councilors. These neighborhoods gain 11 Councilors as they are all Councilors of Santa Pola.

We want to improve, among other things; the Post Office, the police checkpoint, urban transport and mediate to achieve a second school for Gran Alacant. Thank you all very much, especially the team of Gran Alacant Advertiser. Yolanda Seva

Sandra and Barry

Yolanda Seva

RESPONSIBLE USE OF ANTOBIOTICS IN PETS

The reason for this month article is there is a campaign from Alicante Veterinary College

about using antibiotics properly.

Antibiotics are absolutely necessary for fighting against bacterial infections, so

they have to be used correctly for avoiding any complication.

Antibiotics, just like any other medicine, have side effects and contraindications,

and not every antibiotic is valid for every animal. For example certain antibiotics may kill

a rodent or rabbit, even with low dosages; and some long treatments for chronic

diseases are not compatible with some antibiotics.

For all these reasons, the only qualified person for prescribing antibiotics for

pets is the Vet. Every individual will need a different pattern (dosage and duration of the treatment), according to its personal circumstances (weight, species, etc) and the

pathology we are talking about.

When the Vet prescribes “one pill every twelve hours before meals”, is just

because that’s the only right pattern. Of course we know following it strictly may be

difficult in some cases, because some animals won’t take a pill without hiding it in food,

or maybe because the owner spends most of the day working, or because he is going to be on holidays the following days, and some friend or neighbor is going to look after the pet… If that’s the case, the best option it to discuss it with the Vet in order to try to

find an alternative pattern consisting on using a 24 hours antibiotic, or maybe a 15-days

unique injection (a very comfortable and effective option, but specially in large animals,

expensive). What the owner must NEVER do is to modify the prescribed pattern by himself.

If antibiotics are not correctly used (for example, pharmacologically speaking,

half a tablet every 12 hours is NOT the same as one tablet every 24 hours!!!), bacteria

become resistant, and those “improved bacteria” will spread and affect other animal and people, and antibiotics will help very little against them. Of course, this is not going

to happen in only one week, but if we use the antibiotics systematically the wrong way, this will happen sooner or later.

The only legal way to dispose antibiotics (or any other medicine) we are not

going to use, is to take them to the pharmacy, if possible, with the original packaging.

There is a “punto SIGRE” in every pharmacy, where you can leave the medicines you are

not going to use (for example because they are expired), and, this way, pharmacological waste will be processed according to the law.

WHAT’S THAT? IN THE CLOT?

by Mark Etheridge

I’m in a bit of a quandary – for this August issue of the GA Advertiser. I am aware that many readers will be on their summer holidays and might only ever see this one issue (although of course you can read it online when you get home!), and I’d like to tell you about one of the really special birds we have in this area, but the problem is that it is quite rare and too many holidaymakers looking for this bird might disturb it. It’s not actually in the Clot, but quite close by; however if I send you all charging down to the place where they are it could end up like Benidorm beach and the bird needs some peace and quiet to get on with what it’s here for – bringing up the next generation.

This is the Rufous Bush Robin or Rufous Bushchat (depending on which bird guide you read, but the Spanish simply call it the Alzacola Comun). It is one of the last of our summer visitors to arrive, and this year was not present until well into June, by which time most of our other visitors were well-established and getting on with their nests. It is a warmth-loving bird, so of course it’s going to do well with all the lovely weather we are having, and will find plenty of insects and the occasional worm which are its staple diet. It is a little larger than the common European Robin, and looks like a rather insignificant tawny-brown bird when seen in good light, but if you catch it in the right mood (the bird’s, not yours) it may show off its rather spectacular tail as shown in my photo. This is much used during the courtship display, and one of the endearing traits of this bird is that it will show off to a prospective partner and ignore you even when you are standing just a few feet away! It spends a lot of time running around on the ground in our area, so if you know where to look you should be able to get very good views of it. Those of you who are really keen to get a sighting of this bird should contact the ever-reliable Costa Blanca Bird Club online, where someone will be sure to give you the directions to see this special bird, or even take you there in return for a very cold beer or similar. I won’t be able to do the honours myself, as I find the August heat a little too much for my liking and I won’t be back until September! You can see more photos of birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
