We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Bin Hi Ged & Lou, We live in Avda. Polonia and I'm writing to ask why the bin at the school end of the road has made its way down to pretty much the next street (Avda. Polonia 296)? Anyone wanting to deposit their heavy bin bags into it now have to walk down to next street almost 100 metres away!!!! And bizarrely the bin for Avda. 296 is only maybe 20 metres from our bin!!! Please can this be corrected and put back at top of street in the right place for our community & street for us to use? Regards, Ian
talk to Urbaser to find out the reason why your bin had been moved. Please keep us informed. Update ref. Broken bin: Just to let you know our bin on Avenida del Carabassi outside Mediterranio 3 was finally repaired. Thank you Patrick Update Pedestrian Crossing: The tree has finally been cut and the pedestrian crossing sign is visible again.
GA Advertiser’s reply: We have made the councillor aware of the problem with your bin. He asked for more time to look into this matter for you and

LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA
FEW PICTURES OF BIG TIDY UP
Following requests from the Gran Alacant Neighbourhood Association, ASPETGA and residents, the department of cleaning, parks and gardens will ensure that the dog park, the adjacent children’s play area and the park that borders the Clot will be included in their regular cleaning and maintenance activities. This is great news and will mean that residents can continue to enjoy these communal areas of our neighbourhood safely. ASPETGA was extremely grateful, as it is important that the bins in the dog park are regularly emptied and all areas cleaned and kept free of plants, especially those that are dangerous to dogs. Once repairs have been made to the water fountain, the drains have been cleared, the agility equipment re-varnished and all the broken areas replaced, dogs and their owners will again be able to benefit from all of the facilities for exercising and socialising.

I expect that you have all heard by now that Maureen died in the early hours of 7th September after a long struggle with cancer. I know that a lot of friends here in Gran Alacant wanted to celebrate her life. She was a very popular person, very friendly, sociable, she would help anyone. She raised money for MABS then a machine for Elche hospital. Because of Covid, Michele and Gerald couldn’t give Maureen the send off they would have liked. They had to celebrate her life on there own. Michele flew in to Spain and with the help of her husband Peter they set up the service for the family to participate in a virtual zoom conference which they shared with close friends. Pink Champagne, a gammon joint with trifle and a Darts tournament with her grandchildren took place in her honour and memory. All her favourite things. I was fortunate that I was invited to join the celebration with her son Gerald and his family. When a star stops shining in the sky another one lights up. Unknown to the family at the funeral, one of her granddaughters was pregnant when she passed. Rest in peace Maureen, you will always be with us in our hearts. I would ask all her friends to raise a glass to the wonderful person Maureen Keeler, rest in peace. Ann Murray

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB RENTAL AGREMENT REACHED WITH THE OWNER
The Club Captain Chris Merry and I were delighted to be able to advise Members that as from 1st October we have concluded and signed an Agreement with the Owner to rent the rink and additional facilities to enable bowling to continue at Monte Mar. The discussions were extended as a result of the virus, but we believe we can now look forward to a positive for Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club. We will of course keep Members informed of subsequent developments and look forward to their continued support. Chris Harding Chairman FRIDAY LEAGUE Friday 25th September Despite all the restrictions everyone has had a good time participating in the Friday night competition, held over six weeks. As always it started out for fun but everyone is competitive so it soon became a competition!!! The last match was played on Friday 25th September and the winners were Graham Smythe and David Yarrow both with fifty seven points, Ian Hamilton was third with fifty four points. All the matches were great fun, followed by some excellent meals and of course drinks in bars and restaurants in the square. CHICKEN RUN Sunday 27th September The monthly chicken run was nearly back to normal with thirty players taking part. All the present restrictions were still followed by all players. We also had a table top sale which was well supported, all proceeds went to the club funds. The football card was won by Howie, thank you to all for your support. The ladies chicken was won by Pauline Merry with a very good score of thirty four shots. The men's chicken was won by Dave Yarrow, the men's eggs were won by Gearge. Debbie playing her first chicken run won the ladies eggs.

A three wood mixed pairs competition was held at the club. This event should have been staged in the Spring but was delayed due to Covid-19. Twelve teams entered the competition, playing two games against drawn opposition with the results entered onto a master score sheet. At the last moment a scratch team of two men was co-opted for the competition as a result of illness, their score was discounted as it was not a mixed team. After the game we all went to one of our sponsors, La Piazza Restaurant for a meal. This was followed by Club Chairman, Chris Harding announcing the winners, Lynda Saunders and John Hunt and presenting them with a bottle of drink each. Joint second were the teams of Wendy and Iain Sheridan and Wendy Latham and Paul Dodd. The day was enjoyed by all who took part.

AROMATHERAPEUTICS
back to the ancient civilizations, reflected in comprehensive systems of healing such as Ayurvedic medicine, massage, reflexology, an unbroken tradition for many years. Yet we in the western world are only just beginning to awaken to the wisdom of the past. Thankfully we are now experiencing an upsurge of interest in traditional systems of healing whose incredibly complex philosophies were once dismissed as ‘primitive’ or ‘superstitious’ The aim of holistic healing is to nurture the mind/body complex, treating the person as a whole. The spiritual aspect is hard for some to understand, but this aspect is tied up with our sense of purpose and meaning. Without purpose we become depressed, life then appears bleak and meaningless. It is important for us to be conscious of our sense of purpose and meaning.
This month I am touching on my most loved topic and bringing you some valuable recipes to use at home over the coming months. As you all know I am very ‘holistic’ and like to make and use all natural products. Even though I have been writing in the magazine for a while now I feel like I have barely scratched the surface on holistics. So here is a little fact of the month.
No matter our situation, if somewhat challenging, those who live and breath the holistic ideal have qualities such as peace, compassion, intuition and nurturing of self and others as a whole.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF HOLISTIC? The word itself has its roots in Greek holos, meaning whole or multi-dimensional (think of a hologram) the word itself only came into being in the 1970s (I have truly been born with the word!!) the concept can be traced
This month I leave you with my favourite holistic path … “Aromatherapy”. Some aromatic prescriptions from one of my favourite books. Being a person who in the past experienced the cold several

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
HOOPOE
There can’t be many residents of the Costa Blanca with even a passing interest in nature, who don’t know the Hoopoe – that pink-bodied bird with an incredible crest and black and white wings which flaps past you like a huge butterfly, or who sits on your TV aerial at early o’clock and wakes you up with its repetitive hoop-hoop call. Although a bit on the shy side, they can be seen on most days in the Clot. They are present throughout the year, although around half their population will move south to Southern Spain or North Africa for the winter, leaving a few birds to tough it out in the cooler months here. It has been researched that many migrating birds can use the earth’s magnetic field and sun position to work their way south – but what happens if things go wrong? Let me take you to the far North of Scotland, and to my home city of Aberdeen. Here we have a football team known as the Dandy Dons, or in sporting parlance, Aberdeen Nil. They have an impressive stadium known as Pittodrie, which is right on the coast of the North Sea, and subject to the icy blasts which sweep across from Scandinavia. Next to the stadium is the players and management car park – usually a bustling place, but since the arrival of You-Know-What, an open wasteland.
58 58 58
Quite why a Hoopoe should find this area an ideal site to spend the autumn is quite beyond me, yet here one is. At the time of writing, he has been here for well over a week, foraging in the rough areas around the parking site, and finding quite enough food to keep him happy (so far). He’s been using his long curved beak to dig in the softer ground, pulling out worms and grubs, and dodging the attention of the assembled twitchers who are gathering in their dozens to see this aberrant wanderer. Most watchers are keeping their distance (my shot was taken with a very long lens combination) but one or two idiots have been trying to get very close, clearly disturbing this rare visitor. Something has gone seriously wrong with his mental sat-nav, and here he is at least a thousand miles from where he ought to be. It’s not just him – at least three other Hoopoes were known to be in Scotland during October, and a handful more in the rest of the UK. Whether or not they will manage to reset their internal navigation systems and fly in the correct direction remains to be seen. So he’s become quite the local celebrity, appearing in both the local press and TV, although it has to be said that the journalists reporting this event are a bit hazy on basic bird facts – the press report tells us that this bird is “nesting” at Pittodrie. Nesting? October? One bird on his own? I don’t think so…. But he has brought welcome memories of Spain to those of us yearning to get back to to some warmth and sunshine! You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

2021 CHALLENGES: BREXIT AND CORONAVIRUS
In this article we would like, first of all, to remind all pets owners that, so far, negotiations between EU and UK about BREXIT, haven’t borne fruit yet. This means that, if there is no change before Dec 31st, dogs, cats and ferrets which travel from EU to UK and vice versa, will be required to have a rabies antibodies blood test performed to be allowed to cross the border. If your pet has already a rabies blood test, please make sure it’s still valid (it is if, from the blood sampling date, you have never done rabies injection too late, that is, after the expiration date. If you have been late any year, you must start the process from zero). If you have to start from zero, the sooner the better, because the whole thing may take 3 or 4 months till your animal is ready to cross. If finally there is an agreement between EU and UK and UK becomes a listed country, no blood test will be required (some examples of non-EU listed countries are Argentina and Russia, so a priori UK should be a listed country, but unfortunately nobody knows now due to the stupidity of politicians). We suppose that lots of people that want to travel to the UK at the beginning of 2021, will eventually prefer to put their pets on kennels. If that’s your chosen option, the moment for booking (and to find out which are the requirements (vaccines, antiparasitic treatments) of the boarding kennel) is now.

#2: Dogs are able to detect non-symptomatic corona patients. There are some places in Europe and America where specially trained dogs are used for detecting non-symptomatic patients, in a similar way to anti-drug or anti-explosives dogs, via a sample of sweat, collected from the person with a piece of paper from the skin of the neck. So, a blood sample or collecting a swab from the throat wouldn’t be necessary: in less than 10 seconds, the trained dog can detect a positive. That simple: no expensive tests, no aggressive sampling from nose or throat, no waste... At this moment, in Spain, they are training a group of dogs for this purpose. It’s called the K-anary Project, and let’s hope it’s ready soon. So, once again, here we have dogs helping mankind: they accompany their owners, help rescuing people, detect explosives and drugs, help blind people, protect and play with our children ... and now they can help us to stop a pandemic. We mustn’t forget that apart from dogs, other pets are working hard: a big quantity of rabbits, Guinea pigs and cats are being a priceless support for confined children and elderly. So, here are some extra reasons to be grateful to our pets for their help.
Of course, apart from BREXIT, the other trending topic nowadays is NCoV-19. Vets are not an exception, and we would like to tell two things about this matter: #1: Day after day, the fact that domestic pets are NOT a source of transmission of NCoV-19 is confirmed, so, it’s not necessary to take any extra measurements with pets: no dogs, or cats, or birds suffer or transmit SARS NCoV-19.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY
With the onset of darker and colder mornings we have been negotiating with the Course officials about changing our normal 8am tee time for a later one. Accordingly, for November and December, we have ended up with a mixture of times to fit in with arrangements made by the Club with other parties. Please therefore make contact with either of the numbers below to check the time for any particular day you wish to join us. As regards January and February we expect to have a regular time but more on that next month. The Society details are as follows: Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The offficial address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante. When: the formal Society Day is Tuesday’s weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together on Friday’s weekly which has always been a Gentleman’s Day. Time: on both days at normally at 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the
Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.
Cost: usually 50 euros per round at peak times to include a buggy plus 1.50 euros mandatory insurance charge. Can be cheaper during less busy off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires 5 euros sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018)
