We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month
Hi everybody,
In February you can enjoy Moors and Christians parades in Bocairente from 3rd to 6th and in Sax from 1st to the 5th. Another activity in February is Carnivals. All Towns along the Costa Blanca celebrate Carnivals, one of the best in the area is the one held in Torrevieja, and there are several other events too. There are two main carnival parades first one is on Sunday 11th at 4:30p.m. and the second on Saturday the 17th at 9:00p.m. About sports, if you’ve any friend or family that would like to join The Tabarca-Santa Pola Open Waters Swim you have to warn them that pre-registration process will be from 9th to 20th February. Like every February do not miss the almond blossom in Jalon or Guadalest valleys. But if you want to see something special go to see my favourite “El valle de la Seta” and enjoy the little villages of Famorca and Facheca. It could be beginning, middle or end of the month, but it lasts about ten days. I do not know what is going to happen this year but last year I spent a day out there and it really was wonderful, go and discover it by yourself. Bye bye friends. Hello Everyone, What a great start to the year for Gran Alacant following FWR cars on Bargain Brits in the sun and scenes were also filmed in Gran Alacant for a major French film last year. We start this year with another TV programme featuring Gran alacant A place in the sun! Have a great Valentine’s night everyone, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 12 and Casper on page 31

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Quicker Bus Service Dear Sirs, Having a house in Gran Alacant, I miss proper quick bus service to the Airport, Alicante and Santa Pola. What is needed is a big busstop near the GA shopping enter on the road N-332, close to the gas station. Where most of the buses that travel that road N-332 can take up persons who want fast transport and much more buses to choose from. Cannot be too expensive and a big improvement in service for people in GA. I have heard many friends of mine in GA wanting the same. Best Regards Tomas - Sweden Town hall answer: Regarding to this question, this request has been transferred to the Public Services Department, so as a communication can be enabled with Conselleria, because the Town Hall haven’t got the competence related to public transport. Q: Postal Service Hello, I write this email to you to let you know about what happened to me because of the bad postal service in Gran Alacant. During the month of September Elche's dole office sent me a letter where they asked me to come in on the 21st of November. As this letter never arrived, so I never went to the appointment, therefore the Provincial Work Department of Alicante sanctioned me with a 1-month unpaid... which is unfortunately December. I have presented a complaint, but to my surprise, they have maintained the sanction. I have presented another complaint with a document that was given to me by the town hall where I expose my problem. Funny enough, I went to the Post Office, and both the Manager and Director told me that "the postmen aren't required to know
6
the names of the urbanisations because they only look at the street names" ... I ask myself; what type of postman doesn't know the area where they have to deliver? Something here isn't working and its now time that they solve it. Imagine the situation that my family and me are in, because unfortunately my husband is also on the dole. I please ask you to take my problem into account and inform our community in your next issue and pass this complaint to the town hall, so that these problems with the Post Office are sorted for once and for all. Thank you,Clara Town hall answer: This very case was answered by the Majoress herself at a public session of the Town Hall. The solution would be that Correos should improve all the services, which are now at the current Post Office at Gran Alacant (setting up new services to achieve that Gran Alacant has all services which are now given at Santa Pola). The Town Hall will, in exchange, set up a proper access from the road that reaches to Post Office roundabout, so as trucks can reach the building (for delivering). We know that the configuration of the streets, and their numbers, can be a problem for the postmen and postwomen, but this is a problem that Correos must solve itself, because the post service is its competence (not Town Hall’s competence). In order to get the problem solved Clara (and other people who are affected by this issue) must go to the Post Office and complain about this, and go to the Employment Office to explain the situation so a solution for them can be found.

Q: Traffic jams Good Morning, I would like to make a suggestion to the town hall of Santa Pola in relation to the sense of circulation of the street Monte de Santa Pola as I have tried on several occasions to speak with the mayor in this regard without any result.
It could be a great overflow car park for the market! There is another small area of land next to it, which the council may already own (beside the unfinished building development). Then, perhaps they would lay a decent pavement there too!
As we all know the existence of the street market at the mouth of the street causes serious traffic jams during the days of market, because the circulation of exit from the street join the incorporation of vehicles that leave it. But not only that, but during the working days school buses and the garbage truck hinder and delay the departure of vehicles that want to leave the street to go to their jobs. In my modest opinion the necessary "redundant useless curve" that occurs in the form of U to get out of the street and that excessively slows down the exit of vehicles. The added problem is that in case of medical emergency an ambulance would take centuries to leave the street in the days of market! My proposal is the following: Given that people tend to be in a hurry to leave the house rather than to return to it, it would be interesting to consider changing the direction of circulation so that the vehicles leave where BBVA is now. In this way the access to the market would be direct by the same Avda. Of Scandinavia (and even the output of it). Everyone would access the Scandinavia Avenue more quickly and the small delay in returning home produced would be unimportant then.
A separate issue - I notice that the area of land on the left from the end of Brisas Del Faro heading up towards El Faro is in need of tidying/shrub pruning & litter clearing. It really is disgraceful that people continue to ‘dump’ their garden waste & general litter up & down this area! They are so close to two sets of bins & the garden waste eco park!!
Thank you very much for your attention and congratulations for the magazine that allows us to collaborate in this neighbourhood. Greetings, Enrique Town hall answer: This detailed proposal, regarding to the traffic regulation and direction, has been transferred to the Traffic Department, which is within the Local Police. Q: Land for Sale Hi Lou & Ged, I’m just back in GA, I noticed this new sign across from the urbanisation, Brisas Del Faro. The area of land in question is not ‘prime’ as there would be limited views... I’d like to suggest that the council buy it.
Wishing you both health & happiness in 2018. Kind Regards, Helen Town hall answer: Regarding to the park issue, the Town Hall

may study the possibility of buying/owning some areas at GA in order to provide more services to the neighbourhood. However, the public administrations spend a lot of time in making this kind of actions possible. Related to the lack of tidiness and cleaning of the mentioned area, Urbaser, the enterprise which is in charge of the local cleaning has been warned about this, so as it can be solved as soon as possible.
BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS Q: Building Rubbish Why do people dump their building rubbish on the pavement by the bins. (see picture). This is not the place for it. The refuse lorry picks up our rubbish twice every day, but uses a truck that only pick up and empties the bins. It does not collect everything thrown on the ground beside the bin. Town Hall where should this be dumped?
Town hall answer: The building rubbish must be dumped by renting a proper container, which must be paid for by the constructors. In addition, a municipal license must be obtained in order to be able to occupy the street with this kind of containers. Q: Abandoned venture We printed photos a few years back of this new venture in Santa Pola, adjacent to the N332 on the way from Santa Pola to La Marina. It was built at considerable cost,
but already has fallen into a very sad and sorry state, as the pictures below show. Does the Town Hall know what went wrong? Town hall answer: The Municipal Gardens Department has been warned about this hot issue so as the reasons why this has become like the photos can be discovered and the best solution can be taken as soon as possible. Walking Football: Two more emails this month from players asking to join our Oldies walking football club. This now takes the numbers interested to 32. Most have holiday homes out here so are very unlikely to all play at the same time. This means that numbers vary from week to week.

PLAZA MAYOR EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.
A letter from Lucy Long, a volunteer from England
The following letter has been penned by Lucy Long, an English woman who kindly came to volunteer with our rescue centre for one month in November and December, 2017. "I’ve just finished my month of volunteering at Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre in Rojales, Spain, and I can say without any doubt that my experience has been exactly what I came here for. "I was completely heartbroken after losing my fiancé to cancer in February 2017 and I

was absolutely dreading Christmas without my fiancé. Then I heard about Easy Horse Care. I thought being away and helping the beautiful animals might help me. Lucy Long volunteering at Easy Horse Care "I can’t explain the peace these beautiful animals give ... just standing in the paddock with the hilarious donkeys or having a hug from Rosie the horse. She gives hugs and I’ve had a lot! It's something that just takes you away from everything that reality of life brings.

PLAZA MAYOR "This is not just a rescue centre. The animals here all have their own horrific story of neglect, suffering and abuse, and all they want to give back is love – and that’s exactly what I got. "Not everyone is an animal lover and I get that, but even if you’re not, just spend an hour here. I know it’ll turn into you staying for the day and then coming back the day after. "The sun has shone every day here while England has had snow – and you’ll get an experience you’ll never forget. I know I never will and I’m definitely coming back. "Please also consider donating. Sue and Rod run this place on donations alone. They are working tirelessly every single day, plus running the charity shops, to ensure these animals have a happy and loved life.
"Fudge now has a very special place in my heart, as do all the beautiful animals here. I have my favourites but it’s hard not to love all 109-plus animals here. Photos don’t do this absolutely wonderful, special place justice. I was so sad to leave that I cried when I left. With the money raised we have purchased new mats and rink numbers. January 2018 On Saturday 6th January as our first meeting of the new year we staged our annual Fun Day challenge. After meeting and enjoying coffee and cakes at Lounge D, more than thirty members took part in the challenge. The challenge involved scoring goals, target shooting, short mat bowling and more. Following two hours of bowling we returned to LoungeD for the presentation. Ron Jones won the event with a score of 22 points which was even more impressive as Ron only returned to Spain that morning. Second place was John Hunt with a very creditable 15 points. After the presentation club members went to the Belfry Restaurant where we had a very enjoyable buffet. Our thanks go to the LoungeD and the Belfry for making it such a successful day.

Pat Groves and her husband Brian were long time members of the Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club and supported the club mainly at social events. Brian died last September and in October Pat attended the club quiz when it started again after the summer. Unfortunately Pat had a fall that evening and injured her back. After being in pain for some weeks it was discovered that she needed an operation. She underwent this but complications have meant that she has lost feeling in both legs. After a lengthy stay in hospital Pat was moved to a physiotherapy clinic in San Vicente del Raspeig where she is currently. Options are being explored to get her transferred to Yorkshire to be near her son’s home. We wish Pat a speedy recovery and hope that she recovers the use of her legs in due course. CAMBRIDGE WEIGHT PLAN USED IN GROUND-BREAKING REMISSION TRIAL A landmark trial funded by Diabetes UK has shown that it is possible to put Type 2 diabetes into remission using an intensive low calorie formula diet-based weight management programme.
care. The programme included a 800kcal a day, low calorie, nutrient-complete formula diet supplied by Cambridge Weight Plan for three to five months, food reintroduction and long-term support to maintain weight loss.
The trial, called DiRECT (Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial), is a twoyear study aimed at finding an effective and accessible way to put Type 2 diabetes into remission. To do this the trial used the Counterweight Plus weight management programme whose low calorie formula diet products were supplied by Cambridge Weight Plan. The results from DiRECT show that almost half (45.6%) of all those who took part in the programme were in remission after 12 months. Nine out of ten participants who lost more than 15kg put their condition into remission and over half (57%) of those who lost 10 to 15kg achieved remission (along with a third (34%) who lost five to 10kg). Only 4% of the control group achieved remission. The first year findings of the study suggest that Type 2 diabetes remission is closely linked to significant weight loss. Of the 298 people who took part in the trial, half received standard diabetes care from their GP, whilst the other half received Counterweight Plus structured weight management programme within primary

Professor Anthony Leeds who is Medical Director of Cambridge Weight Plan said: “I’m very impressed by the evidence showing that large weight losses using formula diets can be achieved and maintained in people with diabetes and other conditions such as heart disease, and obstructive sleep apnoea. People who lose weight with formula diet programmes often have an improved sense of well-being soon after starting to lose weight and tend to stay on the programme because they feel better than when they were heavy. He added: “We know that big weight losses can reduce inflammation, and decrease

Chatter
Brexit Update In my first ‘Chatter’ column, dated August 2016, I explored the issues surrounding Brexit, after the British public voted to leave the European Union. I discussed the implications for Expats like me, living abroad, as my country of birth began the process of withdrawal. My view today, is no different to it was then. Although we don’t have the final plan in place, we are beginning to discover just how much our lives will change, once we leave. The 2016 referendum was the beginning of a process, that will see the United Kingdom once again forge, its own destiny in the World. Nothing much has changed so far, as the politicians and negotiators continue their divorce talks, each side trying to shape a future without one another. There has been a lot of talk, much misinformation and very little tangible data to analyse and assess. As a bystander to this process, I remain hopeful, despite the squabbling and one-upmanship playing out in the media. So where are we today? How far have we come and is there any light at the end of the European tunnel? Watching the news from home recently, top of the schedule, was an item about British Passports; a so called ‘radical idea,’ that when we leave the EU in 2019, the British passport will return to its traditional blue colour. To be perfectly honest, I was a little incensed, that this side show issue was dominating the bulletin I was watching. I really don’t care what colour my passport is; it is irrelevant to me. With all the controversy surrounding Brexit at the moment, this was a departure from the real issues at hand. This news item just fed voters nationalistic instincts, after Theresa May gave far more ground than Brexiteers
32
wanted; reaching the end of the first stage of negotiations, to withdraw from the EU. In any case the British Passport was never blue; the one I have in my drawer at home is well and truly black! Talking with Expats like me, holiday makers and those thinking about moving to this part of Spain has become a regular occurrence; everyone concerned about their future rights living in Europe. The reality is, we still have very few concrete answers to our growing list of concerns. It does seem likely however, most of us will be able to remain in our country of choice, without too much hindrance. This will of course depend on our legal status; whether or not we are resident. In October 2017, the Foreign Minister of Spain Alfonso Dastis said, “Over 17 million Brits come to Spain every year and many of them live here or retire here and we want to keep it that way, as much as possible.” A welcome statement from the Spanish Government; calming the fears of many. Even if Britain left the EU, without any formal agreement, Spain would guarantee the rights of those of us living here and “not disrupt” our daily lives. This was the biggest hint yet, that very little would change on the surface. Spain has the largest contingent of British Expats, living abroad. A third of those living here are aged 65 or over, so naturally Health Care is of major concern to British pensioners, living in Spain; currently enjoying free access to the Spanish health service. It wasn’t until December, when there was a breakthrough on citizens rights, during the end of the first stage of withdrawal talks; finally we had definitive answers, to our concerns. “…Rules for healthcare… will follow Regulation (EC) No 883/2004. Persons whose competent state is the UK and are in the EU27 on the specified date (and
THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 13TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.
vice versa) … continue to be eligible for healthcare reimbursement, as long as that stay, residence or treatment continues.” Importantly the ‘S1 Form System,’ will carry on post Brexit, guaranteeing free treatment for British pensioners; a necessity for all those anxious about the future costs of living in Europe. For Expats currently living in Spain, indeed any EU nation, who have obtained permanent residency, the future seems assured. British citizens should enjoy the same rights as other EU citizens; including access to health and social services, providing they follow the process, adopted in their European home. If you have a residence but are not a permanent resident and wish to apply, you need to start thinking about it now, before Britain’s date of departure from the EU; currently 29 March 2019. As we move closer to this date, it is likely many more applications for permanent residency will be made; time remains crucial, all of us need to make a choice about where we want our future to lie. Equally if you are a UK citizen, currently considering a move to Spain long term, you should contemplate accelerating your plans, so you do not miss the deadline in March 2019. With just over a year left all of us should stay one step ahead; don’t get caught out! With Expat rights confirmed, it is important to mention other details of the divorce bill, including most importantly the financial implications of our break from Europe. Theresa May initially offered to pay a twenty billion euro settlement figure; at the end of negotiations, it seems likely that will rise to approximately fifty billion euro; a marked increase. The Northern Irish frontier, which had become a stumbling block, has also been resolved. The Prime minister has made it clear there will be no ‘hard border,’ between Northern and Southern Ireland, allowing the continued free movement of goods and people
between the two countries. Lastly the Government has agreed to allow the European Courts of Justice an oversight role in relation to ‘citizen rights.’ In cases which are ambiguous, jurisdiction will remain in place until 2027. A lot has happened in the Brexit negotiations, since I last wrote about the implications for us a year and a half ago. Our lives will carry on in very much the same vein as they do now, however it is important to tie up loose ends and make sure we follow the legal framework in place to currently allow us to live and work in Spain. When I first moved to the Costa Blanca in January 2016, before the public voted, before the fighting started and before our destiny was sealed, I was determined to get my residencia as soon as I could, obtaining it on my Birthday in May 2016. My partner who is a non EU national, has also just received his Spanish residential status; a more complicated procedure than the one I had to follow, but necessary for us to enjoy an unhindered life, living in Gran Alacant. Most of us can breath a sigh of relief, as negotiations move on to the next stage, with talks centred around a trade deal with the EU. There will be other hurdles to jump, in the future, applications to fill in, or new cards to be issued, but as long as we remain legally entitled to stay here in our current guise, there shouldn’t be any long term problems. I made the choice to move to Spain, as have many of you; many more of you, reading this brief article, will also be considering making the move. Your dreams and aspirations should not change because of Brexit. Clearly there wont be mass deportations of British Expats, living on the Costa Blanca and we can finally sleep a little sounder at night, knowing that our future is secure, stable and a little less uncertain!

DRAMA IN A TEACUP Tommy huddled over his homework, protecting it from any onlookers. His only onlooker was his mum, but it was still very private. As part of his studies, he now underwent “cultural awareness”, which was intended to give himself and his classmates an insight into the life experience of others. At the age of nine, it was a bit overwhelming but he did enjoy hearing his friends relating their stories and cultural differences. Everyone seemed to have special events to celebrate during the year.
Easter was approaching and the task in the classroom was to encapsulate (he had to look that up) the ideas of Easter on a card that would be recognised by the rest of the class. The talk in the playground was about something quite different. Another event in the calendar seemed to be taking centre stage, and it appeared that this year, the target date was the same day as the beginning of the Easter thing. All the girls seemed to be particularly excited about it and they checked their mobile phones regularly for updates. Tommy didn’t have a mobile. Mum said it was an unnecessary distraction and that the budget (another check in the dictionary) wouldn’t stretch that far. Mobiles were banned in school, but those who could, seemed to ignore that particular rule. But the intense interest and giggling about the subject gave him an idea. He had deliberately messed up his first attempt at his Easter card and asked if he could start again. His teacher was very accommodating and gave him another blank card which he was to take home to complete. He had kept the original of course. At home, he had busied himself with the Easter card, complete with rolling eggs, a sort of human image on a big cloth and a man appearing out of a cave. Able to recover his earlier deliberate errors, it was now almost finished to his satisfaction and he had set it aside, but within easy reach if he needed it. He now worked on the other card, which he did not want his mum to see. He didn’t have a dad. He never had. The man, who he might have called dad, had disappeared before he was born. Mum never spoke about him and Tommy never knew if he had died, left home or might even be in

prison. It didn’t worry him too much at the moment, and anyway, he was not alone in his class having a single parent family so he did not feel particularly different. Mum was great. He knew she worked really hard to keep them in comfort in the home and his Gran came in to be with him when mum was working late. He even had the occasional treat of a small bar of chocolate which he and his mum shared. She would hide it somewhere in the house and he would have to look for it. Then he would hide it and she would search. They had played this simple game ever since he was very small. His mum had never met anyone else he could remember and he had recently heard his Gran say to her that she should find herself someone. Mum didn’t sound too interested. She said she was managing and wasn’t sure if she had the patience to cope with another man in the house. Tommy couldn’t work out if that was a compliment or not. She was now in the kitchen and he could hear the sound of cupboard doors opening and closing. She would be back in there later, making pancakes. He liked pancakes. The card was finished. It was simple but neat, and said all he wanted. He had watched as she had searched all the usual places in the lounge before she moved to the kitchen and he selected his school bag as the place to hide it. That would be the last place she would look. He put the card in the bag, on top of the chocolate bar. She came back into the lounge and gave him a quizzical look. He just sat with a well-practiced blank expression on his face and shrugged his shoulders, a little. She looked at his school bag and her eyes widened and a little smile appeared on her lips. Moving slowly over to the bag, she opened it slightly and the card was there, facing her. The large red outline of a heart on the front surrounding the word MUM, gave away its intended message and as she opened it, the simple phrase in Tommy’s handwriting said You Can Be My Valentine. Tommy watched her as she sat down on the sofa to read the card again, then he turned back to put the finishing touches to his Easter Card.

Mayka’s Kitchen Hello everyone here we are after all parties, drink and food still alive!!!
Monkfish Galicia Style
I’m so happy that many of you came to show me some of the recipes that you made for Christmas!! You made me very happy and this month’s special request I received is Monkfish. I love this fish and it’s very popular in the part of Spain I come from. So here we go, let’s make Monkfish Galicia style served with salsa de ajada. Hope you enjoy it, Mayka xxx
Ingredients Let’s Start! Slice the monkfish and marinate it with 1 clove of garlic, salt, parsley and olive oil. Let it rest for 30 minutes. Half an hour later, fill the casserole with cold water. Add the potatoes cut into slices, onion and salt and bring to boil. Cook for 6-7 minutes. The potatoes have to be a tad hard otherwise they go mushy when you continue to cook. Add the monkfish and cook for another 10 minutes approx. depending on the thickness of the fish. Meanwhile make the "ajada" - slice the rest of garlic and fry it in olive oil. As soon as the garlic gets a little colour remove the fry pan from the stove, add the paprika and mix well. Then add the ajada into the pot with the monkfish.

by Luke Martin - Jones After Laura from Gran Alacant Properties was contacted by the producers of the popular Channel 4 television series ‘A Place In The Sun,’ discussing Gran Alacant’s inclusion in the show, it was fantastic to see my home town highlighted this week. I have always been an avid follower of this show myself. It helped me make a decision, about moving to this area of Spain in the first place. John and Julie Lewis from Cheshire, were in the Southern Alicante region, looking for a holiday home; hoping to retire to this part of Spain in a few years. This was their first time buying a house together; a prospect they were looking forward to! Mr and Mrs Lewis were shown five properties, all very different in four distinct areas. The southern Alicante region has 62 blue flag beaches; pretty traditional tree lined squares, amazing views and 320 days sunshine a year. The outdoor life, this couple aspired to, would be on their very doorstep; making this region their preferred destination of choice. John and Julie had a budget of between 80,000 and 120,000 pounds; beginning their search for a property in Gran Alacant, where they viewed a two bedroom town
42
house on the urbanizacion Mediterraneo. The house had superb views overlooking El Clot de Galvany, its own parking space, only a fifteen minute walk from the beach; and on the market for 115’000€. On reflection, they both felt it was a little small for them, with a lack of natural light, so continued their search, moving fifteen minutes inland to Benijofar. John and Julie were impressed with the three bedroom house they viewed; more spacious, lighter and south facing; with an asking price of 110’500€. On the down side the house was not in a gated community and there was access to only on street parking. Property three was 95,000€ and situated in Los Montesinos, with stunning views of the salt lakes and a 9000 acre nature reserve. There are only 60 properties on the complex, where they viewed a three bedroom house with large roof terrace. As they discussed their general feelings about the search so far, it was clear Mr and Mrs Lewis preferred Gran Alacant, as an area to live in. Returning to their favourite location, they seemed content, viewing a two bedroom property, situated in an area

they liked. Two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a large pool area in the urbanisation Brisamar. The house was five minutes walk from a large choice of local amenities; all of this for 115 000€. The compromise, was space; this property was smaller than the others. The final property was a large detached villa in the quiet urbanisation of Montecid, close to Alicante City. Prices here are about half that, of Gran Alacant; three bedrooms, three bathrooms with extensive outside space for 129’950€. Presently there are no shops, bars or restaurants in the local vicinity, although it’s stunning location, overlooking picturesque hills and mountains a unique selling point. Mr and Mrs Lewis were Impressed by the villa, concluding it was just in the wrong area for them. Ending their search, John and Julie were clear about where they wanted to live. In their words, returning to Gran Alacant, was like returning home. This urbanisation of 10,000 people offered them the al fresco
lifestyle they craved, access to beaches and impressive scenery. It is more expensive than the other developments, but Gran Alacant is an area, where demand outstrips supply; it remains one of the most popular urbanisations along the Costa Blanca. Mr and Mrs Lewis decided to return home, adjust their finances and up their budget, so they could afford to buy the type of villa they want, in the area they favoured. Like all of us who live in Gran Alacant, they were captivated by this friendly, welcoming part of Spain. I moved here for the same, or very similar reasons; it offers me everything I need to enjoy, my new place in the sun.

The Reiki Room Harmonious Healing
with Jackie Canale
Hello readers, for those who don’t know me let me introduce myself, my name is Jackie Canale and I am a Holistic Therapist working in Gran Alacant, promoting holistic well-being wherever I can. Welcome to February! Most of you will now be getting over the January blues where we feel bad for over-indulgence and now on our new mindset to a healthier self. If you are anything like me I always feel completely bloated after the holidays and want to tape my mouth shut and hide for a few weeks into the new year. So, with this feeling comes the turning
point in all of us and we find ourselves reaching for the diet cookbooks or joining that slimming club or fitness class, on the search for our inner fabulousness. A great time to accelerate that boost in your positive changes by having a massage. Combining massage with aromatherapy is a preference of mine (being both a massage therapist and an aromatherapist) and by using essential oils like Bergamot, Lemon or Ginger to name a few, these oils have the added benefits of speeding up weight loss and switching the body to fat burning mode.
Massage therapy speeds up the blood circulation, encouraging your whole body to work properly whilst relaxing the muscles and easing any pain you may have. I personally recommend everyone should have a massage at least once a month to keep the body in flow. When you feel good on the inside, you radiate happiness. In the coming months I will be talking about different holistic treatments and their benefits, the healing benefits in essential oils, to the benefits of certain foods & supplements that you can bring to your own homes enabling you to chase away any ailments. With Valentines Day approaching why not buy your loved one a gift to remember! Please feel free to call, message or email me with any questions you may have, to book an appointment or to simply book a free 30 minute consultation to see what treatment is best for you. Out & About with Star & Ashlee The Clot de Galvany Hi , my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 9 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. Ashlee and I have attended many get togethers with friends in the picnic area of the Clot over the years and although I knew that there was some water and you could see some birds there, we had never actually done either of the two walking routes within the Clot. So one lovely Saturday in January we set off with some friends to see what we could find. The Clot de Galvany covers over 355 hectares (over 3.55 square kilometres) and was declared as a Nature Reserve in 2005. There are two different walking routes that you can take, Route 1 is shorter and takes you past a couple of bunkers and some viewing points and allows you to see the wildlife of the ponds from viewing/bird watching structures. Route 2 is longer and takes you further into the reserve and offers some magnificent views the higher you go. We started off and immediately noticed how quiet and peaceful it was, the route took us past the sand dunes and into areas with lots of different trees and shrubs. We were really amazed at how nice and serene the surroundings were. We saw some beautiful dragonflies and butterflies, most of whom flew around so fast that I couldn´t take any pictures, although luckily a white butterfly stopped on a flower, so I managed to take a quick picture. As we continued to walk we saw lots of old, twisted trees, and we even gave a few of them a hug. Evidence of rabbits

could be found everywhere, but it wasn´t until we were over halfway around the route
that we actually saw a couple hop by!! We stopped at a large area full of white shells before arriving at a bunker and viewing point. When we looked out from the viewing point we were shocked at how big the first “pond” was. We checked the map, thinking that we would be almost at the end of Route 1, only to discover that we actually weren´t even half way around!!!!
various species of ducks that were on the pond. The kids really enjoyed watching them diving or popping their heads under the water to get food, their colours were just stunning. It was a nice way to finish our first clot experience. We ended up spending 3 hours walking around the shortest route and now we have been once, we definitely want to go back but need to allow more time and take a lot more water to do Route 2. The Clot de Galvany really is an amazing place that
We carried on and the path became a little less obvious and took us through some trees. We saw some rabbits in the distance and were surprised to come across another large pond/marsh area with birds and enjoyed looking back at the bunker and viewing point we were previously at. It was really nice to see all of the different trees with the mountains in the distance. There was even a Christmas tree that stood out from the copper colours of the surrounding trees.

So don´t delay, pack plenty of water, throw on some comfortable walking boots/trainers and see what wildlife, flora and fauna awaits you in our local nature reserve.
Further on there was a bird watching/ observation hut looking over the middle pond and we stopped in another observation hut and spent some time watching all of the

It was formed in 1992 by a group of like-minded people and registered in Valencia as a charity with the number: 3463. It is also registered in the City Council of Torrevieja. SAT was founded in 1992, thanks to a group of people of all nationalities who saw the need to create a sanctuary for the abandoned dogs, that roamed the streets of Torrevieja. Nowadays, with its kennel in Dolores, it is still a multinational organization and a charity institution of the Valencian Community. Our goal is to avoid unnecessary suffering and find a

home for many of the abandoned dogs in the Costa Blanca area. We no longer only cover Torrevieja, but are asked for help in Murcia and other places more inland such as Pinoso and Sax. Luckily, there are now more places like us that shelter abandoned animals, so we can more easily take care of the immediate problems of the Vega Baja. We have a large number of volunteers who do almost anything, as long as our "guests" stay in Dolores is happy. There are those who walk the dogs, who pick up the poop, who wash them, who work in the store, who collect funds, ... In general everything that has to do with collaboration. If you can help us in any way, please call the kennel at 966 710 047 and they will put you in touch with the corresponding person. Remember that there is an answering machine, so follow the instructions that are indicated in the message, because the staff may be working around and not answer your call at that moment. I would like to congratulate Andy and Paul for their efforts, helping S.A.T. Animal Rescue. As someone who has volunteered myself in the past, I can not advocate this wonderful way, of giving back to the community you live in, enough. Too many people pass by an opportunity to help others, in favour of more lucrative recompense. You gain far more from volunteering than you might expect. Working with a team of like minded individuals, in a common cause is a fulfilling and valuable exercise; everyone should volunteer at sometime in their life; just as Andy and Paul have done. The building at the rescue centre looks fantastic! Well done guys! Luke If you have a similar story, you would like us to feature in the Gran Alacant Advertiser, please get in touch!

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
WOUND CARE Wound healing is sometimes a long process, so it’s important to give wounds a good complementary care at home. According to the kind of wound we are talking about, the whole process may take just 8 days (surgical wounds), or maybe 4 weeks. Surgical wounds are very easy to care: keeping them clean and stopping the animal from licking and scratching is normally enough. Elizabethan collars and tube shaped bandages are often used for this purpose. When dirt or hair get stuck to cutaneous stitches, a scab which retards the healing may eventually appear. Skin heals from the edge of the wound towards the centre. When the skin next to the edge is wet, dirty or inflamed, cannot “grow” properly, so the wound never gets closed completely. This is valid for every kind of wounds, either surgical or non surgical ones. Skin lesions produced by traumatisms, bites or high temperatures must be checked by a Vet urgently, if they are deep or affecting a huge area. If it’s impossible for us to take the animal to the Vet practice urgently, there are some things we can do meanwhile: • Take some pictures of the wound before doing anything. This is normally useful for the Vet. • Clean and cover the wound. “Homemade cleaning” must be done just with water for avoiding complications. Using antiseptics or antibiotics in a wrong way may make things go worse. Wounds must be cleaned from the edge. In most cases you don’t even need to touch it; just squirting water on it is enough. Then
82
you can dry the wound with some paper or tissue (not cotton wool, because it may leave some fibre in the wound), and finally cover it with some gauze or a clean tissue, which should be a bit wet, for stopping it to get literally glued to the wound, which would damage skin and tissues when removed. So, keeping the wound clean and covered will help later the Vet to treat it. After the professional check, all we have to do is to follow the Vet instructions about changing regularly the tissues and bandages, applying ointments, etc. In case of specially serious wounds or noncooperating patients, the daily treatments must be performed at the practice, even under sedation. When the Vet decides not to cover a wound, maybe because it’s in a difficult location (chin, for example), or maybe because the patient doesn’t accept the bandage, it makes absolutely necessary to be very strict with the cleaning. If we have some other animals at home, we must stop them to lick the wound (trying to clean each other wounds is a very common instinct in dogs). Flies may lay eggs in an uncovered and dirty wound in a matter of minutes, because they detect the smell of pus and other secretions very quickly, so, for all these reasons, wounds must be kept always clean.

A young woman started work in a small English village chemist shop. She was very shy about having to sell condoms to the public. The chemist was going on holiday for a couple of days, and he asked if she would be willing to run the shop on her own. She had to confide in him her worries about selling condoms. "Look” he said, “my regular customers don’t ask for condoms, they either ask for a 310 (small), a 320 (medium) or a 330 (large), the word 'condom' is never mentioned.” The first day was fine, but on the second day a large black guy came into the shop, put out his hand and said “350 please". The girl panicked. She phoned the chemist on his mobile and told him of her predicament. “Go back in and check if he has a bucket hanging between his legs,” her boss told her. She peeped through the door and saw the bucket hanging between the guy's legs. “Yes!” She shouted down the phone, “he’s got one hanging there! ”The boss replied, “ Well, go back in there and give him £3.50…... He’s the window cleaner.”

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
MOUSTACHED WARBLER of these about in our area, they are denizens of the reedbeds, and their stronghold is the El Hondo reserve at Elche, where they will be coming into song around this time and should be easy to see.
It can be a frustrating business at times, this birdwatching. One of the worst things you can hear when entering a hide on the lookout for a particular species is “Oh, there was one here just five minutes ago, but it's gone now.” I've lost count of how many times I've heard that, the annoyance of hearing it is only slightly assuaged by the fact that I've probably said it to other people as well. I think I've seen most of the species that you would expect to find in our area of the Costa Blanca, but there are one or two which continue to elude me. These are known as “Bogey Birds” - the ones which everyone else has seen, but you haven't. It's not through want of trying, the little blighters just won't show themselves to you. I've been to all the correct places at the correct time of year, I know they are there but they are probably hiding in the undergrowth having a giggle to themselves. In fact I'm thinking of starting a list of all the birds I haven't seen, but which have seen me. A case in point happened just a few weeks ago. Elaine Warnock of the Costa Blanca Bird Club kindly sent me the attached photo, which is of a bird called a Moustached Warbler. There are several

What is really annoying (to me) is that Elaine didn't have to go to El Hondo to get this shot, the bird was at the main hide in the Clot by the big pool, a place where I have spent many hours. Unfortunately a medical problem means that I am stuck in Aberdeen, otherwise I would have jumped on the next Ryanair to come and see this bird – I can almost guarantee that by the time the doctors have repaired me, the Moustached Warbler will have done its disappearing act again. This bird is resident in our area, and is present all year round. It finds plenty of insect food in the reeds, and has a song which is similar to the scratchy song of the much commoner Reed Warbler, but throws a few extended whistling phrases to help you differentiate it. It is not found in the UK, in fact this species was recently removed from the British List as previous sightings were adjudged to have been the similar but more common Sedge Warbler. My thanks again to Elaine for her permission to use this photo. I'm still jealous though... You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
