We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month Hi everybody! This month you can enjoy so many different activities in Costa Blanca. It is impossible to describe them all, however this could be a good sample. In Santa Pola there is a cultural programme with plenty of activities to suit all tastes. You can find it on tourisms web site: www.turismosantapola.es Also every day and in every little corner on the Costa Blanca you can enjoy a fiesta or a parade in different villages or towns, main parades of Moors and Christians in Aspe 7th to 10th, Cocentaina, Elche 9th to 12th, Verger, Castell de Castells, Benilloba 14th to 18th, Xixona 22nd to 25th and Camp de Mirra 22nd to 26th. Also really special activities like “Misterio de Elche” Cultural World Heritage Event 11th to 15th and “Nit de l’Alba” on the 13th a fantastic display of fire works in Elche, not less important and impressive “Castell de L’Olla”, on 6th in Altea a beautiful combination with fire works and music, just to have an idea there will be burnt more than seven thousand kilos of powder. The first week in September will be the start of the local fiestas, 31st August, the inauguration, opening speech, 1st and 2nd the mock battles, conquer and reconquer of the Castle and 3rd of September, something not to be missed, the main parade of Moors and Christians. Bye bye for now. Hello Everyone, Well, the heat certainly came early as predicted! It’s great to see the beach, the bars and restaurants filling up. There are lots of events during August all around Gran Alacant and Santa Pola including fireworks so please look in the magazine for all the events. Also, if you have pets please take care they are easily scared. I wonder if any of you managed to be caught on the google street car that was around Gran Alacant?! Guess what? They got me! I was right behind their car on Avda Noruega and I gave them a wave, so I will have to wait and see if I made it on the updated google earth which was over 10 years old and Gran Alacant was just a few urbanizations with a few houses here and there - what difference ten years on!!! Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 26 and Casper on page 80

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 13TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.
We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Selfish dog owners On a recent walk with my wife and her cousin, we were absolutely disgusted at the selfishness and ignorance of dog owners. We walked from the substation on Escandinavia to join the gravel track to Santa Pola behind the Life Resort. Instead of enjoying the scenery around us we had to watch every step we took as the path is now a canine cesspit.
of dog faeces we witnessed on our last visit. Janice
The dog mess is disgusting and surrounded by flies etc and we cannot understand how the dog owners can be so oblivious to the mess their animals make (or they couldn't care less). My dog has to do its business so sod everyone else seems to be their attitude. Expect me to pick it up - don't be stupid!! That is what they think.
There are penalty fines, which are being imposed to dog owners who don’t remove the faeces. However, there are not enough policemen available to prevent all the cases. Nevertheless, with those awareness campaigns, these penalty fines will increase because there will be more vigilance about this issue.
Altomar 1 is a haven for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Some are well trained and hardly ever bark others are allowed to bark, howl and yap at any time and sometimes all the time. Quiet time only applies to humans not mutts. Can these people not control their dogs? If you cannot clean up after your dogs or train them to behave DONT OWN ONE!!! Regards, Jim Altomar 1
Q: Cat Problem: Good morning both. I'm afraid the situation with the cats next door is now worse than ever. We are currently in Spain & the smell from them is absolutely awful. The police have made another visit ( Sod's law, we weren't here). The owner told them she has " four cats") this is a lie. They did not enter the property. They've now told our president they " can't do any more". This is in contradiction to their line to me that once three visits were made, animals were removed. All of the neighbours are totally frustrated at the lack of action.
Q: Dog Wardens We know there has been mention in previous GA Advertiser about the dog faeces problems all over Gran Alacant we feel a more pro-active approach is needed, as the message is not being heeded by a number of dog owners. Firstly signage is required showing penalty fines if caught; also raise the subject with the police. If this does not work finally dog wardens who would be self financing with the fines which should be considerable due to the amount
Town hall answer: Regarding this hot issue, there is a huge problem related to the dog owner’s politeness. Several awareness campaigns are being prepared by Town Council in order to try to solve this problem, but people’s co-operation is needed.
We are desperate for help as it's ruining our time here. Every time our neighbour opens her door the smell is disgusting. We can't even eat on our patio. We feel a visit from the Sanitary Dept is appropriate? Are you please able to help us? We really don't know who else to turn

to. Many thanks, Sean Town hall answer: The Sanity Department has asked the judge for an authorisation in order to enter the property and see the problem there. At this moment, we are waiting for this permission. Q: Zebra Crossing: Me, and many others here in Monte y Mar, Aqua Marina and Nova Beach have a very serious problem: on our way to the beach we are, every day, in risk of an accident. We have to pass the road downhill to get to the beach. But, there are nowhere walkways, marked with white stripes, where we can pass. And, when we try to cross the road, the cars use their horns to intimidate us. They are real crazy!!! I am sure, one day there will happen a serious accident and the closer we get to July and August the worse it will get. Why don't the town hall, immediately, make one, for example outside Nova Beach? Thank you for understanding. Best regards, Per (from Denmark) Q: Traffic on Calle Malta: Hi Ged and Lou, I live on the new Calle Malta .Its a narrow road with a blind bend at the top. Now building complete on this street. I’ve noticed vans, large lorries passing at great speeds. I am sure there's going to be an accident soon. The adjoining street is also narrow, this then meets where the substation is. Are there any plans to make these two narrow streets one way, as the streets alongside are double the width and have set areas for parking too. Hopefully they will see the problem on the bend. Only yesterday I was walking down the road and a van mounted pavement. It's just such a narrow road compared with the others around the area. Regards Liz Town hall answer: Both requests have been transferred to the Traffic Department, so as they can solve these problems as soon as possible. However, car, truck and van drivers have to follow the traffic signs and watch out while driving because no one wants an accident to happen.

Q: Rubbish 1 The area by the train stop number 12 at the top of Av D'Escandinavia is disgusting there is rubbish everywhere on the ground and everywhere else what visitors to the area must think when they walk pass or are waiting for a train they must think what a dive it is. So could you ask the council to take a look and do something about it? Q: Rubbish 2 Hi Ged & Lou, hope you are well . We have just returned from a 6 weeks tour & I see yet another letter of complaint about how untidy Gran Alacant is looking. It seems a common topic talking to people in G/A, maybe the counsel should have an open meeting with the residents of G/A in English as well as Spanish .AT least we could demand answers instead of their pre set answer "The responsibility of this is the enterprise in charge of the municipal cleaning,Urbaser." Its about time as I have pointed out before, surely the responsibility for keeping G/A clean is the counsels. They appoint the cleaners Urbaser they should ensure they are doing the job they are paid for, which they obviously not doing. They should have employed enough people to do the job in the first place, summer is nearly over!!! Take for example the bins half way down Av. Carabassi by the cross roads. It’s absolute disgrace people just throw rubbish around the bins rather than in the half empty bins. Lovely for the rats. This always get worse at holiday times when outsiders arrive clearing old furniture & general rubbish from their holiday homes & dumping it anywhere around the bins, sometime even spreading on the pedestrian crossing & the road too. It seems to be left like that for several days. I do feel sorry for the people who live opposite the bins it a real eyesore & a health hazard!
THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 13TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.
The council & police need to discuss a way to catch the dumpers, ie video cams or plain clothes police parking nearby & arresting anyone dumping rubbish around the bins. They will obviously say its too expensive to take these steps, not if they fine each person arrested 1000euros. This will pay for the surveillance & hopefully educate people to live like human beings not rats.
Town hall answer: The company in charge of the cleaning in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant, goes to Gran Alacant on Tuesdays and Thursdays in order to collect large items from the bins. Please call 96 669 39 55 or to 900 103 704 (they both are free) and inform URBASER so they can pick up all those items from the rubbish bins.
Mind you they still have not even attempted to remove the rubbish beyond Calle Malta I have complained about for over 2 years now. Can you please ask them why they just ignored these complaints? Also the bad & worsening road surface down Calle Malta over 5 years since my first complain, obviously they do not give a damn about Gran Alacant. Sorry, its a long letter but maybe if the counsel listened & acted we would maybe right a letter of thanks. Regards Bill
Q: Gran Alacant New Sign: The new Gran Alacant sign is now up and how confusing it will be for anyone seeing it for the first time, as it says in big letters SANTA POLA and below Gran Alacant. Anyone driving for the first time from the airport to Santa Pola will come off at Gran Alacant, and anyone looking for Gran Alacant will probably drive past without seeing the small letters and drive to Santa Pola. The iconic thing about Gran Alacant is the beach so why isn't there a picture of that instead of the lighthouse, so come on Santa Pola council sort our sign out to reflect Gran Alacant and not Santa Pola. Regards Phil Town hall answer: Regarding to this issue, Gran Alacant is a part of Santa Pola, so the name of Santa Pola must be (this is a legal procedure) at any sign. Related to the lighthouse picture, instead of the beach, this is a decision which has been made by all the politic parties at Town Council (those which are in charge of the government), because the lighthouse and paragliders are two very good and proper pictures which can describe Gran Alacant, and which can attract more tourists (in addition to the tourism which come to Gran Alacant and Santa Pola in order to enjoy our beaches). advertiser. There are some 6 portable toilets along the walk from Carabassi to Arenales. These are cleaned early every morning. As he says some cafés have portable toilets. Other cafés have indoor facilities, which for the price of a bottle of water can be used. The ones I counted are along the front, not on the beach, but all within easy walking distance. I would have thought this more then enough. Judith
It is nice to think that the Town Hall may have taken notice of last months article and picture of all of the weeds on a section of Gran Alacant. These weeds must be a fire risk with so many houses close by. The picture shows the workmen clearing back. Why not clear some of it on a regular basis so it does not get so bad.
Barry’s bits of news:
Well, we asked for a new sign, and we got it!!!! Would have been nice to have been signed, Gran Alacant in big and part of Santa Pola in small. Now we know where we stand. Any holidaymakers looking for Santa Pola are now likely to end up on Gran Alacant. *********** Q: Evening Market We have heard that there is to be an evening market on Gran Alacant. Is this true? Town hall Answer: For now, I do not have this information. The request for more information about this evening market has been made to Commerce Department in order to inform as soon as possible. *********** A chance to see Spain’s international football team play at THE RICO Pérez stadium in Alicante when they will host the Spain-Albania 2018 World Cup qualifier on October 6. *********** We have a friend who needs a long-term rental. Preferably down the hill. Three bedrooms or 2 bedrooms plus under-build. Email: laneinspain@hotmail.com

*********** We will soon get to the Elche hospital even quicker from Gran Alacant when the long straight road from Santa Pole becomes a dual carriageway. A start should be made later this year and completion is expected by the summer of 2019. *********** Walking football update. We have eight volunteers and five others pending. Anyone else will be made welcome. The task now is to get us all together on the same day at the same time. *********** You may wonder what happened to our former local councillor of Gran Alacant. She is the president of the PP Party in Santa Pola .
Loreto still lives on Gran Alacant and is working hard within the PP Party. Spending much time in Alicante and Madrid. She is now the new president of PP Santapolero, based at the Santa Pola Town Hall where she presented a new team to take over the party. A team that combines youth

and experience, which has among other objectives to recover the Mayor's Office in 2019.
Be careful driving around Santa Pola as some one-way streets have been turned around to go in the opposite direction.
Julio Miguel Baeza will be the general secretary, Joaquín De la Morena, coordinator, and deputy secretaries: Antonio Picó, Trini Ortiz, Antonio Jose Sánchez, Fco. Javier Plaza, Verónica Cerezo, Mati Almela and Nely Baile.
*********** OLD LOS ARENALES HOTEL SITE
*********** Following on from Star and Ashleys report in last months magazine, about their trip over to Tabarca, by coincidence Sandra and myself with friends had a night booked in a hotel on the island last month, and what a lovely experience it was. Have enclosed a few pictures. The hotel we stayed at, The Boutique Hotel. has info on their website. ***********
Opinion shows that the works were illegal. The government team of the City of Elche has ordered that the demolition of works was executed without authorization and imposed a fine of almost 80,000 euros. It looks like another summer with this eye sore. The reconstruction works violated the Costas law. The municipal government of Elche demands the immediate demolition of all the works since it has been proved that a renovation of the hotel was not being carried out, but a demolition and new construction of the building. And so it goes on and on and on. *********** Holidaymakers be careful. The police are looking out for you for drink driving and committing driving offences. They have already taken over 600,000 euro from us this year in driving fines and for businesses without licenses.. *********** As this is August the roads will be very busy, so holidaymaker drivers take care. Drivers out here are atrocious. Last month we were approaching a roundabout and got into the right hand lane to come off at the second exit. A driver came to the roundabout on my left, in the left hand lane, ready you would think to turn left to go to the third exit. When the traffic on the roundabout was clear, we moved off. The other driver shot straight across the front of my car to turn right. Luckily we missed each other. Be ready for anything, keep your wits about you. Pam Hardy from Zest and her friends and fellow fund raisers Sharon and Mandy (from Chasers) together with a pretend cheque for €880 Euros. They raised this during spring from selling craft items and holding fund raising events at Zest in aid of Help for Heroes. This equates to £800 which has already been paid to the charity.

PLAZA MAYOR EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.
SPANISH SANCTUARY RESCUES 140TH EQUINE, PRAISES LOCAL POLICE FOR SWIFT ACTION Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre has applauded Almoradí police officers for their prompt action in rescuing a young donkey stallion found abandoned on the city’s streets last week. “We can't praise Almoradí police enough for acting swiftly yet again to save this animal,” said Easy Horse Care co-founder Sue Weeding. “Their quick action is evidence that our work to build relationships with local authorities and improve animal welfare practices here in Spain is slowly but surely paying off.”
Rescued on July 7, the donkey has no identification tags and his history is therefore unknown. “We believe he's quite young, he's very hungry and he has cruel scarring across his nose from wearing a too-tight halter for far too long,” Sue said. “We do know that many owners often don't want stallions because they can't do anything with them. We suspect he's been tied up all his life for this reason – hence the scarring on his nose – and then simply dumped to get rid of him.” Under the centre’s responsible equine ownership policy, the donkey, which has been named César, will be castrated as soon as weather cools enough to allow the operation to be conducted safely. Currently, the summer heat means the risk of fly-borne infection is too high. César is the 140th equine saved by the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre since 2008, with Sue and Rod Weeding currently caring for 106 horses, ponies and donkeys at their Rojales sanctuary. The latest rescue came as Rod finished digging the trench for the next section of a 218-metre secure boundary wall being built to protect the rescued animals following a spate of break-ins at the sanctuary. Rod, aged 68, was forced to dig the knee-deep trench by hand after the centre’s aging digger broke down.

GASP THEATRE GROUP A GASP Melodrama Tears ran down the dark furrows in her cheeks as the elderly woman sat low in her favourite chair. She wore a plain black dress and a black, white frilled mantilla in the local tradition of those recently widowed. She sighed as she wondered how she might manage now that her husband has died. Their son had been killed in the army, when he was only eighteen and their daughter was now married and lived far away. As she grieved, the Landlord pushed his way into her home and announced; “My dear how sad that your husband has passed and now leaves you alone in your humble house. Well, the truth is that it is MY humble house. You see he had a debt to me for repairs to the roof, so the roof over your head, is mine; unless there is something valuable in the house in exchange”. She told him that there was nothing. Her husband had worked in the blacksmiths forge making horseshoes until his health failed and he went to the silk mill. He started as a silk weaver but later went long journeys to the east to collect the silk. He had left her nothing. The landlord insisted. “He must have left something of value from the forge, in case of dire times, all people do”. She told him that the only thing her husband had left was the horseshoe on the front door, for luck. “Ah Ha, that must be it” he shouted, “It must be valuable. I will melt it down; you can have your house”. As he swept out the door with a flourish, he met a mourner entering the house. “Thank you sir” she offered, “I am sure the dear lady will welcome your exchange”.

The widow gasped in horror. “That was the only thing I have to remind me of my husband, how can he take it”? The woman replied, “This house will remind you of him every day. I will bear witness to the magistrate of your landlord’s words and you will be forever safe in this house”. The widow looked at the plainly dressed woman who’s face was partly hidden by the mourning veil. “Who are you”, the widow said, “I saw you at the funeral but you are not familiar”. The woman replied in a calming voice; “Do not despair my dear, I am sure the horseshoe is just that, a bent piece of iron. Your husband was a fine man and would not have left you destitute. Is there nothing else he left for you, a box or a letter perhaps?” The widow said they were too poor for gifts; the only thing he gave her was the mantilla she wore. He made it when he was in the mill and had told her to wear it at his funeral. They had smiled about it. He had woven the fringe himself from fine white silk threads he had collected on his journeys to the east. The woman looked at the fringe of the mantilla and raised a smile. “As I thought”, she said, “This is no fine silk, but fine silver thread woven into your mantilla. Your husband has indeed left you something to remind you of him”. The widow cried, “Oh my dear husband you are gone but will never be forgotten”. As the woman stood before the widow and lifted he veil she said; “Neither forgotten by you nor by me; my dearest Mother.” Immerse yourself in the full melodramatic experience and see it on Stage with GASP

GASP THEATRE GROUP WHO IS WHO IN GASP David Ashley. Born in Blackpool in 1942, David began working in amateur theatre in 1964 and spent 40 years with Oldbury Rep, Birmingham. Began directing musicals in 1997 for Abingdon Operatic Society and Bourneville Musical Theatre in Birmingham. Has directed and/or appeared in every GASP production to date. David finds that the only way to remember his lines, is to rehearse on stage and use the development of the character to fix the words to the business of acting. Christine Lombardy. A Parisienne, settled in Spain for 45 years with a long and wide experience on stage, both singing and acting. She has been in GASP from its inception and English is only one of five languages she speaks fluently. Christine recently appeared as “Wardrobe” in Beauty and The Beast, in a spectacular production in Orihuela. Tony Skinner. He has been involved in “am dram” for over 20 years during which time he has appeared in many roles from “serious” plays through light comedy to pantomime. Tony likes to have less than 100 lines to learn. He is much better than that, of course.
Terry Lacey. Born in Dundee in the first half of the last century, Terry joined his first theatre group at the age of 18. Although originally interested in back stage work, he has successfully “trod the boards” on many occasions. His appearances for GASP include “Pack of Lies”, “Breath of Spring” and “Habeas Corpus”. He finds the iPod (yes iPod) a useful tool in helping with the repetition of lines. Lucía García Valcárcel. Lucía is a professional translator and since 2000, an amateur actress, performer, singer and belly dancer. As well as being a member of GASP Theatre, she is also a member of Tardis Teatro amateur theatre. Lucia has appeared in “Pack of Lies”, “Just the Ticket” and many of our short plays and sketches, perhaps most famously, “Spanish Red Tape” and “Murder in the Red Barn” where she “died” several times in the most effective Melodramatic style

GASP THEATRE GROUP Esther Harding. Originally from Madrid, Esther went to England on a 3 month course to improve her English and came back to Spain 14 years later with a nursing diploma, and an English husband. Esther first appeared with GASP in “Pack of Lies” and has appeared in nearly every production since then, including an evening of sketched, in English and Spanish in the Casa de la Cultura in Santa Pola. Esther just seems to remember lines, with a lot of help from her husband, Duncan. Liz Messent. Liz was involved in amateur dramatics in the UK before she moved to Spain. She seems to have little difficulty in remembering her lines, and the lines of others, a real boon when things go a bit awry on stage (Never happens!!)
Penny Rooke. Penny first performed with GASP in Habeas Corpus, Wife Required and The Balancing Act. Since then she has taken major roles in many of our performances including our evening of Melodramas. Penny has managed to learn her parts in performances while travelling the world, or while at her other abode in the UK. Chris Rooke. Chris has appeared in many of the Group’s efforts including our original Habeas Corpus and as the evil villain in “Murder in the Red Barn” He has also directed a few of our plays and has written several pieces which we have performed.
We all started for the fun of it. Obviously with no experience but with the encouragement of others, we overcame the initial fear of the stage and now share the fun with our audience. If you have been inspired to think “I could do that”, we are always happy to welcome new members, of ALL NATIONALITIES.

Chatter Housing
On June 14th 2017, a fire broke out at the 24 story, Grenfell Tower in London. More shocking news from back home; heartbreaking images, tragic loss of life and the beginning of a scandal, highlighting corruption and cost cutting, at the expense of peoples lives. So far 80 people have been confirmed as missing or dead; that total is likely to rise, as fire fighters concluded their search, of the ruined tower; a monument, to all that was wrong with housing construction of the past. Grenfell Tower, has brought government failings to the attention of us all. Not only Health and safety shortcomings, but also the lack of reasonably priced accommodation, poor standards and shocking inadequacies. Housing, the cost of buying or renting a home and the lack of affordable properties, are big issues in Britain. Ever since I can remember, there has always been problems surrounding supply and demand, especially where I used to live, on the south coast of England. The UK has consistently under built homes, since Margaret Thatcher became Prime minister in 1979. Council houses were sold off to tenants, becoming home owners for the first time in their lives, lifting people out of a life time of renting, allowing them to finally own a property. Britain had shifted, from a country of renters, to that of home owners, in a very short space of time. Margaret Thatchers flagship policy was a success, at least on the surface. Sadly the money produced from the sale of social housing, could not be directly ploughed back, into building more of the same. By the time Britain had passed the millennium, the housing shortage was acute and getting worse!
40
The average cost of buying a property in the UK, as of 2017, is a staggering £217,502. a lot of hard earned cash by anyone’s standards. In the two years before I moved to Spain, I was renting a house at nearly £1000 a month; that was before I accounted for bills. The cost of housing in Britain remains out of control; if you want to buy a property, you are looking at borrowing, nearly ten times the average yearly wage; out of the pocket of most people. There were many reasons for relocating to Spain; the cost of housing was just one; a very important part of our decision. 60% of Spain’s housing stock, is worth less than 200,000€ per property sold; a huge difference to that of the UK. I had no idea what to expect, when I moved to Gran Alacant; choosing a property in Calle Canarias 10. I was astounded by the price, to rent a two bedroom town house, with roof top solarium and views to die for; 450€ a month. A similar property in the UK, would be double that and more. On the surface, everything looked rosy; the house appeared perfect and it was a great start to a new life in Spain. Two weeks ago; I was talking to a neighbour, who, looked exasperated. They had returned here for the summer, starting to clean, after the awful winter we had in Spain; the subject turned to housing. Property in Spain is a lot cheaper than the UK; you can purchase a lovely two bedroom apartment in Gran Alacant, for 70,000€, even cheaper else where. During the housing boom, which ended in 2008, Spain built many homes, outstripping demand. When prices collapsed, a huge glut of property was left behind; although the market has recovered now. After the crash, Spanish homes could be picked up for massively reduced prices. Even with the recovering house market, values are no where near, what they are currently, in

the UK. When one considers the low cost of living also, the Spanish seem to have a good deal. Of course nothing is quite as it seems. Until you actually live somewhere for a period of time, you really don’t see the reality, which isn’t as good as it appears to the novice buyer or renter, relocating to the Costa Blanca. Property in Spain, is very different to that in the UK; they are certainly not up to British standards of quality, mainly built out of concrete, rather than traditional brick, used back home. There is very little insulation or ventilation in the houses; windows are generally not double glazed and there is no central heating. If I look around my current home, I can see the small niggling things, that I moan about on a regular basis; the lack of plug points and storage; the tiny kitchen and little outside space I am moaning for the sake of it really; when one makes the decision to move abroad, packing up ones goods and chattels and ending up somewhere completely different, one has to adapt to a new way of life; Spain has been a culture shock for me, in all respects. Before I made the move, I believed the biggest obstacle I would have to cross, would be the language barrier; nineteen months later, there are far more important hurdles to overcome; all part of the process of starting a new life. We have all heard the term, ‘Whinging Pom;’ the British love to complain about everything that is different. When we move abroad, as Expats, we tend to remain part of an English community, partaking in very British activities, consuming British beer and eating British products; that isn’t going to change any time soon; Spain is Spain and does things very differently. We are moving for the things, Britain doesn’t have, cheap cost of living being one; importantly we need to embrace all aspects of Spanish life.
The houses are smaller; they were never built to withstand all year round occupation, by people like me. Gran Alacant is an urbanization on the Costa Blanca, that was always designed to cater for second home owners; of which there are plenty, visiting as many times a year as they can. As holiday homes, less is more; one certainly doesn’t want to spend time cleaning, when one should be enjoying Spanish life. Generally, how much space does one really need when on vacation? The Spanish lifestyle is also very different; the majority of ones time is spent outdoors, enjoying the fabulous weather, this area has to offer; the reason most people move or holiday here in the first place. If you relocate to a place like Gran Alacant or the many similar developments up and down the Costa Blanca, you have to embrace the changes that come with it. Respect your new outlook and accept that the home you now live in, will not be the same as the one you left behind. Property standards and prices, vary from country to country. I have been querulous about the house I live in; I have been amazed at the views from my sitting room window; I have been angry about the rain flooding my home; I have been astonished by the low rent I pay and I have been grateful that I made the choice to move away from the UK, even if I don’t always show that. On balance, the home I have in Spain, is far better than the one I left behind. My costs and utilities are a fraction of what they were and I finally enjoy a standard of living that is far more agreeable at my time of life. If you have just moved to Gran Alacant, you will find things very different, once you get passed the initial shock, adapt and enjoy, accept and adopt; eventually, you like me, will be happy to call this small enclave, on the Costa Blanca, home!

XXII TRAVESIA A NADO, TABARCA – SANTA POLA (XXII Open water swim, Tabarca – Santa Pola) Sunday 9th July 2017
The more I visit Gran Alacant the more I am amazed at the diverse sporting opportunities made available to the public, whether it is ad-hoc running, biking, hiking, surfing, etc, the various sporting clubs or, the whole range of activities organised by the Town Hall of Santa Pola, with the support of the various sporting clubs in the area. Sunday 9th July saw the 22nd hosting of the annual swim between Tabarca and Santa Pola which is now generally regarded as the best open water swim in Spain and one of the best 100 in the world. The crossing is 5900 metres as the crow flies from Tabarca to Varadero beach, but currents and wind mean the 1417 swimmers will swim a lot further. The winner of this year’s event was
Haigor Aranguren Fuertes, who finished in 1 hour, 20 minutes and 30 seconds, having out sprinted another competitor in the last 100 metres. The first female to finish was Eliana Krist Sotelo Reynoso in an equally impressive time of 1 hour, 35 minutes and 22 seconds. One exhausted female competitor collapsed at the finish line and was taken away on a stretcher to the huge applause of the supporting crowd. Of the 1417 competitors, not all of whom finished, but all are well, there were 12 other nationalities represented other than Spain; Russia, UAE, USA, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Mexico, UK, Norway, Switzerland and Sweden. There were competitors from Gran Alacant, but numbers are not yet available.

The winner o f Sunday started at 05.40 in Santa Pola with the collection of race numbers. Between 06.00-06.40 the swimmers were transported to Tabarca, followed at 06.50 by family and friends to watch them start. The race started at 07.30 with the first swimmers reaching Varadero within 1.5 hours. The presentation of prizes was at 11.30 on Varadero Beach. They say, “Behind every great man is a great woman”, well the same is true for this event. Behind every great event is a great organisation, and the organisers of this event need special mention. These are not highly paid “events organisers”, but a bunch of unpaid volunteers, motivated solely on making this event one of the best in the country. I heard of some of the
the 2017
issues arising during the lead up to the event, one of which is worthy of an article in its own right, so agonisingly fraught with frustration and missed deadlines. That these volunteers persevered in the face of the problems is testament to their unflinching desire to make things work – for you. The Club Natacion Alone was supported by the Town Hall and a large number of sponsors to bring this event to Santa Pola. If you are interested in participating next year registrations open in February 2018, but be warned, the maximum number of participants is limited to 1400 swimmers and is always over subscribed. The race will take place in July 2018, so please go along and support the swimmers and organisers. Geoff Young

Gran Alacant to Santa Pola Town Centre Walk Thank you Dorothy for sending us this delightful walk on a fine day! Another delightful walk! Walking shoes/trainers/sandals should be worn although generally it is a smooth track/road! It takes 1-1½ hours to reach Santa Pola. From near the top of Avda Escandinavia, just past the new walkway to the paragliders’ launch site, turn right up a track there. At the signpost turn right, walk the short distance to the next signpost then turn left. Follow this path across the countryside and enjoy the panoramic views as they emerge! In approx. 20 mins you will reach the long and straight, tarred road. Turn right and walk down to the next signpost and turn left. (There is a car parking area here.) Follow the road to a junction where the road veers round to the right, approx. 10 mins. This is the old road to the lighthouse. There are one or two information boards on this road with details of some of the history of the area. Straight ahead is an area known as ‘Foia Roja’, No 29 on map. It is worth the short detour to see the red and rich soil colours here.
Continue your walk to Santa Pola, enjoying the different vistas! (Be mindful that you could meet cyclists and/or one or two vehicles.) When you reach the town, approx 30 mins, cross over the peripheral road/roundabout and make your way down towards the town centre and/or the port. Note how the streets run parallel and the main ones lead you directly down to the port! You can catch the bus at the Baile’s bus at the station. Buses from Santa Pola to Gran Alacant generally run every half hour, on the hour and half hour. (Check local timetable.) Map showing suggested walks from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola

SIERRA MAR Playa Lisa/Tamarit Summer Festival 6-10 July 2017 by Geoff Young
The Neighbourhood Association in Playa Lisa and Tamarit, together with the Ayuntamiento Santa Pola and local Traders (Cafes, bars, restaurants etc) presented their annual festival on the avenidas of Lisa and Tamarit. This was my first visit to the festival, preferring to go on Saturday evening to see the excellent Band – Black Knight, regulars at St Jaimes (Santa Pola) and the American Rock Bar (GA Commercial Centre). The Festival took place on Avda’s Ronda, Virgen Pilar,
Blasco Ibanez, and Calle Teruel where, throughout the 4 days of the festival there was an array of Fun Fair Rides for the children, Stalls, Kiosks and notably, bars and restaurants extending into the avda’s and
calles. There was sufficient taking place to occupy the children and adults during the course of the days and evening. In fact, I enjoyed the whole experience. I do admire the local residents of Santa Pola who always seem to embrace their local festivals making them such enjoyable experiences. The avda’s were full of people making revelry, taking full advantage of the occasion. One extra added delight was the walk back along Playa Lisa at 01.45am to collect my car (It was an alcohol free night in case you ask). The night was warm, but the bars and restaurants on the sea front were full with people relaxing and socialising in the cool of the night. The atmosphere was very welcoming and a mental note was made to return to Playa Lisa as soon as possible to sample the experience.

NEVER GIVE UP My name is Adam Black and I’m a person who loves Gran Alacant with my parents owning a house here for 15 years. I’m also a person who stutters.
avoid openly stuttering-this was mentally exhausting and my façade in school was often very different to my true face at home where I didn’t have the energy to change
Stammering/stuttering is a hidden disability which affects around 70 million people worldwide, around 1% of the population, cutting across all boundaries and bearing no influence to social position, race, ethnicity, job or personality. Every language has a word for it: tartamudez (Spanish), begaiement (French), hakalaanaa (Hindi), hau hick (Cantonese), domori (Japanese), nsu (Nigerian Ibo).

As a stutterer myself, I used to feel feelings of anxiety and embarrassment every time I spoke. I felt alone and that no one could understand my situation. My parents remember me speaking differently as a young child and then noticeable stuttering from early primary school. If I’m honest, I didn’t notice that I stuttered until I was aged 9 when I was reading a story out in class and couldn’t say a single word of it. I tried as hard as I could but the words would not come out of my mouth. Stuttering in school was tough, I had to work very hard to avoid words I knew I couldn’t say. In my head I was always one step ahead so that I could

Programme. This is a unique therapy option as it is run for people who stutter by people who stutter. After my first course everything changed for me. I no longer felt alone. I had a support community of other people who knew what I was feeling. The McGuire Programme taught me techniques to control my stutter, both physical and physiological. The physical techniques include a new way to breathe when speaking and an assertive tone when speaking-no holding back on sounds. The physiological techniques were about defeating the negative associations I had built up around speaking. This included speaking dysfluently in a controlled way. Being dysfluent on my own terms gave me the confidence that it is fine to speak differently from other people and it allowed me to stop hiding and to accept myself as a person who stutters.
This new found speaking technique gave me the ability to control, not cure, my stutter and has allowed me to become a successful teacher. I teach in a busy primary school and I’m very open about this hidden disability with parents and students alike. It is important for children in my school to see the real Mr Black-the one who stutters. It shows them, especially children with additional issues themselves, that with hard work and selfacceptance you can achieve your dreams. I use my experience as a person with this hidden disability to help educate and raise awareness on dealing with people who stutter. This awareness raising work resulted in me receiving a British Citizen Award at the Palace of Westminster-something I will never forget. The most important piece of advice I can give to people is to focus on all the things a person who stammers can do well and not get too hung up on the fact they stutter. Giving a person with a stutter time to speak is so important, we don’t want people to finish our sentences. We have a voice and we want to use it. As uncomfortable as it may be for you, think about the person in front of you.

Linear kitchens: are the perfect solution for long and narrow rooms. Although they do not allow the usual working triangle, they make it possible to organize the kitchen by functions. There are numerous possibilities for removable add ons to create auxiliary areas. Kitchen in U-shape: is recommended for square kitchens and it is advised to have a corridor of 120cm minimum. The main drawback is access to the corners but ingenious solutions are possible, using accessories and removables. The advantage is that they create great storage capacity. L-shaped: its advantage is that it facilitates the creation of the working triangle, the washing and cooking utilities can be placed on one side, while the other side can be dedicated only to storage. Parallel fronts: it is recommended for tubular and passage spaces that have a minimum width of 220cm to be able to leave 120cm between the two work fronts. It is advisable to install the water and cooking zone on the same wall and storage on the other. With Island: islands are ideal for large surfaces. They allow us to create large areas of storage and support. They favour coexistence and give a sense of spaciousness. The island should be positioned at least 90cm from other units on all sides. Peninsula: a peninsula is basically a connected island, converting an L-shaped kitchen layout into a horseshoe or U-shape. In many kitchens that have this layout, the peninsula serves as a room divider that separates the kitchen from a dining or living room area. Atoll: this is a special circular design arranged around the user and with all the elements distributed in a kind of console, usually use high technology and are the least common.

SANTARA LIFE RESORT PHYSICAL EXERCISE AND HEAT Hi, how are you. He we are again … this month I thought it would be useful to talk about physical exercise and heat.
We all know that during this period of extreme heat there are certain times of the day when it´s not suitable to exercise. The best time to exercise is first thing in the morning or during the evening, making sure to hydrate before, during and after your exercise and to wear light comfortable clothing. In the past it was believed that the more we sweat the more weight we lose and so people wrapped their abdominal area in plastic or ran wearing heavy clothing but this is totally mistaken as what happens is the central temperature is raised and as soon as we drink water, any weight lost is regained. Sweating is a physiological response that reduces an increase in the body´s core temperature by placing water droplets on the skin to evaporate so it´s important to drink fluids to compensate for that loss of water.
70
Another common mistake we sometimes make is to wait until we feel thirsty to have a drink. If we feel thirsty, we are already dehydrated! The sensation of thirst is a
signal from the brain that informs us of dehydration. It is important to hydrate before starting to exercise even though we don´t feel thirsty … if we wait until we feel thirsty and already have a fluid deficit it is difficult to rehydrate sufficiently. It´s also worth remembering that the sensation of being thirsty disappears well before we have replenished all the liquid lost, especially when we are drinking drinks low in sodium, such as water – thirst diminishes through a dilution of sodium in the blood. Also, as soon as the first drop of liquid wets the mouth, its nerves send signals to the brain to lessen the sensation of thirst. The importance of flavour and electrolytes One of the things that most impacts on the amount of fluid consumed during exercise is the type of drink. Many studies have found that if the drink has a flavour,

SANTARA LIFE RESORT people voluntarily drink much more than if they only drink water. If as well as having a nice taste, the drink contains electrolytes (like sodium), it stimulates further consumption of the drink. So look for drinks that improve your hydration and if you decide to drink just water, remember that the sensation of thirst will disappear more rapidly. Exercising in excessive heat can put your health at risk, for example: •
CRAMPS – muscle cramps, usually in the legs or in the stomach can be the first sign of overheatin.
•
HEAT EXHAUSTION – profuse sweating, cold, clammy skin, nausea and vomiting
•
HEATSTROKE – when the body temperature rises above 40C
Children, the elderly and overweight people are at higher risk of experiencing these problems, as are people taking certain medications and those with heart problems. However, everybody needs to take care – even an athlete in great physical shape can suffer from heatstroke or sunstroke! Advice on exercising during the summer: •
Drink a lot .. even if you don´t feel thirsty.
•
Don´t drink alcohol, caffeine or sugary fizzy drinks as these can have a diuretic effect and your body can actually lose fluid.
•
Water is the best option for less intense training. If you are planning to exercise for a couple of hours, an energy drink or one with electrolytes is better as these drinks replenish the salts and minerals. Choose the lower calorie ones that have less sugar. Ensure that your drink is chilled but not overly cold as drinks that are too
•
72
cold can cause stomachache. •
Don´t drink effervescent salts as these can increase your risk of dehydration.
•
Rest frequently in the shade.
Signs of heat exhaustion: It´s important to recognize the early signs of heat exhaustion • • • •
Profuse sweating Tiredness Thirst Muscle cramps
Advanced signs can include • • • • •
Weakness Dizziness Headache Cold, clammy skin Dark coloured urine
Signs of sunstroke can include • • • • • • • •
Fever (over 104F or 40C) Red, hot, dry skin Rapid, short breaths Weak, fast pulse Irrational behaviour Extreme confusion Fits Loss of consciousness
As soon as you notice the first signs of heatstroke or sunstroke, get out of the heat or sun immediately, remove any unnecessary layers of clothing and drink water. I hope this advice has been helpful and that by putting it into practice, you continue to take care when exercising correctly. Until next time! Gabriela

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, 'Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk.' The question was worth 70 points or none at all. One student was hard put to think wof seven advantages. He wrote: 1) It is perfect formula for the child. 2) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3) It is always the right temperature. 4) It is inexpensive. 5) It bonds the child to mother and vice versa. 6) It is always available as needed. And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test he wrote: 7)It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it. He got an A.

A man and his wife walked into a dentist's office. The man said to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one heck of a hurry I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anaesthetic, I don't have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it! We have a 10:00 AM tee time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30 already... I don't have time to wait for the anaesthetic to work!' The dentist thought to himself, "My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain." So the dentist asks him, "Which tooth is it sir?" The man turned to his wife and said, "Open your mouth Honey, and show him!

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Holi Festival Hi , my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 9 years now. My 7 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we want to encourage you to attend the amazing Holi Festival held at one of our favourite and most frequently visited places, as anyone who knows us can confirm. On Saturday 19th August Terra Natura in Benidorm will be holding this Festival of Colour, to celebrate the 45th Birthday of Petita one of their Indian Elephants. Ashlee and I, along with lots of friends and family, have attended this event over the past few years and have always had a fabulous time, so this year we wanted to tell you about it in advance to encourage you to go too. The best way to let you know what to expect is to write about our experiences in previous years ….. As we arrived our senses were teased by the sounds of Traditional Indian music and our level of excitement instantly began to rise. We were greeted by Traditional dancers and were all give a Bindi (spot on the forehead) which the kids thought was great. As we had a bit of time before the Festival began, we headed off to see some of the animals, followed by a visit to the auditorium for the outstanding interactive bird show. Time had ticked by, so off to the Elephants spacious enclosure we went to see the creatively

Out & About with Star & Ashlee painted Petita and her companion. The kids helped the keepers give them some fresh fruit and were amazed at how colourful and beautiful they looked, although the amount of food they ate left them all astounded. Then it was on to Namastepur where the traditional Indian music and dancers were already creating an ambiance of happiness, peace and joy. The level of excitement in our group was almost at its peak as we covered our heads (and the kid’s eyes), grabbed bottles of coloured water and bags of coloured powder paint in anticipation of the big event. The music had us all moving and the announcer was building up the enthusiasm in the crowd then………. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 .... the whole sky was suddenly filled with magnificent clouds of colour, we and those around us were having a great time throwing handfuls of powder paint and squirting jets of colour everywhere, there was soon very little white clothing visable!!!!! Everyone was laughing and hugging and the dancers jumped back
on stage and as we joined in the dancing, a massive feeling of celebratory joy was created by the crowd which enveloped us all The dancing went on for a while and we got a welcome dowsing from staff who were holding hose pipes on the rooftops, before going to eat. After an energy restoring meal we crossed into AquaNatura for a shower and change of clothes. The many water slides and pools were a refreshing and fun Out & About with Star & Ashlee
79 79
Out & About with Star & Ashlee way to cool off in the August heat. We also watched puppet and sea lion shows before dancing to the DJ’s tunes as he enticed us to the coloured foam party!!! This made for a brilliant end to one of our best days ever!!!
The Holi festival is truly an amazing experience and definitely not to be missed! So come and join us, fill up the car, or book a coach, check online for discounted tickets, (in previous years Terra/Aqua Natura have had an offer solely for this event, that gives you access to both parks at a much lower cost) and head on up the coast for a day guaranteed to leave you exhilarated and help you to sleep well! We give this a Family Fun Rating of 10/10 . Our advice: wear white or light clothing to be able to fully immerse yourself in colour!!! Take hats or head scarfs and goggles for the kids to protect hair and eyes. Water shoes or something with a bit of grip are handy as the floor can get a bit slippery. Leave bags in your car or the lockers, to ensure your belongings don’t get wet and finally, be prepared for a fantastic day full of fun and laughter. Join us next month for some more fun “Out and About”. Bye for now , Star and Ashlee x

TEXT MESSAGE Fred, this is Alan next door. I have a confession to make. I've been riddled with guilt these past few months and have been trying to get the courage to tell you to your face, but I am at least now telling you in text as I can't live with myself a moment longer without you knowing. The truth is I have been sharing your wife, day and night when you're not around. In fact, probably more than you. I haven't been getting it at home recently, but that's no excuse, I know. The temptation was just too much. I can no longer live with the guilt and I hope you will accept my sincerest apologies and forgive me. It won't happen again. Please suggest a fee for usage, and I'll pay you. Regards, Alan. THE RESPONSE: Fred, feeling insulted and betrayed, grabbed his gun, and shot his neighbour dead. He returned home where he poured himself a stiff drink and sat down on the sofa. He took out his phone where he saw he has a second message from his neighbour: THE SECOND MESSAGE: Hi Fred, This is Alan next door again. Sorry about the typo on my last text. I expect you figured it out anyway, and that you noticed that darned Auto-Correct changed 'WiFi' to 'Wife.' Technology, hey? Regards, Alan

DEBUNKING THE PROTEIN MYTH Over the years there has been a lot of hype, debate and confusion surrounding protein. It’s taken centre stage in the spot light overshadowing most of all the other macronutrients and micronutrients.
Let’s take a look Protein is a complex molecule which is made up of 20 different amino acids; these amino acids are the basic building blocks of protein, 12 of the 20 amino acids the body can synthesise whilst the other remaining 8 known as ´essential amino acids´ need to be obtained through diet so technically our body requires amino acids not protein per se. All protein is initially made by plants; only plants have the ability to take nitrogen from the air break the molecules apart and incorporate that nitrogen into amino acids making protein, if we take a look at the largest and strongest mammals on the planet such as the gorilla, elephant and rhino they all consume a plant based diet- no problem with protein deficiency for these big guys. Protein is an essential nutrient critical not only in building and replacing muscle tissue but in taking part in other vital roles in the body such as transporting nutrient, supporting a healthy immune system, producing enzymes and hormones and being a key component in metabolism. Many people are switching from the traditionally animal based sources of proteins and are swapping over to plant based proteins, by skipping out the middle
94
man “animal” and going straight to the plant source for the energy and protein. Many athletes are reaping the rewards and health benefits of a plant based diet and are seeing phenomenal results including Ultra marathon runners, Ironman champions, pro surfers, MMA fighters and even the famous tennis Williams sisters. Most people believe that meat and dairy products are the sole source of dietary protein worthy of mention but plant sources of protein tend to be overall healthier especially when multiple plant sources of protein are combined as in many global food traditions do such as beans and rice. Grains, beans, vegetables, nuts and seeds are all surprisingly loaded with protein; here are a few examples of complete protein food combinations Nut butters on whole grain toast Peanut butter and banana oatmeal Hummus and pita bread Quinoa, tofu and veggies Brown rice and broccoli Animal sources of protein tends to provide all the essential amino acids but they also tend to have a high amount of saturated fat and dietary cholesterol which have both

been linked to cardiovascular diseases. Replacing animal protein with plant based alternatives dramatically increases the antioxidant, fibre and mineral intake, since animal foods are almost completely devoid in several of these important nutrients, another added bonus is that plant based protein is also usually cheaper and overall healthier and more environmentally friendly than animal protein. A diet focused around plants is preferable since they are alkalising on the body whilst animal based products tend to be acid forming putting stress on the body, causing inflammation and disease. Beans, peas and pulses are fantastic substitutes for meat since they are a high source of protein but contain little to low fat and no cholesterol. SPORTS FOR DOGS
People who decide to do sport usually get prepared in advance: they get hydrated, control their pulse, and of course they stop when they feel too tired. Dogs don’t get prepared, so they will run or walk till they are exhausted. Nobody will control their pulse or temperature. Remember their skin is unable to sweat, so they can suffer a heat stroke easily. These risk are increased in case of brachycephalic dogs (Pugs, Bulldogs, Boxers), and those ones which wear a muzzle. When a person wants to start doing sport and joins a sport club, he or she is asked for a medical certificate which proves is in good physical condition. Of course our pets don’t need any certificate, but we should think in advance if it’s ok for them to run by our side considering their short legs (which implies a proportionally much bigger effort for them), or if it’s a good idea to walk for 2 hours on hot asphalt, etc
Nowadays, sports are in style, this is an unquestionable thing. We can see people jogging, walking, and even skating and bicycle riding everywhere. Lots of dogs owners want to do sport with their pets, because they think sport is good for the pets in every case. There are sports specially created for dogs, such as agility, schutzhund and freestyle (dancing choreography with dogs, as seen in Britain’s got Talent 2012 with Ashleigh and Pudsey dancing The Flinstones theme song). These specific activities are developed specially for the dog, and the human is just the partner, so there usually is no problem since the exercise is been created according to the dog’s body particularities and requirements. Problems may eventually appear in case of dogs joining their owners when they do sport. Not every dog is able to run 10 km or climb mountains for hours.
114
Even dogs that work, such as rescue dogs working for Police or Firemen, usually work for short periods of time, 3o minutes or even shorter. Shepherd dogs work all day, but they are not running or chasing the livestock all the time. Puppies play intensely for 10-15 min and then they take a rest. At the practice we are detecting an increasing number of orthopaedic problems caused by an excess of exercise. Of course, going upstairs and downstairs also implies an excess of exercise, but in some cases this may be difficult to stop. Before making our dog to do sport, let’s consider its age, weight and body condition. Our pets are always happy to join us and don’t complain, but this doesn’t mean joining us is good for them in every case. And what about sports for cats? Easy: just buy a mouse cat toy.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
Common Kestrel
this time of the year when young birds are roaming far and wide trying to establish new territories, and finding the local sparrows an easy source of food. Of course, other birds are not their main source of prey, it is estimated that they only comprise about 30% of the Kestrel's diet. Kestrels have several weapons at their disposal - their sharp talons and beak, superb eyesight, rapid flight – but above all their most characteristic ability is that of being able to hover in the sky for long periods while they search the ground below for signs of their favourite food, small rodents and other animals such as lizards and large insects. Even if you haven't seen a Kestrel here yet, you will almost certainly have seen them as you drive along motorways back in the UK, where the grass verges are full of potential prey.
You are probably feeling very sorry for the poor little sparrow in my photo this month – cut down in the prime of its life by a vicious predator. Wouldn't it be nicer if everything just got along, live and let live? Why does nature have to be so cruel, where's the sense in everything eating everything else? Well, as you sit by the pool, munching on your chorizo or (heaven forbid) your burger in a bun, swatting the occasional fly aside, if this didn't happen you wouldn't be eating meat, and you would be swamped by a billion insects which haven't been eaten by other birds and animals. You may or may not like the sparrows, but if the Kestrel didn't catch some of them, you'd be knee deep in chirruping birds trying to steal your sandwich. This is what we mean when we talk about the balance of nature. The Common Kestrel (Cernicalo vulgar in Spanish) is the most common avian raptor in our area, and may be seen occasionally around our urbanisations, particularly at

You may occasionally catch sight of one in the Clot, but you are more likely to see them when you are out and about in the countryside, particularly around farmed areas. The undergrowth in the Clot is perhaps a little too dense for their liking; they prefer land with shorter growth where they have a better chance of spotting something moving beneath them. There is a very similar bird in Spain called the Lesser Kestrel, which tends to occur in more inland areas and is rather difficult (even for some experts) to separate from the Common variety, but it is safe to say that any Kestrel seen in our locality is probably the Common version. You can see more photographs of wildlife our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month. Mark
