NUESTRAS NOTICIAS LOCALES AHORA ESTAN EN ESPANOL
Hi everybody,
We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month
In February you can enjoy Moors and Christians parades in Bocairente on 4nd at 4:30p.m and in Sax 1st to the 5th. Another activity in February are Carnivals, all Towns along the Costa Blanca celebrate Carnivals, one of the best in the area is the one held in Torrevieja, there are several events, Main parades on Sunday 19th and Saturday the 25th of February night carnival parade. Like every February do not miss the almond blossom in Jalon or Guadalest valleys. But if you want to see something special go to see my favourite “El valle de la Seta” and enjoy the little villages of Famorca and Facheca. It could be beginning, middle or end of the month, but it lasts about ten days. I do not know what is going to happen this year but last year I spent a day out there and it really was wonderful, go and discover it by yourself. Bye bye friends. Hello Everyone,
I hope the weather has well truly turned the corner by the time you read this. It certainly was a couple of months of weird weather we had, Christmas seems a distant past already and everyone is getting ready for the summer ahead. On my travels around Gran Alacant I cant help but notice the amount of properties being renovated and improvements being done. This must be a sign of peoples confidence in Gran Alacant! Waiting time for new houses and apartments being built is getting longer due to the demand, airlines are also looking for extra slots to Alicante airport that is even after a record year last year for the airport. Brexit it seems has had minimum effect so far! Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 58

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: INFORMATION BOARDS: So often we see visitors to Gran Alacant waiting at the bus stop by Consum heading for Santa Pola. When I ask them the reason they are going there all to often the response is it isn’t available in Gran Alacant. They are all totally unaware of the other areas of this lovely place. Why don’t we have a notice board with a YOU ARE HERE arrow on it showing all the areas of interest? We could do with at least 3, namely in central area, doctors area and Carrabassi area. They could show the bus stops and routes, the doctors, chemists and beaches etc. Established businesses like supermarkets and banks could be asked for a contribution. i never see any reference to the fantastic skywalk and yet these beautiful views are so close to the last stop on the road train route. Can you ask the council to do this as we might ensure visitors spend some of their money here? Ann Paterson Town Hall Answer: I think this is a great idea, which I have transferred to the Tourism Department of Town Hall. As soon as we have an economical budget, and all the administrative steps which must be done, I can do the catching up about this issue. Q: Drains and New Gates Hi Ged & Lou, Came back to GA after a 2-month break. We live Avda Polonia. What happened to the drain covers in the road, whilst we were away. They all seem to be loose. As a result, there is an almighty clang each time a car drives over them. Not so bad during the day, but not so good at 3am! I wonder if
4
the Ayuntamiento has any ideas? Add that to the rumbling noise from the new gates (we live next to a set) & why do drivers have to stop at the gates and blow their horns till their friend halfway down the side road come to meet them? Noise levels have shot up! Chris Town Hall Answer: About the noise level produced by the drain covers in the road in Avda Polonia, I have transferred all the information to the Infrastructure Department, so as it can be solved as soon as possible. However, I would like to ask for the very address, so the municipal technicians can go there and observe the problem and start setting up the proper solution. On the other side, the noise level produced by people while they are driving, it represents a problem based on a lack of civism and education. The Town Hall encourages all the people to go or call the Police so as they can deal with these kind of problems. BARRY’S BITS (of news) More and more visitors seem to be taking a liking to this area, “where we live” Hotels recorded strong occupancy rates over 2016, and our airport at AlicanteElche, looked after 12.5 million passengers passes through to this area.

Q: WEEDS ON AVDA NORUEGA Again, these weeds, on one of the most important roads into Gran Alacant, has again been un noticed by workers at the Town Hall. Surely at least one councilor must pass through Gran Alacant, and see this eye sore. Town Hall Answer: Regarding this question, I have transferred the complaint to the Infrastructure Department (in charge of all the garden areas in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant), so as they can solve this problem in a few days, depending on the work level of the municipal workers. xxxxxxx It is nice to see more new business ventures starting up on the urbanization. We all to need to make a living, so good luck to you. Some are taking over other established venues whilst some are staring up from scratch. Watch out for some of these in our magazine. When you advertise with us, you also get FREE advertising on our web site. Take advantage of this to help get your name out there. xxxxxxx It is amazing the number of times, when we owed this magazine, we were asked by residents for a seat, part way up the hill from the fountain roundabout. We even volunteered to pay for one, but still no seat. People are still asking. Please try extra hard at the Town Hall for a seat to be provided. xxxxxxx The “Life in the Sun” programme on channel four, showed paragliding taking place at the top of Gran Alacant just before the lighthouse, early January. Nice to see our homeland on the television. xxxxxxx
FOLLOW UPS:
As you can see each month it is sometimes difficult to answer a particular question immediately as they have to be transferred to the relevant department. Due to the coalition of 5 party’s in place at Santa Pola Town Hall, some questions are taking a longer time to investigate. We will keep all of your questions on file and keep asking them until we get an answer. DYING TREES ON AVDA.NORUEGA Regarding to the pipes, the municipal plumbers are aware of this problem, and they have been told to go there and fix all the pipes that are broken. I hope it would be as soon as possible. Related to the trees, after talking to the municipal environmental engineering department, I can answer to this two people concerned about the situation of the trees in GA that the appearance of the trees is very normal. These kind of trees, by autumn and winter, looks like they were ill, but this is completely normal, and its appearance starts changing by spring. So the trees are not ill! BENCHES: Regarding to the benches, the municipal works department and the municipal technician architect have studied the situation and it is a little bit more complicated that it seems, due to the steepness of the hill and the necessity to level the ground in order to set up the benches (it is related to safety reasons, which is a very important matter that always concerns the Town Hall). If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, please e-mail: info@granalacantadvertiser.com
Good to see so many new properties going up on Gran Alacant. If they are building and selling, it must all point to a good future for us on our Gran Alacant.

I have received many complaints about my article, “In hospital, In Spain”, asking why I did not complete the story. So for those interested, read on. For those not interested, look away now. The morning the staples came out of the knee was a milestone. All tablets and injections had finished, so onwards and upwards…..we thought. We got back home after the hospital and during the afternoon the stomach aches came back. They got worse and worse as the day went on, until around midnight the pain was so bad that I had to drive Sandra back to the hospital, back to emergencies. They checked her over and admitted her to the observation ward, where she was put on a pain relief drip and where we settled back in for the night. The pain relief was not working too well so an uncomfortable night ensued. In the early morning Sandra was taken for an xray and later the surgeon arrived to explain that it was either
Sandra’s gall bladder or her appendix and that they would have to do a scan. This was promptly carried out and the result showed that there was a bad infection and that the gall bladder would have to come out. We asked when, and were told within the hour, around 5pm. The time came and off Sandra went. They tried to do it keyhole but there was far too much scar tissue infection, so the three keyholes also had a cut added. She was back onto a ward later in the evening. So, from arriving at hospital to being operated on and back on the ward, all within 24 hours. It looked good when the medical staff saw her also hopping around on sticks from the knee operation, really in the wars. Two more nights for us both in hospital, before Sandra was released. Fifteen days later the staples came out, would you believe on the morning of the day we went off to Benidorm for Christmas. Talk about timing!

GASP THEATRE GROUP
In December, GASP proudly made a donation of 500Euros to the Cruz Roja of Santa Pola. Thanks to the good audience at our last show we have been able to help once more, this very worthy cause, especially at a time when their resources are being stretched to the limit. We know that the organization spends a lot of money caring for those people less fortunate.... and Christmas is a time especially for "giving". So thank you to all who came to see our evening of Victorian Melodramas and post-Brexit satire. Without you buying tickets and making further donations on the evening, we would not be able to help Cruz Roja in this way. MONTERMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB
Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad and Avalon
MONTERMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB Happy New Year to all from Monte Mar Bowls Club! After the Christmas break we had a good result from the Toreadors, mixed results from the Matadors and Winter League. In the Fed Fours competition we have also had mixed results. On Saturday January 7th we held our annual fun day. In lovely sunshine everyone had a great time trying out there bowling skills around the six rink crazy bowling course. After the mornings fun bowling everyone enjoyed a well deserved buffet and drinks supplied by the club. All proceeds from the day have gone towards our Defibrillator fund. This enabled us to reach our target so we can go ahead with the purchase of the equipment and fund the training of twelve members to operate the Defibrillator. The winner who scored 14 points was Dave Melville, he donated his prize back to the club. Well done to the organisers and everyone who attended. January 22nd the ladies of social committee have organised a lunch at La Cova El Campello. There are forty people booked so it promises to be a good afternoon.

Chatter CHARITY I have always been a champion of charity, having a firm belief in the work they do. In Britain I volunteered myself and also worked for a large international charitable organisation, for about eight years. The time I spend here, working with good, dedicated people taught me much about the nature of those, who give up their time, essentially to ensure that others, can also have the chances they had in life. Although the last two years I spent with this trust, were not what I would have expected, from such a large high profile agency, this has by no means tainted my time, spent with those who work, at ground level tirelessly. These are the unsung hero’s of nations across the world, not only the United Kingdom. There will always be those who take advantage of vulnerable people, especially in the voluntary sector, as I discovered, before moving to Spain; that should not, however, detract from all the good work, undertaken by some wonderful local nonprofit groups. When I arrived in Gran Alacant, I had become weary of such trusts and foundations and was unsure about ever contributing in a voluntary sense again. My experience of the charitable sector in Spain began with a conversation at Molly Malones, sat eating breakfast one morning. I was directed to, The Easy Horse Care Charity, in Masa Square, where I volunteered for about a month. The Foundation cares for horses and donkeys in this region of Spain. Unlike Britain, there is no history of volunteering, and the concept is relatively new. Easy Horse Care had a fantastic core group of dedicated staff, all giving up their time for free, helping a cause they hold dear.
28
With several high profile charities in the UK hitting the headlines recently, for negative reasons, I was interested to know, why people give up their time, to help those in most need. I have written before about the community in Gran Alacant, who have gone out of their way to help me, this does extend to good causes also. Whether or not this philanthropic nature is unique to GA, I am unsure, but it is striking that so many in this community, Expats and others are all too ready to offer hope to those who suffer hardship. Most of those, involved at the grassroots level, expressed their desire to see adults and children lifted out of poverty or terrible living conditions. Others were keen to support convictions close to their heart, debilitating and chronic illnesses, that receive little or no funding from the state. The single phrase that kept popping up, was ‘I am lucky to be living the life I am, in Spain. I want others to feel some of the benefits, I have enjoyed!’ Coupled with spare time on their hands and a predisposition for giving, this community seemed to be far more benevolent than most! I have attended many events in Gran Alacant, since moving here in January of last year. I would like to talk about several such occasions; fundraisers I have attended or taken part in, during my eleven months living in Spain. In September I attended an event for Tasha Lynch in Masa Square. Tasha, a local girl, was diagnosed with Myasthenia Gravis. Although Tasha survived this, for unknown reasons, she became paralysed, contracting Myelopathy of the spinal cord, which then led to Transverse Myelitis. A fundraiser was organised by businesses in Masa Square, which I attended with friends. To be honest, I didn’t usually go to Masa Square on a regular basis, living quite a distance away. Gran Alacant does lack regular public transport and does have
THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.
ongoing issues with taxis, which I will explain more in another article; despite this, I was as impressed as anyone could be, about every aspect of this fantastic occasion, all in aid of charity, Masa Square was packed; most of the restaurants and bars were taking part. There were stalls, games, live entertainment and a raffle, with all the prizes donated from those who live, work and support this local community. It was impressive to see Masa Square come together in aid of a cause, that struck accord with all those partaking and others like me, who were watching from the side lines. I had missed this aspect of neighbourhood life in Britain; it just doesn’t exist any more. To see so many, play their part, for one of their own was truly marvellous to witness. The enduring memory of that day for me was the camaraderie, everyone dancing the evening away and enjoying the superb atmosphere, entertainment and music! This December I had the pleasure of taking part in another fate; a charity event organised, for the most part, by Pam. A lady who does much good work for good causes, here in Gran Alacant; a true stalwart! I have been to many such occurrences in Sierra Mar, the square hosting a Christmas bazaar in aid of Elche Orphanage. I hosted a stall selling cup cakes and a competition, ‘Guess the weight of the Christmas cake’, all a Euro a time, to take part, with all proceeds going to the orphanage. There were market stalls, selling an eclectic mix of jewellery and bric a brac; also a tombola, competitions and a raffle. Up to this day, the weather had been appalling, but lucky enough the rain more or less held off until the afternoon and evening activities had abated. The square had also purchased a Christmas tree for the centre. Sierra Mar felt festive; Santa Claus
was there; as the light of the day faded, those taking part sang carols around the tree. It was all very traditional and joyous; Every one, spectators and organisers, beaming smiles on their faces. It was heart warming to see so many local residents come together to make others lives a little more bearable. People had donated presents for the Children; every day items, as well as gifts for Christmas Day. A contingent of kids from the home were also in attendance. I was able to meet all of them, as they watched, with delight, the festivities on display. All the children were polite , offered greetings in English and looked overjoyed at all the gifts Sierra Mar had collected. As they left, I was clearing up my stall outside. Each one of them said farewell, gave Christmas felicitations and looked genuinely happy at what residents had achieved for them. A truly memorable and uplifting day! Gran Alacant has much to be proud of; from my observances, people do come together here, working for the community they live in, in aid of others who need help. There is of course a role for large international charities and many of them do fantastic work. It is important to acknowledge, conversely, the commitment that local people have, to some of the most important local charities, working for the good of those in Gran Alacant and the surrounding areas, The work and accomplishments achieved, by such a small, but well organised group of local residents, is well known. Many people and organisations have benefited from the munificence of my neighbours and friends. They make me proud to call this place my home and have restored my faith in all the good work that can be done At a local level; you witness great things done by good people for those who deserve more from society; that is something everyone in Gran Alacant should be proud of!

SANTARA LIFE RESORT
THE IMPORTANCE OF STRETCHING We are very lucky that with the lovely weather we have here in GA it encourages many sports … running, walking, paddle, watersports, etc. What I don´t often see though is stretching – either after exercise or as an activity in its own right so I thought it worthwhile to talk about the many benefits of stretching. Improvement of posture: Most people suffer over time from the shortening of the muscles in the back which limits movement and contributes to bad posture. Stretching can help restore the freedom of movement of these muscles, improve posture and avoid the onset of back pain. Increased range of movement (ROM) in joints: A sedentary lifestyle over the years will eventually reduce joint movement which can have a significant impact on quality of life. To avoid this, the best prevention is to include stretching in every exercise that you do. Prevention of injury: An improved posture and full ROM will help prevent muscle injuries. Assists blood flow to the muscles: Tense muscles actually make it more difficult for blood circulation to reach their interior and this increases blood pressure. In contrast, a stretched muscle makes circulation easier and with it the delivery of nutrients. Reduces muscular pain from exercise (DOM) Delayed Onset Muscular Soreness: A stretched muscle improves the supply of nutrients and oxygen and it repairs itself better after hard work that has caused micro-traumatisms. Decreases the effects of stress: Stretching reduces muscular tension and relaxes our mental state. One of the effects of stress is an increase in muscular tension and by reducing this tension through stretching we can improve our mental state.
34
As we can see, the benefits of stretching are many. Throughout my career I have been convinced of the importance of stretching and whatever we do and however hard we train, be it aerobic, anaerobic, strength, resistance, etc, if we don´t stretch then in the short, medium or long term we will experience various physical problems. It is advisable to stretch after each workout, spending at least 40 seconds on each muscle. Beginners can use a watch to time this but as you become more expert you will be able to feel yourself when your muscle is sufficiently stretched. Always start with the largest muscles and then the smaller ones. The atmosphere for stretching is important too. Somewhere silent or with gentle music will mean you can relax mentally as well as physically. Breathing is also important as the muscles need oxygen to relax even more and you get a longer stretch if you breathe in and out deeply. Concentrate whilst stretching …. don´t be distracted by thinking about everything you have to do later … clear your mind and visualize that with each exhalation your muscle is stretching further and further. If you are only doing stretching, two or three times a week is ideal but everyone´s situation is different and twice a week would be a great start. I hope you put this into practice. When you see how much better you feel after stretching, I´m sure you won´t give it up! PRIVATE HEALTH INSURANCE WATCH OUT At the time of reading the interesting description of Sandra's surgery at Elche General Hospital (G.A.Advertiser – January edition) I am waiting for a call from the same hospital, to have my right kidney removed. Inspired by the story of Sandra's successful operation, I feel like sharing my entirely different experience in the private health sector – and, in particular, its insurance sector.
This is my story:
1: Late Summer/Autumn 2016 at IMED, Elche (private) Hospital, facilitated by my private health insurance with DKV. A policy I have had – and paid for dearly – for more than twelve years: During the Summer I experienced an increasing need ”to get up at night”, hence my first consultation with the Urologist on the 29th Sept., followed up by the usual blood test 06th Oct. and an Electro Cardiogram. Next consultation on the 10th Oct. The Urologist was not satisfied with what he could see from the first scanning and ordered a CT-scanning on the 13th Oct. During the following consultation on the 07th Nov. I was informed that two malignant tumours were discovered. The doctor's recommendation was to have the kidney removed (actually he had already – as early as the 10th Oct. - scheduled me for surgery on the 18th November). It was emphasized that the doctor could NOT determine whether it was (is) cancer, until the tumours could be analysed – after the kidney had been removed. This is important, as my health insurance does not cover cancer operations or cancer-treatment of any kind.
So far so good – I thought! 2: My problems began on the 25th Oct. simply by asking IMED Hospital to obtain the necessary authorization for my insurance company (DKV) to cover the costs
38
of the operation. Also, I asked IMED for an estimate for the additional cost I would have to pay out of my own pocket. Did you think that a private insurance covers everything when hospitalized? WRONG! As an example, you will have to pay for all medication supplied outside the operation theatre! The reply I received from IMED was that I should not push them to get the authorization, as this would be according to ”their protocol”. To my request for an estimate of own cost, I never received a reply! Just to give you, dear readers, an example of costs of personal nature with a private insurance policy: Last year, at IMED, I had cataract surgery on both eyes. DKV covered the costs of the surgery, but I had to pay for the lenses. € 300 out of my own pocket - for EACH eye! This operation would have been entirely FREE in a public hospital! 3: Back to my kidney problems: While I was awaiting the day of hospitalization and surgery I discovered by coincidence - that IMED hospital does not perform ”keyhole surgery”! As the size of my tumours are clearly within the limits of this kind of surgery I was obviously NOT prepared to go for a 20-30 centimetre cut used nowadays only under complicated circumstances! Fairly reluctantly IMED agreed to find out if a Keyhole operation could be carried out at their main hospital in Benidorm. This happened to be the case! However, before a date was set for the operation, DKV refused on the 10th Nov. to authorize coverage! DKV informed IMED, but didn’t bother to inform me as the policyholder! Despite several attempts to get an explanation of the decision from DKV,
THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 12TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK. CARABASSI CENTRE
neither IMED nor myself could obtain any information whatsoever on which grounds they refused and according to which paragraph in my insurance policy the refusal was justified. DKV simply did not react to telephone calls and e-mails!!! 4: This brings me to Elche General Hospital. On the 21st Nov. I got a referral from my GP in Gran Alacant and on the next day my first visit to Elche on 22nd Nov. was registration and ”scheduling”. A week later, 29th Nov., I had my first consultation with the Urologist, who decided for a number of tests: 01st Dec. TAC-scanning, 07th Dec. blood test, Electro Cardiogram and X-ray.15th Dec. second consultation with the Urologist, who decided for surgery – not acute but fairly soon (most probably in January). Later on the same day I was ”cleared” by the anaesthetist. So now, as I mentioned at the beginning, I am waiting for THE telephone call to come to Elche for my KEYHOLE OPERATION. The efficiency, professionalism and kindness I have met at Elche so far, is tops – and now further strengthened by Barry and Sandra's experience. To justify my accusation of WATCH OUT in the headline for private health insurance, please read on!
The story of my problems with DKV:
On the 11th Nov. I was informed by IMED that DKV had refused to authorize coverage of my surgery. IMED expressed great concern and said they didn’t understand the rejection as it was not grounded – just refused! Obviously, I contacted immediately DKV per e-mail (always per e-mail to make absolutely sure, what has been ”said”) to get an explanation. Not as much the rejection itself, but on what grounds and which paragraph in my insurance policy would justify the refusal. NO REPLY! Later the same day I sent DKV a reminder. Their ultra-short reply: ”Call IMED”! My third e-mail to DKV on that day, emphasizing that I – as a policy holder felt entitled to an explanation from DKV directly: NO REPLY! My fourth e-mail to DKV on the evening of the 11th: NO REPLY! On the 15th Nov. I sent another e-mail insisting on an explanation, accusing DKV to neglect my
health situation. NO REPLY! From the 16th Nov. to the 09th Dec. I have had several communications with Insurance Agent from Santa Pola through whom I had established my DKV insurance – more than twelve years ago, and who in a polite way indicated they could do nothing. On the 19th Nov. I sent a complaint to the person who is supposed to be in charge of DKV's Alicante office. NO REPLY! Through other sources I found the faxnumber for DKV Customer Service. On the 28th Nov. I sent them a fax – explaining the situation. NO REPLY! Finally, on 14th Dec. I sent a letter directly to the Managing Director of DKV in Zaragoza. NO REPLY!
Moral of the story:
If, for some reason, one is not under the public Spanish health system, a private health insurance may be a good idea – or even necessary. Being a Resident and within the Public Health System it may still be an idea – provided it works! After all, however, the benefits are quickly overseen: Single accommodation when hospitalized, quick access to specialists including scanning etc. That's about what I paid around 1.000 EUROS for year, excluding any form of cancer treatment hence the fairly reasonable fee. If one can accept double accommodation, slightly – or sometimes substantially – longer waiting times, I don't see much point in throwing your money after DKV. One final comment: The doctors and specialists you meet in private hospitals are – to a very large extent – identical with those you meet in the public hospitals. End of story!
There is an old saying:
It's better to have an Insurance Policy that you don't need than needing Insurance that you don't have. Unfortunately, I ended up in the worst possible position: Having a DKV Insurance that did not cover - when I needed it!!! By the way: I'm still waiting for the telephone call! Uffe N.

OUR PROJECTS This is an example of how we can change a kitchen space by just removing one wall. In this case we combined the kitchen and laundry room. Into the gained extra space we put the washing machine, tumble dryer, heater, storage cupboards and an oven/microwave column. This option concentrates the storage on one wall and gives clear space in the rest of the kitchen. It makes everything easy to reach and is easy to clean too. The units have integrated handles; in addition all cupboards in the cooking area have large drawers with accessories like a cutlery box, separators and recycling facilities. There are useful hidden sockets with mobile connections and an integrated dishwasher here too. We have used simple lines and white tones with soft contrasting colours. Notice that the lighting doesn’t create shadows in the working area. We always plan to create the best cooking experience for our clients.

Story of Carlos ... Named Carlos now, he was rescued from a home where he was beaten badly from a few months old. He was tied up all the time without food and water for 5 days of the week in hot weather. We rescued him jumping over a wall to where he was as soon as we found out the way this man treats dogs. We told the man that we could sue him. We found that Carlos had a tremendous trauma, mainly towards men who could not get near him. He ran frightened when a man wanted to give him love, pet him, no one could get close to him until after several attempts and patiently waiting for hrs he was petted for the 1st time in his life!! Advertised for adoption a UK couple of advanced age called and we went through a hard & costly adoption process. The Couple had 2 other big loving dogs & live about 2,5 hrs from GA. With them Carlos started to progress little by little, the family have worked with training him with lots of patience to a satisfactory turnout; but while in the slow progress Carlos began to trust men again the Man and became close to him, he found out all men were not
mean. One of the dogs in the family died in November & Carlos missed her, but coped with it as so did the rest of the family.
Reversely the Kind Man owner died this 19 December. Carlos has had a hard life so far but his trauma is almost cured thanks to this loving Couple. He now has to cope with his Friend man's death & continue trusting people. Finding a loving patient family has been a blessing...They were/ are his Angels. Adoptions like this makes our hearts fulfilled with an impossible to describe happy feeling making us able to sleep better & continue helping animals. Out & About with Star & Ashlee Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 8 years now. My 6 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home.
This month we wanted to share our experiences visiting the “Skywalk” of Santa Pola.
The first way to get there, is to park near the turnaround at the end of Avenida Escandinavia at the very top of Gran Alacant and take in the views as you walk towards the lighthouse. You then need to take the path that runs behind the lighthouse and on the Santa Pola side of the lighthouse you will see a walkway to the “Skywalk”. The other option is via the N332. In order to make this turn it is best to approach it on the way from Santa Pola to Gran Alacant. On the right hand side of the N332, after the large restaurant, just before the hill goes down, you will see a sign for “Faro del Cabo de Santa Pola”. NOTE: This is a rather tight turn. You then drive along what I affectionately call “the never ending road” for almost 4km, until you reach the parking area behind the Light House. You then go to the right of the Light House and here you will find the “Skywalk”.
This amazing structure was constructed in 2015 and cost €300,000. It is approximately 100m long and allows for some amazing views of the coast from Santa Pola to Benidorm. Tabarca Island can be seen clearly and sunsets are particularly spectacular when viewed from here. There are two options for getting to the Skywalk, which is located next to the lighthouse at the top of Gran Alacant.
52
Now you have arrived you can take your time admiring the views all along the coast. Alicante and Santa Barbara castle

and Tabarca Island all look stunning viewed from here. As you walk along the structure it feels like the sea is proudly showing off her amazing colours as she glistens and sparkles in the sunlight. You will also notice that a trend of attaching so
called “Love Locks” to the bridge by couples and families is becoming more popular. When you reach the end of the viewing area, taking a “selfie” with Tabarca Island in the background, is a must for all visitors that feel brave enough. There are some information boards which give details of the walkways and other lighthouses along this part of the coast. Some people also enjoy making the “Skywalk” a pit stop on a marked walk/hike from Gran Alacant to Santa Pola across the top of the mountain. NOTE: Sensible shoes/ trainers should be worn as the walk to the structure is over the campo. Also be aware that it can get quite windy on the skywalk itself. Out & About with Star & Ashlee

Mayka’s Kitchen
Mayka’s Kitchen What a winter we are having this year! Cold, rain & snow! We keep going with the hot dishes I think. All we want is a lovely and hot bowl of soup and this month I have chosen a very typical dish from a Basque country.
White beans with clams
Ingredients • • • • • • • •
250gr white beans (fabes) soaked overnight 1 onion - peeled & halved 1 ripe tomatoe parsley 1/2 carrot - peeled 20 clams 60ml extra virgin olive oil salt
Let’s Start! Drain the beans and simmer them very gently for 2 hours with the onion, tomatoe, carrot and parsley in enough water to cover everything. Every 10-15 minutes add a little water to make sure the beans are always covered. Put a little bit water in a different pan and steam the clams until open. Remove them as soon as they open. Strain the liquid and put it aside. When the beans are cooked, removed the vegetables and blend the vegetables together in a blender. Add the blended mixture to the beans. Add olive oil and season with salt. Stir and leave the beans cook gently for another 5-8 minutes. Serve very hot & enjoy!
Que Aproveche!
Enjoy! 54

RISE AND GRIND So we have leaped into action and are now on our way to creating much healthier habits. Unfortunately there is no one quick fix magic pill to become healthier but no need to panic! There’s only a few things that are needed commitment being one of them, hard work, discipline and patience, we need to remember that results come over time not over night. So be kind to yourself and be patient, after all its not a race, nor a competition. Eating the right foods, getting enough rest and keeping stress levels to a low are all vital to good health but this month I want to focus
a great tool to change your body it has the power to change your mind, attitude and mood. Exercise is therapy and if possible the gym is a fantastic place to start out, surrounding yourself with likeminded healthy conscience people and professional trainers is definitely a great advantage, but you do not necessarily need a potentially expensive gym membership to get into better shape. There are plenty of no costs or low cost options whether it’s going on a bike ride, walking the dog out in the campo, going for a walk or run down by the beach or simply doing some yoga or Pilates stretches at home. Whatever activity you choose make sure it’s something enjoyable and have fun, that way you’re more likely to keep at it ,consistency is the key. I think we all need to remember exercise is a celebration of what are bodies are able to do, it’s not a form of punishment. Here just a few of the many benefits of being more active. • • • • • • • •

Walking is a great place to start out!
Its free, low impact gets you out in the fresh air. 10,000 steps a day is what we are advised to aim for but most of us only average a very dismal 3,000 to 4,000 steps, aiming for 10,000 steps a day may seem a daunting or difficult task but actually it’s pretty easy to fit in extra steps by simply choosing to ditching the car and walk to the shops, taking the stairs instead of taking the elevator or skipping the short cut and taking the dog on a longer walk, wearing a pedometer or fit bit device is a fun way to keep track of your daily progress. It has been proven with regular walking for as little as 30 minutes a day we can reduce the risk of multiple chronic illnesses including the top killers like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, stroke and even some cancers. Not only that but being outside in the fresh air can be rejuvenating and refreshing for the mind whilst building and strengthening muscle mass and bone density, leading to less osteoporosis.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
HIGIA PECORIS, SALUS POPULI This Latin sentence, which means “livestock hygiene is the people’s health”, appears at every Veterinary profession emblem in Spain. The sentence speaks for itself. In previous articles, we have written about the importance of Veterinary profession in the task of keeping people healthy: Vets inspect sanitary conditions of restaurants, markets, and food manufacturers. They also control the standards of quality of the food we buy at supermarkets or any other place. Of course Vets are the people who watch over animal health and welfare (including pets and livestock). This time we would like to insist in a kind of responsibility which is even bigger than taking care of people or animals: the environment. Both Vets and pet owners have the responsibility of making a proper utilization of medicines. There are lots of environmentally dangerous residues in most susbstances we use daily, such as antiparasitic medicines, medical shampoos, antibiotics, hormones… All of them must be used carefully, and the remains of medicines must be taken to the chemist for their correct disposal. The Vet’s responsibility consists of prescribing just the absolutely necessary quantity of medicines for every case, not to overmedicalize, and to provide information about the risks. The owner’s responsibility consists on following carefully the Vet’s instructions, not to self-medicate (which means, in case of Veterinary medicine, not to give an animal any medicine without asking a Vet first), and not to buy medicines from unauthorized places. We see sometimes cases of animals that have been previously medicated with antibiotics by breeders or animal shelters without any kind of Veterinary control, or animals that are having medicines which have been purchased without Veterinary prescription at pet shops or the Internet; this is specially
84
common in companion birds: most of them have antibiotics in their drinking water for any excuse. Most of these medicines are available at pet shops or similar places and are just bought and added to food or water without any kind of control. Nowadays, the biggest problem is not damaging the health of one animal, but the improper disposal of the medicine, specially if it is an antibiotic. Where do those remains go if we just throw them to the dustbin or down the WC? They go, via water, to the ground. From the ground they are absorbed by the roots of the vegetables we eat. So, there we have vegetables enriched in antibiotics. We all know antibiotics create bacterial resistance. What we have now is “super clever” bacteria which learned through a real Darwinian selection how to defeat antibiotics. So, what are we going to do in 20 years, when antibiotics won’t work any more? Since the 80’s no more new antibiotics are been developed (despite some new formulations are available). If medicines (specially antibiotics), are used without any kind of control, the will become useless in the best case scenario. The levels of hormones or hormone-like substances at the milk of lactating women and children blood are alarming. Anything we leave at the environment will remain there, and sooner or later it will get accumulated in the plants we are going to eat, in a direct or non direct way (through the meat of the animals that have eaten those contaminated plants). Here is a link with additional info: https://qz.com/657514/ So, please, use antibiotics only when they are absolutely necessary, and only when prescribed by a professional. Finally we would like to remind cats owners that, from March 2016, rabies injection is mandatory in cats, even if they are not going to travel abroad.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
CATTLE EGRETS
Anyone wandering in or around the Clot at sunset this winter cannot fail to have noticed flocks of large white birds flying into the main pool. You'd think they were flying in there to spend the night, and you'd be quite right – up to 100 of these birds congregate for safety in the reeds - even though the reedbed roost capacity has been somewhat reduced recently due to the much-needed clearance operations of the Clot authorities. These white birds are mostly Cattle Egrets, and this is a species which can be considered one of the most successful colonists in the world, having spread from its origins in Africa, Asia and here in the Iberian Peninsula to all seven continents. This is one of those birds whose name really does do what it says on the tin. Having evolved to feed alongside elephants and buffaloes on the African savannah, the cattle egret has been quick to transfer its loyalties to domestic breeds, and will happily root around for insects among herds of cows, sheep and goats. Although it may appear at first glance to be an all-white bird, on closer examination
86 86
you will see that there are faint orange patches on some birds, and these will deepen as we approach the breeding season – you can just make out an orange patch on the head of the one in my picture, which was actually standing on the back of a goat at the time! Also note the yellow daggershaped bill, which helps to separate this bird from the similar Little Egret which is also found in the Clot in smaller numbers, but which has a darker bill, a more slender appearance and no hint of orange about its person. When they are not roosting in the Clot, they spread far and wide across agricultural land around our area, and are a common sight as you drive through the countryside. If a local farmer is ploughing a field, his tractor will be accompanied by a crowd of Cattle Egrets feeding off worms and insects disturbed by the plough, in much the same way that seagulls do back in the UK. This bird was quite unknown in Britain until recent years, the first confirmed breeding took place back in 2008, and at the time of writing reports indicate that up to 1000 individuals may now be present, and like its cousin the Little Egret, is set fair to become a common sight back at home. Whether this is down to global warming or just the natural propensity of the species to spread far and wide, it just confirms the adaptability of this successful bird. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month. Mark

As told by participant Geoff Young The third Sunday of January saw Santa Pola hosting the XXVIII half marathon. This was the sixth time I had participated in the race with each year being as good as the one before. It is a great atmosphere across Santa Pola with thousands of runners and spectator converging on the town. I managed the same finishing time as last year, but due to injury and lack of opportunity, I did very little training for this run. What does that tell you? I don't know. I planned to run at 10.00 min mile pace to give myself a chance of finishing but it was slower than I normally run. I was continuously slowing down to get back on pace. Bernart, who is 67, ran passed me at 5.5 miles and my natural inclination was to chase him down. But not this time. I may blow up and not last the distance. At 4 miles out the band is playing Highway to Hell which I thought was Apt. At 6.5 miles the next band is playing Paranoid by Sabbath. Hmmm there's a theme developing, although last year, as I was
94
passing the next band at La Cadena, they were playing "Living on a Prayer" by Bon Jovi who just happened to be singing "We're halfway there", which I was, at that point. Also at 6.5 miles, the sun came out. Now that was pleasant. From halfway I noticed my pace picking up. At 10 mile I felt strong so I upped the pace again. Bernart is behind me now but, there's a lot more in front. There will be no one going to pass me now. To be honest, at this point, all the fitter runners are way in front of me anyway, even so, I was charging down the last km like a young race horse. Another fun filled day in Santa Pola. Well done to all those involved in the delivery of this, widely regarded, event. Time for a shower, some food, then a well earned cold beer!!!
