We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

Hi everybody,

In January the 5th the magic parade for the Three Kings wil be held in every village or Town on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola, the parade will take place on the 5th at 19:00h. If you want to enjoy one of the best parades for the Three Kings you have to go to Alcoy. I hope you have enjoyed, at least, one of the many cribs on display. In Santa Pola we have a beautiful one at the Castle. I know in Torrevieja there is beautiful one too; also in Diputación building in Alicante there is an exhibition of these. In Cañada next to Villena, they make a performance of the birth and the arrival of the Three Kings to bring presents to Jesus is real theatre carried out by amateurs. This event is declared of National Tourist Interest. Once again I would like to remind you about the Santa Pola International Half Marathon which will take place on Sunday 22nd at 10:30 a.m. If you have not been yet, do please come and enjoy the unique atmosphere. The day before, on Saturday afternoon you can also enjoy the fun race for children, we call it “Mini-Marathon” but last year more than 1100 children took part in it. Also, to register for the swimming Tabarca-Santa Pola the registering process will start on February the 9th till February the 20th. To finish off, I would like to mention that next month the almond blossom will take place in la Seta Valley, covering villages like: Facheca, Famorca, Vall d’Ebo. Last year I spent a day out with my family and I was really impressed by the beauty of the blossom there. Also at the beginning of February more parades in Bocairente and Sax will take place. Bye-bye Friends. Hello Everyone, We hope you all enjoyed Christmas and New Year! We still have January 6th to look forward to with Three King parades taking place all over Spain on the evening of the 5th. Santa Pola parade starts at 19:00 and is well worth a visit. We hope you all have a happy and prosperous New Year 2018. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 8 and Casper on page 52

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Billboard/Post office: Can the council do anything about the tattered and abandoned advertising hoarding on C/Mediterraneo near the post office roundabout? it is a real eyesore and must detract from visitors´perception of GA.

While mentioning the post office, are the council really looking for a replacement for this facility, which is lacking in both capacity and opening hours? God knows how long we´ve beeen waiting for some action.

Town Hall Answer: In the first place, the complaint referring to the abandoned poster has been transferred to the Department of Infrastructures, so that they can find out if the poster is on public or private land. If it is on public land, we will proceed to request what is appropriate or that is eliminated, while if it is on private land, the owner will be asked to remove the poster. Regarding the actions that are planned related to the post office in Gran Alacant, it has now been requested to the City Council Technical Services to assess and quantify what it would cost to create a pedestrian access to the office through the road that goes up to the roundabout where the office is located. Once valued, it will proceed to the construction of said lane, given that it is one of the conditions requested by the Correos company to be able to renew the office and expand it, giving all the services that are offered in Santa Pola also in Gran Alacant.

I wonder if anyone from the Santa Pola council ever actually comes to GA to see the lack of public facilities here. How long before the next election?

Q: Taxi-driving test Hi, Firstly, the December issue is a great read as normal (especially sitting in the north of England having just been out delivering our local parish magazine, The Haydon New, on a wet, grey, miserable, cold day)...secondly a couple of questions:

Kind Regards Bert

1) is the taxi test in English or Spanish? 2) do you know if they plan on future dates

to sit the test? Regards and a happy Christmas and New Year, Steven

Why not put a camera up to catch the paint Artist or at least it may deter them from painted all over it again SAVE THE BULL

Good morning. I was wondering if you could point me in the right direction to see if I could apply for the taxi driver test as I’ve seen the ad in the December magazine and it states that the closing date was November. Kind regards, Isabelle Town Hall Answer: The exams to obtain the taxi license are made only once a year, in the month of June, being able to carry out the exam itself in any of the two co-official languages of the Comunitat Valenciana (Castella and Valenciano). However, if the possibility of obtaining a job as a taxi driver is accredited before the City Council’s Infrastructure Bureau, the City Council may consider reconvening a selective test to give more opportunities. During the year 2017, the ordinary test (June) and an extraordinary one (November) have been called, so there are no more options until next June 2018, when the respective test will be called.

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: The Black bull is back. In the past in this magazine, we have printed pictures of the black bull, who stands on the left as you leave Santa Pola on the n332 to La Marina. The sooner it is painted black; somebody comes along and covers it in graffiti. Then it is painted black again. And then it is grafted again. This goes on and on.

It seems that we read month after month of record-breaking numbers coming into our airport at El Altet, Alicante. The airport is now trying to buy up farmland to extend its capacity. ********** Road surfacing in Spain seems to take place overnight. The strip of road that includes the bad left turn into Santa Pola from Gran Alacant was completely newly laid overnight. Out here they do not seem to use stone chips as sometimes in the UK, so you hardly notice anything has taken place the next day. ********** Feedback last month about. car hire companies ripping off customers seems to be happening with many firms. You do not seem safe whomever you book with. So maybe we will have to video the whole car

inside and outside and whilst picking up and taking the car back. Sad times. *********** New speed signs approaching Gran Alacant have reduced speeds to 60kph. Arriving to and leaving Gran Alacant will not no effect on us. The restriction is only between the on and offs of the urbanisation. There are now also speed cameras on the approach at the 80km signs, so be careful. ********** Many of us are aware of the state of the derelict hotel in Arenales. Geoff sent me a few pictures of when the hotel was in its heyday. Notice the lack of buildings in the area at that time.

Helping to promote Santa Pola football club began when myself and one of the other players, James, from our Gran Alacant Oldies Walking football Club, met with representatives from Santa Pola Football Club. One of which was the clubs President Santa Pola football had seen a report of our club that I had printed in the Santa Pola newspaper for the Spanish, and wondered what this walking football was all about, as they had not seen it before. Chris and Laura at Gran Alacant Properties on Gran Alacant already sponsor various teams at Santa Pola and with Chris coming to our walking football sessions, the two clubs were put together at GA Properties office and Laura helped with any language barrier, so thanks to them both. The football club which you can see more about on their website at http://www.santapolacf.es were keen to integrate with us and make us part of their other activities, as they already help with a Ladies football team, and youngsters football, and suggested we could become part of their publicity, even with a slot on their website. We, in turn, could point football fans on Gran Alacant to their stadium to join in with their regular support. We had already been contacted by a lad of 22 years who would love to get into the Santa Pola football club, he had been down to them but found it a bit difficult because of the language barrier. We have now put him in contact with the right people at the club, who will be able to help him. They already have many players of varying nationalities. In fact at one time, the Santa Pola goalkeeper was an American. So, after a very good meeting, we will start to help each other and meet again after Christmas as they may come and film us players in readiness for their upcoming section on their website of all of the sections they are working with. Why not go down to the Santa Pola stadium to watch a match. We have been in the past and you can if you wish, take a seat in their main stand, which runs along one side of the stadium. ************ If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

An elderly Italian man who lived on the outskirts of Rimini, Italy, went to the local church for confession in 1960. When the priest slid open the panel in the confessional, the man said: "Father, during World War II, a beautiful Jewish woman from our neighborhood knocked urgently on my door and asked me to hide her from the Nazis. So I hid her in my attic." The priest replied: "That was a wonderful thing you did, and you have no need to confess that." "There is more to tell, Father. She started to repay me with sexual favors. This happened several times a week, and sometimes twice on Sundays." The priest said, "That was a long time ago and by doing what you did, you placed the two of you in great danger, but two people under those circumstances can easily succumb to the weakness of the flesh. However, if you are truly sorry for your actions, you are indeed forgiven." "Thank you, Father. That is a great load off my mind. I do have one more question." "And what is that?" asked the priest. "Should I tell her the war is over?''

British Monarchy Anyone who knows me well enough, understands just how much respect I have for the British Royal Family. Ever since I was a small child, I would sit, transfixed on the television, whenever the Queen came on. Of course I have never met Her Majesty, but this Lady meant something to me. Apart from my own family, the Queen, was the constant in my life; the woman that never went away. Like a lot of British people, I felt I had a bond with Her, that was personal, enduring with real depth. The Queen was the person that held all of us together as a Nation, a mother figure and a Head of State, that never put a foot wrong. Most people at one stage or another, including me, have dreamt of having tea with the Queen at Buckingham Palace and like most people, It has or never will happen. We live Worlds apart; I do however, respect and acknowledge her and the Royal Family, for the work they do, benefiting us all. As Head of State, at 92 years old, she has worked tirelessly for her Country, all her life, 65 years as Queen, she is the only Monarch most of us have ever known; still showing no signs of slowing down. I am often criticized for my Royalist views; in 2017 it is not fashionable to support the Queen and her family, certainly not, among my generation. I have often been ridiculed for my opinions, by people who have no concept of the workings of a modern European Monarchy. The detractors, will often only see the surface trappings, enjoyed by a privileged few, but beneath this gilded cage, the real business of Monarchy is hard at work, making all of our lives a little better. I am well aware of the work that is carried out by the Queen and others, far over and above any other Head of State! It was about a week ago, I was in Carabassi,

32

having a rather heated discussion about the Royal Family with a fellow Expat, part of the course when you live in Spain. A lot of us like to discuss Britain, the state of the Nation and links to a Country, we used to call home. It just so happened, that Prince Harry had just announced his engagement to Maghan Markle, so all matters Royal were on our minds. The main attack, against the Queen, Prince Philip and others, was, just what do they do and what are we paying for? The Queen and the Royal Family costs 56p for each per person in the UK annually, which works out at approximately 34 million pounds per annum. 24 percent down, on 2008/9 figures, in real terms. If we compare that expenditure to that of our nearest European neighbour France, we see a marked difference. France spends 103.5 million pounds annually on its Presidency, more than three times as much. The Queens personal fortune, estimated at 340 million pounds is a small fraction compared to the richest Royal Family in Europe, Lichtenstein, estimated at 4.9 billion pounds. Further afield, Thailand’s Monarch for example has a fortune worth, 20.8 billion pounds, making the net worth of our Head of State, seem tiny in comparison. Much of the wealth owned by generations of British Monarchs (The Crown Estate,) was surrendered to the state in 1760, by George III, in exchange for civil list payments, that continue to this day. The Crown Estate is valued at approximately 14 billion pounds and is the biggest land owner in the UK. The income generated from this organisation, is 285 million pounds Per annum; remember, this was land owned by the monarch. If one deducts the payments from the Civil List, as a Nation, Britain gains 249 million pounds in income from these holdings. On that basis alone, each person pays 3.80 pounds less in tax per year, just because they have a Monarch. The Monarchy is still the biggest tourist earner, with most visitors sighting the Queen and others, as the reason they were visiting the

UK. Here an estimated half a billion pounds is generated in income. Other benefits of a Monarchy, include a boost for the fashion industry, through clothes warn by the Royal Family as well as an extra injection of money, into the economy through one off royal events; all producers of income for the British tax payer. Already my Head of State is generating more money for UK plc, than she is taking from the Civil List, far more! One of the biggest beneficiaries from the Monarchy are charities. Members of the Royal Family are Patrons to many charitable trusts, throughout the UK. In 2012 the Queen was Patron of 510 charities, generating an income, estimated at 1.4 billion pounds, a huge figure by anyone’s standards. the Queen and members of the Royal Family have promoted a culture, where giving money and time for the good of others is a normal thing to do. As a person who has volunteered myself in the past, I can confirm that, part of my dedication was due to the recognition given to volunteering, by the Queen. As a role model, Her Majesty offers an outlook on life, that all of us should aspire to. Her work ethic, even at 92 years old, sense of duty, responsibility and belief in the work that she champions, is a role call of her dedication. This Lady is a beacon for all of us and we should never forget, just what she has done for the British nation. It is easy to dismiss her as irrelevant, until you begin to scratch the surface, of just what she actually does. Elizabeth II is a stickler for routine; she wakes every morning at 8am. After a light breakfast she will then deal with all her correspondence, followed by her dispatch boxes, which include important Government papers, that need Her Majesty’s oversight, opinion or signature. After lunch she will then deal with matters relating to the monarchy, royal palaces and staff; this is all on top of numerous public

engagements, overseas visits and yearly events, that fill the royal calendar. The Queen lives a busy life, which benefits all of us, who call her majesty head of state. The most important advantage to the Nation is continuity and stability. In a changing World, with trouble around every corner, unelected autocratic leaders, war, revolution and turbulence, the Queen has remained steadfast in her position as Head of State, not only in Britain, but also fifteen other Nations. The Monarchy has remained in its current form since the seventeenth century, after the civil war. The stability we enjoy is due to the position of the crown in the structure of society. The monarch remains the check and balance, that binds the nations of the United Kingdom together. While other monarchies fell across the World, Britain remained in a position of strength, united under a single figure head, leaving the politicians to govern. Her Majesty is the glue that holds all British people together. The key to the success of the British constitutional monarchy, is its ability to adapt to change, while in the face of disaster, other royal houses, refused to admit the need to evolve. The line of succession is secure for another hundred years, as younger royals take up the roles, HM can no longer execute; the future looks bright! The next time, any one of us sits and ponders about the Royal Family, dismissing their relevance, mocking their abilities and denying their worth, we should all remember, just what their value is. Would Britain be the country it is today without them? I doubt it! The Queen herself remains the best public servant we have; we all owe her a great deal. Public opinion regards her highly, more now than ever. Whether you agree with me or not, one thing is for sure, the Monarchy is here to stay, at least in my lifetime and probably yours!

DRAMA IN A TEACUP

The Visitors

The voices had stopped. He had not been able to make out what they had been saying, their accents were strong, and different, not ones with which he was familiar. The silence was palpable with only gentle sighing sounds coming from those who still slept. Suddenly the peace was broken by a knock at the door. Well, door-like structure that was set into the wall opposite the small window. He had noticed, even in the poor light when they had been ushered in by the man who met them, that the door was roughly made and held closed only by a piece of rope attached to a peg. It could be opened from either side. And yet the un-announced visitors had knocked. If they

The sound of voices outside the door was muted, but still it woke him from his sleep. He had been listless since they stopped. His travelling companions lay asleep on the makeshift bed, which kept them from the cold floor. The space was dark, with only the very small amount of light from the starlit sky, seeping in through the small window in one wall. The cold air sill held the aroma of other occupants that had only recently left, but that he knew were to return. He had not been keen to make the journey, knowing how dangerous and arduous it would be and he felt guilty that this place was the best he could find for them in which to rest. They had discussed the option of waiting until the weather improved, making the journey more bearable but the weather was unrelenting and they had an appointment to keep. Noone was supposed to know they were here; could it just be someone else hoping to share their space. Not everyone on their journey had been friendly towards them, they were outsiders and he was wary of who might be there, at the door.

had meant harm, would they not have just quietly opened the door and entered? The murmured sounds of hushed conversation started again. He felt certain that the visitors would not be leaving until they gained entry and he decided it was best to place himself between them and his companions, and confront them while they remained outside. The door was covered by a heavy curtain which had helped to keep the chill air from entering the small room through the gaps in the door. He had considered using it as a blanket when he first curled up on the bed but it seemed to be effective where it was. Taking a deep breath and preparing for confrontation, he pulled the curtain aside and was immediately surprised by the light that shone through the gaps in the door. The visitors must be carrying bright torches. There was now enough light to enable him to see the makeshift sleeping arrangements. The bareness of the space made him feel even more depressed about his inability to provide something better. Lifting the rope that held the door closed, he took a deep breath and pulled it open and was blinded by the brightness of the light that shone from behind the three figures that were now silhouetted in the doorway. They were well dressed but he could not guess from where they had come, his eyes could not make out the style of their clothing. The tall figure on his right spoke, in the accented voice he had heard earlier; “We know you have a child in there.” The smaller, darker figure in the centre said, in a calm, gentle soothing voice; “We have come from afar, bearing gifts.”

Lets start 2018 with good intentions and new dishes. It has been very cold lately, so lets keep making hot dishes. This month I have decided to make Beef Stew with red wine. Hope you enjoy it, Mayka xxx

Ingredients

Let’s Start! Chop carrots, peel and finely chop the onion and garlic. Pour olive oil into a large pot and heat on medium heat. While oil is heating, season the beef with salt and pepper and coat with flour. Add the beef into the pot and brown. Then remove the beef from the pot and set aside. Add the carrots, onions and garlic in the same oil and cook utill the onions turn transparent. Chop the tomato and add to the pot. Add the meat to the pot too. Raise heat to high and add red wine, cook for few minutes, then add the water and bay leaf. Bring to a boil then lower the heat. Simmer loosely covered for 2 hours stiring occasionally, adding water if needed. Add salt and pepper if needed. Serve very hot with crusty bread. Enjoy xxx

AVDA.MEDITERRANEO Hot for her husband A couple were sitting at the breakfast table on the morning of their golden wedding anniversary. The husband said to the wife, ‘Just think, we have been married 50 years’. ‘Yes”, she replied. “Fifty years ago today, we were sitting at this same breakfast table and we were stark naked”! “What do you say we get naked again for old times sake?” he said. So they stripped off and sat down naked at the breakfast table. ‘Honey’ gasped the old lady breathlessly, “I have to tell you, my breasts are as hot for you today as they were 50 years ago.’ “I am not surprised” he answered.”One is in your coffee and the other one is in your porridge’!!! Out & About with Star & Ashlee Winter fun in Alicante Hi , my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 9 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. We have had an extremely fun filled December, including Ashlee turning 8, a couple of trips to see Santa and by the time you read this a visit from him too. Other than seeing the Big Man, one of the highlights of our month was an afternoon/evening trip into Alicante to visit the Ice Skating Rink and Snow Slide.

These two attractions will be open until Sunday the 7th of January 2018 and are operating from 1000 until 1400 and 1600 until 2300 Mondays to Thursdays and 1000 until 1400 and 1600 until 0000 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Ice Skating Rink is where the Ayuntamiento (Town Hall) is, just behind the Esplanada and the Snow Slide is near Corte Ingles, where the British Embassy used to be. To spend 45 mins on the Ice Skating Rink was only €6 and for €8 we got a ticket that also included 3 rides down the Snow Slide.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE

Out & About with Star & Ashlee First stop was the Ice Skating Rink and although Ashlee and Miriam started off slowly and cautiously, it wasn´t long before they found their feet and were confident to let go of the rail and go together and alone away from the edge. The rink has been created inside a fairly large Gazebo, it has a Winter theme and in the centre is a Christmas Tree. Although there were quite a lot of people there, it wasn´t too crowded and there was a monitor on the ice to help anyone who fell. The girls really enjoyed themselves as they went further away from the edge and faster and faster around the Ice. When their 45 minute session had finished, they both had rosy cheeks and big smiles on their faces. We then headed in the direction of the Snow Slide via the infamous Mushroom Street, where the girls

Out & About with Star & Ashlee

57 57

Out & About with Star & Ashlee

had fun following the yellow brick road shouting “it´s like in the Wizard of Oz”, as well as in the mushroom houses and on the slides. We got to the end, turned the corner and not far away was the Snow Slide.

58

Ashlee and Miriam were super excited and couldn´t wait to go down it. They showed their tickets and then they were off to the top dragging and pushing their joined tyres all the way. Their excited screams were

Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE

Out & About with Star & Ashlee really great to hear, and they came whizzing down so fast it was really difficult to take pictures!!!! Off they went again taking it in turns to be the one in the front ring and when their 3 rides were finished …… well it was only a few more euros, so off they went again for another 3 rides!!!! To finish off a great afternoon we grabbed some fresh churros and hot chocolate which we ate whilst watching a nearby street entertainer create giant bubbles in a nearby park. It was a lovely warming end to a cold and Wintery afternoon. So why not pop into Alicante before the festive period

is over and treat yourselves to a whizz around the ice or a ride, or three, on the snow slide. They really are great fun and remember they will be there until Sunday the 7th of January 2018.

Ashlee and I hope that you have all had a lovely Christmas and New Year and want to thank all the people who read our article. We have been stopped many times around Gran Alacant by people we know, and people we don´t, who all say that they enjoy reading about our adventures, so thank you all. Our aim was to encourage you to follow in our footsteps, go Out and About and discover more about this place we all love to live in. We hope that you will continue to share our adventures in 2018 …. who knows where we will be going next ... Join us next month for some more fun “Out and About” Bye for now, Star and Ashlee xxx

ANIMALS ARE NOT THINGS It will also be necessary to modify legal regulations about divorce for deciding about legal custody of the animal, in a similar way to children. We are more and more interested in animal protection and welfare in Spain. We can’t stand an animal living locked We are starting 2018 with good news: Spanish Parliament supports the proposition of considering animals as alive beings, not things. The definitive law is not ready yet, because it takes several months to approve a law; during this time some aspects of the legal text may be modified, added or removed. The most relevant thing is all the parties voted “yes”, so, it looks like no party is going to veto the law. Some other European countries, such as France, Portugal or Sweden, made this legal modification in the past in order to consider animals as alive beings. This modification of Spanish Civil Code (Penal Code had this modification recently) will affect, for example, Ley Hipotecaria (Mortgage Act), and Ley de Enjuiciamiento Civil (Civil Trial Law). What are the modifications?

or chained for life; our pets must be well treated and cared, and we must demand right protection for them. Of course, an improved protection, care and dignity for animals, imply more responsibilities and obligations for people. We must be committed to our pets (and the rest of the animals) welfare, and one of the ways to do it is to take part in campaigns, with our signature, or attending demonstrations. On Jan 21st there will be a demonstration in Alicante that will ask for toughening penalties for animal abuse. This is a good opportunity for starting a new year supporting animal protection.

A Rare Breed A woman was leaving a coffee shop with her morning coffee when she noticed the most unusual funeral procession approaching the town cemetery. A long black hearse was followed by a second hearse about 50 feet behind. Behind the second hearse was a solitary woman walking a pit bull on a leash. Behind her were over 200 women all walking single file. The woman couldn't stand the curiosity. She respectfully approached the woman walking the dog and said, "I'm so sorry for your loss, and I know now is a bad time to disturb you, but I've never seen a funeral like this. Whose funeral is it?" The woman replied, "Well, that first hearse is for my husband, my dog attacked and killed him". "Well, who is in the second hearse?" she inquired further. "My mother-in-law." the woman answered, "She was trying to help my husband when the dog turned on her." A poignant and thoughtful moment of silence passed between the two women. "Can I borrow the dog?" asked the inquisitive woman. "Get in the queue."

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

BLACK REDSTART

Everybody knows the House Sparrow, you probably have them around your house or you encounter them when your are having a meal at an open air restaurant, where they attempt to look as cute as possible in order to attract a stray crumb, or recklessly dive-bomb your table at the risk of a good swatting. You can't miss their cheerful/ irritating (delete as appropriate) calls when the sun comes up every morning, and you're probably so used to the sound that you hardly notice it any more. But those who listen with a little more care might have noticed that amidst the Sparrow overture each morning, there is another sound which has only been present from around the beginning of November. It's a sort of whistle followed by a harsh note - “whee, chack” it goes, sometimes with a stuttering series of chacks, and you might wonder what kind of sparrow is making that noise. And if you look carefully, you'll see that the sound is coming from a slightly larger and far tidier bird than the usual scruffy sparrow. This is the Black Redstart, which is a common winter visitor to our area, and which seems to appreciate the concrete jungles of our urbanisations. Unlike the sparrows, their diet is specialised towards insects, grubs and the occasional seeds, which is why we don't get Black Redstarts

86 86

mooching around cafe tables. They tend to sit high up on our buildings and observe ll the goingson down below, taking frequent flights to catch passing insects, and many of our urbanisation birds will spend the day feeding in the Clot, returning in the evening as they go to roost. At first glance, it looks like a very dull bird, but if you look carefully it has a bright orange-red tail, which it flutters continuously when at rest. The rest of the bird is a smoky-grey colour, which in the male birds will gradually wear down to give it a black face-mask and chest, and lighter-coloured wings, but most of the ones you will see here are like the example in my photograph. For breeding purposes, the Black Redstart used to specialise in remote rocky areas, but after the Second World War in the UK they thrived in bomb site and quarry areas. They have since shown a preference for industrial areas, particularly those which have become somewhat run-down, and also surprisingly enough they seem to like nuclear power stations! Never very common back in Britain, there are probably fewer than 100 breeding pairs – the birds that we see here in Gran Alacant and elsewhere are from the much larger Central European population. They will be gone from our area by the end of March, although a few remain in higher and more northerly areas of the Iberian peninsula. Their Spanish name is Collirojo Tizon. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.
