Hi everybody,

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

On January the 5th the magic parade for the Three Kings will be held in every village or Town on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola, the parade will take place on the 5th at 19:00h. Come and enjoy the magic and happiness with the little ones, it’s nice to see all kids with smiles on their faces. If you want to enjoy one of the best parades for the Three Kings you have to go to Alcoy, for many people it is simply “magical”. I hope you have enjoyed, at least, one of the many cribs on display. In Santa Pola we have a beautiful one at the Castle. There is a also a very nice display in Torrevieja as well as in Diputación building in Alicante. In Cañada next to Villena, they make a great performance of the birth and the arrival of the Three Kings who bring presents to Jesus. The performance is carried out by amateurs and takes place in the theatre. This event is declared of National Tourist Interest. Once again I would like to remind you about the Santa Pola International Half Marathon. It will take place on Sunday 20th at 10:30 a.m. Do not miss this sport event! Come and enjoy the unique atmosphere! The day before, on Saturday afternoon you can also enjoy the fun race for children, called Mini-Marathon. To finish off, I would like to mention that next month the spectacular almond blossom takes place in la Seta Valley, covering villages like: Facheca, Famorca, Vall d’Ebo etc. Last year I spent a day out with my family and I was really impressed by the sheer beauty of the blossom. Also, in the beginning of February more parades will take place in Bocairente and Sax. Bye-bye Friends. Hello Everybody, Hope you all had a great Christmas and New Year. As most of you had seen me out and about, I got a lot of photos of you enjoying some great nights out in Gran Alacant ... and there was a lot them. What a great place to spend Christmas and New Year !!! (see pictures inside the magazine) … you’ll see what I mean. Hope you all have a happy and prosperous New Year 2019

Have a good month, Ged & Lou

Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 11 and Casper on page 22

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Calle Malta Hi Ged & Lou, Hope you are both well. After several years trying to have the very badly potholed Calle Malta resurfaced, before someone injures themselves, the counsel have obviously no interest on using the money we all pay out every year to make good our roads, which are appalling. I have added photos of the bad areas of Calle Malta, in fact some of the potholes within potholes are at a depth of 8cm & 9.5 cm. Can you please once again ask the counsel to take a serious look at Calle Malta & then can they keep us informed as to what action they intend to take. Indeed they must understand that if, due to the depth of the potholes, someone on a Scooter, motorbike, cycle or even a car has an accident due to the said potholes they will be held responsible for any injury or damaged caused! Especially as most people have to drive on the wrong side of the road to avoid damaging their tyres or suspension. This is a busy road due to off urbanisation drivers using it it as a rat run. Regards Bill Town Hall Answer: Your complaint, as well as the photos attached, have been transferred to the Infrastructure Department so as a technician will visit the road and inform about the measures to take in order to solve the problem and prevent any future possible accident. Q: Closing times and decibels Hi Ged & Lou I would like to know the regulation concerning the closing times of public places in Gran Alacant. By "public places" I mean restaurants, pubs, cafè and bars. I would also like to know if there is a rule that defines the degree of noise (decibels)

6

of the music that is usually played in these rooms. I am aware that during the summer months, these activities are necessary for the economy of our city and the people living and working there, maybe I am wrong, but I have reason to believe that these activities continue noisily and are extended beyond the permitted limits and obviously disturb the public peace. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work uou are doing! B.G.G. Town Hall Answer: Regarding to the question, the activities related to public places are regulated by the Law 14/2010, in which timetables, noise levels and many other aspects are organized and categorized, depending on the activity itself (it is not the same case the activity of a bar and the activity of a restaurant).

BARRYS BITS OF NEWS Writing this in early December. It is strange to ride around and see the farmers, at this time of the year, in the fields with their workers bringing in the crops, not only in one field bringing them in but in the next field planting again.

********** Out here us Brits love to get hold of the free English newspapers. At one time we must have had several to get hold of during different days of the month. But

ZEST RAISED WHOOPING 1100€ FOR ELCHE CHILDREN’S HOME

ZEST Bar, URB. Sierra Mar presented Elche Children’s Home with a donation of 1100€ and 20€ shopping voucher and a collection of clothes and toiletries.

ZEST raised 3600€ for good causes in 2018 & would like to say big thanks to all that helped. unfortunately, just recently, two of the most popular, the Courier and the Round Town News have closed down. ********** Q: Weeds Sorry to have to start off with the usual rant about the weeds all growing through the stones on the banking between the first roundabout and the one with the fountain. Why cant these weeds be included on a monthly basis, or use harmless weed killer. This is one of the main roads into Gran Alacant so looks so bad, to so many visitors.

********** GRAN ALACANT OLDIES WALKING FOOTBALL club ... Are expanding. We are now looking for home games on an astro turf pitch in Santa Pola which will be used for those players that would like to play more competitively and on a bigger pitch. Doug will be running these games, you can contact me on laneinspain@hotmail.com ********** WHAT ANNOYS YOU, (apart magazine writers,) LET US KNOW!

from

I will start it off this month with… We sat down at a coffee shop right on the harbour front at Santa Pola. There were plenty of tables, some in the shade and some in the sun. We picked one in the sun and ordered our drinks.

Town Hall Answer: Related to the weeds, the Town Hall is going to hire more than 15 gardeners in order to prevent this kind of situations, specially in Gran Alacant, where the affected area is bigger than the affected on in Santa Pola.

A couple then sat down beside us, with their dog, and sat, like us, in the sun. They then decided that the dog was hot laying in the sun, so, instead of moving to a shady table, they asked the waiter to put up the sunshade so that THEY and us, were now in the shade. Bl**dy selfish. ********** It is amazing out here to read in the local papers; just how many drug gangs are

PANTO star wins M.A.B.S. Giant Hamper Our very own nurse knick knick (Clive) was the winner of a giant Christmas Hamper drawn at Dick Turpins Bar on Sunday 9th of December to a packed bar inside and out. The evens was put together by our very own Margaret Smith who got customers and friends to donate Christmas bits for the hamper. Other smaller prizes were also won which added to excitement of a cracking afternoon. Christmas Secret Santa presents were handed out and mince pies, sandwiches and sausage rolls kept us going while everyone sang their hearts out to a range of Christmas carols. The amazing sum raised was 602 euros, which will go to the M.A.B.S. Hospice fund. Thank you all who gave up their Sunday afternoon to support this wonderful cause and the owners and staff for taking such good care of us. Thanking you all for your support and wishing you all a happy and healthy New Year Your M.A.B.S. Fundraiser Jean, Charity number 7261 broken up. It seems that the police are very active. Also again. News in the local press saying the number of immigrants that still appears on many of the Spanish beaches, even near to us at Santa Pola and all of the way down the coast. ********** OTHER NEWS: Q: FISH LUNCH We had a wonderful fish lunch in Santa Pola today and I asked the waitress what the fish was called she wrote it down - Gallina. Which to me translates to chicken. Can you help? Is this just the local affectionate term for a lovely fish ' the chicken of fish'? Or a local name for a speciality? I've searched the Internet but can't find it, it had a wide horizontal low mouth and could have been pink but beyond that I can't offer any help.

GA Advertiser Answer: After a little bit of research we found that Gallina (apart from chicken) is also a Spanish name for Piper Gurnard - an ugly fish with big head, bulging eyes and scary fins but it’s very tasty according to some celebrity chefs.

THE LEPRECHAUN RESTAURANT & BAR RAISED 300€ FOR DEBRA BUTTERFLY CHILDREN

The Leprechaun Restaurant & Bar in Santa Pola del Este raised 300€ by holding a Christmas Party for Debra Butterfly Children on 14th of December. Additional thanks goes to Clair Chappell Clark, Coachtrips Sl, Susan Taylor, Helga Hægeland for their donations.

Harmonious Healing

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured Happy New You!! 5 GENTLE REMINDERS THAT WILL HELP YOU HAVE A HAPPY YEAR AHEAD!

We all have areas in our lives that can bring stress and when we put pressure on ourselves it puts the stress levels up but it doesn’t mean we have to hold onto them. The signs of stress aren’t always obvious but the effects can manifest in our lives in many ways. And chronic illnesses are very often stress related. On a better note, we don’t have to allow it in our lives, we have the choice, we allow it in, so we can quite simply send it on its way back out! It’s a mindset!! That aside, of course we will have areas where we can’t avoid stress and by the practice of a positive mindset we will cope a lot better than if we don’t.

Happy New Year to you all and I hope you all had a lovely festive period! So here we are, 12 brand new months await us, brand new opportunities so let’s start off on the right foot! Many of us start the year making some resolutions, and it is a great way to start your focus but this year try simply changing the mindset rather than making demands to yourself! Some of us have had the same resolutions for the past 5 years and still haven’t seen them through. So this year try a new approach to your resolutions… Resolutions Vs Mindset At the first hurdle of stress, for many of us, our resolutions go out the window and we grab that cigarette or that chocolate that we promised we wouldn’t do!!

Making small lifestyle changes can help us to combat our woes. In NLP & Life Coaching when dealing with a client who doesn’t cope well with stress my favourite way to work with them is the simple structure of the 5 gentle steps. 1. Just Breathe: So it seems pretty obvious right? But to actually breathe correctly is something most of us fail to do. Breathing is controlled from our subconscious mind so most are unaware of how we are doing it. I say, breath from the belly, not from the chest, take it right down. The benefits of breathing properly to the body & mind is great. Try it! 2. Get Sleep: When we stress, our sleep can be the first thing to suffer. So do breathing exercises from your belly before bedtime to aid

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured a relaxing nights sleep. Try some nice lavender oil on your neck and tummy area to help, or a relaxing essential oil bath to unwind from a hard day at work. 3. Meditate: Are you aware of the mind-body-spirit connection? It is important in life to learn this in yourself. When you meditate it relaxes the mind & body and allows you to be completely in the present moment. Even if you are not spiritually minded, don’t be scared from it, meditation is an amazing tool for lowering stress, increasing relaxation and making you calm. It s amazing what you also learn about yourself and what you are willing to put up with when you start some regular meditation. 4. Exercise: Your body needs it, whatever you choose to do just do it, brisk walk to the shops or on the way back from school, some sit ups, a little yoga, leg day, swimming, boot camp, just get they endorphins working your mood. 5. Be Positive: I use the “calm anchor” approach in my coaching. As I said previous, life doesn’t always turn out the way we would like and we all experience setbacks. Always try and have as positive a mind as you can. In other words, just be kind to yourself. The “calm anchor” approach helps you to do this. Mentally go to a time when you felt really good about yourself, really confident, happy and on top of your game, really hold that feeling and feel how it makes you feel.

This tip helps calm the mind & the breathing and helps us think more clearly. Don’t allow yourself to be limited, instead be your most courageous you and see how great you can feel. Start your resolutions this year simply by doing these 5 gentle reminders and you may find that this is the year you see these resolutions through!! Have a fabulous year ahead!! HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

Pico de los Cenajos, Sierra de la Pila, Murcia My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and the possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from the top of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take lots of pictures on our hikes. We left our car near the church in La Garapacha, Fortuna, Murcia. Google Maps finds Parroquia de la Garapacha nicely and gives good driving instructions If you drive via Fortuna, you start to see signs indicating your route to La Garapacha. We parked our car close to the signs near the church. There are few parking places there. Don’t walk to the church to your right, continue left from the signs. You’ll see a small hill going left, with the sign Sierra de la Pila. Follow those signs through the village. You go up and come back down the same way on this hike.

Driving Time: 1hour 10mins Walking Time: 3,5 hours Google maps directions: Parroquia de la Garapacha, Lugar Corró de la Iglesia, 0 S/N, 30629 Garapacha (la), Espanja

This sign indicates straight up, but you are supposed to choose right. There are opaque white/yellow route signs visible occasionally. If you see one, you know you are on the right track.

When you see cross roads with asphalt going right and dirt road going left, choose the left dirt road. From this point you can walk fairly long uphill without the risk of getting lost from the route.

After walking for about 3 km, you’ll see this cross road with the fallen sign. Hopefully the sign has been fixed. Choose right here. You’ll see a small path going down a bit to a small valley, and

36

THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

then it starts to climb up. That’s us on the small path and the peak you see behind is Pico de los Cenajos. You need to walk along the path and after going down a bit you’ll reach another asphalt road.

Next month we go on foot again. Hasta luego, Heidi & Olli

CHECK LIST

If you look closely you’ll see that there’s s narrow path on left side going into the woods. That’s when you are coming down when going to the peak. And when coming back down that’s what you need to find to be able to get to the other side of the mountain where you climbed up. The Rest of the way is easy. There are good signs to help you. You can choose to go to the meteorological ball or the mirador which we chose.

Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

Pestiños

Hi All, Christmas is all most finished, but we are still waiting for the Three Kings to arrive. I just love making sweets for that night, especially my favourite Pestiños and that's what we are going to make. Hope you all enjoy them and Welcome 2019 xxx

Let’s Start! To flavour the olive oil, in a skillet, heat the 3/4 cup olive oil over high heat. Add the orange zest and fry for about 2 minutes, or until the zest begins to turn golden. Remove from the heat and let cool to room temperature. Strain the oil through a finemesh sieve placed over a heatproof bowl, discarding the zest. Stir in the 1 teaspoon sesame seeds and the aniseeds. In a saucepan, combine the butter, lard, 1/3 cup water, and the wine and place over medium-low heat. When the fats have melted, add the cinnamon, salt, and lemon zest and stir well with a wooden spoon. Stir in the flour all at once and then the seasoned oil an immediately remove the pan from the heat. Using the wooden spoon, promptly and vigorously mix the flour with the liquid until the dough is firm and free of all air bubbles. This will take about 5 minutes. Lightly dust a work surface, preferably marble, with flour and transfer the dough to it. Knead briefly until soft and flexible, and then shape into a ball. Cover with a kitchen towel and let rest for about 1 hour. Clean the work surface, dust again with flour, and roll out into a very thin 20-inch square. Cut the dough into 4-inch squares. You will have 25 squares. Working from a corner of each square, roll up the square on the diagonal, crating a cylinder with a 1/2inch hollow centre. To prevent the fritters from unfolding when you fry them, dampen your finger and press the point of the seam to the layer beneath it, sealing it in place. Pour olive oil to a depth of 1 inch into a large skillet and heat over medium-high heat

Ingredients • 3/4 cup olive oil, plus extra for frying • Zest of 1 orange, cut into long, narrow strips • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds, plus extra for sprinkling • 1/2 aniseeds • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter • 1 tablespoon lard • 1/2 cup water • 6 tablespoons sweet white wine • Pinch of salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra for dusting • 1/2 cup honey until almost smoking. Working in batches, fry the fritters, turning as needed , for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden on all sides. Using a slotted spoon, transfer to paper towels to drain. Repeat with the remaining fritters, always reheating the oil until almost smoking before adding the next batch. Meanwhile, in a small, heavy saucepan, heat the honey with the remaining 1/4 cup water over high heat. Boil briefly, stirring constantly, until a thick, syrupy consistency forms. Remove from the heat and let cook slightly. Arrange the warm fritters on a serving plate, and spoon the honey syrup over them. Let the fritters cool completely. Serve at room temperature. Enjoy x

GIVE SOMEONE THE GIFT OF LISTENING For many people, Christmas can be a time when they feel the need to hide what they’re really feeling.

to give them the listening ear they need, can be really reassuring. “I didn’t know this person, I would never meet this person, but just by listening they made me feel a million times better” Samaritans caller Show you understand. Ask follow-up questions and repeat back the key things they tell you during the conversation.

If you’re worried about someone and don’t know how to start a difficult conversation, there are some things you can do to help them open up. Find a good time and place Respect what they tell you. If someone doesn’t want your help, don’t push them. Help the other person to think of all the options available to them, but leave the choice to them. You don’t have to fix anything. The important thing is that you let them know you’re there for them. Ask questions such as: • • • •

When – ‘When did you realise?’ Where – ‘Where did it happen?’ What – ‘What else happened?’ How – ‘How did that feel?’

The important thing to remember is to pay attention and focus only on them. Showing someone who might feel they have nobody, that there is someone who cares and wants

40

Find out how they’re feeling too. Sometimes people will talk you through all the facts of what happened and why, but never say how they actually feel. Revealing your true emotions to someone can be a huge relief. Sitting down with someone and listening to what they’re going through can really help that person. But it’s vital that you take time for yourself – hearing someone else’s worries or problems can affect you too. Remember to do the things you enjoy, and if you need to talk, find someone you can trust and confide in. If it’s easier to talk to someone other than family or friends, why not contact Samaritans? Remember, help is just a phone call away. If you’ve tried to start a conversation with someone you know and they’ve not felt completely comfortable talking about what’s bothering them, we could help. Our trained helpline volunteers will give them the time and space they need to talk about what’s troubling them. MIRROR CORNER HAPPY NEW YEAR Suddenly, we feel empowered and excited about moving into the "New Year." It's our chance to start fresh like a new baby. New Years resolutions, gym memberships, new learning objectives, loosing weight …

Does it sound familiar? Why do you make the same resolutions every year, but they always fail? I am going to give you some clues … YOU DON’T BELIEVE IN YOURSELF: You set and failed so many New Year’s resolutions in the past, that you may not even try to set any this year. You may think what’s the point of setting new goals when you are only going to fail them all over again? I know it might be hard to believe in yourself. Doubt is a nagging voice in your head that will resist any personal growth. The only way to defeat doubt is to believe in yourself. So what if you failed a time or two before? Who cares? This year you can try again BUT do it better this time! BE REALISTIC: Plans in our mind always look colourful and bright, but what happens when we try to turn them into the everyday reality? Very often we are too much thinking and

50

not enough doing. The process results in setting too many expectations and creating unrealistic goals. Perhaps it’s time to be more realistic and don’t try to fit too much into the already hectic weekly routine. In the beginning, try not to schedule more than 2 or 3 hours of new activity into your weekly schedule. Keep your objectives realistic and don´t be greedy, or you will be disappointed in the end, which will result in a lowered self-esteem and negative selfconcept. RHYTHM: Reaching goals have something to do with the rhythm. Don’t try to do too much too quickly. Slow and steady habits are better than wanting it ALL too quickly. Small changes work better because they are less intimidating. For example, do you want to loose weight? Stop it with thinking about drastic super restrictive crash diets that promise miracles in short period of time. Instead, you could introduce a little simple habit into your life such as drinking more water during the first week and introducing more fruits and vegetables into your diet. Being constant and making just one SMALL change in your daily routine creates the most change and works better in the long run. CONTEXTUALISING THE BEHAVIOUR CHANGE: This term refers to the precision, the place and time that the new chosen activity will take place. For example, if you decide to start going to the gym make sure you stick with specific days and times ... lets say every Mondays and Wednesdays while kids are in their classes. This means the same situation, the same hour and no changes. Doesn’t matter if you have another possibility, the choice has been made and it’s fixed. This will help you to stick with your new routine.

Your information will be kept in the strictest confidentiality. YOU DON’T ENJOY THE PROCESS. Is it any wonder people struggle with their weight when they see eating fruits and vegetables as a chore and exercise as a complete torture? The goal isn’t to add stress to your life, but rather to remove it. The best fitness plan is the one that we enjoy, so make getting in shape fun! Choose something that you think you will enjoy, perhaps Zumba if you love dancing. Add exercising with a good friend or two, or perhaps join a group exercise class and meet new people too! NO QUICK RESULTS: Remember that real change takes time, effort and mostly patience. It can take long time to break the old habit and even longer to master something new. Often we don’t see the results as quickly as we had imagined. We feel discouraged and start to question our goals. This is where it can all go wrong … so to stay motivated and filled with good intention and energy it’s important to celebrate even the smallest positive changes. This means you will see the sun even if surrounded by the forest and shadows. FIND QUALIFIED HELP: When you have a true determination but things gets difficult it’s natural to feel you are unable to cope with them. So consider a professional help, which will help you to cross the finishing line and achieve what you really WANT.

If there is a wish, there is a way!

Perhaps you have never thought about it this way … think about it. Being part of your way and achieving your goals (whatever they may be) is my work. This year we (Jackie from the Reiki Room and I) created a short Combined Therapy by combining our knowledge and experience to help you find your way to happiness and satisfaction. CYCLING with Bici Gran Alacant

by Olli-Pekka & James Fulcher

Bici Gran Alacant is a group for all road bike cyclists in and around Gran Alacant.

“Canal road” from Albatera to Crevillent “All the routes are downhill and with a nice tailwind! (except the bits with climbing and a headwind).” Remember to always take a sense of humour... I lived my youth close to my grand-parents farm and I have interest on farming. And it is really fascinating to see how it is done here. I guess some problems are similar between Finnish and Spanish farmers. But one challenge is totally different. Where in northern parts of the world the problem is getting excess water out of the fields. Here instead of digging ditches to get the water out, famers need to build irrigation system to get the water in. There are many water supplies in the area and a fine example of the irrigation system is the canal that runs from Abanilla to Crevillent. And there is a road next to canal to ride on.

Continue until you encounter the canal and turn right. The road takes you all the way to Crevillent. At the end of the road turn right and go straight until you reach N-340. On the left is Crevillent with many cafes to choose from. From Crevillent you can get back following CV875 until Matola where you turn right from traffic lighs to CV-857. CV-857 takes you to CV-851 and heading out right you will return to GA. https://www.strava.com/ activities/1137953156

Head out towards San Felipe Neri and from the San Feliper Neri road turn right towards Realengo. Ride through Realengo and turn right on CV-904 towards Crevillent. Just go over the overpass and take the 3rd exit from the roundabout after overpass. This road takes you all the way to Albatera. In Albatera look for a junction to the right to road CV-873 to Hondon De las Frailes.

56

If you want to get some climbing done and some extra miles you can connect from the canal road behind or over the “Embalse the Crevillent” “from bridge 6”. As you go along the Canal road you see that all the bridges have numbers which gets smaller the closer you get to Crevillent. Go over the canal at Bridge 6 and head up towards the mountains. Just follow the road with some

really steep (But short) decents and climbs. The road takes you back to Crevillent ending on a small roundabout. From the roundabout take left and go over a small bridge. After the bridge take a left up towards the hills again via Carrer De Molinas. Continue up to junction with pilgrimage sign to Orito straight. Turn right and you are on the road that will go next to the Embalse the Crevillent and join N-325. N-325 takes you downhill and back to Crevillent. https://www.strava.com/ activities/1782342940

Few things to keep in mind: • Always have something to drink with you and for a bit longer rides maybe a banana or muesli-bar • Always have a little money if you need to stop to buy food or drink • Take the phone with you • Many of the small cafés are closed on Mondays • And the most important: Wave the fellow cyclists”

You can find information about several weekly rides on our Facebook page Gran Alacant Road Cyclist “Bici Gran Alacant” and also your local bike shop For Riders have rides and events on their Facebook page.

DISTANCE: for Canal road approx. 90km. Moving time approx. 4 hours. DIFFICULTY: Easy/Medium (Medium/Hard for the Embalse Route) OUTWARD ROUTE: Realengo – Albatera – Canal Road - Crevillent RETURN ROUTE: Crevillent – CV-857 – CV-875 – CV-851 - Gran Alacant

...into THE FIRE As the grey light of dawn filtered through the trees, he was able to make out the reason for his inability to move his foot. The impact with the tree has allowed the fire extinguisher which had been under the driver’s seat to move forward, pinning his foot against the brake pedal. However much he had pulled against it, there was no chance of him being released. He began to piece together the events which led to his current predicament. Bundling the package into the back of the car; setting off and discovering the low fuel tank; stopping to ask directions and then almost colliding with the oncoming car as it careered across the bend. His seat belt was still firmly stuck and his leg hurt, but that might actually be the only positive point. At least it wasn’t broken. The radio was still working and the news only made matters worse. After the crash, the police had found the two people in the car that came so close to wiping him out, and assumed it was a hit and run leaving him as the chief suspect. They had not searched for him in the area but had widened the search to where they thought he might go for fuel. Now, the two people in the other vehicle had been identified as a couple of local villains who had stolen the car before crashing it and there was no sign of damage from another vehicle. The police were returning to the scene to look again for the vehicle which they suspected was on the same road. His vehicle! He regretted not checking the fuel gauge before setting out. He regretted stopping to ask directions. Without those two mistakes, he would never have been near that bend and would not now be trapped in a wreck, out of sight of the road. He had to get out of the car. During the night he thought he had heard scratching sounds on the car. His first thoughts were of animals hoping for an easy meal but the sounds had only lasted a few minutes. The wildlife

would have persisted in their attempts to feed. The noised had resumed and they were definitely coming from the back of the car. It might still take the police and ambulance some time to arrive. Although the lock was still refusing to budge, he began to extract himself from the seat belt. With the top part of his body now free, he could begin to work on the trapped foot. Pulling was not only painful but ineffective. Plan B, press on the brake pedal. The searing pain shot up to his thigh. Perhaps there was a fracture somewhere. It turned out to be in the brake pipes and as the fluid leaked out, the pedal moved. Reclining the car seat as far as it would go, he was able to drag himself free of the lap strap of the seatbelt. His attention how settled on opening a door. The front doors were obviously out of shape but the door behind him seemed in reasonable condition, reaching back, he pulled the door handle. The door opened. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Escape was still possible. There was sound of traffic up on the road. Vehicles were stopping and the sound of someone giving orders or directions, urged him to get out of the car. The whole plan was turning to a bag of worms. It had all seemed so simple, so well planned. Wait outside the house until the couple left by taxi for their dinner engagement, slip in through the garden entrance, lift the car keys, grab the package and stow it in the back of the car then set off for the house in the country. He couldn’t have figured on the low fuel, stopping to ask directions and this stupid accident. He dragged himself out of the back door and stood up. The leg hurt but he could still move fast enough down the slope and away from the police. It was necessary. How was he going to explain the young girl tied up in the back of the car? concludes next month ...

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Winter fun in the Alicante Bullring

Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 9 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. After the fun Ashlee had in Alicante last Winter at the Ice Skating Rink and Ice slide, we thought that we would go again. This year however, the ice skating rink and ice slide have relocated to the Plaza de Torros (Bullring) in Alicante. In order to save the costs of car parking, we parked at Plaza Mar 2 commercial centre and took the tram 2 stops to the Mercado stop. We met up with some friends and together walked 5 minutes to the Bullring. This was the first time that we had been to the bullring, we entered through a side entrance where there were bouncy castles and other amusements for the kids. Beside them was the Bullring Museum, and next to that was the entrance to the spectators area of the bullring. The tiled interior featured some of the most famous Alicante bullfighters and we were led below the concrete seats and emerged in the bullring itself. On the right hand side we could see the ice slide which was smaller than last years with the majority of the ring was devoted to the Ice Skating Rink, which was much bigger

72

than last years. There were also some chairs and tables and a catering van where you could buy burgers, drinks and snacks. We went to the Ice Rink and bought 10 tickets for €20 which the kids could use for all of the different activities. Ice Skating was 3 tickets and there were no time restrictions, the Ice Slide was 2 tickets for 4 runs down the slide and the bouncy castles were 1 ticket and again there were no time restrictions, which was great. Ashlee loves Ice Skating to she spent some time skating around and trying some of the new skills she´s learned in her Rollerskating

Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE

Out & About with Star & Ashlee open all day. Anyway, Ashlee decided that she wanted to go back on the Ice Skating rink, which was the only thing that was open all day, and this was actually a great decision because most people had left to have lunch, so Ashlee had the whole rink to herself!!!!

classes on the ice. She then joined her friend on the Ice Slide and as they went together on a giant ring, there were able to go down 8 times for 2 tickets. Next was the bouncy castles and one in particular was devoted to the popular TV show “Wipeout” and has various obstacles, slides and jumps for the kids to traverse. Ashlee and her friend spent a long time completing the whole circuit over and over again!!! We then left to grab some lunch before returning to have some more fun, however, the Ice Slide had closed until the next morning because the Ice was melting in the Sun and the Bouncy Castles were also closing for Spanish lunch time (14:00 - 16:00). I did complain about it as when I researched these activities online, it said that they would be

After tiring herself out on the ice, Ashlee and I walked back to the tram station, and when we returned to Plaza Mar 2 we did some Christmas shopping and then headed upstairs to the Kinépolis cinema to watch Ralph Breaks the Internet, in English. It was a great way to relax and finish off a fun filled day. The Ice Skating Rink and Ice Slide are open until the 6th January from 10:00 to 22:00, although the Ice Slide may close in the afternoon. Throughout the year there are numerous concerts held at the bullring especially during the Summer months and the museum is open Tuesdays to Fridays 10:30 - 13:30 and 17:00 to 20:00 and on Saturdays 10:30 to 13:30. Have a happy New Year Star and Ashlee xxx

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

LITTLE GREBES

I was going through my past archive of all the birds and animals I’ve written about for the GA Advertiser over the past few years, and was surprised to find I’d missed out on one of the easiest birds to be found in the Clot – the Little Grebe, which you are almost certain to see if you are visiting the main pool, at any time of the year. The smallest of the grebes, the Little Grebe, (which is also known in the UK as the Dabchick) is considerably rounder and more dumpy than its larger relatives, the absence of a tail and its habit of fluffing-up feathers at the rear end making it look a bit like a miniature dinghy. Little Grebes are persistent divers, either slipping below without surface disturbance or with a vigorous jump, creating a shower with their lobed feet. Dives may last up to half a minute, when you can watch the bubbles the birds make as they hunt their prey, or the birds may reappear immediately. If alarmed, a Little Grebe will submerge until only its head remains above water. At times there is fierce rivalry, with the male Little Grebes chasing each other at high speed with necks extended, water-kicking, splash-diving and skidding across the water followed by underwater attacks. In full

80 80

combat, rivals rise breast to breast in vertical posture, attacking with feet and stabbing with bills. Courtship may continue on moonlit nights, when you can also hear their trilling calls quite clearly. My picture shows a juvenile bird, with lighter colouration than the adults which are mostly dark brown, almost looking black at times, with chestnut markings on the head. There are several of these juveniles about at the moment, so you may see more in this colouration than the adult birds for the next few months. It appears to have caught some sort of larva species, they also catch fish and other small invertebrates. In the next three or four months, they will make their nests deep within the reeds out of vegetation which is mostly collected from underwater – they may make three or four nests before choosing the best one. They are very successful birds here in Spain – any open stretch of water is likely to contain a few of them, and you might also find them in irrigation ditches in farmland areas. Their breeding range extends right across central and southern Europe as far north as southern Sweden and the Baltic States. Birds on the northern fringe, where there is regular winter freezing of rivers and lakes, need to migrate southward each autumn, but our birds are strictly resident. You are unlikely to see them on land, as with feet set well back on their bodies they are more or less unable to walk! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting: www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY All of the golfers at GAGS wish everyone a Happy New Year. At this time we look forward to the new year with great expectation but before considering that in more depth we would like to take a moment to reflect on the Society during 2018. In the early part of the year a number of our core members retired from playing golf for a variety of reasons. It was Ged who suggested raising the profile of the Society through a series of articles in the GA Advertiser. The impact of these has been tremendous for us with many golfers contacting us to say they were unaware of the existence of the Society. We have been delighted to welcome many new golfers to GAGS, some will become regular golfers whilst others will help swell our numbers when they visit their holiday homes here. Many thanks to Lou and Ged for their continued support. Now looking forward to 2019, golfers will be aware of numerous, and in some instances controversial, rule changes from January. Our rules aficionados are all over these and we are well prepared to introduce them into our general play. Our expectations for the year are high and we hope all golfers have a very successful year ahead. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. . For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

BREXIT AND PETS

These last days we have been asked several times about after-Brexit new regulation for travelling with pets from UK to EU and vice versa. So far, we haven’t received any official notification at all. Veterinary College keeps every member updated about any kind of modification, not only in case of importexport laws, but every aspect we have to take into account for developing our profession legally (and there are thousands of aspects!). In case Brexit becomes real, the most probable thing is pet’s import-export regulations will be similar to the Norwegian ones (Norway is an European but non-EU country). Which are the regulations for Norway? Surprise! Exactly the same which are valid nowadays for the UK. As everybody knows, the requirements for taking a dog from Spain to the UK are: microchipping, valid rabies injection (minimum 3 weeks before travelling if it’s the first rabies, or if you let the previous one expire), and a worming treatment not earlier than 5 days and not later than 24 hours before the animal is crossing the border (or embarking when travelling by ferry). This is the British (and Norwegian) procedure. What about returning to the EU? In case of Norway, since it’s free of rabies, the only requirements are rabies and microchip. UK

is free of rabies as well (and, hopefully, it will continue like this after Brexit!), so, we sincerely don’t think you’ll be asked for extra requirements, since countries such as USA, Argentina or Russia, which are NOT free of rabies countries, are asked for any extra requirement for exporting pets to EU. Which are those “extra” requirements? Quarantines and rabies antibodies titration. These requirements are still mandatory for importing dogs, cats and ferrets from, for example, African countries. As many people will remember, those quarantines and titrations were mandatory for taking dogs, cats and ferrets to the UK (NOT from UK to EU), before more simple and modern regulations were adopted some years ago. What may happen now? We suppose pets travelling regulation will be the same (or very similar to the actual one). The worst case scenario would be returning to the old regulation with quarantines and rabies titrations. Laws can be modified every time Parliaments consider it necessary, and no law lasts forever. Anyway, what we recommend is to keep rabies injection valid (don’t let it expire), this will make all the procedure go faster in case you are asked for rabies blood test, since you are avoiding the quarantine. We also recommend you to look for info in official websites only, such as DEFRA or British Council. Don’t trust gossip! Fake news have gone too far (and produced a lot of damage), and there are people that would like to take an advantage from you by making you waste your money in unnecessary procedures. If there is any companion pet importexport regulation which is going to change after Brexit, we promise we’ll let everybody know via an article, and that article will include, of course, a copy-and-paste from the mail we may eventually receive from our College.

Happy New Year.
