We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Hi everybody and happy New Year to all of you... As every year on the 5th of January the dreams of all kids become true. The Three Kings will bring the presents they have been waiting for. In my opinion, it is fantastic to attend the Three King parade and see all children faces lit up with magic, astonishment and even fear but in all ways beautiful. The Three Kings parades will take place in every village or town on the Costa Blanca. In Santa Pola, the Three Kings parade will take place on the 5th at 19:00h. Come and enjoy the magic and happiness with the little ones. If you want to enjoy one of the best parades for the Three Kings you have to go to Alcoy, for many people is simply “The Best”. I hope you have enjoyed, at least, one of the many cribs on display. In Santa Pola we have a beautiful one at the Castle. There is also a very nice display in Torrevieja as well as Diputación building in Alicante. In Cañada next to Villena, they make a performance of the birth and the arrival

of the Three Kings who bring presents to Jesus. The performance is carried out by amateurs and takes place in the theatre. This event is declared of National Tourist Interest. Once again I would like to remind you about the Santa Pola International Half Marathon which will take place on Sunday 19th at 10:30 a.m. Do not miss this sport event! Come and enjoy the unique atmosphere! The day before, on Saturday afternoon 5p.m. you can also enjoy the fun race for children, called Mini-Marathon. To finish off, I would like to remind you that next month the parades of Moors and Christians will be held in Bocairente and Sax. In February, the spectacular almond blossom takes place inland in Costa Blanca in Seta Valley, covering villages like: Facheca, Famorca, Vall d’Ebo which are well worth visiting. Bye-bye Friends

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Toilets I live near the park on Escandinavia 2 there are public toilets but the park keeper keeps locking them, the park is busy and a lot of people come to the toilets including workers, and unfortunately are standing behind the toilets which is not good for us to see, could you please see if it is possible for them to remain open until he locks the park at night. Thank you, Barbara GA Advertiser Reply: We have made Oscar Valenzuela aware of this problem and he will look into this matter.
IMPROVEMENTS TO THE LOCAL BUS SERVICES ARE ON THE HORIZON
The meeting between municipal officials and Vectalia Group who are the new operators of the local bus services took place in the town hall of Santa Pola on the 12th of December 2010. The meeting was attended by delegate of the company, David Sastre, the director of Urban Transportation, Raúl Cantero, and Francisco Blanca, as well as the mayor María Loreto Serrano, the councilor of Gran Alacant, Óscar Valenzuela and Julio Baeza and Ana Bermejo as Councilor and Tourism technician respectively. They raised many issues including better accessibility and the relocation and improvement of the bus stops and the information displayed in them and have asked Vectalia to review the needs of residents in Pablo Iglesias, Calvario, Playa Lisa, Tamarit and Gran Alacant. They also discussed ways to improve the impact their services have on the environment. Vectalia are planning to increase the capacity of services along the Alicante to Santa Pola route at peak times and better synchronise with services from the airport, Institute and

Universities of Elche and Alicante. They will also be training their drivers so they can give detailed information about the different routes and connections, which will also be available in English. Vectalia are increasing their use of technology so that they can improve the way they plan their services, give updated information to passengers and let them use contactless cards to make payments and receive bonuses. In the long term they are working towards reducing their emissions with the help of greener vehicles.
THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL IN GRAN ALACANT COULD BE DELAYED TILL 2023 need for both of these facilities and the High School project has now gone out to tender and it is hoped that construction could be finished in 2023. According to the latest information from Oscar Valenzuela, the councillor of Gran Alacant, the new high school could be slightly delayed till 2023 now. The new plans have been completed and submitted but according to the latest information, the tender process could take lengthy 9 to 12 months, which could possibly delay the completion of the new high school to 2023 instead of 2022 as previously published. For many years the parents and AMPA from the existing primary school in Gran Alacant, have been petitioning for a new “Instituto” (high school) and a second primary school. Although plans had been drawn up under the previous City Council, they were not progressed. The new Mayor understands the urgent
The new “Instituto” will be located at the other end of the street where the existing primary school is. It will have places for 1,120 pupils and includes 24 classes for ESO studies, 8 for Bachelor studies and 4 professional workshops. These will be spread across two main buildings that will also be home to a cafeteria, a library, a multi-purpose room and staff and AMPA offices. The buildings have a highly energy efficient design and orientation and can even be extended in the future, should the need arise. Sporting facilities include outdoor tracks and courts, a covered area for spectators, a multi-purpose gym and changing rooms with showers. There will also be an enclosed private car park for teachers.
CABALGATA DE LOS REYES MAGOS FIRST TIME IN GRAN ALACANT For the first time ever, the “Three Kings Parade” will be held in Gran Alacant on 5th of January. It will start at 17:00 at the sports centre and end with the party outside the medical centre at 18:00. Chocolates and presents will be given out to children accompanied by music and DJ. THE MAIN OBJECTIVES FOR 2020 In our meeting with Oscar Valenzuela we were informed about the main objectives for 2020. 1. NEW HIGH SCHOOL The main priority in 2020 budget will be to prepare the access and road works for the new high school 2. NEW CLEANING CONTRACT the original cleaning contract for Gran Alacant was based on 6000 people. This number has since increased to 10 000 people who signed the pardon, but in reality we know about 14 000 people reside in Gran Alacant (as not everybody signed the pardon). This number further massively increases
in the summer months. So, as Oscar told us “we have to configure the new cleaning contract. Meeting with Town hall technicians, association of neighbours and various councillors and the Mayorsess, we would like to make a contract that adapts to the population of Gran Alacant today and in the future. Putting new cleaning contract together could be a lengthy process of meetings but we are hoping to have it completed and be ready before summer 2020”. 3. TRANSPORT Following our recent meetings with the local bus company Vectalia, we will continually focus on improving the transport service and connections in Gran Alacant.

FROM SMALL BEGINNINGS TO THE SUCCESS OF TODAY Gran Alacant Advertiser now in its 15th year
BARRY’S BITS this month firstly wishes all of our readers A Very Happy New Year, with this column starting 2020 with something a little different from my usual news stories. Lou and Ged asked if this month, we could enlighten the readers with how and why did this Gran Alacant Advertiser Magazine first come to fruition. Here is the story… Way back in January 2005 Sandra and myself launched our magazine.
cope with it, when I was in the UK. So, was so surprised when I took the first edition to the local printers, that he was using all of the same kind of software that I was used too, so here I was, carrying on my print career here in Spain. Our first edition was basically just an 8-page magazine printed in black ink on a blue paper. The idea was to ask readers for a ¨buy and sell any household items. The front page asked for your sofas, fridges, TVs, cars, houses, almost anything.
Barry & Sandra pictured with 1 edition st
Both of us had spent all of our lives in the print industry and when lithographic printing went digital, I was taught how to

Adverts would cost 3 or 5 Euro depending on the value of the goods for sale. Our main advertiser was Frank at Eurocars, taking 3 of the 8 pages, most of which with pictures of his cars that were for sale. A bar/ café was for sale and bus trips arranged by

Martin and Annette. The page also had an advert for property sales by us, a new villa for sale, and Funeral Plans by John and Denise. We had these few advertisers on board to help with the print costs. Also, at the time Gran Alacant was growing at a very fast pace and the urbanisation was always full of rumours, have you heard this, have you heard that. So we decided to ask readers for their questions, and we would meet up with the town hall to get answers to questions, so instead of rumours, we could find all of the answers. This is when we first met up with our councillor at the town hall, Loreto Cascales. She was such a help to the magazine and us. The demand for advertising in the next issue was so immense that it ended up a full colour magazine; full of the advertisers we were inundated with. So much so that we had to redesign the magazine and could not get it all ready for February, so the next issue came out in the March as a February/March edition. The advertising of household items went out of the window. Before the magazine Sandra and myself were looking after 15 holiday rental houses,
a business that we had built up from when we first arrived here in Spain, 17 years ago. We had to make the decision to drop the houses as the magazine was booming. Month after month getting bigger and bigger and we could not cope with both businesses. More and more advertisers were coming on board pushing up the number of pages month on month. The magazine grew and grew. We were doing everything ourselves, just the two of us, composing adverts, taking photos, finding news, getting each edition printed and then delivering the magazines. We were never late in the issues always being delivered on the first of the month. Several other magazines have been started over the years, with ours the only one to survive all of this time, watching the rest fall by the wayside. Then in late 2015 we sold the magazine on to Lou and Ged. Lou sat with me for only a short time to pick it all up and of course we were always there for her to turn to for any help. She did ask me to continue to write some of the news each month, which I still do. Lou & Ged kept the magazine the success it has always been.

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB CHICKEN RUN November 24th Once again the monthly chicken run was well supported and enjoyed by all. Wendy Sheridan won the chicken for the ladies and Steve Hindle won the men's. As Wendy was returning to England for Xmas she raffled the chicken which was won by Les Bounds. The chickens were donated by Harry and Rowena and the eggs by Joan and Chris.
CHRISTMAS LUNCH On Sunday 8th December sixty nine bowling and social members attended lunch at Portico Mar and what a lovely time was had by all. The food was delicious and the wine flowed. After lunch the Xmas draw took place, the winners of the hampers were Dave Thomas, Sheila Roberts, Lorraine Roberts the Euronics voucher was won by Lynne Armitage, Chris Harding won a bottle of Baileys and a box of chocolates. A big thank you to all who participated in the raffle and the ladies of the social committee, who as usual did a good job organising the raffle and the lunch.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE and WINTER LEAGUE Monday 9th December saw the last matches until January for the Toreadors, Matadors and Winter League. The Toreadors were away at Emerald Isle and had a very good result against the Saturns winning on four of the five rinks played, unfortunately Emerald Isle could only field five rinks. Well done to all who played. The Matadors were at home and also had a very good result against Emerald Isle Moonrakers. Winning on five rinks, well done to all who played.

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB
Wednesday 11th December was the last winter league match and we had another good result against El Cid who were fifth in the league. We won on three rinks and got the overall shots, well done everyone. After the game we enjoyed lunch at the Belfry after the results were announced the Captains of both teams wished everyone a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year. MESSAGE FROM CHRIS MERRY CLUB CAPTAIN The last couple of weeks have been very difficult for Monte Mar Bowls Club with the Captains and Vice Captains of the Matadors, Toreadors and Winter League trying to put teams together. I would like to thank all the members who stepped up to make their selves available. Especial the squads that went to La Manga, I don't think any team has gone there and come away with three winning rinks. Unfortunately we could only field five teams so had two points deducted. So once again I would like to thank all who made the effort to support the club. TURKEY RUN Instead of the monthly Chicken run as it was nearing Christmas we had a Turkey run. Most members wore something relating to Christmas instead of the usual whites. It was well attended and everyone
had a enjoyable mornings bowling played in lovely sunshine. The turkeys were won by

AESTHETIC MEDICINE The purposes of aesthetic medicine are various and affect physical improvement and personal welfare, relations with the environment, personality etc. The pillars that support our work are based in the restoration and the maintenance of body harmony, trying to achieve a synergy between inner and outer beauty, using superficial techniques or small interventions with topical or local anesthesia and always on an out patient basis.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP
W
Separation
He was halfway down the path to the front gate and the sound of the door closing behind him, was like a gunshot striking him between the shoulder blades. He paused for a moment before continuing to the gate, where he turned for a final look back. If he cared to admit it, he would remember the moist feeling round his eyes as he blinked away the slightly blurred view he had of the house. He had been with her for eighteen years and today had been the inevitable conclusion to an event that happened just a month before. It had been one of the most difficult decisions he had made, but he still believed it was the right one. Everything had been like the dream existence for the first fifteen years. They had been as close as two people could be and there were very few occasions when they had disagreed and only one or two cross words between them. They had played together, cried together gone on holiday and prayed together. They had shared a bed together but eventually the time came when they did not. They both knew it was coming to an end but neither wanted to be the one to openly admit it or state the inevitable. They would have to move apart. As in many families, money was the root of the problem. There wasn’t any. What little savings they had were gone and he had been unable to hold down any kind of job for more than a few weeks. Not his fault, it was the economy. They had moved house a few times and he had never had the chance of a decent education, so had no particular skills and the only things he could find were labouring jobs. The housing market had slumped and so the work had dried up. She could do some secretarial work but it didn’t pay enough to keep them both. The stress began to tell when she started to talk about a man she had met at work. She talked about him a lot. It was clear that he

had money but the way she talked about him gave a clear impression that she found more in him than just the thickness of his wallet. She liked him. Her voice, her face, her eagerness to go to the office, all told the story of a strong friendship. That was the beginning of the end. The relationship they had would not survive the inclusion of a close friend. It was not jealousy but the certain knowledge that nothing was going to be the same again and he would have to move out. Leave the family home. Leave her. The decision to make was how far would he have to move? If he stayed close, it would be like walking a tightrope every day. There was the possibility that, in time, he could come to accept the inevitable and perhaps even come to terms with the new situation but as it stood, he felt that possibility was a long way off. He almost stumbled on the solution during a job in an office block. The awkward display he was asked to install offered a chance to move away at short notice. The pay was good and the conditions looked OK. The quick move would avoid difficult and long winded explanations and maybe even an argument, something he desperately wanted to avoid. He told her that night when he got home. The decision had been difficult but signing the paper was easy. He was given a bus ticket and detailed instructions on where to go and what to take. He finally arrived at the door to the place he was to stay for the foreseeable future and as he pushed it open he could see the plain grey coloured walls had been freshly painted but still looked uninviting. There was a sign to ”Admin”. Taking a deep breath, he pushed on the door and saw the uniformed figure seated at the desk, look up to welcome him. He wondered if all the other new Army Recruits had felt the same emotional strain when they left their mother for the first time.

International Practicioner of Holistic Medicine, fully licensed & insured HAPPY NEW YOU! Welcome to 2020…is this the year that you have decided to become this new you that you wish for every year? Is it going to be your year? Have you said this time and time again over the years and halfway through January the strong will goes out the window? Well why not look at a different pattern to your behaviour…. after all you get results by change…not by chance! This month is dedicated to all those wanting to change their shape by reducing some weight…truth be told, most of us have hang ups with our body shapes & weight, whatever we do…but life happens and we are entitled to enjoy it! Since we were little kids, we have been hearing the brain washing going in around the typical dinner time talks…. “Eat your dinner and you will grow up big & strong” “You won’t get a sweet if you don’t finish your dinner” Or the craziest of them all… “Think about all the starving children in Africa” the most idiotic logic, that by us overeating will ever compensate a starving child. When we are born, we cry when we are hungry, we take enough milk and when we are satisfied, we can’t have another drop,
eating ONLY when we are hungry. Along the line…in steps conditioning! Nursery & School, then work - eat breakfast before we go ... have set tea & lunch breaks. Conditioning us to eat at certain times to suit the society surrounding us… not exactly what nature intended. We start overriding our natural, built in hunger signal, we start eating more than we require or when we aren’t even hungry because of the world we are conditioned in. Start tuning back into your natural hunger signal again … ask yourself … are you really hungry? Slimming Clubs thrive on repeat business, its all set off with a “goal”. Goal driven doesn’t last for most of us. You stand on the scales, focusing on the negative, you do this weekly (and in front of people), you will then focus all of your attention on food (the last thing you want to do) what you are

eating becomes the most important parts & planning of your day. You can or can’t eat this or that, depending on if it is a free food or off limits! You “lose” the weight for that goal … great right … but for how long? When your subconscious mind “loses” something it’s automatic response is to find it again … yes … you find it again and 80% of the time find a little bit more just to be on the safe side… and the yo-yo begins… repeat business for the slimming club, after all, you felt that it worked for you before… right?! What if you used the power of your own mind and got your desire? You already have the ability! Start listening out for your natural hunger signal, our bodies are equipped with signals for everything we need to fuel & protect it … signals are shown for several things like - tired, thirsty, cold, warm, hungry, the signals are all there. Reassess and readdress the natural need for food, not the indulgence. Walk into the kitchen bored? Have a glass of water and reassess that hunger.

Change your language … you DO NOT want to “lose” weight … you would simply like to reduce in size. No food is off limits (unless you have a medical condition) this will only make you think more about the limited food. Do not…I repeat DO NOT step on scales… it’s a trap. Do you know how much the body weight can fluctuate on a daily basis? Language is the key…positive language to your inner self. At meal times…put that knife and fork down between each bite and really taste each mouthful … half way through … ask yourself if you are satisfied … don’t wait until you feel bagged up … leave some on the plate…it’s okay to waste some food or simply keep it for later…if you don’t waste READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com READ THE MAGAZINE EVERY MONTH AT www.granalacantadvertiser.com

We are interested in roasting vegetables a little, but don’t worry because unlike Garlic, leek and onion do not turn bitter if they are roasted, on the contrary, they release all their aroma. While the onion is fried, we peel and chop tomatoes and peppers and add them to the pot. We also add a tad of salt, lower the heat a little (and let them poach for 8 or 10 minutes). While waiting we peel and chop the rest of vegetables. Add the broth, water, herbs and spices. Add the cauliflower, carrots, cabbage and mushrooms. Raise the heat until soup boils, cover the pot then lower the heat and let simmer for about 25-35 minutes. We can serve the soup accompanied by a boiled egg and some strips of raw or grated carrot. We can also add a little bit of fresh pepper if we like a little bit of crunch and of course crusty bread xxx

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Barranc del Cint, Alcoy
Driving Time: 1 hour Walking Time: 1+ hours Google maps directions: CV-796, 17, 03819 Alcoi
My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes.
You will see the signs and little parking place from the road.
It’s time to head out to investigate nature park Sierra Mariola. This time we start from Alcoy. But keep in mind every town in the Sierra Mariola area will certainly have routes to the mountain range. Set your Google Map to CV-796, 17, 03819 Alcoi, Alicante and you’ll find starting point of this ravine that is said to be one of the most beautiful ones in Alicante province.
54
You can hike to many directions over Sierra Mariola even from this point. We hiked along the ravine up to the mountains and

back the same way. There’s so much to choose from, but I recommend walking at least the ravine back and forth. The ravine is made of cobblestones and stairs in many places. It’s very easy to walk and you can not get lost. You can see vultures flying over your head as there’s a feeding site near by. There used to be dead cattle in the area which the vultures would then take care of. These days to leave dead animals behind is illegal, so the vultures started to disappear from the mountains. Today there is a feeding zone (which
CHECK LIST
Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

CURTAIN RODS... PRICELESS On the first day, she sadly packed her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things. On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining-room table, by candle-light; she put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of spring-water. When she'd finished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimps dipped in caviar into the hollow centre of the curtain rods. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left. On the fourth day, the husband came back with his new girlfriend, and at first all was bliss. Then, slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning, mopping, and airing-out the place. Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were brought in to set off gas canisters, during which time the two had to move out for a few days, and in the end they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked!
56
People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to work in the house. The maid quit. Finally, they couldn't take the stench any longer, and decided they had to move, but a month later - even though they'd cut their price in half - they couldn't find a buyer for such a stinky house. Finally, unable to wait any longer for a purchaser, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place. Then the ex-wife called the man and asked how things were going. He told her the saga of the rotting house. She listened politely and said that she missed her old home terribly and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for having the house. Knowing she could have no idea how bad the smell really was, he agreed on a price that was only a fifth of what the house had been worth ... but only if she would sign the papers that very day. She agreed, and within two hours his lawyers delivered the completed paperwork. A week later the man and his girlfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home ..... ... and to spite the ex-wife, they even took the the curtain rods! LOVE A HAPPY ENDING, DON'T YOU?

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Cinema and Bowling fun for Ashlee’s 10th Birthday Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 11 years now. My 10 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home.
December is always a busy time and for us it is especially important as it’s also Ashlee’s birthday. This year she decided that she wanted to go to the cinema and to play a couple of games of bowling with some friends. There are only a few Commercial Centres that have both cinemas and bowling alleys and we opted for L’Aljub in Elche. We picked up the girls around Gran Alacant and made the 25/30 minute drive. Once there we headed upstairs, went into the screen and took our seats ready to watch Frozen II. I had pre-booked the tickets online and prepared bags of popcorn, sweets and drinks at home to save queuing. Regular prices at this ABC cinema are €7.95 per adult and €6.50 for children and on Sunday Mornings they have an offer where all tickets are €4 for films that start before 16:00.
58
After enjoying the film we headed to the Ilusiona Centre, which is also upstairs and booked in for 2 games. The staff spoke a little English and we took full advantage of the option of having the barriers up, however should you have a mixed group it is possible to ask for the barriers go up and down depending on the player. Regular prices are €6 per person per game (including shoes) and on Sunday Mornings before 15:00 you can pay €6 and play 2 games per person.
Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE
The girls had a great time and were now hungry so we headed to KFC for some food. For those that haven’t been to L’Aljub, the upstairs eating area has a good mix of fast food chains and restaurants that offer a wide range of cuisine. Popular with parents of younger children is Muerde la Pasta which has a large selection of predominantly pasta and pizza dishes as well as chips, fish, meat and salads that are available in a large buffet area. You can help yourself to everything as much as you like, including drinks and the many different desserts. The other advantage of this restaurant is the soft play area that allows the kids to burn off some steam.
After a refuel, we headed back into the Ilusiona Centre and the girls excitedly ran around playing video games and took turns on the ticket winning machines. They fed their tickets into the counting machine and took their receipts to the large display of toys and sweets to decide what they could get. After a fun-filled day celebrating Ashlee turning 10, we all piled into the car and headed back to Gran Alacant.
If you want to watch the latest films in English, we thoroughly recommend the shopping centre Plaza Mar II in Alicante whose Kinepolis cinema has 16 screens and shows all the films in their original languages (with Spanish subtitles) for the first few weeks after they are released. Prices are €7.95 per adult and €6.75 for kids aged 3 to 13 and seniors aged 65 and over. If you don’t mind watching films in Spanish then the closest Cinema is the Axion in the Polamax shopping centre in Santa Pola. Regular prices are €7.50 for adults and €6.50 for kids under 14 and those over 65, they also have a special offer on Wednesdays where tickets are only €4.50. You can find Ozone bowling alleys at The Outlet Stores in Alicante, which also has a large indoor arcade area with trampolines and bumper cars and another next to the Habaneras Shopping Centre in Torrevieja, which also has a good sized arcade area. There is also a Cines IMF cinema nearby that shows some films in English and regular entrance costs €5 per person. Popular shopping centre La Zenia Boulevard is home to the Pleno Bolera Bowling Alley which has 22 lanes and a large arcade and gaming area. We hope that you all enjoyed the festive period and look forward to bringing you more fun places to visit throughout the year.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
KINGFISHER
I’ve been coming to my house in Gran Alacant for the past 12 years, usually for 3 months in Spring and 2 months in autumn. Each season has turned up its surprises; it seems that each time I visit there is at least one remarkable occurrence in the Clot, and the end of the year just past was no exception. As we are all aware, there was prodigious rainfall in our area in September, and a great deal of the water ended up in the Clot, where it has proved attractive to a wide variety of water birds. Most notable among them last autumn was the presence of several Kingfishers – a bird I have seen in the Clot on only five other occasions over the preceding 12 years. Usually, this had been a fleeting glimpse, the longest sighting had been for just two or three minutes at the main pool. Last October and November, it was almost impossible to be in certain areas of the Clot without seeing at least one of these spectacular birds – they centred on the marshy area to the south of the large civil war pillbox, and a visit to the hide overlooking the reeds usually granted several views of them. On one occasion, I had two birds sitting in the surrounding foliage, while a third bird flashed by at high speed.
80 80
As far as I’m aware, this is an unprecedented influx of Kingfisher numbers to our area, sightings in the Clot were matched by even more birds present in and around the larger El Hondo reserve near Elche. These are mostly not resident birds – Kingfishers are often short-distance migrants, coming down from the central plain s of Spain to our coastal area for the winter; others are slightly longer distance migrants, going as far south as Morocco, but there is the feeling that higher water levels locally have made our area the ideal place to stop over. So, how to see these spectacular birds? Your best bet is to visit the third hide – turn left at the side entrance to the Clot and walk for about 200 metres, you will find the hide signposted to the right. Listen out for the high-pitched single “peep” (sometimes repeated when the bird is excited!) and with luck you will get exactly the same view as of the one in my photograph, in the reeds right in front of you, or on occasion to the low trees left and right. This is a female bird, the light orange patch on the lower mandible is indicative; male birds have an all-black bill. They are likely to be here for the next couple of months, they will disperse back to their breeding grounds towards the end of March and only a few individuals will remain to breed in our area. Make your New Year’s resolution to see one of these iconic birds – you won’t be disappointed! You can see more photograph s of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL
Walking football is different to regular Association Football in many ways and is aimed at the over 50’s age group. Many clubs are now also catering for the over 60’s. It has very specific rules that outlaw all running and allows no contact between players. Over-head height restrictions and indirect free kicks ensure that the sport is played safely with full consideration to the participants’ age. As a result of these rules, games are played at a slower pace, thus reducing the threat of pain, discomfort and injury, with players briskly walking through matches. This allows people who have loved the sport all their lives to once again safely get back to playing and also introduces the sport to people who perhaps have never considered playing before. Come and see for yourself at the Jose Antonio Aleman Valero Sports Centre on Thursdays between 12:00 – 13:00. (Next to the outdoor market)
82
HEALTH BENEFITS - THE WALKING FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION Walking football offers a multitude of health benefits to older people such as reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke while improving blood pressure. Positive changes in postural balance, blood pressure and resting heart rate, lowered cholesterol, improved blood sugar levels, bone density and improving reactions, whilst slashing the odds of suffering from type 2 diabetes – all indicators of general good health. Walking football is an excellent way of staying fit and healthy. Studies have shown it can be effective in the treatment of mild to moderate hypertension and that it can produce high aerobic activity with marked improvements in fat oxidation and aerobic power. Importantly, benefits are felt whilst deriving enjoyment, which makes people far more likely to exercise than perhaps

HEALTH BENEFITS - THE WALKING FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION the perceived chore of having to just ‘exercise regularly.’ There are also many psychological and mental health advantages to playing walking football – namely high levels of personal reward and satisfaction with reduced levels of stress and exertion while playing, despite working physically hard.
Walking football also gives an often isolated section of the community the chance to become involved in something they really enjoy, make new friends, form lasting relationships with like-minded people and generally improve their social circle and overall quality of life, often making them feel less isolated and more a part of the wider community. There are also significant benefits for any older people involved in a walking football club who perhaps don’t always want to play but can engage in other aspects of the sport or club such as administrative
roles, team manager, refereeing, organising fixtures etc or sitting on a management committee of the club or even just being involved in a social capacity for the good company and friendship. All these things can help to keep older people mentally active and give their lives a very real sense of purpose and belonging, the value of which cannot be overstated. As we get older, many of us struggle with our balance, strength, stamina, weight and worst of all confidence and self-esteem levels but walking football has the potential to make a significant impact in all these areas, building body strength, improving muscles, core stability and hopefully losing some of the weight usually gained during the ageing process. As well as being able to increase fitness levels, emotional health gets a great boost too for a person involved in walking football, not least self-confidence and self-esteem.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY “We have been writing an article in GA Advertiser for 2 years now and feel we are becoming in danger of merely repeating what has been said in those previous editions. So, starting this month and in future months we intend to provide only essential information about our Society meetings, sufficient to let any golfers know the required details. Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. This is situated 14 km from GA and takes less than 15 minutes to travel there by car. The official address is A-79, Km 3, 03114, Alicante. When: the formal Society Day is Tuesday’s weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together on Friday’s weekly which has always been a Gentleman’Day. Time: on both days our agreed tee time is 8am so we require golfers to meet by the shop at the Course no later than 7.40am. Occasionally the Starter may request that we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer with us it would be best check with us beforehand. Cost: at peak times the usual price for a round playing with the Society but payable direct to the Course on the day is c.€50 to include a buggy with an additional €1.50 mandatory insurance charge. During off peak months the price is less but all costs are substantially cheaper than the “off the street” prices charged by the Course. The Society requires €5 sweep money from each golfer which is all paid out at the end of the round. Whilst the above will be the standard format henceforward we will of course use the column to advise any special circumstance that might arise at any particular time in the relevant issue of this magazine. As always new members and/or guests are welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you.
Designed by Manuel Ferri Sanchez and opened in 1993, El Plantio Golf Club has 36,000 trees and 3 lakes. Its design is varied and the greens and fairways are in excellent condition. Absence of building construction on this peaceful course. Located 2 kms from Alicante International Airport and 3 Kms from the city centre. CLINICA VETERINARIA GRAN ALACANT EXOTICS
Tel: 966 698 569 CATS MAKE FACES
Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
A recent research has proved cats actually have facial expressions, and some people know how to recognize them. These people are called “cats whisperers”. Persons like us, who have owned cats for years, already knew it: we know, not only when our cat is ill or in pain, but also when is happy, bored, amazed, or demanding attention. Normally, all those situations are associated with dogs, since they are able to make faces more easily than cats, and their facial expressions are easier to read by people: angry, ashamed, happy, bored dog face... It’s true that dogs and cats use the whole body for communicating, for example ears and tail position, etc, but this research is concentrated on facial expressions. What is new in this research is that it looks like the most common cats whisperer is a young woman who works with cats, no matter if she likes cats or not. It’s true, according to lots of researches in the past, that women are better reading facial expressions (in dogs, cats, and
86
humans) than men, but the most important thing about this, is that this ability can be learned, and this help us to understand and predict our cat’s behaviour. What they did at the previous researches was just classify cats “pain faces”, but a cat which doesn’t move can be angry or feeling pain, so being able to see the difference is quite useful for both owner and Vet. The most recent researches want to know more about cats, not only when they are ill, but also when they are happy, tired or distressed. Cats owners know very well what I’m talking about: cats have always had a “bad reputation” because most people thing they are egotistic and selfish, they are not as affectionate as dogs, they are terribly independent... Well, as Vets usually say, “a cat is not a small dog”. They are just different, but not less affectionate or loyal. The problem is probably that we haven’t been able to understand them perfectly.
