Celebrating our 16th Year

As well as January being the start of a New Year, it’s also the Anniversary of our magazine!! In January 2005 Barry and Sandra had the idea to start a local magazine and printed the first edition, which was only 4 pages long. Roll the clock forward 16 years and the Gran Alacant Advertiser has become a popular resource that residents trust to give them the latest news that affects our community as well as offers from local companies.

Barry & Sandra pictured with 1st edition We took the reins in 2015 and have continued to ensure that the Advertiser reflects all aspects of life in our amazing multi cultural neighborhood.

1st edition of GA Advertiser 2005 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone and for many life will never be the same again. Many of our local businesses have had to make hard decisions over the last few months and we want to wish everyone all the best for the coming year. We also want to say a big thank you to all of our advertisers and readers for making our community what it is.

Thank you all our advertisers & readers Lou & Ged

At the end of 2020, four electric vehicle charging stations were installed in Santa Pola. Two of them are located in the car park of the Gran Alacant Medical Centre and Library. Q: Skywalk’s locks removed Hi Lou and Ged Today I went up to the view point at the lighthouse to pay my respects to my sister as we have a lock engraved there with her name on and date of birth and the day she passed away as have many other people, however when I got there I was shocked to find that all the locks have been removed. I was suddenly heartbroken and very sad to see this not just for myself and my family but for all the other people who will go there to see their loved ones locks gone...There is no notice is there any way of finding out why they have been removed. Sandra

UPDATE: Hi Lou and Ged I have been told that they have been removed because of weight issues ... however it would have been nice for families to know this was going to happen as we have the keys and would have removed our lock.

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS A CHRISTMAS TREE STORY ... I start the month and indeed a new year with a lovely story sent to me from one of my Gran Alacant Walking football colleagues. For the last 15 years we been going on bikes up across Santa Pola & the light house. We have often commented to ourselves about a sad "Christmas tree" standing looking sad near an asphalt road to the car park. So for the last 5 yrs we have in early December decorated the tree for Christmas, we have been up there this last couple of days, I as you had expected a few stories of people seeing this tree & indeed seeing us dressing it. Today a car went past from Rio Safari Elche, they reversed back & said wonderful, a couple of years ago while we were doing

8

our adjustments, our footie mate Malcolm came past shouted at us saying what are you stealing, as you can imagine we put him right about our efforts. Again a few years ago close to school hols a bus was in car park & they all clapped us saying Muy bien. It will be dressed of course till 6th Jan, when we remove all Xmas dressings, & recycle, over the year we have put manure, grass compost, & feed with plant food so the tree gets something out of it too, sad but it brings a smile to people's faces especially this year. JULIE’S 60TH BIRTHDAY A friend of a friend sent me pictures of Julie Parker enjoying her 60th birthday here on Gran Alacant. Nice that there is always some good news amongst this covid year. See pics inside the magazine. CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to our Town Hall for the brilliant new signs as you enter Gran Alacant.

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 16TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.

The old signs put up by the previous town hall were confusing for visitors and caused so much controversy, leading to many people like myself complaining bitterly for a change of sign which we thought showed us as Santa Pola. Here are the pictures of the new sign and the old Santa Pola one. We are now, properly, Gran Alacant.

MUNICIPAL PUBLIC SERVICE Great Alacant is back with a municipal public service office. Public attention will be by appointment through the website of the electronic headquarters, from mobile, tablet or computer. Gran Alant information office has returned, appointments must be made online only. TIDY And again another thank you to the town Hall for sending out an army of people to tidy up Gran Alacant. It seems that almost every part of our urbanisation looks good.

NEW SIGN VS OLD SIGN

Now. One of the particular areas is that just Gran Alacant side of the Clot near to the Carabassi bars. Just hopefully the large piles of rubbish will soon be cleared away. Please keep it all in a monthly cleaning programme so it does not look so bad, ever again.

NATIVITY SCENE IN ALICANTE BREAKS 2 GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS The beautiful Nativity Scene that was erected in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Alicante over the festive period has broken 2 Guinness World Records for the Largest Nativity Scene. Standing at 59 feet high and covering a total area of 602 square feet, it took artist Jose Manuel Garcia 2 months to create and features Joseph, Mary and Baby Jesus. Did you go and visit this statue? If so we would love to see your pictures, please send them to us at info@granalacantadvertiser.com

CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING IN AID OF ELCHE CHILDREN’S HOME RAISED 1250€

Pam Hardy presents Bobbi Dreaver (representative from ECCH) with hand made personalised stockings so each child receives a stocking filled with treats on Christmas Day.

On 28th November the bars of Sierra Mar held a Charity Christmas Coffee morning in aid of Elche Children’s Care home. Coordinated by Pam Hardy from Zest, the event included a raffle, tombolas, a variety of hand crafted Christmas decorations and a range of other gifts to purchase. Similar to previous years, the aim was to raise enough money to sponsor each child in the home a minimum of 30€ each. Whilst this was expected to difficult to achieve during these times, the support from the local community in the build up to and on the day of the event, was extraordinary. The target was surpassed, with over 1000€ being raised. There was a real community feel to the day and a sense that the year was ending on a positive note with hope for a better 2021. Well done and thank you to all who attended or donated time, gifts and money.

NEW POLICE OFFICE IN GRAN ALACANT

A new Police Office will be opened in the first half of 2021 in Gran Alacant thanks to the efforts of the Police Department, the Santa Pola City Council and the Gran Alacant Councilor. Four prefabricated air conditioned units will be placed at the entrance to Gran Alacant between the entrance and exit lanes to the N332 and the GA Commercial Centre. There will be an open plan customer service area, two private areas, bathrooms and storage facilities. Ana Blasco, Councilor for the Police, states that together with Ă“scar Valenzuela, the Councilor for Gran Alacant, before the elections they had already planned a series of priority improvements for the neighbourhood and one of them was to provide a building in Gran Alacant so that the Police can offer the best service to residents. Ana Blasco explains that as soon as they began to govern they started to work on this plan and even with the current situation due to COVID-19, they have held an extraordinary plenary session with the Councilor for Finance to consider in their budgets the 48,000 euros that is needed to make this project happen in 2021. Their objective is to provide a more continuous service. Ă“scar Valenzuela confirmed that this is something that is extremely important to residents who have been demanding a greater Police presence in Gran Alacant for a long time. WE START A NEW YEAR IS IT TIME FOR A MEDICAL CHECKUP? The medical check-up is a medical evaluation that, through the analysis of the personal and family history, the assessment of the lifestyle and the physical examination, determines the need to make recommendations to strengthen or modify demeanors in order to maintain the state of health that the person presents. There are many silent diseases that only manifest discomfort in advanced stages, reason enough to carry out a preventive medical check-up once a year, an indication that is recommended since the age of 18. These poor health and lifestyle problems do not produce any symptoms in the early stages, so most people are asymptomatic. Who is the general check-up for? As it is a preventive behavior, it is aimed at apparently healthy people or those who have risk factors such as a family history of cardiovascular problems, cholesterol or cancer. Also for those who have lifestyles that include demeanors such as smoking, sedentary lifestyle and improper diet, since it increases the risk of suffering from diseases. What analysis do I need according to age? At 18 to 30 years General physical examination, with weight, height, basic analytics and, in both men and

14

women, blood pressure. Cholesterol in the blood at least every 4 years since the age of 18. As for sexually active people, you should also take the HIV test and update the vaccines. Emphasize good healthy lifestyle habits and tobacco cessation. In women, cytology and gynecological examination every 2 to 3 years. At 30-40 years Up to the age of 40, people go to the doctor's office when they have symptoms or health problems. However, since the age of 40, everyone is recommended to have a medical check-up every 1 or 2 years. In women of this age group, in addition to cytology to rule out cervical cancer, it is recommended to do the HPV test every 5 years, up to 65. Also, breast cancer prevention with mammograms every 2 years.

PLAZA MAYOR

From 50 It is also important to detect cardiovascular risk factors with blood pressure, weight and height measurements every two years; detection of cholesterol and blood glucose, every 2 years, and evaluation of toxic habits every two years. Determination of occult blood in feces is recommended every two years, between the ages of 50 and 70, for colon cancer detection. From 60 onwards In addition to what is recommended in the previous years, other measures are being added, such as, for example, advice on physical exercise in people over 65 at risk of falls. In addition, an electrocardiogram is recommended at this age. And it is in these years when the important field of vaccination in adults opens up, with two fundamental milestones: annual influenza vaccination and pneumococcal vaccination.

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB CAPTAIN v CHAIRMAN Saturday 21st November saw the annual Captain v Chairmans match. So many members wanted to play that some members could only play nine ends. After a great morning's bowling the Chairman's team won on three rinks losing on two. The Captain presented the Chairman with the cup followed by a presentation to

WEDNESDAY LEAGUE Due to the COVID the Wednesday winter league was cancelled, so Diane and John are running a five-week competition. All who wanted to play were randomly selected to play four of the five weeks. On the day the rinks and teams are chosen from John's hat!!! All matches are trips; the points scored are individual and are carried over the four games. The person with the most points will be the winner. Watch this space for the results next month! The tradition of the Winter League is to have a meal afterwards and Paul and his staff at the belfry have provided an excellent carvery for the bowlers every week. TURKEY CHASE

the best rinks in both teams. The Captain and Chairman expressed there thanks to everyone who played and in particular to Tanya Oliver and jack Burrell who sponsored the match, and Ted and Val Hyman who donated the prizes for the two best teams. After the presentations fifty-one members retired to the Belfry for a very good lunch and a few drinks to round off a great Club day.

whites were not required most members were in fancy dress with a Christmas theme. After a fun morning of bowling the Turkey Crowns were won by Wendy Sheridan for the ladies and Graham Smythe, after a play off against Jim Shearing for the men. Peter Steenhoven, Julia and Ian Hamilton won the eggs. As Julia and Ian with the help of their chickens donate the eggs each month, they auctioned the eggs off. Thanks to Sue and Les Bounds, Jean and Rod Chamberlain, Joan and Chris Harding who donated the Turkey Crowns. In addition to the bowling we held a table top sale, football card and sold the last of the Xmas draw numbers, all of which generate income for the Club Funds. When presenting the Turkeys to the winners the Chairman thanked the organizers of the chicken run, Joan Harding and all members who had helped her. This rounded off another great Club day. ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LUNCH On Sunday 6th December fifty eight bowling and social members attended lunch at the Portico Mar restaurant and what a wonderful time was had by all. Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and the wine flowed freely. After lunch the Annual Christmas Draw took place and the winners of the hampers were Jan Wright, Val Hyman and Gina Hindle, the Euronics Voucher and Whiskey was won by Phil Goble. Thank you to everyone who participated and a special thank you to the ladies of the social commitee for all their hard work and organizing such a wonderful day.

BOOK CLUB GRAN ALACANT Book of the month by Beth The festivities are coming to an end and with the winter months ahead, I would like to introduce you to one of my favourite Scottish authors The Lewis Trilogy by Peter May Is this month’s recommendation.

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

In the 3 books The Blackhouse, The Lewis Man and The Chess Men, Peter May has crafted a trilogy of thrilling mysteries while capturing the realities of island life. He has a wonderful way with words - describing the scenery, the islanders and drawing you into their lives. The main character in The Lewis Trilogy is Fin MacLeod who was born and lived on the island of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides until he left, as most young people do, to find a career and a life elsewhere. Fin returns to the island as a Detective from Edinburgh to investigate the brutal murder of an islander and the books follow his journey returning to Lewis and its consequencies. Peter May is a master of language and I felt a great affinity to the characters he created while still enjoying his sometimes spine-chilling mysteries.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US

WHITE STORK

Well thank goodness that’s all over! The car crash that was the year 2020 is now behind us; we can look forward with a bit of hope and pray that the Stork bringing us the new year of 2021 is going to deliver a much more acceptable package. The legend that Storks bring babies is both historical and widespread, but was brought to most people’s attention through the stories of Hans Christian Andersen, and is still popularised in modern advertising, from baby nappies to food. The Stork we have in Spain is the White Stork, which breeds in the Central and Western areas of the Iberian peninsula, flying south for the winter to central and southern Africa. So why am I telling you about a bird that has disappeared for the winter in January? There are changes afoot in both the Stork’s breeding areas and migration patterns. Until recently, your best chance of seeing one was in either the spring or autumn as they migrate through the area. However, Storks

58 58 58

are nothing if not opportunists, and an increasing number are beginning to shorten their migration routes, with northern-nesting birds stopping short of the hazardous Sahara crossing, and staying in Spain for the winter. The reintroduction of Storks in many countries, including the UK, has led to some behavioural changes. They instinctively know that they have to fly south, but when they come across a reliable food source that will last through the winter, there is little incentive to go any further. Over the past few winters, sightings of Storks in our area have been on the increase, and towards the end of 2020 there were several reports of birds being seen around the El Hondo area. There is a large landfill site to the North of the reserve which is a magnet for these birds – ironically it is human waste which is attracting them, so when these places are tidied up as they should be, Storks may find it a bit harder to find food. But not too hard – the recent improvements at both El Hondo and the Clot have led to a better environment for the Stork’s main prey species, particularly frogs and small mammals over the winter, so we can expect the White Stork to become a more common winter sight on the Costa Blanca over the next decade. My particular thanks are due to Bryan Thomas, my very good friend and top bird photographer who lives in Gran Alacant and keeps me up to date with all the local wildlife news while we are stuck in the UK – without him and a few other Costa Blanca Bird Club members, I would have missed out completely through 2020. The White Stork photo is one of his, and is reproduced here with his kind permission. You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

We then enquired about the possibility of Saturday morning sessions in Gran Alacant, but that is not possible. Neither is there availability for mid-week evening sessions. At our next monthly social get-together at
