Hello everybody!

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

Just a few words to let you know what is going to happen this month in Santa Pola and its surroundings. To start Santa Pola’s Town Hall offers its cultural programme for all tastes you can check the all programme at www.santapolaturismo.es Apart from all this, on the 16th the fishermen celebrate their main fiestas, “Our Lady of Carmen” in the evening there is a religious procession and later a display of fire works on the Levante Beach will be held. On the 9th will take place the XXII International Swimming Crossing Tabarca-Santa Pola, a real adventure for 1400 swimmers, this swimming crossing has become the most popular in Spain, there are participants from 14 countries and of course from all Spain. In the surroundings, plenty of parades of Moors and Christians, as you know it is not possible to give the exact dates but the approximate dates are as follows: Rojales, Orihuela 15th to 21st, Cox, Guardamar del Segura 20th to 25th, Albatera, Novelda 19th to 25th, Almoradi and Agost 20th to 30th. Also in Denia from 8th to 16th celebrate the peculiar fiesta of “Bous a la Mar” bulls to the sea, this fiesta is declared of international tourist interest. Furthermore if you missed the spectacular Bonfires of St John go to San Vicente del Raspeig 14th to 23rd, you can have a sample of what is like. Finally, in Torrevieja 17th to 23th the International Contest of Habaneras & Polyphony is held, if you a fond of this type music, this is your festival. The first week in August, we’ve got parade of Moors and Christians in Aspe. Enjoy yourselves! Hi everyone, I hope it’s cooled down a bit by the time you read this but the Spanish weather at AEMET are predicting a hotter summer than normal so please be careful out in the heat folks. Due to the huge demand and the requests we are getting all pictures and videos we take in “Out and About” are now available on our website for you to download for your own personal use. On another note please be careful when arriving for your holiday; don’t leave passports or cash in open view in your premises even if you just go upstairs. Make sure your door is locked even if you leave the room for one minute because that’s all it takes to ruin your holiday. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 18 and Casper on page 76

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Walkway Hello GA Advertiser Magazine I read your magazine every month I think that it´s a very good magazine. Is this something you can bring an article about in our monthly magazine?

top of GA all the way down to the beach area.

We all love the great views and rough nature here in GA. I especially like to take a walk or to take a ride on my bicycle every day in our lovely nature I am sure that this could be a scoop for our area.

Kind regards, Flemming

What I would like is this. A path from the viewpoint in upper GA all the way down to the path system and the road near the beach. Can you imagine the view the sea the nature and the sky view all the way down to the beach area? It would be absolutely fantastic!

I know we have the viewing platform at El Faro and we just got the walk way to the Paragliding spot. Very nice spots! But we don’t have a nature path from the

I don’t know if this is possible or who propose this to. Could you pass on my idea to the right people?

Town Hall Answer: Regarding to this proposal, it has been transferred to the Infrastructure Department. However, such works would be very expensive, and there are so many things in which the Town Hall must invest in Gran Alacant… Q: Toilets Hi! I really like your magazine and I read it every month. We have Holiday house in GA and were there last month (May). We like very much beautiful Carabassi beach, but it's very big problem, that there are no proper toilets. People are spending lot of time at the beach drinking and eating. Now people have to do their needs under the boards or somewhere... There are two nice beach bars, one of them has couple of portable toilets, but near the other bar there are no facilities. We saw very good space for the toilets, where are now two skids. I think other bar is taking their

rubbish to those skids as well as the people now. Beach is so nice and hope it will stay that way in the future too. More toilets will support nature-protecting plans as well as serve the people. More people I think are coming to the area all the time, so keeping the beach and water clean is very important. Toilets will upgrade otherwise very nice beach and it's profile. Hopefully Town hall sees the same. Whose responsibility is to organize more toilets to the beach and is there any possibility to have them near future? It's important to keep the beach tidy and clean in every way. Thank you for the reply. Kind regards, Satu

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: Q: Gran Alacant untidy So sad to see Gran Alacant looking so untidy. Weeds, weeds and more weeds. See picture of the long roadway opposite the church.

The front of the clot is now well overgrown, even the seating area is disappearing. Who is responsible for keeping this tidy?

Town Hall Answer: Carabassi Beach is at Elche territory, so, sadly, Santa Pola Town Hall has no authority regarding to the toilets issue. Nevertheless, your complaint has been transferred to Elche City Hall, so as they can solve this problem as soon as possible. Q: Telephone Signal Hello Ged! It has been no contact for a while, because Helge and I have not seen any progress in solving the above very serious problem. For you information we are now sending the “Denucia” from us to the Ayuntamiento. We are of course interested in your comments and will inform you ASAP we get some information. Best regards, Nils-Ove and Helge Town Hall Answer: The Infrastructure Department is working on it. They are studying the best technical option in order to achieve this goal. This is a very hot issue, so we ask for your patience.

6

Town Hall Answer: The responsible of this is the enterprise in charge of the municipal cleaning, Urbaser. For this summer, this company is going to hire more people in order to give a more accurate service.

Q: Scamming Dutchman: The Dutchman who has been scamming the old locksmith trick has, we have heard, has finally been caught. The picture of him that was circulated finally saw him chased into the clot and apprehended. Another scammer finally bites the dust. Can the Town Hall and the police verify that this guy has been caught? Town Hall Answer: After consulting to the Local Police Department, that man has been already caught, so people at Gran Alacant will be safe, regarding to this issue. Q: New pathway for paragliders: On new pathway has been made to help the paraglider at the top of Gran Alacant

to access their taking off and landing area. Can the town hall tell us if they have helped with this? Town Hall Answer: Of course we have. In fact, the Tourism Councilor has worked very hard in order to achieve the construction of this pathway, which has cost to Town Hall the amount of 60.000 â‚Ź (including the redaction of the technical project). Nowadays, we are waiting in order to end this work. ***** Number of lamp posts in Santa Pola. We mentioned in a previous edition about the 60 benches on the new social area in Santa Pola. Not only 60 benches, but all

of these lamp posts. Why, why are that many lights needed, but just think of the cost of all of the lighting? This smacks as a tremendous over kill. *****

PLAZA MAYOR EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.

THIEVES HAVE AGAIN TARGETED A SPANISH NON-PROFIT HORSE SANCTUARY, STEALING AN EXPENSIVE WATER PUMP AND TOOLS – MANY OF WHICH WERE DONATED BY KIND SUPPORTERS of our garden. You feel a bit defenceless, a bit vulnerable, the fact that people just feel like they can come in and take whatever they want,” Sue said.

The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre robberies came as cofounders Sue and Rod Weeding rescued another two ponies, bringing the number of equines in their care to 104. Sue and Rod first noticed tools disappearing in January, but were shocked when a water pump worth €700, used to pump water from flooded pastures after heavy winter rains, was stolen last month. The Weedings, who last year launched a major fundraiser to better secure their boundary after a similar spate of robberies, suspect the thieves were familiar with the rescue centre’s layout and specifically targeted the expensive pump. “They certainly knew it was there. It wasn’t in the yard, it was in a private part

20

Electrical and carpentry tools, including an angle grinder and circular saw, have also gone missing – hampering Rod’s efforts to perform critical ongoing maintenance work at the sanctuary, including building the centre’s secure new boundary wall. As work on the 218-metre boundary wall ramps up, the Weedings have called for extra donations to help complete the project and safeguard their animals. With almost €16,000 already raised, just €4000 more is needed – even small €5 donations help. Donations can be made at: easyhorsecare. net/donate/support-our-fence-fundraiser. The call came as a beautiful 22-year-old mare named Perlita, which means “little Pearl” in Spanish, was surrendered to the rescue centre on April 22 after her ageing owner became too frail to care for her. Just two weeks later, on May 5, Easy

PLAZA MAYOR Horse Care worked with Andrea’s Animal Rescue to save a 7-year-old pony stallion abandoned on a piece of wasteland without food. Named Solo, the pony’s face is injured from wearing a crude string halter. Solo was seized by Cartagena police then transported the hour north to Easy Horse Care by Andrea’s Animal Rescue – a great example of two non-profit rescue centres working together. Sue said the arrival of two more ponies have reminded the Weedings why they continue to endure obstacles such as the robberies: “It’s the love and the passion of what we’re doing that fuels us.” The Weedings will now also install CCTV cameras at their rescue centre. Sue expressed gratitude to Bill Murray and Paul Swift of Be Safe, who kindly offered to install the cameras at cost price. The

cameras will be located at strategic points to capture footage identifying thieves well before they can dismantle the cameras. Sue and Rod also hope to replace their stolen pump and tools and said any donations would be gratefully received. “Donations are very much appreciated because that allows Rod to continue our building and maintenance projects,” Sue said, adding, “It isn’t about us. It’s about all the horses, ponies and donkeys that we can save and about the changes we can make to animal welfare in Spain.” The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work, including the feeding and care of the centre’s more than 100 horses, ponies and donkeys rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment.

Make a donation or Sponsor a rescued horse Full sponsorship (€200/month) – cover the costs of everything your horse needs including feed, veterinary care, medications, vaccinations, identichipping, farrier and dentistry care.

We are looking for volunteers in our GA Shop to help on Wednesdays.

Half sponsorship (€100/month) – pitch in with others towards the cost of everything your horse needs. Hay sponsorship (€50/month) – cover the costs of hay and feed for your horse. Vet sponsorship (€20/month) – cover the costs of basic veterinary maintenance for your horse including vaccinations, medications, and farrier and dentistry care. Farrier sponsorship (€15/month) – cover the costs of general farrier maintenance for your horse. The team consisted of Jean and Rod Chamberlain and skip Bill Young. After winning all their group games they came up against another Monte Mar team in the semi-finals, Ronnie Cairns, June Young and skip Dave Melville. It was a close fought game but Jean, Rod and Bill were the winners, they then had to play one of Siesta's strongest teams in the final. La Siesta needed two to draw on the last end, they were holding two but Bill with his last wood drew the shot to win the competition. Well done to Monte Mar. SUNDAY LUNCH AT LA COVA Sunday June 11th Fifty nine bowling and social members attended a lunch at La Cova in El Campello. The lunch was booked for 2.30 but the members wanted to have a stroll along the sea front so we left Monte Mar at 12.30. The food was delicious and the drinks flowed freely. An Arab Sheik was admitted to hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery the doctors needed to store his blood type in case the need arose for a transfusion. As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally, so the call went out. Finally a Scot was located who had a similar blood type. The Scot willingly donated his blood. After the surgery the Arab sent the Scot, as appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, diamonds & US dollars. A couple of days later, once again, the Arab had to go through a corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned

the Scot who was more than happy to donate his blood again. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scot a thankyou card and a box of Quality Street chocolates. The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab did not reciprocate his kind gesture again, as he had anticipated. He phoned the Arab and asked him: "I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me another new car, more diamonds and money... but you only gave me a thank-you card & a box of Quality Street." To this the Arab replied: "Aye laddie, but I now have Scottish blood in ma veins".

Chatter Terrorism – An Attack On Democracy This was not the article, I was going to write this month, but once again, due to events back home in The UK, I have decided to dedicate my column to the lives of the 22 people, men, women and children, who lost their lives, in the Manchester suicide attack, on 22 May 2017 and the 8 who were killed, after an attack on London bridge on 3 June 2017. In this article, I want to concentrate on the Manchester attack, although all lives lost, is a travesty. In many respects, we have all become somewhat immune, to the violence we see around us. Whether on television, the news, or during our daily activity, there seems to be ferocious, aggressive and barbaric images, everywhere. As a child growing up in the 1970s, I can’t recall the same level of indiscriminate barbarity; children of a similar age now, are subject to visions, they should never be exposed too. On the night of 22 May, 21,000 people packed into the Manchester Arena to see Ariana Grande perform, in front of a crowd, that consisted mainly, of young girls and children, Ariana’s core fan base. Happy smiling faces, enjoying the music of their idol, with family and friends. As Ariana, concluded her gig and the lights came on in the foyer, people began to leave the auditorium, still on a natural high from the music, they had just heard. Suddenly, without warning, a 22 year old Muslim man, Salman Ramadan Abedi, blew himself up in front of hundreds of people leaving the Manchester Arena. When I awoke on Tuesday morning and switched on the television, I sat in horror at what I was witnessing. The death of 19 people and 59 others, taken to hospitals, in and around Manchester. A home grown

38

terrorist, the son of Libyan refugees, who escaped to Britain, under the Gaddafi regime. Britain gave this family asylum, opened its doors to them and many others in their unfortunate position; we had invited a killer into our midst and we never knew it! I know Manchester well, having lived there for a number of years. In 1996, myself and my partner were there, when an IRA bomb exploded in the city centre. We were only there for a few days, but the spirit of Manchester shone through. Mancunians rallied together this time also, stood firm, helped one another, offered free rooms, to those stranded after the bombing and Manchester’s taxi drivers, came out in force, driving the victims home, free of charge. Britain’s third largest city, showed its greatness, through love and compassion, unlike Salman, who looked into the eyes of children and indiscriminately blew them up; a contrast that is stark; In times of adversity humanity comes to the fore, while all around, mayhem and murder ensue! The death toll rose to 22; there will be intense soul searching, as all of us look for answers, as to why this happened. I believe the dangers were always there, we have just refused to acknowledge them, for fear of being labelled racist or discriminatory. My generation and older are well aware of the dangers of terrorism. We grew up at a time of IRA bombings. When I was young, you couldn’t open a newspaper, without reading about another murder, at the hands of one extreme Irish group or another; although the brutality we witness today, is on an altogether, different scale. As the threat from Northern Ireland abated, we became less vigilant and less aware of the risks of terrorism. Now is the time, we need to relearn the lessons of the past and overcome the destructive nature of terrorism. Peoples views about what happened in Manchester, are blunt and to the point.

This is a subject, no one has avoided talking about, some more intonated than others. As Britain begins to pick up the pieces of the Manchester and London attacks, trying to find solutions to the problems, of home grown terrorism, the Expats who live in Gran Alacant are clear, about what they believe is responsible and I just happen to agree with them. As a Nation, Britain has been ready to offer asylum to people who genuinely need it. I am well aware that there are those that deserve our help and generosity, but I am also mindful, that there are others who seek to obtain asylum, for dubious or false reasons. The World is dealing with terrorist organisations, that have no regard for life and would stop at nothing to destroy us. The UK has to check, recheck and vet potential asylum seekers, granting asylum, only when they can confirm their identities. Stronger scrutinizing will at least begin, to tackle the problems of extremism. Salman was radicalised whilst living in the UK; last month I touched on the subject of Islam and home grown terrorism, so don’t want to dwell too much on this topic. I do however want to stress once again, the importance of the Muslim community, working together, to flush out radicals. They have a duty and responsibility to reeducate the youngest and most vulnerable members of their groups, steering them away from radicalisation, towards a path of peaceful integration. Murder is not a solution. Northern Ireland enjoys a peaceful coexistence with Britain, because of dialogue, allowing all groups to play their part in the political process. After the terrorist attack in Manchester, campaigning in the General Election was suspended, briefly; politicking seen as inappropriate, while people lie in hospital. Soldiers were deployed to key strategic

areas, open to terrorist attack, as the threat level in the UK rose from severe to critical; It seemed an attack was inevitable. notwithstanding all of this, the UK election took place on 8 June; Mrs May and the Conservative Party, lost their Paliamentary majority, forming an alliance with the Democratic Unionist Party, in a nail biting General Election. The political process was interrupted, as all sides of the political argument showed their respect for the dead and injured, but it did continue, in the wake of this dreadful atrocity. Mrs May will now have to deal with the scourge of terrorism and Brexit, in a weaker position. Despite what has happened, I am firmly of the view, that Britain should not close the drawbridge, stop immigration completely and look inwards. Isolationism never works; we have a duty to fight for those who need our assistance, whilst remaining firm against terrorists. Only her election failure will hinder that task! So it’s been a difficult month back home in the UK, as Britain struggles to get back to normal after a terrible terrorist attack. The Prime minister, Theresa May now has to tackle some of the issues, that have turned radicalised young men and women, into suicide bombers; difficult with no majority in Parliament. People are not born to kill; other more sinister individuals, indoctrinate potential victims into their web of lies and misinformation. These are the so called jihadists, who are interpreting the Quran, for their own destructive ends; embracing the unprotected, teaching the unguarded and using the vulnerable, to further their own agenda. It is up to our new Government, to stop this growing problem; only firm action will work. The time for teetering on the periphery is over; I wish Mrs May lots of luck, as she navigates her way through shared Government at this difficult time, as I’m sure we all do!

The Lighthouse To Santa Pola Walk Thank you Dorothy for sending us this delightful walk on a fine day! Walking shoes/trainers should be worn as some parts are stony! It takes an hour to get to Santa Pola, from where you have several options… From Brisas Del Faro, turn left and head for the lighthouse and the 4km straight, tarred road that connects the lighthouse to the N332 main road to Santa Pola. From the lighthouse, walk down the road and take the 1st track on the left, signposted Bunker 1 (see photo). This will lead you to the remains of a Spanish Civil War bunker which is worth a look. Then veer right and follow the path. Otherwise you can take the 2nd track on the left down from the lighthouse. Initially you are enclosed by pine trees but they will disappear as, dotted at regular intervals, are the aromatic eucalyptus trees planted by long gone farmers! The openness and the silence is worth the walk so far but soon, the view opens out as the town of Santa Pola presents itself. Ahead, the Torre D’Escaletes/ Torre Del Pep awaits and as you descend towards it, take in the view that encompasses the coastline beginning with the island of Tarbaca on your left. From the tower, make your way down the flights of steps to the road. Turn right, walk along a short distance and you will see steps to take you down on to the next road. Torre Del Pep! On turning right again and walking along, you will see two bus stops – cross the road to catch the bus to the town centre. (It follows a one-way route as you will see on the poster.) NOTE - If you’d rather avoid taking the steps down then there is an alternate route. From the tower, follow the road to the right which will lead you to walk down the tarred road and round to where you can catch the bus. (It’s over an hour’s walk to the town centre. You can, of course, walk back to GA.) Catching The Bus To The Town Centre. Again, you have options: • Ask for a ticket to the bus station (estacion) where you can catch another bus back to Gran Alacant. • Ask for a ticket to the castle (castello) where you can enjoy a drink and snack at a café on the plaza before exploring the area and then making you way along the street to the bus station. • Ask for a ticket to the port (puerto) which is the stop after the castle. From there, you

HOW SMARTPHONES AFFECT PEOPLE’S LIVES THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE RISE OF FLIP PHONES

We live in a world where people have more access to the latest smartphones than a decent toilet. From poverty-stricken nations to advanced regions like North America and Europe, smartphones prevail everywhere. Smartphone technology continues to be a topic of fascination since its birth, which dates back to 1999 when it was still very rare and uncommon. In today’s date, with an estimation of more than 6.1 billion smart phone users by 2020 and over 4 million apps to choose from, it will not be wrong to say that smartphones OWN the human civilization, to the point where you are probably reading this article via your smartphone. This piece of news is certainly great for tech giants like Apple, Samsung, HTC, Google apps/play store, and many others smartphone manufactures and app developers, as it brings them more money. However, is this good news for the human race, where people OVERUSE the gadget? Is it good for YOU, your family and life as a whole? THINK! That said here is a list of 4 bizarre factors

52

to convince you how smart phones affect people’s lives — the good, the bad and the rise of flip phones. You Are Not Living In The Moment Have you attended a dinner date lately? Must have been amazing, right? Oh no, it’s not the food, but about the pictures that you clicked (around 10 times) for a perfect snap to be uploaded on Instagram or Facebook! If that’s the case, you are definitely overusing your smartphone and not living in the moment – you are living life through the lenses of your phone and are more interested in recording the moment instead of living it. Having a good camera makes it difficult to resist taking pictures, but living a life from behind the camera, with your fingers glued to the screen is no way to live. Declining Social Interactions It is true, that smartphones increases connectivity, and makes long distance relationships feel closer. However, an overuse of smartphones can also leave you disconnected from the world around you in many ways. It is not a rare sight to see a bunch of people at the coffee shop, with faces

buried down in their phones. It’s not that these people have nothing to talk about, but, in awkward silences people prefer to use their phone rather than trying to make polite conversation. In a study conducted on young adults aged 18 to 29, more than 40% reported the feeling of being ignored and awkward. In addition to this, it has been reported that 25% of married couples feel distracted, annoyed, and less connected with their spouse due to constant smartphone usage. Your Health Is At Stake An overuse of your gadget can have major impacts on your health. Your vision, in particular, is at a higher risk of damage. The strong rays coming out of the smartphone directly meet your eyes. According to research by the American Macular Degeneration foundation, it is found that retinal damage by the smartphone light can lead to the loss of central vision. Stressed, Always! Having a smartphone makes you easily accessible, which is a great thing, but not when you are off from work. The fact that you are always connected with your work makes you tired, physically and mentally. No matter where you travel, what time zone you are in, your work always follows you in the face of your smartphone. In an interview conducted by BBC, Dr. Alsadir Emslie reportedly stated that almost 400,000 people in the UK alone reported being stressed and ill due to work. Rise Of A Changing Culture: Distraction And Disconnection The culture of smartphones is seen as building connectivity and increasing access to make our lives easier. But in recent years, the culture has changed, especially in the young adults who overuse the gadget. More than 80% of adults use smartphones. The popularity of smartphones has created a cultural dependency on a piece of technology and led to changes in the behavior pattern of individuals, such as a major decrease in concentration levels and a visible disconnection from loved ones.

An article published by the Telegraph covered a study on the topic. It asked students to go without a cell phone for 24 hours and check their behavior and feelings. As a result, it was reported that around 50% failed to even stay without a smart phone for 24 hours, while the remaining faced feelings of anxiety and depression. Break The Smart Phone Addiction The Flip Phones Are Making A Comeback! So, should you dump your smartphone for the older world’s flip phones? Well, you may be surprised to know, but that’s what’s been happening since the past few years. From great preachers and business tycoons such as Warren Buffet, Andrew Luck, and Anna Wintour, to cool celebrities like the singing sensation Rihanna and famous Hollywood actress, Scarlett Johansson — all prefer (and have been flaunting) a flip phone. Yes, you got it right — flip phones are slowly and gradually making a comeback. Unlike a smartphone, a flip phone does not have fancy apps to keep you occupied. It is useful to make or receive calls and messages, and may be set an alarm, but that’s it. And that’s all you really need! Besides drawing a fine line between work and personal life, a flip flop gives you the power and freedom over yourself. It is a bold, comparatively cheaper, yet luxurious piece of technology to flaunt and prove that you are still the boss. By now you are well aware of the serious message this article contains. The aim is certainly not to criticize technology or act like the luddites. Smartphones do make life more convenient and easy, but they are engaging to the point of being addictive, and that’s bad. With a flip phone, you are down to the very basics again. Switching to a flip phone may seem like a downgrade, but this downgrade will help you upgrade your life.

GASP Theatre Group

The Gran Alacant Santa Pola Theatre Group (GASP) was founded in 2009 after an advert was placed in the GA Advertiser for people who would like to do some amateur dramatics. Unfortunately, although the inaugural meeting was well attended, the actual numbers who turned up for the first rehearsals fell off quickly. We began to rehearse "Habeas Corpus", but after a few months the two founders of the group decided to return to the UK and we were left without a director. Undaunted we put "Habeas Corpus" into cold storage and began rehearsals for a sketch show "An Evening With Gasp", which we presented on 12th and 13th June 2010. We then revived "Habeas Corpus" which we presented in the Teatro Municipal in Santa Pola on 23rd and 24th October the same year. As we had registered as a charity, with donations going to the Cruz Roja in Santa Pola, we were able to use the municipal theatre free of charge.Over the years we have made a number of donations to the Cruz Roja, in the region of â‚Ź2000+.Our first donations were also to the local school, a children's library project in Santa Pola and we also made a donation to the Lorca Eathquake appeal.

Is it time for the "last Gasp" ? Since 2010 we have presented a number of plays, our latest being “Just the Ticket” in May of this year. We have also presented a number of programmes of short one-act plays, and evenings of comedy. We presented an evening of short sketches to the Interclub at the Rincon restaurant in Gran Alacant. Unfortunately, we are now down to a very small group. Only 9 people, which makes casting very difficult. We are also no longer the “spring chickens” we were when we first started. With the exception of Esther and Lucia - our two Spanish ladies, we are all getting on a bit - to put it mildly, and finding it becoming difficult to remember lines and stage directions as well as we used to. A further problem is that we are getting very small audiences. For "Just the Ticket" we had only 13 in the audience on the first night, and 40 on the second. A lot of hard work and effort goes into each production and it is so disappointing to be playing to such small numbers. We will be holding our AGM on 21st June, and we will have to give some serious thought as to whether it is worth continuing, or whether it is time for the "last Gasp".

LATEST TRENDS IN KITCHEN DESIGN

Milan - the city of fashion and newest trends was recently the scene of one of the most important events in the furniture and interior design sector. The best firms specializing in design deployed their potential with several proposals that will mark the future of the furniture and kitchen design sector in three essential points.

WHAT ARE THE THREE ESSENTIAL POINTS? 1. A NEW CONCEPT OF USE OF THE KITCHEN: As a central space, for the enjoyment of different experiences, with new equipment, ergonomics and integration in the rest of the home. 2. SUSTAINABILITY: Natural materials such as stone, metal and recycled materials are the main protagonists of future kitchens, as well as small spaces for mini-gardens in which to grow your own harvest. 3. MORE DESIGN, MORE TECHNOLOGY: New forms, volume play, study of lighting to create different sensations depending on the occasion, do not forget that the kitchen is about more living, more being, more enjoying ... Providing comfort with ultra quiet appliances, extractors that purify the air, materials which are easy to clean ... and the magic word is ergonomics!

WHAT DOES ECO-DESIGN REFER TO? In this kitchen we use recyclable materials, production processes less aggressive with the environment, minimizing energy and water consumption by reducing chemicals, emissions, gases and waste. We also use an organic coating (PET) one of the best options available in the market for the design of the doors. It allows recycling once it has finished its life cycle. If you dream of that perfect kitchen for your home, do not hesitate to ask for our advice. In E-Studio

Kitchen and Interior we are going to make it very easy because we know that the best thing about having a dream is to fulfil it!

WOMEN AND SPORT Hi, how are you? As promised, this month we are going to look at the topic of women and sport. As most of us already know, regular exercise combined with good eating habits improve women's health and helps to prevent many illnesses. This of course applies to everyone, men and women, but in this article we're specifically looking at women especially because with the hormonal changes that they experience over time they need a different type of attention. Statistics estimate that 80 percent of women over forty spend the majority of their day sat down yet, as already mentioned, physical activity can help prevent cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and strokes which are the third leading cause of death in women worldwide. The combination of a regular physical activity with a healthy diet is an effective way of preventing and controlling these problems and others such as obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis or arthritis as well as helping during the menopause. It applies during pregnancy too when keeping up physical activity will improve flexibility and the physical strength needed. Activities such as walking, dancing, swimming, running (in some cases) are essential to minimise loss of bone mass and improve muscular strength and balance thus reducing the risk of falls and fractures. But physical activity isn't just good for us on a physical level... it can improve women's quality of life on a physiological and spiritual level too by reducing stress, anxiety, depression and loneliness. This is particularly important as women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression. Physical

72

activity develops self esteem and confidence and improves physiological well being and social connections. At this time of year and particularly in this area it's sometimes difficult to think about exercise. It's hot!! But what is important with exercise is consistency- don't look for excuses. Whether it's hot, cold, rainy, windy, look for a way around it. Plan to exercise

for example for a minimum of 4 days a week but arrange to go out early or late to avoid the heat. We are so lucky here to have the beach and the countryside on our doorstep where we can go for long walks, run, jog, cycle as well as centres that offer all types of other activities. I want to encourage you to look after yourselves and be happy. It's only the first day that's difficult with exercise, after that you'll love it! See you next month! Any suggestions for future articles that you'd like to see, just let me know. Many thanks. Gabriela Auzoberia Calvo Personal Trainer Director of Pilates Gran Alacant

COCO FILMED IN AND AROUND GRAN ALACANT, BY RESIDENT DIRECTOR AND CAST ....

I

n November 2015, local man, Neil Boultby (38) began filming ‘COCO’ a horror movie, he had written. Neil has a passion for writing as well as horror films, having studied film and drama in the past. Neil, who also plays Richard in the film, was able to gather together friends, to act in his production; many of them treading the boards, for the first time; shooting at locations in and around Gran Alacant. By the end of 2016, filming finished, concluding Neil’s first movie and he began the long task of editing ‘COCO.’ The music for the film was written by Steve Riven; piano teacher and talented musician, who has also appeared on the BBC; it is filmed in both Spanish and English; concentrating mainly on actions and visual imagery, to gets its message across. Neil would like to thank those who took part in ‘COCO’ for all their hard work and dedication, hoping to enlist their talents, in future up coming films; equally Tutti’s Restaurant and Ohana Gastro Bar, for the use of their facilities; making this movie possible.

COCO (2016) run time 99 minutes; NB Productions.

‘COCO’ is a psychological drama; a horror film encompassing elements, of the ‘Slasher’ movies. of the past. In this movie, supernatural terror meets real world horror. Neil invites you to participate in a film, the background of which, lies in the popular 17th century myth ‘The Bogeyman’ or in Spanish ‘El Coco.’ In folklore, El Coco, punishes naughty children who stay up past their bedtime.

74

Neil wanted this movie to be a light horror, not to be taken too seriously; leaving intimation behind; a message that will resonate profoundly, remaining with all those that watch it, long after the event. A movie that produces memories, also produces success, important for any screenwriter.

Phoebe (Natalia Kaverznikova) is a young girl, who accidentally awakens, a long since forgotten horror; a difficult part of her childhood; while coming to terms with her traumatic past. Unable to live a happy, normal life, Phoebe

starts to feel a dark presence is with her, at all times; affecting both her and those around her, at home and at work; everyday, unabated. Witnessing her slow deterioration, Phoebe knows, she will eventually have to confront her demons; all the while, those around her believe she is losing her mind. The action in the movie burns steadily and deliberately; tension and mystery building along the way, throughout the film. Long takes are often used by Neil, to instil a sense of alarm, perplexing the viewer, offering time for thought and contemplation. The successful use of mirrors and anomalous camera angles, creates the feeling, Phoebe is

being watched; coupled with extreme close ups, the viewer can feel anxious and uneasy at times, successfully involving all those who watch ‘COCO!’ At the end of May 2017, Neil organised an online event, allowing others who wanted, to watch ‘COCO,’ the option of doing so, online for free, for one night only. The performance was a resounding success, with a fantastic response from all those who took part; predominantly aimed at the instagram, horror and business community!

Currently, Neil is in the process of sending off copies of his film, to film festivals, hoping to reach a wider audience; getting ‘COCO’ the attention and exposure it deserves. I know you will agree with me, when we wish Neil, NB Productions and all those who took part in the making of this film, lots of luck and good wishes for the future, in all their endeavours. ‘

Containing many beautiful shots of the local area, in Santa Pola and Alicante, pivotable to the movie itself and will be of great interest to those of us who live in Gran Alacant and the wider area. The community in which we all live and play a part is important, both to me and all of us. A man was riding on a full bus minding his own business when the gorgeous woman next to him started to breast-feed her baby. The baby wouldn't take it so she said, "Come on sweetie, eat it all up or I'll have to give it to this nice man next to us." Five minutes later the baby was still not feeding, so she said, "Come on, honey. Take it or I'll give it to this nice man here." A few minutes later the anxious man blurted out, "Come on kid. Make up your mind! I was supposed to get off four stops ago!"

A doctor that had been seeing an 80-year-old woman for most of her life finally retired. At her next check up, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all the medicines that had been prescribed for her. As the doctor was looking through these his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills. "Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?" "Yes, they help me sleep at night." "Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely nothing in these that could possibly help you sleep!" She reached out and patted the young doctor's knee and said, "Yes, dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16-year-old Granddaughter drinks. And believe me it definitely helps me sleep at night." You gotta love Grandmas!

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Tabarca Hi , my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 9 years now. My 7 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we want to tell you about our first ever trip to the Island of Tabarca or Nueva Tabarca as it is officially known. Measuring 1.800m long by 300m wide, Tabarca has been on our “places to visit” list for many years and in June we finally decided to cross it off. In 1760 King Carlos III of Spain ordered that Tabarca be fortified and a town built to protect the inhabitants from the Berber Pirates. These days the population is around 50, making it the smallest permanently inhabited Island in Spain. The fortification has been officially declared as a Historical and Artistic Site and Asset of Cultural Interest and although it is a traditional fishing island, the most important source of income is from tourism. In 1986 the waters around Tabarca were the first in Spain to be declared a Marine Reserve due to the excellent quality and biodiversity of their flora and fauna. Not really knowing what to expect, we got ready for a day at the beach and caught a catamaran from Santa Pola. You can also get there by water taxi which is quicker and cheaper but we wanted to see

the fish from the glass viewing windows in the bottom of the boat. (Boats also run from Alicante, Torrevieja and Benidorm). After boarding and filled with excitement we saw lots of fishing boats and the breakwater

lighthouse as we departed Santa Pola harbour. It was really amazing to see Santa Pola and the coast in both directions from the sea during our 25 minute crossing and as we got closer to the Island, we admired the large shoals of fish through the viewing windows. Stepping onto the island, we first wanted to explore the various buildings and lighthouse that we had seen en route. The landscape was beautiful and peaceful, however, wearing flip flops wasn’t the best idea as the pathways were a little rough and our feet were beginning to suffer, so we took a few pictures and walked back towards the town, past the museum, which was unfortunately closed, and grabbed a refreshing slush. Crossing through an archway in the fortification to the town itself, we discovered lots of little shops, a large square with some restaurants and a park. Some of the quaint houses we passed were available for rent,

and we even found a couple of hotels. From the other end of the town, it was a novelty to see a distant Santa Pola through the other arched entrance. We walked back and headed to one of the numerous restaurants near the harbour and beach, which serve traditional food and the local dish “caldero” which is a fish stew.

Once full, the beach was calling and Ashlee and Miriam didn’t waste any time running into the sea. There were lots and lots of fish around us and these as well as the reef and shipwrecks, can be viewed on organised snorkelling/diving trips. Enjoying an ice cream, we walked back to the harbour and boarded our return catamaran to Santa Pola. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and will be going back again but this time with some comfy shoes/trainers as well as flip flops!!! So, don’t keep saying “I’ve always wanted to go but still haven’t”, take a trip and explore this beautiful little island for yourselves, you won’t regret it. Join us next month for some more fun “Out and About”. Bye for now , Star and Ashlee x

SUMMER RECIPES FOR THAT SUMMER GLOW Summer has made a sudden appearance which hopefully means longer, warmer and lazier days (I know the latter is wishful thinking for some of us) ideally spent either at the beach or poolside soaking up the beautiful sunshine and of course dining alfresco with a well earned cocktail or beer in hand. The warmer weather for a lot of us means we often overdo it in consuming high calorie processed foods and beverages like ice creams, fizzy drinks, alcohol, barbecued burgers and sausages but with the fresh summer season fruits, veggies and herbs available in abundance at the local market what excuse do we have? It’s the perfect opportunity to flood are bodies with healthy delicious meals. Eating healthy doesn’t have to be time consuming or complicated so here are a few recipes that are quick and simple that won’t have you spending hours stuck in the kitchen. Summer chickpea salad • 1 jar of washed and drained chickpeas • 2 stalks of chopped celery • ½ cup of diced cucumber • Handful of chopped cherry tomatoes • 1 cup of fresh sweet corn • 1 large chopped avocado • 2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice • 1 tbsp of olive oil • Handful of chopped fresh coriander • Pinch of salt and pepper Place all the ingredients into a big salad bowl and mix together, best served chilled with a side of quinoa or brown rice and an extra squeeze of lemon. Cucumber, avocado and basil gazpacho (refreshing chilled soup) • • • • • • • •

1 large ripe avocado 1 cup of fresh basil Juice of 1 lime 2 cups of water 2 cloves of garlic 3 green onions 1 cucumber (skin on, seeds removed) 1/3 cup of olive oil

Herb oil Blend oil with roughly ¼ of the fresh basil and set aside allowing the flavours to blend. In a blender combine remaining ingredients and blend until smooth, chill in the fridge

ideally for a few hours, served in a cold bowl and garnish with a drizzle of the herb oil and serve with whole grain crusty bread. Classic hummus • • • • • •

1 jar of washed and drained chickpeas 1 clove of fresh garlic minced 2 tbsp of fresh lemon juice 1 tbsp of olive oil ¼ cup of water Pinch of salt and pepper

Add all the ingredients and blend until a smooth consistency adding more water if needed, best served chilled with a mixture of cut up veggies like celery red and yellow bell peppers, carrots and cucumber or mixed seed crackers. Jazz your classic hummus recipe up with either blended roasted red peppers, fresh basil and lemon or fresh coriander and lime. Creamy blueberry coconut popsicles • • • •

1 cup of fresh or frozen blueberries 1 can of coconut milk 2 tbsp of maple syrup 1 tbsp of vanilla extract

Blend the coconut milk, maple syrup and vanilla extract in a blender and then add the blueberries and pulse until they are “smashed” pour the mixture into the Popsicle moulds and freeze over night. Simple health hacks Eating fruit for breakfast or on an empty stomach provides the maximum benefits, allowing the body to properly digest and absorb the nutrients in the fruit more effectively. Filling up on colourful vegetables, whole grains, beans, pulses and healthy fats like avocados and nuts will provide the body with all the essential nutrients and keep you feeling full and satisfied. Adding different fresh herbs to meals not only tastes amazing but they are incredibly beneficial boasting nutritional content.

Have a healthy happy summer and bon appetite!

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

VACCINES ARE NECESSARY When we started working 20 years ago, hunters usually refused rabies injection because they thought it annulled their dog’s sense of smell. It was a relatively common opinion, but it was completely false.

Spain has been an officially recognized free of rabies country for nearly 60 years thanks to vaccination. Vaccines do work. Unfortunately there are people that still believe vaccines are a “swindle” supported by labs, doctors and Vets, just for making money. At least in case of Vets, we can assure this is not true, since, for example, the average cost of treating a puppy against parvovirus (with no guarantee of survival!) is about 10 times more expensive than parvo vaccine. TREATING IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN PREVENTING. ALWAYS!!! So, what about the side effects of vaccines? Of course, they exist. One of the most common ones is the appearing of a lump at the inoculation point, which normally disappears by itself in a few days. The number of serious adverse reactions is minimum, practically insignificant.

114

The most important requirement for having a successful inoculation is the animal must be healthy and free of parasites. For this reason it’s very important to explore the animal (which includes auscultation, temperature, lymph glands check, etc), previous to the inoculation. And this exploration must be performed by a Vet. Nobody else can do it. Of course, in some cases exploration is not possible because the animal doesn’t cooperate. What happens with those vaccines that are supposed to have been injected by a “breeder”? You can see them at the puppy’s vaccination book but no Vet signed and stamped them. What Vets normally do is ignore them, because you can never be sure if they are real or not (officially speaking, they don’t exist, and, besides, they are illegal). Let’s suppose they are not real: in this case, the puppy is totally vulnerable if the Vet doesn’t inject it. In the opposite case, if the vaccines have been injected, some extra injections provided by the Vet won’t harm the puppy, but will reinforce its immunity. So, as everyone can see, the logical conclusion if we see a puppy whose vaccines have been “done by a breeder”, is to ignore them and start from zero the vaccination plan. Vets are obliged by EU regulations to identify ourselves in every vaccine we inject with our name and Vet College member number, and, in case of rabies injection, our address and phone number, in case there is any problem at the border when travelling abroad with the pet. Please, have your pet’s vaccination book or Passport checked just to make sure its vaccinations are updated and correctly signed.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

LADDER SNAKE

Oh No! I can hear the howls of anguish and fear already. “If he's about to tell us there are snakes in the Clot, then I'm not going in there, ever!” This is a perfectly understandable reaction. About a third of adult humans are frightened of snakes (ophidiophobia, if you want to know the technical term for it), making this the most common reported phobia. Scientists suggest that mammals may have an innate reaction to snakes, which is vital for their survival as it allows such dangerous threats to be identified immediately. My pictures show a common snake of our region, a Ladder Snake, and it was one of the largest I have ever encountered at just short of two metres long. It was on the path leading to the main pool hide in the Clot last month, and seemed disinclined to do what most snakes do when a human approaches it, which is to slither off into the undergrowth at high speed. If you've been in the Clot during warmer weather, chances are you probably haven't seen one, but I'll bet you quite a large sum that a snake has seen YOU! So, how quickly are you going to die when it bites you? The answer is – No, you're not going to die, and if you get bitten by a Ladder Snake it might hurt but it's

118 118

not venomous and almost certainly your own silly fault; the only way one of these will bite you is if you interfere with it. It is not a poisonous snake, and it does a considerable amount of good keeping unwelcome creatures such as rats in check. Why is it called a Ladder Snake? There's nothing ladder-like about the one in my photos but if you see a juvenile, it clearly shows a ladder pattern along its back which gradually transforms into the two body-length dark stripes which you can see in the picture. It preys on small animals such as mice and rats, but will also take birds, particularly from nests at this time of the year – it is an accomplished treeclimber. In the Clot, it will also take lizards and amphibians, and if you've been there recently you'll know there are plenty of frogs to be had, you just can't miss all that croaking! So, if you see one, keep a respectful distance, don't try to pick it up, and above all leave it in peace. If you do that, you are helping to maintain nature's balance, where everything has an important role to fill.. You can see more of the birds and other animals in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
