JULY 2022 ISSUE 210
Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com Q: Rastro Market Hi Lou & Ged At your next meeting with the local Councillor, can you ask when they plan to restart the Rastro market in Gran Alacant? It surprises me that it has not restarted as the normal market has. Many thanks, Gary Oscar’s Valenzuela’s Reply: The Rastro market is important to us, however the rules have changed and now all activities require to go through tender process. I am happy to confirm that the new contract for this is now in progress. The market should resume its activities soon. Q: Environment & Recycling Dear Lou & Ged We were in GA recently and, as always, we picked up your excellent magazine. Thank you for producing it month in and month out. I was interested to read about the GALS beach clean-up. Carabassi has a fantastic beach and we are very fortunate to have it on our doorstep, but it does have a lot of rubbish despite the regular tractor clean ups - so well done GALS! I was wondering if the GALS or anyone else has developed the same addiction as I have when on the beach, that of nurdle hunting? Nurdles are small plastic pellets that are the raw material used in factories to make plastic products. They are typically about 5mm in size and being so small, they inevitably fall off lorries and container ships whilst being transported around the world. They then end up in our seas or rivers via drains from roads, and are washed up on our beaches where like other small pieces of plastic are a danger to wildlife. This is a worldwide problem and Carabassi and other nearby beaches are no exception. They have quite literally millions of these pellets littering them, mostly near the back
of the beaches, as opposed to in, the UK and other places where they are more often found on the tide line at the water's edge. I have attached a picture of a few that I collected from a local beach. Interestingly I have recently discovered there is a group in Spain called Good Karma Project that collects these nurdles through beach cleans - the website is in both Spanish and English. I don't think there is currently a group on our part of the Costa Blanca, but maybe someone who lives on GA or nearby would like to start one? Secondly, we are always very careful to separate recyclables from our general rubbish whilst we holiday in GA, but I am aware that other holidaymakers and probably some residents too, simply cannot be bothered and therefore may need a little encouragement to do their bit. I was wondering if you or your readers know what happens to all our general waste that goes into the grey bins? Is there a landfill site somewhere, if so where, or does it go to an incinerator? If it's incineration, does it produce renewable energy like our local one does here in Plymouth - actually they don't like to call it an incinerator - it's an Energy from Waste (EfW) plant, which is great, but obviously not as good as it would be if we created less waste, or even recycled more effectively. Finally, do any of your readers know of anywhere that we can get refills such as we can in the UK? I mean somewhere where we can take our empties eg shampoo bottles, washing up liquid and get them refilled to avoid throwing away (after all there is no place called AWAY!) In the UK, we are now also seeing stores
where you can buy anything from spices to rice, pasta and flour loose in your own containers. Is there something similar in Spain? Thanks, Nicky GA Advertiser Reply: Hi Nicky, thank you very much for your interesting thoughts. We hope your email inspires someone to start a nurdles collecting group. We are not aware of any shops that offer refills in this area but perhaps our readers will share their experiences with us. In regards to general waste that goes to grey bins, we have asked the question and the councillor confirmed the content of grey bins is being recycled. Q: Maintenance Dear Lou & Ged, In the June edition I saw photos of neglect in Gran Alacant. A few months ago I sent some photos to the local Council, but they did not even have the courtesy to answer.
this and act accordingly. Best regards Nancy GA Advertiser Reply: At our last meeting with the councillor he explained to us that the cleaners/gardeners are currently working more hours than they should according to the current contract which is very old and based on a lot less population. As we mentioned in our previous issues since the last cleaning/gardening contract was made the population of GA doubled and so the cleaning/gardening services are not sufficient anymore to reflect this. Councillor Oscar Valenzuela confirmed that new contract has now been finished and approved and is currently out for tender process but they need more time. Council is working hard to improve the cleanliness of GA. Q: Cockroaches Hi Lou & Ged Do you remember last year we had the problem with the pest control guys spraying down the drains on the road and the cockroaches getting out, well it’s happened again this morning. It was only by chance I saw a man and a woman stood at the drain outside our house with the spray gun. I saw them put tape over the hole they spray down and as they were walking away the army of cockroaches started to run out. My husband Darren shouted over to them and they came back. They started spraying the drain but the cockroaches just kept coming, and they were stamping on them everywhere, it was horrible. I’ve attached some photo’s. The man and woman (especially the
I have attached some photos. Here you see how the situation is in Calle Andrea Garcia Andreu in Gran Alacant. You have more vegetation in the street than in a park. The trees are even worse, they do not cut them, they are covered with insects, leaves are falling everywhere and even block the draining systems in the gardens of the houses. Even the road is not cleared, and thus even dangerous for the cars. I sincerely hope that something can be done in order to make the Council aware of
woman) deserve a medal, they stayed until it had stopped and they must have called a supervisor or manager as another man turned up and put more tape around the drain.
I think the man who was doing the spraying, was saying that the drain lids don’t fit properly. There are two main drains at the crossroads of C/Canaria 4 and it’s the crossroads by the construction site which gets a lot of heavy vehicles over it, every day. Maybe that has damaged/sprained the drain lids. I sure they will look at it after this morning, but can I ask you to contact, or chase up with whoever, that they are looking into this problem long term please.
been installed at hot spot areas. Between all of us, we make a team to make Santa Pola increasingly cleaner and liveable, if you see something, please contact us 965411103. Improved Drainage System Important works are underway to avoid flooding during heavy rainfall at Noruega Avenue in GA. The work will start at the end of August to avoid traffic congestion.
Kind regards, Lynne GA Advertiser Reply: We made the councillor aware of the faulty lid and hopefully the situation will be fixed soon.

Cleaning & Parks The Cleaning Council Parks and Gardens continue their work programme to clean and tidy the area. Fumigations Team Joint fumigations are being carried out with Santa Pola and Elche Councils in order to maximise efficiency. It is hoped that these increased performances will minimize the inevitable plague that will intensify with heat waves.
Illegal Dumping of Waste Materials We would like to thank local citizens for helping identify and report people who are depositing waste in and around Gran Alacant. For those caught violating the urban rules of cleanliness and hygiene, fines have been issued. Cameras have already
Improved Cleaning & Garbage Collection A new contract has been approved to improve the collection of garbage. Cllr Oscar Valenzuela said, “It is an important breakthrough to be able to have a quality cleaning and garbage service in the neighbourhood. It is very necessary due to the increase in population and lack of resources”. Defibrillators in Sports Facilities Defibrillators have now been installed in all Sports Facilities and employees have received their training on how to use them.
Ayuntamiento of Santa Pola At a recent extraordinary meeting of the council, the following works were approved: Construction of a new football field Construction of the new school Additional security cameras.

Alcohol & Drug Tests Riders of electric scooters are required by the Local Police to carry out the alcohol and drug tests. Sadly, some of them have tested positive for the drug test, which has resulted in 1000 euros fine. The new alcohol limit for minors is 0, 0 and 0,25mg/l for adults. Personal mobility vehicles, as well as bicycles, are considered vehicles so their riders are subjected to the traffic law. Aldi Aldi opened its doors to the public on 22nd June. This new store is 1,200 m2, will sell over 2,000 products, will employ 18 staff with a car park with over 120 spaces and will have 4 charging points for electric vehicles. We hope you enjoy your shopping experience at Aldi! Skywalk Improvements to the accessibility of the Skywalk are well underway.
Ever since the beginning of this terrible war of Putin’s Russia in Ukraine I’ve been feeling continuous support from my English-speaking friends here in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant. Everyone was showing interest in everything I was doing concerning volunteering with refugees, the situation of my relatives and friends in both Ukraine and Russia, etc. Finally, with Ukraine facing Scotland in the world football cup qualifiers on the 1st of June, my friends from Gran Alacant Walking Football Club and from and Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant did a grand thing. They raised a considerable sum of over 150 euro and generously handled it to me saying they trust me concerning where to spend it. I therefore decided to donate it to Vaba Lava Hostel in Narva, Estonia, directly on the border with Russia. Vaba Lava hostel accommodates Ukrainian refugees fleeing to Europe through Russian territory, doing fantastic job in helping those people during their first days in Estonia. We all hope for the war to end and for those responsible for it to be justly punished as soon as possible, but for now the only thing we may do is help in whatever possible way, so thanks again for each and everyone doing so! The Lowedown INTERVIEW
with Lynne
with Bianca Roos
Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 6 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. Over the next few months, I will be sharing some interviews with GA’s very own Superstars! This month’s interview is with Bianca Roos. Bianca is from the Netherlands and is a busy working mum. She has lived in Spain for the last 10 years. BIANCA, WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GRAN ALACANT? “I lived in Santa Pola for the first 5 years then I had the opportunity to buy my dream home in Gran Alacant. I fell in love with the house, the space and its ideal location. It is perfect for my dog Bella and I.” TELL ME ABOUT YOUR JOB … “When I first moved to Spain, I started working in a restaurant in Los Arenales Del Sol. It was there that I learned to speak Spanish. I met some people from Holland and Belgium who were looking for someone to do key holding for them and that is how Rose Costa Services began. My job gradually evolved to include more property management services. I feel like I am a Personal Assistant for clients and I take special care of their homes. I do everything from small jobs to the big complicated jobs so my clients do not have to worry about a thing.” “About 4 years ago, I realised people needed help investing here, so now I help clients buy and sell their properties. I love the twinkle a client gets in their eyes when they find their dream home.”
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR HOME LIFE … “My daughter Bridget is 19 years old. She recently graduated from school and following a work placement at Leticia’s beauty salon in Centro Commercial, she was offered a full time position.”
“I have been with my partner Grant for the last 7 years; he is a music producer and songwriter from England. We met through mutual Dutch friends. He has worked with
WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? “I am working with my friend Katrin to organise day trips, walking tours, small night trips and helping with yoga retreats. We have a similar outlook on life and want to share our passions of exploring and travelling with other people.” WHAT ARE YOU MOST GRATEFUL FOR? “I am grateful I found my dream home here in Gran Alacant. I am proud that my daughter is doing well and is happy in what she is doing. I have my lovely dog Bella and a very sweet boyfriend and friends. Sadly, I recently lost my Mum and my Dad’s health is not good. My moto is “Live for today as tomorrow is not guaranteed.””
U2 and has just produced two songs in the new Julian Lennon album.” Not only does Bianca speak Dutch, Spanish and English, she speaks German too! I love all the little personal touches around her home that act as a reminder of the Netherlands. WHAT DO YOU DO FOR FUN? “I take my dog Bella to agility classes. It is a lot of fun and we both get some exercise. I also love exploring and travelling. Often Bella and I will go off on an adventure exploring with a backpack full of snacks. There are so many beautiful walks in the surrounding area.”
I was fortunate enough to spend some quality time with Bianca at a recent Yoga Retreat. I found her to be a kind and caring soul with a wonderfully dry sense of humour.
Thank you Bianca for your time and for sharing your story with us.

Peace & quiet: Biar Perhaps we have got used to the peace and quiet of our coastline during the winter season so summer is fast approaching and the coastline gets busier we are being more and more attracted to the incredible mountainous landscape of inland Alicante. The valleys that criss-cross Alicante province are punctuated by stunning castles standing atop craggy rocks. These strongpoints, often forts dating back to the time of Muslim or even Roman rule, gradually became the focus of settlement leading to the creation of villages and towns spread out below the fortress ramparts. The valley of the river Vinalopo has a particularly striking collection of such castles and has been designated a cultural and historical route; “Ruta de Los Castillos”. The route includes the towns of Villena, Banyeres de Mariola, Castalla, Sax, Elda, Petrer and Novelda all featuring castles dating back to Muslim times. Juan is from Villena so we very often drive up to visit his family and
rarely miss the opportunity to enjoy the lovely village of Biar. The town, nesting in the foothills of the Serra del Reconco 39 kms from Alicante, clusters hard up to its picture perfect little mediaeval castle. This beautiful little
valenciano speaking town has a great combination of winding ancient streets and a truly stunning natural location. The town has an ancient history with opinion divided about whether its name derives from the Roman Latin word for “place of bees” or the Arabic word for “wells”. We started our visit in the Plaza de la Constitutión which contains the magnificent parish church, town hall and tourist office. The square also contains a restaurant which serves snacks and full meals. From the square it is possible to head down to the handsome Carrer de la Torreta which is a broad street lined with the historic town houses of the wealthier inhabitants of the town. Alternatively, it is possible to go from the Plaza de la Constitución up the hill towards the castle passing on foot through winding mediaeval streets. The effort of finding one's way up to the castle is rewarded by spectacular views down over the river valley below. The castle can be visited and it is a fascinating and beautifully preserved site believed to date back to an original Moorish fort built to subdue and control the surrounding countryside. Heading back down into the town one should head to the Via del Platano where there are cafes selling wonderful ice creams which can be eaten sitting under the shade of the stately trees that line the neighbourhood’s streets. The square has an incredible tree “El Platano’. This tree is a specimen of about 26 metres in height, more than six metres in diameter. Its age is estimated at more than 250 years and its great growth is due to its location, for centuries in an agricultural environment. It is a specimen of incalculable value from a botanical point of view as it is the oldest and thickest, of its kind, in the Valencian Community and
one of the largest in Spain. From there one can either follow a route down to the river valley skirting around the town exploring vegetable gardens and water meadows or alternatively one may take the Carrer de Camino de la Virgen which leads up out of town into the beautiful wooded hills towards the town’s hermitage. Taking the road to the hermitage one passes the ceramic works of Ceramica Artistica Maestre where it is possible to purchase pottery and ceramics in the works’ showroom. There are also historic sites such as a snow well formerly used to store ice and snow brought down from the hills in winter. The road finally leads to the hermitage of Santuari de la Mare de Deu de Gracia, a magnificent church housing the town’s Madonna. Next to the hermitage there are picnic tables and a car park for
the Puerto de Biar. These paths offer a refreshing combination of fresh air and views down the Vinalopo valley and you can even see the Med from high up; one can only envy the lucky few who live in the villas sparsely dotted amongst the pine trees. For those who chose to take the riverside path around the town it is possible to follow the river as it winds down from the hills to join the main channel of the Rio Vinalopo. The historical importance of the
waterway is apparent from the signs of ancient development including an extraordinary preserved mediaeval aqueduct that formerly brought fresh water into the town. One is very much walking through an ancient human landscape where people have lived and worked for many hundreds of years despite its current peaceful appearance! those not wishing to walk up from the town. From the hermitage there is a network of walking trails and paths leading up further into the beautiful hills behind the town, up the Reconco mountains or towards
Despite its relatively small size, Biar offers a fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable day out and will appeal to both those who love history as well as those who simply want to get lost in nature.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY
GAGS are now back to playing twice a week, Tuesday and Friday at 8am. We are looking forward to meeting up with our regular players and welcoming new members whether they be residents or visitors.
Time: on both days normally 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.
SOCIETY DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS: Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The official address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante.
Cost: usually €50 per round at peak times to include a buggy plus €1.50 mandatory insurance charge. It can sometimes be cheaper during less busy, off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires €5 sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round.
When: the formal Society Day is Tuesdays weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together every Friday which has always been a Gentleman’s Day.
We look forward to seeing you.

GRAN ALACANT RUNNING GROUP
Phew that was a hot spell in June but it doesn’t prevent or deter us from getting out running, cycling or exercising, but for some it does slow us down. Well, I am speaking in the first person here. This month hopefully will see, for the first time, the largest get together of our small band of runners here in Gran Alacant, where we will meet up for a joint social run, which will most probably end with a coffee or something stronger, but is certain to cement friendships which have been forming over the past two years. Our runners are from Sweden, Norway, Slovakia, France, Germany and of course the UK.
Our Indoor Sessions at the Polideportivo Gran Alacant on Av. D’Escandinavia,78 every Wednesday at 11am continue to be well attended despite the heat and with new members coming along to enjoy the sessions with our core of regulars. You will see us in our bright yellow running shirts (kindly donated by Philippe from GA Apres-Football continues to be enjoyed Homefinders) so if you see us join us for a run by all at the rear of La Piedra. or say hello. No matter your ability, if you are visiting the area and want to run with someStay safe everyone… one, please get in touch.
