We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month
Hello friends,
June is the month for one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “Bonfires of St. John”. The fiesta in the streets take place from the 20th to 24th, bullfighting from the 21nd to the 25th and one more extra on the 6th August. The cartoon monuments will be set up in the streets on the 20th and they will be burnt on the night of the 24th. The next five days after the burning of the cartoon monuments, there will be a fantastic international fireworks contest at midnight at Postiguet beach. On the night of the 23rd, hundreds of fires will be lit on the beach to celebrate ancestral rituals and traditions. There will also be a fiesta in Santa Pola on Levante beach as usual. Also all these municipalities that celebrate their main fiestas, Moors and Christians in: Elda 1st to 5th, Benjuzar, Teulada-Moraira 11th, Pego, Agost on 25th and Benissa. This month and the first few days in July, Santa Pola becomes a very sporty place! On the 16th 17th and 19th the VI hand ball Tournament will be held on the football field “Els Xiprerets” and also the VII International Volleyball competition in Gran Playa area. In Benissa from 1st ot 4th July fiestas and Moors and Chistians parade. International open waters swim Tabarca-Santa Pola will take place on the 9th of July with more than 1400 swimmers participating this year from 15 countries. That’s all for friends. Hello everyone, At last the fine sunshine has returned! There was a few cool nights in May which caught a few people out, me for one I ended up with a cold which persisted for a couple of weeks. I am sure most of you noticed a film crew around Gran Alacant recently; apparently it is for a major French film. We are slowly getting famous in Gran Alacant the word must be spreading! We hope you enjoy this month’s bumper edition of the magazine which is going from strength to strength, once again thanks to all our advertisers who continually support the magazine and please take a look at our new business directory on our website for a more in-depth look at all our advertisers. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 40 and Casper on page 38

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Gran Alacant very Rundown! Hi Guys, I was so disappointed to see how run down GA is looking at present! I was out recently for Easter and thought, with lots of people over for the Easter break that a special effort would have been made to do a Spring-clean at least I couldn't get over the amount of weeds everywhere! The seat areas on Avenue Mediterraneo look absolutely horrendous and so neglected! Who is responsible for the public areas in GA? Is it the Local Council or the Council in Santa Pola? It seems no one cares! Outside the Chinese Bazaar shop on the corner of Avenue Mediterraneo was particularly dirty with rubbish & weeds Again I foolishly thought that there might have been an improvement in the planting of some flowers/trees around ‌ just to try and take the "concrete jungle" look off each row of streets but no improvements at all done in the area I am seriously thinking of moving, even though I would miss the beautiful views of the sea and beach that we enjoy from our house. However even these are failing to outweigh the awful street scenes we encounter once we leave the house. Regards, Fiona Town Hall Answer: All these complaints have been transferred to the Infrastructure Department, so as they can manage all the solutions which are needed related to these public areas in Gran Alacant.
communities concerns over the sitting of a 4x4 event and training ground on the waste ground next to the school in Noruega 165. This is a totally inappropriate site as it is beside several urbanisations and a primary school. Also I feel that vehicles driving over the ground will damage the fauna, create a lot of noise and dust, I was told by the organisers that they expected up to 200 4x4 vehicles on the weekend in June. May I also ask if they are prepared to let this event take place what toilet facilities do they intend to provide, Also who’s responsibility will it be to clean up the area afterwards. When they used it the last time for training it had been raining and when they had finished the roads in front of our houses were covered in a large area of mud which caused problems with cars skidding on it when parents took the children to school the next morning incurring the use of the road sweeper to clean up. I consider the council to be very short sited if they this event goes ahead. I believe a petition has already been started and several pages of signatures collected so I would urge them to consider the wishes of the people of this area and withdraw the permission. Kind Regards, Martyn Town Hall Answer: This event has every permission needed, including the setting up of some portable bathrooms. The cleaning will be done by the company which is in charge of the cleaning service at Santa Pola, as always.
Q: 4x4 Car Track Dear Ged & Lou I wonder if at your next meeting with the GA councillor you could express my

Q: Clot the Galwany Benches Hi Ged and Lou, Another request for Gran Alacant please. The Clot de Galvany is a beautiful nature reserve, perfect for all nature lovers. We go there often. But PLEASE ask the Council if we could have some seats as we need to rest sometimes. Many thanks. Ann Paterson
BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS
P.S. If they agree to this request please inform them they don't need to buy any. There are hundreds around the unfinished area across from the Commercial Centre among the Solvia owned buildings. In Manuela Molina Segura road, a perfectly finished road with benches every 20 metres for people to sit on and admire the eyesore of the empty properties!
Town Hall Answer: Beggars are not committing any felony. However, when the person who ask for money says that it is for some reason (such as the children of Santa Pola), this is not legal.
Town Hall Answer: This request has been transferred to the Infrastructure Department, so as it can be studied and, thus, achieve the solution that neighbours want. Q: Cats Sir/ madam As home owners in, GA my wife & I are having our today me here ruined my a neighbour who has taken in stray cats. This person has up to six cats & several dogs & the smell is appalling with their urine & faeces. We've complained to our president, administrators & local police but nothing has been done. We are desperate for help. Many people here feel the same. This person doesn't even pay her community fees. She is allowed to do what she wants & this truly ruins our holidays here. Please can you help us? Name supplied Town Hall Answer: After consulting to the municipal lawyer, this is an issue that the administrator has to resolve, first trying to communicate with this person (the owner of the cats and the dogs), and if this is not possible, communicate with the Town Hall (Public Health and Police Departments). The person in charge of these kind of issues at Public Health Department is working at the second floor at Town Hall Building (next to my work place).
Q: Charity Collections A man is going around GA collecting money for the children of Santa Pola. Can you ask Town Hall if anyone is legal collecting money in this way? The Town Hall always told us in the past that NO COLLECTORS ARE LEGAL so do not give any money.
Q: Weeds I think that Gran Alacant has entered the competition for the “who can grow the highest weeds”. Looking at these, I think they have won hands down. It is disgraceful how GA allows weeds to be left in this disgusting state. These in the picture A are in the area between the first roundabout onto GA and the Church. The main route into lower Gran Alacant for all of our visitors. Years back a lovely stone banking had money spent on it, only now to see it regularly get in to this state. Surely someone from the Town Hall must drive past it now and again. Or do no Councillors come onto Gran Alacant!!
Picture B shows the area after the clearance work has taken place. Within a week it looks awful. The Town Hall replied when I last questioned this that weed killer applications would be dangerous. So then, why not pull the weeds out. It never in the past got this bad.

********** Just back from 2 weeks in the UK, visiting family and friends. Boy, was it cold. Now back to tee shirts and shorts. Just shows how lovely it is to live here in this glorious part of Spain. Does anyone agree or disagree?
Seeing so many complaints recently in this magazine about the general untidiness of our Gran Alacant, does it not occur to the Town Hall that something must be going wrong with those that look after our urbanisation. Town Hall Answer: This complaint has been transferred to the Infrastructure Department, so as the municipal garden officers can resolve this issue. However, the councillors are very concerned about Gran Alacant. We are very sorry if this person does not feel like that, because with this government team Gran Alacant has won 11 councillors, instead of the former 1 councillor they had before 2015. Q: Parking at GA Health Centre A problem that has always existed is the lack of parking space outside the GA health centre. Very difficult particularly if you are old or infirm. So guess what. A children's playground area has been installed again for the summer on what is already restricted space. The area has taken up a large part of the car park. Who makes these decisions? Town Hall Answer: These decisions are made by the municipal technicians, which are in charge of the security and the technical details. The lack of car park has always existed, and the roundabout usually has car parking enough, considering the timetable of the health centre. ********** In last month’s news I implied that a gang of bikers had ridden off from La Cesta without paying. The “gang” were in fact only 2 people who assumed each other paid and they were honest to return back later on to pay for their coffee. Sorry for any confusion. I hope any publicity good or bad, is always good publicity.

********** Pleased to see the reply in last months issue, that we will have a new sign at the entrance to GA. It does work to keep asking!!!!!!! Thank you Town Hall. ********** As many of us in Spain know, the big black bull signs are everywhere. Of particular interest is the one going out of Santa Pole on the way to La Marina along the N332. For years we have watched it regularly being covered in graffiti, then repainted, before being covered in paint, again and again. A few months back, the bull disappeared. Why?
It eventually re appeared in a slightly different place, all nicely painted in black. We hoped this meant that it had either been painted in such a way that it could not be vandalised again, or in fact, maybe a camera had been hidden someone to catch the culprits in event of it being attacked again. Yes, you have guessed it. The lovely newly painted bull has again been smeared with fresh paint. Who defaced the bull?. Was a camera set up and the culprits have been caught. We will put this question to the Town Hall next month to see if they can enlighten us! ********** If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

WARNING!!!
CONMAN
Hi there, I was reading your May addition and in the letters it mentions the chap who is going around asking for money to change his locks, he is a habitual conman and I caught him trying to con money out of a neighbour last year, he also conned money out of another friend of mine as well. I have a photograph of the man, which I took last year in my urb, it has been confirmed by lots of people that he is the man responsible. He tries to pick on holiday makers and as your magazine is in a lot of the premises, it would make sense to for his picture and awareness to be out there warning people, as it appears the Police won't deal with him.a He also tried to con one of my neighbours. It was about 9am, she was lying on the settee and he just walked into her front room. He started a conversation about being a neighbour and seeing someone steal her husband’s pipe, which had gone missing a few days earlier. He then started talking about being burgled and needing to get money to change the locks, luckily I was walking past and got involved in the conversation. He said he was a neighbour and was called Peter from Holland, although we believe he is a German. I realised who he was as one of my friends had been conned a few days before. He said he was going to speak to the President but went over to the mailboxes, where I took the photos of him and told him he was a conman! He then left our urb using a key, which opens all pedestrian gates along Ave Polonia. He is about 1.83 tall skinny build and smells of smoke alcohol and rough sleeping. Name Supplied
Hello Ged & Lou, Friday Evening 12th of May. A tall, gangly, seemingly distressed Dutch man, with undulating bodily movements, arrived at my door! Speaking perfect English he purported to have been broken into, his passports stolen, keys taken, local police, insurance, lock smith apparently of little or no help, had spent €500 for a lock smith and glazier etc etc. He informed me where he lived, adding to the credibility of his unfortunate situation, and requested details of the President responsible for the community in order that he might report the alleged incident. All seemed reasonably sound and authentic! However, having checked his supposed address the following day, which was secure and intact, with no sign of him or any break in having taken place, it became very evident that this was a SCAM ! My wife and I had our doubts from the very beginning of this unfortunate episode but, on this occasion as you sometimes do, preferred to give him the benefit of the doubt. Speaking to my Belgian neighbour afterwards she informed me that the same so called pretend Dutchman had also paid her a visit! Please spread the word, and unlike ourselves in this particular case, do not be so accommodating to someone who is clearly intent on doing no good ! Yours Sincerely, Resident of Altomar Two. Name supplied. Town Hall Response: The Police Department has been doing their research job and they are now looking for the man. However, if your magazine would publish the issue maybe other people would be warned about this man, and they won’t be tricked again by this person.

EL ALTET The president of the community, on his own initiative or any of the owners or occupants, will require the person who carries out the activities prohibited by this section the immediate cessation of the same, under the warning of initiating legal action.
Last month we received an email regarding an issue on a urbanisation in Gran Alacant, they have tried everything to get the problem solved but got nowhere so we contacted Mediafinc on their behalf and this is their advice and steps to take to hopefully resolve the situation. Question: Sir/ Madam, As home owners in, GA my wife & I are having our lives here ruined by a neighbour who has taken in stray cats. Name supplied Advice from Mediafinc: According to the description of his exposition, it should be pointed out that Law 49/1960, of July 21, on Horizontal Property, in its article 7 section 2 states: "The owner and the occupant of the apartment or premises are not allowed to carry out activities prohibited in the statutes that are harmful to the property or that contravene the general provisions on disturbing, unhealthy, harmful, dangerous or illicit.

If the offender persists in his conduct, the President, after authorization by the Board of owners, duly convened for this purpose, may bring against him an action of cessation that, in the case not expressly foreseen in this article, will be substantiated through ordinary judgment. Once the lawsuit has been filed, together with the accreditation of the mandatory request to the offender and the certification of the agreement adopted by the Board of Proprietors, the judge may order the immediate cessation of the prohibited activity, subject to a violation of disobedience. It may also adopt any precautionary measures necessary to ensure the effectiveness of the order of cessation. The claim must be directed against the owner and, if applicable, against the occupant of the dwelling or premises. If the sentence is an estimate, it may, in addition to the definitive cessation of the prohibited activity and the compensation for damages, proceed to deprivation of the right to use the dwelling or premises for a period not exceeding three years, depending on the Seriousness of the infraction and of the damages caused to the community. If the offender is not the owner, the judgment may definitively extinguish all of his rights regarding the dwelling or premises, as well as his immediate release. We understand that the communications to the neighbor that is provoking this situation have been made in a convincing way, made by both President and Administrator. If this has been the case, it is the responsibility of the Board of Owners to take the agreement to initiate legal proceedings so that it is the Judge who decides on the possible

PLAZA MAYOR EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives. head wounds disappeared from the Valencia property in late April, presumably moved by the owner to prevent their rescue.
Rescuing and not rescuing horses... Rescuing horses is hard work. It's emotionally, physically and financially draining. A lot of legal red tape also needs to be worked through, and relationships with authorities need to be created and maintained for us to be able to do our work.
The animals’ whereabouts and welfare is now unknown. In situations like these, we are reminded that not rescuing horses is even harder work. It's frustrating and draining and it can be hard to see the positives when you know that animals are suffering because of red tape and delays. Not rescuing animals also shows us that there is so much more work to be done.
Over the last nine years, we have developed what we consider to be a really good working relationship with local authorities. This relationship is crucial as fast action from authorities is vital when it comes to us rescuing starving and neglected animals. Sadly, in other areas of Spain though, this isn't always the case. We're devastated to report that police inaction recently prevented the rescue of two severely neglected horses in Valencia. After a month of delays by local authorities, including police and Seprona, the two neglected horses plus a dog with visible

Right now we are calling on the Spanish government to fund centres like our own. We need that funding because Spanish authorities have nowhere to house equines when they are seized. Yet the current animal welfare system requires a rescue centre to agree to take any abused equine before it can be legally seized. The twisted irony of these laws is what causes delays and gives neglectful owners time to escape persecution and flee with their animals. We need to make sure that people hear about these two beautiful horses in Valencia, and that their suffering doesn't go unnoticed. Because together, we can request action from the government and appeal to the police to act on denuncia reports as quickly as possible. Together we can change animal welfare in Spain. Please help us spread the word and demand change.

One pony we did manage to save Meet gorgeous little Perlita, a 22-year-old mare who was surrendered to us by her Spanish family on April 22. As you probably know, we almost never accept horses like this, as we find many people simply try to dump their unwanted animals on us and we do not have the resources to cope. But Perlita’s case is very different. She was owned by a Spanish man who’d loved and cared for Perlita her entire life (she was literally born inside this man’s house), but who is now very old and frail and can no longer care for her. With nowhere else for Perlita to go, we agreed to take her. A veterinary examination has now revealed that Perlita likely had laminitis in the past, so we will do our best through corrective farrier work to make her more comfortable.

Monday 24th April. Monte Mar entertained a visiting team from Chiltern Bowls Club. Six games of rinks were played on a warm and sunny day. Monte Mar did very well but results are not important, as everyone had a very enjoyable and friendly morning's bowling. After the game we all had a lovely meal together in the Rincon Restaurant. The extra bonus for the visitors was that they won both raffle prizes. Over the last few weeks we have lost two of our long standing club members at Monte Mar. Ken Eagleton. In March one of the original club members, Ken sadly passed away. Ken did not bowl so often during the latter years, but he really enjoyed his visits to the club when he did turn out. He was always a very friendly character who liked a laugh and a joke with anyone. He and Sheila attended some club social functions it was always a pleasure to see them. Our condolences go to Sheila and family.
Fisher. The opposition from San Louis was Steve Simmons, Keith Jones, Sabrina and Russell Marks. Monte Mar walked on water that day and kept San Louis off the score board until the tenth end. San Louis conceded the game after sixteen ends the score being 21 to Monte Mar – 11 to San Louis. A good eight days bowling and the weather was kind, some days a bit chilly but dry. Well done to all who took part, a special well done to Roy Mercer, Jan Gatward, Geraldine and Gordon Fisher on winning the Mixed Rinks.

A task which kept him busy much of the time, Judy was always there in the background. In last month's G A Advertiser there is a photo of Judy presenting a

WONDERFUL DONATION FOR M.A.B.S
It was with great sadness that we heard the news of Ken Eagelton known as Ken the spoon man who played his spoons wherever he went. Ken and Sheila, his lovely wife, were always around to support M.A.B.S. and give their services to whatever needed doing. Our Ken as I called him, supported us in a few of our shows with his spoons and comedy acts. Sheila suggested that in place of flowers, donations to the M.A.B.S. hospice fund would be wonderful as that is what Ken would have wanted. Our thanks go out to Sheila and all who donated on that sad day including the Inter Club. Ken was very much loved by all whose path he had crossed. He will be missed by many but never ever will be forgotten. Lots of love to you Sheila and your family. The donations came to 350 euros. Thank you so much xxx Jeans, M.A.B.S. Chatter
British General Election Just after Easter, on Tuesday April 18, Theresa May called a press conference, outside Downing Street. The Prime minister announced, she would ask The House of Commons, to approve her plan, to hold a General Election on June 8th. The last Government, had brought in legislation, to enshrine fixed term Parliaments, of five years, into law. Since the last General Election was in 2015, Mrs May was asking, for the approval, of at least two thirds of MP’s, to call one early, the only way, she would be able to do so. The last Conservative Government, won a working majority of 12 seats, enough to govern independently, without the need of support, from any other political party; a small number, compared to other victories in the past, but enough to pass manifesto promises. So what exactly were the reasons, the Prime minister called the Election, when she did; what had changed? Brexit was the official reason behind, Mrs May’s call for an early vote: ‘The country is coming together but Westminster is not.’ she claimed, speaking outside her official residence. "Division in Westminster will risk our ability to make a success of Brexit". She continued. Is there more to this, than at first meets the eye; what are the real motives, behind Theresa May’s election call? It is true to say, that Brexit, is the underlying factor, behind this dissolution of Parliament. Article 50, the mechanism used for withdrawal from the European Union, was triggered in March of this year. The time scale for withdrawal is estimated at two years, which would bring us up to 2019, only a few months away from the official date, of the scheduled
38
next election. At the most crucial stage, the winding up of negotiations with the EU, the UK, would be thrown into election mode. This could influence any deals done, as part of the process, while politicians and political parties, make a play for power. The finalisation of any delicate dialogue, between two opposing groups, is the hardest, the last leg, where any faults are ironed out. The distraction of a General Election at this time, could have been catastrophic. You have to remember, we are deciding on everyone’s future, the risks involved, in diverting attention, away from the most important decisions of a life time, is too much to comprehend. For this reason alone, the Prime minister was right, in calling for an election. A positive outcome for Britain, with the right settlement, guaranteeing a bright future for us and the EU, is dependent on focused intercession. An election, cementing whichever parties manifesto, to carry their policies forward, is in my view necessary. Presently Mrs May, remains an unelected Prime minister. If she, or whoever wins, does so resoundingly, it can only strengthen their hand. The Labour Party and Liberal Democrats, have also been signalling, their intentions, to disrupt, any necessary legislation, with regards to Brexit, passing through Parliament. With a slim majority, the Conservative Government, may well have come up against some difficult challenges. At a time when all politicians, from whichever party, should be working together, for the good of the country, the spectre of disunity, was another factor, when deciding to go to the country and get that mandate needed, for robust, decisive Government at a time of National importance. Finally the opinion polls; of course Theresa May has studied the political atmosphere. She is riding high in the polls, at the same

time Labour is suffering from a lack of firm leadership and an inappropriate master at the helm, who has clung on to power, by the skin of his teeth. His ineffectual, weak and lackluster approach has left the Labour Party languishing, with low approval ratings, across the country. As an opportunist, Mrs May, would have been foolish, not to take advantage of her poll position. The general public, currently see her, as a firm, strong and secure pair of hands, when we need such a person. Theresa seems balanced and measured, at least where Brexit is concerned. As an Expat, I have already voted in the Election, I have done so, in every vote, local, national and European, since I was able to put a cross, on the ballot paper. People fought for the right to express their opinion; we should never sit idle, without a voice, letting others decide the direction, we should take. Although living in Europe now, I believe it is more important to vote than ever. For the first time in a generation, a General Election in the UK, will ultimately, directly and absolutely affect our status as Expats. My only concern is for my future, living in Spain, as selfish as that may seem and I voted for the party, I believe, will get the best deal for me. As one would expect, there has been a lot of chatter, from my neighbours, with regards to the up coming election; for those of us who live here, it is yet another vote, to determine our destiny. The common train of thought is, ‘how forgotten we are, as voters.’ No one represents us, in the same way an MP, represents his constituency. Decisions are being made in Westminster, that will influence all our lives, living on the continent and we, as individuals, have very little say in that process. Expats are pretty conservative as a rule; most have still got firm links with the UK, through
family and friends; many return on a regular basis. We celebrate the holidays Britain celebrates and express our Britishness, far more vocally than those back home. In many ways, as I discovered when I moved here, small enclaves like Gran Alacant, offer a way of life, long since gone in the UK. Expats respect their roots and want to see the best for their country. Many Expats voted for Brexit, because of their belief in self determination, which I believe, to be a very British trait. The majority of my neighbours will vote in this General Election, probably a higher percentage, than those who actually live in the UK, yet we are heard least; that is a terrible indictment, on how we are treated as individuals, just because we decided to move abroad. In a weeks time, Britain will have decided on a new Government, possibly a different direction, most certainly a landmark vote, that will ultimately decide our future living in Spain. Of course there are important issues back home, that we play no part in, but our mark on the ballot paper, counts equally, more now than ever. If you haven’t voted, can’t be bothered or believe it doesn’t matter or relate to you, then you can’t complain, if circumstances don’t go your way. I come from a very politically aware family; my father stood for election many times, in the small market town, where I grew up and although we didn’t always see eye to eye, we both have the same political blood running through our veins; believing everyone who can vote, should. Look around the World, look at those who have no voice. We, unlike them, have opportunities to change what we don’t approve of; our voice matters. The people spoke up during the EU referendum and they changed Britain’s fate; elections do matter, can change a countries direction fundamentally, crown a new Prime minister and above all, give power to a party, that will use it to change lives; lives will be changed after June 8!

Prepare your body, mind & soul for summer!
PREPARE FOR SUMMER Finally! Summer is on its way. It is now time to enjoy the sun. It is also the perfect time to prepare your body before summer actually kicks in!
Time to Relax Now days are a lot longer, people tend to be cheerful, in high spirits and a bit idle too. This idleness can be a positive thing and at certain times of day we can indulge in it. Being at peace and feeling relaxed lets the mind to slow down, stop racing and concentrate. Whenever you feel exhausted or snowed under, take a deep breath and it will surely calm you down.
Shape up Begin by having a daily exercise routine. It is crucial to be active and mobile as winter is normally spent sitting on couches and watching telly with a packet of crisps to nibble. Start your regime at home with a simple workout then go outside to exercise. Should you wish to lose the extra pounds that you gained during wintertime, you should have an exercise routine to follow. Prepare your body for the summer by
48
having a year-round exercise regime and another is to use this routine and enhance it by adding something new.
Something New The nice weather creates that feeling of being inspired, productive and adventurous. It would be ideal to record your progress when beginning a new challenge so you are inspired as you set out to reach your target. Whether it is a new personal best in jogging or amazing yourselves by fighting your fears and engaging in a new activity, this is a good idea to keep motivated and alert. Why not to try pilates class with Gabriela Auzoberria at Santara Resort. She is a fully qualified instructor and the first session is FREE. What have you got to lose?
Getting rid of embarrassing body hair Having unwanted hair may prevent you from flaunting your body during the summer season. That is why it is best to get rid of them so nothing can stop you from wearing summer clothes. To do this, you may try temporary methods such as shaving, waxing or threading of the hair.

This is a perfect opportunity to get yourself booked at QfB salon and make use of their special offer on waxing this month.
Exfoliate Winter weather can cause dead skin. Hence, it is best to get rid of them by scrubbing your body to peel them off. It won’t only keep your skin looking young but it will also stop any ingrown hair and keep your tan for a longer period of time.
Get a tan Many people aspire to have a great tan in the summer. Instead of making yourself tan under the sun, it is better to try using products that will give you the perfect summer tan look. It is common knowledge nowadays that too much exposure to the sun is not good for one’s skin and health. Apply sunscreen and use tan sprays and creams for that ideal summer radiance. Apart from getting our daily dose of Vitamin D or healthy tan, it is very important that we keep safe. Moisturise well before applying any tanning product and wash hands thoroughly afterwards.
Summer Beauty Part of our body that gets a lot of abuse during the summer period is our hair and skin. We tend to forget that they easily dry out due to sun exposure and saltwater damage. Pamper yourself with your own spa for hair and skin and enjoy making awesome products from natural ingredients. Gaby my style salon on Avda.Escandinavia offers a full range of top quality REDKEN products to protect your hair this summer.
Healthy Diet It is important to keep your body hydrated during the summer time. It is vital to drink plenty of water. You can also make hydrating more delectable by creating flavoured water at home. Food with high water content like cucumber, watermelon
and other fresh and seasonal produce are in abundance, which we can add in our diet. You can read more about the importance of keeping hydrated in Rachel’s Peas&Love article. Whether you like it or not, you eat a lot during winter period since you spend most of your time indoors. That is why it is high time to say au revoir to the unhealthy junk food and include organic food to your meal. To feel lighter, eat fresh vegetables and fruits. Summer can be harmful on your skin and body so it is advisable to drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated and moisturised. It is also a key element in toning up your body and breaking down one’s body fat. In fact, water has endless benefits.
Time to Change One thing that is permanent in life is change. As seasons change, we should change as well. This is the right time to adjust not only what we wear but also the places we spend most of our time in. Try to de-clutter and give away items or clothes that you do not use or wear in the previous year. Ask yourself what you want to achieve, visualise the end result and if it doesn’t match the vision, then it is time to part with it. Easy Horse Care charity shop on Calle Holanda (beside Dialprix) will appreciate all your donations. You will not only de-clutter your wardrobe but you will also be helping a good cause.
Create Memories Think of summer and one will often think of holidays. All year round, we spend our time looking forward to a little extra moment spend with our loved ones. Taking photographs and selfies should not be enough. Have a box for all your souvenirs or keepsakes and save the precious memories you’ll want to reminisce later on.

SPORT AND AGE
Just some of the benefits of regular activity are: • • • • • • • •
Reduces joint pain Improves movement and flexibility Helps weight loss Improves insomnia Increases muscle and bone mass Regulates intestinal activity Reduces anxiety and the risk of depression Helps coordination
So in summary, promotes long term self sufficiency. Hi, how are you? This month I thought I would talk about a concept that we all know is good for us and the more we read or hear about it, we think about it and go out and do it if we haven´t already taken it up. We are talking about sport and age. We all know that physical exercise is good for every age group – improving quality of life and preventing all types of future health problems. Before doing any kind of physical activity, and especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle, it´s important to take into consideration: • Age • Personal history both sport and health (heart and respiratory problems for example need particular caution) • Current level of physical fitness • Aims – fun, fitness, health or competitive The elderly and physical activity: Being older doesn´t mean having to spend all day sat or lying down and regularly spending all day on your own isn´t good for you. Older people are advised to take part in some kind of well supervised or personalized group physical activity as it´s proven to have both physical and psychological benefits.
52
Before starting an activity, the program and recommendations need to be personalized as it´s essential to know the limitations of each person. As mentioned previously, it could be necessary for example to have an electrocardiogram or a visit to a reputable physiotherapist for advice on what needs to be improved. If weight is an issue too, then it´s important to combine exercise with a sensible diet and remove or reduce all those foods that stop weight loss.

53
SANTARA LIFE RESORT It is also important to choose an activity that you like in order to stay motivated. Many older people, either with or without health problems, choose walking as a healthy and effective way of exercising. It´s important to avoid impact or hills and this in particular has to be taken account of where we live here in Gran Alacant! Choose somewhere flat, such as the lower part of GA and Arenales seafront. As mentioned in a previous article, it is important to stretch afterwards. Other suitable activities could be Pilates, Yoga, swimming or Tai Chi but you should always do these under the control of a professional teacher.
to be taken into account during training from a young age. This means it´s possible to start strength exercises before the onset of adolescence but not with the objective of increasing muscle mass, more an improvement of muscle fibre through movement and coordination. This type of training can start as young as 8 when the nervous system has reached an important developmental stage. An example of improving intermuscular coordination
SPORT AND CHILDREN: If we regularly do exercise ourselves, it is much easier for our children to make exercise a regular part of their lives too … this is a healthy way to educate our children, they will copy our habits and later on it will be much harder for them to give it up. There are many ways to increase the
training would be throwing games, circuits, etc. At the age of puberty, it´s then possible to start intermuscular strength training. By now a young person´s technique will have improved enormously and even if he doesn´t go on to be a competitive athlete, doing sport for fun will improve the quality of his life.
amount of sport children do and increase their quality of life, particularly for the future. There are many influences on childhood development: hormonal, neurological, environmental …while the hormonal change, with which come the important physical changes of puberty, happens between 11 and 14, the neurological changes have actually been happening long before this age so these things have
54
So ... we can see the importance of physical activity throughout our lives. For me, the most important thing is to enjoy it and because it does us good. It should become such a part of our lives like breakfast or sleep, that it is a necessity! Thank you for reading … next month we will look at women and sport, a subject that needs a separate article of its own. Until next time ... THE KITCHENS OF THE FUTURE
There is much talk about the role that the kitchen is taking in the home as a multifunctional space. Studies indicate that we are heading towards a future where the focal point of the house will return to the heat of the oven. And all we can say is “Welcome back” because that is how it was traditionally until more wealthy people decided to relax in the living room and get away from the smells of the kitchen. The advances in kitchen appliances have made these fumes and odours dissipate quickly and therefore, we can now take a professional look at our cooking space. Now the kitchen’s importance in the home has increased. It has become a very versatile space where you can perform almost any activity. It can be an open plan space to share with all members of the family.

False alarm An elderly lady called the police to report that her car had been broken into. “They’ve stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal, even the accelerator!”. The officer replied, “don’t worry, madam an officer is on his way”. A few minutes lady, the woman called back. “Would you mind telling the officer not to bother. I’ve just realized I got into the back seat by mistake!” Jerry and Bill were sitting in the lounge of their nursing home when one of the female residents suddenly ran past stark naked. “Was that Doris?” asked Jerry. “I couldn’t be too sure” replied Bill. “My eye sight’s not so good these days”. “Neither is mine! What do you think she was wearing?” asked Jerry. “I don’t know” said Bill. “But it sure needed ironing!”

A Grim Outlook A middle -age woman accompanied her husband on his annual medical check up. Afterwards the doctor took her to one side and said, ‘I am affraid I have some bad news. Unless you follow a strict routine, your husband will die. Every morning, you must give him a good healthy breakfast and in the evening you must cook him a nutritional meal. You musn’t burden him with any household chores, you must keep the house spotless and you must attend to his every need. I realize it will mean extra work for you, but it really is the only way to keep him alive.” On their way home, the husband asked his wife what the doctor had said to her. ‘Oh’ she replied. “ He said you are going to die”.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee City of Arts and Sciences - Valencia Hi , my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 9 years now. My 7 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we want to share with you the fun and amazing experiences we had during a long weekend in the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia. If you have ever wondered what Valencia is like and are a fan of architecture then this part of Valencia, which is actually listed as one of the 12 Treasures of Spain, is definitely worth a visit. It is located just a couple of hours away (even without using the toll roads) and the journey takes you through some amazing scenery. Sitting at one end of the Jardin del Turia park and surrounded by lots of water, the fascinating architectural buildings and structures that form the City of Arts and Sciences, were designed by architects Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela. The first stages of construction started in 1996 and weren´t finished until 2005. “The Umbracle” is the gateway to the City of Arts and Sciences, this 1,000 m2 green area contains an open-air art gallery with sculptures and a large number of different plants, chosen because their shapes and colours change throughout the year. Within the “City” itself you will find the “Reina Sofia Opera House” and performing arts centre, where lots of different opera, musical and theatrical

performances take place. Next to it is the “Hemisferic”, (or the “eye of knowledge”) which resembles an eyelid and is a 13,000 m2 IMAX cinema and planetarium.
Whilst there we even took a quick trip into space, much to the girls delight! “The Agora” is a covered plaza in which concerts and sporting events are held. Built in the shape of a water lily, the “Oceanográfic”, is the largest oceanographic aquarium in Europe. The focus here is on marine conservation and they have over 500 species, including dolphins, penguins, turtles, sharks and rays, the tunnel aquariums are incredible and extremely long.
The 42,000 m2 ”Príncipe Felipe Science Museum” is designed to look like the skeleton of a whale. It has the largest exhibition space in Spain and is home to an amazing interactive museum.
The “Jardines del Turia” park is a really peaceful place to walk, cycle or relax with a picnic, in stunning surroundings. We jumped on the local “park train”, which takes you around the waterfountains and walkways and hopped off at the famous Gulliver Park. This park has a large model of Gulliver lying on the ground where everyone can have lots of fun climbing on and sliding off of various parts of his body. So what are you waiting for!!!! Get yourself booked on a mini-break and go and experience the amazing things the City of Arts and Sciences has to offer. We will definitely be going again. Join us next month for some more fun “Out and About”.

WATER IS ESSENTIAL FOR LIFE The miracle that is water which is more often overlooked and underrated. It is an essential element to all life on earth. Vital to all living beings whether animal or plant; we are all highly dependent on this precious resource. Without a doubt it is one of the most undervalued natural resources that we possess on this planet and it is priceless in our existence. Water is central to our wellbeing aside from quenching thirst drinking the right amount of clean water is beneficial to our overall health in countless ways. Water is the main component of the human body and makes up between 50-75% of body weight. It extremely important in aiding digestion, flushing out waste and toxins, lubricating the joints and organs such as the eyes, keeping the skin in good health, stabilizing body temperature, helping normal kidney function, aiding in building and repairing cells, helping to carry nutrients in the blood, assisting the efficient metabolism of all nutrients and metabolising nutrients efficiently amongst other functions.
Signs of dehydration
Symptoms of being dehydrated can be mild, moderate and severe, dehydration occurs when the body loses more fluid than it intakes, this upsets the natural balance of minerals (salt and sugar) in the body which affects the way it functions. Urination, defecation, breathing, sweating and vomiting all can cause fluid lose and lead to dehydration. Early signs of dehydration are the obvious ones thirst and dark coloured urine other symptoms may include: • Dry mouth, lips and eyes • Tiredness/ fatigue • Headache • Dizziness or light-headed • Cramps • Hunger • Dry skin • Constipation When dehydration is ongoing (chronic) it can cause a detrimental effect on kidney function increasing the risk of kidney stones, and can lead to muscle damage. Signs of severe dehydration may require medical attention:

Not passing urine for eight hours Weak pulse Rapid pulse Fits (seizures) Low level of consciousness Dizziness when you stand up that doesn’t disappear after a few seconds Feeling lethargic or confused
Dodge dehydration
Water requirements vary from person to person plus their environment such as temperature, humidity, altitude, pregnancy/ breastfeeding and physical activity, all of these facts will influence the requirement for water. A easy indication to determine whether you are consuming adequate amount of fluid is by the colour of the urine, lighter/clear colour being the well hydrated this is what you should be aiming for ideally, the darker the colour of the urine tends to indicate dehydration, this tends to happen first thing in the morning also note that taking vitamin and multivitamin supplements may change the colour of the urine. Diabetes, Prescription drugs, working out, Alcohol and Caffeine all can affect hydration. It’s highly important to make sure we drink enough fluids and to stay hydrated all the time, especially with summer around the corner and temperatures rising, there are a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables that you can also incorporate into your diet that contain an extremely high water content which can also help keep you well hydrated. Cucumbers 97% water Celery 96% water Iceberg lettuce 96% water Tomatoes 95% water Pineapple 87% Red, yellow, green peppers 92-93% water Broccoli 91% Watermelon 92% water
Infused water combos
If you’re not a fan of plain water and think it’s a bit boring Infused waters are a great idea since they are refreshing, they help flush out toxins and can aid in weight loss. So instead of grabbing a can of fizzy drink next time you’re thirsty maybe try jazzing up your water by giving these combinations a whirl. Enjoy! Orange & kiwi Raspberry & mint Lemon & cucumber

THINK POSITIVE
WHY EUROPE NEEDS ‘POSITIVE LISTS’ TO REGULATE THE SALE AND KEEPING OF EXOTIC ANIMALS AS PETS The Belgian Positive List is designed according to the following criteria: 1. Animal welfare: Animals must be easy to keep and kept with respect to their essential physiological, ethological and ecological needs. 2. Environment: No species should be listed for which there are clear indications that, in case an animal escapes, it would be able to survive in nature and consequently represent an ecological risk. 3. Human health: The animals should not be aggressive by nature and/or dangerous, or expose the health of humans to any other particular danger. 4. Husbandry: Bibliographic information must be available concerning the keeping of these animals. 5. No doubt: In case of contradictory data or information on the possibilities to keep an animal, the animal should be given the benefit of doubt, i.e. it will not be on the list. The Netherlands The Netherlands is in the closing legislative stages for a Positive List for mammals, scheduled to come into force in 2014. The regulation is part of the regulation ‘Keepers of Animals’, which establishes the following criteria to assess the suitability of animals as pets: 1. The need of an animal to move and the need for a special environment (e.g. habitat, migration, territory). 2. The average size of the adult animal (e.g.
114
size, body mass). 3. The need of an animal for periods of activity or inactivity during the day or the season (e.g. nocturnal/diurnal, hibernation etc.). 4. The need of an animal to forage and eat, including the composition of his diet (e.g. foraging behaviour, frequency). 5. The degree of need for safety and possibility to shelter (e.g. defensive behaviour, climate sensitivity). 6. The degree of need of the animal to reproduce and raise their young (e.g. parenthood, reproduction, infanticide). 7. The need of the animal to groom. 8. The social or biosocial needs of the animal. 9. The degree of need of the animal for stimulation and enrichment (e.g. the need for play, digging substrates). Besides taking the animal welfare risks into account, the regulation also prescribes that keeping the animal will not cause an unacceptable degree of danger for humans, other animals or the environment. THE FUTURE: POSITIVE LISTS IN EUROPE A Positive List is the single most effective and efficient measure to reduce the suffering of exotic animals being kept unsuitably as pets in Europe. Especially when considering the issues of invasiveness and human and animal health risks, the open internal market makes it crucial to achieve Positive Lists in a significant number of countries. continued on p.116-117 ...

CLINICA VETERINARIA GRAN ALACANT EXOTICS

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
INTRODUCTION There are more than 200 million pets in Europe, including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and amphibians. However, many species, especially exotic animals, are unsuited to a life in captivity. This may result in severe animal welfare problems, and can also be detrimental to biodiversity, have a negative impact on public health, and present a danger to the health of other animals. Therefore, the impacts of keeping exotic pets can have high costs across many sectors. Rescue centres are increasingly confronted on a daily basis with the problems that stem from this trade. Owners may no longer want their pet because it was an unsuitable match from an impulsive and poorly-informed purchase. Much animal suffering and neglect could be avoided if prospective owners considered factors such as: life span, adult size, social needs, cost of care and veterinary treatment, and requirements for appropriate temperature, humidity, lighting, and stimulating social and physical environments. Such unsuitable matches of exotic pet keeping is the direct consequence of absent or inadequate laws and regulations, which cause a situation in which the demand for rescue is significantly higher than the actual capacity of rescue facilities. There are several ways to regulate the keeping and sale of exotic pets, but a Positive List (a list of allowed species) is the most effective, concise, transparent, enforceable and economically feasible way. ‘This kind of legislation really works. The Belgian experience has shown that the introduction of a positive list leads to a clear diminishing of the number of animals of non listed species ending up in shelters or rescue centers. There is a very strong support of the general public for this legislation, leading to a strict social control. This in turn guarantees efficient enforcement without a need for extra investments on the part of the public services.’

Certain exotic species may present a safety risk to humans from their predatory, aggressive or poisonous nature. Species such as venomous snakes, pythons, crocodilians, large cats and primates can injure humans through poisoning, biting or clawing. Adult animals can be quite strong and present a risk, particularly to small children. In 2013, in Canada, two young boys were killed in their sleep by a python which lived in the apartment they were visiting. According to news reports, ‘the snake was housed in a large glass enclosure that reached the ceiling of the apartment. It escaped through a small hole in the ceiling connected to the ventilation system.’ The owner of the snake also owned the pet store located under the apartment. Health of other Animals The exotic pet trade may have a serious negative impact due to the spreading of diseases to other animals. An Egyptian fruit bat imported in 1999 and sold in a pet shop in Bordeaux, France died of rabies two months later. This led to the euthanasia of all animals which had possible contact with the bat and the vaccination of almost 130 people. In 2000, the US banned the import of three species of tortoises that had the potential to carry heartwater

disease and could cause mortality rates of 60% in cattle and up to I00% in sheep. Costs Catching and eradicating invasive alien species, treating people because of zoonotic diseases, the fight against illegal trade and the slaughtering of thousands of farm animals in order to prevent the spreading of diseases generates hundreds of billions of dollars globally. The European Commission estimates the costs of controls and damage from invasive alien species in the EU at 12 billion euros per year (a conservative estimate). Additional costs derive from illegal trade and treating wildlife-originated diseases. CURRENT LEGISLATION Within the European Union the competence to legislate on the subject of exotic pets belongs to Member States. As documented in Eurogroup’s ‘Analysis of national legislation related to the keeping and sale of exotic pets in Europe’ (2013), where such legislation exists, it is very diverse. Legal provisions may ban the keeping of some species of animals (Negative or black list), or allow only some species to be kept (Positive or white list). Keeping may also requireauthorization in the form of a license. WHY A POSITIVE LIST AND NOT A NEGATIVE ONE A Positive List is preferable to a negative format due to its simplicity: a concise list of animals that may be kept provides clarity to owners and enforcement agencies and creates less regulatory bureaucracy for governments. This reduces administrative costs and lowers the judicial backlog currently generated by deciding matters of animal welfare when there is an appeal by the pet owners. Additionally, the Positive List approach has already received support from the European Court of Justice. Negative lists need to be continually updated in a slow and burdensome process as new species are observed being kept as
pets, the conservation status of a species becomes critical or incidents occur with species threatening human and animal health and the environment. For these reason, negative lists will always lag behind new trends in exotic pet keeping and shifts in the trade, and create a false sense of acceptability regarding the safety and welfare of keeping certain species. When the import of red eared sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans) from North America was forbidden in the EU, the yellow eared sliders (T. s. troostii) became popular as an alternative species, and have also been introduced in the environment. SUCCESS STORIES Belgium A Positive List for mammals had been under discussion since 1989 and was introduced by Royal Decree in 2001. This unprecedented legislative move caused a stir in national and international circles, and the regulation was challenged in court as hindering trade between EU Member States. In June 2008 the European Court of Justice ruled that the Belgian Positive List was not in violation of EU free trade regulations as long as it was based on objective and non-discriminatory criteria and a procedure was in place for parties to request the inclusion of species on the list (Andibel ruling). The final Royal Decree of 2009 maintains the same 42 species on the list and includes an Annex of criteria according to which species can be evaluated for their inclusion on the list. Taken from AAP (Rescue Centre for Exotic Animals) & Eurogroup for Animals. Apart from the catastrophic environmental effects for being an invasive species, in case of Florida terrapenes, we must add that, according to an article from CEU Cardenal Herrera University, about 30% of these terrapenes are a source of the dangerous disease Salmonellosis, which may be lethal for humans, so we should better forget about having these animals as companion pets. But remember, if you already have one at home, just releasing it is not the solution.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
GOLDEN ORIOLE
Sit tight because I've got a personal story to tell you. It might seem a little selfindulgent, but it explains why I find Spain and its birds so fascinating. Older British readers might remember the small “Observer's” books published in the 1950's. These were pocket-sized, and covered many different subjects, but the one I remember most was my wellthumbed copy of “The Observer's Book of Birds”, which introduced me to birdlife, had a coloured illustration on one page and a short description of each bird on the other. The bird which fascinated me most was thew, a stunning-looking bird which the book noted was quite rare, and because it was rare it suffered from the attentions of “the man with the gun”; in those days it was still acceptable to shoot anything that moved. I hoped I'd see one before they were all shot. I never did – they were confined to a very limited area and even there they were difficult to find. For the next sixty years I wondered if it was something I would never see, until I began to study Spanish birdlife. I discovered that it was not as rare as in the UK, but still it proved difficult to find. I learned the bird's distinctive song, and a few times I heard them, but once again a
118 118
sighting proved to be elusive. Two years ago, an experienced birdwatcher took me to a known site, and after a long search there it was – all three seconds of a sighting as it flew over our heads and disappeared into the tree canopy, where they become almost invisible despite their bright colour. This year I decided to make a concerted effort to photograph one. I had to go all the way to Castilla La Mancha, and an area near Bonete just over an hour's drive from Alicante. My companion and I found the site, heard the birds calling and had the occasional glimpse as they flitted between the trees. We tried to keep up with them, we tried to imitate the call (a fluty whistle which is quite easy to mimic) but it looked as though we would never get a clear shot with our cameras. Suddenly we saw one right out in the open! It was a good 200 yards away from us, but we had long telephoto lenses and got fairly acceptable shots, one of which you can see here, before the bird disappeared once again. Technically it's not a great shot, but for me it is the fulfilment of a lifetime ambition, and I hope you don't mind me sharing it with you. No, you probably won't see one in the Clot, although you should never say never – one was seen last year behind one of the Gran Alacant urbanisations up the hill, proving that anything can turn up anywhere. If you'd like a chance to see one, your best bet is to contact the good people at the Costa Blanca Bird Club (search for them online) who will advise you of the best places to go, but the Golden Oriole is one of the jewels of the bird world, and needs as much effort to find as searching for buried treasure You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month.
