JUNE 2022 ISSUE 209
Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com MAINTENANCE ISSUES Dear Lou & Ged I have attached a few photographs of Avenida Carabassi near Mediterraneo II and III. The plants and weeds are well established on the road gutters causing blockages when it rains. I know some ground between the green fence near the Clot is being cleared, but we seem to be left behind at this area of Gran Alacant.
Why are the Council not looking after GA and putting some money into flowers, trees and generally making the area more attractive?
I would appreciate if you can pass information on for appropriate action to be taken. Kind regards Lea
Hi Lou & Ged I am writing to you about the neglect of Monte y Mar and GA in general. I am beginning to feel like a broken record. I have attached some photos of weeds, litter and seating areas, which are overgrown and neglected.
Keep up the fantastic work you do with the GA Advertiser. Best wishes Fiona

MOSQUITOE FUMIGATIONS Mosquito season is upon us! Elche City Hall and Santa Pola Health Council continue the weekly fumigation programme to control the mosquito population all around GA. It is important to be aware that these are only control measures and cannot eradicate the mosquito’s population completely.
LIGHTHOUSE & SKYWALK Santa Pola City Council has obtained the necessary permissions from the Generalitat Valenciana to go ahead with works to improve the accessibility to the Lighthouse and Skywalk. It is hoped that this work will mean more people can access this popular attraction site located on the coast of Santa Pola Lighthouse.

Book of the month by Beth If you have never read a book by this author you are in for a treat! Best book I have read for ages!!!
My Recommended Book of the Month
John Boyne The Heart’s Invisible Furies
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.
Cyril Avery is not a real Avery – or at least, that is what his adoptive parents tell him. Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple, Cyril is adrift in the world. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from. Over his many years he will struggle to discover an identity, a home, a country and much more. Published in 2017 this is the story of Ireland from the 1940’s to today through the eyes of one ordinary gay man. The Heart’s Invisible Furies is a novel that makes you laugh and makes you cry while reminding us all of the redemptive power of the human spirit. A truly inspiring book and beautifully written.

The Lowedown INTERVIEW
with Lynne
with Damien Martin
Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 5 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. Over the next few months, I will be sharing some interview with GA’s very own Superstars! This month’s interview is with Damien Martin. Damien Martin (born 2 October 1946) is an Irish former hurler who played as a goalkeeper for the Offaly senior hurling team.
Damian won 2 All Irelands Medals. His club was St Rynaghs, which he won a record 13 county championships. Damian also played gaelic football. His retirement came following the conclusion of the 1986 championship. DAMIEN, WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GA? The weather mainly. My family have had a holiday home here for the past 20 years. My father suggested it. We have 3 children who each have 3 children and we all use the place to enjoy family holidays.
Born in Banagher, County Offaly, Martin first arrived on the inter-county scene when he linked up with the Offaly minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. Martin made his senior debut during the 1964–65 National League and later became a regular member of the team. His career spanned 3 decades. Throughout his career, Martin made 37 championship appearances for Offaly. Martin was the first recipient of an All-Star at the inaugural awards in 1971.
WHAT IS HURLING? Hurling is an outdoor team game of ancient Gaelic Irish origin, played by men. One of Ireland's native Gaelic games, it shares a number of features with Gaelic football, such as the field and goals, the number of players and much terminology. The stick that we use is called a ‘hurley’, or a camán in the Irish language, while the ball is called a sliotar. The primary objective is to score by driving the ball through the goals or putting the ball over the bar and thereby scoring a point. By putting the ball into the net, and scoring a goal, the team is awarded 3 points.
The team with the highest score at the end of the match wins. It is over 3,000 years old, and is said to be the world’s fastest field game. It combining skills from lacrosse,
field hockey, and baseball in a hard-hitting, highly paced game. The sliotar can travel up to 180 kilometres per hour over the course of a game! Hurling is also played by ladies and is called "Camogie". WHAT DO YOU ENJOY DOING WHEN YOU VISIT GA? I enjoy organised cycling groups. Six or 7 of us go cycling about 3 times a week. We regularly cycle 40 to 50 kms. I am 75 now
and I enjoy staying fit. We also enjoy organised bus trips to visit different parts of Spain. WHAT DID YOU LOVE ABOUT HURLING? Passion and pride in your jersey. All the villages and towns have club teams that play in the county championship
and representing our parish friends and neighbours helps create the passion and pride in your jersey. The best from the club's within the county are picked to represent the county.
Thank you Damian for your time and for sharing your story with us.

Inland treasures, el Molí de l’Ombria Our region has this year had more rainfall since January than at any time since the 1870s. The effects of this watery bounty are clear to see in the lush greenery of the landscape around us. The local waterways have also sprung to life as they drain water from the highlands and mountains that are such a feature of Alicante province. As such it has been a rare opportunity to see our streams and rivers in full flow. Our local river is the Rio Vinalopo which meets the sea at Santa Pola, on the coast adjacent to the famous salt lakes.
As soon as the weather improved we took the opportunity to visit the upper stretches of the Vinalopo near to where it rises in the Mariola mountains. The river runs through the Town of Villena which just happens to be Juan’s home town, so his parents came along for the adventure to act as our guides! What we discovered was a world of water meadows and verdant valleys tucked away in the heights of our province. The start point of our walk was the village of Banyeres de Mariola in the ‘comarca’ of
Alto Vinalopo, this is the nearest settlement to the source of the Vinalopo; from here the river runs down through Villena, Elda, Aspe, Elche and on to Santa Pola. We followed parts of two walking routes, the Ruta Miradors and the Ruta dels Molins. The second of these routes, as its name suggests, follows the mills that took advantage of the river to power machinery with different purposes across the years, flour, paper etc. The experience was above all one of being immersed in nature. The banks of the river were fringed by lines of beautiful trees giving shade to the riverside path and it was quite extraordinary to see fast flowing water in the river itself. The sound of flowing water and the sparkle of light playing on its surface are always a special joy in southern Spain.
The experience of being near flowing water in a hot and sunny climate is something that has always been especially treasured in our climate. The famous Muslim paradise gardens of Andalucia and the later renaissance gardens of Italy and Spain always included fountains, pools and clever water features such as staircases with
streams running alongside to give the sensual pleasures of moving water in contrast to the still and deep heat of the Mediteranean climate. Nothing however can compare to the thrill of walking alongside a natural river on a sunny day. The mountains that lie just inland from our coast contain many such springs and
watercourses often including spectacular waterfalls and deep natural pools where it is possible to swim; as the summer rolls on we hope to visit some of these and perhaps even brave a little river swimming! The ruta dels Miradors took us up into the thickly forested slopes on the highlands from where we could look down over miles of pine tree covered hills with sprinklings of colourful wild flowers. The beauty provided by these wild flowers is a particular pleasure in the Spanish Spring. Our trip up the course of our local river took us into a magical natural world. However, the beauty of this place was made all the more precious by our knowledge that this little slice of earthly paradise is only temporary and in a few weeks the waters will drop and the colours fade in the arid heat of summer. In our neighbourhood it is spring and not summer whose “lease hath all too short a date”. We invite you to follow our footsteps and try these Rio Vinalopo walking routes whilst our local river is bursting with life thanks to the recent heavy rains, we’re sure that you will find beauty and peace up in the hills where our river is born.

PETS IN SPAIN www.petsinspain.com
Pets In Spain is a website dedicated to the re-homing of abandoned and unwanted animals on the Costa Blanca. Whether you are looking to adopt an animal, advertise an animal or if you simply want to know more about taking care of your pet in Spain, please take a look at our site or Call: 645 469 253 A quiz night in aid of the Pets In Spain animal charity will take place on Tuesday 21st June at the La Estacion gastrobar, Calle Alfredo Kraus 2, Urb La Marina. Quizmaster Mike will be the master of ceremonies for the evening. A free buffet will be provided by La Estacion, prizes and a raffle to raise funds for the charity. Register in advance at La Estacion, 5€ per person. Visit or call the gastrobar on 865 777 255. Kitten season is again upon us, confirmed by the Pets in Spain animal charity, already overloaded with kittens saved from life threatening situations. Eight In just one week. Six where born to a mum that was injured and could not feed her kittens, and the two in this photo where found abandoned in the under build of a house at age just two weeks. They where starving and infested with fleas. A visit to the vet clinic revealed a rare occurrence, with maggots in one eye. Immediate treatment and
wsteroid drops was necessary to eradicate all the maggots and hopefully the eye will recover. All 8 kittens are now thriving on bottle fed kitten milk by the charity’s foster carers. The pandemic has hit animal charities hard with outdoor fund raising events having to be cancelled and long term low customer trade in charity shops.
As a consequence, due to lack of funds, Pets In Spain will close their charity shop in Ave Londres, Urb La Marina on 31st May 2022 and appeal to everyone to please continue to support them and deliver donated items to sell in their other charity shop which will remain open on the lower level of Consum square, Urb La Marina.
GA RUNNING GROUP
THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS During May John ran the Sunderland 10k and has now completed his 50th Park Run which is held at 09:00 every Saturday at numerous destinations across the world (but sadly not in Spain) with John running in England, Scotland, New Zealand and South Africa, whilst Claudia and Brigitte ran the Gaurdamar Medio Maraton (21k) not long after their heroics at braving the cold at the Hanover 42k.
flat. I imagine he had to wear special shoes to get traction on the ice.
Viking Runner Staffan Our Viking runner is Staffan who hails from Sweden where, as his photos confirm, it can get extremely cold, yet it doesn’t deter him from regularly running through some beautiful countryside when he is not in Gran Alacant. He started running 10 years ago when he realised his weight and his waist line were not what they should be and decided to do something about it. Initially he found the running hard and didn’t enjoy it, but realised the faster he ran, the sooner he finished, which is a philosophy he has kept to this day. He has now completed several 21k races, regularly running 10k in training but two races are up there as amazing experiences; The 2015 Berlin marathon (which was won by Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge who, three years later broke the marathon world record in Berlin) and then in March 2019 Staffan was one of 200 runners in the Frozen Lake 21k. This frozen Norwegian lake is normally used to test cars but on this day they ran a course full of twists and turns (see map) which meant he could always see all the other runners. And of course, it was
His best times are 3hrs 37.27 for the marathon, 1hr 38.09 for the half marathon and 42.09 for the 10k which are fantastic times. When he is away on business or holiday he likes to run in a completely new place which is always a good experience and a good opportunity to see the place from a new perspective. In March this year, for reasons he doesn’t know, he started a run streak, i.e. running every day, something he is enjoying to the point he has no end date in sight and at the time of going to print he will have run 85 days consecutively. In between running, he likes to ski, obviously, he is Swedish and he enjoys getting out on his bike and is an avid watcher of the three main grand tours; The Giro, The Tour de France and La Vuelta. And so, after 10 years since he started running how is his weight and waist line? In his own words, “10 years later I am 10kg lighter and a proud member of the Gran Alacant Runners”. And we, Staffan, are proud to run alongside of you. Stop Press: Entries are open from 1st June for next year’s Santa Pola 21k which will be held on Sunday 22 January 2023. The entry fee starts at 18 euro for the first 1000 entries and can be found at www.Chiplevante.com
