Q: Question for Politicians
Thanks Lou for giving a voice to the people who have questions that are not answered by the city council through their web links.
My question concerns the cleanliness of Oceania Avenue. I have noticed that in Oceania Avenue the garbage truck passes but not the sweepers. Can I also ask why there are no recycling units here?
Why is it that in some public places are cleaned on a daily basis and others are not if we are all paying the same taxes?
Kind Regards, David
Borja Merino’s Reply:
I have checked with Cleaning Services and in principle, they pass through Oceania Street both the clearing and the sweepers; they pass through all the streets. However, with the new cleaning contract, the cleaning resources for Gran Alacant are being progressively reinforced, with new associated machinery.
Q: Defibrillators
Do you know if there are any defibrillators publicly available in Gran Alacant?
Thanks, Jason
COUNCILLORS
Borja Merino Councillor of Gran Alacant Tourism, Health & Animal Welfare
Borja Merino's reply:
In Gran Alacant, there are two public defibrillators, one in the municipal building and the other in the sports facility at José Antonio Alemañ.
Q: Accident
Yet another accident just past Nova Beach!!! I wrote to you previously regarding a zebra crossing and a sleeping policeman in this area.
Does it take someone to be seriously injured before something is done? Cars come down and up this hill at tremendous speed; totally ignoring the 30 km signs and that includes the buses. Time for action Oscar!
Kind Regards, David
Oscar Valenzuela's reply:
Yes, we study the situation carefully and more speed bumps will be added in different parts of GA.
Q:
Tourist Train
Hello Lou, is there any news about the tourist train? Will it be running again soon?
Kind Regards, Mark
Borja Merino's reply:
Yes, the tender process has now been closed. If everything goes well the tourist train should be up and running in June.
ASK OUR
GA
Q: DOG POO
I recently read an article in Spain News “Alicante Town declares war on dog poo: Council warns of €3,000 fines after picking up 73 tonnes of mess left by dog owners.” Interestingly, “Despite fines ranging between €100 and €3,000, only a dozen cases have been filed in the last year by the Local Police, as officers need to catch a dog ‘in the act’ with an owner not doing anything about the mess.”
Can you ask our local councillors how many fines have been issued to the lazy, disgusting dog owners in Gran Alacant who refuse to clean up after their pets? I am willing to offer my own services as “The Dog Poo Lady” and will happily issue fines to irresponsible dog owners for a small commission. I think I would be a millionaire inside a year!
Thanks, The Dog Poo Lady
Q: DOG POOP
I am writing to complain that the dog park now has as much poop on the ground as in the streets. I see owners congregating whilst the dogs are happy
Q: Bins on Calle Canarias
The collection of rubbish from the bins next to the new bus stop for Alicante seems to have hit an all-time low, even for this section of bins.
There seems to be an ever-increasing
playing and pooping and no one is picking it up!
Kind Regards, Michele
Q: DOG POO
I have a holiday home in Calle Malta and have recently returned to GA.
I walked to where they are building the latest Masa apartments. The amount of dog poo all over the pavements near the refuse bins was unbelievable!
I had to walk on the road, as there was not one piece of pavement clear. I thought people with dogs would be more civilised and clear this up. The pavements are not dog toilets. Surely, this must be addressed ASAP.
Kind regards, Marie
Oscar Valenzuela's reply:
We have regulations with expensive penalties in place. Now that we have more police presence in GA I hope there will are more fines issued. I am waiting for the police report on fines issued. The police will also be undertaking an awareness campaign very soon.
amount of builder’s material and old furniture just dumped next to the bins. The number and size of the bins is just not sufficient for the shops and restaurants, let alone the residents, and anybody with a car who just seem to rock up. I seriously doubt if the new bins,
when they arrive, will solve this unsightly and potential health hazard problem.
As a side issue, why was the bus route changed without the provision of a new shelter and bus tables, and don’t get me going over the lack of buses on the Santa Pola/Alicante route at this time of the year. Standing up for the journey is not pleasant and surely one bus an hour is not realistic in what is a growing area.
Thanks, Peter
Borja Merino's reply:
The replacement of all the containers in Gran Alacant is imminent, thus improving the service. All this effort must be accompanied by the care and responsibility of all residents. Making Gran Alacant clean and tidy depends on everyone.
The issue of bus service is a matter for the transport service. In summer, the service is usually increased.
Q: GA Circular 15 Bus Service
The afternoon service ceased during Covid and has never been reinstated. I appreciate the operator Vectalia is a private company but surely, it will be subject to a public contract? Can they be asked if there are any plans to reinstate the afternoon service and if so when? Failing that can they at least amend their advertised timetable on all bus stops so visitors to the area and tourists are not standing there waiting for buses that currently do not exist!
Thanks, Pat
Oscar Valenzuela's Reply: we recently had a meeting with Vectalia who is studying how to improve services in GA.
Q: Recycling Bins
Is there anywhere in or near to Gran Alacant where you can take old and unwanted electric/computer cables where they can be reused or recycled? I recently had a clear out and found over 20 cables, wires and chargers I no longer use or need. Technology moves on at such a pace and I am sure most of us have a drawer full of similar things. I do not want to just bin them!
Kind Regards, Michael
GA Advertiser's reply:
There is a recycling facility at Arenales Del Sol on the main promenade opposite to the new social centre. It has many different compartments for recycling unusual items (see photo). We asked Borja, if it was possible to get one of these in GA.
Borja Merino's reply:
There are some shops, such as hardware stores, that have recycling bins for light bulbs and batteries. We are going to discuss this with the waste management company to see if it is possible to install a recycling container for these types of objects.
See the NEWS for more information of the new RECYCLING INITIATIVE.
NEW PRUNING COLLECTION SERVICE
Santa Pola Council launch a new pruning collection service for residents.
The uncontrolled dumping of all kinds of rubbish on public roads continues to be a major problem in Gran Alacant, despite the fact there is a FREE service available for special uplifts. All you have to do is contact Urbaser in advance to arrange a day, time and place.
To try to tackle this complicated problem, the Department of Cleaning have launched a new service for the collection of pruning remains at home and reinforce the existing collection of household items.
The mayor Loreto Serrano, said "it is a free and exclusive service for individuals with the aim of improving the cleanliness of our town, but for this it is necessary to have the commitment of residents. We cannot continue to throw belongings next to the containers or in green areas without notifying Urbaser if we want to give a good image of the area we live in".
Serrano explained, "With the new cleaning contract we provide a complete service because the collection is carried out on Mondays and Saturdays. In high season, it is extended to the afternoons and on Sundays. Soon with the renovation of all the containers in the area will begin, but we won't be able to keep Santa Pola clean without everyone's collaboration."

All you have to do is call us in advance at 966693955 or by WhatsApp at 639537476 and we will inform you what day and time you can deposit the remains tied or bagged in a large garbage bag outside your home."

LAUNCH OF HEALTH COUNCIL
The Councillor of Health, Borja Merino, joined in the launch of the Health Council of Santa Pola as a new strategy of Primary Care.
Its main objective is to orient health care towards the community, promoting selfcare, reducing health inequalities and fostering social relations.
As a fundamental pillar to achieve this, the strategy establishes the creation of a Health Council as a body for citizen participation. In this Council, the population is to be represented through the collaboration of various health agents, such as pharmacies, educational institutions, local associations, neighbourhood associations, Public Health, trade unions, health services and city councils, among others.
This first meeting has provided the opportunity for all those involved to meet and network, with the aim of identifying the real and perceived needs of the population and thus propose concrete solutions through the active participation of all sectors involved.
BINS
The City Council of Santa Pola announces the imminent renewal of waste containers throughout Gran Alacant.
Continuing with the implementation of the renewed cleaning contract, the City Council of Santa Pola announces the distribution schedule of the nearly one thousand containers to be installed in the area. The City Council is appealing to residents for a little more patience
now that we are in the final phase of implementation of a new system that will surely improve the efficiency of cleaning services in the area.

On Saturday the 4th of May, the annual sponsored "Walk for Life" on behalf of Bruised but not Broken cancer care took place along the seafront in El Campello. 34 people and 1 dog set off from the harbour at 9am and walked 5km along the seafront to Muchavista, turning round there to walk 5km back finishing at Bernie's bar, where they received their medals.
2024 marked the 11th year this event has run, or walked, as was the case, missing only 2 years during the covid-19 pandemic. On the day itself, more than €1,640 was raised but we expect that to increase as the sponsor money comes in.
The walk takes place to raise much needed funds for Bruised but not Broken which is a cancer charity founded in 2011 to honour the life and courage of Rebecca Isaacs.
The charity is based in El Campello where our shop can be found in Calle San Bartolome,55. The shop, staffed by friendly and empathetic volunteers, sells a wide variety of items including clothes, furniture, jewellery, books, bric a brac and much more.
If you just want to drop in for a chat or in search of a listening ear, you will find our volunteers happy to help with a cuppa and a smile.
The charity exists to provide financial, practical and emotional support along with nutritional information, to anyone affected by cancer, which nowadays means 1 in 2 of us and prides itself on providing help tailored to the individuals or families needs. Anyone regardless of nationality, colour or creed can approach the charity for help.
We do not give to cancer research as we prefer to give our funds, provided by the generous support of the local people, directly to the people who need it, when they need it.
To find out more information on what we do and the services we provide, or maybe you would like to join us as a volunteer or fundraiser, you can call us on either 965776578, which is the shop number or call Lorraine on 608524896. We can also be found on Facebook. Thank you for taking the time to read about us.

Q: Arenales
Hello Lou,
I was curious about the status of the construction of the camper parking area near the Clot de Galvany / Gran Alacant on the Elche / Gran Alacant border.
I understood that there were permit problems. Do our Councillors have an update on when it is planned to restart?
Thanks, Jack
Alex Garcia Raduan's Reply: Hello Jack.
The construction of a motorhome parking lot was planned on that site, but it had technical problems and now a project for 200 APARTAHOTELs has been presented.
200 APART-HOTELS
Miraclot SL will invest more than 16 million euros to build aparthotels in the large plot in Arenales Del Sol in front of Carabassi beach. Initially this plot was planned for paid car parking, then as a caravanning area.
Elche City Council has approved the construction of a hotel complex on a plot of 15,799 square meters that will house an Apart-Hotel with underground parking, six swimming pools, green areas, leisure and restaurant areas and a large spa. The government team stated, "The aim is to promote tourism and attract more visitors to the area."
After the demolition of the skeleton of the old hotel in Arenales, the Elche district will have a project of this type again several decades later.
ARENALES SOCIAL CENTRE TO OPEN IN SUMMER
Construction of the new facilities is almost complete. The ground floor will be used for medical offices and other municipal public services, while on the first floor there will be meeting rooms, activity rooms and offices for different entities. Elche City Council assures that it is one more way to demonstrate its commitment to the area.

CARABASSI BEACH AWARDED BLUE FLAG
Elche City Council renews the five blue flags on its beaches for another year. The quality labels will continue to fly this year on the beaches of Arenales del Sol, Carabassí, El Altet, La Marina and Les Pesqueres-El Rebollo.
This is one of the quality and environmental certification distinctions awarded every year by the Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) taking into account several criteria including water quality, environmental management, the safety of bathers, the services offered by the beach or the information and environmental education around it.
In this way, the Valencian Community is once again the leader in blue flags throughout the national territory with a total of 159 beaches, 6 more than the previous year. It is followed by Andalusia with 156 blue flags, Galicia with 125 and Catalonia with 118.
CORREOS "RETURNS" TO ARENALES DEL SOL
Correos "returns" to Arenales Del Sol Arenales del Sol will have a new temporary Post Office from 20 May 2024 situated at the prefabricated units
near the outdoor gym on the beach promenade Avda.Bartlome de Tirajana 54.

Book of the month by Beth
An old-fashioned thriller My Recommended Book of the Month
Rogue Male Geoffrey Household
The narrator takes it upon himself to stalk – in the manner of a game hunt – a human prey. A man guarded by the best in the land. A man with a vested interest in keeping himself out of the sights of any assassin.
With the dictator in his sights our hero is apprehended and tortured almost to the point of death. Left to fall from a cliff to an accidental death, he cheats fate by landing in a bog. Here begins his flight to freedom.
But what kind of freedom? Even back in his native England he is hunted down by the agents of the dictator – forced to become an outlaw now wanted for actual murder after he finishes off one of his foreign pursuers in the bowels of the London Underground. Now he has to disappear and hide where no-one can find him.
This adventure thriller has spawned many imitations including the movie The Fugitive.
I was not convinced that I would enjoy this book but was surprised by it. The passages on the hero’s survival skills were fascinating.

BUSINESS INTERVIEW
ABOUT COSTA BLANCA EIENDOM
CBE was founded in 2021 by Anders Langli and Rudi Fremstad, both of whom already had extensive experience in real estate in Costa Blanca. The startup consisted of an office in the centre of Alicante and another office in Halden in Norway. Anders, who has been a permanent resident in Spain for around 15 years, was responsible for the office in Alicante, while Rudi ran the office in Halden. Costa Blanca Eiendom was an immediate success and has experienced explosive growth. Today, Costa Blanca Eiendom has offices in Alicante, Gran Alacant, Halden and Jessheim, and office number 5 will open in Playa Flamenca early this summer.
Costa Blanca Eiendom is a Norwegian-owned company, but has chosen to focus on the whole of Europe as its catchment area. They currently have around 20 fulltime employees, who speak a total of 10 languages Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, English, German, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, French and Spanish.
WHAT DO YOU SPECIALISE IN
We specialise in the sale of properties in Costa Blanca and Costa Calida. We work in the area from Valencia in the north to Almeria in the south. We focus on personalised customer service and close follow-up with our clients. We understand how important it is to be able to communicate in your native language, and we endeavour to have agents with great language skills.
The competition is tough, and there are lots of great agencies out there. We try to stand out, by covering a very big area, and offering our clients viewing trips where we cover the hotel expenses and transport, while we assist the clients 3 or more days driving around looking at properties and areas.
We also provide assistance regarding bank services and the legal process of buying or selling a property in Costa Blanca. We follow the clients from the beginning of the journey to the finalisation and beyond. Not to mention the fact that we obtain a portfolio of over a 1000 properties all over Costa Blanca and Costa Calida.
In addition, we can also help with refurbishments through another company we are closely linked to.
C o s t a B l a n c a E i e n d o m
They offer big or small renovation projects for those who choose to buy a resale and want to make it more personalised to their taste and needs.
To put it in easy terms we provide all the services a buyer or seller could ever need, and if we do not have the services needed we have close connections with many companies and will always strive to find the best solution or service for our client.
WHAT ARE YOUR ROLES
Christoffer is mostly working with our Scandinavian market along with English speaking countries. His role is to help every buyer and seller to get the best service and deal possible. He will also be Office Manager for the new office in Playa Flamenca.
Michel ́s role is focusing mostly on the Dutch, Belgium and German market. He is also in charge of maintaining the website and keeping us up to date with all property portals and news within IT.
Nora is the Office Manager of our GA office. She is making sure everything goes smoothly here as well as focusing on the Scandinavian market. She is also doing social media marketing targeting the Norwegian market.
WHY GRAN ALACANT
As the demand for properties in Gran Alacant was getting higher, we saw the need for being close to where our customers are and want to buy. Gran Alacant is a great area, and has a well-established Norwegian community, which is something our clients appreciate highly. At the same time this is a strategically good location, having the airport nearby and with easy access to both the North and the South of Costa Blanca.
WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE
Michel has seven years of experience within the real estate business in Spain, and before that he was working within IT in the Netherlands.
Christoffer has now been working as a real estate agent in Spain for two years. Before moving to Alicante, he was an Assistant Department Manager within a retail chain in Norway.
Nora was previously a Project Co-ordinator and kitchen designer in Norway.
BEST PART OF THE JOB
The best part about this job is to meet a lot of interesting people and the joy of building relationships and helping our clients find their right home. That is definitely the greatest motivator. Another great aspect of our job is the diversity in our tasks and that every day is different. The market is always moving, with new projects being launched all the time. This means we will always have the opportunity to learn and grow.
CHALLENGING PART OF THE JOB
The most challenging is to find out exactly what a client is looking for, and to make sure they get the best deal possible. Sometimes it might take several days or even several viewing trips to find the right property. Another challenging thing is to find the location of the properties. There can be several different addresses registered at the same location or the direction on the digital map is incorrect. That can lead to unexpected adventures from time to time.

If you spend more than 183 days in Spain throughout the year, including occasional trips away, you're considered a fiscal resident.
Louise and Phillipe made what is normally a nightmare into a very easy experience. We asked them to take care of everything from selling the house to closing bank accounts no hassle did what it said on the tin. Brilliant job! www .ga-homefinders. com
You're also considered a fiscal resident if your main family or most of your activities and economic interests are based in Spain, either directly or indirectly.
Another indicator of fiscal residency is when your spouse or partner (if not legally separated) and your dependent children regularly live in Spain. Who is a fiscal resident
Throughout the entire calendar year, you're classified as either a resident or nonresident, and any change in residency status during the year won't affect your tax status for that period.
Stay tuned for next month's update on how the Spanish Tax Office is involved when a non-resident sells property!

MONTPELLIER: CROSSING BORDERS, MAKING CONNECTIONS
Our home in Gran Alacant lies in what was once the southern part of the lands of the ancient crown of Aragon. Aragon also included the famous County of Barcelona which is said to have lent the kingdom its famous emblem of four red stripes on a gold background. In early mediaeval times the territory of the kings of Aragon stretched north along the Mediterranean coast and over the Pyrenees mountains into what is now France. In March we visited friends in the beautiful French city of Montpellier and were surprised to find a few remaining links between the Spanish and French lands of the Kings of Aragon.
By the way, we took advantage of the fact that it is now possible to travel cheaply by high speed train between the cities of Spain and France. All that was needed was a change of train in Madrid to pick up an express over the border and into the heart of the region of France known as Occitania, famous for troubadours and Cathars!
The ancient city of Montpellier contains the largest preserved mediaeval city in France. It is a maze of winding streets filled with ancient buildings, cafes and restaurants. Most of the buildings have later facades but upon entering one immediately notices the fine stone ribbed vaults forming the ceilings of many of the shops and bars, a clue to their ancient origins.
It is this early mediaeval period that provides the link between Montpellier and our southern Spanish home. In 1208 Montpellier was the birthplace of one of the most important Spanish kings; James the 1st of Aragon, known as “the Conqueror”.
James is the reason why Valencian is spoken as the native language of our area because it was he who conquered the muslim city of Valencia and the lands south along the Spanish mediterranean coast. After some toing and froing between the kings of Aragon and Castile most of our province of Alicante became the southernmost part of the crown of Aragon, speaking the Catalan/ Valencian language. Montpellier also had
direct relevance to this process because the military problems encountered by James' father in his French lands directly led to the Kings of Aragon turning their attention southwards to expand into the muslim territories of southern Spain.
Over a period of little more than 100 years the focus of the Kings of Aragon shifted from Occitania to our neighbourhood. The City of Montpellier eventually became part of the subsidiary Aragonese Kingdom of Majorca until it was finally sold by the King of Majorca to the French crown in 1349 thereby severing the last major sovereign link between the Iberian kings and their French feudal lands. It is tempting to wonder whether the kings of Aragon would have pushed as far south as Alicante if they had not encountered such problems holding onto their power in Southern France. However, the outlines of what would become the countries of France and Spain were being drawn with the Pyrenees as the dividing line. Spanish kings turned their ambitions southwards, thus ending the shared mediaeval trans-pyrenean world that had existed since the time of Charlamagne.
It would be almost 450 years before another famous Spaniard made a significant mark on the city of Montpellier. In the late 1970s the city authorities planned an ambitious urban
renewal project, the architect they employed was the famous Catalan postmodernist architect Ricardo Boffil. We have previously written about his early work in Calpe (March 2021) but his Montpellier project, Antigone, is on a much bigger scale. Using classical architectural language and styles Boffil created one of Europe’s most striking 1980s urban environments, which successfully brought back life to the site of former factories and military installations. The Antigone project covers 36 hectares and took over 10 years to complete, becoming in the process a new signature part of Montpellier to rival the ancient Aragonese mediaeval city centre once ruled by the same kings who had ruled Boffil’s home city of Barcelona. Ricardo Boffil’s central philosophy was that the civilisation of the Mediterranean consisted of cultural links between the different peoples and civilizations that ringed the sea. The monumental deconstructed classicism of his Montpellier project confronts the visitor with questions about style, meaning, provenance and appropriation; it is a perfect postmodern storm and we loved it!
A visit to Montpellier challenges the history we think we know about the identity of our countries and even the style of our own architecture. We recommend everyone to hop on a train and go explore the former lands of the Kings of Aragon!

PETS AND MURDERERS
Don’t panic! We are not writing about animals killers, but killers the only thing they loved was their pets.
We frequently say it’s impossible for an animal abuser to be a good person. We are completely sure about it. If you are a good people, you are supposed to feel extremely disgusted about other people (or animals) suffering, and of course, you are also supposed to never produce, or approve, that suffering. Of course we don’t mean shy or non friendly people. You can be shy or non friendly but still a good person.
But, what about people who adore their pets? Are all of them good people? Our opinion is NOT all of them are. During these two decades of non-stop working, we have seen people who treated very well their dogs and cats, but they were really tyrannical with their couples and children. People who mistreat and insult other people, but love their pets and would do whatever is necessary for them.
We have read recently in the papers an article about Spanish murderers who, after kidnapping, killing and quartering their victims, were not showing any kind
Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793
English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
of contrition nor any kind of feelings. They were cold, with no empathy for the victim and completely careless about their own future. But, surprisingly, they were extremely worried about their pets.
In one of this cases, a woman that committed a crime with the help of her boyfriend, only showed signs of sympathy during crime reconstruction when one of her sugar gliders which lived in a cage at the house where the crime was committed got a leg trapped at the cage bars and started crying. This worry about her pets was the only sign of sincere emotion the woman showed.
In other interesting case was the love the killer felt for her Siberian Huskys the only thing that made her confess the place where she buried the 33 pieces she split the corpse of her victim. The forensics told the woman if she didn’t confess where had she buried the corpse, they would have to put her Huskies to sleep in order to search the remaining of the victim at the dogs stomach and intestine. Obviously, this was just a lie for making her confess, but it was the only way the Police had, and the murdered confessed immediately.
There is the case of a man to knocked down a neighbour with his car. During the crime, the killer’s dog was sitting at the car beside his owner. In other cases, the dog “solved” the crime: a small dog whose owner was killed, managed to bite the murderer, so the forensics were able to find his DNA at the dog’s mouth. So, as you can see, pets join us whatever we do, even if we commit a crime or we are the victims of a crime.

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP
A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have their own Elche CF supporters club to attend home games at the stadium and watch away games in local bars.
Home games see the group move around different bars in GA, with the usual bars used being Happy’s at the GA Centre while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill. The group, primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to GA afterwards.
Tickets can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there
is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well. Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the date and time of matches to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand.
A late stutter to the season means that Elche enter the final games not knowing if a play-off position has been achieved, with the month starting with the final game of the regular season away to Leganés. Any play-off participation would be in June.
Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’ ¡Mucho Elche!

Quiz Quiz
Hi, my name is Geoff and I have been asked by Lou to challenge you every month with a few teasers. I hope you enjoy them.
I first came to GA in 2001 and bought my house in 2002 where I have been a regular visitor ever since. You will see me at the quizzes, or out and about, running or cycling. If you see me come and say hi, or, just give me a cheery hello. I am also a big lover of live music and try to see as many live acts as I can.
