Hi everybody,

We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month

This year Holy Week takes place in March so form 9th which is Palm Sunday to 16th you will be able to attend to all parades that will take place in Santa Pola or in the surrounding towns. The most beautiful Palm Sunday procession is the one held in Elche. In fact is declared of International Tourism Interest. If you can’t come to see every procession that is held in Santa Pola then I recommend you come and enjoy the biggest that takes place on Friday the 14th. A Medieval Market will be held from 13th to 16th in the Fortress-Castle. Moors and Christians parades in March 2017 in Villafranqueza (north Alicante) will be held on the 18th and 19th. In Valencia one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “Las Fallas” takes place. The programme is too long but there are parades on main days from 15th to the 19th, with floral offerings. This event is very emotive, spectacular fireworks festival, dancing and music everywhere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes”(powerful firecrackers). If you do not feel like going to Valencia you can also enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego This is all this month. Bye Bye friends. Hello Everyone, Wow! What a fab February that was! There was action all over Gran Alacant - just look at the photos we captured last month. Jimmy Mac was a huge hit at Shooters once again, the Jam sessions at Brothers followed suit and then there was George and Billies leaving do at Big Als, also Caitlins have now taken over at what was formerly Bar 1 with DJ Simon on Friday nights. There surely can’t be many places like this - always somewhere to go and someone to see ! I have a feeling its going to be a mad March as you know it’s St Patrick’s day so make sure you are out there because I will be out and about to snap you having a great time!!! Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog has hidden herself away in the magazine, can you find her? Last month she was on page 26

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Wild Cats I am writing to you with the hope, that the Town Hall will try to solve the, in my opinion, increasing problem with wild cats in Gran Alacant. I live in Altomar 2, and the wild cats here are beginning to be a severe problem with uncontrolled numbers of kittens. The cats are urinating and leaving faeces everywhere. Is there a program for sterilization for example? Best regards, Frank Town Hall Answer: First of all, the Town Hall is aware of this problem, and we are working on a solution which can solve this hot issue, by collaborating with the local animal associations. However, this problem could be caused by people who feed them, so we ask for your help by not feeding the wild cats.

FOLLOW UPS:

As you can see each month it is sometimes difficult to answer a particular question immediately as they have to be transferred to the relevant department. Due to the coalition of 5 party’s in place at Santa Pola Town Hall, some questions are taking a longer time to investigate. We will keep all of your questions on file and keep asking them until we get an answer. Q: Phone Signal Hello Lou & Ged, Hope that Christmas and New Year’s celebrations have been to your satisfaction. The weeks are really running fast and today I was remembering the last contact we had last year about the subject above. You told

6

us to wait until the beginning of 2017 to get in contact with you again. Very shortly, it has not been any improvement so far, so of course we are facings this very serious mobile problem every day!! Relatives and friends, who has been visiting us the past weeks, are very surprised that it still is not any improvement. We hope that you once again will put this problem on your list, when you will have the next meeting with the Town Hall. Comments will be appreciated!! Best regards, Nils-Ove Sjöström and Helge Wikström Town Hall Answer: Sadly, there have been no new improvements about this issue. However, I am sending again this complaint to the municipal infrastructure department, so as they will make some improvements related to the phone signal in Gran Alacant. Q: Gran Alacant needs new one way traffic system!!!! (follow up from November) Waiting for Alicante buses outside Consum in Gran Alacant, we see so many accidents at this roundabout as cars turning right into the smaller road having come up from the N332 have only narrow width to turn. Please ask the council to consider making a one-way system at junction of roundabout at Avda de Noruega & Avda del Mediterraneo. No right turn on

roundabout other than back down to join N332. Much safer to have new one-way system so cars can only go straight across to go round into new one-way road, past Mercadonna bus stop and large car park by Avda Finlandia. Road round to Lidl all part of one-way system back to main roundabout. Estate bus has now changed its route and goes in circular route only via Avda del Mediterraneo along Avda del Carabassi and up Avda de Noruega. Oh and please please allow estate bus to stop in empty taxi rank as our ice-creams melt by time we walk back to Mercadonna bus stop! Thank you, Ann Paterson Town Hall Answer: The previous traffic technician has retired last December and the current one is in charge of catching up on all the pending issues, in order to get down to work. As soon as the new technician gives me some news, we'll let you know. Q: Gran Alacant New Sign (follow up for November) This picture shows how awful the Gran Alacant sign, on the approach to the urbanisation, has deteriorated recently. Please can we have a new one!

yes SIXTY benches, when, as you know, we have been trying to get ONE seat along the hill from the fountain roundabout. The Town Hall told us that it is too difficult to site due to steepness of the hill. Is there a local builder who could give us a quote for doing the job? We could then give this to the Town Hall.

Mercadona: For those of you not living full time out here and only coming out occasionally to your holiday home, you will notice big improvements at the Mercadona supermarket when you are next here. The pictures show how the builders took over the car parking and are revamping the store inside and out.

Town Hall Answer: The Tourism Department has studied your proposal and, when the municipal budget for the 2017 is approved, the Town Hall will be pleased to solve this aesthetic issue once and for all.

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: Frank from Eurocars: Did you see Frank from Eurocars (one of our regular advertisers) showing his car selling business on channel 5 during February. Many Gran ALACANT people buy their cars from Frank. Benches: A picture showing the wonderful new seating area in Santa Pola, just up from the market and football ground. The four star hotel was to be a wonderful addition to the area and were to make the spar and indoor pool available all year round to non hoteliers. How these people can live with themselves as poisoning causes the most horrendous of deaths and is totally cruel. Also these people are not only targeting feral cats but peoples pets.....how do they distinguish between which is which ? and they cause a lot of heartache for the owners. Perhaps they would like to reimburse them for the cost of getting their animals sterilized and the vaccinations that they require ?

DO FERAL CATS DESERVE TO BE POISONED?! Hi, I would be grateful if you could print this in the next issue of your magazine please. There has been some evidence of someone in Gran Alacant, around the Brisamar/Life Resort poisoning cats. I can understand the mating call of the cats can be extremely irritating but it that is part of nature and only lasts through spring . It is certainly no more annoying than the continuous barking of the poor dogs that are left alone all day in all temperatures, whilst their owners go to work. Are they going to poison all of them too ? It is not the fault of the cat that it is born feral. I am sure it would love to be a house cat all nice and warm indoors but life is unfair and they have the right to live on the land.

We have looked after several feral cats for a few years now, sometimes at the annoyance of our neighbours, but we found 4 kittens in our garden and decided we would get them sterilized and they continued to live in our garden. Most of the day they were nowhere to be seen, only returning for their food. Over the past couple of weeks since hearing about these people and what they are doing, two of our cats have disappeared so we can only assume they have got caught up with these nasty, evil people. We are heartbroken. Please keep your eyes out for anyone seeming to be putting food down, especially around the bend by Brisamar where the big gate is and if you have your mobile phone on you, take a picture and shame them. Many thanks. Sue Allen

Europa. Gracias Jan. PLAZA MAYOR CANADIAN DESIGNER DONATES 20 PIECES TO HELP LOOKING GOOD BOUTIQUE RAISE MONEY FOR RESCUED HORSES Joe Belloc, Spain's sales director for Joseph Ribkoff, has even accompanied Louise to the rescue centre to personally see firsthand the work they do in rescuing and caring for numerous horses and donkeys. After seeing their daily struggles he felt compelled to help.

"Sometimes, during what appears to be an otherwise perfectly normal day, something happens that touches your heart, some seemingly innocent encounter or conversation takes place and it quietly changes everything.” These are words of Looking Good Boutique owner Louise Brandley, speaking of the day in September 2008 that she met Sue Weeding at the Easy Horse Care equestrian shop near Rojales. The pair were speaking flippantly about Sue establishing a horse rescue centre – little knowing the conversation would be the beginning of a complete life change for Sue and her husband Rod, who later formed the Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre (EHCRC). Louise said she will never forget that day and has remained committed to helping EHCRC as much as she can, even roping in international designer Joseph Ribkoff to support them. Looking Good's most popular designer brand has continually supported events hosted by the boutique over the years to help support the charity and this year has gone one step further. The Canadian designer has donated 20 garments for the store to sell, with all the proceeds going to EHCRC. They have all been priced at €149, even though some retail at €300, giving customers the chance to grab a real bargain while helping a worthwhile cause.

22

“It is amazing for an international company to bother about a local charity,” said Louise, who will get the chance to personally thank Mr Ribkoff himself in June as she travels to Montreal in Canada to help celebrate the 60th anniversary of the clothing empire. Joseph Ribkoff was one of the original designers to grace the windows of Looking Good in La Zenia when it first opened 15 years ago and the love affair has continued ever since. Louise said she and her many customers love his designs for women of all age and size. Louise uses her years of experience knowing her customers to personally select the new season lines from Joseph Ribkoff and as the boutique continues to be the designer's biggest presence in Spain, they regularly receive test pieces to see how customers respond to them. The collaboration between Joseph Ribkoff and Looking Good will continue for many years to come, but this popular boutique in La Zenia also hosts a range of other brands, specialising in cruise and special occasion wear. They are also pleased to welcome their new lingerie section with professional bra fitting service. With an unrivalled reputation for service, quality and excellence, make Looking Good Boutique your number one destination for beautiful clothes and accessories. Look out for the monthly fashion shows being held at Looking Good Boutique throughout 2017 with the next one taking place on March 18 at midday.

WINTER

Is winter finally at an end? Well, lets hope so! One of the reason’s any of us decide to move to foreign shores, has a lot to do with the weather. Coming from the United Kingdom, I have been used to the harshest of conditions as well as the best of summers, whilst living on the South coast of England. Here the temperatures rarely fall too low; I enjoyed the frosty mornings, brisk walk to work and at least had the luxury of a well heated, double glazed and insulated home. It is a pastime of us Brits to moan about the climate; it’s one of those things we do well. During the last few months of winter, all of us, who live in Gran Alacant, had a lot to moan about. It was a little bit more British than usual, as those residents who had stayed here and not returned home, expressed with great eloquence, their aversion to the inclement weather, hitting the Costa Blanca.

along the coast. Benidorm and Torrevieja came off worse, with huge areas of these cities under water, as local services failed to protect homes and businesses. Gran Alacant, did experience its own problems. This was the first time in my life, that I had seen water coming into my house. Windows and doors were leaking, rooms felt damp to the touch and I was forever cleaning mould from the walls. I had never had to do that in Britain and I don’t mind telling you, it was getting me down. I wasn’t the only person dealing with such niggling issues, many of those I live along side, were also cleaning up the mess left behind from bad weather. Everyone commented, they had never known such bad conditions, in all the years they had lived in this area of Spain.

This is my first year, living in Gran Alacant. I had no idea what to expect, weather wise, when I moved here. I had the usual stereotypical view, of plenty of sun, high temperatures, sat on my balcony, drinking a chilled glass of wine. Of course, like Britain, Spain does have seasons and having arrived in January 2016, I had at least experienced a little chill in the air, nothing I couldn’t cope with and quite happy to endure.

My house faces north, overlooking a ravine. The full onslaught of wind and rain would hit the front of my home, causing water ingress. The houses here are just not built for difficult winter conditions and as a result it can become difficult to tolerate. Standard, homes, in Gran Alacant do not have central heating. With marble floors and single glazed windows, the cold can feel extremely exaggerated. For a few days, while the worst of the rain came down, I was laying towels in front of doors and under windows, to try and stop the worst of the rain from entering the house. With poor ventilation, dampness was also something to be aware of. This wasn’t the Spain I had bargained for, but I am glad it happened during my first year living in Gran Alacant.

This winter, was a little bit different from the norm, as many of my neighbours told me. First we had the floods. Spain itself experiences on average, 320 days of sunshine a year. Just before Christmas, the Costa Blanca was hit with torrential rain, all

In January, down came the snow; Spain does of course experience snow on the mountains, that you can quite clearly see from my house; nothing harsh, just a little inconvenient. Beaches, once again the length and breadth of the Costa Blanca

were covered in snow. The last time it snowed here was in 1982 and it had been a hundred years since the coverage had been this bad. The scenery was beautiful and to my absolute surprise, the Spanish coped remarkably well, going about their daily business, as if nothing was happening. Back home in the UK, the slightest bit of bad weather tends to cause major problems. Schools were closed in some areas, transport was slower, but the reality is, Spain got through it. Like Britain, at this this time of year, the electricity companies were trying to capitalise on the worsening weather. I had just received my bill from iberdrola, it was 110€ for a four week period, which did seem to be at the higher end of normal, for what one would expect to pay, during a typical winter month. A friend informed me, electricity prices in Spain are among the highest in the World and the third most expensive in Europe. I was interested to know why this is the case. One would think, that with all the good weather, during the summer months, home renewable energy would be the answer to high electricity costs in Spain. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact Spain is one of the only countries in the World to tax this form of generation. Spain has a huge electricity deficit; in the past the true cost of electricity were never passed on to the customers, so companies have been trying to recoup their loss; the loss factor actually makes up around eight percent of a typical Spaniards bill. From my research, it does seem that Spain was also exporting a lot of electricity to France, as many of its northern neighbours nuclear power stations remained inactive; this did push up the cost of domestic fuel quite considerably.

As winter reached its peak, a friend from my urbanization sent me an email, detailing a new price rise of 33% on electricity and a smaller percentage increase for butane gas, used my many residents to keep their homes warm. What a huge kick in the teeth, during one of Spain’s worst winters in recorded history. Fuel poverty, is a real issue in Spain, and something the Government needs to address, which is unlikely to happen soon. Spain is governed by a coalition, which are primarily concerned about their own self interest and nothing seems to get done. The bad weather in Spain had an amusing consequence in the United Kingdom, with many supermarkets and shops, running out of the good old British staple, the courgette. Prices, not only of this small green vegetable, but many others, rocketed in cost, due to the ongoing bad weather, throughout Spain, which does supply a large proportion of Britain’s winter vegetables #FirstWorldProblems. I couldn’t help but chuckle to myself, laying under my electric blanket, in my cold house, being battered by wind and rain, listening to the news report, on the BBC. Middle class Mothers, up and down the suburbs, in the home counties of England panicking at the two pound a pound cost, for the green courgette, they can’t clearly do without. What a winter it has been; snow, wind rain, hail stones, floods, leaky doors and windows; we have experienced the lot, over the last few months. Someone once told me, that you need to live in Spain a full year, to really know if you want to stay. That is one statement I wholeheartedly agree with. Despite or maybe because of the dreadful season, Gran Alacant, continues to feel more like home everyday!

WHAT IS PILATES? In this issue of the magazine I would like to tell you a little bit about Pilates. Really, we could spend hours talking about it, but I´m going to try to highlight the key concepts and benefits of the method. The Pilates method of body toning is an exercise system that focuses on posture, breathing and a carefully intertwined development of strength and muscular flexibility, combining the training of both mind and body. The primary goal of the Pilates method is to provide people with a deep understanding and awareness of their own body. The Pilates method is a complete body education where the body works as a whole, from the deepest to the most superficial musculature. There are six Principles of the Pilates Method, all which are interrelated and integrated in each exercise: Concentration: This is the key to connecting the mind and body. To work the body you have to be prepared mentally, since it is the mind that puts the body into action! "Always keep your mind fully focused on the purpose of the exercises while you perform them" Joseph Pilates Control: Pilates designed his method around the idea of muscle control, without sudden or irregular movements. Each movement is done with control from the central core of the body. These slow and controlled movements are more demanding but also more effective. "Good posture can only be acquired when the whole body is under perfect control." Joseph Pilates. Centre: Pilates defined this as the ¨”Powerhouse” of the body, with all the energy needed to perform exercise being generated from the central core and then flowing to the limbs. "The centre of your body is your Powerhouse. All movements must originate from the centre." Joseph Pilates Fluidity: In Pilates there are no static or isolated movements. Sudden, fast movements are avoided and flexibility is much more important than speed.

"The exercises are designed to give you flexibility, skill and grace in the movements" Joseph Pilates Precision: Each movement has a purpose so it is important to focus on making each one precise and perfect rather than rush and do them without any control. "Getting the benefit from the exercises depends on them being performed with the utmost precision" Joseph Pilates Breathing: The bloodstream is cleansed through oxygenation and oxygen is renewed by inhaling and exhaling deeply. Pilates exercises use an active and continuous way of breathing, which takes a little practice to control. "Breathing is the first act of life. We ourselves depend on it. You must learn the art of breathing correctly." Joseph Pilates. By doing Pilates correctly, there are many benefits: • It improves posture, which can relieve back pain that so many people suffer from these days. • We become more flexible and agile, with improved balance and coordination. • It achieves a good muscular tone, strengthening and toning the body without increasing bulk. • By activating the "central core" the natural belt formed by abdominal and back muscle is reinforced, aiding the posture of the spine and strengthening the pelvic floor. It is extremely important that Pilates is practised under the supervision of a professional, because doing the exercises incorrectly or not understanding the principles could lead to problems. …I know that there are people who try to do it at home using videos on the internet without any type of supervision but this is really inadvisable as they can’t be sure whether they are doing the exercises correctly or not and whether they are suitable for their individual fitness needs and/or health problems. It has been a pleasure letting you know a little bit about Pilates as it is something I am passionate about and we could spend a lot more time talking about it! Next time we will take a look at some other aspects of this wonderful exercise method. Gabriela Auzoberria Calvo, Pilates Teacher

KITCHEN TRENDS 2017

TENDENCIAS COCINAS 2017 In the last few years the concept of home cooking has changed radically. The idea of a kitchen enclosed between four walls and isolated from the rest of the house no longer works. Now the concept of open plan living kitchen means having a space that goes beyond the mere function of cooking. COLOURS The wood (in all its shades) will remain in trend during the 2017, combined or not with other materials. The wood fuses with shelves, showcases, coatings ... creating a warm, sophisticated look full of comfort. FURNITURE Fully integrated storage furniture. This furniture shows its beauty with simplicity and design on the outside and with the functionality and practicality inside. An interior with quality fittings that facilitate storage. ILLUMINATION The designs are made with the aim of making the most of natural light. The application of decorative light will serve to give greater sense of spaciousness and space. WALLS AND FLOORS The main protagonists for this year will be the wood, concrete and stone claddings. As for the tiles, they will be protagonists in small kitchens to give them the touch of colour with tiles of patterns or prints. As for the floor, the main materials will be wood and tiles.

OUR PROJECTS PROJECT OF REMODELING AND MODERNIZATION OF KITCHEN IN A FAMILY HOUSE When Beatriz got in touch with us she was very clear what was the most important thing that her new kitchen should have. She wanted a kitchen which would be more integrated with the rest of the house to end this isolated area between four walls. And that was the first thing we considered, to carry out a project based on the "open concept", removing the partition and opening the kitchen to the living room. We were working to a limited budget but we met expectations by creating a modern and functional kitchen with white furniture in contrast with the silestone countertop and the wall tiles. We managed to fit within Beatriz’s budget and her new kitchen as she told us "has changed her life”. “We are very happy and now we just want you to enjoy it a lot”. If you think your kitchen needs an urgent modernization, do not hesitate to visit our showroom in the Gran Alacant Commercial Centre. The kitchen of your dreams can be a reality. We are awaiting your visit.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Alicante’s Hidden Secrets Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 8 years now. My 7 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home.

When you get about halfway along the Esplanada, go into the main street towards the shops and take the 2nd left, this will take you past a plaza and if you keep walking along you will find Calle de San Francesco or “Mushroom Street” as it is fondly known. This mainly pedestrianised street has a brightly coloured floor and dotted along it are colourful mushrooms of various shapes and sizes. Some of them are tall and thin and others are short and wide. Some you can climb on, some you can go inside. There are also grasshopper slides and all of the mushrooms have insects on top of them. It´s great fun for young and old. If you go to the castle end of the Esplanada and head away from the harbour, you will find another Plaza with water jets for kids to cool off and the Town Hall with it´s stunning architecture.

I´m sure that many of you have taken trips to Alicante to walk the Esplanada and browse the stalls or admire the large yachts in the harbour but have you ever strayed off the beaten track? We have often wandered into some of the back streets and have unexpectedly found some interesting places, plazas and buildings with amazing architecture.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Venture further into the windy narrow streets and you will come across plenty of other old buildings like the San Nicolรกs de Bari Cathedral. Just keep walking around and you are bound to find an unusual

mural or an old building full of historic architecture. If you like boutique shops then there are plenty of them here, selling a whole variety of products.

With plenty of tapas bars, home-made ice cream shops, restaurants, coffee shops and bars, you are spoilt for choice and never without a place to sit, relax and soak up the atmosphere. So go and explore the wonderful little streets of Alicante, make sure you wear comfy shoes and have your camera ready for the little hidden gems that this beautiful City has to offer. DENTAL FLOSS

There has been some publicity in the press recently about the usefulness of using dental floss as part of your oral hygiene regime, so I thought I should give my advice on the matter. Dental floss helps to prevent gum disease by getting rid of pieces of food and plaque from between your teeth. Plaque is a sticky substance made of bacteria. If it builds up, the bacteria can irritate the gums and cause inflammation. Using dental floss is fiddly and can be difficult to do properly but it is important to realise that a toothbrush can only reach certain area of the tooth surface. Dental plaque (the sticky substance that contains bacteria which cause most dental problems) builds up on teeth surfaces very quickly. Some areas like the biting surface and faces of the teeth are partially “self- cleansing as the tongue and cheek brushing against them keep them clean. Other areas, in particular the vulnerable site at the join of tooth and gum, need to be kept clean by regular tooth brushing. However it the surfaces inbetween the teeth, that are often impossible to reach with a brush, where dental floss can help. These inter-dental spaces are vulnerable to decay as bacteria in the plaque convert

sugar in food into acid which sits on the tooth surface damaging the enamel. As we get older it is periodontal (gum) disease that becomes more of a problem. Bacteria in plaque near the gums cause inflammation which leads to bleeding, gum recession and loss of supporting bone. The inter-dental areas are particularly vulnerable as food and plaque builds up in these areas very quickly. Dental floss has been shown to be a very good way to remove inter-dental plaque if done properly. This should involve a gentle sawing action being careful not to force the plaque further up into the gums. Many people find flossing difficult to do but there are alternatives. A water pick is a small power jet that blasts water into the inter-dental areas. It is very effective but can be rather messy! Inter-dental brushes are less fiddly to use than floss although may not be able to get into the smallest gaps. Antiseptic mouthwashes attack the bacteria directly, so while they do not remove inter-dental plaque they help keep the gums healthy. Your dentist should be able to advise which oral hygiene products are most suitable for you to help maintain a healthy mouth.

TA TA TOXINS Time for a little spring clean and I’m not just talking about giving the house a good deep clean. I’m talking about your our bodies. Detoxing the body is highly important, it’s a process of eliminating toxic substances from the body with either temporary or permanent changes of lifestyle and diet, toxins are substances such as heavy metals, chemicals, pollutants, artificial food ingredients and pesticides these all can cause harm to our health, they build up over months and years most of the time without us even knowing it. Unfortunately toxins are everywhere they are in the water we drink, food we eat and air that we breathe, in a nutshell we live in a toxic environment but please don’t despair there are plenty of things we can help us cleanse our bodies.

Here are a few signs that your body might need a detox: • Brain fog • Depression • Insomnia

• Body odor • Cravings • Low libido

• Fatigue • Constipation • Bloating

If you do suffer from any of the above you may want to think about taking some time to do a detox, there’s numerous ways to reduce and eliminate toxins that can be done easily just by following these steps,

Eating the right foods • Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, whole grains and legumes • Choosing organic if possible • Drinking plenty of filtered water and homemade fresh juices • Avoid processed food (particularly white flour and sugar) and fried foods

• Cut out meat and dairy • Cut out foods containing preservatives • Avoid empty calories such as sugary loaded fizzy drinks and alcohol • No smoking

Here is a list of naturally detoxifying foods and herbs: • Water • Ginger • Green tea • Apples • Carrots • pineapple • Grapefruit

82

• Coconut oil • Artichokes • Garlic • Turmeric • Lemons • Limes • Broccoli

• Basil • Coriander • Beets • Flaxseed • Avocado • Collard greens (kale, chard)

Peas & Love with Rachael Tuttle CARABASSI CENTRE

Clean air

Indoor air quality is roughly 5x more polluted then outside so purifying the air inside your home is highly important but is something most of us don’t think about, poor air quality is the leading cause of respiratory infections, asthma, allergies and rashes

Stress less

To improve this we can do a number of things such as: • Open windows and airing out the house • Burn essential oils and soy candles. • Stop using commercial chemical products and air fresheners • Switch too natural products which are better for you and your family plus the environment • Have air purifying plants dotted over the house preferable in each room, bamboo plant, snake plant, peace lily and spider plant are just a few good examples • Himalayan salt lamps are also great at cleansing the air.

Modern day lifestyle can be very overwhelming and stressful at times causing havoc not only on our emotional state but physically as well. Stress can be toxic to your health so keeping stress levels to a low is well advised. • Try meditation • Breathing exercises • Exercise is another great way to relieve stress (especially Yoga and Pilates) • Burning essential oils like lavender, rosemary or wild orange • Try drinking herbal teas such as mint or chamomile • Soaking in a hot bath Living here in Spain it’s not very often I opt for a bath over a shower but there are heaps of benefits from soaking in a bath containing a handful of Epsom salts, 5/10 drops of your favourite essential oils (lavender to relax the body is a personal favourite of mine) and half a cup of baking soda, this is a brilliant combo to draw out toxins and heavy metals, lower stress levels, regulate hormones, balance your ph level, improve sleep and relieve sore muscles. Soak for 20/40 minutes and after slowly stand up with care since you may feel lightheaded or drained rinse yourself with cold water. You should make sure to drink plenty of water and do not eat immediately after. Peas & Love with Rachael Tuttle

one car to break even. While Channel 5 filmed, Frank enjoyed his equal most successful seven days, since moving to Alicante, selling eight cars and the most expensive vehicle on the lot to a group of Norwegians, living in the Alicante area.

FRANK ROSCOE - FWR €URO CARS! On Thursday I settled down to watch BargainLoving Brits In The Sun; a series on Channel 5, showing the adventures of various Expats, who have left Britain for a new life on The Costa Blanca. I am a fan of the show myself; in some respects I can see a lot of me in those, who chose to leave Britain behind; we probably all can to an extent. This week we saw one of our own, featured on the show, Frank Roscoe, who is the owner of FWR-€uro Cars. Frank (57) moved to Alicante, from Reigate, Surrey, thirteen years ago, moving his two daughters out of school to start a car sales business next to Alicante Airport. After a tough few years, experienced car salesman Frank, could finally begin to relax, a little, as his Car Sales moved towards the success, he enjoys today. Frank’s business is family run, offering those who live here a very unique service. The process of buying a car, can be complicated in Spain, with a huge amount of paperwork involved, almost as much as buying a house. As part of his car sales package, Frank does all the necessary documentation for you, including insurance, which is a godsend, especially to those who have just moved here. Customers return to Frank, time after time, year on year, for the peace of mind, knowing that all of the legalities, required under Spanish law are complete and correct Channel 5, followed Frank during a typical working week, when he needs to sell at least

I was struck by the testimonials of those buying and selling cars with Frank. One of the reasons he is successful, is due to his approachability and most importantly, the trust and faith those who live here put in him as a person. I know myself, from when I first moved to Gran Alacant and was in need of a car, the unrivalled levels of recommendation, offered by those in the Expat community. If you offer the high standards, customers require, you can succeed in your endeavours, as Frank has; he is a benchmark for others to follow! Frank is a great ambassador for all the local community, who live in the Alicante area. FWR - €uro Cars is a successful business, offering an exceptional level of service; that is appreciated, by all those who reside here. One of the most enduring aspects of being part of the ‘Expat Club’, is the way, others who understand the issues you face, whilst living abroad, go out of their way to help make life, a little more comfortable. Frank epitomises that genuine spirit of camaraderie and cooperation! Luke Martin Jones

ARE STRAY CATS BEING POISONED? happen in about 2 months, when the females that have been in season in December and January give birth to their kitten. Spring is the moment when kittens will leave their nests for learning to find food for themselves. Finally, in summer, when kitten become young adults, they separate from their brothers and sisters and they start a totally independent life.

These last days we have heard some GA residents are worried about the increasing number of stray cats at the area, and about the high rate of mortality, which is supposed to be caused by poisoning. It is practically impossible to know the exact number of cats without an owner, which are living in GA. Normally; the number of individuals of this kind of animal groups is quite constant during the year, which means the number of births equals more or less the number of deaths. The subjective perception of a suddenly increased number of individuals from December to March happens because that is the moment of the feline reproductive season. Females are in season, so they spend the whole night meowing, and sooner or later several “tom cats meetings” appear around them. Fights at night become very common. For all those reasons feline presence gets much more evident despite the real number of cats is the same. In summer, the situation is usually the opposite: cats spend most of the day hiding from extreme temperatures, and, since human population at GA is 2 or 3 times bigger in summer, cats avoid humans. The real peak of feline population will

Santa Pola Town Hall is trying to regulate the number of stray cats. For example: only authorized people (those who have obtained a special license from the Town Hall) are allowed to feed street cats. Feeding cats without having this special license is strictly forbidden. Of course, using poisoned baits is illegal, but unfortunately we have confirmed at our practice they are used sometimes at GA, especially near the game preserve. Most people who see a dead animal at the street or at the country think it has been poisoned, and, as a matter of fact, poisoning and heart attack is the first thing to suspect when a sudden death happens. Possibly, if we find several dead animals at the same area, poisoning could be a real possibility, but the absence of wounds or blood in a corpse is not enough to suspect a poisoning. What do we have to do if we find a dead animal and we think it could be a poisoning? We can tell Local Police or Seprona (the environmental division of Guardia Civil). Taking pictures can be very useful, but if we have to touch the corpse, we must protect our hands, just in case. Some poisons are so powerful that the poisoned animal dies in a matter of minutes, and the quantity of toxic substance that is in its body, is enough to be dangerous for other animals or even people who come close and touch it.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

WILLOW WARBLER

March is the month when British birdwatchers start to look out for the first of the summer arrivals – but here in Gran Alacant, the spring migration is well under way, and many species have already arrived. Some of these will just be passing through on their way northwards, and the Costa Blanca is a good place to see this movement. If you asked anyone with an interest in birds to name the most common British summer migrant, they would probably suggest the Barn Swallow but they would be wrong, it is in fact the Willow Warbler; an astonishing 2 ½ million pairs breed in Britain – in Scandinavia the number rises to a mind-boggling 24 million pairs – and many of these birds pass through our area on their way northwards throughout the month of March. They don't stay to breed in Spain, apart from a very few which nest in and around the Pyrenees. So what should you be looking out for? As you can see from my photo, it is a fairly undistinguished small bird, and there is a big problem in identifying it. As you may know if you are a regular reader of my monthly musings, there is another little greenish-yellow bird which spends the winter here called the Chiffchaff, and there are millions of them! The Willow Warbler doesn't spend winter here, it goes all the way to sub-Saharan Africa for the winter,

98 98

but during March the last wintering Chiffchaffs get mixed up with the passing Willow Warblers and the stage is set for some serious head-scratching because they look very similar. Some of you may have heard of the famous 18th century naturalist the Rev Gilbert White, who wrote “The Natural History of Selbourne” - one of the first great ecological books, and the fourth most-read book ever published. He realised that a bird known as the “WillowWren” at that time was actually three species identifiable only by their song – the Chiffchaff, Willow Warbler and the much brighter Wood Warbler which is only rarely seen in the Clot. The problem for us here is that these birds generally don't sing while on migration, so we have to look for some very subtle clues which are not always easy to see. The first clue is in the length of the wing – the Chiffchaff's wing is shorter than the Willow Warbler's, and it usually has dark brown or black legs whereas the Willow Warbler has fleshy-coloured legs (hidden in shadow in my photo, just to make life more difficult!) and has a more prominent yellow eye stripe. So you've only got a few weeks to find one, by the end of April they will all be gone, but in the meantime they will be here in good numbers feeding themselves up ready for the next stage of their long journey. If you can find one and identify it, you'll be well on the way to becoming a true bird nerd! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month. Mark
