Hi everybody,
We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month
To start, I would like to inform that on the 26th of March, the Santa Pola Town Hall Tourism Department organizes English guided tours to the Salt Museum from 11a.m to 1p.m. as well as the Municipal Aquarium, the fishing harbour and the fish auction from 5p.m to 7p.m. Booking is required at the Tourist Info offices. The only Moors and Christian’s parade this month take place in Villafranqueza, (North Alicante) on 16th of March at 6p.m. In Valencia one of the biggest fiestas in Spain “Las Fallas” takes place. The programme is too long but there are parades on main days from 15th to the 19th, floral offerings etc. This event is very emotive one with spectacular fireworks, festival, dancing and music everywhere, and of course the most impressive “Mascletaes”(powerful firecrackers). If you do not feel like going to Valencia you can always enjoy “Fallas” in Benidorm, Calpe, Denia or Pego. This is all for this month. Hello Everybody, It’s nice to see more people about after a really quiet couple of months. There was a few special birthdays last month and you can see the pictures in the magazine. Don’t forget it’s St.Patrick’s day this month, lots of entertainment being organized, so please try to go and support them and lets hope for a warmer day than last year. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 8 and Casper on page 20

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Santa Pola Swimming Pool Dear Ged and Lou, Can you please ask the Town Hall, when will the swimming pool in Santa Pola open again? Kind Regards, Sue Town Hall Answer: The issue of the pool has occupied a large part of the political action of the Mayor and the Government Team. This is a very complicated issue, since the company that started the works at the time declared bankruptcy, and the City Council had to go to court to resolve the contract. Currently, we are waiting for the ruling to be issued by the Judge and, while that is happening, we are making arrangements to contract an economic feasibility study for the exploitation of the pool, since the City Council can not risk going back to tender the work of the pool (the facilities are practically in ruins) and that all the citizens return to see how the construction of the pool is paralyzed. Q; Camping at Carabassi Beach Hey Ged & Lou, I'm not happy that an informal campsite has emerged at the Carabassi beach. There are many possibilities for camping in the area, however, overnight of 30 to 50 mobile homes each night and at least one car is seen for about 14 days (easily recognizable). There is no toilet access, no facilities for dishwashing or access to clean water and when you talk to a local police officer he does nothing. Because Camping takes place on beaches/parking areas that belong to Santa Pola and Elche, I hope that you will publish this mail in the advertiser and channel this mail to the right person in the respective municipalities.
protocol should be put in place to prevent the encampment of mobile homes from occurring in a continuous and uncontrolled manner. However, if after calling the police, no action has been taken, we ask you to inform the City Council, filing the corresponding complaint (with photographs as proof if available) to apply the Municipal Law and establish the fines that may correspond. Q: Road Sweeper Hi Ged & Lou, next time you meet the council can you please ask why, since well before Christmas, our streets, Ie Calle Malta, Calle Chipre & more, have been completely neglected by the contractors who are supposed to keep the streets clean & free of weeds, they have not done what they are contracted to do. The road sweeper seems to have completely disappeared not seen at all since before Christmas. I am sure many more people are suffering form the same lack of street cleaning of which we all pay for. I have complained in recent years that the only streets that are kept clean are the main roads. We all pay for this service but do not receive what we pay for. The council are our representatives who employ the contractors, but I am afraid they completely fail to monitor the service paid for. Maybe if some counselors took to the streets of Gran Alacant & checked if their contractors did the work they were contracted to do was acceptable, on finding they failed to do the work to a good standard they should withhold payment
Town Hall Answer: In principle, simply by calling the police, the

for work not done. This might improve our scruffy looking Gran Alacant & give us a place to be proud of , I am afraid as it stands I feel a little ashamed driving around a dirty urbanisation. I am a big believer in kicking some ass & stopping payment until standards are maintained. Shame we cannot stop paying the council tax (suma) until standards are maintained. Last time I wrote re this complaint the council said we should talk to the contractors & complain. Sorry that's why we employ you, the council for, you employ these poor contractors it’s your job to make sure standards are high. Bill Town Hall Answer: In relation to the disagreement with the cleanliness of the streets, we have to say that it is a very common complaint among the citizens, not only of Santa Pola, but of Gran Alacant. Specifically, in Gran Alacant we must take into account that there is a significant number of private streets, with the communities of owners responsible for contracting and paying for all public services (cleaning, sewerage, electricity, asphalting ...). However, the streets Malta, Cyprus, etc. They are public, except for error or omission, and we transfer your complaint to the company in charge of street cleaning. In addition, we want to inform you that, at present, we are preparing all the necessary documents to be able to rehire the street cleaning service, which will have more stringent conditions with respect to the cleaning standards that must be maintained in each and every one of the public streets. Finally, regarding the topic of plant waste from pruning, we want to warn that we have detected that some private owners hire garden companies that do not rent the corresponding (and mandatory) containers for waste. From here, we want to call for civility and the fulfillment of the order of coexistence for all citizens.
Barry’s Bits of News: Q: Improvements in sports centre? The news in the newsletter in last month’s
magazine shows that Gran Alacant should be very rich soon.200,000 euro coming to us every 2 months, from MASA (don’t hold your breath). Will it ever happen? I personally have an interest in improvements to the Gran Alacant sports track, with the Gran Alacant Oldies Football Club being based at the GA sports centre. What improvements are envisaged? Town Hall Answer: It is true! The City Council has begun to collect, once and for all, the historical debt of MASA, estimated at more than 3 million euros, in such a way that it will enter more than 120,000 euros every two months. With that money, in addition to paying debts that the previous government team left, from the Department of Sports, and in November last year, a project of reform and improvement of the sports facility of Gran Alacant was projected, specifically the outdoor track that there is in the pavilion, with new asphalting, better equipment and more security, which will cost about 12,000 euros. In addition, the purchase of defibrillators has been budgeted for all sports facilities, in order to provide health security in all areas where sports are carried out, thereby complying with the Sports Law of the Valencian Community. Q; Keeping Gran Alacant tidy Whilst in Rome last month, we were very surprised and disappointed at the rubbish everywhere, spoiling their wonderful City.

We moan about Gran Alacant, but Rome was much worse! We must learn from this and be on top of it here on GA so that we do not end up like Rome!
Town Hall Answer: In all cities, cleaning is, in fact, one of the points of public life that represents a big problem.
Santa Pola. The estimated work budget is 3.9 million euros. This of course is the main N332 road that runs for many miles North and South and has very heavy traffic, particuarly the many that have to queue in the middle lane to make the dangerous left turn. ********** Many sports on GA are always given plenty of space in this magazine, so I do like to promote our success story whenever possible. 7th February saw attendance records smashed when 21 players turned up to join in with our session. With this in mind, we are now looking at extending our playing time to 1 ½ hours, still starting at 12 noon, so that everyone gets plenty of playing time.
Of course, in the case of European capitals, such as Rome, due to its great tourist attraction, road cleaning should be addressed as a priority issue. For this reason, as Santa Pola, together with Gran Alacant, is also a tourist municipality, we must protect our image by improving our cleaning service, for which we are currently developing the procedure for hiring a new cleaning service with certain conditions much stricter in terms of cleanliness frequencies in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola, because, indeed, we do not want the same thing that seems to happen in Rome. ********** Two new long awaited improvements may soon be underway. It seems that a new health centre is now out of the question. Central government do not seem to see our needs, with other towns nearer the top of the queue than us. So, a 90,531.60 euro grant is to be used to update the surgery we have at the moment. One problem as this expands, is of car parking near to the building, as most spaces seem to be taken up by non-medical persons. When patients are unwell they sometimes have to park a long way away, maybe some land around the back and side of the centre could be utilised for parking. ********** The next major problem to be rectified is the terrible dangerous road junction into
8
We now contribute over 650 euro to the sports centre and Town Hall with our sessions here on GA and competitive games held in Santa Pola. To date, two of these home matches have been held at the Pereira Stadium in Santa Pola. Both have been won by a 2 nil scoreline. The Hondon game goals were scored by Gary Beeney and Tim Litherland and in the game against San Miquel the goalscorers were Gary Beeney and David Lamb. 14 of the Thursday regulars made themselves available for the second game giving us 9 players on the pitch plus 7 substitutes cheering on from the sidelines. After both games we meet at the smashing Tango Bar in Santa Pola, where we all congregate after the games for a buffet and drinks. ********** If you would like to supply news and info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 14TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.

AlacantKey We are based in Gran Alacant

BEGRIEVEMENTS We have two items of sad news to report this month. We recently were informed of the death of Ethel Finan. Ethel was a regular bowler for several years until she was forced to return to the UK due to ill health. You may also recall that last year Pat Groves, a long-term social member of our club, returned to her native Yorkshire following a serious fall. Sadly, Pat also passed away recently. Our thoughts are with both their families.

THE GRAN ALACANT & LA MARINA BRANCH OF THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION RECENTLY ENJOYED A DAY TRIP TO AGOST Known as the Pottery Village, Ceramics have been made here for the last two centuries. However our visit was not to one of the still operational potteries, but to the Museo de Cantereria. A museum housed in a former ceramic factory, which has been adapted to the needs of 21st century tourism. On our guided tour, we were able to see firsthand an extensive collection of objects for daily use, from the earliest to the present-day. We learned of the process of making the pottery, and lived the experience of entering an “Arab Kiln”. We saw the potters wheels of various heights and sizes. And the enormous outside basins which were used for the decantation of the clay. Our thanks go to the Museum guide Jesus, for an excellent informative presentation which to the eternal gratitude of our members, was in English. After the tour, we moved on to a local restaurant, where we were royally wined and dined.

stress, depression, anxiety and substance abuse, More so in the present unstable political situation.
Signs & Symptoms
It's important to keep in mind that experiencing feelings of anxiety doesn't necessarily mean that you have an anxiety disorder. Moving to a new country can cause a huge stress and it is normal to feel overwhelmed sometimes. These symptoms include: › Physical changes: Decreased appetite, insomnia, trembling, heart palpitations or a racing heart especially in specific circumstances, dizziness, dry mouth, feeling like you need to escape, nausea, abdominal pain or discomfort, muscle tension or unexplainable body aches and pains. Living abroad can be very rewarding and exciting for an expatriate and his or her family members. However, many expatriates often face culture shock, homesickness and social isolation. There is often a lack of support for expats, and it can be more challenging to cope with living in a new country and culture. Many expatriates and their family members can be faced with mental illness – including

› Mental or cognitive changes: Being hypersensitive to criticism, feeling like everyone is watching or judging you - even if you're in an objectively "benign" situation, or feeling as though you're under attack - even if there's no apparent danger or stressor. › Behavioural changes: - Avoiding certain situations. remedies that can help manage it and keep it less dominant in our lives. Dietary and lifestyle choices can be a huge factor in our pain and small changes can make a big difference. Many of us out there suffer from arthritis, for some the pain can come and go in flare ups (I am one of these people, the hip likes to remind me from time to time), others must deal with it constantly. Here are some changes you can make to your life if you are living with it: SOME HELPFUL TIPS We may think they are good for us, but if we experience a flare up then it is good to avoid tomatoes, also potatoes, peppers and aubergines.
Hi there, hard to believe its March already, spring is on the horizon and I hope you are all over the seasonal bugs if you were unlucky enough to catch one. For many of us, it is only the change of season that brings ailments to our lives, however, some of you live with chronic ailments daily.
Reduce your intake of caffeine and alcohol. And foods made from refined white flour and sugar, like breads, pasta and pastries which are all highly acid forming, try and go for a more alkaline diet. The same goes for cow’s milk, high-fat cheeses and red meat (and dare I say it) chocolate.
This month I am going to talk about arthritis.
On the other hand, some foods that will benefit you are cherries, plums, blackberries (all great for getting the uric acid out the joints), pineapple which is highly anti-inflammatory.
We need our medication when dealing with chronic illnesses but there are also holistic

Eat lots of fresh green vegetables to help re-alkalize the system. Throw in a juicer and put it into little shots if you aren’t too keen on the veg. For all that know me, you will have heard me many times harping on about ginger. Have a cup of fresh ginger tea daily, the benefits are truly amazing. The same with turmeric. 2 of my favourites! If you love curries, make sure you add these 2 ingredients along with your onions and garlic for a great antiinflammatory bonus. Get some seeds and if you are not sensitive to nuts, also make them part of your “daily dose” sunflower, sesame or pumpkin seeds are all rich in essential fatty acids which are vital for healthy joints. Hazelnuts, cashews and almonds are also great for the joints. Glucosamine sulphate is one of the bestknown supplements to help with this condition. And a B-complex is good for it. A vitamin C is also beneficial along with a good quality antioxidant formula. And if you don’t like the curries, get some turmeric capsules in your system. A nice gentle massage on the joints using some aromatherapy anti-inflammatories has amazing benefits, if taking medication or supplements is not your thing. This will help soothe the joints and ease stiffness. If you are interested, I have loads of blends I use on different arthritic pain, feel free to ask me any questions. Lastly, laugh…don’t let the chronic pain dominate your whole thoughts and life,
I know it may be hard some days, but it is well known that the patient with the positive mindset can heal quicker than the patient who is down. So, get a good comedy on daily, or simply spend your day surrounded by people who make you smile. A HUGE favourite mentor/author of mine that I am happy to share with you is Dr.Joe Dispenza, I have his books and read them very often, 2 of my favourites are “Evolve The Brain- The science of changing your mind” and “You Are The Placebo” for any coaches, or NLP therapists out there I am pretty sure these tools are used within your clinics, I definitely use them in mine and once that knowledge is applied its pretty hard to change the mindset back again. so, pick up the helpful books and read.

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Cumbre del Menejador, Parque Natural del Carrascal de la Fuente Roja
My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. This one was truly an enjoyable hike even if it was quite long: 17 km and bit over 5 hours. Some of the time was spent eating snacks and enjoying views. Once again bit tricky to explain where to park your car. You can always go back to the Ibi factory area at Avenida Joaquín Vilanova and park there and walk about 700 meters back to this point that you see in the picture below. Before the little bridge turn right and leave your car there. Start walking along the ravine uphill.
42
Driving Time: 1hour Walking Time: 5+ hours Google maps directions: Partida Campos, 13, 03440, Alacant, Espanja
You’ll walk past an old mill and some houses. The route is marked with white and yellow = markings.
Parque Natural del Carrascal de la Fuente Roja has many routes to follow. We didn’t follow the given routes. We started with the red route and switched to the blue route to get to the peak of Menejador. We visited the peak where there is a fire control tower. At the peak you can see all around the area. It’s definitely worth the climb. There are beautiful landscapes along the way when you go higher. When you reach Mas de Foiaderetes (picture below on down right corner) you can choose which way to go. If you wanna go up to the highest peak, choose to continue the path going up.
THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Going further up there is a recreational area where you can have picnic. Again around that area you have option which way to go. We chose to continue to the highest peak.
When we got down from the peak and arrived at the fire control tower, we took a right (under the fire control tower) and went down the path through the woods. You can see an official sign with little “i” signalling to a little path. From the little path down through the woods you arrive at the ancient coal burning place. After you have looked around that area you can continue up (left when coming down the path through the woods). You eventually arrive to that same recreational area where you can once again sit down and get something to eat. After that we returned the same way we came from. The whole Parque Natural del Carrascal de la Fuente Roja area seems very nice and it was an interesting day’s adventure. Our hiking day happened on a day when we had Sahara dust over
us, so even though the sky was clear, the visibility was low. I bet it’s even more beautiful on a clear day. The Font Roja natural park was declared on April 13 1987 natural park by the Generalitat Valenciana. It is located in the North of the province of Alicante, between the towns of Alcoy and Ibi. This natural park is one of the best preserved natural areas of the Valencian Community. The protected natural area covers 2.298 hectares and comprises mountainous alignment of El Alto de San Antonio, El Carrascar of the Font Roja and La Teixereta. The summit of the Sierra del Menejador, with 1,356 m of height, is the highest elevation of the park! Next month we go on foot again, Hasta luego, Heidi & Olli
CHECK LIST
Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

CYCLING with Bici Gran Alacant by Olli-Pekka & James Fulcher Bici Gran Alacant is a group for all road bike cyclists in and around Gran Alacant.
Cueva de San Pascual and Orito “All the routes are downhill and with a nice tailwind! (except the bits with climbing and a headwind).” Remember to always take a sense of humour...
Camino de Santiago is one of the most famous pilgrimage routes in Europe. The best known is the northern route. But there is also Camino de Sureste which leaves from Alicante. One of the first stops on the route is “Cueva de San Pascual” in Orito. A Small cave chapel on top of a hill in Orito, Monforte del Cid. According to one story it is a place where young couples go and ask for their blessings. The chapel can be reached by bike as well and I have to say that after going up the last very steep bit to the church you may well end up saying a few prayers. The shortest way to get to Orito and Cueva de San Pascual is through Alenda Golf. You can get there either through El Rebolledo and/or La Alcoraya or via CV850 from Elche. The first two routes I found more scenic but the latter maybe has fewer harder ramps to climb. Whichever way you choose you cannot avoid going uphill. Once you reach Alenda Golf ride almost to the top. Turn right just before the yellow townhouses on the right and continue onwards for couple of blocks. Then turn left to short steep ramp. At the bottom of the descent just after a speed-bump it’s a sharp right turn right to “Calle el Greco” So watch your speed. Ride through the vineyards until you reach at the end of the road where you turn right. You can see the Scallop symbols of the Camino at the signs on junctions. The last 600m to the top are

REALLY REALLY steep. So be aware. The first bit is over 15% gradient and it does not ease off much but the view on the top makes the effort worthwhile. You have fantastic views to the sea on one side and the valley and mountains on the other. Unfortunately there isn’t a cafeteria at the top but there are a few down in Orito. For the return journey you can always re-trace your cookie trail back to home. Alternatively you can follow the small

DRAMA IN A TEACUP Jack wasn’t sure what it was that attracted him to the young woman, there was something about the way she seemed to move so easily among the other passengers. He had boarded the Cruise Ship just in time to catch a late lunch and was now beginning to explore the ship’s facilities. She first caught his attention in the huge Atrium. It was a vast enclosed space at the centre of the ship, rising from the main deck, with an enormous glittering chandelier hanging above the curved staircase. She was ascending the crystal studded steps, in the company of a man who looked to be about her age. They were talking easily together and she seemed amused by his stories, with the occasional smile passing over her lips.
Later that afternoon, the tea and apple cake were both exactly what he needed, or rather wanted. He had been people watching for an hour or so but the young woman had not passed through the Venetian Themed café which extended across the entire ship on this deck, between the Jazz Bar and the Casino. Jack moved into the Casino area where the jangling of the gaming machines drowned out the ever present background music and the occasional cry of the croupiers at the tables. The bright lights simply enhanced the sparkling top she was wearing over her long dress. The young woman was sitting at the roulette table, now in the company of an older man, and once again, seemingly attentive and amused, in the way he had seen her on the staircase and clearly, completely at ease is striking up a conversation with other Cruise Passengers. That evening, Jack wasn’t particularly interested in the fine dining options available on board and he was content with the allocation for dinner in the open restaurant towards the back of the ship. The sun was setting as he took his place at the table with four fellow passengers, where discussion centred around the excursion to Rome which was scheduled for the next day. As Jack looked through the

huge picture windows, down to the deck below where the cocktail bar extended to the stern of the ship, the young woman walked into view, again with the young man she had been with when Jack first saw her. They continued on together to the rail and seemed to be staring at the wake of the ship as the last rays of the sun played on the tops of the waves. Jack turned to the waiter to give his choice of a drink with dinner and when looked again to the deck below, the young woman was gone. The man stood alone. It had only taken a moment and Jack felt sure that there hadn’t been time for her to move across the deck and out of sight. He panicked. Rising quickly from the table, he went to the desk at the restaurant door and told the uniformed crew member that he feared someone had gone overboard. Jack was immediately taken to the Security Office where he explained who he was and hurriedly detailed his concerns about the young woman, giving a description of her and the young man she had been with. There was a brief huddled conference between the two staff members and then they asked Jack again for a description of the woman. He was frantic that they should take action but the both seemed to relax for a moment and told him to wait while they made an enquiry in another office. It seemed like an age before they came back and he was relieved when they invited him to accompany them. When he was shown into the Office of the Chief Security Officer, Jack saw the young woman sitting at a desk. She was now dressed in a white uniform with two gold insignia emblazoned on her shoulder tabs. “Hello Jack” she said, “I’m sorry if you were worried about my sudden disappearance, but I had to leave quickly by the staff exit in the Cocktail Bar. I thought I had given the game away to one of the two potential con-men who may have been working the Cruise Ships”.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Trampoline Fun at Urban Planet Alicante
desk where I purchased the required special antislip socks and paid to use the play area for an hour. I put the girls shoes, coats and bags in a locker, grabbed my camera and we were off .
Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 9 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. One day in January when the weather wasn´t so warm, I wanted to find a new indoor activity and discovered Urban Planet in Vista Hermosia Centro Comercial in Alicante which is a trampoline park. When we entered we were surprised at how large the building was and the amount of different areas there were. We walked through the refreshment area where you can buy soft drinks and snacks and went to the desk. As it was our first time we had to register my name and NIE using one of their tablets and then we returned to the
68
The largest area was filled with many trampolines that also went up the walls and there were some obstacles around as well. The girls loved bouncing on them and then discovered the foam pit that they could bounce and jump into. They spent quite a bit of time trying to coordinate a run, jump and land. Next to the pit was a small raised area with an airbag beside it that lots of kids were flinging themselves onto. After some encouragement Ashlee and Miriam conquered their fears and joined in. There were a few monitors around who were keeping an eye on everyone and also encouraging them to try new things which was great. Next the girls went into an enclosed space that had trampolines in it with basketball nets at various heights. They had so much fun trying to jump and score a basket. After stopping for a water break Ashlee and Miriam went over to an area that housed a mini ninja warrior circuit. It was
Out & About with Star & Ashlee CARABASSI CENTRE
Out & About with Star & Ashlee fantastic and had various obstacles that can be climbed on, or manoeuvred around to progress around the course. Some of the iconic obstacles from the show, including the starting “stepping stones” and the finishing “wall” were great fun to try out. There was also a staircase and platform for jumping onto a large airbag, however, when we were there this was not operational.
Sundays and holidays they open from 11:00 to 22:00 and it costs €11 per person. You can buy a “bono” ticket for 10 hours for €60, University students can get a 10% discount and they often have special offers such as “Jumpers Day” on Wednesdays where you can get a 30% disco
“Acrobacias” classes cost €20 for one class, €25 for half a month, €50 for a month or you can buy a “bono” for 10 classes for €190. Birthday parties include 1 hour or 1 and a half hours use of the activities with monitors who organise group games and all the children get a pair of socks, a gift, facial fluorescent paint, food and drinks. For more information you can look at their website https://urbanplanetjump.es/alicante/ or contact them on 965 778 775 or mobile 683 163 921. This place is a lot of fun and not too expensive, the socks are €2 and once you have them you can wash them and use them again. They are open Monday to Friday from 16:00 to 22:00 and it costs €9 for one hour per person. On Saturdays,
This was a really fun place to go, Ashlee and Miriam had a great time and we will definitely be going back!!! Until next time Star and Ashlee xxx

Grandmother whose skull is crushing her spine told by NHS to fund her own £100,000 life-saving operation
Hi GA Advertiser! I have been a GA resident for ten years now, but have a friend in the UK who needs a very special life-saving operation which cannot be done in the UK, nor be funded on the NHS. She is booked to come to Barcelona early May to have the operation. To fund her operation, her family have set up a Go-Fund-Me page and a couple of news articles have been written. As your magazine has a decently-sized readership, I would like to run a page in the next magazine. Of course, every donation counts, but the main source of help would be for readers to share it on social media to spread the word. Many thanks in advance, Duncan Karen Scott, 51, has been told if she moved too suddenly she could be ‘internally decapitated’ A grandmother who could be ‘internally decapitated’ if she moves her neck too suddenly is desperately trying to raise funds to have life-saving surgery. Karen Scott suffers with a debilitating genetic condition which means the weight of her skull is slowly crushing her spine. The 51-year-old fears she could be paralysed or die without the £100,000 operation which she’s been told will not be funded by the NHS. The mother-of-two was diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos syndrome (EDS), a connective tissue disorder, just last year, despite having had it since birth. Her condition has now deteriorated and she’s developed craniocervical instability (CCI),
72
which means the muscles in her neck are too weak to support her head. “It feels as if my neck is a paper straw and my head is a bowling ball and I’m two inches shorter than I once was due to spinal issues. “There is no neurosurgeon in the UK able to perform this operation on those with EDS. I feel let down by the NHS when I need it the most. “For every day that goes by, the risk of this paralysing me or worse increases.” PAIN AND FATIGUE Karen, from Hartfield in East Sussex, remembers noticing she was doublejointed as a child. “I studied dance at school and could bend my limbs back and do all kinds of tricks. It didn’t hurt then.” It was when she was 17 and she injured herself skiing and her knee would keep popping

out of place that she suspected something wasn’t right. And after suffering a gastro infection at 23, further health problems emerged including migraines, extreme fatigue, muscle and join pain and bowel problems. Karen recalls that when she was pregnant with her daughter at age 29, her condition got worse. “I thought it was just the position of the baby at first but all my lower body hurt. I kept getting shooting pains in my legs that have never gone away.” At 32 Karen suffered a stroke due to an unrelated heart condition and at 36 she was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). “I think because I’ve had multiple health problems it’s taken me longer that most people to get diagnosed with ED,” she said. “The doctor told me he hadn’t diagnosed anyone in their 50s with it, because either by then they have long known they have it or they aren’t alive anymore.” FORCED TO GIVE UP WORK Despite multiple challenges, Karen continued to work three days a week as a finance director until 2016 when she was forced to give it up. “I went from occasionally needing to use crutches to always needing them,” she said. “Then I needed the wheelchair to get around and a mobility scooter.” She says she suffers extreme pain that’s a 10on a scale of one to 10. She can dislocate her joints around half a dozen times a day. “I can put my finger out just by flushing the toilet,” she said. “The pain is constant now and I’m on a lot of pain killers but they barely have any impact.” Roughly one in 15 people develop CCI as a result of having EDS, due to the lack of tissue support at the craniocervical junction. “The worst thing is I’ve been told if I move my neck too suddenly I could internally decapitate myself,” she explained. “It’s frightening that I’ve had this all my life and only knew about it last year when it’s become so much worse.” NO FUNDING Karen said she was told by her doctor that there isn’t a specialist on the NHS who can treat EDS, so she needed to seek private treatment. She has visited Dr Vicenç Gilete
in Barcelona, who is thought to be one of only three surgeons in the world capable of performing the complex surgery she needs. He has advised her she needs the operation to stablise her neck urgently, otherwise the damage from the diseases will become irreversible. She is booked in for the surgery in May. She has to pay for it in full by April.
“It’s a very specialised procedure so I can understand there being no-one in the UK being able to carry it out,” said Karen. “But I don’t get why the NHS can’t provide the funding for me to have it abroad. I’ve tried my best to work through illness and I’ve paid my taxes. “It doesn’t come naturally for me to have to ask for help for myself. I worry about whether anyone will want to help a 51-year-old lady rather than a younger person which I appreciate is more emotive, but I am not exactly old. “I want to live and watch my two-yearold granddaughter grow up and to spend time with my children and my wonderful husband. They all need me.” An NHS England spokesperson said: “Despite the
rarity of Ehlers Danlos syndrome the NHS does fund surgery when it is recommended by clinicians. “However, the decision to undertake such complex procedures has to be based on whether the benefits to the individual patient outweigh the risks.” To donate to Karen’s fundraising page, visit: www.gofundme.com/help-karen-scott-gettreatment

This month, I was ready to tell you all about the many summer migrants which will be arriving in the Clot throughout the month, at the start of one of the most exciting periods for local birdwatchers. The swallows will undoubtedly be back by now, and there are many more species to come. However, events have overtaken that idea, and the good news in February was that the Clot has welcomed back one of the great specialities of our area, and it is to be hoped that this bird will find a partner and stay around to breed once again in the Clot. My picture is of the Marbled Duck or Marbled Teal, known as the Cerceta pardilla in Spanish, and it is one of the rarest ducks in the world. Our corner of Spain holds a good proportion of the remaining population, but their future is threatened by habitat destruction, hunting and pollution. It requires a specific type of pond in which to breed, and the Charco de Contacto pool in the Clot provides exactly that. It is one of the smaller ducks, about three quarters the size of the easily seen Mallard, using both dabbling and diving techniques to find its food in shallow water. The female

will lay eggs usually during April, so if we are lucky we may see a brood of up to ten or more chicks any time from mid-May onwards. They are somewhat random in their migration movements, some will stay here throughout the year, others move to North Africa or further afield, and won't necessarily return to their place of birth. The Marbled Duck has a somewhat chequered history with respect to the Clot; three years ago there were at least two successful broods, but in the past couple of years they were apparently absent from the area. Longer ago, when the Charco pool almost completely dried out, there were several brood failures – the chicks hatched but the low water levels meant that they couldn't get the right sort of aquatic food to survive. Nowadays there is a much better control system for the water levels at the Charco, with major benefits to these rare ducks. This is one of the key species which attracts birdwatchers to the area, being on many “most wanted” lists, and the Spanish and European authorities are well aware of the fact. You can find full details on the EU Action Plan for the conservation of the Marbled Duck by searching under http://ec.europa.eu/environment/nature/ conservation The Marbled Duck and the equally endangered White-headed Duck are synonymous with the Costa Blanca – long may they remain and thrive here! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. “La grandeza de una nación y su progreso moral puedan ser juzgados por la manera en que trata a sus animales”. Gandhi
Forgiveness is a gift you give yourself ...
Hi, I’m Jemma, In the coming months I am going to share what I continue to learn from animals through my work as a volunteer at SAT www.satanimalrescue.com and at the Easy Horse Rescue Centre www.easyhorsecare. net.
The Buddhist philosophy is big on this, the ability to forgive, first ourselves and then others, those that have hurt or harmed us in any way, is central to their way of life. To hold on to bitterness and resentment, ultimately harms only ourselves, affects our internal balance and will prevent our minds from finding peace. It is not easy, but when I groom the beautiful horses I am brought into a place that makes me really appreciate how special it is to be even allowed into the space of these gracious and magnificent beings, and when they invite me in … Wow!!!
Walking the dogs and grooming the horses this week, I am reminded of their remarkable ability to FORGIVE. So many of these animals (but thankfully not all )have had such painful and horrific experiences: thrown out of cars, left for days in abandoned casitas, dumped in the campo with their babies, battered and purposefully injured, locked in stables without food and water..so many awful things that it pains me to even write about. But with nourishment, shelter, care and time the majority go on to forgive us humans, and to not only accept and later welcome but positively enjoy human contact again. My heart opens and is filled with continual awe and wonder when the horses come forth to me, and allow my touch, and for many surrender to it. I find it quite humbling. So I am reminded of the importance of forgiveness in my own life.
82
Forgiveness does not mean that you think it okay, the action or harm that has been done to you, but that you begin a process of letting go your attachment to it, and the influence it still has and continues to have in your life. Somehow you begin to release it from your energy field, for some this can be immediate and for others it is a life times work, as it is for me….

Animals as Teachers By Jemma Pradervand. And to continue with Mindfulness, because as a Ruby says, we live in a frazzled world, walking the dogs this month I have more consciously watched how they just seem to live in the moment. Their attention is focused on one thing, mostly this month , I notice how they love to sniff and scrunt around the ground for bits and pieces of things to eat or smell. They mostly seem blissfully unaware of anything else at these times. When our own focus of attention is singularly on one thing the mind is focused and cannot start rambling, berating and going over and over things. It can find peace with the moment. So if I am really watching the dogs and paying attention to their sniffing and smelling (or whatever it is) my mind is stilled from this repetitive cycle and finds rest in this. With continued practice I know this brings more peace. And peace is what we so badly need in the world right now, and as the words of the song so rightly say... Let there be peace on Earth and let it begin with me., Until next time, Jemma x Please get in touch with SAT or Easy Houre if you are interested in volunteering in any way.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY The last few weeks, weather-wise, have been perfect for golf with little wind and bright, warm winter sunshine. However, February has been a relatively quiet month for the Society as a number of our core members have used the time to return to the UK to visit family and friends. As we move into March we shall see longer days with the heat of the sun arriving earlier in the day. We shall also see the return of those members absent during February and we have had messages from a number of golfers who played with us last year for the first time to tell us they will be returning to GA and would like to join us again this year. During March there is St Patrick’s Day which seems to be a great attraction here with many people coming back to GA for the celebrations. We expect our numbers to be swollen further by the regular golfers amongst those joining us again. Happy days !! As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY MARCH 8TH so-called breeder was not an authorized one. Some weeks ago a client rang us: “I want to talk to the boss”. I replied I could help him whatever the matter was. He insisted he wanted to talk to the boss and I insisted he could talk to me perfectly. Then he apologized: “I’m sorry. I don’t know who’s the boss. I don’t even know if you three are all Vets. Sorry again. I just wanted to make an appointment with a Vet”. Some years ago, a girl who was a regular customer of the practice, came with a new rescued female dog. She was about 10 kg and short black & white coat. She also was very nice and very young. The owner was very worried about the dog, and she wanted to neuter her as soon as possible, because probably she was pregnant. We asked the owner how long has she had the dog, and if she didn’t want to wait a few days in case the previous owner appears. She told us the dog had appeared 2-3 weeks ago. The dog showed symptoms of season, and was initially picked up by a neighbour who also had a non-neutered male dog. A few weeks later, when the season finished, the female dog was abandoned again. The girl finally said: “they just kept the female as long as she was in season in order to let their male dog...”. She wasn’t able to finish the sentence, but we understood perfectly. The female was neutered, vaccinated and chipped, and finally adopted by a new family. Some years later, another client came to the practice with a female Yorkshire Terrier aged 4. She was dirty, and her long coat full of knots. “I’ve just bought her”, she said. “How could you buy an animal in this poor condition? Who can sell a dog like this?”. The owner replied: “I know this is not fair, but the dog was used for breeding. Five litters in 3 years. I just wanted to rescue her from that nightmare”. Apart from having the dog visited by us, the owner reported the Police, unfortunately without legal consequences. As anyone can imagine, that

When I started working I didn’t like the fact that, for most clients, I was “the girl”, and my male colleagues were “the Vets”. In some cases, somebody said “what a young Vet”, but nobody doubted, in case of a man, that he was actually a Vet. And I was the girl. Now I am 47, and if anybody calls me “girl”, I smile. I don’t care if anybody asks me to see the Vet. I just explain that we all three are Veterinary Surgeons, but any client can choose the Vet who want to talk to, of course. I am a Veterinary Surgeon and a feminist. Why? Just because there is still some people who believe women are “the girls”, and females role is giving birth.
