AJ HOTEL IN GRAN ALACANT The new 4 star is scheduled to open in midMarch depending on the situation with the Covid19 pandemic.
But just right now we have been told This little luxury is on hold. Till all the Covid is finally out run And Gran Alacant can be filled with fun. Singing dancing and having a ball Fantastic environment for one and all. Food and drink provided in a hurry To help us all get full and merry. Let's all hang in there with a smile Hopefully for only a little while. So while we are kept so far apart Let's keep each other close to our heart. We will laugh dance and hug again soon And feel happy content and over the moon.
At the beginning of February, Loreto Serrano the Mayor of Santa Pola and the Councillor for employment and development, Ana Blasco, accompanied Raúl Serrano, CEO Nou Mediterrani, Javier Vallés, General Manager SH HOTELES and Francisco Martínez, Manager AJ HOTEL for a visit to the AJ Gran Alacant Hotel.
Gran Alacant will always stay strong We're all hoping it won't be for long. Freedom and happiness are in our reach We will soon be on the carabassi beach. Stronger and wiser I have no doubt As this pandemic flame is finally put out. Stay strong you lovely folk. Julie Parker

BARRYS BITS OF NEWS
What a month that was. Almost 3 weeks of it in Elche hospital, so apologies for not providing much news this month. I had a very high temperature when Sandra rang for an ambulance for me. Once I was in the hospital I was tested for covid and had those horrible words by the doctor telling me I had covid pnuemonia. How on earth did I catch it? Particularly being as careful as I had been! It was then a case of wearing a mask to get the oxygen levels up in my blood. On two different ocassions the person in the bed next to me passed away which made my stay even more worrying.
Loreto Serrano congratulated the team and was impressed by the use of space in the hotels design, the quality of the materials and the numerous facilities that will be available.
Sandra also had a test which was positive so was told by the doctor to isolate herself, so, we both had to worry about each other. Each time the doctor came to my bedside he then phoned Sandra at our home to try to reassure her about me, and to make sure she was also ok.

These oxygen masks were hell when they were strapped tightly across your face leaving you unable to talk to anyone or get your message across to anything you needed. They did take it away when you had to eat your food. Talking of food, that in the hospital was surprising very good so always ate well. The sad thing was seeing the staff struggling with all of the ppe necessary to keep them safe. The biggest problem for them was trying to cool down with all of the equipment on.
What wonderful staff, being among covid patients like me and exposing themselves to such a horrible infection. We came home with new medication including a daily injection and an appointment to go back after 2 weeks for a chest xray and blood test. This we did and all was ok, but they are still keeping a check on me as I have an appointment in early March. Thankfully now both of us are on the mend. Stay safe everyone and please do not end up in the hospital.
NEW HEALTH CENTRE FOR GRAN ALACANT
The government team, in a plenary session held at the end of February, will request that the regional administration build a health centre in Gran Alacant and provide a 24-hour SAMU unit to Santa Pola throughout the year. The City Council will make the land for construction available to the Department of Health, as well as the project that was presented to the Department of Infrastructure in 2009. Given the current health crisis derived from COVID-19, health has become a fundamental resource in our society. As has already been stated on many occasions, there is a problem of a lack of sanitary infrastructures for the population of Gran Alacant, so they will insist on the urgency of equipping this area with a health centre that can meet the needs of residents.
6
The current clinic, which requires expansion, is not a sufficient infrastructure to serve the population of Gran Alacant. There are more than 11,000 registered inhabitants as well as a huge number of people who are classed as "displaced", due to the special characteristics of the area, and those who work in Elche or Alicante. The census population in the municipality of Santa Pola is 33,303 inhabitants, however, there is a large number of people that constitute what is known as the “floating population”. Taking into account the data on domestic water consumption in 2020, it is estimated that the actual population is closer to 59,000 inhabitants. According to statements by the Mayor Loreto Serrano, it is essential that a tourist municipality like Santa Pola has adequate health care to ensure the comfort of all of its residents.

ANNUAL TAX RETURN 2021 Fiscal residents in Spain must submit an annual tax return. To determine if you are resident in Spain for tax purposes, you must fulfill one of the following conditions: - Spend more than 183 days a year in Spain (January to December)
- If most of your essential activities and economic interests are situated in Spain: your main bank account, your permanent address, your pension is paid in
Spain, etc.. -If your family (partner, children…) lives in Spain.
Once it is clear that you are fiscal resident in Spain, you need to inform your country of origin that you have changed your fiscal residency, so that your
income or pension stops being taxed at source. There is one exception though: civil servants, who must continue paying taxes in the country where they worked.
Then you can ask the Spanish Tax office to deduct the tax directly. In Spain, you are liable to pay income taxes if your income or pension is over €22,000 (when
you have one source of payment) or over €14,000 if you receive income from two sources (for example two different pensions.) If you receive more that
€1,600 of bank interest or investment income it is compulsory to file a tax return, irrespective of you income. To submit an annual tax return in Spain you will need to register in the selfassessment system of HACIENDA (Spanish Tax Office). The first time only your NIE number and a bank account will be required, and the following years you will also need to include a case of the previous year tax return. How much tax will you pay? It will depend on the income tax band you are in.
The Spanish system is progressive: 19 % up to 12,450€, 24% between €12,450 -
€20,200 and then progressively. The minimum personal allowance is 5.550€ and it varies depending on your personal circumstances: age, children, etc. REMEMBER: the period to send the tax return starts on the 7 April and the deadline is the 30 June 2021. WE HOPE THAT YOU WILL FIND THIS INFORMATION INTERESTING. SHOULD YOU HAVE ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS OR REQUIRE ANY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION DO NOT HESITATE TO CONTACT US TO BOOK AN APPOINTMENT AND WE WILL BE DELIGHTED TO HELP YOU.

Memory BERNARD THOMAS 14/1/1950 4/2/2021

Bernard Thomas, beloved husband, brother, uncle, friend and neighbour, left us unexpectedly on Thursday, February 4th. Bernard was born in the small coalmining town of Tredegar in south-eastern Wales on January 14th, 1950, and proudly served in the Army for over 25 years before retiring in 1992 with the rank of Warrant Officer First Class. During his time in the Army, Bernard was posted all over the world including Germany, a country he grew to love during his many years there and became a judo champion and ski instructor. In 2006, Bernard retired to Spain with his husband Martin and he spent his time socializing, nattering over the garden wall, painting, walking on the beach, and photographing the sunset from his front porch. Bernard was the kind of person who lived to be in service of others and always sought to help everyone. He will be missed.

Post COVID19 syndrome Post COVID19 Syndrome is made up of various sequelae that patients report even when recovering from coronavirus disease. It can affect various organ systems. Various symptoms are being described that persist for weeks and even months after COVID infection. Many patients complain of palpitations, chest pain, dyspnea, dizziness, neurological disorders, dizziness, high blood pressure, or extreme fatigue even three months after being discharged from a hospital. Even some of those who had mild symptoms and received a negative PCR result suffer from debilitating and changeable symptoms, which some attribute to the inflammatory effect of SARS-COV-2 and others to the usual consequences of a virus. Older adults and people with other illnesses have the most persistent symptoms after COVID-19 infection, although even the young and healthy may be unwell for weeks or even months after infection. The most common signs and symptoms that persist over time include: • Fatigue • Shortness of breath • Persistent cough • Pain in the joints • Chest pain
12
Other long-term signs and symptoms may include: • Muscle pain • Headache • Palpitations • Loss of smell or taste • Problems with memory, concentration, • Insomnia • Skin rash • Hair loss Although COVID primarily affects the lungs, there are other organs that can be affected. The heart: Heart tests after recovery from COVID19 have shown damage to the cardiac smooth muscle that can be long-lasting. The lungs: The pneumonia that COVID-19 frequently presents affects the pulmonary alveoli, which in the long term after healing

can lead to long-term respiratory problems. Nervous system: After recovery, symptoms such as dizziness, headaches and feelings of fatigue and changes in mood have been described. Not much is yet known about how COVID-19 is going to affect people over time. But researchers recommend that doctors closely monitor people who have had COVID-19 to see how their organs are working after they recover. Most people with COVID-19 recover quickly. But the possible long-lasting problems of COVID-19 make it even more important to reduce transmission of the disease by taking precautions like wearing face masks, social distancing, and keeping your hands clean. If you have any further questions or symptoms, please contact our clinic on T: 865 789 554 or your doctor.

MONTEMAR BOWLS & SOCIAL CLUB Some good news, club members who contracted the Covid Virus in January have all made a full recovery or almost fully recovered. We wish them all well and hope everyone else stays safe and well. We can only hope that at the next review on 1st March the situatoin will have improved enough that lockdown can be relaxed, so we can look forward to bowling again and enjoy social events. Our Social Committee will be ready to spring into action as soon as possible. Its unlikely we will be involved with playing other Clubs in the leagues before the end of the summer. As soon as possible we will recommence internal competitions. However this will require a big clean clean up before we can start bowling, so be ready with your rubber gloves. So, enjoy the rest before the Club jumps back to life again. In the meantime take care. Chris Harding (Chairman) As we have been unable to bowl because of the restrictions I thought I would recall past competitions and social events with mainly photos.

BARRY CONRON 30/1/2021
To anyone who knew Barry, they will remember him as a happy go lucky gentleman. He loved his golf and football, visiting Portugal on a regular basis to play golf with his friend Andy. Although small in stature, his agility as a goal keeper earned him the nick name “cat Conron” and played regular going into his thirty’s. He started working in the Nat West Bank at the age of 17, working his way up to director of the south west region and took up golf as corporate days out where required. Barry was a true gentleman who epitomised everything we associate with the game of golf; courtesy, integrity and fair play. He will be greatly missed by all society members who send their condolences to his wife, Anne and their family.
Barry and Anne married on 16th January 1971. They had two children, Mark and Nicola. They then welcomed 3 grandchildren over the years, Luca, Lottie and George.
Barry and Anne bought a holiday home in Gran Alacant in 2001 when Barry retired at the Gran Alacant Golf Society age of 52. Bye Bye BREXIT, EU alright? Firstly a big thank you for the feedback I received. Just to print a few: “Totally agree on the price issue. Been here 20 years and bar and restaurant prices have hardly moved. The price of food has especially in supermarkets which in the early days we didn’t have. Electricity etc has gone through the roof so heating lighting for bars has also. Still no increases to cover costs. Get real bar and restaurant owners before it’s too late and charge the proper price for food and drink leaving you all enough to repair and expand your businesses” Anthony “Agree with the article and here are my two cents, charge more and offer more style, quality or innovation, maybe a proper Thai restaurant, a healthy one where you see nutrients of what you will eat, themed restaurants Hawaii style, I have so many ideas if anybody needs one!” Diana “I would hope that pricing in bars and restaurants is done according to their business model or plan and if they don’t have a viable then they probably will fail. If they have a sound workable plan then they should survive. I know that times are hard for all of the hospitality industry at the moment and the best way to support them is use your local bars and restaurants regularly when we can. I hope that they all make it through to a time when the tourists return.” Bill The concensus of opinion was in agreement. Everyone wants all the businesses to survive, and if the owners consider price rises part of that, I think it’s fair to say you have our support.

Well it’s done. January 1st 2021 The UK finally left the EU. Two months on how has it affected us here? What changes will we see ? Its been a sore subject since 2016, with families split, and friends engaging in heated ‘discussions’ over a few pints. Personally I couldn’t understand why people who live and or work here would vote for Brexit, as overnight the value of the £ fell from 1.31euros 24/6/2016 to 1.12euros 21/10/2016. A fall of 14.5%. It meant that almost overnight anybody who depended on a UK based income here, mainly retired permanent residents suffered a pay cut of 14.5%. I cannot think of a single circumstance where anyone would volunteer such a cut. Imagine the strikes in the UK if bosses imposed such a cut in income! It meant businesses here reliant on the £ potentially lost that too. As overnight the cost to tourists of apartments, entertainment etc suffered an overnight price rise. People were likely spending less. Now the EU is not alright. The Euro is a disaster waiting to happen. You cannot have a single currency across 27 countries who’s economies differ so much, unless the rich are going to share their wealth across the continent, which long term could become a problem. It has seemingly become a pseudo single state rather than the community of trade it was when we joined in 1973. Is this the work of the Germans? The French? Oh how we like to blame them. In my view no. The UK is responsible for its own problems with the EU. UK ministers since 1999 were on the “winning side” 95% of the time, abstained

3% of the time, and were on the losing side 2%. So We agreed with what the EU was doing almost all the time, yet in 2016 we left because we didn’t like what the EU had become!
From now on, new immigrants from the UK will be treated like any other non EU immigrants. There will me income thresholds, capital thresholds.
The UK may not be the country it was in the 19th Century, but it is still a country that has earned lots of respect, and is still an industrial powerhouse, and we SHOULD have fought harder for what we saw were important. We clearly didn’t think our aims were that different.
British Holiday makers will continue to come in their usual numbers. We love Spain, always have and always will, and I think once the current problems end they’ll come in their droves desperate to come back and see their friends and enjoy the hospitality they always find here. So BREXIT will not affect our tourist trade in my view.
The UK failed to take the EU seriously. Look at the coverage of elections in the UK:
Gran Alacant will change, but nothing stands still, and that a good thing.
1. General election. All over the TV and media 2. Local elections. Gets a small degree of coverage 3. European Elections. Hardly any at all (anybody name their last EU MEP?)
I for one am very happy BREXIT is over. We will have to live with it. Britain will survive. The EU? Time will tell. It’ll be even better when COVID has done one and we can get on with complaining about the heat, or the terrible football teams we support.
So my opinion is straightforward . The UK is the reason the EU failed for the UK. What’s your view? Disagree if you wish, send me your reasons why do you disagree.
This months “Reasons to be cheerful part 3” (Courtesy Ian Dury and the Blockheads!) Our first Hotel is near completion. Opening this month!
How will it affect us here in Gran Alacant? Well the strength of the £ is always a variable, so the strength of the British economy compared to Europe will influence that long term rather than BREXIT. It certainly has lost people small fortunes. The fall I mention earlier has cost someone here who lives off 20,000 Euros per annum something in the region of £13,000 over the last 5 years in the exchange rate collapse.
Does somebody trouble themselves to spend millions on something they don’t expect to make money from? No! To make money they need to attract clients. Clients that will also spend in our local shops, and Bars and Restaurants. Are Hotels built in depressed areas? NO! Does an area becoming more popular have a negative effect on our property values? NO!
I can certainly see a fall in the British population here over the next 10-15 years, as gone are the days a pensioner can end their days in the sunshine on a small pension, or someone with nothing more than a few euros can come in the hope of bar work and a summer in the sun, or with the hope of opening their first little bar with a few thousand euros.
Gran Alacant is moving forward!!! There’re reasons to be cheerful. Disagree with anything? What an opinion you have discussed? Message me on terry@montelinvestments.co.uk Putting Terry Talks in the subject matter. Or you can comment on the online version of the magazine on facebook.

Home Turf Works of a master ... During lockdown number 1, stuck in our flat in London, we sought out pastimes that didn’t involve simply staring at a screen. Baking bread and yoga with Adriene became regular parts of our lives. Prompted by a sponsored post on Instagram we ordered a jigsaw. This jigsaw however was not one of a historic scene such as a country cottage. Instead the all powerful Instagram algorithm suggested a jigsaw of a striking red modern building glittering under moonlight.
For all its contemporary fame the building is actually quite old and much more interesting than for just being a pretty Instagram image. It was completed in 1973 and is part of a set of three adjacent buildings in Calpe designed by the renowned Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. The adjacent buildings are called Xanadú and Anfiteatro. Both of these other buildings are fascinating and enjoyable, however it is La Muralla Roja that has become the star attraction with its sister buildings as supporting acts. To understand and enjoy this enigmatic and somewhat confusing building it is necessary to know a little about its architect and his inspiration. Rocardo Bofill was born in 1939 to a Catalan father and Italian jewish mother and sees himself as the heir to a mix of cultural influences from the entire Mediteranean. His spectacular career has spanned over 50 years and his practice has designed more than 1000 projects, a huge number for any architect. He is recognised as one of the most prominent architects of his generation alongside figures such as Foster, Rogers, Stirling, Piano, Gehry and Rossi.
Muralla Roja jigsaw The building in question is one whose image has become widely known through exposure in adverts, lifestyle media articles and social media posts; its name is La Muralla Roja (The Red Wall). The building’s striking appearance composed of geometric blocks of bright colours set against the backdrop of Mediteranean sea and sky has suited it perfectly for the hyper visual age we inhabit. And this glamorous and world famous structure is in fact only a short drive up the coast in Calpe (Cala La Manzanera).
28
HOME TURF CARABASSI CENTRE
Edificio Xanadú
The historical mediteranean architectural influences in his designs are strikingly obvious and he claims it is an authentic response to the location of his European and North African buildings. The three Calpe buildings each draw on Mediteranean architectural history in different ways; Xanadu is derived from the form of a castle whilst Anfiteatro is neoclassical and designed around a Greek amphitheatre form. La Muralla Roja, is intended to take the form of a North African kasbah with a complex of winding alleyways and roof terraces contained within blank external walls. The use of bright colours, especially deep red and light blue, also suggests the historic cities of Morocco and Algeria. It is the visual charm of this combination of interlocking layers and structures with beautiful colours that has given the building its popularity as a subject for photography.
La Muralla Roja Whilst clearly of its period the building has retained a freshness. The renewed interest in the building in recent years has probably been fueled by a growing interest in modernist architecture. This is odd since Ricardo Bofill became best known in the 1980s as a leading exponent of postmodernism and his later work has been the subject of criticism for lacking sincerity. However, La Muralla Roja has become loved and admired and this may be because the forms of vernacular Morocan building that Bofill drew upon for its design combine so well with the modernist styles that have now become newly fashionable. Or perhaps people just love it because it looks great on Instagram… We are indeed lucky to have such important work by a major architect on our doorstep and we hope that you are inspired to include the Bofill buildings in your next visit to beautiful Calpe. All three can only be admired from outside since they are private homes and should be respected as such. There are also numerous other Bofill designed buildings in Spain and abroad, please look them up and decide for yourself what you think of them. We shall certainly be seeking out more of his work once we can travel properly again.

Day in Gran Alacant
BOOK CLUB GRAN ALACANT Book of the month by Beth I think it is time to read something that will cheer us all up This book has been top of the bestseller list for months and is my Recommended Book of the Month Richard Osman The Thursday Murder Club
Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.
Living in a peaceful retirement village, 4 friends meet weekly to discuss unsolved crimes. They call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. When a local developer is found dead with a mysterious photograph lying beside the body, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. As you would expect from Richard Osman, his first novel is full of mystery, intrigue, wisdom and humour. He has created a crime-solving team of OAPs whom we hope will entertain us in his forthcoming series (book 2 is due to be published in September) I look forward to finding out more about these intriguing characters…

Gran Alacant the perfect place to Work Remotely The recent pandemic has meant that we have had to make many changes to our regular lives. However, the ability to work remotely has meant that more people are considering their work/life options. After all, what could be better than being able to live anywhere in the World and still follow your chosen career. With more than 300 days of sunshine every year, Gran Alacant is a great place to be based. Our healthy climate, beautiful blue flag beaches, local nature reserve, commercial centre, supermarkets, banks, financial advisory services and a great range of bars and restaurants, make it a great place to live. Being 20 minutes from the city of Alicante and 15 mins from Alicante airport means that you can easily travel anywhere in the World. There is a Medical Centre, pharmacies, a local library, lots of sports facilities and many Estate Agents that have a wide range of good quality housing to buy or rent long term. There is a primary school and plans are in place for the construction of an Instituto (secondary school). You can also find international Private and Semi-Private schools within close proximity. For those that want to work remotely but not necessarily from home, the Simple Social Hub offers desk and meeting rooms that you can rent. This is a great addition to Gran Alacant and has meant that many people have been able to enjoy the social aspects of being with others whilst also being able to work independently. We have spoken to some people who have taken advantage of being able to work from home, here´s their stories:

Diana Carrasco “Originally from Madrid, I am a Technology consultant working for a European multinational software company. With a career of over 20 years in IT that has allowed me to live and work in Europe, America and Asia Pacific, I find it hard to identify with a specific nationality or country and considermyself more “a citizen of the world”.
This is probably the reason that made me move to Gran Alacant after five years living and working in Bangkok, Thailand. I find Gran Alacant is a white canvas that lets you design the lifestyle you want. I used to travel once a month to Madrid, Milan, London, Stockholm for work (before Covid!), and then enjoyed the great quality of life of GA the rest of the month. My only complaint used to be that I felt lonely working from home the entire day, but that has changed so much after the Simple Social Hub Community Coworking opened and became the meeting point of the lovely and entrepreneurial community of Gran Alacant. I usually do my remote working from there every day and I am amazed by how many people are working remotely from Gran Alacant already!

And more keep coming, moving back from places like London, Berlin and Geneva. After all, why would you choose to do your remote work in high rent cities that also happen to be so cold?”
papers are sent out to me electronically and I have access to a complete law library online. I still keep my horsehair wig safe however, just in case I get called to London to attend in person!”
Juan Ruano “I’m originally from Villena (Alicante). I work as Director of Solutions Engineers for the EMEA region for a US software company delivering Hotel Revenue Management solutions.
Beatriz López “I am Beatriz, I am an architect and have had the opportunity to live and work abroad, spending the last 4 years working in North England for a renowned main contractor. I quite enjoyed all of it but I came to realize I was missing vital stuff I had left in Alicante (yes indeed: weather, food, family, weather again!) where I used to live as a student. So when I learned that our first baby was on its way, my husband and I decided it was time to move.
I have been working remotely for 5 years and decided to relocate to Gran Alacant after 16 years living in London. Despite Covid related restrictions I have been enjoying being back in the area, new and old friends, the weather and our fantastic cuisine. I highly encourage remote workers to give Gran Alacant a go, I’m confident they won’t regret it.” Archie Maddan “I’m a London barrister who has moved to Spain to be with my Spanish husband. I’m working remotely during the pandemic including doing trials and other court hearings by video conference. Once the pandemic is over it is likely that some cases will start being heard again in physical courtrooms and once that happens I will
easily be able to fly back to the UK from Alicante airport. I have been granted full residency in Spain but retain my chambers in London with the arrangement being approved by the Bar Council and my Head of Chambers. Even a very traditional profession has been able to adapt and take advantage of modern technology, all of my
So I gave up a well positioned job but being here I get to work towards a career goal that is even more meaningful to me: developing a business of my own, “The Architect Mate” (page 11) where I get to design nice spaces for people helping them through the ups and downs of the construction process too. Also every day I feel thankful to come and work with our marvelous coworking community at the Simple Social Hub, where I feel 100% motivated and connected and I keep on meeting inspiring people who either work remotely for international companies or develop fascinating projects on their own. I made the right choice by relocating to this charming paradise and yet having the chance to work in a cool environment with no limitations.” As you can see, Gran Alacant offers all you need to have an excellent work/life balance. It has a great international community and a healthy environment. So if your company allows you to work from home, they why not relocate to Gran Alacant, we are sure that you will love it as much as we do!

him back to the Airport ready for his trip. The owners were delighted to inform us that he had arrived safe and healthy in Dubai. Bye Bye Teddy we wish you well.” Grey is a beautiful Greyhound who we collected from Andalusia, near Granada and personally transported to Madrid. Along the way we stopped a couple of times to make sure that he was happy, could stretch his legs and relieve himself. Once at Madrid Airport, we stayed with Grey to ensure that he felt safe and relaxed before he boarded the plane that would take him to his owners in San Francisco. His owners were really happy with the love and care that we took of Grey and sent us some pictures of him enjoying his new home.
We don't just accept cats and dogs, we enjoy taking care of all of your pets. Ninja and Pera were with us for 4 weeks and although they were initially a bit scared, it wasn't long before they started moving around, ate plenty of vegetables and relaxed while they were on holiday with us. We look forward to having them back in the future.
Not just “cats & dogs”... With more than 20 years of experience you can feel safe in the knowledge that your beloved pets will feel welcome, loved and pampered during their stay with us. We appreciate the trust that our clients put in us and always endeavour to go above and beyond to ensure that all the pets in our care remain happy and healthy.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
GREATER SPOTTED EAGLE or transmitter is found, or more hopefully he turns up again at his nesting site in late April.
In May 1897, the great American humorist, novelist and social critic Samuel Clemens best known by his pen name, Mark Twain - was in London. While Twain was in London, someone started a rumor that he was gravely ill. It was followed by a rumor that he had died, and one major American newspaper actually printed his obituary and, when Twain was told about this by a reporter, he said : "Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated". We can but hope that reports of another death in Spain recently are equally false. Tönn is a satellite-tracked Greater Spotted Eagle who was born in Estonia in 2008, and every year since then he has spent the winter at the large El Hondo reserve near Elche. In late December last year, his transmitter stopped working while he was in the Dolores area, and there have been no reliable sightings of him since. It may well be that his satellite tracker (which you can just about see on his back in my photo) has ceased to function – indeed it failed before in 2014 but he was recaptured and fitted with a new transmitter at his nest site in Estonia - but also the area in which he was last known to be is a place where a lot of hunting takes place. We aren’t going to know the answer unless either his body
62 62
If reports of his demise are true, particularly at the hands of hunters, this will be an absolute tragedy since there are probably less than 10,000 individuals worldwide, and the species is classified by the International Union for Conservation as Extremely Vulnerable to Endangered. There are no definitive statistics for how long these eagles live, but most eagle species can live for between 20-25 years in the wild, so he has not yet reached his full potential. The better news is that Tonn is not the only Spotted Eagle to make our area a wintering site; over the past few years up to six individuals have been seen here – reports this winter have been sporadic at best due to the prevailing circumstances – and El Hondo is now a regular winter outpost, far away from their usual wintering sites around central and southern Asia. Tönn is one of the most famous birds on the internet, with an army of online fans in Spain, France, Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia closely following his travels as he flies over these countries. We will not know for sure if he has survived until he returns to his nesting site – I will keep you posted! However, if our worst fears are realised, it will be an absolute disgrace to the reputation of Spanish Wildlife Conservation. You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month...

Mila is desperate for attention and this can be construed as her being boisterous but she is just looking for cuddles. BEETHOVEN Beautiful Beethoven looking for his forever home. He gets a little stressed in the kennel environment, and would love a home to call his own with a garden. He is good with other female dogs, and loves to go on long walks. He is a 3 year old Mastin who deserves a new start
Once Mila has some routine and consistency she will grow into a fantastic companion. She gets on with other dogs but we feel it best that Mila goes to a home with no dogs until she exhibits calmer behaviour as she is very excitable!

VIRTUAL RUNNING - MURCIA
ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS If you want to join us contact Geoff 0044/ 747 685 1356 For those of us not in Gran Alacant, January and February proved to be a challenge for running but the group took to the task and between us ran nearly 1000km in January, and at the time of writing, we are 500km in February. Of course of postponement of the January 21km in Santa Pola was disappointing if not unexpected, but out of the blue we received an email from District Murcia saying they were hosting a series of virtual runs (5k,10k,21k and 42k) between 7th-21st February.
So what is a Virtual Run? Very simply, because we can’t participate in organised group activities where you would run a set course with a large number of people, at a given time on a given day, the organisers invite participants to run a course of their choosing, at a time and date of their choosing. To record the times and verify the distance run, you need to down load an Official App which adds your time to a data
base, from where they can create an “artificial” results list. I say artificial as not all courses will be the same in terms of terrain, hills, weather conditions, traffic, etc, meaning some will have more of an advantage than others. This means you run an individual time-trial against the clock. Of course the missing essential ingredient is the presence of other competitors on the day to spur you on to run faster than you think you can go. Someone is always chasing you down, or you are chasing someone else down.
72
With group members currently in Norway, Sweden, Germany, England, Canaries, and Gran Alacant, we set our training schedules to tackle the virtual run, some choosing 5km others 10km and two choosing 21km. Not everywhere in Europe enjoyed the warm sunny days of Gran Alacant with most parts of northern Europe experiencing snow and freezing temperatures. Training proved to be difficult despite of the weather and some excellent times have been recorded. I know the app crashed for two runners and as it didn’t record their time, they had to run it a second time. We don’t have the results yet so we may be able to give these to you in the next edition of the GA Advertiser.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY
It is with great sadness that we resume this year’s golf without one of the Society’s founder members and past captain, Barry Conron, who passed away on 30 January. Barry was a true gentleman who epitomised everything we associate with the game of golf; courtesy, integrity and fair play. He will be greatly missed by all society members who send their condolences to his wife, Anne and their family.
When: the formal Society Day is Tuesday’s weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together on Friday’s weekly which has always been a Gentleman’s Day.
For those who have recently taken up residency and are considering playing golf on a regular basis, GAGS have negotiated very favourable rates with El Plantio. New members are always welcome as are those of you with holiday homes, making regular visits throughout the year or visitors to the region.
Time: on both days at normally at 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.
At the time of writing, El Plantio is closed in accordance with coronar virus regulations. If this restriction is lifted before the end of February, the tee-times will be 9am. If the course reopens in March, the tee-time will revert to the usual 8am tee-time (see more details below). THE SOCIETY DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS: Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The offficial address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante.
Cost: usually 50 euros per round at peak times to include a buggy plus 1.50 euros mandatory insurance charge. Can be cheaper during less busy off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires 5 euros sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round. For more information please contact: Barry D (966 183 018) Michael (966 698 925) Tony (966 183 004)
We would love to see you!
GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL Another frustrating month for all of us hoping that 2021 would see a more “normal” existence. With the Valencian Community Covid-19 numbers causing alarm the present restrictions in place have been extended to at least the 1st of March. The good news is that Spain is beginning to roll out its vaccination programme and as more vaccines receive European Union approval there is hope that the situation will improve.
Please check our facebook page for updates regarding our indoor playing sessions and if Covid-19 restrictions allow we will discuss our options at our next social get-together on Wednesday 10th March outside Skipper Bar in the Masa Square at 1pm. Stay safe everyone ... John Fraser (WhatsApp 07866 315087)
