Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.com Dear Lou & Ged I just wanted to say how pleased I am to read of the measures being taken to get dog owners to become more responsible for cleaning up after their pets. I was troubled on our last visit as there was so much dog excrement on pavements and on undeveloped ground (next to the school, next to the Health Centre and in the Clot de Galvany nature reserve). It was almost like an obstacle course trying to avoid the mess and it brings down the local areas. Well done to everyone involved in tackling these and other issues. You do a fantastic job! Many thanks Nikki Bennett
It is important to be aware that they cannot be eradicated completely. Here are 8 of the most effective ways to prevent mosquito breeding around your property: • Discard unwanted containers that can collect rainwater • Remove stagnant water from flower pot plate or plant saucers • Keep your rain gutters clean and free flowing • Store the kiddie pool indoors when not in use • Make sure the pond and swimming pool water keeps circulating • Repair any leaky pipes and taps • Keep the outdoor rubbish bins covered • Empty any outdoor pet drinking bowls.
Thank you for your email, if anyone would like to get in touch with their questions/ comments/feedback please email us on info@granalacantadvertiser.com LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA In conjunction with Elche City Hall and the Santa Pola Health Council, weekly fumigations are continuing to control the mosquito population. Following on from the weather phenomenon of last month where the air was filled with dust carried over from the Sahara, we have had record rainfalls in the region. In general, mosquitoes can survive in warm to wet weather conditions. However, during the rainy season, the chance for the mosquito population to breed will increase dramatically. Rainy seasons cause more ‘pockets of standing water’ for potential mosquito breeding grounds.
HEALTH CENTRE The Health Centre will open from 8am to 9pm from July 20th with the appointment of a new Doctor. Cllr Valenzuela said “Thanks to the management team at Elche
Hospital for providing the best service possible given the limited human resources available.”
For any questions or suggestions, you can contact:instalacionesdeportivas.pereira @gmail.com or phone on T: 965412732
GARDEN MAINTENANCE Much needed garden maintenance works have been carried out in different areas in GA thanks to requests from individual residents and neighbourhood associations. Cllr Valenzuela said “Thanks to Encarni, the Councillor of Cleaning, Parks and Gardens, and her team for carrying out the work.”
DEFIBRILLATOR DEVICE FOR GA The Santa Pola City Council has approved the purchase of 5 new defibrillators for the sports spaces of Pereira, Monsa, José Antonio Alemañ (Gran Alacant), Paco Hernández and Silvia Martínez. These are
N-332 Mitma, the Ministry of Transport, has put out to tender the works to widen the acceleration lane at the GA junction on the N332 in Santa Pola. The work will be carried out at km 92,100 of the N332 and has a bidding budget of 238,329 euros. This action is all part of a program which has seen more than 94 million euros invested in the province of Alicante since June 2018. It is hoped that this work will make the urbanisation more accessible and safer for all. IMPROVEMENTS IN SPORTS FACILITIES The Local Government Board has approved the project for a new 7-a-side football field at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre. The Sports Councillor for the area, Julio Baeza, said “We continue working on the provision of new sports facilities in Gran Alacant. We have already started up the basketball court and now this 7-a-side football pitch, which we hope will be up and running by the end of the year.”
in addition to the 2 that already exist in the Manolo Maciá soccer field and in the Lara González pavilion. The Board has approved a contract for a total amount of €7,340 to cover the purchase of defibrillators. The Councilor for Sports, Julio Baeza, said, “It is one more step to continue equipping the sports centres of Santa Pola with security measures. We are committed to continue investing in sports. Having these systems and knowing how to handle them as quickly as possible in the event of an emergency situation will allow us to respond in the most efficient way”. A defibrillator is a device that gives a high-energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. This highenergy shock is called defibrillation, and it is an essential part in trying to save the life of someone who is in cardiac arrest. PROGRESS AT ALDI Thank you Les Mahoney for your photo.
NEW RESERVATION SYSTEM The Sports Council of Santa Pola Town Hall are working to improve the booking system of their facilities. From April 11th, there is a new APP available to users that should speed up the booking system. Download the new APP: https://santapola.reservaplay.com/login

GALS (GRAN ALACANT LADIES) CLEAN UP
Earlier this month, members of GALs (Gran Alacant Ladies) group organised a Litter Pick on Carabassi beach. Julie Lewis said “We love our beach and are very proud of the way in which the authorities take care of it. However, the recent storms had whipped up an excess of debris so we thought we would lend a hand. It was a good excuse for some much-needed exercise and a chinwag. The most rewarding part though was the number of other walkers who came and thanked us for looking after the beach and to find out more about our wonderful group”. Any ladies wishing to join the group which boasts almost 300 members of all nationalities can find them on the following link: https://www.facebook. com/groups/734916743616271

GOOD NUTRITION IMPROVES HEALTH • Provides defenses against diseases. • Protects from some types of cancer. • Prevents osteoporosis. • Helps to prevent heart disease. • Improves intellectual performance. • Improves physical appearance.
Fats and oils: Not all fats are harmful, in addition, fats are necessary in the diet because they have essential substances for the body and for the transport of some vitamins. They have an energetic function.
There is no food that contains all nutrients or is essentials.Good nutrition in addition to physical exercise keeps our body in shape. To establish a balanced diet it is convenient to combine all foods.
Legumes, potatoes, nuts: They combine the three functions (energetic, plastic and regulatory).
EAT ALL TYPES OF FOOD: A balanced diet should be varied and contain all the basic foods. Foods are grouped into several types: Bread, cereals, rice and pasta: They have a lot of carbohydrates and some protein. Energetic function: They provide the energy necessary to maintain an adequate body temperature and carry out normal activities. Fruits, vegetables, vegetables: They have significant amounts of minerals and vitamins, and also a large amount of fiber. Regulatory function: They facilitate and control essential metabolic processes of the body. Milk and dairy products: High in calcium and animal protein. Plastic function: they help to form the body's tissues during growth and replace the continuous wear of existing tissues. Meat, fish, eggs: They are the main source of protein of animal origin. plastic function.
How important is to have a good nutrition? Nutrition, which includes the physiological processes of digestion, absorption, transport, use and elimination of nutrients. Nutrients are the components of food that we need to develop our vital functions and, ultimately, to live. We do not eat them directly, since they are part of the food. These nutrients are: • Proteins • Carbohydrates or carbohydrates • Lipids or fats • Vitamins • Minerals Foods also contain water and fiber, but since they do not provide calories, they are not usually classified as nutrients. If we want to have and maintain good health, we must know the nutrient content of food, to think and analyze if our usual way of eating is correct and, if it is not, to modify our diet. We cannot voluntarily influence the processes of nutrition, but we can in our diet.

• Eat vegetables, vegetables, cereals, bread and potatoes every day. • Eat fresh fruit every day (one of them a citrus, orange, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon). • Eat legumes at least 2 times a week. • Take olive oil as the main fat in the diet, both for cooking and for dressing. • Drink low-fat milk or yogurt or cheese daily. Calcium intake is essential to promote bone mineralization and prevent osteoporosis. • Eat fish several times a week, white and blue. • Fats are necessary for a correct diet, but do not abuse very fatty animal meats. Choose lean meat (without much fat) and eat it 2 or 3 times a week. • Eat fatty meats (red meats, sausages, bacon) occasionally, only once a month. • Do not abuse salt or salty foods. Use garlic, onion, vinegar, lemon or aromatic herbs to season as an alternative to salt. • Drink about two liters of water a day. Water does not make you fat! • Moderate the consumption of sweets, cakes, pastries (over industrial) and fast food. • Avoid alcoholic beverages. One gram of alcohol provides 7 kilocalories (1 alcoholic degree is equivalent to 0.8 grams of alcohol). A good day begins with a good breakfast, continues with a light meal and ends with a simple dinner, after a balanced snack! With this diet, along with sports or physical exercise, at least 30 minutes a day, your health, your body and your mind will thank you.

Book of the month by Beth I enjoyed this legal thriller very much. It has been a while since I had read a Michael Connelly book and he did not disappoint me.

Mickey elects to represent himself in court and is forced to mount his defense from his jail cell. With watertight evidence stacked against him, Haller will need every trick in the book to prove he is being framed. A not-guilty verdict is not enough. Helped by friends and family he and his colleagues must find out who committed the murder and why. He must find the real killer – because that is the law of innocence. This is the 6th book of Michael Connelly’s Lincoln Lawyer Series.

The Lowedown INTERVIEW
with Lynne
with Heather Williams
Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 5 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. Over the next few months, I will be sharing some interview with GA’s very own Superstars! This month’s interview is with Heather Williams. Heather is a busy working mum of two beautiful children son Jayden (11) and daughter Raia (16). She has lived in GA with her husband Gary for nearly 16 years. HEATHER, WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO SPAIN? “We are originally from East Lancashire. We talked about wanting to raise our family outside of the UK. We initially considered United States but finally decided to come to Spain.” WHAT MADE YOU MOVE TO GA? “I got a job in King’s College, The British School of Alicante, teaching Primary school children and stayed there for 12 years. My husband Gary started working there as a part-time Teaching Assistant then later as a Primary PE Teacher.”
TELL ME ABOUT GA ENGLISH CENTRE? “I opened the English Academy at the Novamar Centre back in 2016. My aim was to build a language centre in Gran Alacant, where children could learn English in a fun, friendly and creative environment.” Heather initially worked part-time building her Academy and part-time at King’s College. After 2 years, the Academy was doing so well that she decided to take a leap of faith and focus on building her business. Today, Heather has 130 children on the academy roll with ages ranging from 3 up to 18. This number is growing year on year. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST WORK CHALLENGE? “Lockdown was a difficult time. Changing from face to face teaching to online learning was a steep learning curve for me. I felt like I had to turn into an IT expert overnight.
Navigating technology, software and online resources was challenging. At times, I felt like a kid’s entertainer. This coupled with the fact we had 2 teachers and 2 students in the same house all going through the same challenges … it was stressful.” With every challenge comes new opportunities and Heather said she is now grateful that the online learning opened the door for her to teach children as far afield as Russia and Lithuania. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? “The best thing about teaching is having a positive impact and helping my students develop their English skills. I enjoy seeing them grow in confidence and hearing the positive feedback from their parents.” TELL ME ABOUT YOUR SPORTY FAMILY “My husband Gary played semiprofessional football for Accrington Stanley, Doncaster and Morecombe football clubs. My daughter Raia reached National level in rhythmic gymnastics and my son Jayden is doing really well at Polanens Athletics and Santa Pola football club.” Jayden recently finished 1st in the 1000m Santa Pola Mini Marathon.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME? “I enjoy walking and keeping fit. I also enjoy crafting and creating gifts for friends and family. In addition, our family pets, Kobie the cat and our dog Milo, keep us busy and entertained.” Heather is one of the most humble people I have been fortunate enough to meet since moving to GA. She is a machine when it comes to fitness; she is a superwoman juggling her own business, being a mother and wife and is so modest when it comes to her own incredible achievements and those of her beautiful family. Thank you so much Heather for sharing your story and your gorgeous photos with us. I wish you and your family continued success and good fortune in the future.

Playa del Albir, just a perfect day Now that spring has arrived we thought that it was time to turn our attention to the crowning glory of our neighbourhood - the magnificent coastline with its wide beaches and plunging cliffs. As the weather turns warmer and the sea settles people will return to the delights of our world famous Costa Blanca. Time then for us to write about one of our favourite towns on the coast, Albir.
hilltop high above the sea and one might suppose that it would be Altea that would have captured our hearts with its pretty winding streets, chic boutiques and classic spanish restaurants. However, one doesn’t necessarily always want chic, quaint or classic at the seaside and so it is with Altea; a visit can leave one feeling somehow a little let down and that is where Albir comes into its own… Albir packs a big punch because it manages to combine several treats in one location and it works extremely hard to please its visitors. Firstly, there is the obvious attraction of its long, low flat town beach which isn’t just a practical place to put down a towel for a few hours but has been turned into a proper social space with a life all of its own. Running along the beach paseo are a slew of funky and comfortable lounge
Albir is one of the resorts that pepper the coast north of Benidorm. In summer these seaside towns, beach villages and marinas run like a string of jewels along the shimmering blue of the mediterranean; Albir, Altea, Mascarat, Calpe, Cap Blanc, Moraira, el Portet … everyone has their favourite. For us it's Albir that offers the best combination of attractions. Nestled in the crook of a rocky headland (Serra Gelada) the little town of Albir stretches north along the shore until it seamlessly merges into its more famous and glamorous neighbour town of Altea. Famous Altea is renowned for its historic white painted old quarter perched on a
bars and restaurants offering a much more exotic range of food, snacks and drinks than is normal in Spanish beach resorts; a definite attempt has been successfully made to widen the offering away from the normal Spanish or British Costa Blanca food one still finds in all too many beach resorts. It is entirely possible to spend the entire day drifting from bar to bar sampling inventive cocktails and asian fusion cuisine whilst people-watching at the varied flow of humanity passing along the pavements; if that sounds a little decadent, well isn’t
that what beach resorts are for? The paseo even has its own movie “walk of fame” with bronze stars set into the marble pavement, a testament to the annual Spanish language film festival that takes place in the town, Festival de Cine de l'Alfàs del Pi. Many of the major Spanish film makers and stars have their own plaque. It is perhaps quite telling that the stars honoured tend towards the arthouse end of cinema and
this is typical of Albir’s ability to stylishly carry off quite a tacky thing like a “walk of fame” with a twist of sophistication. For those people able to drag themselves away from the beachfront bars and celebrity pavement the town offers other, different, attractions. Head south through the town and towards the headland that rises up like a great green wall. This is the Parque Natural de la Serra Gelada and is a protected natural space criss-crossed by walking paths. Follow the old road to the lighthouse through tunnels and past worked out mines to step back in time to a wilder and undeveloped landscape. The walk to the lighthouse takes about an hour and offers incredible views over the coast and sea. Perhaps the most precious thing that the parque offers is the chance to step away from the development and bustle of the coast and discover what it was that first made our coast famous and sought after; its immense natural beauty. Properly restored by the power of nature one is finally ready to end the day with another of Albir’s little surprises; one of the best sunset vantage points on the coast. The rooftop bar of the Hotel Sun Palace Albir has a great menu of classic cocktails, a resident DJ and fantastic views over the towers of Benidorm; no better place to watch the sun sink after another perfect day of lotus eating. Albir offers the visitor a great combination of things to do and see with wonderful food and drink thrown into the mix, So if you are wondering where to spend a day at the seaside we invite you to consider Albir.

What is Silver Swans? The Royal Academy of Dance developed Silver Swans in response to a growing demand for ballet classes for older learners. These classes are delivered exclusively by Silver Swans Licensees accredited by the Royal Academy of Dance. Licensees are located all around the world and Verity is the only Silver Swans Licensee in Alicante. Classes are for older learners of any ability and although targeted at those aged over 55, there is no upper or lower age limit to be a Silver Swan. These classes will help to improve coordination, mobility, posture and energy levels. Most importantly, these classes are an opportunity to have fun and enjoy a sense of wellbeing that dance brings. Why did you choose to become a Silver Swans Licensee? I was part of the first pilot stage of the Silver Swans initiative when I was working for the Royal Academy of Dance in 2016. Before moving to Gran Alacant, I delivered Silver Swans classes in East Sussex to over 60 participants each week where I witnessed ladies falling in love with dance and making new long-term friendships. I am excited
to now start Silver Swans classes in Gran Alacant and see the benefits that it brings to our community. What do some of the participants say about GA Silver Swans? “At the age of nearly 70 I was dubious about going. My first lesson was great and I felt relaxed. Verity was very reassuring and encouraging”. “I am enjoying coming to silver swans. It’s fun and meeting new people- it is exercise, but fun”. “This is truly a great and fun way to exercise body and mind. I would encourage anyone who is interested to join and find your inner ballet dancer!” If you are ready to release your inner Swan and would like to find out more, contact Verity via: gasilverswans gasilverswans@gmail.com

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
WHINCHAT
of my photo this month, the Whinchat, which does not breed in our area.
The annual miracle which is spring migration is now well underway. The statistics are quite staggering, with billions of birds making the hazardous move from Africa
Bryan Thomas and I were rather ecstatic when we found this handsome chappie on farmland near La Marina last month. It's a smart male bird, the female is somewhat duller, about the size of a Robin and is similar to the Stonechat, which is a common resident of our area. They are fairly solitary birds and you are unlikely to see them in flocks. They have a habit, as this one is doing, of perching in an elevated position from where they sally forth to catch flying insects or grubs on the ground, and return to the same perch in the manner of the Flycatcher, to which they are distantly related.
northwards to their breeding grounds, many having to cross the vast wastes of the Sahara Desert on their way to Europe, and having crossed this obstacle it makes sense to avoid the long trek across the Mediterranean. There are three major routes which the birds may chose – eastwards up the coast of Israel and Lebanon, the short crossing from Libya to the heel of Italy, and of course the even shorter route crossing the Med at the Straits of Gibraltar. This makes the Iberian Peninsula an important flyway for many species, and at this time just about anything can be found anywhere! Not all the birds which arrive in Spain during this time are destined to stay here and breed, many of them are just taking the opportunity of resting and refuelling here before continuing their journey northwards. This is the time for birders in Spain to see the more northerly species on their way through, such as Willow and Wood Warblers, Pied Flycatchers and the subject
The Whinchat breeds in open rough grassy country and newly-planted conifer plantations, often at height, so is most likely to be found in hilly areas of the UK such as the Pennines, the Lake District and the highlands of Wales and Scotland. It is amazing to realise that this bird was wintering in the Sahel area in mid-Africa a few weeks ago, and in a few more weeks will be inhabiting windswept uplands a few thousand miles north of us. There will still be a few of them passing through during May, and they won't be seen again until they undertake the reverse migration in September and October. The name comes from the Old English word 'Whin', meaning Gorse or Furze, and the 'Chat' comes from its hard call. The Spanish name is Tarabilla Norteña, which means chatterbox or very appropriately, feather-brained! You can see more photos of our local wildlife by visiting https://marketheridge.smugmug.com/

CLAIMING OUR RIGHTS AT MADRID professional activity - prescriptions, medical records… everything must be accounted for and revised. On top of that, apart from working strictly in animal health, we also cooperate with the Government: animal registration via microchip, disease control via vaccination, verification of notifiable diseases, pets passports, import-export certificates and more other kinds of bureaucracy, etc.
Last Sunday, April the 3rd, there was a demonstration of Veterinarians in Madrid. The media did not catch wind of this, even less of which were the vindications of the Spanish veterinarians. We never talk about politics here, but we believe the reasons of the veterinarians are important for all animal owners. During the pandemic, veterinary practices stayed open and Vets were considered essential workers. We were necessary for keeping pets in Spain healthy, and thus the health of their owners.
On the other hand, the taxes we have to pay do not correspond to those of other healthcare professionals, like doctors and dentists for example. Sanitary work in Spain pays 0% VAT, while veterinarians must pay 21%. We do not have a reduced VAT type, such as 4 or 10% despite we are essential workers. Every time you pay your veterinarian, the 21% of the bill is VAT, which we must pay in our quarterly rental declaration, on top of other taxes. The main claim at Madrid demonstration was “We are veterinarians, we are healthcare workers”. In Spain, unlike other EU countries, being a Vet does not imply social recognition.
We, small companion pets veterinary surgeons, protest because, we are in an unclear legal status.
Everybody likes veterinarians; they are good people who love animals, but their work is not recognized as healthcare that protects people and environmental welfare, which is why we want to insist on the fundamental role of the veterinary profession in public health, on the control of actual and future diseases which might paralyze the world, such as NCoV – which is also a zoonotic disease, like many other ones Vets are used to treat.
On the one hand, we are healthcare workers and for that reason we are subjected to a close surveillance on our
There are a handful of campaigns to help us veterinarians with just a signature. Lend us a hand, if you don’t mind.
Of course, veterinarians working in sanitary inspection - farms and the likes - were also on duty. Nobody would doubt about how essential those jobs are. Without them, there just would be no food on our plates.

GA RUNNING GROUP
THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS In April, Claudia and Brigitte ran their first ever marathon event. In training they have run the 42km distance but never have they competed at an official event so this was a new experience for them. After a gap of 2 years due to Covid restrictions the Hanover Marathon was one of the first major events to take place and was the biggest running event in Lower Saxony.
This was the 30th anniversary of the hosting of the event and this year it also incorporated the German Marathon Championships with qualification to the European Championships, so a strong field was expected. Additionally, on the day, the event also included a marathon relay, a half marathon, 10km run, 10km walk and other fun events. With temperatures of 20c in the days leading up to the event expectations were high for good weather and a large turn-out of spectators but, and this is Germany, on the morning of the event the temperature was as low as 3c. 18,472 runners took part in the full marathon and hopefully they were prepared for the very cold conditions. Along the course the runners were supported by DJs and Samba bands which encouraged Brigitte to stop for a little dance, however, the cold weather deterred a lot of spectators from attending and being treated to Brigitte dancing the samba. For those spectators who did attend they created a fantastic atmosphere and one banner in particular stood out for them “PAIN FADESPRIDE REMAINS” which for every runner of this distance means a lot. Claudia finished the course in an excellent time of 3 hours 58 mins 25 seconds with Brigitte finishing in a time of 5 hours and 57 seconds, presumably due to her samba dancing along the route. It was so cold at the finish they didn’t hang around too
long but just long enough to take in a few bananas and (nonalcoholic) beer before departing to the hotel for a much deserved hot shower and delicious meal. I asked Claudia what her immediate plans were now they had run the marathon to which she replied, “To relax”. I don’t see that happening as they are running the Guardamar Half Marathon (21k) on 8th May, where hopefully it will be warmer than Hanover. Bravo to you ladies for a great run. Geoff was recently in Jamaica where he hoped to enjoy some relaxed running. Regrettably there was no sign of Usain Bolt but one day, whilst wearing his Gran Alacant Runners shirt, he was approached by a couple from Scotland asking him if he lived in Gran Alacant. The couple in question were John and Helen Black, who, it turns out, have lived across the road (Avda Polonia) from Geoff for 15 years and remarkably have never met. There will be a few beers drunk in the Jolly Roger when next we meet up.
Having suffered from cold, icy conditions, Staffan is now enjoying running in the warm spring weather and has now completed 46 consecutive days of running. Keep it going Staffan. Good news from Philippe, after many months of resting from running and 6 months of Cross Fit exercise, his knee is feeling better and he has started to run twice a week. We wish you well with your recovery Philippe.
