Dreadful Graffiti
I wondered if you could speak to our Councilor about the issue of the graffiti that has sprung up on the grey wall that the promotor of Bahia Playa has installed next to the N332. It looks dreadful. It is not the best welcome to our Urbanisation. Have you received any complaints about it?
Thanks
Helen
Reply from Oscar Valenzuela
As far as I am aware, the culprits have been caught and received a fine. The grey wall is the responsibility of The Ministry of Roads and we will make them aware of this issue and ask them to get them cleaned up.
Avda. Mediterraneo
I have attached photos of an area on Avenue Mediterraneo on the slope heading down to Carrabassi beach. It has turned into such an eyesore! I have sent pictures previously but nothing has been done to improve this area, the neglect is astonishing! It is on a road that is used all the time by tourists and gives such a bad impression of GA.
Keep up the great work you do with the magazine.
Best regards
Fiona

Thank you for your email and photos. We have visited the location ourselves and made a short video for Oscar to see. We forwarded your photos and our video to the councillor for gardening and cleaning and we are hoping to see the location improved soon.
School Bus Route
I write to you regarding the situation of the school bus route through Gran Alacant. At the moment the buses come up Ave Escandinavia, turn at the BBVA bank then drive along Calle de Monte Santa Pola. I do not feel this road is suitable for school buses. Would it not be safer for them to come up Escandinavia, turn in at the new market place and have the drop off/pick up in the safety of the car park. I am just thinking of the children’s safety.
Thanks
James
Can you please press Councillor Oscar Valenzuela
to get the council, or whoever is responsible, to clear this area and put a permanent solution in place to stop the weeds continuing to grow? The rubbish and weeds will continue to gather, if nothing is done to improve the area.
Reply from Oscar Valenzuela
We are going to start building the new school after Easter holidays. Once the school is finished, a new traffic system will be put into place with a separate bus line making the traffic safer and more efficient for everyone.
THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA
COMMUNICATION MAST
The communication mast installed at the market place parking lot is finally up and running.
At present Movistar is the only operator that has installed communication lines inside so it will only mean an increase in coverage for residents who use that service.
We will continue to contact all operators and encourage them to install communication equipment. We would however encourage residents to ask their provider to supply and install the necessary service.
NEW POLICE STATION
Construction work has started in front of the Commercial Centre to build the new local Police Station. The budget for this work is 118,000e with an expected timeframe for completion of works in only 4 months.
We welcome an increased police presence to the area.
NEW SCHOOL
Gran Alacant awaits the imminent start of the works to build the second school.
The work has been awarded to the company ACCONIA for a total of 12.5 million euros. The second school will be located in the Monte Faro urbanization and the construction works for the new center will last approximately 18 months. The City Council must undertake the roads and urbanization of the area, once the school has been built.
The center is expected to have 2 classrooms for 2 year olds, 9 classrooms for Infants and 18 for Primary. Among the services will be a dining room, library or gym, as well as pedagogical support classrooms for subjects such as music or computing.
LATEST NEWS FROM
ASPHALTING PLAN
Work is underway on the Asphalting plan for Gran Alacant. Roads are being resurfaced, speed humps installed and a traffic park is being created.
The budget for this work is 125,000e and expected timeframe for completion is 3 weeks.
New speed bumps have been installed around GA for safety crossings and to reduce the speed of vehicles in the area.
A new Traffic Park is also being created.

The Lowedown with Lynne
INTERVIEW with Cindy & Colin Bedford
Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 6 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories.
This month’s interview is with Cindy and Colin Bedford. They bought their property in GA off plan in 2001. In 2020, they officially became Spanish residents.
WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO GA?
Cindy “We came to Spain on an inspection holiday for 3 days. We were shown 2 locations each day and out of all they places they showed us we liked GA best. It appealed to us because it was so close to the airport, had a lovely beach and was a small town.
We bought off plan in 2001 and initially used it as a holiday home. We would visit every school holiday with our 2 sons Lee and Ross. When we retired, it became our main residence. Now our 3 grandchildren Alfie (19), Ross (18) and Amber (9) come to visit us during their holidays.”
WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE BEFORE GA?
Cindy “We lived in Greater London. I was a teacher and taught Maths and ICT, I worked as Vice Principal in a pastoral role which meant that I was in charge of behaviour, special needs and child protection. I loved working with children and trying to make a positive impact in their lives.”
DID YOU WORK WITH “CHALLENGING” CHILDREN?
Cindy “I did a lot of youth work in areas where Children had a lot of behavioural issues. A 14-year-old boy once slapped my face but other than that incident, I never felt uneasy working there. These young people tended to look after their own and
I’d often have them say ‘Don’t worry miss, I’ll walk you down the road’ to make sure I got home safely.”
After her first teaching role in a tough South East London comprehensive school she moved to a less behavioural challenging school. She describes the experience as “Totally different. I actually preferred working with the children with the behavioural issues as I felt they were more genuine. What you saw is what you got”. This is the reason she took up the role as Vice Principal in her 3rd school.
COLIN, WHAT DID YOU DO?
“I left school at 16 and got an apprenticeship working in dental technology. I decided after a year that the long hours and poor pay were not for me. My uncle suggested working for Royal Mail and I worked my way through the ranks for 49 years until I retired. I worked as a Telegram Boy, Postman, Postman Driver, Postman Higher Grade, Floor Manager and in the Post Office Investigation Branch which has actually been in operation longer than the Police Force.“
ARE THERE ANY INVESTIGATIONS THAT STICK IN YOUR MIND?
“One case I worked on was based around the Kings Road area of London. There was a person riding a bicycle around stealing bundles of mail from Postmen’s trolleys. The operation was set up, with me being a lot fitter back then, the Senior Investigation officer got yours truly on a fold-up bicycle. The suspect came out of the address and walked up to the Kings Road to the bus stop. The bus came along and the suspect boards the bus. I relayed the information over the radio to the team and the immortal words came back ‘follow that bus’. Usually the Kings Road is one large traffic jam but on that day the bus went away like Hamilton off the grid. I kept up for a while but the bus disappeared from view and unfortunately the case was never solved.”
HOW DID YOU MEET?
Cindy “We met in a pub. I had gone to invite my friend to my 18th Birthday Party and Colin was there. I ended up inviting Colin to my party too. We were engaged 3 weeks later! Colin was very respectful and asked my Mum’s permission first then told his own Mum and Dad. We have been married for 49 years and together for 51 years.”
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF EACH OTHER?
Cindy “I thought Colin was tiny and looked really young, turns out there’s only 3 months age gap between us.”
Colin “I remember thinking Cindy was really friendly and I liked that we got on so well.”
WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT EACH OTHER?
Colin “I love that we just get on.” After Colin goes off on a little tangent, Cindy presses him for an answer. Colin replies simply “I love you because you are YOU. Because you are always there for me”.
Cindy “I love Colin’s laid back attitude to life, even if I do have a go at him in the morning for being so slow”.
HOW DO YOU KEEP BUSY?
Cindy “We used to be heavily into golf for over 20 years. We were both Club Captains. Nowadays we are members of the Monte Mar Bowling Club.
We are always looking for new members both Bowling and Social so if you are interested please come along to a roll up session on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday at 10am”.
Colin “We enjoy travelling too. I fulfilled my childhood ambition to drive Route 66.”
BEST THING ABOUT LIVING IN GA?
Every day is a HOLIDAY!
. Thank you Cindy & Colin

Citrus garden
Winter is orange time in the Valencian Community and we were lucky enough to join a guided tour of the most important citrus fruit collection in Spain and possibly in the world - the Fundacion Todoli (https:// todolicitrusfundacio.org) in the town of Palmeras just south of Gandia. The tour was organised by the Costa Blanca branch of the wonderful Mediterranean Garden Society (https://www.mediterraneangardensociety. org/).
The Fundacion Todoli maintains a six hectare site dedicated to collecting and preserving examples of the thousands of varieties of citrus plants that exist. Aside from the obvious oranges and lemons the foundation cultivates limes, pomelos, pummelos, bergamots, grapefruits, mandarins, clementines, kumquats, tangerines and many other varieties of Asian, European and American citrus. The foundation currently claims to have around 400 different varieties under cultivation, a substantially larger number of varieties than other equivalent citrus collections in Southern France.
We were privileged to have a three hour tour of the growing areas interspersed with tasting sessions to try different varieties of the fruit. The tour was led by the founder of the collection, Vicente Todoli, who built the collection on the site of his former family fruit farm. The foundation site now boasts a small museum and trial kitchen facility. Vicente skillfully explained the history of citrus cultivation both in Europe and Asia and its economic and cultural importance. The foundation offers a probably unique opportunity to taste and smell a rare array of citrus fruits from all over the world whilst having an expert to show how to appreciate the fruit. Vicente’s family have been growing citrus on the site for several generations and one suspects that he may indeed have orange juice flowing in his
veins such is his passion for citrus! Vicente’s charm and engaging down-to-earth manner made the three hour visit fly past. One came away having learned a huge amount about the botany, history, economics and even art of citrus cultivation.
However, perhaps it should have come as no surprise that Vicente Todoli is such a skilled tour guide: For he is also one of the most important and successful international public art gallery directors of his generation. This unassuming Valencian was the first Director appointed to run the Tate Modern gallery in London following its establishment as a separate gallery. He was the director of Tate Modern from 2003 to 2010, the crucial period when it established itself as one of the world’s great public art institutions. We were both living in London at that time and like almost all Londoners from that time vividly remember the extraordinary impact that shows like Olafur Eliasson’s “Weather Project” (remembered as the “Tate Sun”) had. To a great extent it is possible to credit Vicente Todoli with establishing Tate Modern as such a huge success during those years. When he stood down from the directorship in 2010 he was described in an editorial in the Guardian as one whose “curiosity,
Follow us on Instagram: juanruano.oficial & archiemaddan
wit, rigour and passion make him a model for future directors of Tate Modern” ; high praise indeed from a national newspaper editorial.
Those gifts are now employed by Vicente to develop the foundation that bears his name (he has handed over ownership of his family land to an independent foundation thatwill
preserving historic varieties of citrus plants and encouraging wider knowledge and
continue his work). The foundation has developed a small commercial operation to provide funding for its work and we came away from our tour with a few jars of their bespoke marmalades, which will be saved to accompany good cheeses! The foundation is also developing links to supply specialty fruits to restaurants, including back in Vicente’s old home city of London. Above all however, Vicente and his colleagues at the foundation are passionate about
appreciation of these remarkable fruits. At a time when the world’s biodiversity is under huge threat his work has added importance; if these varieties are lost from active cultivation we will all be poorer in so many ways. Vicente’s former life as a leading gallerist shows through in the fact that the foundation is also building an expanded museum to display its growing collection of art and artefacts related to the history of citrus cultivation and use; this is surely to become a “Tate Citrus” a place of wonder and learning about all things citrus. There can surely be no more appropriate location for such a project than in the heartland of Spanish orange growing in Comunitat Valenciana. Visiting Vicente Todoli’s passion project was both a pleasure and a privilege, we wish him and his colleagues every success for the future; given his extraordinary track record we suspect we will be hearing much more about Fundacion Todoli in years to come!

LEY DE PROTECCIÓN ANIMAL (ANIMAL PROTECTION ACT) & MORE ...
Last month “Ley de Bienestar Animal de la Comunidad Valenciana” has been passed. This is not the famous Spanish Animal Protection Act, which is still in process.
Both laws talk about animal protection, and they are very similar, but there are small differences. Besides, some aspects of both laws haven’t been developed yet. A good example would be the formation course for dogs owners, which will be mandatory in the future: at this moment its contents are not established yet.
In this article, we are going to concentrate on the Valencian law, because it’s in force at the moment. Like in so many other laws, its effects are not immediate: there is a 6 months term in order to get updated about all new regulations the new law introduces.
What’s new in Valencian Animal Welfare Act? The most important things are:
Every dog, cat an ferret must be chipped, even if they are not going to cross the border. Remember so far chipping was optional in cats and ferrets which were not going to leave Spain. Cats and ferrets owners have a 6 months term to update their animals, and the fact that “it never goes out” is not a valid excuse. And besides, feral cats colonies are not excluded.
Every cat older than 6 months which is not going to be used for breeding must be neutered. In this case, the Spanish law says “every cat which is allowed to be outdoors”, so it’s too soon to know which one will be finally the regulation that will prevail.
Purchasing animals from pet shops is forbidden. The only valid way to purchase them will be through a legally registered professional breeder. What they want is to stop the uncontrolled breeding without any sanitary warranty from non-professional clandestine breeders. Of course, non-profit adoptions from animal shelters keep 100% legal.
Hamsters, rabbits, budgies, lovebirds, etc, ARE valid pets, as we wrote at our previous article “Lies, alt-right and Guinea pigs”.
Venomous arthropods, fishes or reptiles are totally forbidden. In case of non-venomous reptiles, all those ones with an adult weight heavier than 2 kg (EXCEPT TORTOISES!!) are also forbidden.
In case of death of a chipped animal, it must be reported to RIVIA (local microchips database) in less than 3 days. In case of loss, you are also obliged to report RIVIA and/or Police in less than 72 hours as well. If you are late, you are supposed to be abandoning the pet.
About euthanasia, the reasons for performing it get dramatically limited. From this moment, old age (just the age), getting tired of the pet, not having enough room, etc, are no longer valid reasons. The only valid reason would be the irreversible loss of quality of life. This fact is not new for us since it appears in our professional deontological code, but the good thing is from this moment the fact that this appears in a law makes things easier, in order to avoid situations like the one we had some weeks ago: a property in the campo had been sold, and neither the new owner nor the old one wanted the dog that lived at the property, so they both decided it was a good idea to put it to sleep. The dog was taken to our practice, and after an exploration we noticed its only health problem was deafness, and apart from that, the animal was in perfect condition, so, obviously, we refused to perform the euthanasia. Despite it’s not very common, it’s not the first time it happens, because, unfortunately, in some cases, comfort is more relevant than animal live. Now we have an additional legal tool to do what has to be done (and not to do what shouldn’t be done).
We’ll keep solving doubts in further articles as the legal regulations are developed.

GRAN
A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have their own Elche CF supporters club to attend home games at the stadium and watch away games in local bars around Gran Alacant.
Difficulty Rating: EASY
Home games see the group move around different bars in Gran Alacant as their meeting place, with bars used this season including London Tavern, Jolly Roger, Naty’s, Shooters, and The Pub, while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill.
To solve the puzzle each 3 x 3 box, each row and each column must contain all the numbers 1 to 9. While the rules of this logic puzzle may be simple, there are numerous strategies to help you solve Sudoku.
From there, the group arranges carsharing to get up to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to Gran Alacant afterwards.
For hints and information visit www.sudoku.org.uk
Travel to the ground is problematic with no easy public transport links. With the group sharing driving duties, the group has managed to shift larger groups of fans to games.
Difficulty Rating: MEDIUM
Tickets are always easy to come by via the club website at www.elchecf.es and
there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.
Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the actual date and time of the match to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand. Home games in May are against Atletico Madrid (weekend of 14 May) and Sevilla (weekend of 24 May).
GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY
GAGS are now back to playing twice a week, Tuesday and Friday at 8am. We are looking forward to meeting up with our regular players and welcoming new members whether they be residents or visitors.
SOCIETY DETAILS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
Where: El Plantio Golf Resort. The official address is A-79, Km3, 03114, Alicante.
Difficulty Rating: HARD
When: the formal Society Day is Tuesdays weekly when all golfers are most welcome. In addition we have an informal get together every Friday which has always been a Gentleman’s Day.
Time: on both days normally 8am so please be there by 7.40am. Occasionally the Starter may request we change the time so unless you are a regular golfer it would be best to check with us beforehand.
Cost: usually €50 per round at peak times to include a buggy plus €1.50 mandatory insurance charge. It can sometimes be cheaper during less busy, off peak seasons. In addition the Society requires €5 sweep money which is all paid out at the end of the round.
