We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Here are his suggestions of “Where to visit” and ‘What to see” for this month
Hi everybody
After Easter Week, there will be parades of Moors and Christians in Petrer from 11th to 15th and in Salinas from 26 to 30th. Biar - my favourite, little, beautiful village celebrates its parade on the 10th of May. Like every year, many things happen on this day. First the parade of Moors and Christians, then a little later, they make fires on the surrounding hills and finish with fireworks. The final act on this day is to attend the main church to see what happens in there. Also, there are other specials events like the one held in Torrevieja 10th of May to 14th called “Feria de Mayo” or in Monforte del Cid - Orito another popular pilgrimage called “Romería de San Pascual”. Also “Las Cruces de Mayo” - “Cross of May”. Crosses are made with flowers in many squares in different towns and villages in the Costa Blanca. On the 18th there is the whole day with a guided tour in English to the Salt Museum in the morning and Aquarium and fish auction in the afternoon. It’s vital to register at least one day in advance at Tourist info offices – please phone 966 696 052 to book your tickets. From 2nd to 4th June - there is an International Karate Tournament held in Santa Pola. That’s all for now friends. Hello Everybody, Warmer weather finaly appeared just in time for Easter holidays. Holiday makers arrived in Gran Alacant, traffic and people everywhere. It was nice to see the place buzzing again. Everybody was enjoying hot temperatures, the beach was packed on Easter Monday during the day and with good acts and entertainment provided by local businesses in the evenings. Also, there was a great atmosphere all around Gran Alacant on St.George’s day with plenty of live entertainment. It was nice to see all nationalities enjoying the day. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 9. Casper is a fairly recent addition to our household, and you can read more about him on page 111.

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Avda. Mediterraneo Hi Ged & Lou, Hope you are both keeping well. Please consider asking yet another question for me. Avda de Mediterraneo is a long, long road. Unfortunately the bottom half seems to be forgotten. The road surface, which as you can see from my photos, is quite quickly rising above the pavement and could be dangerous.
Now that the bushes on the side are even more over the pavement it wont be long before us pedestrians will have to get into the road as well. To save you any more bother could you please tell me how to contact someone from the council to try and get them to see how urgent this matter is. The electricity boxes appear to have their front doors stolen, exposing all the wires inside. Surely this cannot be safe. I am attaching some recent photos. Thanks for your time and your great magazine. Ann Patterson TOWN HALL ANSWER: Related to the current state of Avda del Mediterraneo (both the road surface and the electricity boxes), both Electrical Services and Works Services have been informed about. Furthermore, this complaint is also transferred to the Infrastructure Councillor, so as he can solve, as soon as possible, this security problem for the pedestrians.
The other day we watched a man on his mobility scooter almost tip over as he went round the curve upwards and had to stay right into the kerb side to allow any traffic coming up behind him who would have a blind spot before they saw him. It was very frightening for all of us.

Q: Pavements Avda.Escandinavia Hi Lou & Ged, I am attaching pics of pavement, health & safety issue indeed! Also the eyesore all residents of this urbanisation have to 'suffer' each time they leave... I know,

because it's fenced off, that some builder will probably own it and that they are not obliged to complete the pavements of the land has not been used for building... Hence, all the more need for 'safe' pavements at the other side! Also, is it not possible for the council to get the company who own the land to at least tidy it up a bit? Helen TOWN HALL ANSWER: We are going to solve this problem because between the fence and the pavement itself, I think it is possible to pave in order to achieve the security which we all need at Gran Alacant. Q: Rubbish at the Carabassi Roundabout
I am messaging you at the suggestion of a couple of your readers and contributorsas I know if I went to the council I would get nowhere! It's concerning the everincreasing rubbish barrier by the Carabassi roundabout close to the allotments .I presume fly tipping is legal in Spain as it is an almost daily occurrence there. We recently watched a white transit dumping stuff for 20 minutes, such big was his load. Apart from it being unsightly we have noticed more rats lately, could be a
coincidence I know, but, noticeably during that torrential rain storm on the 12th March it was acting as a dam to the flood water trying to drain off the Carabassi - part submerging the roundabout and stopping all traffic. No doubt the backed up water affected the drain and sewers, fragile at the best of times. It needs to be cleared and a chain barrier put in place, as they have done to the entrance up the hill, to prevent vehicle access from the road. Are you able to put this to the council or whoever, who will no doubt say it MASA land & vice versa and deny responsibility. I think the water authority might be concerned also. If you can then many thanks from several Med111 residents. Jacqueline B. TOWN HALL ANSWER: This complaint has been transferred both to the Infrastructure Councillor and to the public health Department, which is in charge of informing the company which works about mosquitoes and rats. Q: Rubbish and pavements on Calle Malta Hi Ged, Lou & Helen, No matter what the counsel say in their replies, generally nothing happens! I ask why do we waste our time writing? As Ged & Lou know I have complained about rubbish in my area for over 18 months, asking for the counsel to remove it, max time 1hour. They said they would visit me so I could show them where the problem is nothing, no visit. Then they said they would arrange for Ged & I to talk to the people who are contracted to clean up the area amongst other things. That was supposed to be about 6 months ago, what happened, nothing!! But why should we have to complain and discuss with the contractor their failure to do the

job we pay them for, surely the counsel should meet with the contractor and tell them to do the job they are contracted to do or refuse to pay them for not doing what they are contracted to do and get someone who does the job to a professional standard. Yes counsellors you give the contracts to these people & you should ensure they do the work, someone needs a kick up the backside and I know whom I would kick. Just another point, late March they trimmed the overgrown grass on the right coming down Av Carabassi, the trimming stops before the bins at the no overtaking sign so its not progressed any further, why?
Pictures of weeds covering the pavement on Calle Malta:
Calle Malta – urgently needs resurfacing:
Calle Malta has now lots of overgrown grass and weeds spreading over the footpath, you have to walk on the road in places. I am sure its bad in many other places too, now isn't that dangerous, contravening health and safety laws as are the many broken paving tiles all around GA. Please get your act together Santa Pola Counsel. I am with you Helen got some big boots? Regards Bill Rubbish on Calle Malta: TOWN HALL ANSWER: Regarding to this hot issue, from the Town Council there have been several contacts with the company which is in charge of the cleaning in Santa Pola and in Gran Alacant. However, there are formal methods in order to complaint, such as a signed letter which has to be registered at the Town Hall (either at Santa Pola offices or at Gran Alacant office). Once again, this problem has been transferred to the Infrastructure Councillor, including the pictures, and I hope this will be enough to solve this very

annoying problem, because I understand this is upsetting for the neighbours. Nevertheless, this is a problem which is caused by a lack of civism and education. UPDATE FROM BILL: Hi Lou & Ged, not sure if you have met with the councillor yet but today they have started to trim the weeds on Calle Malta, so if you have already had words, just wanted to say thank you. First time in about 3 years at least since they trimmed the weeds down there. Keep up the good work might even re surface the road one day. Thanks again. Best regards, Bill
BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: Lovely to see Lou and Ged making such a success of this magazine, which they bought from myself and Sandra in November 2015. 120 pages last month. Lots of hard work and dedication. Lovely for us to see it in such good hands. Q: Weeds on Avda.Noruega Why are they not use weed killer on weeds growing between the lovely stones on Avda.Noruega Instead of cutting them down? TOWN HALL ANSWER: The technician who is in charge of the green areas in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant thinks is both cheaper and safer not to use chemicals (weed killers), and thus, the best option is to cut them off. Q: Mosquitoes: Have they sprayed yet for mosquitoes? TOWN HALL ANSWER: There have been several actions regarding to the mosquitoes this year, but with all the rain that we had two months ago, it is difficult to foresee whether these actions have done their duty. However, there are more provided actions by the company which is in charge of the control
of mosquitoes.
Q: Gran Alacant Entrance Sign When will we get a new Gran Alacant sign on the entrance to the urbanisation, from Santa Pola? The one there now looks awful. Not good with holiday visitors coming here on their holidays!!! TOWN HALL ANSWER: Yes, good news! We are in the final process of getting pictures and text for the new entrance sign to Gran Alacant. Q: Entrance Roundabout: I saw a motorcyclist knocked off his motorbike on the first roundabout onto Gran Alacant. It is so dangerous there with 3 exits so close together. Can the Town Hall come up with a resolution? Barry Few months ago, one of our readers Ann Patterson suggested a very good idea of a one way system which was to be studied by the traffic technician, can the Town Hall give us an update? TOWN HALL ANSWER: I have transferred this suggestion to the traffic technician, who has told me that he is still studying this issue, and many others at Gran Alacant. When he tells me any more news about that, I will be in touch with you in order to inform. ********** There is a man who has been around GA for several years pretending he has been locked out of his house and getting money off people for a new door lock. ********** Time and time again we have reported in this magazine, record after record numbers coming through the airport at Alicante. Nearly 5 million seats have been reserved to visit in the next year. ********** 21st March was a bit of a sad day on Gran Alacant. First trip was for our usual morning coffee at Hispania. The bar was broken into overnight and all of the slot machines raided after breaking through the front door causing much damage. Then at 5pm we were at the funeral of our dear friend Karen Webster, who was very well known for helping many people buy or sell their houses from her at GA-Homefinders. *********** A helicopter flying very very low, over our home, near to the GA school, alerted us to an accident in a ravine going up the hill from the fountain roundabout. A Norwegian lady had fallen whilst out walking, so police, fire brigade, and ambulance were soon on the scene to transport her to the local hospital. ********** N332 Yolanda Seva, Mayor of Santa Pola, has confirmed that she is working to get changes to the exit from the N332 into Santa Pola at the old hotel corner. So many accidents and deaths are being recorded at this very dangerous junction.
neighbours, and businessmen of the area of the concerns generated by the fact that the building has asbestos in its pillars. A specialised company will dismantle the effected areas, and assure residents that all will take place with expertise. ********** In January 2016 the news came out in the media in the area that Gran Alacant would have a second school after many years of vindication. The Education Minister Vicent Marzà then published the Conselleria's resolution on educational infrastructures until 2019. It was stated that in the first half of 2017 work would begin on the new centre in Santa Pola. However, later, the situation of this school was taking a turn. After a meeting in Valencia with José García, Deputy Director of Educational Infrastructures, the Santa Pola education councillor, Loli Tomás, has confirmed that the construction will be delayed until at least 2019. *********** Brand new shopping trolleys, looks like from a local supermarket were found on Avenida Polonia. It seems someone walked up from the supermarket and dumped them by the bins. They are also locked together. How much are they worth?!!! Thoughtless mindless morons, well done!
*********** Talks are still ongoing about improving the exits from Gran Alacant onto the N332. Fingers crossed then. *********** What is left of the old hotel in Arenales will be demolished with rigour. The City of Elche does not plan to extend the security perimeter around the hotel and sent a message of total tranquillity to the

Chatter POLITICS & RELIGION I have always been told, there are two subjects you should never talk about; politics and religion. Despite this fact, there has been a lot of chatter about, just what is happening, politically, back in the United Kingdom and rightly so. Prime minister, Theresa May, finally invoked ‘Article 50’, needed to start the process of Britain’s withdrawal from the EU; it has been a long time coming and I for one, am glad the procedure is finally under way. Whether you voted Brexit or not, the uncertainty, after the vote, during the interim period, has been unwelcome. Whilst legislation was passing through Parliament, on 1 March 2017, the House of Lords defeated the Government, trying to amend the proposed ‘Article 50’ bill, by guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens, living in the UK, whilst ignoring the plight, of Ex-pats, like myself, living in Europe. What happens to Ex-pats living on the continent, after we finally leave the EU, is of immense concern for me and those who live in Gran Alacant. This was the one topic, that kept on rearing its head, this month, as all of us who live here, continued to discuss and debate, just exactly what our future holds. I have written about Brexit before, and thought it was time to approach the subject once again. I am a supporter of the House of Lords and the British Parliamentary system; It has worked well for centuries. The Lords are the conscience of the commons. If they feel MPs need to rethink, they will vote accordingly; MPs will then, further debate, any proposed changes. Checks and balances in a political system, is necessary; the House of Lords, were doing, what they felt, they needed to

do. In my opinion, they were wrong, totally misguided. Guaranteeing the rights of EU citizens, in the UK, without securing those of British Ex-pats in Europe, was foolish. As an Exp-at, we seem to have been forgotten; nobody is fighting our corner, even though we have historic ties to the UK and many of us still vote, as I did for Brexit. One, more vocal resident, told me, that ‘we are being sold up the river, used as bargaining chips, in order to get the best deal for the UK, not us, in Spain!’ He was expressive in his tone, angry that Westminster, were ignoring our plight. Speaking to people around Gran Alacant about Brexit, there does seem to be a 50/50 split; those pro Europe, those Brexiteers, mirroring the outcome of the vote in the UK. One thing is for sure, all of us, who live here, want to stay in this part of Spain. We may well hold British Passports, but many of those I have spoken to this month, have lived in this country for a decade or more. None of us truly know what is going to happen, not even the EU, but most importantly, for all Expats that live in Gran Alacant and beyond, we need assurances, that our lives, can continue, along the same path, they were travelling, before the vote. If you were to ask me, what I believe will happen, I have faith, that very little will change. As long as Europe does not seek, to punish us, for leaving and Britain does not use, our status as migrants, as a negotiating tool, we can be assured of a positive outcome. Currently, everything is speculation and conjecture, now is not the time for panic! On the 22 March 2017, Westminster, the heart of British Government, was attacked. Brexit is always on peoples minds, but this heinous act, by a lone assailant, has left people reeling, in shock, angry and perplexed. Not only those of us, who still have links to the United Kingdom, have been talking about events, on the other

side of Europe, we all have. A home grown terrorist, killing an unarmed Policeman and pedestrians on Westminster Bridge; injuring fifty more. London, seems a million miles away from Gran Alacant, but with a large British population, in this area, people’s opinions, shock and disgust is palpable, clear for all to see. Of course this kind of violence, isn’t unique to Britain, but with Brexit on the horizon, immigration, high up on all of our list of concerns, what happened, back home, was yet another reason to feel anger, towards a community, that little of us understand, unless we had been brought up, in the Muslim faith. Most of us understand, that not all Muslims are terrorists; no one can make that kind of generalisation. What is true to say, is those elders in the community, in which they represent, need to bear some responsibility, for the actions of those who use violence to further their cause. These, otherwise, law abiding citizens have been radicalised, under their very noses; subverted in Mosques, suburban homes and from the words, of those who preach the word of Allah, in a context that is skewed and used for their own distasteful ends. All of us appreciate, our right to express free will, freedom of speech and to articulate our views, sometimes firmly. What most of us do not do, is step over the threshold of human decency, committing acts of terror against people, like you and I. Muslim communities, across the World, need to stand together, root out the extremists and express a clear agenda of peace and conciliation; healing wounds opened by zealots on all sides of the argument. I am a firm believer in equality, for every person; homosexuals, women, white or black; Improving the lives of everyone, no matter who they are, should be a priority for us all. What I will not do, is support the rights of groups, religious or otherwise, who spout hatred towards others, just because of who they are. This is the twenty first century, not
the middle ages! Finally a few words about Donald Trump, that new controversial US President, who is still dividing the country he represents and a world that looks on, as he continues his tenureship at the Whitehouse. The leader of the free world is still causing waves, even here in Gran Alacant. Everyone has their own opinion of him and his policies. Of all those who have spoken to me about the new President, nobody has said how much they like President Trump, because of his dynamic personality, charm or dignity. As an individual, Mr Trump is not a character, people are immediately drawn too; in fact the opposite is true. However, most, including myself are drawn to his blunt talking, telling the world how it is; equally his determination to follow his conscience, right or wrong and for daring to say, what a lot of other people are thinking. He appeals to all of our basic instincts. My views on The President remain indifferent; I don’t expect him to be one of America’s finest, but I understand the attraction he has, especially from a disenfranchised electorate in the United States. He is not part of the establishment, or a member of the political elite; that is why he won the election; he will probably lose support, for exactly the same reasons! Forbidden topics this month, on subjects close to the hearts of many Ex-pats living in Spain. As the Brexit debate begins, all of us, living on the continent will take a close look at those who represent us. The World is a small place, what happens in Europe or the US, will have ramifications for us living on the Costa Blanca. We are no longer sheltered from what happens at home; our lives depend on political debate and negotiations; our future will be determined by how loud we are heard.

Hi, how are you? Spring has arrived and we are straight into splendid days of sun, warmth, beach, pool etc, and it is now that we remember that we should have exercised the rest of the year and we are in a hurry to get in shape! I thought maybe I could give you a couple of ideas to help get rid of the winter excess that winter clothing has been covering .. First of all adopting healthy habits is the main thing and will make us feel good rather than being a chore. Get up reasonably early in the morning and walk for between 40 min and 1 hour at a fast pace. If you haven´t exercised for a long time, it is best to do this on the flat, for example along Arenales del Sol promenade. Do this every other day then stretch the muscles well. Hydrate before, during and after exercise- it´s advisable to drink at least two litres of water a day. After stretching we can do a few sets of abs, as always taking care of the back and neck. It’s better to do these slowly, feeling the muscles work and there’s no need to do a thousand! To start with four sets of 20 is very good. On days when we don’t go for a walk we can do routines for arms and legs. So, for example: Day 1, 3 and 5: Fast walk of 40 minutes to one hour, stretching and 4 sets of 20 abs. Day 2 and 4: Leg work, standing up. If you don´t have much balance (do practice though) you can hold a chair and do lateral leg movements, 3 sets of 10 each. Another three sets of 10 lifting the leg backwards, careful as always not to injure the back, to work the glutes. And finally three sets of 15 squats, a gain with care. The correct movement of the squat is exactly that – as if you were going to sit down, your bottom goes back and ensure your knees don´t go further forward than your toes.
52
Now to work our arms - if you have dumbells, perfect, but if not you can make some with half litre water bottles filled with sand. If you want more weight, simply wet the sand. You can also use an elastic band and there is a multitude of exercises to choose from that can be done standing, sitting or even lying down. For me, the most important thing is that you know what you are working with each movement and then after that you choose how you want to do it. So let's go to it … Arm flex, with elbows glued to the body, works mainly the biceps… Elbow flex, either behind or above the head, works mainly triceps… Rowing movement with elbows back works the back … Arm lifts in front with arms half bent works the shoulders… Push ups can be done to work chest and also arms: depending on your physical condition you could do it either with knees on the ground or as The Plank (careful with your back). It takes practice but when done correctly The Plank is a complete exercise, working abs, arms, chest and also legs. With all the above exercises you could do 4 sets of 20, or if we want to tone but not reduce do 6 sets of 12 repetitions. As always, to avoid hurting yourself it’s essential that you activate your core, contracting the abdominals. After each routine elongate the muscles, doing the opposite movements we did to work them. As we mentioned in an earlier issue of this magazine, stretching is as important as physical activity. So, now you have a routine for the week which should be accompanied by a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and lots of liquid. Yes, at the weekend have a pleasant walk along the beach and eat and drink whatever you want …. but in moderation! I hope this has been useful, let me know how you get on. Two old ladies met in the supermarket. After inquiring about each other’s health, the conversation turned to their respective husbands. Oh, said one. “Bert died last week”. He went out to the garden to dig up a cabbage for dinner, had a heart attack and dropped dead in the middle of the vegetable patch”. “Oh my!” Exclaimed the other. “What did you do?” “Came here to buy a cabbage.”

COMBINATION OF MATERIALS TO ACHIEVE A PERFECT WORKTOP
WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW WHEN APPLYING WOOD TO YOUR KITCHEN COUNTER? Are you willing to perform the maintenance that the wood needs in order to be in good condition? If not, maybe you’d better choose another material whose durability in time does not need so much care. You must know‌ The worktop is a work area exposed to humidity, heat, shock ... and therefore it is highly recommended to focus on solid wood worktops such as those made of beech, oak or walnut. Tropical wood is more resistant to moisture because it contains more oils in its composition, but soft woods require more care. Any sharp object can leave permanent marks. These types of surfaces require strict maintenance to keep it intact. It is important to brush, varnish and sand if we do not want it to deteriorate. Some manufacturers subject this material to waterproofing treatment to prevent them from deforming with moisture. Wood is a very porous material and if water or any stain falls on it, it is recommended to dry it off quickly so that the stains do not penetrate into it and are impossible to eliminate.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Garden of Nations, Torrevieja Hi , my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 9 years now. My 7 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we wanted to share our adventures in the Garden of Nations, Torrevieja. Located approximately 35-40 mins away on the N332, this almost 40,000 square metre park is dedicated to the nations of Europe. We took a walk around the gardens, which are peaceful and well maintained, with water features and plenty of places to sit in and out of the shade. We enjoyed looking at the many free-roaming ducks, hens, roosters and amazing peacocks, who often had their beautiful feathers on display. Next we came across the large, approximately 6,000 square metre lake which has lots of ducks and swans and is in the shape of the European Continent. There are little bridges to walk over and a couple of small boats that you can rent to sail around the whole of Europe!!. If you are lucky you might also be able to spot some of the Koi or terrapins that call this place home. The girls really loved to see the whole Continent in one place!!!.

I CAN’T SCUBA DIVE!!!! – YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED!!!
I
am the owner of the local scuba diving centre based in the harbour in Santa Pola. Many people tell me they cannot scuba dive and couldn’t do what I do. Despite never ever trying it out some have already decided it is not for them. It seems to intrigue the majority of us, as it is perceived as extreme, adventurous, something for the bucket list. However, for whatever reason some people tell me they would never try it. Ok, most of the time it is due to a fear of sharks or maybe a fear that the equipment may malfunction. Well, Steven Spielberg with his film ‘Jaws’ made most of us even scared to paddle at the beach but the fact is more people die from being trampled by cows than shark attacks every year. Equipment? It is fail proof and as we are a certified service centre all our equipment is kept serviced and up to date. Some people don’t even know why they wouldn’t try it but unless you give it a go you will never know.
never try scuba diving. I was at a local hotel offering free try dives in the swimming pool and this lady came up to me intrigued by the scuba equipment. She said she likes the look of it and loves swimming but she is scared of fish... well... more to the point she is scared of dead fish!! When she was a child she had been snorkelling in a lake and a dead fish fell into the snorkel and blocked the airway so she couldn’t breath. Since that day she had panic attacks if she saw any fish. She wouldn’t even visit the houses of friends who had a fish tank in case one died and
I would like to share a short story about a customer that once told me she would
84
SANTA POLA
SANTA POLA she saw it. I told her not to worry as there are no fish in the swimming pool and also unlike a snorkel the equipment is not open to the air. The breathing equipment goes in your mouth and the other end is attached to a scuba tank with clean air inside. So, she decided to have a crack at it and she just loved the way she floated about effortless like she was in outer space and able to stay under the water without having to come for air.
morning and she was absolutely thrilled with her experience. She was grinning from ear to ear and we got lots of photos. I turned round and noticed something at the surface floating above her head..... only a little dead fish!!! I quickly pointed to the seabed at a little sea star and luckily she did not notice the dead fish! Back at the dive centre we sat and chilled with a nice cool beer and she asked if she could get her scuba diving licence. Yes, of course you can and so the very next day we continued and she completed her Open Water Diving licence and went home an official PADI scuba diver. The comments she received on Facebook made us all laugh, as none of her friends could believe she was now a diver. “What?? Is this the Jo that won’t come to my house because of my fish tank?” I have plenty more stories of people who faced their fears and tried scuba diving but this was my best story. All our courses are designed to start our slowly and help you grow in confidence with each step along the way. So if you think that scuba diving is only for the professionals. The ‘Jacques Cousteau’s’ of the world then you may be surprised to know that these days, it is for everyone and anyone including children as young as 8 years old.
That day she decided to face her biggest fears and have a go in the sea! She signed up for the PADI discover scuba diving program and came to the dive centre to try it. I promised her that she wouldn’t see a dead fish as we never ever see them.... only lots of alive fish of all different colours shapes, and sizes. So we started off with a lesson on how to use the equipment, the rules of scuba diving and showed her how to communicate under water. At the edge of the sea we did some skills and went for a shallow practice dive. Then after lunch we hit the sea again for a slightly deeper dive. This time she knew exactly what to expect due to her experience in the
So if you ever fancied visiting a whole new world just a stones throw into the ocean
then you can try diving and have a lot of fun. If Jo could face her fears then so can you.... Go

CRACKED TEETH Cracked teeth are a major cause of tooth ache and discomfort, but not all teeth crack in the same way. You can have a crack running through the tooth from the biting surface towards the root sometimes involving the nerve. The tooth may not necessarily appear split but the softer tissue inside is usually damaged and can cause severe sensitivity particularly with cold and/or on biting. Craze lines are tiny cracks that only involve the outer enamel. They are common and need no treatment but can appear unsightly.
causing pain on biting. Teeth can crack due to extreme grinding or biting forces; an unexpected hard piece of food (such as a stone in fruit) or even a sudden change in temperature or pressure. A tooth already weakened with a large restoration or decay is far more likely to crack. It is usually possible to repair a cracked tooth with resorting to extraction. Treatment may involve a large filling or (more commonly) a crown and possibly root canal treatment. Even if a broken tooth is causing no immediate discomfort it is important to consult your dentist as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
A cracked cusp occurs when the pointed part of the biting surface breaks off. This can be very sensitive to temperature but also often leave a very sharp edge that irritates the adjoining cheek or tongue. A split tooth occurs when the tooth splits in two starting at the root and heading up to the biting surface. Often the smaller part is mobile but still attached to the gum LA MARINA

More often than not people who struggle to lose weight tend to blame it on having a slow metabolism but how much blame can we really put on the speed of our metabolism for the extra kilos that we may have gained .What is the metabolism? How does metabolism even affect weight? And more importantly what healthy lifestyle adjustments we can make so it works in our favour? What is the metabolism? So firstly let’s look what Metabolism is. It’s the system by which the body converts what we consume through food and drink into energy, during this complex biochemical process, calories in the food and beverages are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function. A constant supply of energy even when at rest is needed, the body requires energy to maintain the body’s hidden functions such as breathing, circulating the blood, adjusting hormones, cellular repair and digesting food. These basic functions are constantly carried out and account for approximately 75% of the calories we burn each and every day; this is called the Basal metabolic rate (BMR).
lose muscle. This explains why the BMR tends to decrease with age. Excessive weight gain from an underlying medical condition that slows the metabolism such as Cushing's syndrome or hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland) is actually quite rare on contrary to popular belief. How to improve and the benefits Having a strong metabolism is not only beneficial in burning more calories but it also aids the digestive system, lowers rates of infectious and degenerative diseases and brain functionality, has positive impacts on appearance, mood and energy levels. Now we know what metabolism is, let’s take a look at some factors that may either hinder or benefit the metabolic rate and how we can make simple tweaks that can naturally fire up the metabolism and help us along the way in our journey to fat loss. Physical activity Physical activity is by far by the most variable of the factors in determining how many calories we burn and is one of the most influential elements. Increasing physical activity levels and exercising are obviously extremely beneficial, especially high intensity/ interval training or resistance weight
What determines your metabolic rate? Body size, age, gender and genes all play a role in determining your metabolic rate... Body composition and size since muscle cells burn more energy/calories than fat cells. In general, men tend to have a faster metabolism as they have more muscle mass, heavier bones and less body fat than women, which is why their daily calorie allowance is higher. As we get older, we tend to gain fat and

training they are brilliant since after exercise the metabolism stays elevated hours after even in resting state. So the next time you either go for a run, swim or

walk crank up the intensity levels with 30 second intervals. Keeping hydrated Dehydration slows down the metabolism, so staying hydrated is key drinking plenty of water helps in the body’s ability to
you metabolic rate ticking over nicely. A diet high in healthy fats, good quality clean protein and fibre including fruits and vegetables, chia/flax seed and nuts helps slows down the absorption of sugars (spikes in the blood sugar levels) and increase the speed of metabolism. Crash diets and restricting calories may also have a negative effect for numerous reasons, these short lived diets may help drop some excess weight in the beginning but your body compensates by slowing down the metabolism and conserves calories for survival, rather than concentrating on how many calories a food has consider how nutritionally dense a food is.
process calories, also snacking on fruit and vegetables instead of crisps and other unhealthy snacks are great alternatives since they have a high water content plus are loaded with minerals, vitamins, fibre and antioxidants but at the same time are low in calories. Sleep and stress Stress and not getting enough sleep “running on fumes “both have negative effects on the metabolism. Both can upset the natural balance of hormones especially important appetite regulating hormones Leptin and Ghrelin.
Diet Certain foods and beverages such as sugary drinks, processed foods, artificial ingredients/ sweeteners and refined vegetable oils are best avoided to keep
Depriving yourself from food may also increase cravings and later lead to unhealthy food choices. Eating enough calories from unprocessed whole foods to keep energy, blood sugar and hunger levels stable is very important. Keeping your body properly fuels with the right foods will help it perform better. It may be tempting to pin the blame on a sluggish metabolism and yes unfortunately we do not have control over our age, gender or genetics but as you can see we have a lot of wiggle room when it comes to improving the body’s ability to burn calories and shed unwanted excess weight.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747
POST HOC ERGO PROPTER HOC (After this, therefore because of this)
At the University we have been taught the most important part of visiting a patient is the anamnesis, which is the questions we ask the pet’s owner in order to start finding out what is wrong with the animal, such as: how do you feed your pet; is it eating, drinking and sleeping normally; have you noticed lately any kind of change in its behaviour and habits?, etc. As you can see, all of them are sensible and logical questions, but there was a question which used to surprise every student: what do you think it’s happening to your animal? What is causing, in your opinion, the problem your pet is suffering? It’s completely true that a good anamnesis usually give us a very valuable clue for arriving to a good diagnosis; for that reason it’s very important that Vet and owner must trust each other: if the owner answers “I don’t know” when asked by the Vet “Is your pet eating well?”, “Is it limping or collapsing, or maybe coughing?”, Vet’s task get much more complicated. But in some cases the situation is the opposite: the owner thinks is sure about the thing that caused the problem, just because that thing happened immediately before the problem started. And sometimes this may be confusing for the Vet. Here are two good (and real) examples: #1: “My dog is scratching (a lot) since I used that shampoo” An adult longhaired male was brought to the practice because it’s scratching all the time. He scratches non stop head, face, chest, belly, no matter if he is walking, sitting or lying down, and also shaker his head. The owners are itchy as well, so they went to the doctor and he prescribed some creams. The dog is very skinny and unable to
108
sleep, because he spends 24 hours a day scratching. He has bald patches and the skin is extremely red due to irritation. When checked under the microscope, the skin showed lots of mites (Sarcoptes scabiei), so, no doubt, that was the cause of both dog and owners itching. We started a treatment for the dog, and prepared a report for the doctor. A few days later, both dog and owners have started to improve but, despite the evidence, the owners were still selfconvinced that the mites that affected the dog and themselves were coming… from the shampoo. #2: “My cat is limping since he fell from the closet”. A young adult male cat was in pain and suffering lameness at the back legs. The owner believes the cat had fallen from a closet, so he has a fracture. At first sight, no signs of fracture were evidenced, so an X ray was taken. The picture showed no fracture, but an abnormal bone density. What caused it? -What does this cat eat? -Chicken liver. -Anything else? -No. Just chicken liver. Nothing else. -Why? -Because I was told this is the best food for cats. The cat suffered a dramatic calcium deficit, caused by a disastrous diet (liver is a massive source of phosphorus, with no traces of calcium). The funny thing is the cat didn’t show any symptom till then, so, probably, falling from the closet saved his life, since the owner was, till that moment, unable to detect the pain the cat was suffering. So, as the Latin sentence says, not always what happens previous to the problem is the cause of the problem.

They have been in a home with other cats but would probably be suited to a home where they are the only cats or with an older female cat
Angel is a 6 year old Siamese and has been sterilised. She is very loving but wants a one on one home with no other cats or dogs. She would like her very own person and to be able to sleep on their bed every night
Cindi, Bart and Lisa have been adopted from our last edition. Misha and Minky are husky cross and are Mother and Daughter. Misha is approx 5 years old and Minky is 3. They are totally inseparable so need a home together. They are good with other dogs, chipped and vaccinated.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
GARGANEY
I will hold my hands up and admit to my guilt. What am I talking about? It is the use of the traditional British birders' greeting everywhere, even here in Gran Alacant, where the words “Hello, anything about?” is always met by the usual “Hi there, no, just the usual stuff”. You can become very blasé about what is in the Clot if you are a regular visitor, and you might even get to the stage where you just can't be bothered, because there's nothing new to see, but the capacity of the Clot to produce surprises is endless. Last month produced a perfect example of this, and I have no doubt that the surprises will continue for the rest of the year. I arrived for my spring visit to Gran Alacant and thought I would see how things have changed since I was last here in October. It was obvious that the heavy rains had left water levels very high, and everything was satisfactorily greening up. I had a look in the scrape area, where all the “usual stuff” was to be seen – Moorhens, Coots, Mallards and Teal, with Swallows and House Martins hawking overhead for the plentiful flies after their long journey north. All present and correct, in other
1 11 10 0
words. But then a movement in the reeds revealed a very unusual duck – not just one, but a pair of Garganey. This is quite a scarce bird in our area, but this spring there have been several reports of sightings, particularly in the large reserve at El Hondo. To have a pair right on our doorstep was quite a bonus. It is a member of the group known as dabbling ducks, which includes the wellknown Mallard and Teal, meaning that they are surface feeders, grubbing up pond weed and other food items without having to dive deeply for them. As you can see from my photo, the male is quite distinctive with that distinctive white crescent over the eye contrasting with the purple-brown of the rest of the head. The female is quite drab, very similar to female Mallard and Teal, which of course is a camouflage strategy designed to protect her when she is sitting on eggs. Will they stay to breed here? We don't know – they are migratory birds which winter in Africa, and they may just be passing through on the way northwards. But a few do stay to breed in Spain, so we may be in luck, and the scrape area has the correct shallow level of water which these birds prefer. The problem is, that as the reedbeds grow and restrict the view, we may not know one way or the other. You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

Last year a little kitten appeared in our garden. He was very timid, refusing to come inside and had slept in the hedge for few weeks. We assumed he was feral and weren’t quite sure what to do with him; even sceptical to give him a name. We had always considered ourselves “dog people” as we had a dog for 15 years. Shell who has been running Feral Friends for a long time was very helpful to us. She advised on when to vaccinate him, the best time to neuter him and explained the best food to feed him. Casper has grown into a lovely cat, he is great company and a definite keeper!!! We would like to say thank you Shell, Lou, Ged and a very happy Casper x
