We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. Many of you will surely have met Jose at the Tourist Information Counter in Santa Pola. He always exudes enthusiasm for all that is happening in our area. Come and enjoy. We are still enjoying good weather, so time to go out and enjoy the fiestas in the Costa Blanca. This month there are more parades of Moors and Christians, Crevillent 1st to 4th of October, Rafal, Planes, Callosa d’en Sarria 8th and 9th, Campello 11th to 15th and Calpe on the 20th to 23rd of October. There are also local fiestas in Jalon, Polop or pilgrimages like the well-known in Benejuzar “el Pilar” on the 12th . In Cocentaina from 1st to 5th November will take place the oldest street fair in Valencia Region “Fira de Tots Sants” This is all for now friends Hello Everyone, Hope you all had a great summer and are now enjoying the cooler autumn nights. It certainly was a long hot summer this year! It’s great to have Gran Alacant to ourselves though for a while, also lots of great feedback from the tourists this summer all being positive about the place, plenty saying it was their best holidays here for a long time! So year on year great comments once again! The reputation of Gran Alacant is growing steadily and for the right reasons - it’s a great place to have a holiday with a family friendly atmosphere. Have a good month, Ged & Lou Our little dog Zia and our cat Casper have hidden themselves away in the magazine, can you find them? Last month Zia was on page 16 & 20 and Casper on page 39

We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Fireworks For the last 2 weeks on the market car park we have had to endure groups of people letting off fireworks. Discriminatingly throwing bangers around. This has had an upsetting and disturbing effect on people living near the site waking up children and frightening animals. We have spoken to a few people who don’t take any notice of us. One day 3 times from afternoon to night we had to listen to these fireworks. Festivals we understand using them. Its getting out of hand now. We need something done before residents get very angry. Kind Regards,Graham Town Hall Answer: During the Feasts, it is usual that people can enjoy fireworks. However, we understand that this might be a bit disturbing for children and animals, but this is just for a few days (8 days speaking properly, from 1st to 8th September). Nevertheless, we encourage people, which are being disturbed due to this issue, to call the Police if the noise reaches a very upsetting level. Q: Beach access for wheelchair users Dear Sirs I am wheelchair user, but when I go to the beach I am only allowed to travel on the pavements. On the hill there are 3 trees whose roots have broken through said pavement such that I have problems negotiating and each time I do so I am tilted towards the street and if I were to fall because I need help to get up, I am afraid that I may be run over by the speed of the cars. Please can you take steps to rectify this problem? Thank you, Robert Archibald

Town Hall Answer: In first place, through the Beach and Social Action Councillors there are in Santa Pola two specifically Adapted Bathing Points (at Gran Playa and at Playa de Levante), provided with amphibian chairs, new infrastructure (such as non-slip floor, new tents, specialized staff, etc.). In second place, regarding to the tree issue, I need more information about the location of that tree in order to send the municipal workers to solve this problem as soon as possible. Q: Excessive Noise Levels at Parque de Santa Pola, Gran Alacant. Hi Ged & Lou, hope you both are well. I would like to raise an issue with regard to excessive noise levels, generated after the official closing time at the Local Municipal Parque Sierra de Santa Pola, which is located at the roundabout of Avinguda del Mediterrani & Av. D’ Escandinavia and the perimeter of which borders our property at: (Serena) Bloque 9, Avenida de Escandinavia 2. The parque gates officially close at 22.00 hrs. However within a short space of time, the local youths enter the parque area after closure, as the parque is not very well secured and it is extremely easy for them to re-enter over the low wall at the main gates. The parque remains illuminated after closing until the early hours of the morning and I feel this tends to attract the young local residents, who re-enter the parque, where they continue to party until the early hours of the morning, sometimes until 5.00 am.

Because of the excessive late night / early morning noise levels, we are finding it extremely difficult to sleep or indeed relax, due to the proximity of the parque which borders our property, especially during the hot nights, when the windows and balcony doors open. I wonder if a “possible” solution to this dilemma, would be to switch off the parque illumination at the official closing time, which would “perhaps” make the area less attractive at night, to the local youth and also be eco friendly. The parque de Santa Pola is a great asset to the area and is well used by the local community during normal opening hours. We do not wish to spoil the enjoyment of those families and children using the parque, however we feel that the excessive noise levels after midnight is totally unacceptable and wonder if you could raise this issue with the Town Hall representative, who may be able to help with our dilemma and arrive at a possible solution to this on going problem. Kind Regards, John

The surface has broken up in the road next to the pavement that goes down the hill from the post office roundabout to the beach. It is really dangerous as it is on the steep hill. We have mentioned it to the Town Hall. Town Hall Answer: Your complaint has been transferred to the Infrastructure Department,so this problem can be solved as soon as possible, regarding to the citizen's safety. ****** The story of the derelict hotel in Arenales rumbles on. The sign in front of the building says…..

Town Hall Answer: Your complaint has been transferred to the Parks and Gardens Councilor, so as he can solve this problem as soon as possible. However, we encourage you to call the Police since there is some noise after midnight, we understand that relax/sleep is a very important time that we must protect for all citizens.

enjoying the sea, beach, and blue skies for a few more weeks to come. Look forward to everything coming back for the start of the next summer season after one of the hottest and longest summers in the 15 years since we have lived here. *****

***** 7th of September the earth really moved here on Gran Alacant. An earthquake tremor of 2.7 on the Richter scale was recorded off the coast of Guardamar. ***** The Moors and Christians fiesta in Santa Pola saw a fatality in the early hours one morning, when a drink driver drove into pedestrians, one of whom unfortunately died. ***** Each year for many years, we have watched the cormorant on the rocks on the beach by the small church on the Gran Alacant to Santa Pola, coast road. He sits there from September, and takes off hunting for fish. This September we were in the sea and there he was as usual, but this year two of his mates were fishing. We will have to keep watch to see if he has an expanded family this year.

Heard that the scam man is back, the one who says he has locked himself out. Do not give him Money. Recently he was caught by the police, but is up to his old tricks again. ***** This is an opportune time to tell you all about the wonderful sports centre facility we have here on Gran Alacant. There is an indoor arena for football, basketball, and many other indoor sports. Outside you can book and play football, tennis and padel. Showers, toilets and changing rooms are provided in the fee you pay for your activity. I have attached a few pictures of the indoor and outdoor facilities.

PLAZA MAYOR EASY HORSE CARE RESCUE CENTRE Our mission is to rescue and rehabilitate abused, neglected and abandoned horses, ponies and donkeys, while campaigning for the better treatment of animals across Spain. We are a no-kill foundation and provide each rescued animal with a safe and loving sanctuary – either here at our centre or via rehoming – for the rest of their lives.

HORSE RESCUE CENTRE CELEBRATES REACHING FUNDRAISING TARGET AS WORK ON SECURE BOUNDARY WALL CONTINUES Generous supporters from around the world have donated €20,000 to rebuild and extend Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre’s crumbling perimeter wall to secure and protect the Spanish sanctuary’s 108 rescued equines.

who this month donated the final €800 needed to hit the overall fundraising target. “Never in our wildest dreams when we started the rescue centre did we ever imagine that so many people would support us and be so passionate about what we do,” said Sue. “It’s so uplifting and inspiring for us to know that so many people are behind us and believe in what we’re doing. We’re so grateful that people are willing to put their hands into their own pockets and donate to help us build this wall.”

Co-founders Sue and Rod Weeding began calling for donations in March, hoping to raise €7000 to extend the height of a planned boundary wall upgrade to provide better protection for the equines from the bitterly cold winter winds and blistering summer sun.

The rebuild is more important than ever as the number of rescued equines at the sanctuary continues to grow, with yet another pony rescued last Saturday, the fifth rescue in just six weeks.

That followed a successful 2016 campaign to raise €13,000 to fund the initial boundary upgrade, which was prompted by a string of break-ins at the centre and intimidatory behaviour relating to the rescue of Oscar, a horse that arrived starving and dehydrated. All up, more than 200 donors contributed to the campaign, with donations coming from as far away as America, Canada, Thailand and Singapore. That included one very kind donor, who wished to remain anonymous,

PLAZA MAYOR Make a donation or Sponsor a rescued horse the police station until Rod arrived – events which underscore the importance of Easy Horse Care’s work amid a lack of official facilities for abandoned equines in Spain. The pony is almost blind in one eye, likely the result of a severe blow to the head, and also appears to have serious confirmation issues. He is now being cared for at the Rojales sanctuary. Sue said the new solid boundary would enable the centre to make better use of space as more rescues comes in. “We’ll be able to divide up the fields with additional fencing, creating four new turn-out areas, which will be invaluable for our 108 horses, ponies and donkeys,” she said. With funding secured, construction of the wall is now on the home straight. Rod, formerly a professional builder in the UK, is doing much of the work himself and is now completing the final section of blockwork on the 218-metre long boundary wall. Demonstrating the Weedings’ dedication to the project, Rod has been digging the kneedeep footings for the wall by hand since the centre’s mini-digger broke down last month, prompting them to call for donations to replace this critical piece of equipment. Donations can be made online at http:// easyhorsecare.net/donate/mini-digger. The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre relies entirely on donations to fund its important animal welfare work. Good-quality furniture donations are currently sought for the centre’s charity stores, which are low on stock. Spain's Big Loser!

Spanish slimmer Asier Santa Cruz heads to UK final after losing 42kg! The 2017 Slimmer of the Year Awards for Cambridge Weight Plan were hosted in Malaga on the 7th & 8th September. This year was a small event, the purpose of which was to recognise the achievements of our finalist slimmers and their Consultants. The entrants all had fantastic stories and the competition was extremely close, making the winner selection very difficult. As well as considering the judge’s choice (including UK managers), a secret vote was held on the night and the scores combined to reveal the final winners. The winner was Asier Santa Cruz from Pamplona.

Asier is 32 years old and was a semiprofessional football player and children’s coach before leaving his home town for work reasons. It was after this that he began to gain weight and he himself recognises that he didn’t take care of himself; ate too many convenience meals, and stopped his regular exercise. He rapidly ballooned to 136kg, developed knee and hip pain, and his doctor had to start him on cholesterol lowering medication. He eventually returned to Pamplona and there he heard about the CWP International Multicentre PREVIEW (Prevention of Diabetes through Lifestyle Intervention) Study. He was unable to join this study because he did not have pre-diabetes, but he did find a Consultant who started him on Plan and within 10 months he had shed an incredible 42kg which he has now maintained for 8 months. Asier is now able to train regularly and has regained his active fit lifestyle. He is the first Spanish Anna de Haas national to have ever won this title. Cambridge Weight Plan Independent consultant Asier will now represent Spain at the CWP International Slimmer of the Year (ISOTY) competition. This will happen t: +34 6083 44912 during the Cambridge Weight Plan Convention in Telford, e: cwp.anna@gmail.com UK that will be held from 16th -18th November later this w: www.cwpespana.es year.

Chatter Healthcare In this months column, I wanted to discuss healthcare in Spain, which is very different to the National Health Service, back in the UK. To be honest, I haven’t had much experience of either system, accept for the removal of an appendix when I was in my teens, many years ago; as well as an on going prescription for medication, before I left for Spain and that is really about it. Like most people however, I was aware of the huge problems the NHS experienced on a daily basis, especially with reference to funding, the shortage of nurses and doctors and the constant reorganising of this highly regarded public institution. Using the personal reminiscences of those who live in Gran Alacant, a few statistics and my own personal views, I want to explore just how good or not heathcare allocation and delivery is in Spain. The system in Spain is among the best in the World; like the UK it offers universal care, with no upfront fees. Spain spends around ten percent of its GDP on healthcare and is ranked 6th in Europe for the number of Doctors per person. A recent survey also showed that Spanish women outlive all other nationalities apart from the Japanese, living to the grand old age of 85.5 years old. All of these statistics point towards a healthcare system that is working. As an Expat you are entitled to free provision if you are working and paying into the system, are retired or have an EHIC card, which can be used throughout Europe. The process of registering for your SIP card is fairly straight forward, taking along relevant paperwork to your local Doctors surgery, who will arrange for your card to be issued; this card allows you to access all medical services, free!

34

I have been fortunate to talk to a number of Expats, who live in Gran Alacant about their experiences navigating Spain’s healthcare system; wanting to find out the truth behind one of Europe’s best national health services. Ges who has lived here for ten years, currently uses the facilities more than she has done in the past; her reaction was positive and praising, both for her local Doctor and Elche Hospital, who have been extremely efficient and expedient in dealing with her medical diagnosis; conditions we could all get in the future, the older we get. Whether treatment programmes, outpatient and inpatient appointments or hospital surgery, Ges can’t fault the standards; waiting times are shorter and the quality of provision is second to none; far better than what is offered by the NHS in the UK. All of us at the GA Advertiser wish her well! For the purpose of this article, I will call my next interviewee, John. John was taken to Hospital in 2011, after suffering an accident; spending two weeks inside and undergoing two operations; in John’s view the treatment was ‘first class.’ During the year after, complications set in and John had to undergo some very painful treatment, ending in further procedures. Again John can not fault the care given. Finally a decision was taken to sort out the source of the problem once and for all. With all the scans and pre ops done, John awaited surgery, suddenly receiving a call, stating that if he wanted the medical procedure, he would have to pay and claim back the cost from the UK. In 2014, at a time when an economic crisis was taking hold in Spain, the Spanish Health Service, felt unable to offer the resources John needed, so he returned to the UK for the necessary operation. Administrative decisions, based on financial concerns had prevented further treatment being carried, out under the EHIC scheme. However he would like to point out, that at no stage did he receive bad or substandard care;

nothing but. Circumstances beyond his and the consultants control had prevented a successful conclusion. Today John is fit and healthy, still enjoying his life in Spain. Local resident Jane also found the time to tell me a little bit about her encounters. Jane had to attend A&E on several occasions with her partner and was in and out of the hospital within two hours. During that time the centre carried out an xray, blood test, injection and her partner was given medication for the pain. In the UK, on the small number of occasions that I myself had to attend A&E in Southampton, I have had to wait a minimum of three hours before even being assessed. Already you can see a stark contrast in the two countries. Jane’s partner is now scheduled to have an operation on his spine, with a waiting time of only two months. Finally Jane wanted to say how pleased she was with the service she has received, both at the hospital and from her Doctor, here in Gran Alacant, where you can usually get an appointment within a couple of days. I haven’t had an awful lot of experience with the health service in Spain as yet. I had to accompany someone to the emergency department in Santa Pola, while they had an XRAY done, on the same day as the referral and we progressed though the centre quickly, taking twenty minutes or so. In the UK a similar process would have taken much longer and certainly would not have been undertaken, on the same day. Arranging a consultation with a GP in England at least was always a nightmare. In order to secure an appointment I would have to book at least two weeks in advance, sometimes much longer. The alternative was waiting around the surgery on specific days of the week, where appointments were not necessary. One could be waiting for up to three hours to be seen. We do love our National Health Service in the UK, but there is so much wrong with it and so much more we could realise from Spain.

To give you just one example; in Gran Alacant, I can buy certain medicines over the counter, without prescription. In the UK I would either have to see a Doctor first, or wait for a repeat prescription; a time consuming and an unnecessary burden on the NHS! I spoke to many local residents about their encounters, using the Spanish Health System; the vast majority of those questioned, had no complaints with a service that actually works, far better than even I expected. I also asked about the British equivalent (NHS), here the answers given were very different. Waiting times were longer, standards of care well below what Spain offers and access to medical practitioners was far more limited, with people having to book appointments weeks in advance, rather than a few days to see their GP. The British are regarded as a reserved lot, polite and unwilling to complain; local residents however were scathing about health provision in the UK, less so in the case of Spain; all offering positive views. No National Health Service is perfect; there are issues that Governments have to tackle in every country, but by and large the Spanish seem to have the balance right. It is important to note that one is able to purchase private health insurance also, as many people, especially Expats do. Insurance premiums remain reasonable, unlike equivalent policies offered in the UK and are certainly an option for those who do not qualify for free public health cover, whilst living for a prolonged period in Spain. Whichever system you choose, you will be surprised at the differences. Unlike the United Kingdom, there is no automatic entitlement to free care, that only comes from paying social security contributions. Nothing in this World is for free; Britain has much to learn from Spain, who puts those who work and contribute first, making Spain’s Health Service one of the best in the World.

Flooding Calle Monte De Santa Pola by Luke Martin-Jones James and Susan have lived in Gran Alacant for fourteen years, having bought their beautiful holiday home on the Don Pueblo urbanization in 2003. Sitting opposite the road they live on, used to be scrub land, a designated nature reserve, although shortly after their arrival the Santara Life Resort was built; a modern centre consisting of holiday homes, shops, restaurants and services for those staying within the facility. James and Susan would like to make clear how delighted they are with the complex and are enthusiastic about having it as part of their local community. When it was built, there was no upgrade to infrastructure servicing both the resort and Don Pueblo, opposite, storing up problems for the future!

maintain these systems, cleaning them regularly, they are often confronted by an on street parking issue that block access to them. Under such circumstances, maintenance vehicles tend to go around the problem, leaving blockages in place.

James and Susan’s complications began in 2008/09 when they suffered a series of floods; their home sits in a dip, opposite Santara. When this area sustains a lot of rainfall, the water tends to congregate at the bottom of this incline, directly entering their home and that of several others. In the past, before the Life Resort was constructed, any substantial precipitation would soak away onto the land opposite these homes. Not only does this not happen naturally any more, but the resort itself is built, elevated above Don Pueblo, exacerbating the problem further. The drains that do exist, inset into the road opposite, tend to get blocked easily, through debris, garden waste and foliage; blown over from the resort and homes in the immediate vicinity. Whilst the council

The second flood, once again caused a significant amount of damage. This time James and Susan were assisted by their neighbour, who helped them make an application to the ‘Consortium,’ for financial assistance, not only to pay for the destruction incurred, but also to employ measures to stop a recurrence of this dilemma. When home owners pay their insurance premiums, a percentage of that dividend goes towards the consortium, a group set up to deal with problems, such as those experienced by James and Susan, covering them and others from what I can only describe as ‘Acts of God.’ All insurance companies pay into this association, something James and Susan were not aware of, until it was pointed out to them.

40

During the first flood, experienced in 2008, James and Susan naturally went to their insurer to make a claim, after substantial damage was caused through water ingress, flowing through windows, situated at ground level, pouring into their basement, Sadly, because they were not living permanently in Gran Alacant at the time and were away in the UK, they missed the ten day limit, required by the insurance company, in which to apply for assistance.

Within a few weeks of the second flood, they experienced a third, during which time a representative of the consortium arrived to assess the damage. Once the organisation took control of their situation, things began to happen; finally an effort was made to sort the issues out. The clean up was long and invasive and a series of glass bricks were built in front of the basement windows, to stop any more water entering their property, something that has so far worked, although James

as a problem occurs. Importantly at a time when they felt very much helpless, they were heartened to realise, there were people who could offer support. Contact your insurance company, apply to the consortium, keep up the pressure on your local council and above all, don’t give up.

and Susan take no chances. Susan has made her own sandbags, used to protect the front courtyard from the floods, when

STATEMENT JAMES DANIEL they return in October and March of each year; they still live with the problem daily, preparing for any eventuality. There are still issues that need to be sorted; the local council carried out remedial work to the local drainage system about five years ago, trying to reduce the excessive flooding, but this hasn’t helped James and Susan. When the area floods, near the ‘New View Restaurant’, the Police divert traffic Via Calle Monte, creating even more concerns for local residents on the urbanization, causing further incidents of water flowing and washing into homes, instigating more damage. They have approached their local council on a number of occasions, who are working with them to come up with a permanent solution but as yet nothing further has been done to stop this ongoing hindrance. James and Susan would like to draw our readers attention to the consortium; should they themselves experience similar difficulties, they can approach this group for help. Although not advertised or common knowledge, they should seek information on contacting them, as soon

I would like you point out that we have both been to the local town hall several times. In those days we had our local councillor Loreto Cascales but this lady lost her position in the last local election. She pointed out to us a couple of times that the local authority had spent a lot of time and effort sorting drain gullies on Avda De Noruega, an area where she resides. This area where remedial work has been undertaken, has no residential properties. During several floods many cars parked up on road have been water logged inside and suffered damage to engines; they had to be taken away by the GRUA truck. Cars have floated away as there is nowhere to go. I am not aware if there is any local elected representative in the Town Hall G A, however last year I did at this time get my Spanish Neighbour to fill in a form along with photos showing blocked drains up the street.

SANTARA LIFE RESORT MIND YOUR POSTURE Hello!! Due to the nature of my work, it is very difficult for me not to look at people´s postures, whatever their age. Through work, habits or hobbies many of us have poor posture that will cause problems later on so I thought this month I would give you a couple of common examples which are easy to correct. The shoulder girdle extends from the base of the neck to the bottom edge of the large pectoral muscle. What it does is to join the arm to the trunk. In these joints are a number of muscles and if posture is bad they can become either stiffer or more flexible than normal and as a result can cause muscle tension or spasms and back problems. Hunched shoulders is an obvious example of bad posture where the shoulders are underneath the ears or rolled forwards. This posture can cause a stiff neck or upper back problems given that the trapeze muscle is connected to the base of the skull and the shoulder blades and collar bone (which form the shoulder girdle). Problems caused include headaches, dizziness from a stiff neck and the most common one is tension – those infamous knots that we unfortunately have. Having shoulders constantly rolled forwards can cause problems with the spine, causing those pronounced curves that you see in the upper back, known as a hunched back. One way to counteract this is simply being aware of how we are holding our shoulders and keep them away from our ears and keep the shoulder blades in line. We don´t tend to notice our posture when we are in the same position for a long time, for example using our mobile or the computer. Simply being aware of good posture would solve the main problem

44

and the rest would be solved by working to tone the muscles needed in order to be able to maintain good posture and increase flexibility in other muscles. So to summarise, the correct posture, some muscle toning and above all being posture aware will help avoid many of the aches and pains we experience these days which we think are inevitable but they aren´t. A couple of exercises which you could do on your own: Shoulder circles .. ten times in one direction and then ten times in the opposite direction. Lift and drop the shoulders ten times. Raise your arms and make a circular movement, then repeat in the opposite direction, again ten times. On other days, circular movements of the neck, stretching it with head tilted. Of course, this is just a small sample but something is better than nothing and doing these twice a day, morning and night, will make us feel better. I hope you give this a try and it works for you. Next month we will look at the pelvic waist - the area where the pelvis, spine and hip join. Thank you for reading GABRIELA AUZOBERRIA CALVO PERSONAL TRAINER PILATES GRAN ALACANT

The first instalment of her adventures, is a group of 5 stories which have been published in a book that was released on the 31st August 2017. There have already been a lot of purchases of this book, and one of our regular writers, Star and her daughter Ashlee, have enjoyed reading them immensely and thoroughly recommend these creative tales. The five magical stories that are aimed at children aged from 5 to 8 will definitely spark their imagination. Young Mia travels to the planet Mirth in her dreams and encounters the gnomes that live there as well as an array of strange looking creatures. In the first story, she goes on safari, riding a rhinohorseros that is half horse and half rhino. She also discovers the magical forest where toys grow on trees.

In the second story, it´s Jerome the gnome´s burpday party, which is celebrated on the anniversary of his first burp!! The third story is the Mirth games where Mia runs in a backwards race and wins a gold medal. In the fourth story, Halloween, Mia rides a broomstick to the witch tree forest, where sweets grow on trees. The last story is the

APATHY BRINGS DOWN THE FINAL CURTAIN ON GASP THEATRE

It is with great sadness that as President of GASP Theatre I have to announce that the final curtain has come down on GASP Theatre. Throughout the last 9 years we have tried to bring a little bit of 'culture' to the people of Gran Alacant but all to no avail. Our last production 'Just the Ticket' played to an audience of just 13 people on it's first night and 42 on the 2nd performance. This after 5 months of hard slog rehearsing, remembering lines and more importantly our moves. But there is nothing worse for a performer that playing to rows and rows of empty seats. I sometimes wonder what it takes to shake people out of their apathy and come and support a bunch of well meaning 'amateurs', both English and Spanish, who try to bring a little bit of culture that does not involve booze or football. I have to thank the local press for their efforts, especially the GA Advertiser who have always given us excellent coverage of the last 9 years, but all to no avail. But what is even more annoying are the well meaning people who ring and book tickets, saying 'we will collect at the door' and never turn up. We have always supported Cruz Roja and made regular donations to them but our next presentation to them of 800â‚Ź will unfortunately, have to be our last. Finally I want to thank all of our loyal patrons who have supported us during the last 9 years. David Ashley - President GASP Theatre.

Benefits of manual lymphatic drainage and reductive massage

LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE:

THE REDUCTIVE MASSAGE: Eliminates the accumulation of localized fat and stylizes the contour of the figure. It creates a more aesthetic silhouette. This is done with a strong pressure and a faster speed than the traditional massage. To obtain optimum results and intensify its effects, it is essential that the treatment is accompanied by a balanced diet and exercise. Remember that reductive massage only decreases measures, but does not lose weight. It is ideal for removing and eliminating unwanted fat. It helps to dissolve adipose tissue and cellulite due to the heat generated by special movements. It intensifies the circulation and processes of local metabolism, and helps reabsorb fat and increases calorie consumption due to increase of motor activity. It can be performed anywhere on the body: waist, hips, legs, abdomen and even underneath the back. It benefits the blood and lymphatic circulation. It can reduce up to 10 centimetres in size in 5 sessions; each massage lasts for 40 to 45 minutes. It is recommended to be carried out almost every day of the week to get results in less than a month. It also firms and tones muscles, so they compensate for lack of exercise. It helps to relax people, especially if performed in a pleasant environment with appropriate background music and aromatherapy. It relieves stress, revitalises and unlocks the bioenergy of the participants. It helps to relieve tensions and overcome emotional problems.

58

Manual lymphatic drainage is a technique that is performed with the hands through very smooth, slow and repetitive movements that favor the circulation of lymph, thus improving edematous pictures, inflammation and retention of organic liquids. The lymphatic system collaborates closely with the immune system, so manual lymphatic drainage generally improves health status and plays a very beneficial role in the nervous system, in addition to specifically treating different conditions.

BENEFITS OF MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE: •

Improve blood and lymphatic circulation.

Stimulate the immune system, increasing the body's own defenses.

It produces a soothing and relaxing effect, due to its effect on the parasympathetic system.

It improves the vascularization in the muscular myofibrils.

It restores the lymphatic flow, producing a reduction of the volume in case of edema and in some inflammations.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee 13th Volvo Ocean Race Hi , my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 9 years now. My 7 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home.

This month we wanted to invite you to join us for the start of the 13th Volvo Ocean Race which is starting from Alicante harbour on Sunday 22nd October. This iconic race first started in 1973/1974, when it was called the Whitbread Round the World Race, a total of 19 teams entered and the route covered 27,000 nautical miles. Subsequent

62

races took place every 4 years until 2008/2009 when it switched to every 3 years. There have been 12 previous races, a total of 167 boats have taken part and this year a further 7 or 8 will join the elite list of racers. The previous Race in 2014/2015 was won by Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing whose Skipper Ian Walker was from Great Britain, their winning time was 146 days, 16 hours, 9 minutes and 21 seconds!!! This year the focus is on the Southern

Ocean and there are incentives for mixed crews that include both men and women. It is also going to be the longest course in the history of this Race, which covers a staggering 45,000 nautical miles, crosses four oceans, touches six continents and 12 Landmark Cities: Alicante - Spain, Lisbon - Portugal, Cape Town – South Africa, Melbourne - Australia, Hong Kong – Hong Kong, Guangzhou - China, Auckland – New

Alicante has been an important host city for this race and this is the 4th time that this notoriously gruelling ocean race has started from Alicante. The Volvo Ocean race has been described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world. In fact, the last race included 13 Olympians with a total of 19 World Championship titles between them. It attracts those who wish to push themselves to the limits of human adventure in a World-class competition, and Olympians and adventurers are in that category. This year the Race Village in Alicante will be open from Wednesday 11th October and there are lots of experiences for visitors to the village to enjoy, the majority of which will be free. There will be an extensive programme of events and activities including an interactive museum, kid’s workshops, a wind tunnel,

Another new aspect of the race this year is that for the last leg from Gothenburg to The Hague an additional group of Legend Boats will join the racers as they aim for first place. This additional Race has been called the Legends Race and is a celebration of the previous 12 races, as legendary boats and teams who have participated in the previous races, have been invited to take part.

SOS PARAGLIDING GRAN ALACANT! We are many paragliding pilots who have enjoyed the free flying in Gran Alacant, Santa Pola. Pilots from all over the world, and their families, on vacation for weeks or weekends, spending their time near the free flight zone, near one of the most precious regions on the Levante zone in Spain.

We brought our colourful wings, adventurous minds. We were photographed a million times, as souvenirs on tourists photo albums. On brochures, flyers and souvenirs. Several businesses, opened up near this marvellous world known spot, creating jobs. Attracted many visiting pilots, flying with thousands of passenger’s tandem flights. All who wanted to go home with a treasured memory of Gran Alacant, Santa Pola. I write in the past tense, as I am worried.

68

Worried, as this soon will be all over.

And all because of the construction of an unnecessary WALL in the middle of our take-off zone!!!

A wall, which is going to be high up creating a risk of accidents. And let there be no doubt that many businesses around the paragliding community are going to suffer, to a degree, I am afraid to calculate. It all sounds very pessimistic but, afraid all this will become reality soon. The wall is going to have its negative effect on lots if things. Overall, everybody is going to lose.

THIS MAGAZINE IS NOW IN ITS 13TH YEAR. TRUST US. WE MAKE YOUR ADVERT WORK.

That money will be soon gone. Thousands persons times lots of euros, times many days, will cause a brutal negative impact economically. Only those who underestimate the revenue of foreign visitors in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola will not agree.

Who wins??? Tell me. I don’t know, nobody knows. You tell me. I write this, because that’s all I can do, expressing my concern. Please share this words with all pilots that you know, all who love Gran Alacant. And I also write this post to open up the eyes of Town hall of Santa Pola, especially after spending 60,000€ on building a new pathway for paragliders! To ask for their help, so thousands can keep on enjoying the region and its attractions. Bringing in money for the local business. I hope you all share my opinion, and share this post. We will fly further, no doubt, we are winners, and we have been flying for over 30 years, paragliding in Santa Pola. Nick, Doyouwanna Paragliding Pilots & sports-people: We ll have to go fly at other places, we will no longer be flying at the emblematic site in Gran Alacant. Gran Alacant & Santa Pola itself as community: Will loose all the numerous sportsmen coming down. Losing a extraordinary attraction for tourism. Thousands of pilots with their families will leave Gran Alacant and Santa Pola aside. Lots of money lost. Businesses in Gran Alacant & Santa Pola: Will lose the huge revenue of all visitors who come to Santa Pola to fly. They need accommodation, food, drinks, buy presents, etc.

Town Hall’s Response: We have looked into this issue, and the wall project was authorised in February. However, that was a small work, and it was supposed to be within the area which belongs to the urbanisations. Nevertheless, we have talked to the municipal lawyer, and there is a clause that states that paragliders activity MUST ALWAYS BE GUARANTEED, so we have asked our lawyer to paralyse the wall project, at least until we have the correct dimensions because there must be a safe area for the paragliders to use.

LA VUELTA

We have a house here in Gran Alacant and at the moment we are here on "Our Honeymoon", we were very excited to see the La Vuelta would be passing through Gran Alacant so we popped down to watch, what an amazing sight it was the turn out was brilliant and when the cyclist went past we could feel the passion and tension from them! Also I was extremely lucky when checking my photos that I had captured Chris's Froom, I was thrilled so thought you might like a copy of the photo for your next issue. Congratulations on getting

day to day lives just by education ourselves and choosing safer alternative products to reduce running the risk of future health problems.

There are many factors that contribute to good physical and mental health... eating a well balances diet, getting enough exercise and rest in addition to not smoking are the quite obvious ones but there are other factors that might be contributing to our health problems that a lot of us maybe overlooking or underestimating.

Where?

The obvious

Maybe the not so obvious Not only should we be conscious of what we put into our body in terms of what we choose to eat and drink but we also need to be more aware of the chemicals we come into contact with. Research has revealed that exposure to toxic chemicals we encounter daily may play a vital role in the increased number of serious health issues that nowadays so many people are plagued with, although saying that not all chemicals we come into contact with are harmful and out to get us. Some toxic chemicals can be absorbed and accumulate in the human body and play havoc causing a whole host of problems. Chemicals can disrupt and interfere with the hormonal system, cause cancer, be responsible for allergies, and respiratory and reproductive problems, surprisingly they can also lead to developmental and learning issues and even damage DNA. What we can do. Unfortunately the exposure to some certain chemical is out of our control and cannot be avoided, such as the chemicals in the air we breathe, the environment that surrounds us and the water we drink, but no need to freak out, there are hundreds of chemicals that we can eliminate from our

Some of these naughty chemicals are found in most conventional food, plastic, nonstick cookery ware, household cleaning products such as bleach, air freshener and washing powder. Cosmetic products and bathroom toiletries such conventional deodorants, toothpaste, make up, perfume and nail varnish. Here are a few tips how to live a more chemical free lifestyle: • Eat unprocessed organic food when possible. • Opening the windows of the house • Use BPA free plastic • Indoor house plants • Buy or make your own easy DIY personal healthcare products (recipes coming next month) • Buy or make your own DIY nontoxic natural cleaning products (recipes coming next month) • Remove your shoes at the front door • Avoid “fragrance” products • Swap toxic air fresheners for burning essential oils Nobody is saying go and immediately throw all your old products away but slowly over time we can fade these potentially harmful products out of our lives and switch over to more natural safer options because who actually knows what the long term damaging effects may be, but why wait to find out? Next month I will be sharing some handy homemade natural recipes to get you started into transiting to a healthier home.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP

The thin steel blade slipped easily into the minute gap between the window and its frame. The blade was not made for cutting, but for this express purpose, a special tool, for a special job. The tight fitting leather gloves he wore, protecting his hands against the possibility of accidental encounters from unseen sharp objects.

Both the front and back doors were high security efforts and so, without a key, entry by that route was nearly impossible. This was a job he had done many times. He was quite content with entering other people’s houses but it was important in his line of work, that he should not leave unnecessary marks around the place to indicate his presence. It was important for him to maintain a certain; reputation. In and out without leaving a mark. He deftly manipulated the blade against the lock which secured the small cellar window. He had guessed immediately he saw the size of the window in the light of his head-torch that it would be just big enough for him to squeeze through. After only a few seconds, the catch gave way to his pressure and the window opened. Putting the blade safely in its pouch, he eased himself through the gap and lowered himself onto the small table below. Even without looking, he knew it was there, the best success in these cases was always to find out as much about the premises as possible before even trying to gain access. He turned to secure the window; his exit would not be by that route. Slipping on his overshoes, to avoid covering the floors with his own dirty footprints, he made his way by torchlight to the cellar steps. He was already aware that the power had been shut off, so there was no

point in trying the light switches; in any case the torch light was adequate. Reaching the top of the steps, he checked the door to his left. It had been left slightly ajar and he was able to confirm it was the kitchen. It was better to make immediate confirmation that the information he had been given was accurate. Even though familiar with their own homes, people were known to mix up left from right. Looking for his target on the wrong side, under torchlight, would not make his job any easier. The next door, down the hall on the left, was closed but he was now confident that would be the lounge. To his right the door would lead to the bathroom. Nothing in those rooms was of interest to him. He knew his target was at the end of the hall. The small box was inset into the wall, behind a picture of a couple in their sixties. He had only met the Browns, once but his easy conversational style had garnered enough information to lead to this point. His torch was focussed on the keypad as he presses the four digits, they were both born in the same year; 1-9-5-0. There was a satisfying sound from the bolt inside the box and the door swung open. From the small selection of similar items in the security box, he selected the one that he knew was, at that moment, the most valuable. A large, intricately cut key. He slid the key into the lock on the front door and turned it. The security bolts moved aside and he opened the door. “There you go Mr and Mrs Brown; you might want to leave a key with your neighbours next time you go away on holiday. Just in Case!”

ANIMALS AND NATURAL DISASTERS also rescue animals in case of natural disaster, as happened, for example, during Doñana National Park forest fire last summer and also in 2015 at Aragon floods. Situation was similar in Huelva: Firemen are also trained for handling and rescuing large animals when they get trapped or fall into water: These last weeks there have been several tropical storms and hurricanes at USA and the Caribbean. We have been told, in advance, when and where it was expected to rain, and the way the wind was going to blow. In some places, local authorities recommended people to leave their homes in order to minimize the damage. Families who left their homes also took their pets with them. They searched for hotels which allowed pets, or maybe were temporally rehomed with relatives: anything but leaving their pets behind. These facts could be seen during recent storms and floods at USA and Japan. There also have been other families who stood with their pets till emergency services rescued them. Today we noticed in the papers that people that escaped from the storms in Florida leaving their pets behind, could face even prison: Abandoning a pet is a felony in Spain, too, and leaving your pet behind even in case of a natural disaster, may be considered as “cruelty to animals”.

When we know there is a risk of natural disaster, it’s our responsibility to take care of our pets as we do daily in normal conditions. If something happens, emergency services will help us and our pets. What should we do in case of overcoming dangerous situation? We must call the authorities: 062 (Guardia Civil); 092 (Local Police). If we dial 112, which is Spanish national emergencies co-ordination phone number, you will be redirected to the most appropriate emergency service the situation requires, for example, when there is a dog running free at the freeway, which implies a high risk of accident. As anyone can understand, fake calls or “jokes” when calling the emergency services, are punished with fines that can reach hundreds of thousands of euros. The fact that not everybody knows is firemen services are not free, and the prices they charge you after the service is finished may vary depending on the geographic area.

Firemen and Protección Civil agents can

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

NEW BIRDWATCHING GUIDE OF SALINAS NATURAL PARK I expect that many of you will have a Smartphone of some sort, and here is your advantage. You can get apps which cover bird identification - free ones and one you have to pay for. The free apps include Ornithopedia, Ornidroid Europe, Birds Europe (ETI) and Birds of Europe. All have their strengths and weaknesses, but since they are free you can try them out and see which one (if any) suits you. They are available on both the Apple and Google sites, simply enter “Europe Bird Guide” in the search bar.

October – the best month for finding interesting birds as migration is well under way. You are likely to see many species, from departing summer visitors such as Bee-eaters, to arriving specialities like Bluethroats and Black Redstarts. Then there is always the possibility of finding some sort of vagrant – one of those waifs and strays which occur in unexpected places, and the Clot has a fine record of really lost birds which might not be seen again any time soon. I thought long and hard about which one of these possible rarities to look out for this month, then I realised that if I wrote about one particular bird, I would look pretty silly if none actually turned up. So I'm taking a slightly different approach, which is to give you an edge if you come across something really unusual. The standard recommendation is to get yourself a guide book to the birds of our area, but the problem is that these are often bulky, and if you get a publication written for the local area it might only be available in Spanish which won't suit everyone.

98 98

The Rolls Royce of birding apps is the Collins Bird Guide, which is an electronic adaptation of the birder's bible - The Collins Guide to the Birds of Britain and Europe. The app costs about half the price of the book (12.99 on Google Play Store) and can of course be carried about in your pocket much more easily, plus it has the big advantage that it also has bird call recordings for each species which aren't available with the book itself. It is a tremendous resource but only if you have some prior knowledge of bird families. However, if you don't have a smartphone, and don't want to lug a big book around, there is something newly available which might help you. Pop along to the Santa Pola Tourist Office and ask for their new leaflet on local birds – it concentrates on birds found in the Salinas area, but most if not all can also be found in the Clot. You might recognise the name of the photographer who supplied many of the photos! You can see more photographs of wildlife our area by visiting www.marketheridge. smugmug.com See you next month.
