We would like to thank the TOURISM COUNCILLOR for enabling Jose Manuel Blasco to join our magazines monthly column. On the 9th of October there wil be a powerful fireworks display “mascleta” at aproximately 1pm to commemorate the day of the Valencian region. In Elche, the XXIII Medival festival will be held from 25th of October to 1st of November with plenty of activities, theatre and music. There are also local fiestas in Jalon, Polop or pilgrimages like the well-known in Benejuzar “el Pilar” on the 12th. We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Taxis in Gran Alacant Hi Ged and Lou, Spent most of Sunday 2/9/19 trying to book a licensed taxi to take me to the airport on 4/9/19. E-mails have remained unanswered and calls to numbers on cards unavailable. I have booked a taxi but am concerned that it will in fact pick me up. Obtaining legitimate taxis is a great concern due to language difficulties and drivers not familiar with Gran Alacant. Pirate taxis should be avoided at all costs. However the taxi drivers association should make a greater effort to provide a proper service. It is interesting to note there is not a single advert for taxi service in your excellent magazine. Kind Regards, M Redmayne Town Hall Answer: Your complaint has been transferred to the Public Services Department so as they can warn the taxi associations in order to improve the service which is being given at Gran Alacant. Furthermore, regarding to the pirate taxis, the Town Hall is taking all the actions needed in order to avoid these kind of situations. Q: New hotel in Gran Alacant Hello Ged and Lou, We have a house in Gran Alacant and enjoy reading your magazine every month – keep up the good work. There is a rumour going about new hotel being built in Gran Alacant. Is this true and if so, when and where would it be? Kind Regards, Paul and Ann Town Hall Answer: Yes, a new hotel is planned to be built in Gran Alacant, at the area nearby the Mercadona. Regarding to the deadline of construction, although it is not sure yet, it will be most likely built by the end of 2019.

Q: Frogs Can anything be done by the local council regarding the plague of baby frogs. We live near the church and at the last count we had well over a hundred in our garden. This has been a problem for a lot of the residents. Thank you, Sue Town Hall Answer: Your complaint has been transferred to the Sanitary Department so as they can warn the company which is in charge of plague control in order to solve this situation as soon as possible. ********** Aquarius Congratulations to Aquarius Restaurant. Mac and Angie are celebrating 10 years in business and nice to see Mac back in the kitchen after a long illness. ********** GA-HOMEFINDERS CARS DAMAGED

We would like to meet the person who recently scratched 2 of the GA-Homefinders vehicles in the GA-Centre garage. We invite you to have the "courage" to come and see us and give us the reason for such an act ... GA-Homefinders Team

BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS: That is it, the masses have returned to their country of origin and left us to relative peace and quiet. We were in long queues at roundabouts and long queues in the supermarkets and in fact long queues everywhere for everything. We enjoyed the beautiful beaches and the warmth of the Mediterranean as much as we could. Sharing it all with the holidaymakers, which they paid a fortune for and which we enjoyed for free.

Q: Parking outside Medical centre A couple of ideas to help the Town Hall collect more money to invest in Gran Alacant. On the health centre car park where there are never enough parking spaces, a youngster parked his car in the disabled bay and went across the road for a coffee. Why not book these people and collect funds? Again on the same car park, someone parking across two parking bays. Where are the police? Cars always parked across the bus/train bays, why not book them? Police seem to let car owners do just as they like. Barry Townhall Answer: We have taken in consideration your proposal in order to collect more money

for Gran Alacant. In addition, we want to encourage all people to call the Police Department when these kind of situations happen. ********** I know this has been discussed many times, the dangerous turn off the N332 into Santa Pola, opposite the derelict hotel. I assume there must be a very good reason why the large area of land, marked on the map with a yellow arrow, cannot be utilised for a roundabout. Will ask the Town Hall next month. Unless of course anyone knows and can tell us.

********** A press release says that an investor is to build a four-star hotel next to the Gran Alacant shopping centre. Although the project has already been submitted to the local government, some licenses still have to be granted. Another complex will have the category of four stars and will be located in the vicinity of the paragliding area in Gran Alacant, as well. There is no start date because some licenses still have to be obtained, but the last step that was taken for this centre is the approval of the Isolated Action Program so that the developer can develop a plot of 33,000 square meters where 70% would be properties with five floors plus basement, and annex a residential complex with 95 town-houses of two and three heights, in addition to a commercial area of two plants, which in total would add an investment that would exceed 23 million Euros. According to this agreement, the developer

5

will not obtain the building license of the residential until they are granted the license to build the hotel, and the certificate of completion will not arrive by the Consistory until four-star accommodation is completed. It is a pending issue that for years various political parties have been trying to encourage large investors to bid on the Santa Pola and Gran Alacant land in order to build complexes that include hotels, as there are only four without counting tourist accommodation and camp-sites, in this area. Add to that the possibility of a new health centre and a second school. Lets all hope these plans come to reality to give Gran Alacant a much needed boost. They certainly would be a great addition to what we already have in the town. **********

We still have the big problem that not enough people sign on the padron, so there are more people here than officially named on this list. The only reason to sign on is because we are allocated sums of money equal to numbers on the padron, not to the actual numbers that live here. ********** The Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football Club have secured a regular playing slot, indoors, at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre every Thursday from 12 noon until 1pm. We have new players joining almost every week, so if you would like to join us to get those old muscles moving, just turn up, or get more details from Barry on laneinspain@hotmail.com If you would like to supply news and info for our next edition, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

• Safe property key holding • Organising tenancy procedures • Property maintanance & qualified tradesman service including painting & minor repairs • Cleaning • Transfers to/from Airport fondos?

We are based in Gran Alacant Email: alacantkey@gmail.com T: 865 660 990 M: 665 638 759

Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club Sponsored by The Belfry, The Pub, Bowling Abroad, Avalon, LoungeD and Rogers CHICKEN RUN

Sunday 26th August The August Chicken Run Competition on a very hot Sunday morning was well supported with twenty members bowling. Because of the intense heat the competition was reduced to fourteen ends. The chickens were donated by Jim Spearing and the eggs were donated by Julia and Ian Hamilton. The eggs for the ladies were won by Tanya Oliver and for the men Howie Williams. The chicken for the ladies was won by Joan Harding and for the men it was jointly won by Alan Ashberry and Chris Harding. Alan and Chris agreed to auction their chicken to raise extra funds for the club. All in all it was another successful and enjoyable Club Day.

GOLDEN WEDDING

August 31st Monte Mar Bowls Club members would like to congratulate Jan and Mick Soars on their Golden Wedding. We hope you had a lovely day celebrating with family and friends.

GRAN ALACANT MIXED RINKS

Saturday 15th September was the start of the 13th annual Gran Alacant Mixed Rinks at the Monte Mar Bowls club. Unfortunately this year's event was curtailed by a couple of thunderstorms on the first day so no play was possible. Undeterred the ninetysix players arrived on the Sunday 16th and after a rework of the bowling schedule, play got underway. There followed two days of top class bowling although it was necessary to reduce the number of ends played in each game this did not detract from the competition. By lunchtime on Monday 18th the twenty-four teams were reduced to eight for the final stages. Monte Mar had two teams in the semi-finals of the trophy but sadly neither progressed to the final.

20

The final was won by the San Miguel team of Gail and Fred Willshire, Val and Chris Collier. They beat the defending champions from San Luis, Kath Reid, Ann Holland, Pam Lockett and Giuseppe Galelli. The two Monte Mar teams met in the 3rd/4th place play-off. The team of Paula and Don Cleeter, Harry Dobson and Alan Ashberry beat the team of Jean and Rod Chamberlain, Diane Horsington and John Hunt. In the Plate final, from the teams who were runner-up in their groups, the San Miguel team of Ken Hope, Ann Allen, Paul Hayward and Gary Raby beat the Quesada team of Jason Prokopowycz, Peter Morgan and Mark France. After the finals the Monte Mar Chairman Chris Harding, presented the winners with their individual prizes and also the main trophies. He thanked all those who had taken part in the event and those club members who had worked so hard to make it a great two-day competition.

THE NEW SEASON

Monte Mar is getting ready for a new bowling season and the new Captains and vice Captains have been selected. Well done to Ronnie Cairns and Jack Burrell (Matadors), Chris Harding and John Hunt (Toreadors) and Chris Merry and Dave Melville (Winter League). We would like to welcome our new bowlers and wish all our players the best best wishes for this coming season. Lastly, support and encourage each other and most of all enjoy your bowls. Good Luck everyone. Chris Merry (club captain) For further information about Monte Mar Bowls and Social Club check out our website or email us at info@montemarbowls.com. gives you more energy.

Hi there, for those who don’t know me my name is Jackie Canale and I am a holistic therapist living and working in Gran Alacant. How are you all feeling with Autumn now here? I love this time of year, getting the winter wardrobe looked out and there is always a nice calm atmosphere around the area. Its at this time I do my little 4-day holistic detox here and there. It’s a great way to rid your body from the toxins and boost your energy and more importantly your immune system for winter approaching. Maybe you too would like to try it? If you are anything like me (I love nothing more than eating with friends) the summer months can be a complete blur of too many late nights, eating out way too much or enjoying too many late-night BBQ’s and drinking your weight in alcohol at the same time. No better time as now to start the gentle detox. I say gentle detox simply because way too many people jump on the fad diet wagon and yes, they may work short term and lose a lot of water in your body, but they aren’t great for the system and for the long term. Getting mentally ready is the key, don’t use the word “diet” for as soon as we say it our bodies start crying out for all the wrong things. Cleansing the body naturally definitely

Start with eating only organic, whole or fresh foods, and hopefully once you go organic you will taste the difference and never look back. Absolutely no white breads, rice or pastas, and no red meat, caffeine or alcohol for the 4 days. I call myself a “flexitarian” so basically, I eat meat sometimes, if it is organic and well kept with some quality of life and I never eat baby animals. I do vegetarian diet a lot during my week, doing Reiki I always feel the energy is stronger with less toxins in the body. The meat market in Alicante is a great place to get organic meat and veg, I frequent it a lot as I am in the city most mornings with my kids, it opens early, which is perfect and here you will find, corn or grass-fed meat and organic veg. and it has a huge choice. I also have my favourite “green” cook book in my kitchen at all times, “How Not to Die” by Michael Gregor MD the recipes for energy bites etc are great and it is all vegan. My kids think they are getting snickers balls, they are that good.

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

Vuelta a Bolón in Elda

Driving Time: 40mins Walking Time: 3hours/7km Google maps directions: Paseo Ronda, 9, 03600 Elda, Alicante

My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further.

This route has two options. We followed the signs for PR-CV 196. In the first section of the trail you climb on the mountain to the peak of Bolón at 652 meters above sea level. That’s the hardest part of the

Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. This time we’ll head out to north of Alicante. To Elda to hike PR-CV 196 “Vuelta a Bolón”. This is a nice hike without any difficult sections. The route starts at the Jardines del Vinalopo where you can see the first route markings (white and yellow stripes) on walls, sticks, fences. Just follow those. if you see a cross with same colors that indicates you are trying to go wrong way. Your way from the city will head out to the mountains.

HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED

While in Elda you might want to catch some local sights like Museo del Calzado (The Footwear Museum) or Castillo de Petrer quite near to Elda. Next month we go on foot again. Hasta luego, Heidi & Olli trail. The views are spectacular over Elda. When we went there it was early morning and there was fog all over Elda. The other route is called PR-CV 196-1 it slightly shorter (4km) but is steeper. We had breakfast at the stairs of an abandoned house, and that was about the only thing you could sit on that route other than rocks. This route was very well marked and we had no trouble being on route. This route is good exercise and will prepare you for the next hikes we’re about to do!

CHECK LIST

Always when going on hikes check that: • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage back down with you!) • Have good shoes for walking • Have small first aid kit with you • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea • Always tell someone where you are going and when you’ll approx. be coming back

MIRROR CORNER THE POWER OF ILLUSION

Nowadays there is a Branch of Psychology called Positive. It talks about aspects like assertiveness, confidence, self-thoughts and actions, open mindedness, coping with loss and grieving and facing problems among others. It’s working to keep the ¨positive aspects¨ safe, and upgrading the ones that are in some way lowered by different situations. Seems extraordinary, but indeed it is a very useful tool! Is this approach suitable for everybody? Well, not indeed. By a proper study, we psychologists, have to take much care because there are personality disorders that have to be treated with other clinical approach, but let me tell you one thing … quite personal, because I can be ¨personal¨ in this ¨corner¨, no matter what kind of disorder you may have, no matter if it is far or nearer from reality, no matter if you are young or older, if you are black or white, English, Russian or South American… I did find something common in all of them! Through many years of listening and feeling, looking and living … I can see the role of a magical energy that remains inside each one of you: The Power of Illusion. The

50

more illusion the person has, the better they can cope, the better their motivation and recovering and I am looking at this energy independently from the kind of problem he or she may be facing. Working with children is absolutely magical because they know exactly what they like, and if they don´t have it, they feel miserable. The problem is that sometimes we don’t know what we want as we grow up. Some of us know clearly what it is we would love to be doing, but most us go through life wondering what it is we want to do even in our later years. Why am I talking about children? As an adult is very important to remember what you used to dream about when you were a child, what were your dreams and inspirations? Why? Because from there comes YOUR POWER OF ILLUSION! Lets mention few examples: If you used to dream about being a ballerina traveling around the world … but instead of that you fell in love, got married, have children and a nice partner who cares about you, but never knows why you look so sad? Or if you loved repairing cars but instead got stuck in an office job and typing on

They both lost the feeling that childhood ILLUSION used to give them… so what to do now? Let me give you a piece of advice: When you feel exhausted and at the edge of being burnt out - give yourself a break! RUN AWAY! It doesn’t matter if you are dressed for it, just escape for an hour. Walk in warm sand or wet you feet in the sea. Close your eyes, just feel the water and think about yourself as a child: What did I like? How did I play? What did I enjoy the most? What made me happy? What job did I dream about doing as an adult? Try to go back in time and feel the energy … Then open your eyes, look around and take note. Is there something in your life, which is close to your childhood illusions? Perhaps you are not a ballerina, but still enjoy moving your body in a different way? When back to normality, try to find a corner for those old ILLUSIONS If you dreamed about being a ballerina as a child but now you think it’s too late, try to find local classes or simply just make space to go out dancing sometimes. JUST DO IT! Do you know why? This will prevent you from deteriorating in all aspects physically and mentally. It will give you the energy you need to cope with reality, at least until the next change!

Finding your illusion is worth doing. With illusion you live, you fall and get up, you cry and go for another try. You are attached to reality because you want to live and do things with the ones you love. So you stay and fight. Without it, everything turns obscure and our fears grow as we become older and have less time.

Sometimes you are living your illusion and its just matter of adjusting. If you think you don’t have it, try to find it! It’s a MUST for finding that balance in our lives, so come on LETS GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY AND CREATE ILLUSION AMONG US. Let’s find the corner for real and pure happiness … and never forget to play like a child! Play with your friends, with your children or grand children, with your partner … a little bit every day. Play with words, with flashy attitude, with some unexpected spark. TRY! Following your illusion is not only living the best life ever for you, but also a gift that you give to others and back out to the world. I would love for you to suggest to me some topics you want to know about, for sure I will have had some real topics related to it during my past work history, I have twenty years of folders to investigate. You can ask me any questions, and I will give you my contribution in the form of suggestion, hoping it can help you.

Paddy, had long heard the stories of an amazing family tradition. It appeared that his father, grandfather and greatgrandfather had all been able to walk on water on their 18th birthday. On that special day, they'd each walked across the lake to the pub on the far side for their first legal drink. So when Paddy's, 18th birthday came 'round, he and his pal Mick, took a boat out to the middle of the lake, Paddy, stepped out of the boat . . . And nearly drowned! Mick just barely managed to pull him to safety. Furious and confused, Paddy, went to see his grandmother. 'Grandma,' he asked, "It's my 18th birthday, so why can't I walk 'cross the lake like my father, his father, and his father before him?"Granny looked deeply into Paddy's, troubled brown eyes and said,"Because your father, your grandfather and your great grandfather were all born in December, when the lake is frozen, and you were born in August!

Paddy and Murphy are working on a building site. Paddy says to Murphy “I’m gonna have the day off. I’m gonna pretend I’m mad!” He climbs up the rafters, hangs upside down and shouts “I’M A LIGHT BULB! .. I’M A LIGHT BULB!” Murphy watches in amazement! The Foreman shouts “Paddy you’re mad, go home”! So he leaves the site. Murphy starts packing his kit up to leave as well. “Where the hell are you going?” asks the Foreman. “I can’t work in the friggin’ dark!” says Murphy.

Mayka’s Kitchen

SIERRA MAR

Mayka’s Kitchen Hi all, Is it just me or this summer doesn’t want to leave? I’m so ready for the winter dishes! My favorite food is warm and comfy. Since it’s still very warm out there we are going to make a simple and delicious Purée that is also suitable for vegetarians by simply not using the ham. Hope you all enjoy xxx.

Asparagus with Iberian Acorn Ham Purée

Ingredients for 4 servings • • • • • • •

500 grs of fresh thick asparragus 1 medium potatoe 1 onion 1 leek olive oil 50 grs of Iberian acorn ham (or any nice ham you can get, serrano would be also nice) salt and ground black pepper

Let’s Start! Wash the asparagus and cut all the dry ends. Keep 12 tender tops aside and cut the rest down. Clean and wash the leek. Cut it and put aside. Peel, wash and cut the potato and boil together with the leek in 1 and 1/2 litres of salty water for 15 minutes. Meanwhile cut the onion. Use another sauce pan, add some olive oil and sauté the onion for 5 minutes. Add the asparagus, season with salt and ground black pepper and sauté for another 10 minutes. Add the sauce pan ingredients to the boiling pot with the leek and potato and boil for 5 minutes. Sauté the rest of the tender asparagus tops. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Reserve. Use a blender to get a puree out of the pot ingredients. Serve in bowls and add the asparagus and ham cut in small pieces on the top.

CYCLING with Bici Gran Alacant

by Olli-Pekka

Route to San Felipe Neri Bici Gran Alacant is a group for all roadbike cyclists in and around Gran Alacant. My name is Olli-Pekka and I joined the group 2,5 years ago when I moved to Gran Alacant from Helsinki, Finland. Cycling has always been my passion and being new to this area I didn’t really know too many cycling routes, so after a little internet research I was only too happy to discover other cycling enthusiasts and group Bici Gran Alacant. It was great to meet people with the same interest and join more experienced cyclists who know the roads around here. Many of the roads have dead ends or lead somewhere totally unexpected. In the group you will discover good rides and also visit fabulous places you may not have the courage to go to by yourself. However, the group is very democratic and anybody can suggest a new ride! Conditions in Costa Blanca and the area surrounding Gran Alacant are very good for cycling with only 34 rainy days per year on average. Roads are fairly quiet so you don’t have to worry about the traffic too much. Drivers are polite and give plenty of room. Most of the roads are in very good condition. Weather is dry so you don’t have to worry about getting wet or the roads being slippery. All you have to do is to get on your bike, enjoy the sunshine and wind in your face. If you have a bike or you decide to rent a bike in Gran Alacant, the beach road between Santa Pola and Gran Alacant will become very familiar. It’s the first cycling route most cyclists take. But there are also plenty of other really nice sights to see if you dare to go over the N-322 and venture into the wild. The routes or places I write about can be reached with road-bikes.

56

I would like to thank Mr Dave Brown, a long-standing member of the group, for introducing these routes to me. This month I would like to tell you about a route to San Felipe Neri. Elche is the palm-capital of Europe and that can be seen when going for a nice cup of coffee in a small village of San Felipe de Neri. Small road through palmeras and Parcque Natural El Fondo on the side of the road. Small village is easy to navigate. Go over the N-332 by the CG. Take the lane towards Cartagena. Once you arrive to N-332 take the first junction to the right in 50m. Just ride end of the road and turn left to the CV-851. Carry on the CV-851 or as some like to call it : “infinity road”. Continue straight over the first roundabout towards Dolores. After ~7km there is a next roundabout where again we carry on towards Dolores. 2km’s more and there is yet again another roundabout. Take the second exit (continue straight). After maybe 1km turn left to small road with sign “Parque Natural el Hondo”. Kind of fake junction will appear, but just keep going to the left. Keep on this road through palmfarms about 10km and you are in San Felipe Neri. There is a nice café next to the church for tostada and coffee. To and back to San Felipe Neri the route is more or less 60km You can find information about several weekly rides on our Facebook page Gran Alacant Road Cyclist “Bici Gran Alacant”.

DRAMA IN A TEACUP The light faded quickly in the city as the sun began to set behind high rise landscape. The young woman sat alone on the balcony enjoying the warm air and the changing colours of the buildings. Not quite the beautiful changes that happen to the trees in the autumn, but there was something magical about it in any case. Her move to the city had not been an easy choice. She had given up her job to move away from home, her parents and her friends. She had convinced herself that it was the right thing to do and that the only way to succeed was to take a leap of faith. This was her big leap of faith. She had been watching the two men, one at each end of the block of flats opposite, for some time and as the street lights came on, each of them retreated slightly into the shadow of the building. The one to her right was reading a newspaper; or rather he was holding a newspaper. It partially hid his face and he had not turned a page for some time. At the other end of the block. The man with a hat, held a mobile phone to his ear. Again, it was unlikely that he was using it. There were no movements, nods of his head or arms to indicate conversation. The door of the apartment block opened and an elderly lady exited onto the pavement. Sha paused for a moment and then turned left, took a pace, looked along the street and then turned about, to walk in the opposite direction, towards the man with the hat. As she approached him, he bowed his dead slightly and turned to face down the side street that ran down the side of the apartment block. The elderly woman continued along the street in the direction of the small row of shops in the next block. As she walked on, the man resumed his unconnected call on the phone. Daylight was fading and the street lights were now the only source of light as the apartment door opened again and two young women stepped on to the

pavement. They laughed together for a moment and then each turned to walk in opposite directions along the street. Almost simultaneously they reached the men who were at the end of the block. It was clear from the warm greetings they all exchanged, that the men had been waiting for the girls and the two couples went their separate ways down the side of the apartment block and out of sight. She sat for a while and reflected how things just went on in the city, much the same every day. Her vantage point on the balcony gave her a glimpse of a tiny part of the daily routine of ordinary lives. Very little traffic moved along the street and eventually the old woman came back from the shop, carrying her evening groceries. Life went on without drama. As she rose from her chair and moved into the flat through the single balcony door, the evening news was on the television. Although the sound was turned down, she knew what she was looking at. Someone in a white sheet was being wheeled out of a building and into an ambulance. A young man could be seen being led away in handcuffs. This also seemed to be an ordinary daily occurrence. The banner across the bottom of the screen gave the all too familiar three digit number for people to call “if they had been affected by the issue. Her eyes filled as she moved her gaze to the telephone. For a moment she just wondered; then the sound of a key trying to find its way into the door of the flat. He was back early; a sure sign that the card game had gone badly and he had drowned his sorrows before staggering home. Then, the sound of the key finding its mark and the door lock opening. She looked again at the telephone but somehow knew she would never use it. As he opened the door, she knew that now, her drama would start.

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Oceanogràfic VALENCIA Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 10 years now. My 8 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home. This month we wanted to share our experiences from a two day break that we took in Valencia. My Mum was visiting and I have always wanted to take her to the Oceanografic as Ashlee and I fell in love with it when we first visited and have been wanting to go back ever since. and headed towards the city landscape of Valencia. We arrived at our hotel for the night, left our bags with reception and headed off to the City of Arts and Sciences which was just 5 mins away.

So after revealing the surprise of our trip, early in the morning we set off from home. My Mum was really surprised at how different the scenery was as we drove the toll free route that took us past Alcoy and through the mountains. Almost two hours later we left the countryside behind

Out & About with Star & Ashlee This group of stunning buildings includes an Opera House, IMAX/3D Cinema, Science Museum and the Oceanografic. The Oceanografic is the largest Aquarium in Europe and is home to 45,000 creatures from around 500 individual species. We took our time to walk through all the areas that are separated into the various ecosystems that can be found on Earth. It really is difficult to put into words how amazing this place is, especially the

Frogs and Turtles to name a few and we even saw Nemo and Dory!!

We all thoroughly enjoyed the Dolphin show which brought tears to my eyes from start to finish as the relationship between the Dolphins and their trainers was beautiful to see. In fact, the Dolphinarium is one of the largest in the world and they actively encourage conservation which can be seen in the show as although you see the Dolphins do amazing things, it is showing how they have fun and interact rather than just performing a show to entertain the crowd. They also have the largest 4D cinema in Spain so we treated ourselves and watched a short film where we were blasted with air, covered in bubbles and foam and felt little creatures around our feet!!! It really was a fantastic day. two really long tunnels that allow you to get really close to the animals as they swim around and above you. We admired all of the different types of Jellyfish, Fish, Rays, Sharks, Beluga Whales, Penguins, Walruses, Sea Lions, black necked Swans,

Join us next month to discover the other things we saw and did on our 2nd day in Valencia. Until next time ... Star & Ashlee xxx

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY Hard to believe we are now in October as it only seemed yesterday that we started these articles in GA Advertiser , albeit this is our eighth month. We hope you have enjoyed learning about our Society and the events of the last few months. We have seen the summer come and go but GAGS has continued throughout as it has since we were formed in 2003.This is now the high season for golf and, as expected, the course has become a lot busier, particularly given the relationship the owners have developed with some Scandinavian golf associations. This will mean that some of our tee times in October will have to be adjusted so if you are intending to play with us please get in touch beforehand to check the timings for your arrival at the course and the actual tee time. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you. For more information please contact either Barry C (686180585) or Barry D (966183018).

Group road bike rides from Gran Alacant Bici Gran Alacant We are a small group who spend most of the winter here in Gran Alacant. If you are interested in joining one of our rides look us up on Facebook Gran Alacant Road Cyclist (Bici Gran Alacant) where ride details are posted.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

DOGS SENSE OF SMELL

Mesocephalic dogs: such as Labrador: maximum sense of smell, because the nose is not too long or too short.

Why do hunting dogs have such a developed sense of smell? This kind of dogs is able to keep olfactory particles in their noses even when they are just breathing. Everybody knows when a dog is sniffing it makes very short and quick inhalations and exhalations in order to make the particles arrive to the olfactory neurons. Hunting dogs don’t need to do it normally, so they are more efficient.

One of the most amazing characteristics of dogs is, no doubt, their sense of smell. Throughout evolution, dogs have developed a great olfactory sensitivity; other senses such as vision or touch, are poorer, however. Why can dogs smell much better than people? Olfactory system is the same in both cases: neurons with detect particles from the nose and carry the nervous impulse to the brain. Sensitive part of dogs nose is, in proportion, much bigger than humans one: the total surface which is able to collect chemical stimulation is millions of times bigger in dogs, so they have a much bigger number of neurons working for the sense of smell. According to head and nose shape, there are 3 kinds of dogs: •

Brachycephalic dogs: snub-nosed dogs such as Pug or Bulldog. Their sense of smell is medium range, because internal nose surface is not very big.

Dolichocephalic dogs: sharp-nosed dogs such as Greyhound. Medium range sense of smell too, but in this case it’s because some particles get “lost” in the long tunnel their internal nose surface is, so they can’t reach the brain.

84

Does everything smell? No. Only things that release particles in the air can be detected by the sense of smell. These particles must be at least minimally soluble in water and fat to be able to be detected by nose membranes. Sense of smell also helps tasting: when a dog or a cat (or a person) loses the sense of smell (anosmia), it may lose appetite as well since they are unable to taste the food properly. This is a common condition in fluey people, dogs and cats, or after nasal membranes damage. Another amazing characteristic of the sense of smell is that olfactory neurons are able to regenerate, and they do it all the time (they are renewed every 60 days), and this is the reason why we never lose the sense of smell when we get old. Is it true that dogs can smell the cancer? Yes. Dogs sense of smell is so efficient that they can identify an individual by its particular smell when properly trained. A specific training can make a dog detect prostate cancer by smelling the urine of the patient. This way of diagnosis is very useful because it’s simple, quick, and not aggressive (no blood sampling, no biopsy...). But dogs are not the only animals with an amazing sense of smell: camels are able to smell water (a single particle at wet sand), which is 70 km away when they are at the desert.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge

CRESTED COOT

Autumn – most birdwatchers will tell you that this is the best time of the year, with summer birds leaving, winter birds arriving and this year's crop of young birds dispersing to new areas. In addition to this, birds are moving through on migration and generally getting lost, which means that there is a good chance of anything turning up, anywhere! (Before I go on, I should point out that my favourite birdwatching time is Spring, when the birds are in their finest plumage and singing like billy-oh to attract a mate, but that's just me). There was some exciting news in September that a new species has been found in the Clot, probably as a result of the aforementioned dispersal of young birds. It's worth looking out for, its a type of Coot, the all-black bird with the white face and beak which is easily seen on any of the ponds in the reserve. This version is called a Red-knobbed Coot. Yes, well, I can hear the sniggers from here. It's not my fault that in the birding world there are some decidedly iffy names for birds – most names were given in an age when a double entendre was when you asked a Frenchman to repeat what he just said, only this time more slowly. It's a

86 86

burden we'll just have to live with... Anyway, back to our (in) famous Red-knobbed Coot. This bird differs from the Common Coot by having two red knobs on its forehead, other than that it is almost identical, but unlike the Common Coot it is a critically endangered species in Europe. Loss of habitat and different food requirements for this bird led the European Commission to propose an action plan in 1999, part of which was to reintroduce the species in controlled areas which included the nearby El Hondo reserve near Elche – other reintroductions took place in suitable habitats in Valencia, Majorca and Andalusia. It is likely that the bird found in the Clot has come from the El Hondo reintroduction scheme – if you really want to see one, the best place is the pool beside the visitor centre for El Hondo near the village of Sant Felip Neri, but if you are feeling really intrepid you should examine all the Coots in the Clot to see if any of them have knobs on! My picture was taken earlier this year at El Hondo, and shows a parent bird feeding its chick, perhaps the very same chick that has now grown up and strayed into the Clot! There seems to be some movement on the unfortunate naming front for this bird – some authorities are starting to call it the Crested Coot, although it must be said this doesn't describe it quite as accurately! You can see more of the birds in our area by visiting my site at: http://marketheridge.smugmug.com/ See you next month
