Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.com Q: Medical Centre Hi Lou & Ged, I have a big complaint to make about the way I have been treated at the Doctor's. Would you know whom I complain to? The woman has had me in tears every time I go up to the GA medical centre. I went to get a prescription as I had run out of meds, and she was rude, chucked my paperwork at me, and said she does not have appointments for me. She is like this every time I go up there. This is why I hate going if I'm ill. I was crying, as there was no need to treat people like this. I spoke in my limited Spanish, and also had in writing what I needed. Many thanks Answer by GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela: Regarding the issue of having English speaking staff, we have requested this from Sanidad since this is a very touristy area with a high foreign population. However, in Spain it is not a mandatory condition that health personnel speak English. In our future meetings with Sanidad we will be asking them to extend the hours of the Gran Alacant Medical Centre so that it operates 24 hours and will continue to request an English speaking person.
Gran Alacant has no astro turf pitches, but Santa Pola has a few of them. I read in last month's magazine that there is soon to be the opportunity for 8 more pitches in Santa Pola. With the amount of money going into the Town Hall from residents here on Gran Alacant, surely we can for once, be first in the queue. Barry Answer by Sports Councillor Julio Miguel Baeza Andreu: The good news is that the budget for the improvements has been approved and this includes placing an astro turf pitch at the GA Sports centre in the foreseeable future. Q: Neighbour blocking view Dear Lou and Ged, I expect you have had similar letters before, but we have had a top floor apartment
Q: Astro Turf Four years ago I started up the Gran Alacant Walking football club and it is still going exceptionally well. I was astounded that there was no astro turf surface to play on. We were offered the inside and outside pitches in the sports centre of Gran Alacant, however, they are both hard surfaces, which are very unforgiving if you fall over.

on Altomar 2 for 17 years now. For a lot of this time we have been troubled by a Spanish gentleman next door, who insists on blocking our view with structures and random large objects. When we finally arrived here from England this year we found that he had built the dividing wall up and deposited cat excrement on our side (which we cannot prove of course). We have contacted the administration - but what more can we do? It is causing my wife and I a lot of stress and unhappiness. John Answer by GA Councillor Oscar Valenzuela: Please first of all contact the administrators to check the rules regarding the height and try to reach an agreement with your neighbour with the help of administrators. Another option is to report them to the Town Hall for not complying with the law. The final option is a direct civil complaint to the court. LATEST NEWS FROM THE GA COUNCILLOR OSCAR VALENZUELA
23rd August On the 23rd of August the canal that crosses Avenida Noruega near the church was cleaned, to help prevent the type of
5
flooding that has happened here in previous years. In a few months this problem will be solved long term as we have recently been awarded a regional subsidy for urban areas that are susceptible to flooding. 30th August The area adjacent to the market is being cleared due to the risk of fire due to the accumulation of dry vegetation, dog excrement and packaging, paper and cardboard.
BEFORE
AFTER
We are still at high risk of fire and must do our part by taking extreme precautions and taking care not to leave packaging and garbage. 6th/9th and 14th September In the first few weeks of this month the department of cleaning, rubbish, parks and gardens has brought in additional staff to help with the cleaning and pruning of the parks, play areas and rubbish bins.

11th September We have committed ourselves to a plan for a Football field in Gran Alacant and you can see the breakdown of the budgets from the Treasury Councilor in the video on my Facebook. We hope that this budget will be approved promptly. 13th September Today we continued with the preventive spraying plan against the mosquito as the recent heat and rains has brought another plague.
16th September Further to the request by the Santa Pola Council, on the 15th of September
6
the Director General for Educational Infrastructures, Victor Garcia i Tomás, the Territorial Director of Education, David Vento and the Chief of the Educational Infrastructure Service visited the schools in Santa Pola and Gran Alacant so that they could see for themselves the urgent need for a second Primary school in Gran Alacant and why it makes sense to give the go ahead for an annex of the Santa Pola IES Cap de L’Aljub to be established next to the Sports Centre in Gran Alacant while the new IES Gran Alacant (Instituto/Secondary School) is being built. At the moment the construction of the IES Gran Alacant will be put out to tender in October/November, so it is going to take a few years before it can open its doors. The AMPAs, inspectors, institutes and political groups agreed that having an annex of IES Cap de L’Aljub, would be the best interim solution a year and a half ago and the Director has promised to study the issue to decide the best legal way to carry it out. During the visit the Director also commented on how pleased he was with the actions that were recently carried out to ensure that the new school year could start as normal.

POST OFFICE IMPROVEMENTS FINALLY BEGIN!
The Post Office in Gran Alacant is undergoing a major remodel by the Santa Pola Department of Infrastructures and Works. Back in April, the Santa Pola Council in a meeting with the Head of the Technical sector, the Director of the Post Office and the Gran Alacant Residents Association committed itself to address the issues in a two-phase project. The first phase will provide a more accessible and shaded entrance by making use of the area behind the current building and will add a small waiting room with a toilet to better facilitiate the public. Furniture will be provided during the
8
second phase and the City Council will then be able to request an extension of hours and staff which will be supported by the Head of the Technical Sector and the Management of the Santa Pola Office. It is hoped that this request will be approved and come into effect quickly. The Gran Alacant Neighbourhood Association has also committed to collaborating with the Area Distribution Manager of the Post Office to improve delivery efficiency and solve the ongoing problems that residents encounter on a daily basis. This will be done with the assistance of the volunteer representatives of each urbanization.

This extraordinary book The Island of Sea Woman illuminates the unique and unforgettable culture of these remarkable female divers. It is the story of 2 young women, Mi-ja and Young, who are part of the all-female diving collective from their village on the island of Jeju off South Korea. It is set during the Japanese colonization of the 1920’s and 30’s, the Second World War and the Korean War. Over the decades forces beyond their control push their friendship to breaking point. It is a story of women’s daring, heartbreak, strength and forgiveness.

TERRY TALKS
Alcohol free opinion & Chat terry@montelinvestments.co.uk
BANKS … WHAT ARE THEY GOOD FOR? Proof somebody reads my articles. After last month’s rant about Gran Alacant’s street layout Brian replied: “Hi Lou and Ged, just read Terry's article about problems with finding addresses in Gran Alacant. Whenever I order something online, I usually have to meet the courier because he cannot find my house. The situation is not helped by MASA's notion that all their properties need two numbers, WHY?” The biggest problem seems to be the Spanish postcode system, which is useless. Look up 03130 online you will see that it covers all Santa Pola, Gran Alacant and a few other towns. Total area of 44 to 58 sq km, depending which site you check, with a population over 30000 people and thousands of properties. It is hardly surprising there are problems. To compare I checked my father's postcode in Sheffield, that covers around 50 houses! BANKS … WHAT ARE THEY GOOD FOR? As an ex banker (not cockney rhyming slang I hasten to add) I have experience of banking institutions. As a business owner here in GA none of my experiences have been pleasant. The pandemic has encouraged us all to move away from cash, which in itself is not bad, it is nice to be able to use a card now rather than carry a lot of cash, and I am less paranoid about paying everything with the 50 euro note that once again the ATM has handed me. The problem is however the Banks have moved even faster in their attempt to do away with branch banking. Counter service not being available after
40
11am is a recent introduction, so don’t even attempt going in after your morning coffee. Staffing levels at all-time lows. In my day we had an enquiries counter, with separate tills. The fact is every time I visit the bank I am inevitably waiting behind the one customer who wants to enquire after 23 Direct Debits, and discuss the health of his cat. These are petty complaints compared to the one that seriously gets my goat. We have all heard of Sex Discrimination, and Race Discrimination, but how often do we hear of Age Discrimination? Banking is rife with it. Not every person is blessed with the latest Mobile phone, or the most up to date Laptop, or even one at all. But every deal you get, whether that be interest rate, insurance cover, or loan rate is best obtained online. Now Gran Alacant is not populated, certainly from an Expat perspective, with teenagers. As a consequence many people are paying 100’s more euros in insurance premiums, lost interest, or excessive loan interest than they could be if they were more IT savy. Being confident in anything often comes down to usage, and if you happen to be in your 70’s or older and retired, there’s a probability your computer usage is minimal and as such learning new processes you barely use can be difficult. You are consequently being directly discriminated against. I would suggest everyone should attempt to get a degree of computer literacy. We will not change the world of banking, but we may be able to change ourselves. Seek out lessons, the cost will be far outweighed by the savings, I am sure of that!
TERRY TALKS
Another issue is surrounding security. We are forever told to be aware of scammers, and internet thieves, I check my bank entries regularly to keep the books balanced, but it’s annoying when you come across a description that means nothing. For example, Gran Alacants pharmacy is Happy Molita on your Bank Statement. They should be compelled to use their branded name. So often I stare at my bank account trying desperately to remember if/ where I spent that 50 euros! Dangerous and very easy for scammers to slip something by you. I am writing this from the UK. My first visit to family for 20 months. This also links to the topic of age discrimination. I have had to complete a passenger location form, do a pre covid test and the 2-day test. Certainly, the day 2 test would be impossible to do without a smart phone to register it, or order it. You need a car to get to the nearest drop box after you’ve
self-tested. I am in Birmingham the second biggest city in the UK and it was an hour round trip in a car to get to the closest one. Oh and of course, as it was a home test I could have got anyone to take it on my behalf. Totally pointless exercise. Let us hope they are abandoned soon. So if you are elderly with no smart phone, have limited IT skills, and have no car, do not bother going back to the UK. Good news on the COVID front 94.7% of everyone over 40 now fully vaccinated, along with 71.2% of 30-39 year olds and 68.6% of 20-29 years old. And whilst Boris prevaricates over getting over 12’s jabbed here 79.2% have had their first vaccine and 58.4% are fully vaccinated. So don’t be afraid of Spain, come and enjoy the Autumn sun. A time of the year when you do not have to hide in the shade, but kick back in glorious sunshine end enjoy a vino or 10.

OASIS IN THE DESERT The River Segura is one of the largest and most important rivers in Southern Spain; it runs through the provinces of Albacete, Murcia and into Alicante province, all the way to Guardamar. It brings life in abundance to the land surrounding its valley. Amongst the gifts it bestows are natural springs that have been enjoyed for centuries by visitors seeking both health and pleasure. We visited one of the most famous springs for Juan’s birthday at the end of August. The otherwise nondescript town of Archena hides a secret world of victorian grandeur containing not just a complex of historic hotels but also a casino, baths and even its own gothic revival church. This extraordinary self-contained complex was originally constructed in the mid-19th century as a fashionable resort in which to sample the health-giving properties of bathing in the natural waters found at Archena on the banks of the Rio Segura. The site had been previously put to similar use by the former Roman and Muslim inhabitants and there are fascinating archeological remains of previous baths from ancient and medieval times.
many original features and has more than a little of the atmosphere of the Grand Hotel Budapest! The central purpose of the complex is to enjoy the baths. The modern complex of baths can be used by both day visitors and guests staying in the hotels. The pool complex consists of a series of outdoor and covered pools where one is able to while away the hours enjoying water in all its various forms; not just swimming but also powered wave channels, fountains to sit under, jacuzzi massage pools and all manner of ingenious ways of being sprinkled, pummeled, fizzed and soothed by water! The atmosphere, as one would expect in Spain, is lively with many families coming for the day reclining on sun loungers or having drinks at the bar when out of the pools. We spent the first day of our stay in the pools and have seldom spent a more relaxing day; as novices to such things, we were delighted by the entire experience.
The current complex of buildings includes historic buildings such as the Hotels Leon (1858) and Termas (1868), the casino (1898) and the church (1878) as well as an ultramodern pool and health spa complex and a modern hotel. The casino was closed in the 1920s by the dictator Primo de Rivera who disapproved of gambling and is now a delightful cafe and bar set in its own palm garden; the church however still fulfills The second day was more serious and its original purpose and is popular for started with a visit to the spa and health weddings. centre attached to the pool complex. Here one partakes of various regimes of massage, We stayed in the majestic Hotel Termas steam rooms and salt pools designed to which, although restored, still contains invigorate the body.

HOME TURF CARABASSI CENTRE
For an authentic Victorian experience, it is also possible to undertake the treatments in the original Moorish style treatment rooms in the basement of the Hotel Termas. After passing ourselves into the skilled hands of the friendly staff, we enjoyed a couple of hours of treatments that did indeed leave us feeling better in mind and body.
One of the pleasures of a visit to Archena is to be able to walk along the riverbank following a network of paths restored by the local town council and shaded by the abundant trees that take advantage of the river as a scarce source of water in the parched lands of Murcia. The entire valley is like a ribbon of oases bringing green life to the desert. Along from the spring complex there is even an artificial river beach created by the local council and hugely popular with local people who swim and picnic at the site. The entire valley is a slice of watery paradise. It is also a major centre of river rafting - but that experience will have to wait for another visit!
After finishing our visit to the complex, we drove inland along the river valley of Ricote to explore some of the ancient river landscape and towns, Ojós, Ulea and Blanca. The patterns of irrigation and agriculture established in ancient times and enhanced in the Muslim, medieval periods are easy to see, and one is truly driving through a historic landscape where the rhythm of life has hardly changed in many hundreds of years.
We recommend a visit to the River Segura valley for anyone who wishes to enjoy a break from the coast. A trip to the valley is to step into a different world where one can catch a flavour of past times, be it the refined world of a Victorian spa hotel or an ancient Spanish landscape of cultivation and irrigation. The Summer Fair @ Dunbars raised 1000€
THE SUMMER FAIR AT DUNBARS Another great day was had by all at Dunbars Bar and Restaurant who held a Summer Fair to help the charity A Helping Hand. There was great support throughout the day and over €1000 was raised to help families and individuals who are in need and have struggled as a result of the pandemic. The Summer Fair was a great success with stallholders of local artists and craftspeople to showcase their talents, which included The Secret Shed Woodworks, Kreationz, Football Mania, Stupot´s Arts and Mrs. Sew and Sew. ´Street food´ from Dunbars went down a treat and the fare had all the usual trimmings of a tombola and raffle with the prizes being donated by individuals and local businesses in Gran Alacant. A special thank you goes out to those who helped to make the day happen Pam for organising the stallholders, Margaret for her tireless work with the tombola and Gill for selling the tickets for the raffle.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
MARBLED DUCK was just one of the captive breeding sites in Spain.
Well that felt a lot longer than nearly two years, and the frustration of not being able to visit the Costa Blanca was tempered by the knowledge that sooner or later I would be back. One of the things I promised myself was that when I did return, my next article for the GA Advertiser would be about the first bird I saw on my return. I had to do a quick reverse on that promise, as I don't think you would have been interested in House Sparrows or Starlings which of course are abundant around everyone's house, but my first trip down to the Clot in early September found one of the big success stories of the pandemic shutdown – the captive breeding programme of the endangered Marbled Duck, and the results were immediately evident! Sitting on a log in the scrape area of the Clot were at least six of these birds, with more cruising around on the water. At the height of the pandemic in 2020. a group of 30 of these rare ducks were raised in the Clot in protective cages. Some of you may have seen the video posted on the Clot de Galvany Facebook page showing how these birds were released in the Spring under the auspices of the Elche Council Environment Department in collaboration with the Valencian Wildlife Service – this
88 88
You can't just release rare birds and hope for the best – you have to make sure that the conditions are right for them to live and breed in the area, and to this end it is evident that a lot of work has been done. Marbled Teals have specific requirements including medium sized pools with plenty of reedbed cover, and the area known as the scrape (the patch next to the Charco pool) has been deepened from its previous shallow state whilst preserving stands of reeds to provide cover. You may also see them on the Charco pool, but they generally avoid the large central lagoon. You will also notice that nesting boxes for these birds have been erected in suitable areas. Some of these birds are migratory, wintering from North Africa down to the Sahel south of the Sahara, but a fair number of them will remain in our area throughout the year. The greatest dangers to them are loss of habitat, and more depressingly they are being shot by hunters who know neither that the bird is fully protected, nor indeed exactly what type of duck they are aiming at, and the poor Marbled Duck is a very easy target. A final thought on the chap in my picture – eagle-eyed readers may have noticed that he is wearing a slightly unfortunate leg ring. Let's hope he doesn't accidentally migrate to the UK, where although he would be a welcome rarity, he might also become an object of derision... You can see more photos of our local wildlife by visiting https://marketheridge.smugmug.com/

Grooming Service Available calculating the exact moment when the eruption was going to start, in order to warn authorities into time and avoid the loss of human and animal lives. Another people to thank is volunteers who are taking care of refugees who had to leave their homes and their animals (livestock and pets).
These last days, breaking news from Canary Islands have appeared at mass media, because of the eruption of Teneguia volcano at La Palma island. Scientists detected the incoming eruption several days in advance just studying the thousands of small earthquakes the island suffered since the middle of August, so, from that moment, a special operation rescue started, and this operation, of course, included evacuation of pets and other domestic animals. From the moment volcanologists detected the eruption was about to start, people were advised to leave their homes before it was too late. Many of these country houses had livestock and companion animals. Livestock was moved to livestock fair facilities in the island, where they are going to stay till the situation is back to normal, and companion pets have been taken to rescue centres or fostering homes in case joining their owners at the evacuation was impossible. Some of these rescue centres need help for relocating animals and to feed them. Donations via Internet are possible and welcome. Despite the enormity of the tragedy, so far no animal or human casualties have been reported. Thanks to the scientists, engineers and other specialists who have been watching over permanently and

There are worldwide associations for animal rescue in case of natural catastrophes. A good example would be worldanimalprotection/ animalesendesastre.org. In other cases this tasks are managed by governments. We live in a highly urbanized area, in which there are not big extensions of terrain with wildlife. If a disaster happens, we can take our pets with us, but in other areas managing livestock and wildlife is crucial for their recovery after a disaster, and this includes economy, ecosystems and families. These kind of organizations are very important in South America, and their members tasks include animal protection, construction of temporary shelters, Veterinary services, prevention of contagious diseases, which appear very easily when there is a high number of animals living together, and to keep them safe until they are able to return to their homes. This last summer, we have had several wildfires in Spain. In this case, there are no livestock of companion pets to rescue, so all they can do is to help injured wild animals. When this happens, there are volunteers from local Veterinary Colleges who search for injured animals.

At the time of writing this article, Moises is attempting to book the Wednesday 11am slots for 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th October. We will advise everyone once we get confirmation. On the social side, tickets for Elche home games are now becoming available. We are in the process of trying to co-ordinate purchases so people interested can share transport and sit together.

THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GRAN ALACANT RUNNERS If you want to join us contact Geoff 0044/ 747 685 1356 It has been a busy month for us. On 29 August Rob ran the Santa Pola 6k Amancer organised by Club Atletismo, Santa Pola. This was the first sports participation event in Santa Pola since the restrictions began and attracted over 1000 runners in what has been described as a great run around Santa Pola.
End to End Ltd who issued us with certificates to commemorate our achievement.
John has finished his Running Streak, calling it a day after over 331 days of continuous running, in all conditions. This is a marvellous achievement by John but it is not the first time he has taken on a running Streak having previously run for 365 consecutive days. However, the longest recorded Running Streak ended in 2017 when Britain, Ron Hill, at 78 years old ran his last mile, thus completing 52 years and 39 days of continuous running.
Geoff World Record Attempt Graeme ran in the Great North Run (21k) in just over 90 minutes. Staffan ran in the Stockholm Half Marathon in 102 minutes, John and Mike run at Park Run on a Saturdays, Philippe is recovering from treatment on his knee and has made 2-3 runs during his recovery and Jeanne continues to run 3-4 times a week.
John at Park Run Claudia and Brigitte have completed their endurance run where respectively they ran 64.83 miles (104.32km) in 14 hrs and 30 min and 53.5 miles (86.1km) in 14 hrs 53 min. Another astonishing feat! A number of runners took part in a successful World Record attempt for the most people to complete a remote 5k in 24 hours. The event was organised by Run

I have known Donna for about 10 years and during that time she has occasionally gone for a 2-3 mile walk, but nothing concerted. Last year however, during lockdown, she started walking on a regular basis, despite her sore hip and knee. She started to lose weight, the walking got easier, the distances she walked increased, her knee and hip problems were less of an issue and then she started the Couch to 5km programme which combines walking with some gentle running, with a view to running 5km. She has now completed 3 x 5k runs, has signed up for Park Run and is working towards eventually running 10k. I met up with her in GA this week and joined her on a gentle run.
