We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk We would like to say a big Thank You to all the local businesses that have been continuing to support our community magazine throughout this global pandemic. Since the UK Government imposed a Quarantine on people returning to the UK from Spain, local businesses have suffered a huge loss and are a lot quieter than usual as many tourists that would normally enjoy Gran Alacant throughout the Summer months have been unable to do so. We encourage the residents of Gran Alacant to continue to support our local businesses during this unusual time.
Thank you All Ged & Lou x
Our local businesses and community are continuing to abide by the latest restrictions that have been imposed by local, regional and country wide rulings, due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. At the time of writing the restrictions have been amended so that discos, dance halls, cocktail bars and karaoke bars are no longer allowed to open. Places that serve food have to close at 1:00 am and are not allowed to accept new customers after midnight. Tables must be separated by at least 1.5m and only groups of 10 or less people are allowed to sit together. Smoking has been banned on public roads, terraces or beaches without an interpersonal distance of 2 metres. Drinking has also been banned on public roads. New residents in Care Homes have to undergo PCR screening and visits to residents are limited to 1 person per day for a maximum of 1 hour. It has also been recommended that wherever possible social gatherings should be with people you live with. If you meet with people who you do not live with then there should be no more than 10 people in the group.

the level of pests in specific areas of Gran Alacant (see just a few examples above ... ) MOSQUITOES The joint fumigation plan between Elche and Santa Pola has continued to help prevent a serious mosquito infestation. This plan covers all areas of Gran Alacant and will continue weekly throughout September. Especially with the recent heat waves, it is crucial that fumigation is maintained to avoid a serious outbreak. However, it is impossible to completely eradicate the mosquitoes and it is important that residents of Gran Alacant continue to play their part by regularly emptying water from containers on their properties!!!

CLEANING OF BINS The Council of cleaning, parks and gardens have responded to complaints about the cleaning of the bin container areas and have increased their cleaning schedule.
CLEARING OF AREAS BY PUERTO MARINO After requests from the neighbourhood association in the Puerto Marino Urbanisation, heavy machinery and equipment were brought in to clear and clean the areas adjacent to the Urb. They also cleared the area around the storm drains as this often causes problems in the event of torrential rain.

POST OFFICE
The ongoing situation regarding the inadequate service provided by the postal service in Gran Alacant continues. The limited opening hours, number of staff and difficulty in accessing the building are ongoing issues for residents, who also during the Summer months are forced to wait outside in the scorching heat. Across Alicante, Elche and Santa Pola the postal service has suffered from the Covi-19 epidemic and this has not been helped by the increased number of customers during the Summer months. The Gran Alacant Council in coordination with the Mayor’s Office and Gran Alacant Residents Association, have held conversations with the postal service offering incentives including the transfer of municipal land and assignment of municipal taxes to help facilitate a solution to this issue. In February an official request was made by the Mayor’s Office to extend the hours from 8:30 am to 6:30pm. The postal services´ official answer was “At the Gran Alacant office, the competent management units have been consulted and report that the postal service offered is provided normally”. The Gran Alacant Council does not agree with this statement and are continuing to look for solutions to solve this problem in the short, medium and long term. RETURN TO SCHOOL IN SEPTEMBER In July, the Spanish Ministry of Education issued new measures that will need to be taken when the new term of school starts in September. However, the ongoing issues of extreme overcrowding in the Gran Alacant Primary School and the continuing lack of an Instituto for Secondary education, mean that these measures are going to be difficult to implement. The new measures do not take into account the separation of children

LARGE SKIP IN FRONT OF GABE MARKET Dear Lou & Ged, Nice to see people are using the big skip provided for residents to dispose of large items. Hopefully, this will reduce the amount left by bins and that everybody knows it’s there. Kind Regards, Alison It’s a skip for unwanted furniture etc. installed by Urbaser in Gran Alacant next to Avenida Noruega for the use of all residents and only available until the end of August but hopefully this great idea will be repeated next summer again! Please remember that Urbaser Santa Pola offers the above collection service Message: 686 801 323 for unwanted furniture and other goods. However, garden rubbish and building waste must be taken to the recycling centre. within the classroom, the expansion of patio spaces or the management of dining and transport services. These issues are going to be a huge challenge for school staff, families and students. This issue also extends to the IES Cap del Aljub Instituto in Santa Pola which is the assigned school for the students from Gran Alacant and is also overcrowded. Due to the new measures for Covid-19, the students will not fit in the classrooms and there is great uncertainty about how this situation will be resolved. The Department of Education and Gran Alacant have been in permanent contact with AMPAs and the management of these schools since last year to fully understand the issues and find viable and realistic solutions. There have been continuous meetings with the Ministry of Education right up until the start of lockdown and letters have been sent offering proposed solutions, agreed by all parties. However, there has been no formal response. The Council continues to ask for solutions and deeply regrets that the Department is delaying, without justification or explanation, the development of the infrastructures that are needed to solve this problem. The tender for the second Primary school has been blocked for at least ten months and throughout 2020 the Department has refused to transfer power to the local authorities to build the Instituto in Gran Alacant. This is especially difficult when we have been one of the few municipalities that fulfilled, delivered and corrected all the requirements of the Edificant plan last year.

STAR EMAIL Ashleys Solo Bike Ride from Lands End to John o’Groats
Gran Alacant residents Judy and Kelvin Jones are really proud of their son who has completed a solo cycle ride from Lands End to John o'Groats in aid of “2 Wish Upon a Star”. This local charity provides bereavement support for families who have suddenly or traumatically lost a child or young adult under the age of 25. Ashley chose this particular charity because his son plays Rugby with the son of the Charity founder who sadly lost a child. Ashley said that the steep inclines and bad weather were challenging but everyone's messages, pictures and donations helped keep him motivated. He completed the almost 1,000 mile ride in 9 ½ days at the end of July/beginning of August 2020.
Donations are being accepted up until the end of September and can be made via: www.justgiving.com and search for Ash Jones

Speaking to many people in the last month it seems that many of us have experienced an increase in hay fever like symptoms, which seems a little prolonged this year, some think it is down to a mixture of the lockdown and being sedentary for several weeks whilst others are just unsure and think it may be down to them cutting the grasses because of lockdown, whatever it may be it can be a big problem for sufferers and I decided to talk about it this month, I hope these tips ease your symptoms if you are a sufferer. Symptoms of hay fever can vary from puffy, itchy, watering eyes to continual sneezing and a runny or congested nose. Hay fever is sometimes confused with a condition called allergic or perennial rhinitis, as the symptoms are similar to those who suffer hay fever, the difference being allergic rhinitis lasts all year round. Common causes of allergic rhinitis include dust, food allergies and atmospheric pollution. Many people with hay fever and allergic rhinitis are also likely to have a sensitivity to certain foods, the most common being wheat and potentially dairy produce. on about drinking the water!) but I can’t stress enough how good drinking water is for the body. In allergy sufferers’ researchers have found that people who are dehydrated suffer more than those who stay hydrated.
HELPFUL TIPS TO EASE THE SYMPTOMS •
Reduce your intake of salt, caffeine and alcohol.
•
Too much sugar greatly lowers the immune system so reduce foods high in sugar like desserts and sweets.
•
While symptoms are bad avoid milk in any form for at least a week, milk and other dairy products like cheese and chocolate are very mucous forming which won’t help the cause at all. Also avoid food high in saturated fats such as croissants, pastries, cakes and biscuits.
•
Citrus fruits can also worsen symptoms, especially oranges.
•
Stay hydrated (here I go again harping
•
Eat more garlic and onions in your foods when symptoms are unbearable, these foods are high in the flavonoid quercetin, which can help reduce the severity of symptoms.
•
Include plenty of fresh vegetables (and think organic only, non-organic can be sprayed over 25 times with pesticides) also include brown rice and whole grains in your diet.
Next year (if it is definitely seasonal hay fever you experience) before the season kicks in buy a pot of honey, preferably with

the honeycomb still in it, a client told me there is a man at the lemon tree market who sells it with the honeycomb, and take a dessert spoon full daily for about 2 month. The pollen in the honey may protect you from full blown hay fever. Some essential oils are also very good, like
basil and Melissa are great for clearing the sinuses, place a few drops on a tissue to inhale or mix some drops in a carrier oil such as almond or grapeseed and massage the oils into the chest. Invest in a good quality ionizer and leave it near your bed to help reduce any allergens.

Big “Thank you” from Easy Horse Rescue Centre Nestled between the coast and Rojales town is Easy Horsecare Rescue Centre, the only one of its kind on the Costa Brava, that works entirely to rescue, save, heal and care for all abandoned equines. To arrive there is a unique experience. Over 120 horses, donkeys and ponies housed in groups in individual paddocks, with shelters and running water, surrounded by fields and trees. Such a peaceful place, where all the animals (including rescue pigs, a rescue goose named Christmas, rescue peacocks now with young chicks, chickens, cats and dogs) look so content, healthy and happy. One could never believe the horrific backgrounds of starvation, malnutrition, and abandonment and abuse that so many of them have suffered. An amazing witness to what can be achieved by the dedication, hard work and commitment of two people, Sue and Rod Weeding, founders of the Centre. Here the rescues have found a forever home where they have special care, food, water and companionship, and hence are given a second chance at life. Such an enterprise is a huge undertaking both financially and personally as one can imagine. To feed and water one horse per week costs approximately 40 euros, then there is the hoof trimming and shoeing, vet visits and treatments, medications, worming, teeth inspections, maintenance and repairs, phone bills, a total per week of around 5580 euros. The Centre is funded entirely by Donations, Fundraising, Open Days and its Charity Shops. The severe and extended lock-down in Spain has put unprecedented pressure on its resources, with shops closed for so long and the ending of its Open Days (now replaced by the new” daily tours”) it has had to rely on donations only for the last four months as all other means of income were severed, and lack of funds meant they had to let go of the paid workers. “These last few months have seen the arrival of two new donkeys and two horses.
56
One of the donkeys coming with a myriad of problems, alongside his neck shyness indicating fear, malnutrition, worms, neglected feet, painful infection due to untreated wounds and both were entire so had to be castrated. Tamarisk needed stitches for a wound in the field. We had the sad loss of Freda and Miss Ellie. Captain, our eldest horse at 40 years contracted an abscess in his foot which needed treatment, Rosie his companion is suffering badly from her Cushings disease affecting her legs which means we could lose her, Annie too needing ongoing treatment for laminitus. These have been challenging times…. But we have had tremendous support from our growing team of volunteers, who have worked with us to keep the fields clean (no easy task in this hot weather) help with the feeds, grooming, and with our “new” DAILY TOURS. We are so very grateful to them and to our media team who have helped to update our FB and public relations. Also our shops have reopened, and we are so thankful to our shop managers and staff and for the delivery and collection of furniture team… to Dorothea, our vet and Enrike the Farrier… and a huge “THANK YOU” to all the public who continue to follow, support and donate to us… We could not survive without you…” So many people see the vision they hold for these equines, for all animals in Spain and for the ongoing promotion of Animal Welfare here.

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US
by Mark Etheridge
IBERIAN WATER FROG at your approach! It also lives in southern France and has been successfully introduced into the Canary Islands, the Azores and Madeira, as well as the Balearic Islands. It is also reported from a couple of sites in the UK where it has been introduced and is surviving.
I appear to have been quite fortunate – one of the downsides of getting older is the gradual loss of the ability to hear sounds in the higher register, meaning that some birdwatchers of advancing years cannot hear the high-pitched calls of the smaller birds. Fortunately, I am still able to hear them, but even with some degradation, most people will be able to hear the cacophony which occurs regularly in the Clot, which I suppose we will have to call the “Frog Chorus”, a noisy mix of rattling croaks, groans and cackles which can occur at any time of the day or night. The culprit is the Iberian Water Frog, which occurs in Spain and Portugal as its name suggests but it is also known as Perez’s Frog or Iberian Green Frog. Its name in Spanish is Rana Comun, which indicates that it can easily be found in the right areas. The Iberian Water Frog isn’t fussy about its habitat and is found in ponds, lakes, reservoirs, rivers, marshes, and just about anywhere there is freshwater. It is often found breeding in garden ponds and also in water tank reservoirs made for farm irrigation. I have seen several in the Viveros Victor Garden Centre just to the south of La Marina, where there is a small water garden display, although they are difficult to observe as they immediately dive under the water
60 60 60
The Iberian Water Frog is usually some shade of green or brown as an overall colour but sometimes blueish specimens are found. They also sometimes have a yellowish line down their backs, but what we can say with safety is that they are very variable in colour! My photo shows a typical example, the bright green bits are actually water weed! They feed on the usual frog diet of insects, larvae and some vegetation, but unfortunately for the poor Frog it is an important part of the food chain in the Clot, providing a fairly easy meal for Herons, Bitterns, Egrets, Ibises and Marsh Harriers. The tadpoles are also taken by Kingfishers – the recent water improvements may have allowed these birds to breed in the Clot this year – as well as Ducks, Moorhens and Coots. It is just as well that each female produces literally thousands of eggs each year, and just enough survive to maintain the population. One of the strange things about this Frog is that it regularly moults; that is, it sheds its skin. I hope you’re not reading this at your dinner table, because I can tell you that it eats this discarded skin – not quite as gruesome as it sounds, because the skin still contains some important nutrients, and why let it go to waste? You can see more photographs of birds and other animals from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL CLARIFICATION
I tried to write an article last month to include Walking Football in Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. However, this annoyed some members of both clubs. Individual members from Gran Alacant can attend the Santa Pola sessions led by Anthony Young on Mondays and Thursdays. Arrive at 09:30 for a prompt 10:00am start. At the time of writing this article, there is no liklihood of indoor sessions recommencing at the sports centre, beside the outdoor market, anytime soon. Remember, players are asked to arrive wearing kit as the changing rooms are not accessible. Please wear a mask and obey all regulations regarding travelling. Your temperature will be checked on arrival. Social distancing and masks must be worn
until entering the playing area. When entering the playing area, please spread your personal kit out along the touchline. Bibs will be allocated and collected at the end of each session. The Tango bar is open and makes all players and families most welcome after the playing sessions. Please pay attention to whatever social distancing regulations are in place. Please check our facebook page for any changes and/or updates to the current situation. Stay safe everyone John Fraser (WhatsApp 07866 315087) Please check our facebook pages for any changes and/or updates to the current situation.

So far, practically every species could be considered as an exotic pet: lots of birds, mammals and reptiles, such as Vietnamese pigs, geckoes and pogonas are kept in captivity as pets, but many of these animals are not “pets”, since we can’t hold them in our arms, caress them, or take them for a walk... or we shouldn’t do it. Lots of breeders and traders are angry and refuse this new regulation, but we think it’s necessary. A positive list implies only animals included in this list are going to be considered as pets. So far, what lists indicated was forbidden species, because they were dangerous, endangered, or invasive. A good example could be red ear Florida terrapene (Trachemys scripta elegans), which was forbidden 13 years ago. What traders did was to introduce similar terrapenes, such as yellow ears one, taking an advantage of the legal gap. This new regulation will make these trickeries impossible, and will allow to control in a more efficient way the animals we adopt and consider a member of our families. It’s not a matter of eliminating the animals that are already living with us, but avoiding thousands of wild animals living in inadequate conditions. Last week a client asked us for some advice about purchasing a pet for her daughter: the girl wanted a gecko because she had watched at Youtube several videos of people having them as pets and interacting and playing with them; even you can find at
70
Amazon special harnesses for taking them for a walk. Does anybody believe this is a happy life for a reptile? Some years ago, the trend was to have a Vietnamese pig as a pet, because they were supposed to be “very cute and clever”. But when the little pig ends up weighing 50 kg or more, spends most of the day squealing loudly, and doesn’t allow us to hold it anymore, in most cases it “escaped” or was released by their owners. At Vega Baja we have a serious problem with these animals, since tens of feral pigs destroy vegetable gardens and harvests. Probably, the ultimate reason for implementing this new regulation has been the risk of outbreaks of new diseases such as NCoV-19, since the source of most of them have been wild animals. Lots of them are been living with lots of bacteria, viruses and parasites for centuries without suffering any health problem. People and domestic animals have never contacted with them, so their immunity is not prepared to defeat them. About 30% of Florida terrapenes are supposed to be a reservoir of Salmonella, and they eliminate the bacteria continuously in the water via faeces. Every time a person cleans and manipulates terrarium and terrapenes has a risk of catching the disease. Of course, since Salmonellosis is a bacterial disease, it can be treated successfully with antibiotics, but this is not applicable to lots of other diseases.
