Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005. If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.com Q: Parking on pavements Dear Lou & Ged, I have a house on Brisas del Faro 11, which is part of the Urbanisation with Olivo de Oro. I have met with the President of our community as well as our Administrators to complain about cars parking on pavements. Pedestrians are forced to walk on the road and owners cannot properly open gates as cars obstruct them.

I have shown photographs of these cars, explained that on many occasions we cannot fully open our gates but our Administrators say they can do nothing about it. Attached are some photographs. What can we as property owners do about it when our Administrators refuse to do anything other than send emails saying please don’t park on pavements?

Celebrating 200th Edition We are proud to be sharing the 200th edition of the Gran Alacant Advertiser with all our advertisers and readers. When Barry and Sandra first started the magazine in January 2005, they could not have foreseen that it would still be the most popular and trusted magazine in Gran Alacant 200 editions later!!! Ged and I were delighted to take over the magazine in 2015 and have continued to ensure that it remains a valuable resource for everyone in the neighbourhood. Within our pages you will always find the latest news and views from the amazing people who live in our community, and we support all the local businesses by giving them a reliable way to advertise all of their latest offers, entertainment and events with everyone who lives in or visits Gran Alacant. So we really want to say a massive thank you to all of our advertisers and readers, as without you we would not have been able to make the previous 199 editions.

Must one of our children be knocked down before action is taken? Robert Q: Valley Blocking View Hello Lou and Ged, When we bought our apartment in Novamar III, Gran Alacant, we had a beautiful view of the sea.

OSCAR VALENZUELA Kind Regards, Susan Answer from Oscar Valenzuela: Hello Robert and Susan, Thank you both for taking time to send your questions. Both questions are private property issues. You must file a complaint because the city council does not have any authorisation unless it is a public health issue. I encourage you to discuss these problems once again with the Presidents and Administrators of your communities. Q: Sports Centre Hola Oscar, We wonder if you have managed to look into the problem we mentioned previously regarding non-existing astro-turf facilities in Gran Alacant. Muchas gracias, John Fraser Gran Alacant Walking Football Reply by Sports Councillor Julio M. Andreu: Hi John, In regards to your question we are working on the change. We have asked for a grant and are currently waiting for the answer. We also depend on the new municipal budget. 24th July Progress of the Instituto and 2nd Primary school in Gran Alacant. On Thursday the 22nd July a video conference was held with the infrastructure department of Education and I would like to share what was said in regard to Gran Alacant. First of all there is good news in regard to the construction of the new Instituto (secondary school) in Gran Alacant. An investment of more than €11 million has been planned for the budgets of 2021, 2022 and 2023 and if there are no delays then the school could be operational in 2025. Whilst this is great news in the long term, it doesn´t address the short term issue of overcrowding in the IES Cap de L´ Aljub in Santa Pola, which is currently where all the secondary school aged children from Gran Alacant have to go. 18months ago it was proposed to place portacabins on the plot next to the Jose Antonion Alemany sports centre, that would be an annex of the Cap de L´ Aljub Instituto in Santa Pola , so that the students from Gran Alacant can go there until the Gran Alacant Instituto is constructed. However, although it has been approved by AMPAs, inspectors and fully supported by the Santa Pola Town Hall, it is currently not a priority within the educational department. The Town Hall will continue to push this issue with

Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY. Please message this number T: 686 801 323 any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on. This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy. the hope that it can be brought forward in the list of priorities with the educational department. With regard to the second Primary School in Gran Alacant, we were informed that its construction is next on the list of priorities, and although it was supposed to be put out to tender during the Summer, there have been delays caused by changes in the organisational structure. It will therefore be put out to tender in October and we trust that we will soon be able to plan dates for construction to begin. 27th July As we were predicted to have heavy rain, the department of cleaning, parks and gardens mobilized a large group of workers to clear the areas in Noruega and Carabassi Avenues to prevent the issues that previous heavy downpours have suffered from. Throughout July and August the team has worked hard to clean and clear the footpaths and rubbish bin areas and are continuing to maintain the parks and public areas of our neighbourhood, including the dog park. 4th August We are continuing to work with Elche City Council to prevent severe mosquito outbreaks throughout the Summer.

5th August Santa Pola Mayoress Loreto Serrano has again asked the department of public works to see if they can progress the words that have been planned and approved for access to Gran Alacant and Santa Pola along the N332, which we all know is extremely hazardous and has unfortunately been the site of a number of accidents. We are hopeful that they will be able to award budgets to the Town Hall to progress the plans as quickly as possible. 11th August Councillor Julio Baeza has shared two exciting projects that are currently underway, these are for a basketball track that already has been granted funding and 8 football fields that he hopes will be included in the upcoming budgets. The road is long and there are many difficulties but slowly we will improve the neighbourhood. 14th August In collaboration with the Gran Alacant Neighbourhood Association, we have started a campaign to promote the registration on the padron of all residents of Gran Alacant. It is really important that ALL residents register on the padron as the more people that are registered, the greater the amount of resources we will be allocated to make improvements to our neighbourhood.

If you would like to supply news or info for our next edition, or have a question for Gran Alacant Councillor Oscar Pedro Valenzuela, please email: info@granalacantadvertiser.com

Stage 8 of cycling’s La Vuelta de España started in Santa Pola on Saturday 21 August, with both the town and Gran Alacant bursting at the seams in the sweltering weather. After the previous day’s mountain stage - the toughest test yet of this year’s tour ending with a steep climb up to Balcón de Alicante - the teams used the new hotel in GA overnight before a 1pm start on Avenida Santiago Bernabéu and an easier sprint stage down to La Manga. With La Vuelta being part of the Grand Tours, alongside the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia, there was plenty of interest in the race with crowds gathering all the way along the route out of town. While the racing did not start properly until the peloton turned off Avenida Cristobal Sanz onto the N332, the viewers were treated to some great sights like the riders cycling through the castle and the streets before venturing along the marina on their way out of town. And of course, a worldwide television audience were treated to marvellous overhead views of our amazing coastline and local area. The stage was won in La Manga by Dutch rider Fabio Jakobsen. Thank you Andy & John for great pics and sharing your experience with us!

BOOK CLUB GRAN ALACANT TRUST US Book of the month by Beth If you enjoy the mystery and intrigue in Scandinavian noir you will certainly like this author! My Recommended Book of the Month Lars Mytting The Sixteen Trees of the Somme

Beth worked as a Qualified Librarian in Aberdeen for 20 years. She loves reading and delights in finding exciting new authors as well as reverting back to favourite writers of all genres. Beth has lived in Gran Alacant for the last 15 years.

Edvard lives on a remote farm in Norway with his taciturn grandfather. The death of his parents when he was 3 has always been shrouded in mystery. His desperate quest to unlock this family’s secrets takes Edvard on a long journey - from Norway to the Shetlands, and to the battlefields of France – to the discovery of a very unusual inheritance. This is an intricate story about war, family and secrets. It is cleverly plotted and certainly held my attention right to the end.

HELP IM LOST! Now I love Gran Alacant, I know my way around, but more by instinct than by any assistance of maps or GPS. I often wonder who named the streets. I suggest it was somebody with no sense of direction or a very limited geographical knowledge. I live in Calle Creta 61, cross the road, and the other street is Calle Creta something else. Go to the end of my street and there’s Calle Creta something else again.

your car in for a service at Spazio. I have never seen it so busy! Bars and Restaurants are finally able to look at making a living. So please do pop by and use them. It must have been awful for so long worrying about how they were going to put food on their own plates, never mind someone else’s. As we creep slowly to the end of the pandemic, I have a few words of advice for the Chinese biologists and researchers:

I used to live In Calle Holanda. Number 5 is about 400 meters away from number 5a.

NEXT TIME CLOSE THE BLOODY WINDOW!

There is Calle Polonia, Avenida Noruega, Calle Luxemburg Avenida Belgica, and many more, but no Calle Inglaterra or Reino Unido (UK). Maybe they realise us Brits have a homing instinct even after a few cervezas.

Football is back, after a quite successful summer the old rivalries are back. As a Birmingham City fan, with mostly Villa fans as friends I think I am going to hide until it is over again in April next year.

Not surprising post goes AWOL. To be honest I think we have probably lost a few Postmen over the years. Probably half the beggars outside our supermarkets are just Correos lost on their way back to the office.

Finally, I want to say goodbye to some good friends and wish them luck. Gary and Rayner Forster have moved from GA to Finnestrat this week. Benidorm and the surrounding area will not know what has hit them. Our local Looky Looky man Mohammed is distraught, having sold most of hist stock to Gary over the last decade or so.

It is nice to see life slowly returning to normal. Bars and restaurants getting busier by the day. Considering Brit visitors are still not here in big numbers, other guests whether from Spain or other European countries are here in their droves. I swear you will soon only be able to park at the Mercadona car park if you have booked

That’s it for this month. Enjoy the remainder of the Summer. Support our local services; let us get GA back on its feet. Onwards and upwards.

Disagree with anything? What an opinion you have discussed? Message me on terry@montelinvestments.co.uk (putting Terry Talks in the subject matter) Or you can comment on the online version of the magazine on facebook.

Home Turf Music to the ears

Live music is one thing that has been most missed during the pandemic period. That special experience of being in an audience when musicians and performers work magic from thin air has been denied due to the health emergency. Obviously it will be a while yet before we can gather together rubbing shoulders in crowded basements or rooms above bars to hear bands; however some musical life is returning to open air and socially distanced venues. We took the opportunity to experience three concerts held at Muelle 12 in the Alicante Harbour.

The Muelle 12 venue by Grupo Marcos is a large temporary open air concert stage built on the quayside opposite the Volvo Ocean Race sailing museum at the farthest end of Alicante harbour. The venue is one of a number of open air summer venues in the outer harbour including restaurants, pop up bars and a night club. This music venue is holding a programme of concerts throughout the summer held in a carefully distanced and well run atmosphere. The venue is adjacent to a large bar and food area where it is possible to enjoy a drink and street food meal before or after the concerts. The concerts are naturally all seated due to the current health restrictions.

60

The first concert we attended was Juan Perro. He is one of the grand old men of Spanish popular music, having been part of the famous “Movida” scene in Madrid in the years immediately following the end of the dictatorship. Formerly a rock musician and member of the band Radio Futura, his current work is heavily influenced by jazz and cuban beats. He created a layered and joyful soundscape perfectly suited to a summer Sunday evening. The respect and affection in which he is held was evident from the audience’s reception for him and his band. The evening was a real pleasure and it was special to see one of modern Spain’s musical heroes leading the way back to live performance. We loved the experience so we booked a second concert, this one was a more contemporary affair: Lori Meyers are one of the biggest rock bands in Spain and have toured all over the world to great acclaim, including extended recent tours of the US. The band, who originate in the Granada region, are masters of melodic indie influenced rock and put on a show of one storming song after another to the audience’s obvious delight. Tracks such as “Siempre brilla el sol” and “El

HOME TURF CARABASSI CENTRE

tiempo pasará” brought the crowd to its feet, requiring reminders by the venue stewards to remain seated and observe social distancing. There are few things to compare with a great band at the height of its powers and seeing Lori Meyers hold an adoring audience in the palms of their hands was a reminder of how much life we have all foregone in the last eighteen months.

over to Alicante and enjoyed a great concert. Despite the name, this band has no connections with Sweden, the band is actually local, most members are from Murcia with connections to Alicante so there were many loyal fans singing along to every tune. Once again, the music, the venue and city of Alicante delivered an unforgettable musical evening.

The final concert of our trio of visits to the stage at Muelle 12 was a band called Viva Suecia (Long life to Sweden). This concert was unexpected, a good friend had some spare tickets and we got the call at the very last minute. After two great concerts we did not hesitate to accept the invitation, drove

The joy of seeing and hearing live music was greater than we had expected; the anticipation of the show, being amongst a crowd of strangers, being carried along by music without conscious thought, the observing of the familiar rituals of a music concert such as a late start and extended encores, all of those things that make live music a uniquely special thing were present at these concerts and we recommend everyone to make an effort to start seeing live music again. The artists and venues need our support and we in turn need to remember why, despite being “only rock n’ roll”, we like it more than we sometimes admit! WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? TRUST US

by Mark Etheridge

SANDERLING back, which leads to some confusingly coloured birds when they arrive with us as they gradually moult into the non-breeding plumage you see here.

I’m trying to remember the name of those little toys we had when we were very young – you know, those small two-legged objects which you placed on a slope and the toy went down the slope with its legs going at ten to the dozen? Minutes if not hours of fun for small minds, we were easily amused at a tender age. I remember these toys particularly at this time of the year, when these little birds return to coastlines all around Europe. This is a Sanderling, and you can recognise them fairly easily when you see one, because of its comical high-speed running along the shoreline. If you can find a quiet sandy beach in our area (yes, I know!), the chances are fairly high that you will find one running about just like our childhood toy, as it explores the area right on the tide line, picking up food and then running away as the waves move in and out. If you look very closely at it, you may notice a strange thing (unfortunately not visible in my photograph) – unlike other small waders it has no hind toe. The photo shows a bird developing its non-breeding plumage, almost silvery-white with mostly black mottled shoulders and wings. During the breeding season, they have a black and tawny brown plumage on their head and

90 90

Given that they only arrive here around late summer, where have they been? They breed in the high Arctic, using the tundra areas of Russia, North America, Greenland and Spitzbergen, arriving there in early March and then dispersing southwards from late July onwards, which means that they are widely distributed around most of the world’s coastal areas. They can travel up to 6,000 miles on their migration, and you can see them on any coastal area around Spain (and indeed the UK), sometimes in spectacular numbers. There’s no need for them to try to reach their more distant winter grounds in any great hurry, so when they find good feeding grounds they will stick around for long periods before moving on. So why do they scamper around like that? They are feeding on small invertebrates which reside in the inter-tidal areas – these animals come to the surface of the mud or sand as the water advances and retreats, and the Sanderling can profit from this – but the invertebrates leave no sign of their presence, so the Sanderling needs to try pot luck, digging just below the surface of the sand as quickly as possible, hence their restless running and probing. The Spanish name is Lijadora, which very appropriately means “sanding machine”. These birds certainly are little machines, and well worth looking out for! You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

NOT WITHOUT MY VETS

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

Grooming Service Available

Pen Farthing, a British ex-soldier and creator of an animal shelter in Afghanistan, doesn’t want to leave the country without his team, which includes the first Afghan female Veterinary surgeons.

“What can you tell to somebody who is probably going to be forced to marry a Taliban mujahedeen, to be imprisoned at home for life just to cook and raise children from anybody who hates?” Farthing said to BBC.

One of the consequences of the critical situation in Afghanistan is thousands of people trying to escape due to Taliban menace. Everybody is trying to find the quickest way to escape, but there are also some exceptions: for example Pen Farthing, founder of Nowzad Animal Shelter, who has declined to leave the country if his team, which includes several male and female Vets, is not rescued with him.

Farthing claimed Boris Johnson’s Government via Facebook from Afghanistan to help them, and the matter was treated as an emergency at British Parliament, where member of Parliament Sara Britcliffe introduced the matter of Farthing and his team repatriation, and Prime Minister declared he would try to help Farthing as much as he could.

Farthing applied British Government to rescue the 25 members of Nowzad team, in which practice learned the profession the first Afghan female Vets. This is the main reason of Farthing perseverance.

Some British Vets have created VetPartners, a group of Veterinary surgeons, and they have offered a job to all members of Nowzad team immediately they arrive to the UK. VetPartners have started via 160 of its members, a fundraising in order to help Farthing and his male and female Veterinary partners. (Taken from portalveterinaria.com)
