Q: MASA SQUARE – WHAT A MESS Dear Lou & Ged I am puzzled as to why people go to Masa Square. It is surely for the good bars and the excellent food, as it is certainly not for the salubrious surroundings. Broken and missing tiles on the pavements and on nearly every step the bull-nose has been snapped off. Balustrades looking like they are ready to fall over. Surely, this place is an accident waiting to happen. I always thought that the owners and the Council had a duty of care, that as this was a public area and they would look after our safety but for the last ten or more years it has just went Thanksdownhill.Mike

GA Advertiser Reply: We have received many emails recently about the state of Masa Square. We have made enquiries and Steve from Patagonia Steak House has kindly provided the following information. All of the commercial units in MASA Square, including Dialprix and Bernar’s Place (public pool and bowls) form a Comunidad de Propietarios. Over the past 10+ years, there have been issues with no administrator, which meant no collection of community fees. Over the last year, we have a new administrator who has been more efficient at collecting community fees and outstanding debts. Now that this is being managed more effectively, we have money and are beginning to repair the many areas that need attention. We have recently repaired the wall/ balustrades going up Calle Holanda. From September, we will be looking to fix the stairs from Dialprix car park, the broken tiles and the lampposts that do not work. Our hope is that with the continued correct management of the community and collection of fees, there will be major improvements over the next 12 months.

Q: MOBILE PHONE MAST Hi Lou Can you please confirm if the new mobile phone mast next to the Sports Centre is working? We live in this area, we can see the antenna from our home but we still cannot get a signal. Regards John Cllr Oscar Valenzuela's Reply: The mast is not operational at present. The telephone operator has to carry out work to establish connectivity, which requires that part of Ave Escandinavia to be cut off. By municipal ordinance, carrying out these works during July and August is not possible. It has been confirmed work will take place in September.

Hi Lou & Ged I read the Home Turf article in last month’s GA Advertiser with great interest. I was particularly interested in the community allotment. I was one of the first selected to have an allotment here in Gran Alacant many years Aago.lot of time, effort and expense went into creating our sustainable allotment. It was a nice little community of Spanish and English working in harmony together. The agreement was that after 4 years other people would get the opportunity to take the allotments over. Unfortunately, no one ever did. The weeds grew then the council came and ripped everything off the allotments including irrigation systems that people had put in. The place, which had cost people so much money, was now left abandoned. I can only speak for myself but I would have kept mine on had I been Iallowed.thinkthis is a shame that this happened.

PARAGLIDING Santa Pola is considering banning paragliding in the Cape and installing a calisthenics park in the area where clubs have historically carried out this activity. Santa Pola is a place with 10,000 paragliding jumps a year, which makes it one of the most popular scenarios at the national level.

After almost 30 years of conflict and neighbourhood complaints between the residents of Gran Alacant and the paragliding clubs, Santa Pola City Council has announced that "it is determined to put an end to the situation". Over the past 3 years, the City Council has tried to reach an agreement with the Paragliding Association to regulate jumps, ensure civil liability insurance and introduce portable toilets to the take-off and landing

"Safe and regulated sport, that offers all the guarantees to those who practice it and to the residents of the area," Baeza continued.

“Ill health primarily. I had cancer, a kidney removed, a heart attack, a brain virus which had me hospitalised for 6 weeks and bell’s palsy down the left side of my face.”

“I believe stress contributed a lot to this. I decided to retire before it was too late. When I left the army in 1991 I opened up a funeral directors in Manchester. My company was one of the first to offer low cost funerals at a fraction of the price of our competitors.” In the space of 6 years, Paul’s business grew to 14 branches and he was working 24/7. By the time Paul arrived in GA he couldn’t even walk 200 yards. He had sold his share of the business to his business partner and decided to live in Spain and focus on his health. DID YOU ENJOY WORKING AS A FUNERAL DIRECTOR? Yes, I loved it. I met so many nice people and enjoyed helping them through the most difficult times of their lives. I made new friends every day.

“I served from 1976-1991, 15 years. I started as a Gunner and worked my way through the ranks to Captain then acting Major. I was open to any training that was available and my biggest motivation was my family. I served through a number of wars and conflicts.

WHAT DID YOU ENJOY ABOUT BEING IN THE ARMY? I liked the teamwork. Even in the most difficult of circumstances we were all locked together and were there for one another. Hi, my name is Lynne and I have been lucky to call Gran Alacant home for the last 6 years. People fascinate me and I love to hear about their adventures and life stories. Over the next few months, I will be sharing some interviews with GA’s very own Superstars!

Paul is now helping other PTSD sufferers. He attended a British Legion Welfare Counselling course which gives people the skills to help others.

“Our family had been visiting Alicante City every Easter for 8 years. One year we couldn’t book our usual apartment in the City so we rented a house in GA and fell in love with the place.”

The Lowedown

“A lot of army servicemen suffered from PTSD, myself included. I went to see a clinical psychologist every week for a year. It took me 5 years to seek proper treatment.

“We recently celebrated our 45 year wedding anniversary. Joan has been a good influence on me. I was a bit of a bad lad at school and left with no qualifications. I joined the army then met Joan in Manchester. It spurred me on to get a grip of my life. I took every education course and opportunity available to me in the army. We have 4 children Dominic, Damian, Paul and Michelle and 6 grandchildren. I worked as hard as I could for my family, they were definitely my biggest motivation.”

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION “We have regular monthly meetings in The Pub on the 1st Monday of the month at 2pm. Anyone is welcome to join us, even members who have never served in the army. Our group is inclusive. We host regular fund raising events, awareness raising events and social gatherings.

We are always looking for willing volunteers to help us with roles such as Welfare Workers, Counsellors, District Poppy Appeal assistance. It’s a great way to keep busy and help others.”

“When I left the army I joined the local branch in Manchester so I have been a member since 1991. Whilst on holiday here in GA I was walking past Skippers one day where they were having a branch meeting so I joined that branch also.”

I also loved the training and educational opportunities. I got my GCSE’s in the army. I was a mature student at Salford University doing a Degree in Politics and Modern History. It allowed me to be at home and work as an instructor in the officer training core where students learn about the different roles in the army … and I got paid to do it!

The Alicante region is a hive of activity yearround with seasonal festivals celebrating food, drink, history and local traditions. The summer, coinciding with a traditionally less demanding period in the fields, is packed with diverse fiestas and celebrations which allow one to hop from village to village in a big summer-long party. All of these festivals had to be put on hold due to the global health emergency. However, as a consequence, this year all the local fiestas feel more special, absence truly has made the heart fonder! We have had the chance to visit a few of those renewed festivals and fiestas during the last few months; the Easter celebrations, June’s Hogueras in Alicante and recently the fireworks (Nit de l’Alba) in Elche. Each town celebrates in its own way but the expressions of community feeling, local pride and simple joy during each of these events has been beautiful to see and be part Howeverof. the summer is far from over and there is still time to share in one of our region’s most charismatic and colourful festivals: The town of Villena, Juan’s hometown, celebrates its annual festival of ‘Moros y Cristianos’ for the first time since 2019 from the 4th to the 9th of September this year. Our Alicante region is known for its reenactments of the medieval battles between the Muslims and Christians who for 500 years fought for control of the Iberian peninsula. The majority of these “medieval” festivals, particularly along the coast, are relatively recent inventions. However, in the valleys of the “Comtat, Alcoià and Alto Vinalopo” these reenactments and festivals

have been taking place for many years. The official records of them date back more than 200 years but their origins are without doubt much older and they possibly grew out of actual celebrations by Christians at the time of the first “reconquests” of towns and villages. The festivals of Moros y Cristianos held in the cities of Villena and Alcoy are the most prestigious of all of these historic reenactment festivals. This is due to both the long history of their festivals and the sheer spectacle which they both offer. In Villena the festival is organised around historic associations that organise and march in the parades that are the centerpiece of the festival. There are 14 of these associations; 7 Christian themed and 7 representing Spain’s Muslim heritage. More than a third of the population of the town takes part in the parades. Each of the associations has an official costume, some inspired by old military uniforms worn by the Spanish army or even by classic Hollywood movies from the mid 20th century. There is also a tradition of

designing new one-off costumes often of a quite spectacular nature, all proudly made locally. These bespoke customs are then show-cased during the parades and become quite a talking point for the crowds, with each association trying to outdo its rival groups. Such is the reputation of Villena for its costumes that people from other parts of Spain attend to check what’s new and to hire these unique costumes for their own local celebrations. It’s a bit like ‘Fashion Week’ for Moors & Christians and the costumes are truly works of art and one of the highlights of the event! With very strong local traditions of textiles, metalwork and shoe making, it’s perhaps not a coincidence that Villena and the surrounding area have developed an entire industry around custom made costumes for the historic Moors and Christian festivals that originated in this area of our province. We think that the best parade to enjoy this spectacle is the night of the 6th of September. ‘La Cabalgata’ which starts at 9pm and finishes…. well, depending on how you look at it either very late or very early! The colourful street lights make the costumes shine,10,000 local people marching, groups of dancers, floats, Spanish horses and thousands of musicians fill the streets with music, colour and joy. The festival is a great opportunity for the local community to gather and celebrate the city and its history. Visitors are very welcome and the city is keen to showcase the best they have to offer; their hospitality and know-how for food and locally produced products. Other than the big parades the week also includes non-stop events for all audiences and tastes. For those who love nightlife, there are live music events all over the city. We would particularly highlight the huge open-air clubs where you can dance all night, such as El Huerto de la Pona, La Troya and La Guarida, these clubs, which are run by the associations, are themselves spectacular, often being built in the form of arabian palace gardens or full size spanish Thegalleons!Villena festival of Moors and Christians traces its history back over 200 years, this year however will be special and we invite you to come and enjoy the return of one of Spain’s greatest fiestas! THE (CONTINUING) ADVENTURES OF THE GA RUNNERS

We regret that due to the chronic lack of facilities in Gran Alacant compared to the remainder of Santa Pola, we have been unable to book our August Indoor Sessions. at the Polideportivo Gran Alacant.

We hope to resume these sessions in September at Av. D’Escandinavia,78 beginning Wednesday 7th at 11am.

We will attempt to get a meeting with our local councilor and the Santa Pola Sports Department to see if we can get a more satisfactory booking arrangement.

GRAN ALACANT WALKING FOOTBALL

Not wanting to state the obvious, August was hot. In fact too hot to run, but some did venture out in the early morn, to try and avoid the hot sun. Eileen arrived from the UK and bravely ventured out on a run, as did Julie before she returned to Scotland. Both have now picked up their Gran Alacant Runners Shirts from Philippe at GA Homefinders. I went out a few early mornings, and on one occasion I saw Alison (not a member of our group) running further ahead, but she was going at a faster pace than me (well done Alison) so I decided it was too hot to try and catch her and slowed down. It was then I decided the best idea for me was to temporarily stop the running and wait until I returned to the UK to start again. Meanwhile Brigitte and Claudia, continued their running in Berlin, Staffan returned to Sweden where he should be 170 days into his run streak (that is 170 consecutive days of running, John continues to run nearly every day, Graeme is still putting in some impressive times, Mike and Richard competed in the monthly Handicap series in Durham where Mike sits in 2nd position after 5 races and Richard is in 5th. Geoff finally returned to the UK where he met up with Mike, John and Richard for a warm run around Durham City. If you see us join us for a run or say hello. Cost: usually €50 per round at peak times to include a buggy plus €1.50 mandatory insurance charge. It can sometimes be cheaper during less busy, off peak seasons.
