We at your Gran Alacant Advertiser continue to bring you all of the NEWS, including that from a representative from the Town Hall, as we have since May 2005.
If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please just email them to us at the magazine - granalacantadvertiser@hotmail.co.uk Q: Vectalia Hi Lou and Ged Thank you for your reply and indeed your help. I can well understand the complaints about Vectalia; when we first came to GA you could set your watch by the bus times, but now they are all over the place, and the drivers used to be so happy and helpful but now they are often grumpy and unhelpful. Our own experience recently was appalling - we had our daughter and toddler granddaughter with us and the driver refused to let us on because we had a pushchair with us. There was another pushchair on the bus already but it was empty and unfolded - we offered to fold ours but that didn't help - it was of course a busy bus but the driver let on a further 15 - 20 people who were after us in the queue and we were the only ones he refused to take.... as the buses are now hourly it meant we didn't make it to Santa Pola for the market that day.... not the end of the world but rather unreasonable we felt. If you do want to pass this on it was on Saturday 6th July - the 10.40 bus. But we firmly believe in trying to use public transport whenever possible so we will battle on next time we come out (September), but it's no wonder people prefer to have a car... and going back to the airport bus, I cynically wonder if Vectalia want to discontinue the service, by not promoting it (ie not having timetables available / displayed) they can cite a lack of use as justification?
Q: Rubbish Hello Lou & Ged, I am a resident on Calle Belgica in Gran Alacant and have been here for 15 years and this year I have been disappointed
by people behaviour especially those who have rented accommodation, I have come home from a day out and have found two bags of rubbish dumped on the side of the pavement, When taking the dumped bags to the waste bin they appeared to contain used baby nappies and also ladies sanitary products. They had been for some time as you could smell the odour from a distance and on touching the bags it allowed insects to disperse. I am disgusted by the fact that anyone fills this is acceptable especially in this heat and that are too lazy to walk to the waste bins. I am reaching out to you if it is possible for you to reach out to the rental agents to remind there customers to behave appropriately and respect us residents. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Kind Regards, Michelle
Anyway, it's not your problem; but thank you for doing what you can to make life easier and more fun for both permanent inhabitants and holidaymakers in GA Nicky x GA Advertiser Reply; We have forwarded your email to Vectalia and still awaiting their reply!!!

LARGE ITEMS COLLECTIONS on Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY. Please message this number T: 686 801 323 any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on. This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy. Just a warning that so far the police have been giving out warnings about leaving rubbish around the bins instead of placing it in the bins, but from now on if caught
750 EURO FINES WILL BE HANDED OUT! Hi following on from my last message we seem to now have people dumping bags where the bins used to be this bag is swarming with bugs. Also by the bins people don’t throw away!
Q: Pide Taxi Hi, I read in Julys book about the new taxi service and that you had not tried it yourself. Well I went to use it to book a taxi from G. A.to the airport and although it found my location alright it kept saying that no companies were operating in my area. Interested to know if anyone else has tried
to use it and had any look Thanks Michael Q: More Trees & Flowers: Dear Lou & Ged It was with great optimism that I read about our new Councillor, Oscar Pedro Valenzuela, taking up his new role. It is great to hear that Oscar lives in GA & even more encouraging that you reported that he is as passionate about the area as you guys are. It also gave me great heart to read what is already being implemented, e.g. the daily hosing down of the bins etc. With that in mind I am raising. again. The idea of planting more trees & flowers in GA We badly need more planting with all the concrete we are surrounded by, and even more being built. Especially in upper GA where there are practically no trees on the streets and no flowers what so ever There has to be a way for this to be implemented, plenty of other urbanisations

2 years, why on earth hasn’t it had a new coat of paint after all of this time? Makes the area look very tatty. ********** CARABASSI
Oscar Valenzuela’s Reply: Our intention is to make Gran Alacant more accessible and beautiful. But for now our main 3 priorities are: 1.Cleaning 2. Security 3.Transportation
BARRY’S BITS OF NEWS
It has been hot, blue skies and continual sunshine here on Gran Alacant in the past few weeks and has made the sea a very inviting place to be. Cars and masses of visitors everywhere. ********** 17 YEARS Last month Sandra and myself racked up our 17th year living here on Gran Alacant. Plus writing for this magazine for 14 years I begin to run out of ideas some months. If you have any news you would like to share with us at the magazine, the email address is on the front of this magazine and just send it to Barry. Thank you!!
A friend sent me a picture of the very early days of the carabassi complex. There were just a couple of downstairs businesses and nothing yet upstairs. ********** MATTRESSES More mattresses at the bins, why so many? Every year in the summer when house owners come out to their holiday homes we always have numerous mattresses left by the bins. ********** IMMIGRANTS About twenty immigrants on board a boat,
GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME!
This car crash managed to take out a post but missed the church! ********** THE WRITING IS ON THE WALL This writing has been on this wall for a least
arrived at the beach of Carabassí de Elche and its occupants have made a run for it police sources have confirmed. ********** THE TRAIN The Gran Alacant Tourist train as you have never seen it before.
********** MEDICAL CENTRE The refurbishment of the medical centre in Gran Alacant will be a reality in September

after the town has been wanting this investment for years. It will cost 90,000 euros. And moves are afoot to work their way around the disruption this will cause during the building work. ********** HOTEL For those of you not here all of the time, here is an updated picture of the progress
of the new hotel. Looking good! Brickwork going in and balconies being built. FOOTBALL ON GRAN ALACANT A big milestone for the Gran Alacant Oldies Walking Football Club who celebrated their 100ths session on 22ndAugust, played as usual at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre indoor arena. We started in August, two
years ago. As it’s indoors there is no need to play under the heat of the Spanish sun, or of course out of the rain, if we ever have any. We play almost every week of the year and only miss out when the sports centre is closed for holidays, so you have every chance of getting fit and even fitter. We can play when it rains, play when its hot, play play play. Do exactly as you want. Just enjoy. Sponsored shirts, red and yellow are supplied. Sponsors helped buy these shirts, very early days when we had no funds. We play for fun, lots and lots of fun. We
10
are not strict with rules but want no one getting injured, so we insist on no tackling, no contact, most are too old to want to be injured, so safety first. We don’t play too seriously, we play to enjoy. So, come and enjoy your time with us, always starting at noon for one hour every Thursday. We charge just 2 Euro per session. After the game, most of the players meet up at Bar Sioux for drinks, as with everything else with us its optional. Do what suits you. Plenty of seating room at the sports centre to come and watch to help you make up your mind about joining in. We will welcome you! ********** MONEY The Popular Party has asked that the previous Government Team need to explain to everybody why they knowingly hid an invoice in a drawer amounting to € 7.5 million Euros dated in May. After almost 3 months at the Town Hall, we have just found out, and Caixabank are claiming the immediate payment. This seriously effects the budget for the coming term. ********** LIFE RESORT A new opportunity to show your complaints about the residential Santara Life Resort of Gran Alacant. The Association of Users and Residents of the complex met with the new government team of Santa Pola to make their claims, since the complex did not offer the services it advertised when it was built. José González, representative of the association, explained that the meeting did not contribute anything new to the situation they are experiencing: “We have reiterated our complaints that the company did not offer the health care services we paid at the time and that, in addition, it acted like a hotel when they didn’t have the relevant license “. The association pressed for the City Council to do everything possible to resolve the situation. At the same time, the owners of the complex have presented to the town hall the documentation to obtain the municipal Tourism license and thus

Users were unhappy about the lack of action, which “has not done anything to solve the problem,” said José González. ********** SCOOTERS Is this the start of things to come. Unregistered, uninsured, no licence, no helmets. These are everywhere at the moment. On the roads, on the pavements. Below is part of an article from a local forum. People think that an electric scooter, is exempt from complying with any regulations, which is not true. As pointed out by the Local Police of Santa Pola, we are
talking about full-blown electric mopeds and must have their driving license, license plates, insurance, wear a helmet, pass the ITV and have the necessary driving license for that vehicle. If you want one of these vehicles go to Traffico and make it legal. If you do not have identification, you cannot ride on public roads. BIN NEWS There are now notices on the bins, see

The van comes to the bins on Tuesdays and Thursdays to pick up the larger items. Best not to put them out on Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday as they will lay there for a long time and make the area look very untidy. Just a warning that so far the police have been giving out warnings about leaving rubbish around the bins instead of placing it in the bins, but from now on if caught 750 euro fines will be handed out!
We also have new pink bins, picture attached, where you can leave items of clothing etc which can then be distributed to the poor and needy. ********** ALICANTE AIRPORT Our local airport, 10 mintes up the road, yet again, announce record figures, with 8.5 million passengers during the first seven months of the year. ********** THE EGRET A sad story from a friend of ours who came home to find an egret on her step. Arterial Hypertension is the elevation of blood pressure levels in the arteries. It is a disease that does not produce symptoms by itself, which is why it is called a silent disease.
the damage. Boosts the accumulation of fat in the arterial walls (atherosclerosis) and softening of the arterial walls, producing aneurysms and in the worst case, rupture of the arterial walls.
Hypertension is a cardiovascular risk factor: By having to strengthen the heart to overcome the greatest resistance of the arteries, it can occur hypertrophy of the left ventricular, (increased muscle mass on left ventricular), which can subsequently lead to coronary insufficiency and angina pectoris, and a greater tendency to produce cardiac arrhythmias.
In the brain they can cause cerebral infarctions in case of insufficient irrigation or cerebral haemorrhage in case of rupture of an artery.
In patients with previous cardiovascular problems, high blood pressure may increase

It can damage the kidney causing chronic renal failure, requiring in the most cases severe dialysis. It can also cause intermittent claudication, which is when the arteries cannot carry enough blood to the lower limbs and with

the movement produces pain that requires interruption of movement. It can cause damage to the arteries of the retina (eyes) causing vision impairment. It can cause impotence in men. The diagnosis is by means of measurements of high blood pressure figures, although there are different methods and sometimes requires tests such as the blood pressure Holter. The study of blood pressure should always be completed with blood and urine tests and electrocardiogram.
TREATMENT AND PREVENTION: THE BEST TREATMENT IS PREVENTION: HEALTHY LIFESTYLE •
DO NOT SMOKE BECAUSE TOBACCO INCREASES ARTERIAL VOLTAGE AND CARDIAC FREQUENCY.
•
THE EXCESSIVE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOL INCREASES ARTERIAL VOLTAGE AND PRODUCES DAMAGES IN THE HEART, BRAIN, EYES AND OTHER ORGANS.
•
OVERWEIGHT-OBESITY INCREASES PRESSURE AND CARDIOVASCULAR RISK AND SUFFERING DIABETES
•
•
THE REGULAR EXERCISE PRODUCES DECREASE OF ARTERIAL VOLTAGE AS IT INCREASES THE CAPACITY OF EFFORT, AND DECREASES CARDIOVASCULAR RISK HEALTHY DIET
If an arterial hypertension is already established, previous recommendations are not enough and the pharmacological treatment guided by your general practitioner may be necessary. The general practitioner will need to send for cardiology assessment and precise of evolutionary follow up.
PREVENTION is the most important factor to avoid complications associated with hypertension. Once diagnosed with hypertension, treatment and follow ups are very important with complementary tests and analysis that are considered necessary according to the characteristics of each patients.

"Do you understand that what matters is we win or lose as a team?" The boy nodded in yes. The coach continued, "I'm sure you know, when an out is called, you shouldn't argue, curse, attack the umpire, or call him a pecker-head, jerk-face or asshole. Do you understand all that?" Again, the boy nodded yes. "And when I take you out of the game so that another boy gets a chance to play, it's not good sportsmanship to call your coach a dumb ass or shithead is it?" "No, coach." "Good," said the coach, "Now go over there and explain all that to your Grandmother"!

THE MONTHLY BLUES Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)
There are ways to naturally aid the balance in your body: Generally cutting down your intake of burgers, sausages or meat-based meals will help as they usually contain high levels of saturated fat and salt.
This month is dedicated to the lady readers (sorry guys) but as the saying goes “happy wife = happy life!” Do you feel completely out of sorts once a month? Well lady, you are not alone! Don’t fret!
Don’t eat high-salt foods, such as crisps and salted peanuts or highly processed meats like salami or chorizo are best avoided, as salt will add to the water retention problem. Stimulants such as alcohol, tea and coffee, caffeine products like energy drinks, chocolate, cakes and biscuits are also best avoided as they mess with your blood sugar. Try starting your day with some porridge,
PMS causes a variety of physical and emotional symptoms in the days leading up to menstruation. Some can experience mood swings, food cravings or depression to breast tenderness, fluid retention or feeling bloated. Changes in hormone levels also cause some women to experience migraines. For one in ten women, the symptoms can be extreme. Pms is associated with unbalanced levels of progesterone and oestrogen. Low blood sugar is common prior to a period and once blood sugar is balanced symptoms tend to disappear.

adding some sunflower seeds, raisins or a chopped apple will help balance your blood until lunchtime, or try one of Joan’s gorgeous smoothies at LoungeD. Drink plenty of water and try calming herbal teas such as chamomile. Add some quality protein to each meal, like lentils, varied seeds, fresh fish, eggs or chicken and some dried beans and pulses which are rich in fibre protein and essential fats. Good hormone balancing foods to eat are sweet potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, and my personal favourite, brussels sprouts and try snacking on some sunflower seeds to slow the sugar release. If you have the extreme case, then start taking a B-complex or a women’s multivitamin in with your supplements and also take 1 gram of omega - 3 fish oil daily to help raise your mood.
Start some regular exercise to reduce stress or learn to meditate - just find some time each day to call your own. Treat yourself to an aromatherapy massage each month, some essential oils that can aid the balance are rose, ylang ylang, neroli, jasmine or geranium while clary sage is also great for reducing cramping period pains. Animals as Teachers By Jemma “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged in the way in which it treats its animals”. Gandhi
‘Listen to your heart ‘ ...
Hi, I’m Jemma.. I share what I continue to learn from animals through my work as a volunteer with them at www.satanimalrescue.com and at www.easyhorsecare.net Sometimes, when more dogs come to the kennels and no new homes have been found for a while, when yet more malnourished and abandoned horses or donkeys arrive at Easy horsecare, which is already overflowing, I arrive to walk the dogs or to poo pick in the fields, my own personal commitments in the UK drawing near, I find myself feeling overwhelmed with the enormity of the work to do and that how small a contribution I make, which I guess is how many of us feel given the vastness and varying problems and dilemmas we face personally and globally. At these times I am reminded of the touching story of a child who, when walking along a beach encountered thousands of dying starfish washed up by a storm. She/he started to pick up and gently take a starfish to the sea. “ You can never pick up all those starfish so why are you even trying “said his mother …”because for every one that I do, it has a chance to recover and live on... “ answered the child ………… As I go about my life and work new insights regularly filter in and I thought that I would broaden this monthly piece from time to time to include short anecdotes from others peoples experiences of wonder and connection with animals. So please do send me any you have via email: jems27@live.co.uk In a pub this month I noticed a dog with its head on a woman’s lap, its eyes meeting the eyes of the woman, both with such love that it literally brought tears to my own eyes, such that I was moved to go over and say hello. And how so often do we feel that we
46
would like to go over and make contact with someone, and don’t due to so many reasons like fear, embarrassment or shyness... My message this month is if you do feel moved by your heart GO AND MAKE THAT CONTACT… The woman’s name is Tasha and her dog is Misty, and she shared with me through some tears her story, how her dog has helped heal her and that at one time she couldn’t go out the house and only through her connection with Misty did she start being able to again….. I have also been drawn to Diane Cooper Archangel Animal cards this month, of which I will draw one for the month from time to time, so see if it resonates with you at all ... oracle cards can be a useful way to help connect to your inner self, to bring new insights to a situation, to help clarify a thought or feeling, to enjoy the images and what that can bring up, or to just give a new insight to consider and reflect on … And to leave with sharing that LoungeD, MASA Square have so kindly offered to host the upcoming Charity Eve for SATS on Thursday 3rd October, which will be a funfilled event with lots of local talent, so please come support us and if you have a hidden talent you can share with us please do … Until next month … Please get in touch with SAT or Easy Horse if you are interested in volunteering in any way. HIKING WITH HEIDI & OLLI THE PATHS LESS TRAVELED
Mutxamel River Seco trail Driving Time: 30 mins Walking Time: 1-2 hours Google maps directions: Área recreativa La Sabateta Mutxamel
My name is Heidi and I come from Helsinki, Finland. With my husband Olli-Pekka and our 3 dogs we live in Gran Alacant and enjoy the brilliant Mediterranean climate and possibility of discovering new hiking routes all over our Alicante province and sometimes even a bit further. Ironically, I have a fear of heights, but I love the views from tops of the mountains too much to stay away. Our dogs are getting older so all the hikes need to be suitable for them too as they always go on our adventures with us. I also love photography and always take load of pictures from our hikes. This month we go flat along river Seco from Mutxamel. Don’t go on this walk if it has rained a lot or it’s about to rain. We will literally walk in the river. This is best, and only possible, after a dry season. Or if you wanna see the dams and have a picnic and don’t even wanna walk further than that. The route starts at Área recreativa La
56
Sabateta Mutxamel with it’s nice picnic area with barbecue possibilities and good sized parking place with route information signs. The route is marked well with white/green stripes. White/green tells us that it is a local route. From this recreational area you can also choose a route going left to Lloma Ramos. We chose to head out right to Assut de Sant Joan which is an old dam. The start of the route is nice and easy. Old dams and bridges give a lot to look at. Mostly you are walking at the bottom of the river (so definitely do not take this route on a rainy day / period), so you’ll see a lot of green and might see some rabbits and birds. We saw a stork and lots of rabbits. Heard hundreds of birds singing along the humid areas. It felt a bit rain forestry. River Seco wasn’t as dry as the name indicates. And the path crosses the river – twice (depending how much water is running the day you visit)! At some point of the river it was very difficult to understand which side of the river you are supposed to

walk on. But you follow the river all along, so won’t lose the route in greater sense. At some point there was rocks you were supposed to use to go over the river. I chose to take off my shoes and just wade through. Water was very shallow. Just few centimetres. Bit muddy, and not too cold. I got a bit of a spa treatment at the same time. :-)

Lots of shade available and you At the end when nearing Assut de Sant can easily walk up from the river to the old Joan there might be too much water that town Elche area to see the sights. you are not able to get there. We managed to climb to the bridge and cross the road to Hope you enjoy this lovely hike, see the dam. We also continued the path See you next month, from the dam to El Cantalar for a kilometre Heidi & Olli or so. That part of the path was marked nicely. But the scenery didn’t bring anything new and some storm clouds were gathering in the sky, so we decided to head back. Always when going on hikes check that: Our total route was bit over 7km. • Your Mobile Phone is fully charged Another nice river walk is along river • Water - climbing up is hard job & you will need it Vinalopo in Elche. There we parked • Snacks (Remember to take all the garbage our car at Carrer de Benifaió which back down with you!) was easily found with Google Maps. • Have good shoes for walking There was lots of free parking space • Have small first aid kit with you right next to the river bank. • Have layered clothes. Up hill might be very windy and cold, even on a warm day. It’s an easy walk. There’s lots to see with the bridges, mills and old Coming down might be chilly, so extra dry aqueducts that the Romans have t-shirt to change into if needed is not a bad idea built, as well as the 1,2 km long • Always tell someone where you are going mural artist from all around the and when you’ll approx. be coming back world have created to the banks of

All four of them had been looking forward to the Mountain Walk. They had been on many walks together but this was the first time they would attempt one of the popular routes to the top of the Mountain. It was only just a Mountain at a fraction over 1000 meters, but it was the biggest one around. It had taken quite a bit of planning to get together on what appeared to be a good day for the “expedition”, as they had named it.
that the slightly deteriorating conditions were expected and there was still time to change the route to the slightly longer but quicker one which would enable them to complete the day they had been planning for so long. The discussion became heated and although they knew it was not the best idea, in the end they decided to split up with three of them returning to the car park and Tom continuing to the summit by himself, by the longer route.
There had been a great deal of discussion about the route to be chosen. Three of them preferred the most direct route but Tom was more wary. Although the weather forecast was favourable it wasn’t perfect. There was a slight possibility of cloud forming and as the temperature was going to be in single figures at the top, there was also a chance of rain. The most direct route was steep and he thought it would actually take longer and so leave them with a greater chance of encountering the rain, if it came. The others thought he was being too cautious and the group decision was to take the direct route. They left their details with the reporting hut at the car park and set off in the warm sunshine. They had not gone far along the track when the cloud started to form and the nice sunshine became a grey overcast. This was actually almost perfect walking conditions and they made good progress on the way up to their first checkpoint.
They rearranged the packs and equipment leaving Tom with the small tent which was always part of the team equipment, even on casual days out. They confirmed each other’s routes and parted company at the junction of the direct and longer routes. Tom made good progress to his revised, second check point but by this time the cloud began to descend to meet him as he climbed. He thought the best decision was to continue to the top along the well - marked track as the view below looked worse than the slightly brighter view through the thin cloud above. Then the track gradually petered out. His map reading skills were fairly respectable and he thought he was near the top but in the thick mist, with no reference points, he was lost. He knew there was a very steep edge somewhere and decided to pitch the tent and wait for the visibility to improve.
Being experienced walkers, they always set themselves checkpoints to make sure their progress was on track to safely complete their “expedition”. The route now became a little more challenging as the path began to rise more steeply and the surface became more slippery underfoot. Small streams were crossing the path as a result of previous rainfall and the temperature was now already into single figures. It was time for a break and a decision as to whether to continue or perhaps turn back. Tom was having none of it. He insisted
58
Tom had just settled inside the tent when he thought that he could hear a helicopter searching the mountain side but the noise was not quite right, it was a steady note rather that a thumping sound. Then the noise suddenly stopped. The low and indistinct sound of voices began to pierce the mist and he was sure he heard his name called. As the sun finally began to disperse the low cloud, the form of three figures appeared in the distance, moving in his direction. “Hi Tom, are we glad to see you. Come on, get your stuff together, we bought return tickets on the mountain tourist train and it leaves in ten minutes”.

Hi all, Hope you have all had a great summer. This month I decided to make a fish recipe. I love codfish and down the south of Spain they prepar one of the best codfish recipes called Bacalao a la Andaluza Hope you all enjoy it xxx
Bacalao a la Andaluza
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • •
4 DESALTED COD LOINS 8 PIQUILLO PEPPERS 8 OYSTER MUSHROOMS 6 MEDIUM TOMATOES 2 CLOVES OF GARLIC 1 ONION 50 GRAMS OF FLOUR WHITE WINE EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL THYME BAY LEAF OREGANO
Let’s Start! Prepare the sauce: peel and chop the onion into small pieces and put it in a saucepan with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil. Sauté in a pan and add chopped garlic. Remove the seeds and skins from the 8 piquillo peppers. Cut them into small strips, and add them to the stir-fry with a little salt, bay leaf and thyme. When all the ingredients are poached, add the 6 peeled and chopped tomatoes and 1 glass of white wine to give special touch to the sauce. Mix well and set aside. Prepare the cod loins: by passing them through a little flour mixed with oregano and frying them in a deep pan with plenty of oil. Add the cod to the tomato sauce and then add the 8 sliced oyster mushrooms. Let stand for a few minutes and serve. I used Boiled potatoes to serve with. Hope you enjoy xxx

Out & About with Star & Ashlee Mundo Mar Benidorm Hi my name is Star and I have been lucky enough to call Gran Alacant my home for over 11 years now. My 9 year old daughter Ashlee and I are often “Out & About” enjoying the local attractions and culture in this part of Spain. Over the next few months I will be sharing some of our experiences with you to encourage you to go “Out & About” yourselves and maybe learn a little bit about this beautiful place we call home.
different shows that you can enjoy, a Parrot show, a Sea Lion show and a Dolphin show. They are all on twice throughout the day and are in both Spanish and English.
During the heat wave in June we met up with some friends who were holidaying in Benidorm and decided to go to Mundo Mar which is an animal park that is located next to Aqualandia and takes about 45 minutes to an hour to drive to from Gran Alacant. When you first enter the park there are a number of animal enclosures where you can see Flamingos, Giant Tortoises, large birds, Armadillos, Meerkats and Penguins. It was great to be able to get up and close to these amazing creatures. Due to the terrain, the pathways through Mundo Mar are sloped but not too steep.
The Parrot show takes an unusual format as everyone sits at tables instead of in rows and it uses cinematography to help tell the story of

the different parrots from all over the world. It is a really good show as the parrots fly over the heads of the crowd and are constantly moving around which makes taking pictures hard, but is really great fun to be a part of.
There are some beautiful flower displays and statues dotted around and as you meander through the park you are often treated to a refreshing mist of water, which definitely helps to keep you cool. There are refreshment areas with vending machines, restaurants, picnic areas and a large play zone with zip lines, slides and secret walkways.
If you arrive to the Sea Lion or Dolphin shows early you are able to queue for the opportunity to have an official picture taken. They both have Animal experiences allow you to become a Dolphin and Sea Lion keeper for the day, swim with Sea Lions, have a whole day animal experience which includes swimming with Sea Lions or take part in a Dolphin experience.
some shaded seating and the Sea Lion show is in the form of a story involving Pirates, treasure and members of the audience. It is really fun but prepare to get wet if you sit in the marked “splash zones which are also at the Dolphin show. These beautiful mammals are fascinating to watch and in the show kids can sit in boats that the Dolphins pull along and jump over. It was really nice to see the bond between the Dolphins and their trainers.
The Sleeping with the Dolphins experience is for kids between 6 and 11 who enjoy an evening of activities before bedding down with these amazing mammals. In the morning they get to feed some of the park animals and attend the shows. There is also a Summer School from July to September. Although there are a lot of things that you can do at Mundo Mar, if you decide just to go around the park and see the shows, you can be finished by the early afternoon which gives you time to hit the beach, or pop next door to Aqualandia for some water park fun. If you do not have a car, you can use a special bus service that has pick up points and ticket sales around Gran Alacant. I strongly advise that you look at the prices available online or use the discount vouchers that you can find at the airport, petrol stations and shops. Generally these work out cheaper and you can still use the bus/coach service and just pay to go to Benidorm. This bus also stops at Aqualandia, Terra/Aqua Natura, Terra Mitica and Benidorm town. Until Next Time Star & Ashlee xxx

SANTA POLA WALKING FOOTBALL As part of the first ever walk football match for Gran Alacant against Lo Crispin (from Algorfa) at El Altet about four years ago I have had a yearning for the sport. It keeps you involved in football at a level you can manage with older bodies. To play on an outside astro turf pitch not only is fulfilling reminding you of the days gone by but does not put the same strain on your body as an inside sports centre basketball court. Hence the need for a regular venue at regular times with regular players. This is where Santa Pola C.F. (Santa Pola football club) comes into the equation. They are making their training facilities available to us every Monday at 9:30am starting 9th of September. That's venue and times arranged and now it is up to you to become regular players. We are not looking for professional level players but ordinary players who want a bit of competition, a bit of exercise and a lot of fun.
Why not come along and see what it is like....you never know... there is an England walking football team!!!

WHAT’S THAT IN THE CLOT? by Mark Etheridge
TRUMPETER FINCH possibly for livestock, and this attracted a party of up to ten Trumpeters, two of which can be seen in my photo.
Earlier this year, while I was at home in the UK, I was somewhat irritated and envious when my birding friend Greta (who lives in Gran Alacant) posted a photograph she had taken in the countryside near La Marina. It was on a Facebook group dedicated to bird sightings in our area, and showed a Trumpeter Finch, a bird I have consistently failed to see in over ten years of Spanish birding. Not only was it an excellent photo, but it was a bit like finding a wine gum in your paella – not impossible, but highly unlikely. La Marina is most definitely not the place to look for this bird; it is a bird of the dry rocky valleys in the mountains behind Alicante, and even then not easy to find. Over the early summer, I enlisted the assistance of local bird experts Bryan, John and Trevor, and together we set off on several expeditions to see if we could finally nail a sighting for ourselves. It had been reported in the past that a good site was the Montnegre Valley, which is traversed by a spectacular but somewhat hazardous road starting at Mutxamel and proceeding northwards. I have frequently travelled this road, which is excellent for birding but I had never seen the elusive Trumpeter Finch; however together we found an ideal site just off the main road where someone had made a small pool,
84 84
The bird in front is an adult male, with an overall pink wash and bright red bill, behind him is a juvenile bird with a typically sandy colour. There were at least five juniors in this group, so it seems highly likely that they had been born in the vicinity, as Trumpeter Finches tend to be fairly sedentary – with the obvious exception of Greta's bird which was some way off piste! Trumpeters are generally seed-eating birds, supplementing their diets during the breeding season with insects. Their range extends from the Canary Islands, across North Africa and the Middle East into Asia, the small resident Spanish population is mostly confined to the southeast of Spain, including our own area – the total Spanish population is about 1,000 pairs. It's not totally unknown back in the UK, but there have been fewer than 20 records, so this is yet another Spanish bird which will cause palpitations amongst visiting British birders! So why Trumpeter Finch (Camachuelo trompetero in Spanish)? Once you hear the song you'll be in no doubt – they sound exactly like the sort of cheap plastic trumpet that relatives buy for children in order to annoy their parents... You can see more photographs of birds from our area by visiting www.marketheridge.smugmug.com See you next month.

GRAN ALACANT GOLF SOCIETY As mentioned in previous articles the course at El Plantio was closed from 19 to 30 August and so the Society had a 2 week break as well. In the couple of weeks before the break the course was extremely quiet and golfers who joined us in that period enjoyed “millionaires golf” with no delays in front of us and no pressure from behind. When you read this article we shall be back golfing as normal, except that we shall be entering the high season. This will be reflected in the pricing charged by the course but, of course, playing with the Society golfers will recive a substantial discount to the “off the street” price. As always new members and/or guests are always welcome, whether a full time resident, someone with your own holiday home for regular visits throughout the year or a holiday maker in the region. We would love to see you.

HOMELESS AND PETS
What happens with dogs and cats which are living with homeless? Could that people face the costs and responsibility about them? As a matter of fact, there are some people who have lost their home and can’t be relocated in a social home or not even go to a hospital if necessary because they
don’t want to leave their pets in a shelter.
What about Spain? In some big cities such as Barcelona or Zaragoza, homeless with pets can get some help from FAADA#mejores amigos. FAADA means “Foundation for Advice and Action in the Defence of Animals”. This is an association which believes pets mustn’t be removed from their families. For making this possible, they have two options: • They can foster the pets for a while or • When possible, pet and owner are relocated in special social homes which admit dogs, or even in public hostels. In addition, they guarantee the animals are updated of every legal requirement
In London there are people who spend their time volunteering at the streets, and their task consists on taking care of the homeless’ pets. They are Vets, dog trainers, groomers, etc. The mission is not easy, not only because they must apply for lots of legal permissions, but also because the people must trust them, since some homeless may think they want to take their pets away from them. Obviously, these volunteers accept donations and every help is welcome. You can find some extra info at the website www.dogsonthestreets.org

(microchipping and vaccinations). In many cases, pets are the only companion and the best friends for these people, and it’s really important for both person and animal, to remain together. Actually, dogs and cats which live with the homeless, are never alone, and they know their friends prefer to live at the street with them than in a hotel without them.
